welcome Welcome to the first issue of Inspire for 2026.

It feels like just a moment ago we were welcoming in 2025.

And what a packed year that was.

You can read about some of the events that brought the year to a close over the following pages. One of the biggest successes towards the end of the year was our AI Conference. We had some incredible speakers and an eager audience, all wanting to hear about what AI means for them and their businesses.

You can read about what was discussed and enjoy the fabulous photos on pages 5-10.

The next big event for us will be the Women in Leadership conference in March, another opportunity for everyone – and we mean everyone – to come together to celebrate the incredible women who make a difference in our business community, day in, day out. You’ll find details on page 23.

Of course, as most of you will have heard, I will be stepping down from my role at the Chamber in spring. For me, the time is right to move on to new pastures and explore new opportunities.

It has been the most incredible experience to be CEO of this amazing Chamber, especially through the centenary year, and I am very proud to have had this chance to make a difference for our members.

I am still here for a while and will continue to work hard on your behalf before I hand over the reins.

The University of Hertfordshire supported a landmark AI conference this month, examining how artificial intelligence is changing the way we work, communicate, and do business.

The event at The Fielder Centre in Hatfield Business Park brought together business leaders, technology pioneers, educators, and innovators for a day of inspiring talks, practical workshops, and immersive exhibitions.

Across its curriculum, AI and robotics are embedded not as standalone technical subjects but as interdisciplinary capabilities spanning computer science, engineering, health, creative industries and agriculture.

Students engage in hands-on learning using real datasets, robotics platforms and simulation environments, ensuring graduates are technically proficient, ethically aware and industry-ready.

Herts academics Dr Cristoph Salge, Reader in Artificial Intelligence in Games, and Dr Patrick Holthaus, Reader in Interactive Assistive Technology in the Robotics Research Group, presented at the conference, highlighting AI’s potential to drive innovation.

Attendees explored exhibition stands featuring local startups, AI innovators, and the University’s interactive ‘Robot House Immersive Experience’ - a virtual glimpse inside the Robot House, a four-bedroom home near the College Lane campus transformed into a cutting-edge human-robot interaction research facility.

The University of Hertfordshire is at the forefront of responsible and applied artificial intelligence through a distinctive integration of teaching, research and innovation.

Crucially, the University’s AI agenda is closely aligned with enterprise and public benefit.

Through industrial collaborations, such as Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, research is translated into practical tools that improve healthcare processes, empower mobility, and enhance sustainable food production.

Together, these activities illustrate a coherent vision: AI that is applied, ethical and humancentred, delivering tangible benefits for society, industry and future graduates.

‘Maybe we’re in an era where Picasso is wrong’ Inside Hertfordshire Chamber’s landmark AI Conference Scary. Exciting. Mind-bending. Those feelings lingered long after the doors closed on a landmark AI conference designed to help business leaders not only understand artificial intelligence, but learn how to use it responsibly, strategically and creatively.

Approximately 200 members of the business community gathered at the Fielder Centre in Hatfield for what organisers described as “more than a series of talks”, but rather a “collaboration hub” – a space where optimism and unease met in equal measure. With AI advancing at a pace that outstrips most people’s ability to make sense of it, the

Hertfordshire Chamber’s AI Conference set out to ask a simple but pressing question: are we equipped for what comes next?

CEO Donna Schultz set the tone early, calling Hertfordshire a “thriving hub of innovation” and emphasising the goal of using AI as a “force for good”, a tool to build a “smarter, more connected future”. But it was keynote speaker Dr Robert Smith who provided the day’s defining provocation, invoking Picasso’s famous line: “Computers are useless. They can only give us answers.”

Was Picasso right? Or are we at a turning point?

Is AI creative or just clever?

Dr Smith, scientist, technologist and author, opened with the central question of his talk: “Is AI a Creative Revolution or a Derivative Hype?”

A roomful of raised hands voted for the latter. And in some ways, they weren’t wrong. AI, Robert pointed out, is fundamentally derivative. Its outputs are limited to what it has been trained on. It can remix, reassemble and re-express, but it cannot originate in the way humans do.

Referring to the recent paper The Potemkin Understanding in Large Language Models, Robert explained that AI systems can appear to understand concepts while lacking any true conceptual grasp. This illusion of intelligence (called the ‘Potemkin understanding’) is one of AI’s most persistent and misunderstood limitations.

AI can generate. But it cannot understand. And understanding, Robert argued, is the real seat of creativity.

Yet this isn’t a dismissal of AI’s potential. He reminded the audience that AI is not a sudden invention. “Incredible technologies have always been called AI,” he said, highlighting that artificial intelligence, in various forms, has been evolving for more than 70 years.

So, if AI isn’t new, why does it suddenly feel world-changing?

Perhaps it’s because for the first time we’re being forced to confront what intelligence really is.

Why most AI projects fail Jamie Claret, founder of Autonomate, took the conversation from theory to reality. Rather than focusing on AI’s power, he tackled the less glamorous side: failure.

Drawing on the MIT report The GenAI Divide: State of AI in Business 2025, Jamie revealed a startling statistic: •

95 per cent of generative AI projects fail to deliver measurable business returns

Only 5 per cent drive meaningful revenue growth

The problem, he explained, isn’t the technology, it’s the work.

Using a cup-of-tea analogy, Jamie illustrated how simple tasks for humans can be mind-bogglingly complex for AI. Making tea involves nuance, context, judgement, experience – things humans rarely think about but effortlessly use. AI, on the other hand, doesn’t understand the why, what or how. It only does.

“AI does not fix broken work,” Jamie said. “It magnifies it.”

With tools like ChatGPT only two years old, the speed of adoption is shocking. Matthew emphasised that with AI now sophisticated enough to mimic writing styles, replicate voices and generate flawless phishing emails, “the Nigerian prince scams are long gone”.

Companies rush to adopt AI without first understanding their processes, their goals or their data. The result?

Over-engineered solutions to under-defined problems.

His message was clear: Strategy first. AI second.

