Hello and welcome to the latest edition of Inspire.

If the awards are any indication of what Hertfordshire’s business community has to offer, then I am joining at a truly exciting time.

welcome As I write my first welcome column as CEO, I can honestly say that I could not have asked for a better introduction to the county’s business community than the Inspiring Hertfordshire Awards.

This year’s event marked a significant milestone as we celebrated 15 ‘inspiring’ years. For me personally, it was a privilege to be part of such a landmark occasion so early in my journey with the Chamber. The evening perfectly demonstrated the strength of our community and the vital role that businesses of all sizes play in driving growth, creating opportunities and supporting the communities around them.

Congratulations to all of our finalists and winners, whose achievements deserve to be celebrated. The standard of entries was incredibly high, which goes to show the breadth of talent we have across the county.

What stood out most throughout the evening was not just the success of individual businesses, but the spirit of collaboration and optimism that was evident in every conversation. At a time when organisations continue to navigate uncertainty, it was inspiring to see so many people focused on innovation, growth and supporting one another.

As I begin my time with the Chamber, I look forward to meeting more of our members in the months to come. If the awards are any indication of what Hertfordshire’s business community has to offer, then I am joining at a truly exciting time.

Oscars of Hertfordshire return as business stars grace red carpet More than 320 business leaders came together on a notably hot summer evening for one of the county’s most anticipated celebrations, as the winners of the 2026 Inspiring Hertfordshire Awards were revealed at a glittering gala recognising the very best of Hertfordshire enterprise Now in their 15th year, the awards have become firmly established as the Oscars of Hertfordshire, bringing together entrepreneurs, innovators and community champions to celebrate achievement, resilience and impact across the county.

Following the ceremony, winners relived their standout moments on Monday morning, with interviews featuring winners and headline sponsor SA Law broadcast on Mix92.6FM, giving audiences the chance to revisit and celebrate their success once again.

Held at Tewinbury Farm Hotel in Welwyn, the black-andwhite themed evening saw 16 awards presented across 14 categories, along with two Special Recognition Awards.

The night featured a number of standout performers, with several organisations securing multiple wins across different categories.

Among them, QCS Staffing enjoyed a strong evening, taking home Business of the Year: Medium to Large, Excellence in International Trade and the Workplace Wellbeing Award. LBS Distribution Ltd also impressed judges, winning Business of the Year: Small to Medium, and Excellence in People Development. Meanwhile, WUKA Ltd marked a brilliant night with wins including Entrepreneur of the Year, Green Award and the Special Recognition award for Inspiring Business of the Year.

“Congratulations to our finalists and winners. To be recognised among such a strong field is a fantastic achievement and we were delighted to celebrate their success at what was a truly memorable evening.”

One of the most notable honours of the evening went to Oaklands College, which received the Outstanding Contribution to Business Special Recognition Award, adding to its Highly Commended position in the Property and Construction Project of the Year category.

“We received an outstanding number of entries across all categories, highlighting the incredible talent, dedication and ambition that exists right across Hertfordshire.

Guests enjoyed a drinks reception, three-course dinner, live entertainment and extensive networking opportunities, despite the unusually warm conditions, which added an unexpected summer energy to the evening.

Behind the celebration While the spotlight falls on the winners, the success of the Inspiring Hertfordshire Awards is made possible by the organisations that support and champion the event year after year.

Ahead of the 2026 awards ceremony, sponsors gathered at Tewinbury Farm for an evening of networking and shared anticipation as preparations continued for the big night.

The Inspiring Hertfordshire Awards Sponsors’ Reception welcomed 27 guests and provided an opportunity to thank the organisations whose support helps recognise and celebrate excellence across the county’s business community.

Hosted by the Chamber, the reception brought together headline, category and associate sponsors for informal networking over drinks and nibbles, before giving attendees the opportunity to introduce themselves and learn more about the organisations represented in the room.

Guests heard from Nikki Petken, Partner at SA Law LLP, headline sponsor of the IHA, who reflected on the importance of recognising achievement and celebrating the businesses and individuals helping to drive Hertfordshire forward.

The reception provided a valuable opportunity for sponsors to connect ahead of the main event, strengthening relationships and reinforcing the collaborative spirit that sits at the heart of the IHA. Caroline Maher, Conference and Events Manager, said: “The awards are only possible thanks to the support and commitment of our sponsors. Late payments put pressure on cashflow, make bills harder to pay and, in serious cases, can risk insolvency. It pays to know your options when customers do not pay on time.

If late payments are affecting cashflow, you are not alone. Government research suggests around four in five SMEs struggle with cashflow and more than one in three businesses are paid late. Yet only around one in four take formal action.

If the debt is disputed, a solicitor can issue a County Court Money Claim and present the supporting evidence. If the debt is not disputed but remains unpaid, a County Court Judgment may be appropriate and can encourage payment.

If judgment is unpaid, enforcement may follow, such as using enforcement agents or placing a Charging Order over property.

Clear payment terms also help. If payment is due within 30 days, there is less room to object when you chase after that period.

Good credit control matters too: send invoices promptly, make the amount and due date clear, and follow up as soon as they are overdue.

Start by chasing overdue invoices promptly.

Often, a clear reminder is enough: more than one in three late payers blame administrative errors.

If that does not work, involve solicitors.

A letter from a solicitor’s firm shows the matter is serious and can prompt payment.

Solicitors can reduce problems early by reviewing payment terms and credit control processes. They can also advise on overdue payments, options, likely costs and whether action is proportionate.

A common step is a Letter Before Action, setting out the debt, payment deadline and consequences of non-payment.

Be clear about pricing from the start.

Late payers say almost one in three late payments arise from disputed invoices, so written prices help avoid arguments later.

Watch for regular late payers. Nearly one in five late payments are thought to be deliberate. If your customer treats you like a lender, you may want to charge interest. Or not do business with them in future.

Creditor Duties, Personal Liability & Misfeasance Trading: Key Lessons for Company Directors in Financial Distress MOHAMED ABDALLA Commercial Law Solicitor The legal landscape for directors of financially distressed companies has shifted in recent years. The Supreme Court’s ruling in BTI 2014 LLC v Sequana SA [2022] UKSC 25 reshaped how and when directors must consider creditor interests, confirming that a failure to do so can expose directors to personal liability.

The courts have also recognised the concept of misfeasance trading which is a claim that can arise earlier than wrongful trading and can lead to substantial compensation liabilities.

Understanding the Creditor Duty After Sequana The Supreme Court in Sequana confirmed that directors have a duty to consider the interests of creditors as part of their fiduciary duty under s.172 of the Companies Act 2006 not as a separate duty but as a modified form of the general duty owed to the company.

When is the Creditor Duty Triggered?

The duty does not arise simply because a company faces financial pressures. It is triggered when directors know or ought to know that the company is: insolvent, bordering on insolvency, or insolvent liquidation or administration is probable.

This is a stricter threshold than earlier case law had suggested, rejecting the idea that a mere “real but not remote” risk of insolvency is enough. Importantly, in Sequana, the directors were not liable because insolvency was not probable at the time the dividend was paid.

What Happens Once the Duty is Engaged?

As a company moves closer to insolvency, directors must balance shareholder and creditor interests. Once insolvency becomes inevitable, creditor interests become paramount. Shareholders cannot ratify decisions that breach this duty.

• Directors cannot delegate the creditor duty; all board members share responsibility.

