It has been a privilege to be part of such a vibrant and supportive business community.

welcome As we move into spring, it feels like a fitting moment to reflect on the strength of our Chamber community and the power of coming together to share ideas, support one another and celebrate success.

Our recent Women in Leadership Conference was a perfect example of that spirit. More than 200 women from across Hertfordshire gathered to share their stories, learn from one another and build connections that will last well beyond the day itself. The energy in the room was extraordinary and a reminder of just how powerful supportive networks can be.

Events like this do not happen without the commitment of many people behind the scenes. I would like to thank our speakers, sponsors and the Chamber team who worked so hard to make the conference such a memorable and inspiring occasion.

Most importantly, thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to such an open, thoughtful and uplifting day.

This edition of Inspire will be my last as Chief Executive of Herts Chamber of Commerce. As I prepare to step down, I would like to take the opportunity to thank our members, partners, stakeholders and the Chamber team for their support, collaboration and friendship over the years. It has been a privilege to be part of such a vibrant and supportive business community.

How to Protect Value in an M&A Transaction Graeme Fox Senior Tax Manager Email: graeme.fox@hhllp.co.uk Mergers and acquisitions can be transformative moments in a business’s journey, offering opportunities for growth, diversification, or even a well-timed exit.

For many business owners, the prospect is exciting but can also feel daunting. Success in these transactions goes far beyond simply agreeing on a price; it requires careful planning, clear objectives, and attention to the financial, legal and human sides of the business.

The first step for any business owner considering a merger or acquisition is to be clear about the purpose. Are you looking to expand into new markets, acquire innovative technologies, strengthen your customer base, or create an exit plan? Understanding your strategic goals will guide the process, shape negotiations, and ensure that any deal aligns with your long-term vision. Without this clarity, it’s easy to get caught up in external pressures or offers that don’t truly benefit yourself and/or the business.

Accurate, up-to-date financial records are essential, not only for preparing a valuation, but for building credibility with potential buyers or partners. Business owners should have a clear picture of assets, liabilities, and key performance drivers, while recognising that valuation is more than just the numbers. Future earning potential, client relationships, brand strength, and intellectual property all play a role in determining what a business is truly worth.

Tax planning is also a significant factor.

Structuring a transaction in the most efficient way can have a major impact on the proceeds an owner ultimately receives, or tax relief available to a buyer. Understanding capital gains liabilities, available reliefs, and incentives is essential for maximising the financial outcome.

Is the deal to be a sale of trade and assets, or a business as a whole? Both come with differing tax outcomes for buyer and seller, with buyers preferring trade deals, with seller desire share sales.

The way the consideration of any deal is put together can be simple or complex and again come with numerous tax issues. Will the offer be only in cash? Or would it be in some other form, such as shares or loan notes? Will any amount be deferred, payable in instalments, or contingent on future events? All these options could alter the amount and timing of tax due, and sellers need to be aware of the consequences to aid them in deciding.

We have seen badly crafted deals result in lost tax breaks, such as eligibility to Business Asset Disposal Relief, costing sellers large sums of the proceeds they thought were going into their pockets going to pay HMRC instead.

Culture is another often-overlooked factor.

Even the most financially attractive deal could stumble if the companies involved don’t share compatible values, management styles, or operational approaches. Early conversations about culture and integration can prevent disruptions and help ensure that employees, leaders, and customers can adapt smoothly to the new structure. In the same vein, communication is critical. Keeping staff informed, managing client expectations, and reassuring suppliers and other stakeholders are all necessary to maintain trust and stability throughout the process.

Legal and regulatory considerations cannot be underestimated. Thorough due diligence is key to identifying risks and will require advisors with an understanding of multiple tax disciplines. Working with experienced lawyers and accountants

ensures that potential pitfalls are identified and addressed early, reducing the risk of costly surprises. In one transaction, the employmentrelated securities return was submitted late.

Although no tax was due, the missed filing triggered penalties of several thousand pounds from HMRC, ultimately reducing the amount the buyer was willing to pay the seller. In other cases, though, early planning identified VAT issues early on, and allowed corrective action before a deal was implemented.