“AI is not the superhero,” he said. “It’s the tool.”

The security wake-up call Matthew Higgins, Microsoft AI Business Solutions Ambassador at Pax8, brought a stark reminder that AI’s rise isn’t just an opportunity, it’s a vulnerability.

Spotlight on innovation The conference was sponsored by big names, including CityFibre Digital Academy as Associate Sponsor. Before the keynotes, the three major sponsors shared how AI is shaping their industries.

Google – “The future is being built here in Herts” Stefan Murray, EMEA Regional Lead at Google, unveiled details about the company’s new £5 billion data centre in Waltham Cross, one of the facilities that will be “the backbone of AI”.

With over a decade of AI research behind them, Google is using its infrastructure to drive breakthroughs in cancer screening, drug development and climate modelling.

Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst – AI in medicine Chief Financial Officer and Interim CFO at SBC, Andrew Waters, explored how AI is accelerating drug discovery through 3D and 4D molecular modelling. With the ability to predict how experimental compounds interact with human tissues over time, AI is helping researchers identify viable drug candidates faster and with greater precision.

The result? Quicker, safer delivery of new medicines to patients.

engineering and the creative industries. Students are gaining hands-on experience with real datasets, robots and creative AI tools inside state-of-the-art labs and simulation environments.

Their message was clear: to build the future of AI, we must educate for it.

Breakout sessions – from opportunity to risk Throughout the day, breakout sessions gave attendees the chance to explore AI through practical demonstrations and candid conversations.

Who has AI policies?

IT Builder led an interactive session on workflow automation, sparking a discussion about AI safeguarding policies. While some businesses had begun developing protocols, many admitted they hadn’t even considered the need for them. The session revealed a worrying gap - innocently using AI could mean accidentally breaching contracts or leaking sensitive data.

The new age of cyber threats Perhaps the most unsettling session came from Xpertex, who demonstrated how easy it is to create deep-fake videos with generative tools. While the examples weren’t perfect, the speed and ease with which they were made underscored the real threat – anyone with an internet connection and 10 minutes to spare can create a deep fake.

Can AI take over the world?

The day ended with a panel discussion featuring Robert, Jamie, Colette Mason (Clever Cloggs AI), Marco Delise (SBC), Kamil Maharajh (BDO UK) and Simon Mercer (Pearldrop Video Production).

Among the many thought-provoking questions, one stood out by being half-joke, half-fear: “Is it remotely possible that AI could take over the world?”

Robert answered with conviction: “This is the wrong worry.”

AI poses real risks – job displacement, political manipulation, the spread of misinformation – but sentient authoritarian robots are not one of them. For now, anyway.

Simon added a more optimistic angle, describing AI as opening “a new landscape of creativity”. Meanwhile, Marco explored how AI is transforming scientific discovery and entrepreneurship.

Is Picasso wrong after all?

After a day of debate, demos and candid warnings, the conclusion was more nuanced.

AI does more than give answers. It accelerates ideas, expands access, boosts creativity and reveals patterns humans might miss. But it cannot think for us.

Shaun Keya (Carlsberg Group) discussed using AI to drive innovation, touching on ethical concerns such as environmental impact and cognitive off-loading.

In his talk, Robert referenced Stephen King’s memoir On Writing, quoting from the chapter What Writing Is: “Telepathy, of course.”

That’s because human creativity is a form of shared understanding, an invisible dialogue between people.

AI cannot participate in that dialogue. It can support, imitate and enhance, but it cannot feel, cannot intend, cannot mean.

AI may be a powerful engine to help creativity, but humans remain the drivers. Used responsibly, AI can empower our work, expand our imagination and accelerate innovation.

But it cannot replace the uniquely human context behind art, decisions or ethics.

The conference made one thing clear: AI isn’t superhuman.

It isn’t even human, and that’s exactly why we must treat it with both ambition and caution.

As Hertfordshire’s business community left the venue – curious, inspired and perhaps still a little mind-blown – one thing felt certain. We are entering an era of dramatic change.

Whether Picasso is wrong remains to be seen, but events like this are ensuring we meet the future with eyes open.

Stepping up to lead the Chamber through change With a decade of experience, the new chairman is perfectly placed to support the organisation through leadership transition and shifting economic pressures When Perry Jackson was confirmed as the new chairman of the Hertfordshire Chamber, it marked not only the start of a new chapter for the organisation, but also a personal milestone for someone who has spent a decade shaping its direction. He is settling into the role at a time of significant transition, with his priority being the appointment of a new CEO to replace Donna Schultz.

One minute it’s the AGM, the next you’re recruiting a CEO,” he reflected, acknowledging the honour and the weight of responsibility that now rests on his shoulders as he takes over from Jeremy Bishop. For him, the Chamber’s strength lies in its ability to respond to change rather than be unsettled by it. “The only thing that is constant is change. It’s how we deal with it,” he said.

A clear view of the priorities First on Perry’s agenda is ensuring the incoming CEO is well supported and quickly embedded. “Finding the right person for this key role is a tough job,” he admitted.

“People recognising that this has been done successfully and that we’ve maintained our standing and credibility within the business community – that will be a sign of success.”

Beyond leadership transition, Perry wants the Chamber to strengthen its role as Hertfordshire’s pre-eminent business membership organisation. In a landscape where competitors offer fragments of what the Chamber delivers, he believes the Chamber’s value lies in being comprehensive, relevant and ahead of emerging trends.

“Our job is to take the current proposition and make sure it delivers value. What’s relevant now might not be relevant next year. You have to get ahead of the trends so we can organise discussions, stakeholder engagement and events that genuinely help members,” he explained.

This mindset of staying ahead was evident at the Chamber’s recent AI conference, which he highlights as an example of the Chamber bringing people together around issues that matter.

Understanding SMEs because the Chamber is one Perry’s grounded approach comes partly from his understanding of the pressures facing Hertfordshire’s businesses. As he put it, “The Chamber is just another small SME. It’s in the trenches with most of the membership”.