Continuing to trade when insolvency is probable or prioritising shareholders over creditors, can expose directors to claims far exceeding traditional wrongful trading liabilities.

Directors must be aware that courts assess decisions with hindsight, often many years later, making clear documentation vital.

Misfeasance Trading: A New Avenue of Director Liability While Sequana defined when the creditor duty applies, the BHS Group Ltd [2024] EWHC 1417 (Ch) brought the concept of misfeasance trading into sharp focus.

This is now a key risk in distressed situations.

Practical Guidance for Directors To minimise personal exposure during financial distress, directors should: 1. Monitor Solvency Continuously. Regular cash flow and balance sheet analysis are essential.

2. Obtain Early Professional Advice. Legal and insolvency advice demonstrates responsible governance.

3. Maintain Clear Board Records.

Document the company’s financial position, discussions of creditor interests, projections and the reasoning behind key decisions.

4. Avoid High Risk Strategies. These are precisely the types of decisions courts have criticised in misfeasance cases.

5. Reassess Transactions Carefully.

Dividends, asset sales, refinancings and acquisitions require heightened scrutiny when insolvency is a possibility.

What is Misfeasance Trading?

Misfeasance trading arises where directors: • Breach their fiduciary duties (including the creditor duty), • Continue trading despite financial distress, and • Cause loss to the company or its creditors as a result.

The BHS case marked the first reported instance of directors being found liable for misfeasance trading in addition to wrongful trading.

Why it Matters More Than Wrongful Trading Unlike wrongful trading where liability requires proof that insolvent liquidation was unavoidable, misfeasance trading can arise earlier, simply because the creditor duty has been triggered.

The Supreme Court’s confirmation of the creditor duty in Sequana, coupled with the courts’ growing willingness to impose substantial personal liability through misfeasance trading, means directors must act with heightened awareness whenever their company faces financial challenges.

This means directors can face liability before the statutory wrongful trading threshold is crossed.

Key Features Identified by the Courts • Misfeasance trading may succeed even where wrongful trading does not.

• The financial consequences can be severe; for example, courts have awarded more than £150 million against directors in the trading misfeasance case of BHS Group Ltd [2024] EWHC 1417 (Ch) • Courts focus on “insolvency deepening” behaviour, such as refinancing on unfavourable terms or pursuing high risk strategies to “trade out of trouble”.

Big brands, bold ideas and County Show celebrations From global business journeys to shared community pride, an evening of connection set the tone ahead of one of Hertfordshire’s most anticipated annual events Guests gathered at the Hertfordshire County Showground for the May County Show Reception, hosted by the Chamber, bringing together business leaders for an evening of insight and celebration ahead of the Herts County Show weekend.

The keynote address was delivered by Richard Parker, Managing Director of Skechers UK and Ireland, who shared his journey of building a global brand. Reflecting on decades of growth and transformation, he spoke about the evolution of Skechers into a multi-billion-pound international brand, now operating in more than 180 countries and selling millions of shoes annually.

His talk explored the realities of business growth, from early start-up challenges and rapid expansion through to navigating retail disruption and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The presentation sparked a lively Q&A session and received excellent feedback from attendees. Richard also generously brought along limited-edition footwear and new designs from the brand, as well as gifting pairs to the Chamber team.

The reception was supported by headline sponsors Tees Law and the UK Ministry of Defence, alongside car sponsor Porsche, with each sharing reflections on their respective organisations.

Guests heard from Sarah Thompson (Defence Relationships Manager, East Anglia RFCA), Baljeet Kaur (Partner at Tees Law) and David Hoyte (Sales Executive at Porsche Centre Hatfield), who spoke on behalf of the sponsors and highlighted the importance of partnership and engagement across the region.

Attendees were also welcomed by Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, Robert Voss CBE CStJ, alongside Sarah Moreland MBE, Executive Director of the Hertfordshire Agricultural Society, and Dr David Howie DL, President of the Hertfordshire Agricultural Society, who each shared insight into the significance of the County Show and its role in celebrating Hertfordshire’s agricultural heritage and wider community.

Construction careers come alive for hundreds of the next generation Almost 200 students from Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire explored the world of construction at an interactive careers event, trying out skills and discovering opportunities to shape their future careers.

Insight Day at Stevenage Education Support Centre gave students practical experience of the construction sector, from bricklaying and tiling to plumbing, wiring, drylining and even a dumper truck simulation. Through immersive activities, teamwork challenges and live demonstrations, participants explored a wide range of trades and potential career pathways.

The event is part of the Hop Into Construction initiative, led by Hertfordshire Cornerstone Construction Group members Willmott Dixon, Morgan Sindall, BAM, AVV Solutions, in partnership with Hertfordshire Futures.

Since its beginnings as smaller taster sessions, Insight Day has grown into a large-scale event, attracting over 20 schools, more than 30 volunteers and a dozen employers this year. Colleges and apprenticeship providers also joined, helping students link their study options with real career opportunities.

Natalie Sidey, social value manager at Willmott Dixon said: “Insight Day is more

than just trying out trades, it’s about shaping the next generation of builders, engineers and project managers. Seeing students gain confidence, discover new skills and imagine themselves in a career in construction is what makes these events so impactful.

“It’s incredible to see how the programme has grown from small beginnings into the engaging experience it is today.”

The programme has made a significant impact, raising awareness of construction careers and providing tangible opportunities for young people.

June Wilkinson, social sustainability manager, South at BAM, said: “The Insights Day is a fantastic opportunity for students to ‘have a go’ at trades and learn about careers that they have only heard about. This helps them make an informed decision about college courses and apprenticeships.”

Herts college partners with luxury hotel to tackle skills shortages A collaboration between a Hertfordshire college and a prestigious hotel is helping to address skills shortages head-on by connecting education directly with industry.

Students at West Herts College are being supported into employment through the long-standing partnership with The Grove in Watford, gaining hands-on experience, structured development pathways and direct access to employers at a time when many young people are struggling to secure their first role.

Diana McIldowie, Head of Careers and Education at West Herts College, said: “This partnership gives our students a clear pathway into employment at a time when many young people are facing real challenges entering the workforce. Businesses who want greater financial certainty are increasingly choosing short-term and more inclusive commercial office leases or serviced office agreements, typically via a short-term lease or a licence to occupy. The use of these types of arrangements is growing, but there are key differences between a lease and a licence to occupy which all parties need to understand. Here are some of the key considerations:

Short term lease Shorter leases typically last for 6-36 months.

Most will be contracted out of the 1954 Act, meaning there is not a statutory right to renew the lease at the end of the term. If the tenant wants renewal rights, then these need to be negotiated into the heads of terms before the lease is signed. A lease gives a tenant stronger rights and exclusive possession for a fixed period.

For landlords, these shorter and more inclusive service leases often mean being more actively involved in the day to day running of the premises.

However, with shorter leases, rents can be higher with shorter void periods between tenants.

In my experience, office tenants increasingly like having the guarantee of one monthly fee without fluctuations to help with managing cash flow, so with a shorter lease, other costs are often bundled together. They also prefer the time saved by the landlord arranging for all of its office service needs so that they can focus on running their businesses.

along with deposit requirements. They should make sure trading activities match the permitted use and planning class. There can still be dilapidation claims linked to a short lease, so the tenant needs to understand reinstatement wording. Keep photographic evidence where appropriate.

For landlords, it is advised to consider the use of short term 1954 Act excluded leases rather than licences in order to avoid tenants remaining in situation after the term and inadvertently acquiring unwanted protections under the 1954 Act.