Timing and a solid negotiation strategy are also central to a successful transaction. Mergers and acquisitions are rarely quick or straightforward, and they often involve lengthy discussions, multiple rounds of negotiation, and sometimes the need to walk away if the deal doesn’t meet strategic or financial objectives. Patience, strategic communication, and the ability to stay focused on long-term goals are crucial traits for any business owner navigating this process.

For buyers, mergers and acquisitions should be viewed as a strategic step rather than a destination. A successful deal isn’t just about the immediate financial gain; it’s about strengthening the business, achieving strategic objectives, and setting the stage for sustainable growth.

For sellers, it provides an opportunity to crystalise a value for all the hard work that has been put in over the years. By combining clear purpose, robust financial preparation, cultural awareness, legal vigilance, and thoughtful communication, business owners can maximise the benefits of M&A while minimising the risks. Approached in this way, a merger or acquisition can be an opportunity to write an exciting new chapter in the life of a business, rather than a source of unexpected challenges.

Women leading the way across Hertfordshire From Olympic champion Sally Gunnell to inspiring local leaders, the Women in Leadership Conference brought together more than 200 delegates for a day of powerful stories, honest reflections and practical insights on confidence, resilience and collaboration Celebration. Inspiration. Collaboration.

The Herts Chamber’s sixth annual Women in Leadership Conference delivered all three, bringing together more than 200 women from across the county for a day of powerful stories, honest conversations and genuine connection.

Sharing the stage with Olympic gold medallist Sally Gunnell, the afternoon’s headline speaker, was a host of inspiring women who each brought their own remarkable journeys to the room.

This year’s International Women’s Day theme, Give to Gain, sparked lively discussion among delegates. One question in particular resonated with many in the audience: Haven’t women already given enough?

But whatever the debate around the theme, the conference itself was a celebration of the extraordinary women we work alongside every day and the networks of support that help each other grow and succeed.

One of the few men in attendance admitted the experience had been eye opening. Surrounded by a room full of women,

he said he was starting to understand what it might feel like to be a female in a male-dominated world.

The event opened with a welcome from Mary Sykes, the Chamber’s corporate relations lead, who thanked sponsors and patrons for their continued support before introducing Herts Chamber CEO Donna Schultz.

This year’s conference carried particular significance as it marked Donna’s final appearance at a major Chamber event before she steps down at the end of March.

In a passionate and at times emotional speech, she reflected on her seven-year journey with the Chamber, which began with an introduction from Emma Tarbox of Tate Recruitment.

“Leadership as a woman is not straightforward,” she told delegates. “And you don’t get everything right.”

She spoke candidly about the importance of the ‘village’ that supports us during difficult times and the responsibility leaders have to lift others up.

“Another woman’s success is not your competition,” she said.

“It’s something to celebrate.”

Sponsor addresses Emily Waddell, Head of Marketing and Business Development at Taylor Walton Solicitors delivered the first of the two headline sponsor addresses. She stated, “progress has never happened by accident” and emphasised that give to gain isn’t just a theme, “it’s a mindset”.

Drawing on her experience as a working mother, Emily encouraged women to work collaboratively rather than competitively. Her personal journey demonstrated that collaboration strengthens women: “Collaboration makes us stronger.” She argued that this approach is the key to paving the way for women to succeed: “Ambition then becomes normal, and not apologetic.”

Her inspiring address was followed by Dr Kamilia El Farra, Consultant Gynaecologist at Ramsay Health Care, who shared a deeply personal story. Growing up in Gaza, she knew from the age of four that she wanted to be a doctor (initially because she believed doctors drove ambulances), but the ambition never faded. She also dreamed of living in the UK among greenery.

Both dreams were realised, but only with dedication and support. Kamilia credited her success to her parents and the people around her: “I was given to all my life...I was helped by everybody.”