With rising costs, productivity challenges and reduced confidence, he recognises that many businesses are scrutinising every outgoing. That is why he is determined that membership must offer clear and tangible value.

He sees opportunity for growth in sectors where Hertfordshire is already strong, but under-represented within the Chamber’s current membership. “We’re a bit light in defence and technology, including digital tech and AI. Some of these businesses didn’t even exist two or three years ago,” he said. “We must make sure we’re covering them too, while still supporting our traditional industries.”

He is also watching the rise of renewable and green technologies, though he is candid about the challenges.

“Renewable and green technology shouldn’t cost the earth, if they are to achieve widespread adoption” he said. The main challenge is making then affordable and accessible.

What success will look like Perry is realistic about the months ahead. Yet his ambition is clear. “Strengthening the Chamber offering, responding to trends, making the proposition more relevant, growing membership and keeping renewals high – that’s the goal,” he said.

Asked what he brings personally to the role, Perry, Managing Director of Oventrop UK. cites a career that spans automotive, renewables, HVAC, construction, including family-owned businesses, alongside his decade of Chamber involvement. “I’ve worked in corporates and internationals but also in smaller, agile organisations.

I’m collaborative, data driven, pragmatic and I know the county inside out,” he said.

His appointment was unanimous. “It’s an honour,” he admitted, but added: “There’s always trepidation.

You don’t want to get it wrong.”

Hertfordshire food businesses urged to buy local Food businesses in Hertfordshire are being encouraged to buy locally as part of an accreditation scheme designed to strengthen the local economy, promote healthier eating and improve business sustainability.

Hertfordshire County Council is seeking to collaborate with local suppliers of food and related products for cafes, restaurants and takeaways as part of the Herts Responsible Food Award scheme.

Although sourcing locally can bring clear benefits, many food businesses report that they do not know where to find local suppliers or assume that local products are unaffordable.

To address this, the council is asking local suppliers of healthier or more sustainable products to register their interest in supporting the scheme. Suppliers are invited to offer small discounts to Herts Responsible Food Award holders, helping to make local products more accessible.

In return, the award team will directly promote participating suppliers to current award holders and new applicants, highlighting them as businesses championing healthier eating and sustainability in Hertfordshire.

As part of its wider support for businesses applying to the scheme, the council aims to increase awareness of local sourcing options and help reduce costs through stronger supplier partnerships.

Bidfood and JJ Food Service are already offering exclusive discounts to award holders and the council hopes to direct even more businesses toward local suppliers.

Are you ready for 2026?

Navigating employment law changes ________________________________ Nicola Smyrl Partner, Employment Law Taylor Walton ________________________________ As we enter 2026, all businesses face a changing employment landscape.

The Employment Rights Bill received Royal Assent in December 2025, becoming the Employment Rights Act 2025.

The Act introduces wide-ranging reforms.

Employers should be familiar with upcoming changes and taking steps to prepare for the changes.This article highlights some of the most significant changes expected in the coming months.

Unfair Dismissal The period of continuous employment required to claim unfair dismissal will reduce from two years to six months.The change will happen in January 2027.The current cap on compensation for unfair dismissal will also be abolished, with that change also likely to occur in 2027, making such claims potentially more expensive and difficult to settle.

Employers should review procedures in relation to recruitment and consider their approach to probationary periods, so that decisions about suitability of an employee are made at an early stage and properly documented.

Increases to the Minimum Wage From April 2026, the National Minimum Wage will rise to £10.85 for 18 - 20-year-olds and £8 for 16 17-year-olds and apprentices.The National Living Wage for those over 21 will increase to £12.71.

Whilst many employers will already provide for enhanced company sick pay schemes, all employers should consider reviewing policies on sickness absence.Employers may also want to consider reviewing their approach to absence management to ensure that levels of short term absences do not rise.

Paternity and Parental Leave From April 2026, employees will be entitled to paternity and parental leave from day one of employment. Employers should update policies to incorporate these new entitlements.

Line managers should receive training on the new entitlements to ensure that requests are handled consistently and in compliance with the new rules.

Harassment From April 2026, sexual harassment will become a “qualifying disclosure” under whistleblowing law, giving workers who report it protection from detriment and unfair dismissal. From October 2026, employers will be liable for third party harassment unless they took all reasonable steps to prevent it.The current duty to take reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment will also be extended to require all reasonable steps.

New rules making provisions in settlement agreements which prevent employees from reporting workplace harassment or discrimination void and unenforceable, are expected to come into force from October.

Employers should update their whistleblowing and harassment policies and train staff on the requirements.

Statutory Sick Pay Reform (SSP)

Collective Redundancy

From April 2026, employees will be entitled to SSP from their first day of absence. In addition, employees are no longer required to meet a minimum income level to qualify for SSP.

April 2026: The maximum penalty for failing to consult increases from 90 to 180 days’ pay per employee and guidance for collective redundancy consultation will be issued.

2027: A new trigger will require employers to count proposed redundancies across the entire business (not just one site) to meet the threshold for collective consultation.

This change will make it much easier to trigger collective consultation, particularly for multi-location employers. Employers will need to keep careful records of redundancies across the business to avoid inadvertently failing to comply with their obligations.

Fire & Rehire Significant limits on an employer’s ability to change employment terms will be introduced in October 2026.A dismissal will be automatically unfair if the reason is the employee does not agree to vary terms certain matters including pay, working hours, pension, shift time and length and time off.

Employers who plan on making contractual changes may want to start this process soon, ahead of the new rules coming into force.

Zero Hour Contracts Employers will be required to offer “guaranteedhours contracts” after a specified reference period, based on the actual hours worked during that time. Employers will be obliged to give reasonable notice if shifts are cancelled or changed.These measures are expected to take effect in 2027. Employers who rely on a casual workforce should consider an audit to highlight how these changes may affect the business, and how they can be managed cost effectively.

Summary Employers still have time to prepare for the changes. Taking proactive steps now will mean that employers can navigate the changes coming in 2026 and 2027 smoothly.

