Deptford Celebrates Small Business Saturday

Saturday 2nd December was Small Business Saturday and the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry joined up with its affiliate, SELCC in Deptford. Acting CEO, Karim Fatehi MBE came down by train to meet SELCC’s President, Helen McIntosh, Vicky Foxcroft MP and Raymond Kinsella, Lewisham Council.

Saturday is market day in Deptford and the group toured the High Street with their tote bags given them by the market traders. The majority of businesses are run by locals with a strong tie to the area.

Bob the fishmonger has worked in Deptford High Street for over 46 years having started at 16 years old in his grandfather’s fish shop. Urban regeneration has happened in the area with the creation of a new public square, restoration of the Victorian carriage ramp and independent shops within the railway arches. Now called Deptford Market Yard, this was completed in 2016 by Landsec U+I and this development together with the refurbishment of the High Street funded by the GLA and Lewisham Council has helped link the ‘old’ Deptford to the ‘new’ Deptford.