This short-term all-inclusive lease could cover everything from the rent, service charges for communal areas, building expenses such as council tax, building insurance, repairs and maintenance. It may also include utilities and services such as electricity, water, internet, IT fire safety, electrical testing cleaning and manned reception areas/security.

A licence to occupy A licence to occupy can also provide flexibility for both the landlord and tenant, with one monthly fee, but there is less security for the tenant than a lease. Licences are simpler and faster to put into place and are often used in co-working spaces.

Typically, the monthly payment covers everything associated with the tenant’s occupation of the space. There may still be some extra costs such as booking meeting rooms or event space which typically have separate charges.

Hidden costs Some occupiers may be concerned about the lack of transparency around costs when they are ‘bundled’ into one monthly rental package, as the landlord chooses all of the suppliers.

Businesses will still need their own insurance for contents, public liability, employers liability and business interruption insurance.

A licence to occupy can be terminated more easily, so would be less suitable for a business investing in the fit-out of the space.

Your solicitor should still carry out a commercial lease review, which will check for landlord’s legal title and any obligations being passed with it to the tenant and the property’s compliance with such things as EPC and Minimum Energy Efficiency standards compliance, asbestos records, fire safety measures. It might be possible to negotiate a break clause if one is not included as well as the ability to assign the lease if the business fundamentally changes or is sold.

There will also be several post-completion matters for the tenant to consider such as notifying the local authority for business rates and applying for reliefs, checking if Stamp Duty Land Tax is payable on the lease and making sure operational procedures are updated to reflect the new premises.

With any length commercial lease or licence to occupy there are a number of legal issues to consider. If you need guidance, whether a landlord or a commercial tenant get in touch.

It is important for tenants to understand if they have a lease or a licence and the responsibilities and rights of each.

For tenants negotiating a short-term lease, they should pay attention to where there might be ‘hidden’ costs which impact on cashflow such as flexibility to exit. If there is a break clause, it is important to understand what the conditions are which allow it to be used, for example no rent arrears, serving notice correctly and giving the property back free from occupation rights.

A short-term lease is typically priced higher, as an open-market rent review won’t be applicable.

Many landlords are looking at using shorter term leases as a way of keeping rents in line with the open market as upwards only rent reviews are now banned.

Named after the rivers Chess, Gade and Colne, which flow through the area, Three Rivers is home to just under 94,000 residents. The district includes the key population centres of Rickmansworth, Chorleywood, Croxley Green, Abbots Langley and South Oxhey, alongside a number of smaller villages and hamlets. Across these communities, residents enjoy exceptional connectivity, with the M25 running through the district, alongside high-performing local schools, strong community networks and a rich mix of cultural, leisure and sporting opportunities.

A defining feature of the district is its rich natural environment.

In addition to the creative industries, Three Rivers benefits from a strong visitor and leisure economy. The Grove, a five-star resort set within 300 acres of countryside, attracts visitors nationally and internationally. With luxury accommodation, award-winning dining, a championship golf course and extensive leisure activities, it represents a significant hospitality asset for the district.

Watersmeet Theatre in Rickmansworth provides a complementary cultural offer, hosting live music, comedy, film, theatre and community events. With a 515-seat auditorium and a strong programme of touring and local performances, it plays

an important role in supporting both the cultural life of the district and its evening economy. The annual pantomime remains a key highlight, attracting large audiences each year.

Community-focused retail and events also contribute to local vibrancy. Rickmansworth’s monthly market transforms the town centre into a hub of independent traders, artisan producers and food vendors, while seasonal events at Watersmeet extend this activity into the winter months with a festive market and familyfocused entertainment.

The district’s commitment to health and wellbeing is further reflected in initiatives such as the Active Parks programme, which brings accessible outdoor activity sessions to parks, woodlands and open spaces across the district. Three Rivers District Council is developing a masterplan to protect habitats, improve facilities and enhance accessibility.

The project is currently backed by a £736,515 development grant and, subject to approval from The National Lottery Heritage Fund of a full £4 million grant in 2027, the long-term vision is to boost biodiversity, improve infrastructure and strengthen the Aquadrome’s role as a valued nature reserve and community space.

Three Rivers is also investing in long-term environmental sustainability. The council continues to build on its strong recycling performance while expanding programmes to reduce carbon emissions, to expand low-carbon transport and improve energy efficiency with the addition of low carbon heating for the council offices.

Further initiatives include the rollout of EV chargers, support for home and business energy improvements and collaboration on wider infrastructure planning through the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan.

These efforts are closely aligned with broader growth and development priorities, including the emerging Local Plan, which aims to deliver high-quality, climate-resilient homes while protecting biodiversity and preserving the district’s green character.

Three Rivers Homes, a joint venture between the council and Chime Housing, has enabled the council and the housing association to work collaboratively to deliver much needed new affordable housing within the district. This includes the delivery of the Chess Development in South Oxhey, creating an additional 33 units of affordable rental and home ownership options for residents. Further development activity includes the delivery of 53 high-quality affordable homes at Foxgrove Path, South Oxhey, offering a well-balanced mix of tenures to support diverse housing needs. In addition, the regeneration of three former garage sites will bring forward 16 new affordable homes, comprising a scheme in Mill End delivering six homes, alongside two sites in Maple Cross providing a further 10 homes.

Through the council’s strategic joint venture with Three Rivers Homes, the redevelopment of the former British Red Cross building in Croxley Green represents a significant investment in community infrastructure. This project will transform an outdated facility into a modern, mixed-use development, delivering eight affordable homes alongside enhanced community space and new Parish Council offices, creating a vibrant and sustainable local hub.

Via the use of various funding streams, including the central Government’s Local Authority Housing Fund (LAHF) and Section 106 affordable housing contributions from developers, Three Rivers Homes continues to work together to deliver further affordable housing in the district, with a number of developments underway that will see a significant increase in the long-term affordable housing provision in the district.

Public service delivery in Three Rivers has also been independently recognised. A recent Local Government Association peer review described the council as “effective, committed and community driven” and particular praise was given to initiatives such as Healthy Hubs, which bring together organisations to improve resident wellbeing and reduce pressure on statutory services.

Looking ahead, the wider context of local government reorganisation across Hertfordshire will shape how services are delivered in future. Proposals currently under consideration aim to streamline local government into unitary authorities and, once approved, changes are expected to take effect from 1 April 2028, with services continuing as normal in the interim.

Across its towns, villages and landscapes, Three Rivers continues to evolve as a district defined by opportunity, collaboration and quality of life. With a strong economic base, a thriving creative sector, outstanding natural scenery and a clear commitment to sustainability, it remains a place where communities can grow and excel while staying closely connected to the environment around them.

On the ground, investment continues with projects including a new mountain bike trail in Whippendell Woods; more than £3 million worth of upgrades to Central and Woodside Leisure Centres; and £300,000 in neighbourhood grants supporting community initiatives. Together, these schemes reflect a coordinated approach to long-term economic resilience and quality of life.

Watford continues to attract major employers including Warner Bros, KPMG, Ralph Lauren, Hilton Worldwide, TJX Europe and PwC, many concentrated along Clarendon Road Watford, which has been transformed through sustained private investment.

This has helped establish Watford as a net in-commuting borough within South West Hertfordshire, reinforcing its position as a regional employment hub. Its economy is characterised by a mix of multinational corporations, SMEs and specialist firms operating in close proximity.