Introducing Anthony Downs Anthony Downs is a seasoned estate and development professional with over three decades of experience in estate management, planning and legacy development.

During more than 25 years at Gascoyne Estates, including his role as Estate Director of the historically significant Hatfield Park Estate, he led strategic initiatives that secured allocations for around 4,000 homes and 500,000 square feet of employment space, supported by influential pattern books, design codes and discussion papers. Formally trained as a building surveyor with a focus on conservation, design and placemaking, he is known for balancing heritage with progress to deliver projects that are both commercially viable and culturally sensitive. Anthony later founded Placewell Advisory and continues to shape national policy through his work with the CLA’s National Policy Committee and as a nonexecutive director at Gascoyne Estates, with his contribution to the built environment recognised by a King’s Foundation Award.

Introducing Patrick Milnes Patrick has been working in the employment sector since 2015, beginning his career as a recruitment consultant in the finance tech sector for Hays recruitment. He joined the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) in 2018, initially as a legal adviser, before moving into policy and campaigns, focusing on employment rights, skills and compliance. Patrick moved to Head of Policy for People and Work at the British Chambers of Commerce and is now leading the BCC’s work on both skills, policy and wider employment-related issues.

Lorna became Deputy Agent for South East and East Anglia in February 2021. She joined the Bank of England in 1990 and has worked in a number of data and analytical teams. More recently Lorna worked in the People and Culture Directorate supporting the development of staffing policies, business change and Covid recovery planning. She was also the Deputy Agent for Greater London between 2011-2013. Lorna has a degree in economics and statistics and a Postgraduate CIPD Certificate in Leadership and Management.

We also will briefly hear from Ganesh Gnanamoorthy, Director of Planning and Place at Broxbourne Borough Council, regarding economic development within Hertfordshire. Ganesh is a town planner by profession and has worked across a number of local authorities in London, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Surrey and Essex. Having worked on a diverse range of schemes, he has gathered a wealth of experience in fields far broader than just planning and has brought these to his current role.

Chamber is ‘a powerful platform for collaboration’ Professor Anthony Woodman, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Anthony joined the University of Hertfordshire on 1 September 2025 as its fourth Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive.

Having graduated from Sunderland Polytechnic in 1986, Anthony gained an MSc in Experimental Pathology & Toxicology in 1987 and a PhD in 1993, both from the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, University of London.

3. What are the biggest challenges affecting your organisation, and how can the Chamber help?

He was Professor of Translational Medicine at Cranfield University until 2007, and more recently Provost at the University of West London. His research in molecular oncology and particularly the role of biomarkers as diagnostic and prognostic tools has been undertaken in collaboration with a number of international pharmaceutical companies.

The University of Hertfordshire joined the Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce several years ago to strengthen our long-standing commitment to supporting the regional economy and working collaboratively with businesses across the county. As one of Hertfordshire’s largest employers and a key anchor institution, it was important for us to be part of a network that actively champions local enterprise, skills development and economic growth.

Joining the Chamber enabled us to deepen our engagement with employers of all sizes, align more closely with regional priorities and ensure that our education, research and skills provision continue to meet the evolving needs of Hertfordshire’s business community.

2. How has being a Patron of the Chamber helped your organisation?

Being a Patron of the Chamber has significantly strengthened our connections with senior business leaders, policymakers and key stakeholders across Hertfordshire. Through Chamber events, forums and networking opportunities, we have been able to engage in meaningful dialogue with employers, better understand local business challenges and co-create solutions around skills, workforce development and innovation.

Like many organisations, the University faces challenges linked to a constantly shifting political landscape, economic uncertainty, rapid technological change and the need to ensure a future-ready workforce. There is also increasing pressure to respond quickly to employer demand while navigating a complex regulatory and funding landscape.

The Chamber plays a vital role in helping to address these challenges by acting as a conduit between business, education and policy. Through insight-sharing, employer engagement and advocacy, the Chamber helps us stay closely connected to the needs of local industry and supports collaboration that leads to practical, impactful solutions.

4. What advice would you give to new Chamber members?

My advice to new members would be to actively engage.

Attend events, participate in discussions and make the most of the opportunities to connect with other businesses and organisations. The real value of Chamber membership comes from building relationships, sharing experiences and contributing to the collective voice of the local business community.

Approached in this way, the Chamber is not just a networking organisation, but a powerful platform for collaboration, learning and growth.

5. What are your plans for future growth, and what is your vision for 2026 and beyond?

Looking ahead, the University of Hertfordshire is focused on continued growth in areas that directly support regional and national priorities. This includes expanding our employer-aligned education and apprenticeship provision, strengthening partnerships with businesses and investing in innovation, digital capability, and leadership development.

Our vision for 2026 and beyond is to further cement our position as a university deeply embedded in the economic and social fabric of Hertfordshire, producing highly skilled graduates, supporting businesses to grow and innovate, and contributing to a resilient, inclusive and sustainable regional economy. Tuesday 10 February: Cutting Through the Complexities: An Information Evening for Students & Parents (In-Person, University of Hertfordshire, Forum Theatre) Recognising the increasing demand for alternative routes to higher education, this in-person information evening is designed for students exploring post-A-level options and parents seeking clarity on how degree apprenticeships work.

Attendees will meet programme leaders, employer partners, and current apprentices, gaining practical understanding of entry requirements, the application process, and what day-to-day life on a degree apprenticeship looks like. For many families, this event is a turning point in exploring a route that combines academic achievement with paid, real-world experience.

Thursday 12 February: Insight to Impact: Powering the Future Healthcare Workforce (In-Person, University of Hertfordshire, Spectra Building) This sector-leading event brings together healthcare employers to explore how innovation, partnership, and education can shape the workforce of tomorrow.

Hosted in the University’s new £100m Spectra building, attendees will enjoy guided tours of state-of-the-art simulation suites, VR labs, and clinical training environments, as well as demonstrations of how digital technologies and AI are transforming healthcare education.

