Hello
and welcome
to the latest edition of Inspire.

What stood out most was the shared commitment to collaboration.
As we look ahead to the next chapter of the Chamber, we are delighted to be able to introduce our new CEO, Daniel Martin, in this edition of Inspire.
Ahead of his official start later this month, he sat down for an interview to talk about his career, his thoughts on joining the Chamber and how it can best serve its members.
He is looking forward to attending events and meeting the diverse mix of companies that make up the business community in Hertfordshire. One of the first events will be the Inspiring Hertfordshire Awards at Tewinbury Farm Hotel in June – and we now know who the finalists will be. You can find the shortlist in this issue.
A recent highlight on our calendar was our Aviation and Defence Summit at West Herts College, where employers, educators and industry leaders came together to address the growing demand for skilled talent. With the sector evolving rapidly, the discussions reinforced the importance of collaboration, flexible training pathways and early engagement with future talent.
What stood out most was the shared commitment to collaboration. From leading organisations to our outstanding further and higher education providers, there is a clear recognition that partnership is essential to developing the workforce of the future.
I hope you enjoy this edition of Inspire as we continue working together to shape a confident, capable and forward-looking future for Hertfordshire’s business community.

Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce

The future of aviation and defence begins in Hertfordshire
As global demand for advanced aerospace capability continues to rise – driven by rapid technological innovation and investment in national security – the race for skilled talent across aviation and defence has never been more intense
Against this backdrop, Hertfordshire is increasingly positioning itself as a critical regional hub for the industries that underpin the UK’s engineering and defence capability.
These themes came into focus at the Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce’s Aviation and Defence Summit at West Herts College, where employers, educators and industry leaders gathered to address one of the sector’s most pressing challenges: securing a sustainable pipeline of skilled talent for the future.
A growing hub for aviation and defence capability
Hertfordshire is already home to a concentration of globally significant aerospace and defence organisations, including Airbus, MBDA and Leonardo.
These companies are central to the UK’s advanced engineering ecosystem, contributing to the design, development and maintenance of complex aviation and defence systems used internationally.
Alongside established industry leaders, the county benefits from a strong further and higher education network, including University of Hertfordshire, West Herts College, Oaklands College, Hertford Regional College and North Herts College. These institutions are increasingly aligned with employer needs, supporting training routes into engineering, manufacturing, digital technologies and advanced technical roles.
‘Words are seeds’
A keynote address was delivered by Dr Lionel Wallace DL of the Civil Aviation Authority, an experienced airworthiness engineer and former High Sheriff of Hertfordshire.
Drawing on his own non-linear career path into aviation, Lionel emphasised that there is no single route into the sector. He encouraged young people to consider a wide range of entry points, including apprenticeships, college-based routes and vocational training – not just university degrees.

He also highlighted the breadth of roles within aviation and defence, noting that the industry requires not only engineers and pilots, but also professionals in administration, compliance, project management and operations.
Lionel reflected on the importance of resilience and opportunity, encouraging attendees to consider how determination and access to guidance can shape successful careers in the sector.
His keynote centred on the theme “Words are Seeds”, concluding with the message: “Sow great ones.”
Skills gap remains a critical challenge
Discussions throughout the summit reinforced concerns around the ongoing skills gap in engineering and advanced manufacturing.
The Chamber’s latest Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP) report, developed in partnership with the Department for Education, identifies engineering, manufacturing and digital as critical priorities for Hertfordshire and the wider region. These skills are seen as essential across multiple sectors, reflecting increasing convergence between digital capability and technical expertise.

The LSIP work has also identified the importance of flexible training pathways, including on-the-job learning and shortform courses, to meet employer needs more rapidly.
Collaboration is key
A panel discussion highlighted the importance of sustained collaboration between employers and further education providers in developing a future-ready workforce.
Amanda Washbrook, Deputy Principal at West Herts College Group, outlined how the college works closely with employers to support recruitment and training through its aeronautical and engineering programmes.
She stressed the importance of early employer engagement in shaping student aspirations, particularly in sectors such as defence, engineering and advanced manufacturing.
She said: “Our experience is that young people are ambitious, but they need sight of real-world opportunities to turn their ambitions into something more concrete.
“Employers in these sectors are competing to recruit our very best learners with employers in other sectors, and businesses who work with their local further education college are better able than those who don’t, to ensure

they have a positive profile in order to attract young people to apply to work for them.”
She was joined on the panel by Dr Wallace, Airbus aerospace engineer John Chinner and Dominic Whyte-Ifill from the University of Hertfordshire.
Business leaders emphasise urgency of workforce development
Ellie Roe, Events Manager at the Chamber, said the aviation and defence sector is undergoing rapid change, requiring coordinated action to secure long-term skills supply.
She said: “Hertfordshire’s aviation and defence sector is evolving rapidly and employers must play a central role in shaping the skills pipeline for the future.
“It is vital that organisations engage in these conversations to ensure the workforce is equipped to meet the demands of this growing industry. Bringing together leaders from across the region strengthens partnerships and supports innovation, capability development and long-term economic growth.”
Showcasing pathways into the sector
Education providers including West Herts College, Oaklands College and North Hertfordshire College hosted exhibition stands at the summit, showcasing training pathways and career opportunities across aviation, engineering and advanced manufacturing.
Attendees praised the quality of discussion and networking opportunities, with Paul Lang, Co-Founder of

Patrons in attendance included Oaklands College, Pearldrop Video Production and the University of Hertfordshire.
Preparing the future generation for a changing world
In these unsettling times for global industry, aviation and defence continue to face mounting pressure, from skills shortages to rapidly evolving economic demands.
Yet, what emerged from the summit was a clear sense of direction: progress will depend on how effectively the region builds its future workforce today.
Through closer collaboration between employers and education providers, Hertfordshire is laying the foundations for a more resilient and responsive skills ecosystem.
As the sector continues to evolve, the focus is shifting from short-term recruitment challenges to long-term capability building, ensuring that the next generation is not only prepared for change, but equipped to lead it.

New chapter begins for Chamber
Daniel Martin steps into CEO role with a clear focus on value, visibility and helping businesses navigate a challenging economy
At a time when businesses are watching every pound and questioning every investment, the arrival of a new CEO at Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce comes with a clear expectation. Members want to know what this means for them. How will it help their business grow? And how will the Chamber respond to the economic pressures they are facing?
For Daniel Martin, those questions are not just understood, they are central to how he plans to lead.
His view is simple. If membership does not deliver real value, it does not work.
Facing the economic reality
He is clear about the challenges businesses are facing. “Across the UK, no one’s really got any money to play around with,” he says.
It is a straightforward observation, but an important one. From small businesses to larger organisations, the pressure is being felt everywhere. Costs are rising, margins are tightening and decisions are being scrutinised more closely than ever.
For the Chamber, this changes the conversation. Membership is no longer a ‘nice to have’. It must justify itself. It must contribute to growth, visibility or opportunity in a tangible way.
Daniel understands that expectation and sees it as a defining priority.
What this means for members
At the heart of Daniel’s approach is a shift in thinking about membership.
Rather than offering long lists of benefits, he wants to focus on what genuinely matters to businesses. What do they actually need? What will make a difference?
“I’m interested in the true value of a membership, not just what it offers, but what members actually want,” he explains.
That might mean stronger networking opportunities, better visibility or a clearer pathway to new business. It might also mean simplifying the offer so that it is easier to understand and easier to use.
The aim is not to overwhelm, but to deliver.
There is also an honesty in his approach. Daniel is not interested in selling something that is not right for a business.
“No one likes to be sold to,” he says. “If it works for both sides, great. If not, we shake hands and move on.”
It is a refreshing perspective and one that places trust and long-term relationships ahead of short-term gains.
A different kind of journey
Daniel’s route to the Chamber is not a conventional one. He began his career in a Soho post-production company, making tea for high-profile clients while learning the craft of editing. It was a hands-on introduction to working life, and one that shaped his outlook early on. Everyone, regardless of their role or reputation, deserved to be treated with respect.
From there, he moved into production and leadership, eventually running operations before setting up his own broadcast media business. Over 12 years, he worked with major global brands including the BBC, Disney and Discovery, building a reputation not just for delivering work, but for how he delivered it.
“It wasn’t glamorous,” he reflects, but what set his business apart was the way clients were looked after.
That focus on people has remained constant throughout his career.
More recently, his time at Barnet Football Club has added another dimension. Joining initially as a consultant, he became deeply involved in both the running of the club and its role within the community.
During the pandemic, that role became particularly important. Alongside other clubs and the Red Cross, Barnet helped establish food banks that supported hundreds of vulnerable families. The club also became one of the first in the UK to open its doors as an NHS vaccination centre, ultimately helping tens of thousands of people.
For Daniel, these experiences reinforced something fundamental. Organisations can, and should, play a meaningful role in the communities they serve.
Why the Chamber, why now
Daniel was not actively seeking a new position and the Chamber role appeared almost by chance, catching his attention online. But as he read more, it began to make sense.
“I wasn’t looking, but it just clicked,” he says, describing the moment he realised how closely the role aligned with his experience.
That sense of alignment is important. Daniel is not coming in with a desire to overhaul everything overnight. Instead, his focus is on understanding, listening and building on what already exists.
Strengthening the Chamber’s identity
One of Daniel’s early reflections is that not every business fully understands what the Chamber is or what it does. That lack of clarity is something he is keen to address.
Improving that understanding will be key. From refining the messaging to strengthening the website and overall brand presence, Daniel wants to make sure that businesses can quickly and clearly see the value.
“You wouldn’t open a shop and hide everything in the window,” he says, highlighting the need for clarity and accessibility.
For members, this matters. A stronger, more visible Chamber enhances the credibility of being part of it.
A focus on people and culture
While much of the focus is on members, Daniel is equally committed to building a strong internal team.
His first priority is to spend time with every member of staff, understanding their roles and ensuring they feel supported and empowered. “Without togetherness, you don’t have anything,” he says.
It is a philosophy shaped by his time in football, where teamwork is essential. He believes that if the internal culture is right, everything else becomes easier.
That includes how the Chamber supports its members.
Being visible and approachable
Daniel also wants to be a visible presence.
He plans to attend events, meet members and maintain an open-door policy, ensuring that businesses feel heard and supported.
“I’m very happy to meet anyone and everyone,” he says.
For members, that accessibility is important. It signals a leadership style that is engaged, responsive and grounded in real conversations.
Looking ahead
As Daniel prepares to take on the role of CEO, he does so with a clear sense of purpose.
The economic landscape is challenging and businesses are under pressure. But within that challenge lies an opportunity for the Chamber to demonstrate its value more clearly than ever before.
His approach is not about dramatic change. It is about focus. Listening to members, delivering what matters and ensuring that the Chamber plays a meaningful role in helping businesses succeed.
At its core, it comes back to a simple idea.
Put people first, deliver real value and build something that businesses genuinely want to be part of.
For Hertfordshire’s business community, that is a strong place to start.
His approach is not about dramatic change. It is about focus. Listening to members, delivering what matters and ensuring that the Chamber plays a meaningful role in helping businesses succeed.
Inspiration builds ahead of prestigious business awards
Hertfordshire’s most innovative and forward-thinking business leaders came together for an event celebrating past success and looking ahead to future achievements
The King’s Awards for Enterprise reception brought the county’s business community together to honour previous award winners and offer valuable insight into one of the UK’s most respected business accolades, the King’s Awards for Enterprise.
Hosted by the Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce on behalf of HM Lord-Lieutenant Robert Voss CBE CStJ, the event highlighted the importance of recognising and championing outstanding businesses across the region. In his address, Robert emphasised the vital role local enterprises play in driving innovation, growth and community impact.
A series of accomplished speakers shared practical advice and personal experiences of entering and winning the awards, giving attendees a rare opportunity to learn directly from those who have succeeded.
Among them was Dr John Howie DL, co-founder of YUMOVE, who reflected on his mix of King’s and Queen’s Award wins – in 2023 and 2018 for International Trade and in 2016 Innovation –and offered valuable guidance on crafting a strong application.
He was joined by:
• Peter Church, Managing Director of FB Chain – winners of 2025 International Trade
• Juney Mistiki, CEO and Co-Founder, and Mandy Webb, Marketing Manager, Bamboo Connect – winners of 2025 International Trade and 2018 International Trade
• Ruby Raut, CEO and Co-Founder of WUKA – winners of 2022 Sustainable Development
Each speaker shared their business journey, inspiring others in the room to consider putting themselves forward.
The event was held at the elegant Hatfield Park Riding School, which provided a fitting backdrop for an evening of forwardlooking ambition.
Caroline Maher, Conference and Events Manager, said:
“There was a real sense of pride in the room as we celebrated the achievements of past winners, alongside an exciting energy from those considering applying for the first time. Events like this not only showcase the incredible strength and diversity of businesses across the county, but also help to give people the confidence to put themselves forward.
“We’re proud to support and champion our local businesses, and we’re looking forward to welcoming everyone to our King’s Awards for Enterprise launch event, where we will share further guidance and practical advice.”