Her journey included overcoming scepticism from a male surgeon who had initially refused to work with women gynaecologists. Through perseverance, she not only earned his respect but turned him into an ally; by the end, they were “best friends”.

Kamilia’s story exemplified the power of belief: “I believed in myself”. Her trailblazing career contributed to a dramatic shift in gynaecology in the UK, where women now make up 80 per cent of the field, compared to just 15 per cent when she first began.

“Yes,” he replied confidently. “The Mayor of St Albans.”

During her year as High Sheriff, Annie attended 637 events and championed the work of The Hertfordshire Association for the Care and Rehabilitation of Offenders, often visiting prisoners as part of her role.

She also paid tribute to her 81-year-old tailor Geoffrey Golding, who has created the distinctive uniforms she has worn throughout her public service.

Closing her remarks, she thanked the audience for their energy, commitment and leadership.

Opening addresses

“Hertfordshire is full of incredible women,” she said.

Deputy Lieutenant Annie Brewster also returned to the conference, joking about her latest hat after previously attending in her Hertfordshire High Sheriff uniform.

Anna Darnell, General Manager at The Grove, the venue for the conference, overcame her personal nightmare of public speaking to talk about her experience in learning that women in leadership do not need to be louder or tougher, nor do they need to behave like their male counterparts.

Her lighthearted and warm but insightful reflections included her time in that role and her remarkable place in the county’s history as only the 14th woman to serve as Mayor of St Albans among the 469 people who have held the position.

Recalling one memorable moment while accompanying former Prime Minister Boris Johnson to the railway station, she spotted a mother and her young son watching excitedly nearby. When she called them over, the mother asked her son if he knew who it was.

“Being different makes you invisible or memorable – I chose to be memorable,” she said.

Breakout sessions She admitted she used to doubt herself constantly and would only speak when she was absolutely certain about what she wanted to say.

“If you’re thinking leadership means having it all figured out, that’s not my story.”

She learnt resilience and watched good and bad managers to help her carve her own path.

“You don’t have to know everything and that is OK. You just need to know enough to support the people around you.”

Keynote address Julie Creffield, Innovation Director at Broxbourne Enterprise Centres, delivered a personal and inspiring keynote, focusing on the growth of technology. Coming from a turbulent family background, Julie had to work hard to achieve success.

A female teacher’s early cruelty, she revealed, ultimately propelled her forward, giving her a “rocket” to prove herself.

Her fascination with technology from a young age became her platform: “Technology opened doors for me.”

Despite working with major brands such as Google, Disney, Virgin Media, Coca-Cola and Santander, Julie still hesitated to call herself ‘techy’. “Because that’s the narrative,” she stated, evoking the societal narratives that can limit women’s selfperception.

She highlighted Deloitte research showing a 15 per cent generative AI adoption gap in the UK, where 28 per cent of women adopt AI, compared to 43 per cent of men. She suggested that women may hesitate to use AI because they distrust easy solutions or feel conditioned to work harder than necessary.

Julie advocates thoughtful use of AI: “We should always be sceptical of this tech – but we can leverage it.” She illustrated this by using AI to lose 100lbs in a year, writing a book that made £10,000 and becoming a best-seller in a “tech bros”dominated category.

Her key message to the audience: in order to achieve, “we can’t wait for permission”.

Does Imposter Syndrome Steal your Spotlight?

The irony of a man leading an imposter syndrome session predominantly attended by women was not lost on David, who addressed it directly: “Who am I to lecture?”

Drawing on 20 years of coaching, David explained that impostor syndrome affects everyone, even men, and is not a reflection of skill or experience, but the persistent “feeling” of being a fraud. It often stems from thinking success is due to luck, timing or “fooling” others, rather than one’s own abilities.

Statistics show that 70 per cent of women experience impostor syndrome at some point in their careers, compared to 55 per cent of men. Also, 47 per cent of women report that these feelings intensify as their careers advance and 37 per cent of female business owners say self-doubt has held them back.

To combat these feelings, David and Catherine shared practical strategies, including tools designed to build confidence, clear communication and authentic connection. Interactive exercises encouraged participants to identify personal triggers and write down coping strategies.