Building a no-nonsense agency for a new era of leadership Laura Pearce didn’t set out to build a ‘typical’ agency. In fact, much of her career has been defined by doing the opposite Founder and Managing Director of Strand, formerly Strand PR, Laura Pearce launched the business in her early twenties with little more than determination, a sharp instinct for storytelling and a belief that communications should deliver real results, not just promises. Thirteen years on, Strand has grown into a full-service marketing agency working with ambitious organisations across finance, education, professional services and beyond. But for Laura, the real success of the business has always come down to one thing: people.

“I’ve never wanted to build a business where I’m the smartest person in the room,” she says. “Strand works because we have people here who are better than me at what they do and I trust them to lead.”

That belief has shaped every stage of the agency’s growth. From the outset, Laura focused on surrounding herself with people who challenged her thinking, brought deep expertise and cared about the quality of the work. Growth has been organic, driven by long-term relationships rather than aggressive expansion, and shaped around having the right team in place.

“The agency world can be noisy,” Laura says. “There’s a lot of jargon, a lot of over-promising, and not always enough delivery.

From day one, I wanted Strand to be different – fast, honest and genuinely useful to the people we work with.”

That ethos has become Strand’s calling card. Known for its straight-talking approach, deep client relationships and ability to move quickly without cutting corners, the agency has built partnerships that often last for years. Laura believes that consistency, not hype, is what earns trust.

As Strand evolved, so did its role. What began as a PR agency increasingly became something broader: a strategic partner supporting leadership teams through growth, reputation management, digital change and moments of pressure.

“The reality was that the name no longer reflected the work,” Laura explains. “PR is still a critical part of what we do, but it’s not the whole story. We’re supporting businesses at board level, shaping strategy, building visibility and helping them make confident decisions.”

That shift led to Strand’s recent rebrand, a move from Strand PR to simply Strand. It was not a cosmetic exercise, but a deliberate step that reflected a business coming into its own.

“The rebrand wasn’t about changing who we are,” she says.

“It was about being honest about who we’d already become and confident enough to say it out loud.”

For Laura, that confidence also comes from clarity about how she leads. She is direct, sets high standards and avoids hierarchy for its own sake, but places equal importance on wellbeing and development. Strand offers mental health days, flexible working and commissions an annual third-party wellbeing audit to hold itself accountable.

“You can’t expect people to perform at a high level if they’re running on empty,” she says. “Wellbeing isn’t a perk. It’s a responsibility.”

Backing people to grow is equally important. As the business scales, Laura is focused on creating opportunities for progression and ownership within the team.

That people-first mindset extends beyond Strand. Laura is actively involved in mentoring, charity work and community initiatives, using her experience to support others building businesses of their own. Having benefited from advice early in her career, she is clear about the importance of paying that forward.

As Strand enters its next chapter, the ambition is measured rather than flashy.

“Growth only works if it’s sustainable,” Laura says. “For our clients, for our team and for us as a business. We’re building something for the long term and we’re doing it properly.”

New wheels pave the way for new possibilities A healthcare company has joined forces with a sports foundation and a former GB athlete to support children in the UK living with disabilities.

Viatris UK, part of the global healthcare company Viatris Inc., has partnered with the Herts Disability Sports Foundation (HDSF) and former GB athlete Ella Beaumont to construct and assemble sports wheelchairs for children and young people with disabilities.

According to Whizz Kidz, the UK’s leading charity for young wheelchair users, more than 1,000 children are currently waiting for the right wheelchair or mobility equipment.

As a leading volume supplier of medicines in the UK, Viatris is using its European philanthropic programme, #BuildingHealthierCommunities, to help bring practical and lasting support to children and their families.

During the build day, Viatris employees worked alongside representatives from HDSF, who shared their lived experiences and expertise while helping assemble the wheelchairs. The initiative not only provided essential mobility aids but also promoted understanding of the daily challenges people with disabilities face when accessing and participating in sports.

Melissa Fisher, Country Manager for Viatris United Kingdom explained: “Our Building Healthier Communities initiative goes beyond building sports wheelchairs – it’s about creating opportunity and enabling access to movement.

“We’re proud that our employees are contributing their time and energy to make a tangible difference and we are grateful to Herts Disability Sports Foundation and Ella Beaumont for partnering with us to bring this initiative to life.”

The newly assembled sports wheelchairs will be distributed to charities and individuals across the UK, many of whom face significant barriers to mobility and limited access to assistive technologies. For recipients, the chairs represent more than physical support – they offer freedom of movement, access to sport and the chance to participate in inclusive activities that build confidence, wellbeing and community.

Ros Cramp, Charity Director at HDSF, said: “We believe access to sport changes lives – it builds confidence, community and independence. Partnering with Viatris allows us to reach even more young people and families who too often miss out. These sports wheelchairs aren’t just equipment, they’re enablers of inclusion.”

Ella Beaumont, personal trainer at Stoke Mandeville Stadium, the birthplace of the Paralympic movement and herself a former GB athlete, said: “As someone who relies on a sports wheelchair, I know how transformative the right equipment can be. It’s not just about taking part – it’s about unlocking potential, chasing goals and experiencing the pure joy of sport.

“The right chair gives you the freedom to push beyond limits and the confidence to believe in what’s possible. Seeing so many people come together to build sports wheelchairs is a powerful reminder of how access can spark opportunity, ambition, and dreams.”

Viatris’ #BuildingHealthierCommunities initiative engages employees across Europe, together with healthcare partners, in social and environmental projects that create meaningful impact in local communities. Activities range from volunteering to fundraising, all aimed at strengthening communities and improving lives.

In 2025 more than 50 events took place across Europe involving over 1,700 colleagues who volunteered more than 4,800 hours to support local causes.

PROPERTY TRANSACTIONS AND AML COMPLIANCE

When you instruct a lawyer to handle a property transaction for you, you should expect them to require certain information and documentation from you at the outset for the purposes of compliance with the Anti-Money Laundering (AML) legislation. This legislation applies to work carried out in ‘the regulated sector’, which includes property transactions, and compliance is mandatory – the strict rules imposed are designed to stop criminals using professional services to launder money or finance terrorism, and to maintain professional standards.