LEGAL MATTERS

Preparing employers for the new six months qualifying service threshold for unfair dismissal claims
Miranda Mulligan, Senior Employment Solicitor, outlines the implications to employers as a result of the reduction in the period of qualifying service for unfair dismissal protections from two years’ service.
Q What is the upcoming change to unfair dismissal rights?
A The Employment Rights Act 2025 which became law on 18 December 2025 amends the qualifying service required to bring most unfair dismissal claims. Employees will instead require six months’ service rather than the current requirement of two years. This does not affect automatic unfair dismissal claims which do not require service.
Q When does the change take effect?
AThe change is expected to come into force on 1 January 2027. This means that any employees who reach six months service on or after that date will be caught by the new rules.
Q Wasn’t this change proposed to take effect from day one of employment?
A
Yes, this was initially proposed as a day one change. However, in order pass the legislation the government was required to concede to a six month qualifying period instead.
Q What does this change mean for employers?
A
Employers need to be aware that as there is no longer effectively a two-year trial period for new starters or those who will attain six months’ service on or after 1 January 2027, a more robust approach to probationary periods is required.
Contracts for new starters should be reviewed to ensure that probationary periods do not exceed six months and in practice a shorter period of perhaps three months with a limited ability to extend for a short period would be helpful. Employers should also review notice periods to ensure termination occurs before six months’ service where relevant.
Q Are there any other changes to be aware of?
A
Yes, there are a number of changes which will come into effect over the next couple of years. For example, from January 2027, the statutory cap on compensatory awards for unfair dismissal claims will be removed. Awards are currently capped at the lower of £123,543 or 12 months’ salary. This significantly increases potential exposure for employers.
In October 2026, it is also anticipated that the time limit to bring most tribunal claims will be extended from three months (less one day) to six months (less one day) and subject to any extension as a result of ACAS early conciliation.
Q Have any other changes already been implemented?
A Yes, a number of day one rights commenced in April including making statutory sick pay payable from the first day of illness and a day one entitlement to paternity and parental leave. The new Fair Work Agency was also established which will oversee enforcement of matters such as minimum wage and holiday pay.

Employee Ownership Trusts

Employee Ownership Trusts (EOTs) have become an effective succession planning tool for business owners who want to preserve their company culture, reward employees and achieve a smoother exit strategy.
With recent changes to Capital Gains Tax (CGT) relief and ongoing benefits, now is an important time for businesses to understand how EOTs work and what advantages they offer.
What is an Employee Ownership Trust?
An Employee Ownership Trust is a special form of employee benefit trust that acquires and holds a controlling interest in a company on behalf of its employees. The structure was introduced to encourage broader employee ownership, preserve business continuity and provide a viable succession route for founders. Once established, the trust holds the majority shareholding permanently for the benefit of all employees, creating long term stability and alignment between employer and workforce.
EOTs Structure
A typical EOT structure includes:
• A newly formed trust that acquires more than 50% of the company’s shares.
• Trustees (often a combination of an independent trustee, an employee trustee and sometimes a founder representative trustee) who will protect the interests of the employees.
• The trading company continuing to operate as normal, with its profits commonly used to fund deferred consideration payments to the former owners.

It is important that the business has a separate management team that is distinct from the departing founder owners. This is because, following the sale to the EOT, the founder will typically reduce or fully exit their day to day involvement and the company must be able to continue trading on a stable and independent basis.
Lenders and trustees will expect to see that operational control sits with a capable management team that can run the business and generate sufficient profits to service any deferred consideration owed to the former owners. Without a clear separation between ownership and management, there is a risk that the business is overly reliant on the founder.
EOT ownership must meet strict requirements, including benefiting all employees on the same basic terms and ensuring the company remains controlled for the benefit of employees.
Tax Benefits (Capital Gains Tax) in 2026
Historically, the selling shareholders could benefit from 100% Capital Gains Tax (CGT) relief when selling their shares to an EOT. However, this relief has now been reduced to 50% for disposals completing on or after 26 November 2025. This means 50% of the gain is taxable upfront, with the remaining 50% exempt unless and until the EOT disposes of the shares. Even with recent changes, this is a more favourable position than alternative exit routes such as trade sales or private equity.
It is important to consider that the EOT will need to have sufficient funds to buy out existing shareholders. It is likely that that this will be paid over a period of time
and therefore appropriate security and ongoing involvement in the business may need to be considered.
Employee Benefits: £3,600 Tax Free Annual Bonus
Businesses controlled by an EOT can pay each eligible employee up to £3,600 per year tax free, provided certain conditions are met.
Benefits for Business Owners and Employees
Business owners benefit from a smoother exit allowing owners to step back gradually while ensuring the business remains in trusted hands. It promotes long term stability and even with the reduced CGT relief, the tax benefit can remain advantageous.
Employees feel connected to the business, thereby creating a culture of collaboration and shared success. Evidence shows that employee owned businesses tend to have higher productivity, lower staff turnover and better performance during economic downturns.
Want To Know More or Start the Transition?
Despite the reduction in CGT relief, EOTs remain one of the most attractive succession planning options for UK business owners. With significant tax benefits, enhanced employee engagement and a smooth transition path for founders, EOTs provide a powerful mechanism for securing a company’s future.
Our Corporate and Commercial team at Neves Solicitors would be happy to support you and guide you through the process at every stage.
Please note information correct as at April 2026.

£2 million appeal launched to enhance new children’s unit
A major fundraising appeal has been launched to help create a state-of-theart children’s unit at Lister Hospital, one designed not just for treatment, but for comfort, recovery and a sense of normality.

East and North Hertfordshire Hospitals’ Charity has unveiled the Children’s Big Build campaign, aiming to raise £2 million to enhance a new, purposebuilt facility for young patients.
The two-storey unit will include 20 inpatient beds, 14 consulting rooms and
dedicated clinical assessment and care areas. While £11 million has already been secured by East and North Hertfordshire Teaching NHS Trust, the charity’s appeal will fund vital enhancements to transform the building into a welcoming, child-friendly environment.
The vision goes beyond clinical excellence. Younger children will benefit from a dedicated play area, while older patients will have access to a recreation room designed to encourage social interaction and maintain a sense of everyday life during treatment.
Families will also be better supported, with comfortable lounge spaces and overnight accommodation so they can remain close to their children during what can be an incredibly difficult time.
Special consideration has been given to children with complex needs. Those undergoing cancer treatment or living with immunosuppression will have access to protected play spaces tailored to their safety and wellbeing. Outdoor areas will also provide opportunities for fresh air and gentle activity whenever possible.
Designed with the future in mind, the unit will incorporate the latest digital and interactive technology, ensuring it remains adaptable to evolving healthcare needs.
The charity is now calling on the wider business community to support the appeal, whether through donations, fundraising initiatives or participation in events. Businesses contributing or raising £1,000 or more will be recognised on a donor thank-you mural within the new unit.
Eloise Huddleston, Director of the charity, said: “This is a very exciting time for the trust and the charity. With the core funding secured, we have this great opportunity to make this something truly exceptional – something we can all be truly proud to be part of.
“We have an amazing, supportive local community who we know will want to get behind this campaign so we can make this unit the best it can be for poorly children.”