The session turned a common challenge into a shared opportunity for growth, leaving attendees with practical ways to quiet the “little voice” of doubt and confidently step into their spotlight.

Jo Beazley, Strategy Manager, Step2Skills Hidden Strengths: Turning Differences into Advantages

Jo used her story of her ADHD late diagnosis to show the value of inclusivity in the workplace and to talk about the advantages to having neurodivergent employees.

Told at 49 that she had ADHD, she spoke openly about the anger she initially felt after years of procrastination, internal restlessness and the frustration at not being able to do things.

While the diagnosis provided clarity for her experiences, she still had to learn to understand herself.

Having an understanding boss in Chantal Lommel helped.

Chantal delivered the workshop alongside Jo, explaining the importance of trust in their working relationship; for Jo to be able to speak up when she was struggling and for Chantal to feel comfortable in delivering feedback.

Chantal spoke about the huge positives of employing Jo – her resilience, enthusiasm, drive to success and hyperfocus. Where previously Jo had internalised her struggles – through 14 different careers – for fear of being perceived as useless, she now felt able to discuss her challenges with the partnership they shared.

The women in the room were given ample opportunity to discuss and share their own experiences.

Kamilia El Farra, Consultant Gynaecologist, Ramsay Health Care Menopause and Perimenopause: Effects on your Life and your Work

Kamilia moved on from her opening speech to focus on how menopause and perimenopause affect your body and mind. Discussing HRT, its alternatives and common myths around testosterone, she also looked at the implications in the workplace, what to expect from your bosses and what is the law? Those attending the session were able to ask their own questions.

Laura Pearce, Founder and Managing Director, Strand Exploring the Confidence–Competence Gap

Laura’s breakout session focused on the confidencecompetence gap, the disconnect between the quality of work people deliver and how confidently that expertise is expressed in the room.

The session explored how this shows up in working life: softening strong opinions, over-explaining ideas, waiting until fully ready before stepping forward or allowing louder voices to dominate. Drawing on her background in strategic communications, Laura challenged attendees to think about how the principles used to sharpen corporate messaging could also be applied at a personal level.

The session clearly struck a chord. Writing on LinkedIn afterwards, Rebecca Taylor, Senior Planning Manager at Laxton Properties, said the discussion had inspired her to “better define my value, practice my elevator pitch and feel confident to politely disagree when needed”.

For Tiba Rao, Chief Innovation Officer at Soar Beyond, the session reinforced “something important: building knowledge and expertise is only part of the equation. Being able to signal and communicate confidence in that competence is equally critical”.

The practical element of the session, building a personal communications toolkit, gave attendees the chance to reflect on how they articulate their own value, evidence their strengths and show up with more clarity.

Joanna Brooker, Director, C2C Group Give to Gain – When Leadership Liberates People and Performance

Joanna’s insightful session challenged the delegates to consider a support/challenge matrix, designed to get the best out of your people.

She spoke passionately about how businesses often talk about having a people-first culture when in reality what employees are experiencing is anything but. When that happens, people stop leading.

Sally Gunnell OBE, Headline Speaker Working in a male-dominated world, she admitted that she had become ‘hard as nails’; at C2C she employs a different approach, one of support to help her team unlock their potential.

“Leadership isn’t easy, but give people the opportunity and they can thrive,” she said.

Delegates left with useful handouts to continue their journey to discover the type of leaders they think they are and how their team actually views them.

Naomi Haynes, Chartered Financial Planner, Naomi Haynes Financial Planning Your Money, Your Power: A 60-Minute Reset for Financial Confidence

Naomi Haynes guided participants through assessing their finances, including budgeting, debt repayment, savings strategies and pensions.

She highlighted gender-specific challenges: “Women live longer and have higher medical bills than men – pensions cannot support this.” She urged attendees to take practical steps now, from reviewing pension pots and maximising ISAs to building emergency funds.