A golden start to the day Strong business relationships often begin with a simple conversation, and there was no shortage of those as members came together for a breakfast dedicated to networking, collaboration and shared learning.

Held at the Hertfordshire Chamber offices, the Gold and Platinum Members’ Networking Breakfast brought together 23 members for a morning of introductions and Chamber updates in a welcoming and engaging environment.

Designed to help members get the most from their Chamber membership, the event provided an opportunity for attendees to learn more about member benefits, build valuable connections and share insights with fellow businesses.

The event welcomed a mix of familiar faces and first-time attendees, creating a lively atmosphere with plenty of conversation, introductions and ideas being exchanged.

As part of the format, each attendee delivered a two-minute introduction, helping to spark conversations and identify opportunities for future collaboration. The Chamber provided several prompts to help discussions, covering topics such as industry trends, business advice, partnership opportunities and experiences working with clients.

Understanding change and making connections over coffee A morning of conversation, connection and practical business insight brought members together in Hatfield, as Silver Members gathered to share experiences, build relationships and hear the latest updates affecting employers.

The Silver Members’ Networking Breakfast welcomed 43 attendees to the Chamber offices for a session that focused on advice, guidance, networking and how to make the most of Chamber membership.

Alongside networking and two-minute introductions from each attendee, guests heard from Miranda Mulligan, Senior Solicitor at Longmores Solicitors, who delivered an informative update on recent and upcoming changes in employment law.

Future leaders take centre stage at inspiring breakfast Ambition and opportunity were at the heart of a recent gathering of young professionals from across Hertfordshire, where attendees came together to build connections and take inspiration for the next stage of their careers The Young Professionals Networking Breakfast, hosted at the Chamber offices, combined informal networking with structured introductions and keynote insight, offering attendees the opportunity to build relationships across sectors while gaining exposure to a range of professional experiences.

A key feature of the morning was the 60-second introductions from attendees, providing each with the opportunity to share who they are, what they do and what they are looking to gain from their careers.

This was followed by a keynote address from Stephanie Kyle, Associate Architect and Head of Inclusive Design at Floyd Slaski Architects Ltd, whose career spans major projects across education, healthcare and mental health sectors in the UK and internationally.

Stephanie spoke about her career journey, the importance of inclusive design and how organisations can better consider accessibility beyond traditional frameworks, including neurodiversity and wider inclusion in the built environment.

The event was hosted by Jordan Thomas, High Performance Manager at Oaklands College and Chamber Board Member, who guided the morning’s programme and facilitated discussions throughout.

Preparing workplaces for a new era of employment law With major changes to employment law on the horizon, businesses are increasingly looking for clarity, guidance and solutions. A recent gathering of HR professionals and business leaders provided exactly that, offering expert insight into what the upcoming reforms could mean for workplaces across Hertfordshire.

The HR Forum: Implications of the Employment Rights Act brought together the business community for a timely and informative breakfast event, delivered by the Chamber in partnership with Longmores Solicitors at the Marriott Hanbury Manor Hotel and Country Club.

The 61 attendees heard from Richard Gvero, Senior Partner and Head of Commercial and Employment, and Miranda Mulligan, Senior Solicitor, from Longmores Solicitors, who provided a clear and practical overview of the Employment Rights Act 2025, which is being implemented in 2026/7.

The session explored a number of key changes, including reforms to unfair dismissal rights, statutory sick pay, flexible working, zero-hours contracts, trade union rights and redundancy processes.

Delegates also received guidance on the expanding duty to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace and the practical steps organisations should be taking to remain compliant as new legislation comes into force.

A Q&A session followed the presentation, giving attendees the opportunity to raise questions and consider how the changes could affect their own organisations in practice.

Mary Sykes, Corporate Relations, said: “Employment law is evolving at a significant pace, making it more important than ever for businesses to stay informed and prepared. This forum provided delegates with valuable insight into the upcoming changes and practical guidance on the steps organisations can take now to manage risk and ensure compliance. The level of

engagement throughout the morning demonstrated just how relevant these reforms are to employers across Hertfordshire.”

The annual HR Forum continues to provide businesses with access to expert advice and up-to-date guidance on key employment issues, helping organisations navigate change with confidence and stay ahead of developments affecting the workplace.

Afternoon tea shines light on invisible resilience of women in leadership For women navigating senior roles across business and education, a recent gathering offered a space to reflect and share experiences that often remain unspoken in the workplace.

The Women in Leadership Afternoon Tea, hosted by the Chamber and held at Rothamsted Manor, welcomed men and women to an event designed to bring together professionals across Hertfordshire for some shared insight and meaningful conversation.

Claire Dolan, Deputy Principal at Oaklands College, delivered a candid and, at times, emotional talk titled The Double Lives We Lead: The Invisible Resilience of Women in Leadership.

Claire shared reflections from her personal and professional journey with honesty, humour and warmth, highlighting the importance of inclusive and supportive workplace cultures.

She spoke about the need for organisations to create environments where employees feel able to acknowledge personal challenges without stigma and emphasised the value of flexibility in enabling people to balance life’s demands while continuing to grow and succeed professionally.

A Q&A and networking session followed, allowing guests to reflect on the discussion and connect with fellow attendees.

From Albert Square to qualifying in care EastEnders star Natalie Cassidy has become a qualified carer after completing a course at a leading Hertfordshire further education college, fulfilling her lifelong ambition and helping to shine a light on the experiences of UK carers.

Natalie’s journey studying a BTEC in health and social care at North Hertfordshire College is documented in the BBC One series Natalie Cassidy: Caring Together, which follows her from enrolment through to results day at the college’s Stevenage campus.

Along the way, viewers gain an insight into North Hertfordshire College’s health and social care provision, as well as its partnerships with healthcare employers.

Natalie said: “I loved every second of studying at the College.

Walking back into education wasn’t easy, but the tutors and students made me feel so welcome and I slotted in very quickly. The college is bustling with energy and enthusiasm, full of hard-working, great people. I’m honoured to have been a part of it.”

Throughout the series, Natalie and her classmates share their personal experiences and motivations for pursuing careers in care. For Natalie, that included reflecting on her time caring for her father, while fellow students opened up about their own experiences, including one classmate who had been a young carer since the age of four.

Principal and CEO of North Hertfordshire College Kit Davies said: “I am incredibly proud to see North Hertfordshire College’s health and social care provision showcased in Natalie Cassidy: Caring Together.

“I’d like to say a huge thank you to the BBC, Big Mountain Productions and Natalie for their hard work in producing this series with our college. It’s an honour for North Hertfordshire College to be supporting the BBC in raising the profile of the care sector.

To prepare for industry placements, students took part in both classroom-based learning and hands-on practical sessions in the college’s NHS-standard mock hospital ward and fully equipped independent living space.

As a college, we know that our staff, students and facilities are brilliant, but it’s amazing to have the opportunity to show just how brilliant they are to a wider audience.

It’s been great to be a part of this journey with her and show what it’s really like to study and work in care.”

The series formed part of the BBC’s Caring Matters initiative, a week of special programming designed to help audiences better understand and navigate caring responsibilities.

A taste of Tewinbury is coming to Hertford A family-run Hertfordshire hospitality business has expanded its presence in the county with the acquisition of two venues in the heart of Hertford as part of plans to bring its farm-to-table ethos and independent hospitality offering into the town.

Tewinbury, the riverside farm, hotel and events destination located just outside the town, has acquired the Hertford House Hotel and The Cow and Stout pub.