Resolving disputes through mediation
What are the advantages of mediation?
Is mediation compulsory?
Katarina Morgan
Partner & CEDR Accredited Mediator
Taylor Walton
“I’ll see you in Court” is probably one of the most well-known phrases people think of when it comes to disputes. Litigation and the court process is the most perceived method of resolving disputes when there are several alternatives to going before a judge, one of which is mediation.
What is mediation?
Mediation involves a neutral, qualified mediator who works with the parties facilitatively to help them reach a settlement. Mediations are confidential and held on a without prejudice basis, meaning that what is discussed in a mediation cannot be referred to in open correspondence or Court proceedings.
Mediations can be held over a half or full day, either in person or virtually. The parties have full control as to the process and outcome, whether a settlement is reached, and if so, what those terms looks like. If the mediation concludes without signed settlement terms, the parties are open to continue with the litigation, have without prejudice discussions or hold another mediation.
It is much faster to have a mediation than to litigate. Mediations take place as quickly as the parties can arrange one and it will usually last a day. Conversely, it takes on average 2 years for a litigated case to progress to trial.
Mediations are also much cheaper than litigation. The parties will split the mediator’s and venue fees equally (with each bearing their own legal fees, if applicable). Litigation costs are significantly higher.
Mediations put the control of the outcome in the parties’ hands. A mediation concludes either when the parties settle or agree to end the mediation day. The statistics support that the vast majority of mediations settle on the day or in the ensuing days. In comparison with litigation, the parties are at the behest of a judge on the trial day based on the case presented before them.
What types of cases typically go to mediation?
Pretty much any case can be mediated, and there are specialist mediators for different types of cases, e.g. family mediators. As a commercial mediator, typical cases tend to involve those where settlement discussions have reached an impasse or where one party will not engage in them at all. Occasionally, a mediator will be instructed directly by parties who are not legally represented.

Unless ordered by the Court, mediations are entirely voluntary. The Courts have always been encouraging of mediation (and alternative dispute resolution generally), however since 1 October 2024 the Civil Procedure Rules (the rules that govern litigation) were updated to allow the Court to order compulsory mediation. These changes took place following the case of Churchill v Merthyr Tydfil CBC [2023] EWCA Civ 1416 where it was decided that the Court can compel a party to undertake alternative dispute resolution.
A mediation can take place at any time in a dispute, be that before or after proceedings have been issued, even up to as close as the day before trial.
What are the steps to proceed with mediation?
The first step is for all parties to agree to proceed with a mediation, and if so, which mediator they would like to instruct. The parties will liaise with the mediator to arrange logistics such as the date and venue of the mediation.
Before the mediation, the mediator will have an initial phone/video call with each of the parties to discuss preliminaries about the mediation, including preparation of a mediation bundle. The mediator will also send a copy of their mediation agreement for the parties to sign confirming their agreement to mediate and to instruct the mediator.

Eight decades on, pioneering town continues to look ahead
Shaped by big ideas and practical ambition, Stevenage continues to redefine what a modern town can be
For a town with roots in Saxon England, 2026 marks a distinctive milestone for Stevenage: 80 years since it was designated the UK’s first ‘new town’.
As the UK’s first New Town designated under the New Towns Act 1946, Stevenage evolved into a modern urban centre prioritising pedestrian-friendly spaces, green living and strong communities. Its original purpose – to provide high-quality homes for London’s overspill population – laid the foundations for a town that continues to transform.
Eight decades on, that pioneering spirit remains at the heart of Stevenage, with ongoing programmes transforming infrastructure, public spaces and community life.
To mark its 80th anniversary, Stevenage is hosting a packed programme of events for residents and visitors alike. Among the highlights is Stevenage Day 2026 on June 14 (Hertfordshire’s largest free event) at the iconic King George V Playing Fields. With more than 30,000 people expected, the day features favourites such as Rock in the Park and the Pride stage.
Other key dates include Armed Forces Day on June 27 and Stevenage International Day on September 12, alongside regular family-friendly kids’ zones.
Stevenage’s achievements extend far beyond its new town origins. Known as ‘Space City’, the town plays a vital role in the global space sector.
At the Airbus site in Stevenage, around a quarter of the world’s large telecommunications satellites are built. The town also made headlines in 2016 when British astronaut Tim Peake remotely operated a prototype Mars rover here as part of the ExoMars programme.
Today, Stevenage is home to leading science, defence and technology organisations, including MBDA and GSK, where around 2,500 employees are working on the next generation of medicines. Plans are also progressing for a £900 million expansion of GSK’s local site.
The town’s thriving life sciences sector is further strengthened by the Stevenage BioScience Catalyst, which supports fastgrowing biotech and medical businesses with world-class facilities and collaboration opportunities.
As the world’s third largest cell and gene therapy cluster, Stevenage continues to attract innovation. Developments such as The Assembly are set to deliver new laboratory spaces, alongside amenities including restaurants, cafés, shops and a cinema. The first phase has already welcomed Autolus Therapeutics, which manufactures cutting-edge cancer therapies.

Alongside global leaders in science and technology, Stevenage is also home to a growing creative sector. Pearldrop, a Hertfordshire-based production agency specialising in video, animation and photography, has been delivering visual storytelling for brands, businesses and charities since 2003.
Working across corporate, social and digital platforms, Pearldrop takes a collaborative, end-to-end approach, from concept through to final delivery. Its Stevenage location offers excellent connectivity, access to skilled talent and close proximity to leading organisations, supporting continued innovation and growth.
This growth forms part of an ambitious town-wide regeneration programme designed to future-proof Stevenage.
Delivered in partnership with organisations including Mace, Reef Group, Muse and The Guinness Partnership, and supported by the Stevenage Development Board, the programme is creating new homes, jobs, retail spaces and cultural destinations.
Recent milestones include the relocation of Stevenage Indoor Market and the transformation of its former site into a town centre campus for North Hertfordshire College. Public art has also taken centre stage, with upgraded underpasses and the launch of the Stevenage Heart Trails.
Construction is also underway on a new, state-of-the-art sports and leisure centre, bringing swimming, fitness and sports facilities together under one roof for the first time.
Meanwhile, the Stevenage Station Gateway project is set to deliver at least 1,000 new homes, enhanced transport links and vibrant public spaces, further strengthening connections between the town centre and beyond.
Despite its urban growth, Stevenage remains rich in green space, with 11 main parks across the town. The largest, Fairlands Valley Park, spans 120 acres and features lakes, a splash park, outdoor activities and diverse wildlife habitats.
The town also offers 55 play areas – many recently upgraded following consultation with local young people – and leisure facilities such as Stevenage Golf and Conference Centre.
Culture continues to thrive at the Gordon Craig Theatre, a 501-seat venue hosting everything from musicals and comedy to one of the UK’s longest-running pantomimes.
Stevenage’s retail offer blends established favourites with new experiences. Areas such as Queensway, Westgate Shopping Centre and the long-standing Stevenage Indoor Market provide a diverse shopping landscape.
Now relocated to Boston House, the market has entered an exciting new chapter, bringing together independent traders, start-ups and global cuisine in a modern, welcoming setting. Events like Love Your Local Market highlight its growing role as a vibrant community hub.
Food lovers are equally well catered for, with a wide range of restaurants spanning both the new town and the characterful old town.
With excellent transport links to London and beyond, a thriving economy and a strong sense of community, Stevenage continues to build on its pioneering legacy. Eighty years after becoming the UK’s first new town, Stevenage is not just reflecting on its past – it is actively shaping its future.

Despite its urban growth, Stevenage remains rich in green space, with 11 main parks across the town. The largest, Fairlands Valley Park, spans 120 acres and features lakes, a splash park, outdoor activities and diverse wildlife habitats.