As well as a useful questionnaire where the group had to rate themselves, she also advised that if you only do one thing, it should be one of these: •

Increase your pension by 1 per cent

Use this year’s ISA allowance

Move savings earning low rate of interest

Build (or top up) your emergency fund

Her overarching message was simple but powerful: “It’s never too late.”

Instant applause broke out as the video showing Sally’s 1992 Barcelona Olympics success played out on screen with a few delegates experiencing a rush of emotion as they relived the moment the farmer’s daughter struck gold.

The rerun of the famous race with Sally beating her close rival Sandra Farmer-Patrick in the 400m hurdles was even more poignant as those in the room had just listened to her journey to that moment.

Overcoming the doubt she felt about whether she was good enough resonated with many of the delegates who enjoyed her warm and authentic retelling of the story to become a champion not just at the Olympics, but also the Worlds, Europeans and the Commonwealth Games – still the only woman to hold all four major track titles at the same time.

Given that success, it was surprising to hear about the selfdoubt she had along the way, always thinking everyone else was better.

But she showed resilience through her setbacks and found there’s always a way, even if it takes having a trackside tantrum and throwing her spikes on the floor on the path to that realisation.

“Find a positive, put it behind you and move on,” was the advice she gave.

En route to Barcelona she built a team around her, including a sports psychologist who helped her understand that success is 70 per cent mental. He encouraged her to visualise winning – which she did every day.

“Allow yourself to have a vision,” she said. “Plan what to do if things go wrong so you’re prepared. Surround yourself with positive people. Find the ones who make you feel positive.

“People who excel in real life are the ones who ignore the negative voice in our heads. You have to find your own confidence.”

She admitted she remembered nothing of the Barcelona final as she put herself in the zone, having rehearsed the race so many times in her head. “It was mental,” she admitted.

“Believing what you’re capable of doing.”

Delegates were happy to ask Sally questions in the Q&A and she was equally happy to hang around to chat and have selfies.

No, later in 2027 (dates not confirmed) zero-hours contracts will be outlawed; there will be a duty to offer guaranteed hours. Collective redundancy rights are being enhanced as are flexible-working rights. Sexual harassment whistleblower rights will be strengthened.

The period of time for bringing unfair dismissal claims will be extended from three to six months (in force anytime from October 2026).

Non-disclosure agreements are also being banned in discrimination and harassment cases. Improved job security following pregnancy and other statutory leave will be granted.

What is a share buy-back?

A share buy-back is where a company purchases its own shares from an existing shareholder.

Following completion, the shares are typically cancelled, reducing the company’s issued share capital and increasing the percentage ownership held by the remaining shareholders.

Share buy-backs are governed by sections 690 to 708 of the Companies Act 2006 and are subject to strict rules on funding, approvals, documentation, timing and statutory filings.

Preparing for a share buy back: the essentials – Before proceeding, a number of key issues must be addressed at the outset to ensure the transaction runs smoothly.

Use of surplus company funds – Where a company has excess cash available, a buy-back can be an effective way of returning value to a departing shareholder. In some circumstances, a buy-back may be more tax-efficient than paying dividends, although this depends on the shareholder’s individual tax position and whether the relevant HMRC conditions are satisfied.

Retirement of a shareholder – A buy-back can provide a clean route for a founder or director to step back from the business without requiring the remaining shareholders to raise personal funds. It is often used alongside succession planning arrangements.

Turning the page for a new chapter

Donna Schultz reflects on seven years with the Chamber, the realities of leadership and the experiences that have shaped her final 18 months as CEO After seven years with Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce, CEO Donna Schultz is preparing to hand over the baton. It is a moment filled with mixed emotions. Sadness at leaving an organisation that has been such a defining part of her life, balanced with a quiet confidence that the time is right for a new chapter.

“I will miss the Chamber immensely,” she says. “But it feels like the right moment to move on. It’s not about wanting to leave, it’s about recognising when a chapter has come to a natural close.”

Donna joined the Chamber in 2019, stepping into a role that would quickly evolve. Like many working in business support, she experienced first-hand how dramatically the landscape changed during and after the pandemic.