Client Due Diligence (CDD)

All firms operating in the regulated sector are required to undertake CDD on their clients and matters. This is one of the key controls to protect a firm against money laundering and terrorism financing risks. CDD should be undertaken ‘as early as possible’, so you should expect this to be a primary focus at the outset of a new matter as your transaction may otherwise be delayed.

What is required for CDD will differ depending on the circumstances, but fundamentally will include: • Identifying and verifying the identity of the client(s) on the basis of documents which meet the required criteria – this may include using a digital verification system • Identification of the client’s ownership and control structures where the client is not a private individual, and verifying the identities of the ultimate beneficial owners • Establishing whether any of the clients is a Politically Exposed Person (PEP), or subject to sanctions • Ensuring that CDD documentation is kept up to date, given that the AML regulations require firms to conduct ‘ongoing monitoring’

Source of funds and wealth (SOF & SOW)

Your lawyer will need a clear understanding of both SOF for the transaction and your SOW, to comply with the AML regulations. What is required will depend on the circumstances – your lawyer must adopt a risk-based approach. Again, timing is important – and note that if the SOF changes at a late stage you should understand that this may cause a delay in progressing your transaction due to the additional checks that your lawyer will then need to undertake.

Evidence of SOF and SOW will depend on the facts but might include: • Copies of payslips, annual accounts or tax returns • Bank statements • Loan documents • Details of inheritance • Copies of related sale documents, if funds are derived from a sale of property, shares or other assets It is important to understand that compliance with these AML requirements protects both firms and their clients, and is a fundamental part of preventing economic crime. It is also mandatory, so it is in the interests of all involved that AML compliance is dealt with promptly and thoroughly to ensure that your property transaction can proceed safely and without delay.

World Class Economy Hertfordshire’s reputation as a world class economic centre has continued to grow. Throughout 2025, the county’s leaders have championed Hertfordshire on a national and global stage.

In November 2025, at the inaugural UK Screen Investment Summit, industry leaders highlighted the need for deeper regional and cross sectoral partnerships to maximise the creative sector’s economic impact. This aligns with Hertfordshire’s ambition to strengthen its position at the heart of the UK’s screen and creative industries.

Another major milestone in 2025 was the development of Hertfordshire’s new Economic Strategy, which sets out a bold vision for the county to become the UK’s innovation heartland by 2035. Focused on productivity, sustainability and inclusion, the strategy brings together near‑term action with long‑term growth and will form the foundation of the forthcoming Local Growth Plan, set to launch in Westminster in March 2026.

Transport for Hertfordshire

In 2025, we made strong progress towards delivering the right homes - including increasing the provision of social, affordable, and specialist homes - in the right locations with the infrastructure needed to support Hertfordshire’s socio-economic prosperity.

Driven by a shared mission to deliver a safe and integrated transport system which unlocks growth, work is now underway to develop a new statutory Local Transport Plan for Hertfordshire.

The county built a gross total of 5,035 new homes in the period 1 April 2024 – 31 March 2025, of which 22% were affordable. This is the second highest rate that has been achieved in the last 25 years. There are also 39,100 homes with planning permission to be built over coming years.

Most recently, Digital Hertfordshire launched the Digital Help Finder, developed in partnership with Digital Essex. This new online tool supports individuals who need help getting online and will strengthen digital inclusion across the region.

We developed a pipeline of potential housing sites and a tool to engage Homes England on funding for social and affordable homes. There are about 400 sites on this list, capable of delivering around 97,000 homes over the coming years, which is the cumulative total of Local Plan allocations and other expected sites.

We have also contributed to the Healthy & Safe Places Framework, embedding health and wellbeing principles into future Local Plans, and supported districts in progressing Joint Strategic Plans to inform the Strategic Development Strategy.

Looking ahead, we are refreshing the Infrastructure Prospectus to set out long-term infrastructure requirements and funding gaps, with publication expected in Spring 2026.

District councils are also exploring AI planning tools to streamline validation processes, and the Quality Development Charter will align with the Future Homes Standard to ensure higher sustainability standards.

At December’s HIDB meeting, the full scale of Hertfordshire’s housing crisis was confronted.

The message was clear: the need is urgent, and meeting it will require strong, coordinated action.

Yet the meeting also offered real optimism, spotlighting the talent, creativity and shared commitment across the county as partners work to unlock new homes and deliver better futures for residents.

Established in 2021, the HIDB brings together both the public and private sector from across Hertfordshire, giving over 80 members a seat at the table to understand and influence the future of the county.

Hertfordshire’s young talent celebrated on national stage Teenage apprentice celebrates with his mum at Houses of Parliament as he collects national award Community pride was on full display as an apprentice electrician from Hertfordshire was honoured at the 2025 Young Builder of the Year Awards Nineteen-year-old Kyran O’Dowd, who is completing Hart Learning and Development’s installation/maintenance electrician apprenticeship at North Hertfordshire College’s Engineering and Construction Campus in Stevenage, received a Commended Young Builder of the Year 2025 award.

The recognition came with a certificate and £400 prize, but for Kyran, the true reward was something far more personal.

Kyran was nominated by his placement employer, TP&N Electrical, who highlighted not only his growing technical skill, but also the determination he has shown in navigating challenges linked to his ADHD. Kyran said: “It’s nice to know that I’m actually all right at my job! After receiving this award, I have more confidence in my skills and my mum’s told me to put it on my CV. “I couldn’t have done this without the continued support of everyone at TP&N Electrical and my tutors at Hart Learning and Development.”

The ceremony took place in the Houses of Parliament, where Sir John Hayes MP opened the event before the 23 finalists and their guests. Kyran attended with his mum, his best friend Keaton and Cathy Spooner, Office Manager at TP&N Electrical.

Cathy said: “Kyran has worked hard to develop his skills and never let obstacles stand in his way. Overcoming challenges along the journey has only made this achievement more meaningful – a real testament to his character.”