From market towns to movie sets
With its blend of historic areas, rolling countryside and versatile locations, North Hertfordshire offers a distinctive mix of heritage, commercial opportunity and cinematic charm
North Herts expertly combines historic market towns, thriving businesses and scenic countryside to create a dynamic and well-connected district. Home to Hitchin, Baldock, Royston and Letchworth Garden City, the area balances heritage with modern enterprise, making it an attractive location for businesses and residents.
Its strategic position between London and Cambridge underpins its appeal. Excellent transport links support commuting and commerce alike, with five railway stations offering direct services to London, Cambridge and Peterborough. Major roads including the A1(M), A10 and A505 provide easy regional access, while London Luton Airport sits on the district’s border and both Stansted and Heathrow are within an hour’s drive.
This connectivity has helped drive growth across North Herts’ towns, which have evolved into thriving commercial
hubs. Key sectors include construction, biotech and advanced engineering, alongside a strong base of independent businesses.
The district is home to several internationally recognised companies. Construction giant Willmott Dixon is headquartered in Letchworth Garden City, Samsung operates a major service centre in the town and Johnson Matthey in Royston is a global leader in environmental technologies and precious metals.
Alongside these major employers sits a growing SME community that contributes to a resilient and adaptable local economy. One notable example is Ogle Models and Prototypes, a long-established specialist in industrial modelmaking and rapid prototyping. From its 25,000 sq ft facility in Letchworth Garden City, Ogle combines advanced manufacturing technologies with decades of expertise
to support sectors including aerospace, automotive, defence and medical. Its location enables strong collaboration with clients and access to a skilled regional workforce.
Businesses across North Herts benefit from a wide range of commercial premises, including industrial and warehousing space, often at more competitive costs than nearby London and Cambridge. This is supported by strong education provision, access to skilled talent and close links to neighbouring economic centres such as Stevenage, Luton and Milton Keynes.
Looking ahead, the council’s emerging Local Plan will guide future growth, with new commercial and residential developments designed to meet demand and strengthen the district’s economic offer. This is complemented by a proactive economic development strategy focused on building a resilient, sustainable economy, alongside a dedicated action plan and the recruitment of a specialist team to deliver it.
Businesses also have access to a range of support services, including advice on growth, skills development, energy efficiency and recruitment. Organisations such as the Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership and the Hertfordshire Growth Hub provide fully funded guidance to help SMEs scale, innovate and overcome challenges.
Beyond its economic strengths, North Herts offers a rich quality of life. The district features a wide range of attractions, from cultural landmarks, such as North Herts Museum and Royston Cave, to outdoor destinations including Hitchin Lavender Farm, Knebworth House, Oughtonhead Common and the Greenway in Letchworth.
With great road and rail links, gorgeous leafy market towns and more than 40 picturesque villages and hamlets, North Herts’ commercial and residential appeal won’t be news to many. But the fact the region has quickly become the go-to filming location for many production companies might come as a surprise to some.
In fact, North Herts has quietly emerged as a soughtafter setting for film and television production, earning a reputation as a hidden gem for the screen industry.
More than 30 productions have been filmed in the area, including major titles such as The King’s Speech, Harry Potter and Batman Begins, alongside television series like Dr Foster and Tell Me Everything. This growing reputation reflects a wider trend across Hertfordshire, where the presence of major studios such as Elstree and Warner Bros. has helped anchor a thriving screen industry.
As production companies look beyond studio settings, North Herts offers a versatile and visually distinctive backdrop. The economic benefits are significant: filming activity generated an estimated £11.3 million across Hertfordshire last year, with further growth expected as demand increases.
With its strategic location, strong business base and high quality of life, North Herts continues to build momentum as both an economic hub and a creative destination. Whether attracting global companies, supporting innovative SMEs or hosting major film productions, the district offers a compelling combination of connectivity, capability and character, positioning it as a place ready for sustained growth and future opportunity.

What’s next on the horizon?
An ongoing, insight-driven networking series continues to bring Hertfordshire’s business community together.
The latest instalment of the Chamber’s Hertfordshire Horizons series welcomed key voices from local government, skills development, policy and industry, delivering timely updates for SMEs across the region.
Designed to encourage meaningful dialogue, the event created space for open discussion, giving attendees the opportunity to share their perspectives directly with regional stakeholders. This feedback will play an important role in shaping future events and influencing regional priorities.
The session focused on several key themes, including advocacy and strengthening the business voice, skills planning, the economic outlook and building business resilience. Sustainability also featured prominently, with insights provided by Herts Go Green and Grow, highlighting both opportunities and regulatory considerations for businesses navigating the green transition.
Opening the session, Chris Maloney, Partner at Menzies LLP, set the tone for the event as representative of the headline sponsor.
He was followed by Deborah Smith, the Chamber’s LSIP Project Lead for Hertfordshire, who provided an update on the plan. She emphasised the importance of employer-led, evidence-based skills planning in aligning training provision with current and future workforce needs and encouraged businesses to engage with the initiative to help shape skills development across the county.
Paul Robin, CEO of Hertfordshire Community Foundation, then outlined the organisation’s work supporting communities in need and highlighted funding opportunities available to local groups.
A joint update from David Hawes, CEO of Herts Go Green and Grow, and Abigayle Fisher, Director of InsightMCL, explored the growing importance of sustainability. They highlighted how collaborative initiatives are helping Hertfordshire businesses transition towards greener practices, while also responding to increasing regulatory expectations.
Scott Crudgington, Deputy Chief Executive and Executive Director of Resources at Hertfordshire County Council, provided an overview of proposed devolution changes, explaining how new Strategic Authorities could impact areas such as housing, transport and economic growth.

Closing the session, Anthony Downs, Managing Director at Placewell Advisory, reflected on a resilient but challenged economy, highlighting key trends including digital transformation and sustainability and calling for greater business collaboration across Hertfordshire.
Sponsored by Menzies LLP, the event took place at the iconic Knebworth House and Barns, providing a fitting backdrop for a forward-looking discussion on the future of Hertfordshire’s business landscape.
Ellie Roe, Events Manager at the Chamber, said: “This new series is all about keeping Hertfordshire’s business community connected to the conversations that matter, from regional trends to policy shifts shaping future growth. This session truly set the tone for a future-focused programme, bringing together insight, strategy and valuable connections.”
Patrons in attendance included: Oaklands College, Ashbourne Insurance Services Ltd, Hertfordshire Community Foundation, Longmores Solicitors, Menzies LLP, Pearldrop Video Production, University of Hertfordshire and Tate Recruitment.

Meaningful connections over coffee
An early morning start paved the way for engaging conversation, collaboration and meaningful connections at a recent networking breakfast.
The Chamber’s Silver Members’ Breakfast brought attendees together to meet fellow professionals, promote their businesses and make the most of valuable networking opportunities in a relaxed setting.
A highlight of the morning was an insightful talk from John Acton, Co-founder and CEO of peer2peer, a Patron and Benefit Partner. He shared how members can maximise the value of peer2peer, highlighting the high-impact support it provides to business leaders looking to tackle real challenges and unlock new opportunities.
In addition to the speaker session, attendees took part in an energetic ‘speed networking’ activity. With twominute introductions from each participant, the session created a dynamic and inclusive space for individuals to introduce themselves and share what they do. The format encouraged confidence, helping to break the ice and lay the foundation for deeper conversations.
Beyond the structured elements of the event, there was ample opportunity for informal networking over coffee, allowing conversations to continue organically. Members exchanged ideas, shared experiences and identified potential collaborations.
Claire Brewster, Membership Success Associate at the Chamber, said: “It’s always incredibly rewarding to see our members coming together in such a positive and collaborative environment. Events like this are about more than just networking, they’re about building genuine relationships, sharing knowledge and creating opportunities that can have a lasting impact on our members’ businesses. The energy in the room was fantastic and it really reflects

the strength and ambition of our business community. We’re proud to facilitate these connections and look forward to welcoming even more members at future events.”
Patrons in attendance included Ashbourne Insurance Services Ltd, Tate Recruitment, Menzies LLP and peer2peer.

Networking, but not as you know it
A fresh take on traditional networking created a relaxed, inclusive and genuinely engaging space for attendees to connect, collaborate and enjoy themselves.
Meet the Neighbours with Electric Umbrella was far from a typical business event. Blending live music with meaningful conversation, it offered an atmosphere that challenged perceptions of networking, replacing formality with authenticity and fostering a real sense of community and inclusion.
The event formed part of a wider engagement approach that included local radio promotion and coverage through Mix 92.6. In the lead-up to the event, Ellie Roe, Events Manager at the Chamber, spoke on the station’s Mix Mornings show to promote the event and encourage attendance across Hertfordshire.
They interviewed Electric Umbrella Co-Founder Tom Billington and member Jonathan and also played music from Electric Umbrella during the coverage. The station also spoke to other members of the Chamber team and attendees at the event, including Chamber Patrons Oaklands College.
Steve Simpson, Presenter at Mix 92.6 attended the event in person at The Marlowes Shopping Centre to capture the atmosphere and interviews on the day.
The collaboration also highlighted the wider opportunities available through the station, which offers businesses multiple ways to promote themselves and connect with local audiences through radio advertising, interviews and community engagement.
Sponsored by Dacorum Borough Council, the event also featured insightful talks from Tom and Diane Southam, Strategic Director – Place and Communities.
Ellie said: “Community is at the heart of what we do – connecting businesses with non-profits and local government. This event brought creativity to the forefront, using music and participation to spark genuine connections.
“It was all about positivity and wellbeing too, giving people the chance to have fun in an uplifting environment, while still making valuable professional connections. It was a truly inspiring event.”
Electric Umbrella, a Hertfordshire-based charity and Golden Buzzer act from Britain’s Got Talent, is known for using music to break down barriers and bring people together. Working with learning disabled people, the organisation helps build confidence, develop skills and create a strong sense of belonging through performance and collaboration.
Taking place in The Marlowes Shopping Centre, Hemel Hempstead, the event also featured an exhibition stand from Herts Growth Hub, while Mix 92.6 radio recorded from the venue, adding to the vibrant and energetic atmosphere throughout the day.