Those years shaped much of the work that followed, as businesses emerged with new priorities, renewed confidence and, in some cases, real uncertainty.

“What I’ve seen over the years is confidence going up and down,” she explains. “After lockdown, a lot of people wanted to try something new, to set up on their own or rethink their careers. Through everything, what’s stayed consistent is the community spirit. People genuinely want to support each other.”

When Donna stepped into the CEO role in 2024, leading the Chamber in its centenary year, she faced a very different challenge. Leading an organisation she knew well, and a team including those who had once trained her, required a shift in mindset. “That was tough,” she admits. “You have to learn to be decisive, to lead and to accept that you won’t get everything right.

And you’re doing it all very visibly.”

During her time as CEO, Donna has focused on relevance and value. She has reshaped the events programme, reducing the number of traditional lunches, introducing more breakfasts and early-morning networking, and responding to feedback from members feeling the pressure of rising costs.

She also introduced Young Professionals events, specifically designed to reach those under 35 and create a space for the next generation of business leaders to connect and grow. Hertfordshire Horizons became another important addition, giving businesses a platform to discuss local challenges and opportunities openly and constructively.

“It’s about showing value for money and understanding that you can’t please everyone all the time,” she says.

Some of the Chamber’s standout moments during her leadership include the continued success of the Inspiring Herts Awards, which remain the Chamber’s biggest event of the year, and the rapid growth of the Women in Leadership Conference. “Every year it somehow gets bigger and better,” Donna says. “Watching businesses and individuals realise they belong in those spaces is incredibly rewarding.”

Alongside her professional responsibilities, Donna has navigated significant personal change, becoming a single parent and balancing family life with an intense leadership role. In 2025 she trained for and ran the London Marathon, raising £6,000 for Hertfordshire Community Foundation, a cause close to her heart. “You have to be organised, plan ahead and build your village,” she says. “But I’ve also learned how important it is to look after yourself. If you don’t, you’re no good to anyone.”

Reflecting on her time at the Chamber, Donna is clear about what has meant the most. She is proud of the team she has built and grateful for the support of the Board throughout her leadership. She also reflects on how fortunate she has been to meet so many incredible businesses and people across the county. “I feel very lucky to have met such inspiring individuals,” she says.

“I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported me along the way.”

As she looks ahead, Donna is excited about setting up her own consultancy, supporting international businesses entering the UK market, and creating a better work-life balance. “It’s not my forever role,” she says of the Chamber.

“But it’s been an honour. I’ve given it my all and now it’s time for the next chapter, for me and for the Chamber.”

Watford’s streets get a sustainable boost Safer pavements, improved drainage, greener streets and better support for electric vehicles are among a series of upgrades transforming key routes and neighbourhood parades across Watford.

The borough council is continuing a programme of investment across the town to improve streets, pavements and public spaces, making them safer, greener and more welcoming for everyone.

The works span key locations including St Albans Road, Verulam Passage and Station Road, with upcoming plans for Vicarage Road. Alongside physical improvements, wider sustainability initiatives are also being delivered, including new electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

Peter Taylor, Mayor of Watford, said: “Across Watford we are investing in our streets and public spaces, so they work better for everyone. Engagement events are planned for spring, giving residents and businesses the opportunity to share feedback and help shape the final designs.

Urgent Exit Required

Termination Provision Essentials for B2B Contracts

Whether you are a supplier or a customer, it may feel like you are sending the wrong message worrying about termination provisions in a proposed contract. However, failing to protect your position adequately could leave you trapped in an unprofitable commercial relationship or, conversely, cut loose without sufficient notice.

A customer might be reliant upon the products/ services and need sufficient termination notice from the supplier to source these elsewhere.

A supplier’s pricing etc. may depend upon a long-term commitment on the customer’s part and limited rights for the customer to terminate at short notice.