The move marks a significant milestone for the Williams family, whose connection to Tewinbury dates back to 1931. What began as a working dairy farm has evolved over three generations into a hospitality destination renowned for its seasonal food, homegrown produce and connection to the surrounding countryside.

Hertford House, which occupies two Georgian townhouses in the town centre, offers 28 bedrooms alongside a restaurant and bar, while The Cow and Stout has

established itself as one of Hertford’s most popular pubs.

The Williams family said: “Our vision is to bring the farm to Hertford. This means seasonal food made with produce from our land, spaces where people feel connected and a focus on independence and community.

“We are committed to keeping The Cow and Stout a proper pub that Hertford can

Chamber’s charity Patron dedicated to making meaningful difference Paul Robin, CEO of Hertfordshire Community Foundation, talks to Sarah Dale about his pride in being Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce’s official charity Patron and supporting more than 1,000 charities across the county, his bighearted team, and staying resilient in turbulent times.

From supporting people in food and energy poverty to ensuring isolated older members of the community are not forgotten, Hertfordshire Community Foundation empowers small charities and voluntary groups across Hertfordshire with grants of up to £10,000.

“Being appointed as the Chamber official charity Patron has put us in front of the Hertfordshire business community at events, networking breakfasts or evenings, and has helped us open up conversations with fellow members,” he said.

It is predominantly funded by philanthropic individuals, families and businesses that want to make a difference by supporting organisations which help the most vulnerable and marginalised in the county. The grants support organisations that are providing vital services to address most areas of social need, such as homelessness, food and energy poverty, mental health, domestic violence, loneliness and isolation in the elderly, disabilities and minority groups.

“We have had several new funds set up via these connections and we are proud of the excellent relationships that have been fostered. Funds have also been raised for us through auctions and raffles at events such as the Inspiring Hertfordshire Awards.

“The HCF team that I am fortunate to work with every day are dedicated to making a meaningful difference through the grants we administer,” said Paul Robin, CEO of HCF. “Our expertise is the knowledge we have built up over years of working with the charity and voluntary sector in Hertfordshire, so HCF is well-placed to ensure the maximum impact for the grants that are made. Every member of the team has a big heart and genuinely cares about making a positive difference to those that need it most.”

The twin effect of rising costs and fewer donations impacts the charity sector, but Paul argues that it is a resilient sector which “needs to be smart about how it makes progress”.

“In our case, we are fortunate to have built up endowment funds from generous philanthropists and businesses over nearly 40 years,” he said.

“We are also pleased to have a strong partnership with Hertfordshire County Council, which entrusts HCF to distribute certain funds on its behalf. We are also strengthening our partnerships, such as the newly formed partnership with Hertfordshire Constabulary that we announced earlier this year.

“We have grown over the past few years and as challenging as the next year or two may be, I am optimistic that we have the right strategy in place, the right partnerships and relationships and the right people to deliver steady growth in challenging circumstances.

So, we will keep working hard, smartly and in partnership.

“There are lots of external factors that will continue to challenge our businesses such as global uncertainty, reorganisation of local government, new technologies to understand and so on; yet I am optimistic that the innovative and resilient businesses and people of Hertfordshire will continue to find ways to succeed and prosper.”

HCF joined the Chamber four years ago as the organisation wanted to raise its profile in the business community in the county and to have a platform to explain the benefits for businesses to have their own charitable fund with HCF (where the administration is taken care of and the grants distributed make a real difference to the causes they care about).

“We have had a few London Marathon runners too from the Chamber, including Donna Schulz who raised well over £5,000 for HCF last year. Although Donna has stepped back from her CEO role, we are delighted that she has agreed to become an HCF Ambassador.”

Paul’s advice to new Chamber members is to be proactive.

“Don’t expect opportunities to come to you,” said Paul.

“Decide what you want to achieve from your membership and have a plan to achieve those goals. Ensure you speak to the people you don’t know when attending an event. I know that sounds obvious, but we are all guilty of spending too much time with the people we already do business with rather than actively meeting new people.”

So, what are Paul’s proudest achievements, both personally and professionally?

“Professionally, I am most proud that we help over 1,000 charities, voluntary groups and individuals each year. Personally, my greatest achievement will be walking my eldest daughter down the aisle in October!”

Hertfordshire sets out its ambition to become the UK’s innovation heartland Hertfordshire’s economic ambitions took centre stage at the Investing in Hertfordshire’s Future conference, bringing together leaders from business, education, local government and the voluntary sector to showcase the county’s strengths and opportunities as it delivers the newly launched Economic Strategy 2025–2036.

The conference focused on turning ambition into action, with plans to unlock investment, strengthen infrastructure, support high-growth businesses and ensure local people have the skills needed to thrive in the economy of the future. Delegates also explored how growth can be inclusive, creating opportunities for young people,

underrepresented groups and communities across the county.

Hertfordshire’s global reputation for innovation was also brought to life by Vanessa Viney, Head of Innovation at Airbus Defence & Space UK, who highlighted the county’s contribution to some of the world’s most ambitious space programmes.

“We’ve built a Mars rover…spacecraft going to Mercury…and around a third of geostationary satellites started here in Hertfordshire” She also highlighted the strength of Hertfordshire’s business ecosystem, with Airbus working with around 2,000 suppliers, with nearly half being SMEs, helping local businesses grow.

With Hertfordshire Futures committing £30 million over the next three years to help unlock further public and private investment, the county is well positioned to deliver the ambitions of the Economic Strategy and drive sustainable growth for the years ahead.

As Lord-Lieutenant Robert Voss CBE described it, Hertfordshire remains a true “county of opportunity” – one that is shaping its future through collaboration, innovation and shared ambition.

And yet, it remains one of the few digital channels businesses genuinely own both here in the UK and globally.

In 2025, email usage in the UK grew, with approximately 52.5 million UK adults using email and checking it regularly.

Email is also still the preferred communication channel for important updates for around 75 per cent of UK consumers.

So why does email so often feel underwhelming? The issue isn’t the channel. It’s how email is being used and what it’s being asked to do.

The problem with volume Many email strategies are built around frequency rather than relevance. More sends. More automation. More touchpoints.

The result is predictable and messages blur together, engagement declines and email becomes something audiences tolerate rather than value.

This isn’t because people don’t read email anymore. It’s because most of the emails they receive simply aren’t worth opening.

Helpful leadership Lauren Mackenzie, Partner and Head of Inheritance Disputes at Longmores Solicitors, talks to Sarah Dale about the importance of asking questions and how her dad has influenced her leadership style Stay humble, stay grounded, and help others grow.

That’s the leadership advice Lauren Mackenzie lives by as a Partner and Head of Inheritance Disputes at Longmores Solicitors, which has provided trusted legal advice to private, commercial and property clients in Hertford and the Hertfordshire area since 1819.

“You can be a leader and say all the right things but if you’re not walking the walk, it’s not genuine,” says Lauren, who joined Longmores Solicitors just over 10 years ago.

“I would describe my leadership style as facilitative; I like to help people to achieve the best output that suits them. I like to be a helpful, encouraging voice to others. That’s how people grow – and it also helps me as a leader because you’re not micromanaging everything that your team does. It’s so important to let people find their fit and their own way of doing things.

“I also believe that it is important to be available and accessible because it’s absolutely crucial for people to be able to ask questions. I don’t want people worrying about whether they look stupid for asking questions or if someone would be angry with them for clarifying things.