Why Good Management Information is Essential for Business Growth
Alison Price, Partner, TC Group

Across our region, there is no shortage of ambitious business owners. From professional services and construction firms to manufacturers, retailers and techenabled start-ups, many are working hard to build sustainable, profitable businesses.
Yet one of the most common issues we see, regardless of size or sector, is a lack of good, accurate and regular management information.
Too often, business owners are expected to make important decisions without having a clear, up-to-date picture of how their business is really performing.
Looking Beyond the Year End Accounts
For many businesses, financial information is still viewed primarily as a compliance exercise. Accounts are prepared once a year, tax returns are filed, and the figures are then put aside until the next cycle.
While statutory accounts have an important role, they are historical by nature. By the time they are prepared, they show what happened months ago, not what is happening now, and not what is likely to happen next.
In a fast-moving business environment, that gap can be costly.
What Is Management Information?
Management information (MI) is the regular reporting that helps business owners understand performance in real time. Typically produced monthly or quarterly, it provides insight into areas such as:
• Profitability and margins
• Cash flow and working capital
• Key trends and performance indicators
• Comparisons against budgets or prior periods
Good MI is accurate, timely and relevant. It focuses on the information that genuinely matters to that particular business, rather than generic reports that look impressive but offer little insight.
The Cost of Poor or Infrequent Information
Without reliable MI, decisions are often based on instinct, incomplete data or bank balances alone. This can result in:
• Pricing that does not reflect true costs
• Margins being eroded without being noticed
• Cash flow issues arising unexpectedly
• Growth decisions being delayed or made too late
Many business owners only discover these issues when the year end accounts are prepared, by which time there is little that can be done to influence the outcome.
Turning Insight into Better Decisions
Well-prepared management information changes the way business owners operate. It allows them to:
• Identify problems early and take corrective action
• Understand what drives profitability
• Plan ahead with greater confidence
• Make informed decisions about investment, recruitment and expansion
Just as importantly, it provides clarity and reassurance. Knowing where the business stands reduces uncertainty and allows owners to focus their energy more effectively.
One Size Does Not Fit All
There is no single ideal MI report that works for every business. A construction firm may need detailed job costing, a consultancy may focus on utilisation and fee recovery, and a retail business may prioritise stock and gross margins.
The most valuable MI is tailored to the business, its goals and its growth plans. Producing it requires more than software. It requires understanding.

The Evolving Role of the Accountant
The role of the accountant has evolved significantly. Increasingly, business owners are looking for advisers who can help them interpret the numbers, not just produce them.
At TC East, we work proactively with business owners across the region who want to grow and succeed. We view management information as a strategic tool, not a tick-box exercise.
Our focus is on:
• Clear, regular reporting
• Insightful commentary in plain English
• Ongoing conversations about performance and future plans
• Supporting better decision-making at every stage of growth
The aim is not more data. It is better understanding and better outcomes.
Knowledge Is a Competitive Advantage
In an increasingly competitive regional economy, businesses that understand their numbers are better placed to succeed. Accurate and timely management information provides the foundation for confident decision-making and sustainable growth.
For business owners who want to move from reactive to proactive, investing in the right MI, and the right advice, can make all the difference.

Accountancy firm with a Brighter Thinking approach
Chris Maloney, Partner of Menzies LLP, talks to Sarah Dale about the advantages of being a Chamber Patron, their commitment to charities, and how they use Brighter Thinking to offer a full service, tailored accountancy solution
A Brighter Thinking mindset is behind accountancy solutions firm Menzies LLP.
Founded in 1912, it now has 1,100 employees across 11 offices nationwide, including in Hertfordshire where its Stevenage office has a team of 40, including four partners.
Partner Chris Maloney, who is a Chartered Accountant and Tax Adviser with 30 years’ experience, joined Menzies on a merger in 2015 and moved to the Hertfordshire office three years ago. He explains their Brighter Thinking approach: “Brighter Thinking, to me, brings an added level of accountability, not only in how we support our clients, but in how we challenge and elevate the teams around us. It creates a healthy pressure to differentiate ourselves from competitors and, when combined with our values, strengthens what makes Menzies such a compelling proposition.
“As a relationship partner, my role is to spot ideas and opportunities. Brighter Thinking empowers me to expect our exceptional advisers and specialists to stretch themselves, think differently, and bring fresh insight to conversations. It encourages us to step outside our comfort zone, to be bold, ask better questions, lead by example and empower those developing behind us.
“Brighter Thinking keeps us connected to our clients, prompting regular, purposeful check-ins where we articulate our views with clarity, confidence and intent. Ultimately, it’s about delivering perspectives that clients truly value and that set us apart.
“We’re an accountancy firm which can complete all the necessary services a client requires, from well-off businesses to large companies. We have a full range of clients we look after. Brighter Thinking is about looking for opportunities for clients using entrepreneurial thinking. We don’t do run of the mill; we do bespoke, tailored solutions. I’ve always been very hardworking and energetic and make sure clients are serviced well. You can’t be a partner without that Brighter Thinking mindset.”
Offering a broad and evolving suite of services, Menzies supports businesses across diverse sectors in managing complexity, maintaining compliance and unlocking growth. Its expert teams provide tailored solutions across audit and accounts, bookkeeping and management reporting, taxation, restructuring and insolvency, forensic services, global mobility services and beyond.
“When I came to Hertfordshire, I was really keen to be involved with Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce as I had been a Chamber member at my previous office in Woking,” said Chris. “Hertfordshire is a thriving Chamber. There are many businesses covering a wide range of sectors, with lots of energy. We were very pleased with what we saw at our first visit. There are many benefits of being a Chamber Patron, for example, it’s great to be recognised as a Patron at events and receive regular shout outs. It really helps with our brand recognition as Menzies is a very strong brand in London and Surrey, but less so in Hertfordshire.”
His advice to new members is to consider your goals and what you want to achieve from the Chamber before signing up.
“Driving new business is not the only reason to be a member,” he added.
“This is a way to give back to the community, find out more about the business landscape in Hertfordshire, share business advice, and build long-term relationships with other businesses. It’s not a quick fix; it’s a long-term solution. Through the Chamber we have formed strong relationships with various banks and solicitors, and we learn more about what’s going on in the community.”
Supporting local charities is also very important to Chris, who is the Chair of the Menzies Foundation – the charity arm of the business. In the past few years, Menzies’ Hertfordshire office has supported several charities including Garden House Hospice, The OLLIE Foundation and their current charity of the year is Herts Young Homeless. Last year, they raised almost £5,000 for The OLLIE Foundation through a series of fundraising events including bake offs, casino evenings, charity runs, quizzes and a 1% Club themed night.
His proudest professional achievement is becoming a Partner at Menzies, the pinnacle of a successful career in accounting.
“From a personal point of view, I am married with a beautiful daughter,” he said.
“I play golf, padel, follow West Ham, really enjoy watching my daughter play netball, and I’m a lover of real ale. I’m also learning to sing and play the piano. I saw Elton John on stage at Glastonbury and loved the joy he brought to the crowd, which made me decide to start my own Elton adventure.
I don’t really switch off; I find it very difficult. However, learning something new like singing and playing the piano is really good for your mental health as you can’t think of anything else while you’re practising. One day, you might see me as an Elton John tribute act – who knows?”
Through the Chamber we have formed strong relationships with various banks and solicitors, and we learn more about what’s going on in the community.

Invest Hertfordshire is taking more than £5.6 billion of investor ready development opportunities to market at this year’s UK Real Estate, Investment and Infrastructure Forum (UKREiiF), positioning the county as one of the UK’s strongest pipelines for growth led regeneration.

Returning to Leeds from 19–21 May alongside representatives from the Hertfordshire Growth Board, the county’s inward investment service will showcase major town centre regeneration and innovation focused schemes as part of a wider programme to unlock investment, jobs and homes.
Three major sites in Watford have been put forward with a combined total value of £2.2 billion:

Additional opportunities include mixed use sites near Hatfield valued at over £545 million and Churchgate in Hitchin. Invest Hertfordshire is also bringing five emerging sites worth nearly £7 billion, including two new Garden Towns and major innovation led growth locations.
Over the three days, Hertfordshire Growth Board members will help shape the national growth conversation, showcasing how the county is pioneering healthy placemaking and accelerating investment in creative and digital industries.
Melanie Miller, Inward Investment Manager at Invest Hertfordshire, said: “Hertfordshire is a real engine for growth. At UKREiiF, we’re not just showcasing sites – we’re showing how collaborative leadership across the Growth Board and other partners is translating ambition into delivery and influencing national priorities.”

Why GEO matters for every brand
Search is changing. Laura Pearce, MD of Strand, explains
Another acronym. Just what the world needs. But this one matters, because it decides whether your brand appears in tomorrow’s conversations or disappears faster than the last slice of office birthday cake.
Most people think GEO is just Google’s shiny new AI search. And yes, that’s part of it. But really, it’s bigger than that. It’s Generative Experience Optimisation… that’s how your brand gets discovered (or ignored) when people turn to AI, voice assistants, TikTok or whatever comes next.
What GEO really means
Search isn’t a single Google box anymore. It’s Alexa telling you where to eat. It’s TikTok surfacing the best how-to. It’s ChatGPT writing a list of suppliers. And if you’re not on that list, you don’t exist.
AI doesn’t just skim your website. It stitches together answers from articles, reviews, LinkedIn posts, PR coverage, podcasts and even the odd customer comment on X. If your story isn’t clear, consistent and visible across all those strands, you’re invisible. That’s GEO. Not just search engine optimisation, but optimising your whole brand for discovery in an AI-shaped world. Why this matters now
The old SEO playbook of keywords, backlinks, metadata still matters. But it’s like showing up to the Olympics with just a pair of trainers. You need a whole team behind you.
AI doesn’t reward you for tricking the system. It rewards you for being useful, trustworthy and clear.
• If you’re quoted in the right places, you count.
• If your messaging is consistent, you stand out.
• If your content actually answers the question people are asking? You win.
If your brand story is muddled, AI can’t stitch it together. And if AI can’t stitch it together, neither can your audience.
How to optimise for GEO (without losing your mind)
1. Answer real questions. If your content reads like jargon, it won’t make the cut. Be the brand people (and bots) actually want to quote.
2. Be seen in the right places. Press coverage, LinkedIn thought leadership, case studies – it all feeds the machine.
3. Stay consistent. If PR says one thing and your website says another, you’ve just confused everyone… human and AI alike.
4. Think integration, not silos. SEO, PR, digital, creative, they don’t work in isolation anymore. GEO is about pulling all those strands together.
The point
GEO isn’t just about Google’s latest experiment. It’s about being discoverable, trustworthy and memorable across every generative experience.
The brands that win won’t be the loudest. They’ll be the clearest and the most consistent.