The contract could prohibit either party from terminating for convenience during an agreed initial fixed term, after which they may terminate upon serving the required notice. If so, clear wording is needed to clarify whether:

Typically, a supply contract will be for:

(a) The notice period can run during the fixed term so that the contract terminates immediately at the end of that fixed term; or alternatively

(a) A fixed initial term, after which it automatically terminates unless both parties mutually agree to extend it; or

(b) The parties are effectively locked in for the fixed term plus whatever notice period is required.

(b) A fixed initial term, after which it automatically extends for additional period(s) unless either party serves notice to terminate; or

Termination for cause

Establish a clear base term

(c) An indefinite period (in perpetuity).

For contracts which are long-term or in perpetuity, a Court may consider both parties to have an implied right to terminate for convenience upon serving “reasonable” notice, but it is far better to set out express termination rights in your contract.

Termination for convenience The parties should agree and set out in the contract suitable notice periods for either to terminate for convenience (ie. through no fault by the other party) – this period might be the same or different for the customer and supplier.

A well drafted contract will also give each party express rights to terminate immediately for cause (ie. on a “fault” basis). That sounds simple but the devil is in the details.

For example, it would be risky to permit the other party to terminate if you commit any breach whatsoever, as your breach might be extremely minor or easily capable of remedy without lasting damage. Often, a right to terminate for breach is therefore qualified by reference to “material” breaches (ie. significant breaches, which might be defined with reference to particular contractual obligations). It may also allow the party in breach a chance to remedy the breach within an agreed period to avoid termination.

Notwithstanding such qualifications, it may also be prudent to include a right for a party to terminate if the other repeatedly breaches the contract, even if these are not material breaches or are material breaches which are fixed.

A contract might also expressly permit a party to terminate if the other experiences significant financial difficulties, again with clear and precise trigger point(s) which reference particular stages of the relevant insolvency legislation and procedures.

A termination right due to “change of control” (ie. ownership) of the other party is less common. A supplier might not care who owns its (corporate) customer, provided that all bills are paid promptly and fully. Similarly, a customer might not care who owns its (corporate) supplier, as long as all services or products are supplied correctly. However, if a customer values the personal connection it has with the existing owner of its corporate supplier, or if either party is concerned about a competitor taking control of the other party, it might be appropriate to include a right to terminate if the other party’s ownership changes.

Other termination considerations The length of the contract and termination rights are fundamental terms but there are several other related issues to consider, including force majeure and also post-termination rights and responsibilities to allow the parties to smoothly go their separate ways.

In summary, if you can’t get out of it, don’t get into it. Spend thought and care on the termination provisions of your contracts and get legal advice to ensure that these are done correctly.

Broxbourne’s commitment to sustainable growth is reflected in a number of ambitious regeneration projects. Construction work on new allotments at Church Lane, Wormley, began in September 2025 and is progressing well. The development, approved in November 2022, will provide replacement allotments for current plot holders at Halfhide Lane.

The existing Halfhide Lane allotments are being removed to enable delivery of the Brookfield Riverside and Brookfield Garden Village project. The new Church Lane site will ensure that allotment provision within the borough is maintained while supporting this major regeneration scheme.

The new allotment site will feature up to 45 individual plots, along with improved parking access and landscaping works to enhance usability and appearance. The carefully planned layout will provide a functional and welcoming growing environment for residents throughout the year.

• 2,000-space car park and significant public realm improvements Together, the two developments aim to create a new retail, civic, business and leisure centre alongside housing for around 5,000 residents.

As part of the wider Renaissance programme, Waltham Cross Town Centre has undergone a comprehensive transformation designed to create a vibrant, modern environment while preserving its historic character. The Borough of Broxbourne secured £14.3 million from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund to support the project.

Following just over a year of work, the regeneration scheme was officially completed in December. The improvements have dramatically enhanced the town centre, introducing better accessibility through new pedestrian crossings and a shared cycle path, as well as landscaped areas with sustainable drainage, pocket parks, new lighting, street furniture and bicycle stands. One-way vehicle access has been introduced through the town centre, alongside additional on-street parking.