“Having helpful leadership early on in your career helps you to grow in confidence and ability. We have a lovely culture here where teams will bounce ideas off other teams and everyone is confident to ask questions. I know how difficult and stressful it can be when leaders don’t want you to ask questions and that’s not a helpful way to support someone’s development.”

Lauren’s most helpful pieces of leadership advice have been provided by her dad.

“He was in a leadership role and he was very good at it,” she says.

“As I progressed in my career, I would often talk to Dad about leadership, and I have learnt lots of really helpful nuggets over the years from him. He could spot talent in people and I’ve always tried to do the same with my own leadership. He would advise putting what you say into action, stay humble and stay grounded.”

Lauren started her career as a Commercial Litigator but has discovered since specialising in inheritance disputes that it perfectly blends her two key skill areas: law and empathy.

“It means I get to use another part of my personality; I am an approachable person and have a listening ear,” she explains.

“I like the idea of championing the underdog and it’s part of the reason I got into disputes. Often, clients don’t only need legal advice. They also need someone who can empathise. Clients are dealing with disputing families, which can be super taxing and really tough, especially if they’re going through grief too.

“This marries up two things I love: the more cerebral, law part of my job and the human, empathetic element.”

Lauren admits she can find it difficult to switch off sometimes.

“I’m a person who does get involved,” she says. “Some people don’t get emotionally involved, but this is an emotional part of law, and if I didn’t get involved, I wouldn’t do such a good job.”

As a mum of two children – a daughter who is 11 and son who is six – Lauren’s home life is just as busy with “101 things to focus on”.

“Busyness can help you switch off from work,” she says.

“I love doing exercise, including trampoline fitness, Pilates and bungee fitness. It’s a really important facet of my week, as everything else is crazy.

“I also love dancing but I don’t really do dancing any more except in the kitchen! I love music and I love going for walks with my kids.”

Longmores Solicitors, which has 79 employees, has been a member of Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce since January 1997 and became a Patron 12 years ago. They launched their new Inheritance Disputes team in April this year.

Five common mistakes commercial landlords make when granting a lease Commercial property can be an excellent investment, but many of the problems landlords face are not caused by difficult tenants or changing market conditions. More often than not, they stem from decisions made before the lease was even signed.

In commercial leasing transactions, certain issues arise repeatedly when leases are prepared for landlords. The five points below highlight frequent drafting and negotiation mistakes at grant stage.

1. Reusing an old lease without updating it A common question is whether an old lease can simply be reused for a new tenant.

Although this may appear to save time and cost, it can create problems later.

Every property, tenant and transaction is different. A lease that was suitable five or ten years ago may no longer adequately protect a landlord’s interests. Legislation changes, market conditions evolve and commercial objectives shift over time.

It is common for landlords to rely on a lease drafted for a different tenant or property. This can create uncertainty about repair obligations, service charge provisions and alterations.

The lease should be reviewed and tailored to the specific transaction.

Practical takeaway: Before issuing draft lease documents, review any precedent against the current property, tenant and deal terms.

2. Assuming all service charge costs can be recovered Some landlords assume they can recover all costs associated with maintaining and managing a property. In practice, a landlord can recover only costs expressly permitted by the lease.

If the service charge provisions are unclear or incomplete, landlords may become responsible for expenses they expected the tenant to pay. A frequent issue is that maintenance and management costs cannot be recovered because the lease does not contain the necessary wording.

Carefully drafted service charge provisions can help reduce the risk of disputes and support clearer cost allocation.

Practical takeaway: Check that the service charge clause clearly states which management, repair and compliance costs are recoverable.

3. Failing to obtain adequate security from the tenant Before granting a lease, it is important to consider what would happen if the tenant stopped paying rent.

Landlords often spend significant time negotiating rent but less time considering what protection is available if the tenant defaults.

The risk is usually greater where the tenant is a newly formed company or has limited trading history.

For landlords considering redevelopment, sale or occupation of the property themselves, understanding this distinction is important.

Practical takeaway: Decide early whether security of tenure is to be excluded and build the statutory notices and declarations into the transaction timetable.

5. Failing to clearly define repairing obligations Some landlords assume the tenant will automatically be responsible for maintaining the property. However, this depends entirely on the lease wording and the extent of the premises being let.

Depending on the circumstances, landlords may wish to request a rent deposit or a personal guarantor. These measures can provide valuable protection if the tenant experiences financial difficulties.

In some cases, landlords can unexpectedly find themselves responsible for costly repairs to roofs, external walls, structural elements or common parts because the lease does not clearly allocate responsibility.

Practical takeaway: Assess covenant strength early and decide whether a rent deposit, guarantor, or both should be required before heads of terms are finalised.

A recurring issue is that significant repair costs fall on the landlord rather than the tenant because the lease does not clearly allocate repairing obligations.

4. Not understanding a tenant’s rights when the lease ends

Taking time to define repairing obligations clearly at the outset can help reduce the risk of disputes and unexpected expenditure later.

When granting a commercial lease, landlords can often choose whether the tenancy will include security of tenure rights under Part II of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954.

If the lease includes security of tenure rights, the tenant will generally have a statutory right to remain in occupation and to apply for a new lease when the contractual term ends.

If the lease excludes security of tenure (often called “contracting out” of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954), the tenant will generally be required to leave when the lease expires unless the parties agree otherwise.

Excluding security of tenure is effective only if the statutory contracting-out procedure is followed before the tenant becomes contractually bound.

Landlords are sometimes surprised to discover that a tenant can remain in occupation after the contractual expiry date because the lease was not properly contracted out. By the time this is identified, plans for redevelopment, sale or occupation may already be affected.

Practical takeaway: Align the repair covenant with the premises definition and service charge provisions so responsibilities are clearly allocated.

Final thoughts A commercial lease is much more than a document recording the rent and term. It sets the framework for a relationship that may last many years and can have a significant impact on the value and management of a property.

Regularly reviewing lease templates, drafting service charge provisions carefully, obtaining appropriate tenant security, understanding security of tenure, and defining repairing obligations clearly can help reduce legal and operational risk.

Seeking legal advice before a lease is granted is often a proportionate step that can help identify and manage issues at an early stage.

Why this doesn't work There are many problems with using the “break-fix” method to IT maintenance, as described above, in the current business environment. First, consider what an issue like the one described above really means, in terms of productivity.

Naturally, the employee will not be able to work until their technology is fixed. The computer repair person has to travel to your office, adding to the time it will take to resolve the issue. When they do get there, you have a potential distraction drawing your other employees’ attentions away from their work, in addition to the employee whose technology is being repaired.

Finally, once the issue is resolved and the repair person has been paid for time and materials spent, your employee can return to work. Hopefully, they will be able to avoid missing deadlines and opportunities IT issues and downtime are expensive, and these expenses can build up rapidly over time.

Not only are you dealing with a loss in productivity, you are also losing potential revenue that employee could be generating.

Bringing IT services to modern times with managed services The managed service approach to IT has some definite benefits to it, which largely come from the ideals and best practices that shape it.

Herts residents invited to plant 100,000 free trees in push for greener future Hertfordshire residents are once again being invited to play their part in tackling climate change, as the popular Your Tree Our Future scheme returns, offering 100,000 free trees, 3,550 more than last year.

Delivered in partnership with the county’s 10 district and borough councils, as well as several local charities, the initiative offers people the opportunity to plant trees at home, helping to enhance local community spaces and to support wildlife. One of the project’s key supporters, Herts FullStop, will also donate 5,000 trees to this year’s giveaway.