Initiative encourages young people to make waves
Young people in Hertfordshire will have the chance to get active on the water, as a sports centre has launched an initiative designed to break down barriers and provide free, regular access to paddlesports.
Lee Valley Paddlesports Club (LVPC) has introduced Making Waves as part of the venue’s 15th anniversary community open day. The launch event featured a range of activities, including white water rafting, public paddling and kayaking.
Open to children aged eight to 13 living within a five-mile radius, Making Waves provides a supportive environment where participants can build confidence, learn new skills and enjoy time outdoors.
Sessions will take place on the venue’s lake and along the nearby Lea Navigation, offering a varied introduction to paddlesports. Participants will work through the Paddle UK award scheme, developing their abilities on the water, with opportunities to progress into instructor training and even future employment at the club or venue.
The initiative forms part of wider work with partners including the Canal and River Trust and The Paddle Foundation to improve access to the Lea Navigation. The collaboration aims

to better connect the centre with local waterways, encouraging more people to enjoy the area’s free ‘blue spaces’ for recreation, wellbeing and community activity.
Delivered by the club, the programme is supported by Sport England and Lee Valley Regional Park Authority. Following
the launch, it will offer free weekly sessions every Saturday morning.
Jonathan Males, Chair of LVPC, said: “We’re delighted to support this fantastic initiative and help more local young people get out on the water. Creating opportunities like Making Waves is central to our mission at Lee Valley White Water Centre – making paddlesports accessible, inspiring and inclusive for the whole community. With the continued support of partners like Sport England, we can turn that ambition into reality.”
A London 2012 Olympic Games venue, the Lee Valley White Water Centre is owned by Lee Valley Regional Park Authority and operated by GLL, a charity and worker-owned business under the brand Better.
Through initiatives like Making Waves, Lee Valley White Water Centre continues to build on its Olympic legacy by widening access to high quality paddlesport opportunities for the local community.

A simpler way to recycle
Businesses across Hertfordshire and the South East are being urged to review their recycling processes to improve national recycling rates and reduce contamination.
The UK’s Simpler Recycling legislation, which came into force last year, requires organisations to separate recyclable materials more consistently. Micro-firms (with fewer than 10 full-time equivalent employees) have until 31 March 2027 to comply.
However, for many businesses, the changes bring added operational complexity, from bin infrastructure and collection schedules to ensuring staff understand and adhere to new requirements.
CS Recycling, a commercial recycling provider, is supporting businesses through this transition by helping them assess and adapt their recycling systems in line with the new legislation. By reviewing existing setups and implementing practical solutions, the company aims to make compliance as straightforward as possible.

Craig Curtis, Managing Director at CS Recycling, said: “Simpler Recycling is a positive step for the industry, but it does require businesses to rethink how they manage their waste. We’re working closely with our clients to make that transition as straightforward as possible –from reviewing current setups to implementing practical, compliant solutions that work day-to-day.”

According to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, England generates more than 190 million tonnes of waste annually, with government targets focused on increasing recycling rates and reducing landfill reliance. As a result, businesses are under growing pressure to ensure their processes are compliant and efficient.

Supporting organisations across Hertfordshire and the Home Counties, CS Recycling works with offices, warehouses, schools and manufacturing sites to design tailored recycling systems that align with both operational needs and regulatory requirements.
As businesses adjust to the new legislation, CS Recycling is encouraging organisations to review their current recycling arrangements to ensure they are fit for purpose in a changing regulatory landscape.

‘Partnership is central to leadership’ – Claire Dolan
Claire Dolan, Deputy Principal for Strategy and Business Development at Oaklands College, talks to Sarah Dale about her leadership style and vision for the future growth and further success of the college
Could you provide an overview of your role and organisation, its USP and the special qualities needed to do your role and lead a team?
As Deputy Principal for Strategy and Business Development at Oaklands College, I lead on shaping the college’s long-term strategy, vision, driving growth and building strong partnerships with employers and the wider community. Our ambition lies in combining exceptional quality education with strong industry links, ensuring students develop the skills employers genuinely need. Leading in this space requires strategic thinking, adaptability and the ability to bring people together around a shared purpose. Strong communication, resilience and a clear focus on student outcomes are essential.
Why and when did you join the Chamber?
Oaklands College joined the Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce as part of a deliberate shift to deepen our engagement with the business community and play a more active role in shaping the local skills and economic agenda. As a large employer, anchor institution and skills provider for the county, it was important for us to be visible in the same spaces as industry leaders, SMEs and civic partners, not just as an education provider, but as a strategic partner and contributor to growth.
How has the Chamber supported Oaklands College?
The Chamber provides a powerful convening platform, bringing together employers and training organisations in a way that allows genuine collaboration. For us, joining was about influence, insight and impact, understanding what employers really need, contributing to regional conversations about skills alongside the three other further education colleges in Hertfordshire, and ensuring that education remains aligned to the future economy.
What advice would you give to new Chamber members?
Be proactive and make the most of every opportunity. Attend events, build relationships and don’t hesitate to be brave to start conversations. The value of Chamber membership comes from engagement.
Those who invest time in networking and collaboration see the greatest return and it’s certainly something that has paid off for us in building new and strengthening existing relationships.
What are the biggest challenges affecting the college and the education sector?
The further education sector is navigating significant challenges, including funding pressures, evolving skills demands and the need to respond quickly to AI and technological change. At the same time, there is increasing expectation to support economic growth and social mobility. Balancing these priorities while maintaining highquality provision is a key challenge and we cannot do this unless we are working in partnership with organisations such as the Chamber, employers, civic partners and the communities we serve. What new developments are coming in 2026 and beyond?
We are focused on expanding our curriculum in key growth sectors, strengthening employer partnerships and investing in facilities that reflect modern industry environments through our estates masterplan. Our focus includes developing new programmes aligned with skills shortages, developing more higher and professional level training provision, enhancing apprenticeships and continuing to innovate in how we deliver education and training services. We are excited to launch an international offer in September 2026 which will be intrinsically linked to our internationally recognised sporting academies.
What is your vision for 2026 and beyond?
Our current vision is that by 2027, Oaklands will be a sustainable educational trailblazer – inspiring our learners and our community to achieve their potential in a changing world. That vision continues to guide everything we do. It reflects a strong commitment not just to educational excellence, but to responsibility, innovation and impact, ensuring that our students leave us prepared for work, for life and for the future economy.

I believe the best results come when people understand why something matters, not just what needs to be done.
Looking to 2026 and beyond, we are now developing our next strategic plan, building on this foundation. The focus is very much on deepening our role as a civic and economic partner, strengthening collaboration with employers and other education providers, local authorities and communities, expanding opportunity for learners from all backgrounds. and ensuring that inclusion, sustainability and wellbeing sit at the heart of growth.
How would you describe your leadership style?
I would describe my leadership style as purpose-driven, inclusive and collaborative, with a strong focus on impact. I believe good leadership is about setting clear direction, creating the right conditions for people to succeed and then trusting them to deliver.
I lead with empathy and high expectations in equal measure.
I’m deeply committed to inclusion and wellbeing, and I try to ensure that people feel heard, valued and supported, but I’m also clear about accountability and outcomes. I believe the best results come when people understand why something matters, not just what needs to be done.
Partnership is central to how I work. Whether with colleagues, students or external stakeholders, I focus on building strong relationships, shared ownership and long-term value.
I’m energised by complexity and change, and I enjoy bringing people together around a shared vision, turning ambition into practical, meaningful outcomes. Ultimately, my aim as a leader is to create opportunity for others, to open doors, remove barriers and help people realise potential they may not yet see in themselves.
What is the best piece of leadership advice you have received?
Focus on people first and be kind. When individuals feel supported, motivated and aligned with a shared vision and values, success follows.

Unlocking team potential: The impact of sleep on workplace success
By Claire Russell of Mental Health in Business
World Sleep Day has now passed, but its message is just as important for employers and teams. Poor sleep is still costing UK businesses an estimated £40 billion a year in lost productivity, with more than 200,000 working days lost annually due to sleep deprivation.

This year’s World Sleep Day theme, Sleep Well, Live Better, was a timely reminder of how deeply sleep underpins both physical and mental health at work. Most of us know we’re not sleeping enough, but we often fail to connect a few bad nights’ sleep with the tired, irritable, less-effective version of ourselves that shows up at work. As an employer or manager, those effects are not just personal issues – they directly affect your business.
The scale of the problem is hard to ignore. Research has shown that poor sleep significantly reduces concentration, decision-making ability, and overall performance at work.
Many employees report that tiredness affects their ability to focus and that they make poorer decisions when they’re sleep-deprived, with a sizeable proportion having taken time off due to fatigue. Meanwhile, only a minority of employees say they regularly sleep well, meaning a large part of the workforce is starting the day already running on empty.
Sleep deprivation doesn’t just make people a bit tired. Consistent lack of sleep impairs cognitive performance in ways that mirror alcohol intoxication, slowing reaction times and undermining judgment.
It also affects emotional regulation, making people more likely to feel overwhelmed, become reactive under pressure, and struggle to support their colleagues.
Sleep and mental health are closely linked: insomnia can significantly increase the risk of depression, and most people experiencing clinical depression report sleep difficulties. When sleep is poor, mental health can deteriorate quickly.
Crucially, this isn’t just about telling people to go to bed earlier. Work plays a major role. Many adults say work negatively affects their sleep, through stress, long hours, high workloads, and blurred boundaries between work and home.
When a team member is lying awake at 2am worrying about deadlines or expectations, that is often a reflection of workplace culture and practices.
The positive side of this is that employers have real power to help.
Small, meaningful shifts in culture and management approach can make a real difference. Normalising conversations about wellbeing, including sleep, allows people to say when they’re struggling instead of pushing through in silence.
Training managers to notice signs of fatigue and hold supportive conversations can transform outcomes for individuals and teams.
Reviewing workload and expectations, encouraging proper breaks, respecting non-working time, and modelling healthy boundaries all contribute to better rest and more sustainable performance.
Flexible working, where possible, can help people manage their energy more effectively, whether by adjusting start times to suit natural rhythms or allowing time to recover after intense periods of work.
The aim isn’t to create a “sleep initiative” in isolation, but to recognise that a sustainable workplace culture depends on people being able to rest – and that rest directly affects productivity, morale, and mental health.
Sleep Well, Live Better is more than a slogan. Sleep is a fundamental pillar of health, as important as nutrition and exercise, and workplaces either help protect it or undermine it.
Employers and managers cannot guarantee anyone a perfect night’s sleep, but they can create conditions where people are less likely to be kept awake by work stress and more likely to feel supported when they’re struggling. That is not only the right thing to do –it’s smart business.
Ready to build a healthier, more resilient team?
At Mental Health in Business, we help employers create workplaces where wellbeing is genuinely supported – not just in policies, but in everyday culture and management practice. Our training and support for managers are evidencebased, engaging, and designed around real business challenges.