Lorna McCallum, Executive Director of Apprenticeships at Hart Learning and Development, said: “I’m incredibly proud that Kyran’s hard work and dedication have been recognised on a national stage. It’s a testament to the outstanding support from his tutors and the staff at Hart Learning and Development.

Approximately 95 per cent of FB Chain’s employees live within 12 miles of its site and many key suppliers are just as close. Long-standing partners include Pinnacle Solutions, Peter Wright Electrical, Essential Results and Webby Tech, all of which have worked with the company for more than a decade.

For its highly automated leaf-chain anchor production in Letchworth, FB Chain’s main input is steel. With the correct grades no longer manufactured in Hertfordshire or the wider UK, the company must source this material from abroad. Their steel currently comes from Italy and is produced in a modern EAF furnace, resulting in low-carbon steel.

Another important local partnership is with Aztek Logistics, which receives and distributes more than 5,000 pallets a year on FB Chain’s behalf. The first and last legs of each journey are completed using an electric truck. Their proximity and close relationship allow Aztek to respond rapidly to shifting customer requirements.

When refurbishing their changing rooms and washrooms, FB Chain turned to fellow Chamber member Conamar Building Services, without even seeking an alternative quote. The project was delivered on time, within budget and with minimal disruption to operations.

Commercial Landlords and Tenants Beware: Stricter EPC Rules are Coming If you are a landlord or tenant of a commercial building, be aware that the UK Government is proposing to make significant changes to Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) requirements to enforce stricter Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES) for commercial buildings from 2028 and 2030.

CURRENT EPC RULES At present, all commercial properties in England and Wales must have an EPC rating of E or above to be legally let (including those already let). Properties rated F or G cannot be let or continue to be let unless a valid exemption is registered with the PRS Exemptions Register.

EXEMPTIONS Certain exemptions can be registered, for example, where improvements would cost more than the energy savings over seven years, all cost-effective works have been done but the rating is still unachievable, consent from a third party cannot be obtained, or works would devalue the property by over 5%.

WHY THIS MATTERS Non-compliance could prevent landlords from legally letting properties and result in fines of up to £150,000. Poor energy ratings can reduce rental income, increase vacancy periods, and diminish the value of a property.

CHANGES COMING IN 2028 AND 2030

Tenants may also face disruption from improvement works or need to relocate if upgrades are not undertaken. Some lease provisions may require tenants to cooperate with energy efficiency improvements.

The Government has yet to announce its final decision on changes to MEES for commercial buildings. However, proposals indicate:

LANDLORDS

• By April 2028: Let commercial buildings must meet a minimum EPC rating of C or hold a registered PRS exemption certificate.

• Check your current EPC status: You can verify this on the official EPC register at https://www.gov.uk/find-energy-certificate.

• By April 2030: Let commercial buildings must meet a minimum EPC rating of B or hold a registered PRS exemption certificate.

• EPC certificate validity is to be shortened from the current 10 years. Exact timeframe to be confirmed.

• EPC expiry will automatically trigger the requirement to obtain a new EPC. • All listed buildings will be required to have an EPC. Until legislation is finalised, these changes remain proposals only. Landlords and tenants of commercial buildings should monitor the government website for

Include clauses that restrict tenant alterations likely to negatively affect EPC ratings, allocate upgrade costs, or a proportion of them to the tenant for energy efficiency improvements, and control who obtains EPC certificates to prevent conflicting ratings.

• Explore funding and incentives: Check for any government offered grants, loans and tax allowances to support energy efficiency projects.

TENANTS • Understand your lease obligations: Review clauses on energy performance, alterations, and service charges. Some leases may require cooperation with landlord upgrades or prohibit changes that would harm the EPC rating.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO PREPARE

• Obtain an up-to-date EPC report: This will identify your building’s current energy rating and highlight cost effective improvements.

Engage an accredited commercial energy assessor if required.

• Engage with your landlord early: If your building has a low EPC rating, discuss with your landlord any upgrade plans to prepare for disruptions if necessary. Beware of getting locked into leases in future where landlords seek variations to recover upgrade costs.

• Assess fit-out impacts: Tenant alterations can significantly influence a building’s EPC rating. Discuss your alteration plans with your landlord to avoid non-compliance risks.

• Plan and budget early: Upgrading close to deadlines risks contractor shortages, supply chain constraints and higher costs.

Early staged improvements can be more manageable and effective.

• Prioritise impactful upgrades: Focus on improvements that deliver the greatest EPC rating increase, such as enhanced insulation, LED lighting, efficient heating systems, and building management systems.

• Consider wider implications: Occupying an inefficient building may affect operating costs and sustainability commitments of the business, especially for larger tenants or occupiers under regulatory or market pressure.

Cult restaurant set to spice up St Albans St Albans is about to get a whole lot tastier as a fried-chicken brand has completed the letting of a prominent retail unit in the city thanks to a commercial property consultancy.

In a move secured by Kirkby Diamond, cult favourite Chicken George is set to open its first restaurant in the city, taking over the 2,586 square foot former Pizza Hut unit at the Victoria Street entrance to the Maltings Shopping Centre on a longterm lease.

Kirkby Diamond’s Hugo Harding said: “We are delighted to have completed the letting of this unit to Chicken George.

Their arrival will attract new visitors to both the centre and St Albans more broadly, adding to the area’s vibrant food scene.

Celebrating 30 years of music, community and choirs A Hertfordshire choral charity is preparing to celebrate a major milestone, marking three decades of supporting local musical life with a flagship dinner and concert in March 2026.

St Albans Cathedral Music Trust, the independent charity that funds and champions music at the cathedral, will host its 30th anniversary celebrations on Thursday 12 March, at Hatfield House. The evening begins with a performance by the cathedral choir at St Etheldreda’s Church, followed by a drinks reception and black-tie dinner at the Old Palace.

St Albans Cathedral has been home to distinguished musicmaking for more than a thousand years, with renowned choirs, a Harrison & Harrison organ and a busy calendar of concerts and musical events. Unlike many UK cathedrals, it has no historical endowment to support its music, making the Trust’s role vital in sustaining its programmes.