Through the scheme, residents can apply for up to five individual trees, choosing from a selection of eight native species suited to Hertfordshire’s landscape and climate. Alternatively, applicants can request four trees and a hedgerow pack with enough trees to plant 6m of hedgerow, ideal for creating natural boundaries and wildlife habitats.

Cllr Paul Zukowskyj, Executive Member for Environment, Transport and Growth at Hertfordshire County Council, said: “Planting a tree is one of the simplest yet most meaningful actions residents can take to support our environment. Not only do trees help reduce carbon in our atmosphere, but they also create greener, healthier places to live – boosting wellbeing, supporting wildlife and helping our communities adapt to the challenges of climate change.

“This scheme is a key part of our wider ambition to make Hertfordshire more sustainable.

“After taking on leadership of Hertfordshire County Council, we set an ambitious target of 101,000 trees and we’ve beaten it by more than 25 per cent, planting 126,829 across the county.

Now, we’re going even further, with a new, more ambitious target of 150,000.”

Together, these trees are expected to make a significant contribution to reducing carbon emissions while improving air quality and supporting biodiversity across the county.

Trees will be available while stocks last, with a set allocation for each district and borough.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “Watford is proud to support this initiative which gives residents a simple way to make a difference. Every tree planted makes a real difference by strengthening biodiversity, improving air quality and helping to create greener, healthier places for current and future generations. I would encourage residents to take part and play their role in building a more sustainable Hertfordshire.”

Residents who apply will receive confirmation by email, along with details of how and where to collect their trees from a local distribution point in early December 2026.

Herts businesses explore climate risk and resilience at sustainability workshop Businesses from across Hertfordshire recently came together for an online workshop focused on sustainability, responsibility and the practical steps organisations can take to adapt to a changing environmental landscape.

The Herts Go Green and Grow session brought together 24 attendees for expert insight and open discussion.

Organised by the Chamber and hosted by Abby Fisher, Director of Insight MCL, the programme provided a collaborative forum for businesses committed to improving their environmental impact.

Attendees heard from David Hawes, Co-founder and CEO of Net Zero International, and Emma Norrington, Director of Development at Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust, who provided an overview of UK climate adaptation policy and the role of the Climate Change Committee (CCC) in assessing national progress on emissions reduction and climate resilience.

The session also explored findings from the CCC’s fourth independent assessment of climate risk, A Well Adapted UK, published in May. The report outlines the increasing risks associated with rising temperatures, including more frequent heatwaves, intensified flooding and growing drought and wildfire conditions.

The workshop examined eight priority areas for action, including protecting against heat, managing flood risk,

addressing water scarcity, supporting nature recovery, safeguarding food systems and ensuring infrastructure resilience.

A wider discussion followed, giving attendees the opportunity to share approaches, ask questions and reflect on how sustainability considerations are shaping business decisions across sectors.

Business connections made before breakfast at speed networking event Purposeful conversations and fast-paced introductions set the tone as 40 professionals from across Hertfordshire came together for an early-morning networking session designed to build connections before the working day began.

The Rise, Shine, Connect breakfast at the Cromwell Hotel in Stevenage opened with informal networking before moving into a structured speed networking format, where attendees took turns introducing themselves in a series of timed rounds, with conversational prompts provided on tables by the Chamber.

The format was designed to encourage quality introductions, remove barriers and ensure attendees could connect with as many people as possible in a short space of time.

Ellie Roe, Events Manager at the Chamber, said: “The energy in the room was fantastic, with attendees making a remarkable number of new connections in a short space of time. Businesses face fresh uncertainty as investment and exports weaken UK economy predicted to grow at a slow rate as firms continue to look for stability to drive investment and progress Businesses are facing another challenging period as economic growth remains sluggish, investment falls and inflationary pressures return, according to the latest forecast from the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC).

The forecast suggests the UK economy will continue to grow, but only modestly, with ongoing geopolitical tensions and rising costs creating significant headwinds for firms across the country.

The BCC expects UK GDP to increase by 0.9 per cent in 2026, followed by growth of 1.0 per cent in 2027 and 1.3 per cent in 2028. While these figures indicate the economy is avoiding recession, they also point to a prolonged period of subdued performance.

David Bharier, Deputy Director of Economics and Insights at the British Chambers of Commerce, said the headline growth figures disguise underlying weaknesses within the economy.

“Business investment is expected to fall 2.2 per cent this year, reflecting what BCC surveys consistently show: most SMEs are not increasing investment,” he said.

He added that while the economy is continuing to grow, businesses remain cautious and are often focused on protecting themselves from future disruption rather than expanding operations.

Vicky Pryce, Chair of the BCC Economic Advisory Council, warned that firms need greater certainty if they are to invest and drive growth.

One of the biggest concerns for business leaders is the sharp decline in investment. The forecast predicts business investment will fall by 2.2 per cent in 2026 before remaining broadly flat in 2027. Firms are continuing to face elevated operating costs while navigating an increasingly uncertain global environment.

“The UK economy continues to operate in a fragile and uncertain global environment,” she said. “Firms need greater certainty and stability to unlock investment and growth.

That means urgent action to ease cost pressures, support trade and help businesses recruit and retain talent in an increasingly challenging environment.”

According to the BCC, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East is adding further pressure to the economy through higher energy prices, increased shipping costs and disruption to global supply chains. These factors are also expected to push inflation higher in the months ahead.

For businesses across Hertfordshire and beyond, the message is clear: while growth remains on the horizon, the path ahead is likely to be uneven, with investment, recruitment and international trade all facing significant pressures in the months ahead.

After easing earlier in the year, inflation is forecast to rise again and peak at 3.8 per cent by the end of 2026 before gradually falling back towards the Bank of England’s target over the following two years.

The forecast highlights growing concerns around the labour market. Unemployment is expected to rise to 5.2 per cent in 2026 and 5.5 per cent in 2027 as businesses continue to manage rising labour costs and weaker demand.

Particular concern surrounds younger workers. Youth unemployment is forecast to climb from 16.9 per cent in 2026 to 17.8 per cent in 2027, with businesses reporting that higher employment costs and the increasing use of artificial intelligence are reducing the number of entry-level opportunities available.

International trade is also expected to come under pressure.

UK exports are forecast to decline by 0.2 per cent this year before returning to growth in 2027. The BCC says uncertainty surrounding global markets and disruption to major trade routes are making international trading conditions more difficult for exporters.

Despite the challenges, the BCC believes the UK retains significant long-term strengths, particularly in areas such as innovation, research and artificial intelligence.

Grant helps visually impaired young people get active A leading UK law firm has awarded more than £4,800 to a charity launching an inclusive sports programme for blind and visually impaired children and young people across East Hertfordshire.

Tees’ Better Future Fund has handed a grant of £4,811 to Herts Vision Loss (HVL) to support Vision in Motion, a new initiative designed to help young people aged seven to 25 become more active, build confidence and develop lasting social connections.

The programme will deliver 12 weekly group sessions featuring adapted sports including goalball, VI tennis and cricket, led by trained instructors with specialist knowledge of visual impairment.

Alongside physical activity, participants will take part in workshops focused on teamwork, resilience and personal development. The funding will also provide specialist accessible equipment, including eye shades, tactile markers and auditory aids, as well as digital exercise resources to help participants stay active at home.

The project aims to support 15 young people, helping to reduce isolation, improve physical and emotional wellbeing, and encourage greater independence through sport and shared experiences.