Stronger high streets start with smarter support
High streets across Hertfordshire continue to operate in a fast-shifting environment shaped by evolving consumer expectations, rising operating costs and increasing demands for digital capability. For many small and medium-sized enterprises trading in these locations, maintaining competitiveness requires access to targeted, reliable support.

To strengthen access to relevant guidance, Hertfordshire Growth Hub is developing a dedicated High Street Business Support webpage. The platform will bring together practical resources, digital tools and links to events, ensuring that high street businesses can quickly locate information that aligns with their operational needs. This work is being delivered in close collaboration with partners who already support high street businesses, ensuring
the content reflects real-world challenges and the priorities shared directly by business owners.
A workshop in Buntingford, High Street Businesses: Get Found and Stay Compliant, illustrated the type of targeted, practical support being designed for businesses seeking to strengthen their visibility and operational compliance.
Digital capability remains a core challenge for many high street businesses. While demands continue to grow, time and capacity pressures make it difficult for many to identify and implement the right tools.
The Growth Hub connects business owners with trusted support to help them improve online visibility, adopt appropriate digital solutions and better integrate digital and in-person customer experience. Its role in coordinating countywide support also ensures that businesses can avoid duplication of effort and quickly access the most relevant advice.
Regulatory compliance is another key area where businesses frequently require clarity. To support this, the Growth Hub
works closely with Better Business for All in Hertfordshire, a partnership providing access to regulatory expertise from local authorities.
Delivered on behalf of Hertfordshire Futures, the Growth Hub plays a central role in ensuring that support is available, coordinated and aligned with wider economic priorities for the county.
As the county’s gateway to business support, the Growth Hub has helped thousands of businesses access practical guidance designed to improve resilience, productivity and readiness for future opportunities. Delivered through a consortium including Exemplas, the University of Hertfordshire and Hertfordshire Chamber, the service is built on strong local partnerships and a shared commitment to strengthening Hertfordshire’s business base.

Accountants raise over £4,800 for suicide prevention charity
A full-service independent accountancy firm has raised almost £5,000 for a suicide prevention and wellbeing charity.
The Menzies Hertfordshire office came together to support their chosen charity of the year, The OLLIE Foundation, with a series of events raising £4,836 throughout 2025.
Each event was met with fantastic support, with people generously giving their time and embracing the opportunity to get involved, as well as sharing their own stories if personally affected by suicide.
Jake Falconer, Business Tax Senior at Menzies, whose dad was one of the charity founders, said: “Suicide impacted our family, and if anything could be done to prevent the same for other families that seemed a worthwhile endeavour.
“Having seen the charity grow from its earliest days to having this local and national impact is beyond humbling and makes me very proud of my dad and all the people that have put their time and energy into this.”
Activities included a casino night, pizza, pool and Peroni evening, bake off, and a client and contacts quiz night.
Naomi Powell, The OLLIE Foundation’s Business Development Manager, said: “Their decision to support The OLLIE Foundation reflected a shared belief in the importance of making a meaningful difference and we were proud to stand together in that commitment to reduce the stigma of talking about suicide and empowering conversations to save lives.

“With their generosity and support, we are able to strengthen our resources, reach more people in need and create lasting, positive change within our schools and communities. Thank you for placing your trust in The OLLIE Foundation and for being such an important part of our journey.”

£600,000 investment brings padel to Watford fitness facilities
New padel courts are opening in Watford as part of a £600,000 development at a fitness centre that also includes the introduction of a new range of gym equipment.

PadelStars is bringing five state-of-the-art padel tennis courts to Woodside Playing Fields, on the former Owls Bowls Club site.
The new venue will include two open-air courts and three covered floodlit courts built to international standards, alongside a refurbished clubhouse with toilets, changing rooms and a café-bar for players and visitors.
Padel is the UK’s fastest-growing sport, combining elements of tennis and squash. Played on a smaller court with walls as part of the game, it is easy to learn, fun for all ages and typically played in doubles, making it a great way to stay active and social.
Alongside this, the gym at Woodside Leisure Centre is having a complete refresh with brand new Life Fitness equipment. Every area of the gym will be expanded and improved, giving members access to a wider range of training options.
The work is expected to be completed before the summer and a temporary gym has been installed to ensure members can continue accessing a range of equipment while the work takes place.
Iain Milton, Contract Manager at Everyone Active which manages Woodside’s Leisure Centre, operating as an agent for Watford Borough Council, said: “We’re delighted to see work getting underway on these exciting improvements at Woodside.
“The investment in the gym will provide members with a fantastic range of new and modern equipment, helping us support people of all ages and abilities to stay active. We’re proud to be part of a centre that continues to evolve and offer even more opportunities for the local community to enjoy sport and fitness.”
Further improvements have been made across Woodside Playing Fields:
• Repairs to sections of the perimeter path
• Relocating the bin near the water fountain
• Enhancing ground conditions beneath seating areas
• Installing a safety barrier at the bottom of the zig-zag path to help prevent cyclists and children from entering the road unexpectedly

a new drinking fountain by the footpath. These build on improvements delivered last year, including a fully accessible Changing Places facility and another water fountain, helping ensure the area continues to provide high-quality facilities for sport, recreation and community use.
The Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “It’s fantastic to see so many improvements taking place in Woodside. These projects will make a real difference for residents. We want people of all ages to be able to enjoy high-quality facilities that help them stay active, healthy and connected. These improvements will help ensure Woodside continues to be a great place for sport, recreation and community activity.”
Chartered surveyors market rare commercial opportunity
A prime warehouse unit in one of Milton Keynes’ most soughtafter commercial locations has been brought to the market by a leading firm of chartered surveyors.
BTG Eddisons (incorporating Kirkby Diamond) is offering a rare opportunity for occupiers seeking a high-quality space with immediate access to the M1 corridor.
Paul Quy, industrial and logistics partner and head of agency at BTG Eddisons in Milton Keynes, said: “Demand for high-quality industrial and logistics space across Milton Keynes remains exceptionally strong, particularly for well-located units with good motorway access, such as M1-MK.
“The Kingston area continues to attract a wide range of occupiers due to its accessibility and strong local amenity provision. This unit offers a flexible and well-specified solution that will appeal to both regional and national businesses seeking a strategic base in the South East.”
Eamon Kennedy, senior partner and head of industrial and logistics, said: “Opportunities of this nature in Milton Keynes are increasingly rare, particularly units of this size and quality in such an established location. The combination of strong connectivity, modern specification and immediate availability makes this a highly compelling proposition. We are very confident that interest will be strong and that the property will not remain on the market for long.”

Located at Chippenham Drive in Kingston, the modern warehouse M1-MK comprises a unit with offices on a secure site, dedicated parking and loading facilities. The unit is of steel frame construction with flat panel cladding to all elevations and benefits from additional office accommodation alongside the main warehouse space.
Nearby occupiers include John Lewis, GXO, AG Barr, H&M, Amazon, Mercedes, Volvo, VW. The Kingston Local District Centre also offers a Tesco Superstore along with a wide range of retail and leisure amenities, enhancing the location’s appeal to occupiers.
The toilet block at Woodside Athletic Stadium has also been refurbished this year, alongside

Navigating change while preserving legacy

These themes were brought into sharp focus at a Chamber event, delivered in partnership with Longmores Solicitors – Family Business: 10 Generations, 10 Lessons – which brought together business leaders to explore the realities of sustaining a family enterprise across generations.
Claire Austin, Managing Director of Austin’s Family Funeral Directors, shared the story behind her family’s business, tracing its journey through the generations, offering a rare and honest reflection on the challenges and responsibilities that come with such a long-standing legacy. Her thoughtful and candid perspective set the tone for a highly engaging and open discussion. Claire was joined by an expert panel from Longmores Solicitors, including:
• Miranda Mulligan, Senior Solicitor, Employment Law
• Michael Budd, Partner and Head of Company Commercial
• John Wiblin, Partner and Head of Dispute Resolution
• Alastair Liddiard, Partner and Head of Trust and Estate Administration
Together, they provided clear, practical guidance on governance, succession planning, dispute resolution, employment considerations and preparing a business for the future.
Held at Hanbury Manor Marriott Hotel and Country Club, the event brought together businesses from across the region for a morning of informed discussion and shared experience.
Simon Neatham, General Manager of the Chamber, said: “Family businesses face a unique set of opportunities and challenges, particularly when it comes to balancing tradition with the need to evolve. This event offered an invaluable opportunity to hear first-hand from a 10th-generation business leader, alongside expert legal insight, giving attendees practical tools and fresh perspectives that they can take back into their own organisations. We’re proud to continue our partnership with Longmores in delivering events that support and strengthen our business community.”