Acclaimed composer and conductor John Rutter has praised the cathedral’s musical tradition. He said: “Music has always been at the heart of the worship and mission of this historic, high-energy cathedral – rich in heritage and tradition.

“The children and young people of the cathedral choirs are part of its future, and indeed the future of music. As the cathedral music team reaches out more widely into the community with its visionary Excellence for Everyone programme, it deserves our wholehearted support. We, the adults, have to put the fuel in the tank so the young people can soar into the future.”

BCC appoints new Director of Policy and Insights New Director brings two decades’ experience showcasing skills, training and recruitment into her new role

British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has appointed Kate Shoesmith as its new Director of Policy and Insights. She will lead a 10-strong team of policy and research experts.

Kate has joined the BCC from the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC). It is the professional membership body for the UK recruitment industry, where she has been the Deputy CEO for five years.

She started with the organisation in March 2013 and has worked in a variety of roles, including Head of Policy & Public Affairs, Head of Member Engagement and Director of Sales & Marketing.

Before joining REC, she worked at City & Guilds and the Federation of Awarding Bodies. She was also a Vice President of the World Employment Confederation (Europe) and a non-executive board member for the Recruitment Industry Disability Initiative.

Her career means she has spent more than a decade representing the views of business to government, and over 20 years campaigning on key issues holding back the UK economy and society.

She replaces Alex Veitch who left the BCC in August to become CEO of the Confederation of Paper Industries.

Commenting on her appointment, Kate said: “Businesses are the engine of growth in the UK economy, but they cannot fire on all cylinders if costs, regulations and bureaucracy rob them of impetus.

“Supporting firms should be fundamental to the Government’s mission, and I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in and carrying firms’ views and insights into the heart of government.

Funding opportunity returns to support Watford’s community groups Community organisations across Watford are being encouraged to apply for funding to bring new ideas to life. The grant programme offers up to £3,000 for projects that support residents, strengthen neighbourhoods and contribute to a greener, more vibrant community.

Watford Borough Council has opened the Mayor’s Small Grant Fund for the 2026/27 round and it will close on February 13, 2026.

All applications must demonstrate clear benefits for Watford residents and align with at least one of the council’s priorities: a greener, brighter future; an inspiring and creative town; or a diverse, happy and healthy community.

In previous years, the fund has helped many local groups deliver meaningful projects that strengthen neighbourhoods and improve the wellbeing of residents. Last year, 32 projects were supported, enabling organisations to enhance local facilities, expand community programmes and introduce activities that bring people together.

One example includes St Mary’s Watford, which received funding to support ongoing improvements to the site.

This included helping establish a new Friends of St Mary’s Green Space group, created to involve local people who live, work and visit the area in caring for and enjoying this important community space.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “Watford’s voluntary and community groups play a vital role in supporting our residents and enriching life in our town.

The Mayor’s Small Grant Fund is an important way for us to back their efforts and help bring community-led ideas to life.

I’m always inspired by the creativity and dedication shown by local organisations and I’m looking forward to seeing the new proposals put forward this year.”

The council welcomes interest from charities, voluntary groups, CICs, informal community organisations and others committed to improving life for local people. Projects that promote wellbeing, creativity, sustainability or community connection will be particularly encouraged.

Law firm invests £50,000 in early education to help prevent domestic abuse A Hertfordshire-based law firm has committed £50,000 to fund 20 educational workshops aimed at equipping young people with the tools to recognise and challenge unhealthy behaviours in relationships.

HAB Law has joined forces with Tender, an arts and education charity focused on preventing domestic abuse and sexual violence, and Dignify, a One YMCA programme dedicated to helping children build healthy relationships free from the influence of pornography and sexual objectification.

The workshops, which will be provided to secondary schools across the region, will help young people and teachers identify early signs of coercive and controlling behaviour, while reinforcing the values of dignity, respect and positive relationships.

Imtiaz Choudry, Director of HAB Law, said: “At HAB Law, we see first-hand the lifelong impact coercive control can have.

We want to repurpose our profit into prevention. It’s our way of turning awareness into action and building a safer future for the next generation.”

The collaboration was officially launched at an event that brought together educators, community leaders and safeguarding professionals to mark this important investment in prevention through education.

Through the joint initiative, Tender will deliver 10 arts-based workshops designed to help children and young people understand healthy and unhealthy behaviours, using creative activities and discussion-led learning.

Dignify will deliver a further 10 workshops focused on building self-worth and resilience, helping young people to understand

the impact of pornography and sexual objectification and to form healthy, respectful relationships rooted in dignity and empathy.

By combining Tender’s expertise in abuse prevention, Dignify’s community-driven education on dignity and respect and HAB Law’s legal insight and leadership, the partnership aims to make Hertfordshire a model for how early education can play a vital role in preventing domestic abuse and promoting relationship wellbeing.

Susie McDonald, CEO of Tender, said: “Preventing domestic abuse must start as early as possible and that means educating children and young people. With creativity and open discussion, young people gain practical skills to confidently recognise and challenge abusive behaviours. Partnering with HAB Law means we can deliver our healthy relationship programmes in more schools, helping to empower more young people with these critical life skills.”

This initiative marks what the partners hope will be just the first step in ensuring every school has access to this kind of preventative education. By demonstrating the impact of these first 20 workshops, the organisations aim to inspire local businesses, community groups and individuals to come together and help fund more sessions across Hertfordshire, so every young person can benefit from learning what healthy, respectful relationships look like.

Rising legal star takes on co-leadership role in top family law team A highly regarded legal professional has been appointed to a senior leadership role within a leading law firm, marking another milestone in his distinguished career.

Kiran Beeharry, Partner at St Albans and London-based law firm SA Law, has been named Joint Head of Family Law, a move that reflects his growing influence and leadership within the firm.

AI is also reshaping the hiring process, bringing speed and efficiency, but raising concerns around candidate authenticity, bias and transparency.