At the BCC’s Global Annual Conference, Shevaun outlined how successive governments had hobbled Britain’s business prospects and the three drivers of growth through which the damage can be fixed.

She urged the next Prime Minister to resist the temptation to pile costs on business, if they want the economy to deliver the growth needed to fund wider priorities.

Shevaun highlighted how delivering growth is the only answer to the UK’s persistent tax, borrowing and spending challenge.

She said: “The difficult truth is, whoever leads the UK, the primary challenge remains the same – delivering growth.

“Outside of the pandemic rebound, UK growth has flatlined year after year. And this economic malaise is nothing new or attributable to the policies of a single government.

“Despite all our strengths, we are failing to fulfil our potential.

Businesses can feel it and voters can feel it too.”

“Government-imposed costs on your average SME have risen by more than 70 per cent in just 10 years.

“At a time of huge economic shocks and global headwinds, successive UK governments have chosen to pile more and more cost on companies. That is no way to run an economy.

“So, if we want to see growth, our political leaders must reduce the burdens on business.

“Taxing businesses more would be a road to ruin. The quickest way to destroy the fragile confidence that we have left. You must back businesses, not tax them, if you want to see growth.

New campaign shines a light on domestic abuse during football tournaments A new awareness campaign is highlighting the hidden impact that major football tournaments can have on victims and survivors of domestic abuse.

As part of the campaign, a physical installation has been placed in Watford town centre featuring a door marked with the number 30, representing the frequency with which emergency calls relating to domestic abuse are made every single day.

The installation is designed to encourage conversations around domestic abuse and highlight the reality faced by many individuals during high-profile sporting events.

HAB Law has joined forces with Herts Domestic Abuse Helpline, Hertfordshire Constabulary, Watford FC and Stevenage FC for the We Won campaign, which launched ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The initiative aims to raise awareness of the increase in domestic abuse incidents that often accompanies major football tournaments and to ensure victims and survivors know where to access support.

Launched at The Harlequin Centre in Watford, the campaign is built around the double meaning of the phrase ‘we won’, words that can represent celebration for football fans but fear and uncertainty for those experiencing abuse at home.

For many victims and survivors, the impact of abuse does not end when the final whistle blows, and it can take time before they feel able to reach out for help.

“The collaborative nature of the campaign reflects exactly what is needed to support victims and survivors in our communities, organisations, services and individuals working together to recognise the signs of abuse, start conversations and ensure that nobody has to face it alone.”

The campaign also seeks to use the reach and influence of football to help tackle violence against women and girls and encourage communities to recognise the signs of abuse.

Ruth Dodsworth, Assistant Chief Constable at Herts Constabulary, said: “Sadly, we know that domestic abuse and violence against women

and girls often increases during major football tournaments and that is why we are proud partners in the We Won campaign. I want all victims and survivors to know that if they contact police, they will be treated with respect and sensitivity. We have specialist officers who investigate domestic abuse offences and tackling violence against women and girls is embedded into our daily response, as we work with our partners to ensure the most appropriate support is provided.”

The campaign forms part of a wider effort by organisations across Hertfordshire to raise awareness of domestic abuse, support victims and survivors and encourage people to seek help when they need it.

Stevenage and Watford FC said: “We know that the World Cup brings people together, but for some, this can be a very trying time.

As a club and charity with strong community links across the county of Hertfordshire, it’s incredibly important that we use our voice for the power of good and to raise awareness of violence against women and girls. We hope that this campaign can raise awareness, open eyes and get more people involved in reducing the shocking 30 per cent rise in domestic violence.”

Students explore government careers during Council visit A new-style work experience programme gave students a closer look at the world of local government and the careers it offers.

A group of 12 Year 8 students from Haileybury Turnford School in Cheshunt visited Broxbourne Council as part of a modern work experience programme designed to help young people explore future career opportunities.

The initiative, run by Hertfordshire Careers Hub, part of Hertfordshire Futures, offers a different approach to traditional work experience by providing shorter, more focused visits to a range of workplaces rather than a week-long placement with a single employer.

During their visit, students were given a guided tour of several Council departments, gaining an insight into the wide range of roles involved in running a local authority.

Department heads provided an overview of their teams’ responsibilities, while students also met staff members working towards industry

qualifications alongside their roles at the Council. The programme aims to help young people understand how their studies relate to the workplace, explore different career paths and identify roles that match their strengths and interests.

The visit concluded with a talk from Councillor Corina Gander, Leader of Broxbourne Council, who explained her role, the work of councillors and how they collaborate with departments across the organisation to serve local residents.

Students also took part in a group exercise that encouraged them to consider ways the Borough could be improved, giving them an opportunity to share ideas and learn more about local government decision-making.

Corina said: “It was a pleasure to welcome the students of Haileybury Turnford School to the Council and speak to them about the work we do for our residents. We are proud to be one of the first workplaces to take part in this new work experience programme,

which has received an overwhelmingly positive response from students and teachers. We trust it provided some guidance and inspiration as they consider their future careers.”

The programme forms part of a wider effort to connect young people with employers and provide meaningful experiences that broaden their understanding of the opportunities available to them.

Hat-trick of deals signals strong demand at business park A trio of new lettings at a major Milton Keynes logistics park has underlined the continued demand for high-quality industrial and logistics space across the region.

BTG Eddisons – incorporating Kirkby Diamond – has completed three significant deals at PLP Logistics Business Park, including the letting of a 29,626 square foot warehouse unit to RWS Global on a long-term lease, acting on behalf of the landlord.

In a further boost to the scheme, a high-performance engineering occupier has taken two Grade A industrial and logistics units at the business park on Brickhill Road. BTG Eddisons completed the deal for the self-contained facilities, which extend to 30,023 square foot and 31,737 square foot respectively.

All three units offer Grade A specification, providing flexibility for advanced manufacturing and logistics operations.

PLP Logistics Business Park is located adjacent to the A5 and within a 10-minute drive of the M1 at junctions

13 and 14. Positioned within the OxfordCambridge Arc, it offers access to 89 per cent of the UK population within a 4.5-hour drive, helping to cement Milton Keynes’ reputation as one of the country’s key locations for logistics, engineering and business growth.

Why did you join the Chamber?

Sika’s UK head office is based in Welwyn Garden City, so we wanted to join a local Chamber to increase our presence in Hertfordshire. Next year marks 100 years since Sika established its base in Welwyn Garden City, so it feels like the perfect opportunity to celebrate that milestone and strengthen our connections with the local business community.

Who do you work for?

I work for Sika Ltd, a global leader in supplying specialist construction chemicals and solutions. What advice would you give someone starting out?

Build relationships, ask questions and be open to learning.

Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and attend networking events. The connections you make and the knowledge you gain can have a significant impact on your business and career.

What do you think is the biggest challenge affecting running and growing a business?

For me, the biggest challenge is dealing with uncertainty.

Things are changing so quickly that it can be difficult to plan, so a lot of the focus is on staying flexible, adapting when needed and continuing to deliver a great service for customers.

What support do you want from government?

I’d like to see continued investment in UK infrastructure and major projects. From my perspective, that investment not only delivers benefits for communities but also gives businesses the confidence to invest in people, skills and innovation for the long term.

How confident are you your business will grow in the next year?

I am optimistic about the year ahead. Demand for infrastructure investment remains strong, particularly within the energy and utilities sectors, and Sika is well positioned to support customers with innovative and sustainable solutions.