Ukraine lawyer receives national recognition in new career as mechanic
A former lawyer who fled the war in Ukraine with his wife and young daughter has been nationally recognised after starting a new career as a mechanic.
Oleh Kuzma enrolled at North Hertfordshire College on a Level 1 Diploma in Automotive Maintenance just four days after escaping his home country.
Despite facing numerous challenges, he was shortlisted in the Learner of the Year category at the Institute of the Motor Industry’s (IMI) Annual Awards 2026.
He had previously worked as a lawyer in Ukraine but, as his qualifications were non-transferable, he chose to retrain as a mechanic because of his interest in cars and engineering. He successfully overcame mental health and learning barriers throughout his course. During his interview, Oleh’s wife Anna acted as a translator to help him answer questions and find out more about his course. He has since completed additional English classes outside of his motor vehicle programme.
As an adult learner on a course traditionally for school leavers, Oleh was significantly older than his peers. Despite the language barrier and his own mental health struggles, Oleh has continually supported his classmates to develop their skills while he simultaneously improved his own practical abilities and his English.
He took time to sit with his classmates and listen to their needs and concerns, often telling staff: “I was 16 once, I know what they’re going through.” As a result, he has made many friends in his class and developed excellent bonds with peers and staff.

Oleh has successfully completed his course and, while he is currently unable to progress on to Level 2, due to visa restrictions, he has built his personal and professional networks and secured a job in a garage.
Oleh’s tutor Matt Arnold said: “Oleh is the most hard-working, motivated student I have ever taught. He is incredibly deserving of this recognition.”
The results were announced at the IMI Annual Dinner and Awards ceremony at the Intercontinental London Park Lane Hotel. Oleh attended the event with his wife, Matt, and head of construction and motor vehicle at North Hertfordshire College, Sam Sharpe.

Widely respected within the firm and across the profession, she steps into the position with a deep understanding of the business and a strong focus on its future success.

“I look forward to driving the firm forward and shaping its next chapter. Keith has
been a huge part of the success of HB and I am pleased that he will still be actively involved within the audit, accounts and the leadership team.”
Karen joined HB Accountants as a graduate and progressed through the ranks to Managing Director, a journey that reflects both her expertise and commitment.
She has been integral in maintaining exceptional client service standards, supporting long-term client growth and contributing to the firm’s regional and national recognition for its apprenticeship and training programmes.
She has also championed sustainability initiatives, helping to introduce workplace recycling schemes and embed more environmentally responsible practices into day-to-day operations.
Keith said: “Karen has been instrumental to the success of HB Accountants over many years. This transition reflects the contribution she has already made and positions the business well for the future.”

Herts food businesses encourage others to dish up healthier futures
Food businesses across Hertfordshire are being recognised for making healthier and more sustainable choices – and those already accredited are now encouraging others to follow their lead.
The Hertfordshire Responsible Food Award, created by Hertfordshire County Council, is a free scheme open to any local business serving food. It celebrates those taking steps to promote healthier eating and reduce their environmental impact.
With three levels – standard, silver and gold – the award is open to businesses with a Food Hygiene Rating of four or above that prepare and serve food.
Among those leading the way is Pizza Wow in Broxbourne, which earned a Standard Award and became the first takeaway in Hertfordshire to do so. The business achieved this by cutting salt in its pizza dough by 50 per cent, switching to a healthier cooking oil and expanding its range of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options.
Owner Danut Carjan said: “I highly recommend that businesses sign up to apply for this award and make changes to help the community to be healthier and make a better future.”
The Fielder Centre in Welwyn Hatfield has achieved a Gold Award, thanks to its commitment to offering a wide range of fresh, inclusive and sustainable menu options.
General Manager Simon Freeman said: “We are always looking for ways to improve the healthy options on our menu and work more sustainably. The support we received from the Food Award team during the process was hugely beneficial.”
In North Hertfordshire, Halsey’s Deli earned a Silver Award by making simple but effective changes to increase the variety of healthier and more inclusive menu choices.
Owner Kim MacLarty said: “The Food Award Team were very helpful in providing alternatives to some of our practices to improve on the work we had already done regarding sustainability and healthier eating options.
“I would highly recommend any catering business to go through the programme as a way of improving their ways of working.”
Accreditation brings a range of benefits, including funded food hygiene training, exclusive supplier discounts and free advertising and promotion. The scheme is supported by district and borough council economic development and environmental health teams.
Hertfordshire County Council’s Executive Member for Public Health and Community Safety, Ajanta Hilton, said: “This scheme is all about helping customers to make healthier food choices. It is great to see that Hertfordshire is in step with the Government’s 10-year health plan to help tackle the obesity epidemic, which encourages businesses to make the healthy food choice the easy choice for consumers.
“The Herts Responsible Food Award helps food businesses to adopt simple changes which can have a big impact, such as switching to healthier cooking oils, reducing sugar and salt content, and recycling food waste. I’d encourage all local cafes, restaurants, takeaways and other eateries to join the scheme to support local health and the environment.”
Businesses can apply for free for a Herts Responsible Food Award by visiting www.Hertfordshire.gov.uk/HRFA or by contacting the Food Award team at: HealthierCatering@Hertfordshire.gov.uk.

Homegrown talent shines in double promotion at Hertfordshire law firm
A Hertfordshire law firm is continuing to champion internal career development, with two senior promotions highlighting its long-standing commitment to nurturing homegrown talent.
Debenhams Ottaway has promoted Barry Griffin from Salaried Partner to Equity Partner, marking a significant milestone in a career that began at the firm more than a decade ago. The firm has also promoted Theo Knibb to Senior Associate, further strengthening its private client team.
Barry joined Debenhams Ottaway in 2013 as a Legal Assistant before qualifying as a Solicitor in 2016. Since then, he has built a strong reputation for his expertise in wills, tax planning and estate administration, advising families and business owners across Hertfordshire, London and the UK. His clients often include individuals with complex estates, including business and international assets. Theo’s promotion reflects a similar career path within the firm. He also joined as a Legal Assistant, later securing a training contract and qualifying as a

solicitor in 2019. He has since become a key member of the firm’s highly regarded private client team.
Together, Barry and Theo play an important role in one of Hertfordshire’s largest and most experienced wills, trusts and probate teams. The department is consistently recognised in leading legal directories and is widely praised by clients for its clear and supportive advice.
One client said of Barry: “I have worked with advisers and lawyers for close to 30 years. Barry Griffin is up there as one of the best to deal with: clear, helpful and delivered as promised within a reasonable fee. Can’t recommend him highly enough.”
Another client said of Theo: “Theo was kind, caring and very helpful. He explained everything clearly and made sure that he had all the information.”
The promotions reflect Debenhams Ottaway’s long-established internal career pathway, launched 16 years ago, which has supported more than 100 internal promotions. Today, around one third of the firm’s lawyers and partners, including its Managing Partner, began their careers as trainees.
Managing Partner Susan Glenholme said: “Seeing colleagues like Barry and Theo progress through the firm and achieve these milestones is something I’m incredibly proud of. Their success reflects our longstanding commitment to developing people from within and giving them every opportunity to grow.
“When talented individuals choose to build their careers with us, it strengthens our firm, supports our clients and reinforces our long-term trusted adviser relationships, helping clients with the legal side of both their personal and business lives.”

Simon Mercer
Co-owner
Pearldrop Ltd
What do you do?
I co-run Pearldrop with my partner Denise Austin. We are a video production company that helps organisations communicate through high-quality visual storytelling. We create marketing and product films, event coverage, interviews, animations and campaign content for businesses, charities and public sector organisations.
Who do you work with?
We work with a wide range of organisations including NHS Trusts, charities, universities and private companies. Many of our clients come back to us year after year, which is something we’re very proud of. Our role is to help organisations communicate clearly – whether that means explaining a service, sharing a powerful human story, or promoting a brand.
Why did you join the Chamber?
I first joined back in 2010, when I still thought business “just happened”. I had just started building the commercial side of the company and was fascinated by the idea of networking. At the time, websites were beginning to embrace video and I was keen to talk to as many businesses as possible about how powerful it could be for them. The Chamber seemed like the perfect place to meet people, learn how business actually worked, and start building relationships.
How has it helped your business network?
The Chamber has introduced us to many organisations we simply wouldn’t have met otherwise. Some of those introductions have become clients, others have turned into collaborations and partnerships. The events are particularly valuable – meeting people face-to-face helps build trust quickly. It’s also helped to make us one of the most recognisable faces in the Hertfordshire business world.
What advice would you give someone starting out?
Focus on doing excellent work and being dependable. Reputation spreads quickly in business, especially locally. If people know they can rely on you to deliver what you promised, on time and at a high standard, opportunities tend to follow. And deliver more than you promised wherever possible: a little extra can really delight a client.
What do you think is the biggest challenge affecting running and growing a business?
The pace of change. Technology, markets and customer expectations are evolving incredibly quickly. Businesses must keep adapting and learning if they want to stay relevant.
What support do you want from government?
Simplifying regulations would help smaller companies spend more time focusing on their work rather than paperwork. And, frankly, lowering National Insurance. The NI hike has crippled cashflow for many SMEs, shrinking discretional spending budgets.
How confident are you your business will grow in the next year?
Cautiously optimistic. Demand for strong visual communication continues to grow, and video remains one of the most effective ways for organisations to engage their audiences. We’re embracing AI video at the moment, which we see as a massive opportunity for growth in our sector.