These changes are expected to attract more visitors, encourage private sector investment, generate new employment opportunities and help reduce crime and anti-social behaviour.

Local businesses will benefit from a more attractive trading environment, while residents will enjoy an improved quality of life and greater access to health, leisure and social spaces.

A bold new insight series has launched in Hertfordshire, creating a dynamic platform for businesses to engage with the conversations shaping the region’s future. Officially launched in January, Hertfordshire Horizons is designed to bring the county’s business community together.

Muffins mixed with mindfulness The winter months can be tough – shorter days, colder weather and the post-holiday slump can take a toll on energy and morale. Recognising the importance of supporting employees during this challenging season, a special event was designed to focus on workplace wellbeing, offering practical insights and connection for those shaping company culture and employee experience.

The Wellbeing in the Workplace Breakfast and Tour, hosted by the Chamber, welcomed HR and people professionals, business leaders, managers and anyone interested in cultivating healthier, more engaging workplaces. Attendees had the opportunity to explore initiatives that drive engagement and performance, connect with wellbeing experts and leave with actionable ideas.

He was joined by Tania Diggory, Founder and Director of Calmer, who delivered an insightful session on mental health and wellbeing strategies for workplaces.

The venue offered a rare opportunity to experience a workplace designed entirely around employee wellbeing. Hosted by the Chamber, the Silver Members’ Networking Breakfast brought energy and enthusiasm to its Hertfordshire offices.

Donna Schultz, CEO of the Chamber, said: “These networking breakfasts are designed to go beyond traditional introductions.

Jacqualine Moyo, Managing Director of Ness M Care Services, talks to Sarah Dale about the power of building relationships as a Chamber Patron and her vision for compassionate care

Former nurse Jacqualine Moyo established Ness M Care Services 15 years ago.

Ness M Care Services provides specialised home care services designed to give people the option to be cared for in the comfort of their homes. Their services, which are commissioned by the local NHS and social services, include care for elderly people who require support because of health or age-related factors, palliative care, adults living with dementia requiring treatment and care, people in need of intermediate care post hospital discharge, and adults living with complex and ongoing health care needs.

The organisation became a Patron member of Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce last July when its head office moved to Hertfordshire.

“Hertfordshire is a place where I really see the value of being connected to a wider business community,” she says.

“Having emigrated from Zimbabwe and built my organisation from the ground, I understood from the beginning how important it was to engage with local networks that support growth, learning and collaboration.

The Chamber has always provided exactly that – a space to build meaningful relationships beyond the care sector and remain connected to the broader business environment.

“Ness M Care Services is now a leading home care business, but we’re still at a stage of seeking higher level of influence, brand visibility and exclusive access and I believe joining the Hertfordshire Chamber as Patron members will help us achieve those goals.”

Jacqualine says that she is confident that being a Patron has “strengthened their visibility, credibility and the opportunity for collaborative problem solving with other influential Patrons and Chamber leaderships”.

“Through events, networking opportunities and ongoing support from the Chamber team, we have been able to connect with organisations who share our values and ambitions,” she says.

“These interactions are slowly opening new avenues for strategic partnerships and community engagement.

What I appreciate the most is that the Chamber brings together diverse sectors, giving us the opportunity to learn from others, exchange ideas and the opportunity for my organisation to represent and connect the home care sector with other businesses to lead and influence decisions that affect this sector.

“My advice to new members is simple: be present and be engaged. Attend the events, introduce yourself and don’t underestimate the value of informal conversations.

Collaboration doesn’t happen by accident; it happens when you show up consistently.”

Jacqualine trained as a nurse in the UK, transitioned into pharmaceutical sales and became a medical equipment specialist working with multinational companies based in South Africa. She returned to the UK to start again as a nurse and left bedside nursing at the age of 41 to start her own home care business.

“So, I know the power of building relationships,” she adds.

“The Chamber community is generous with knowledge and support, and new members can gain a lot by taking full advantage of that.”

Like many organisations in the care sector, they continue to face challenges around workforce shortages, recruitment, navigating regulatory demands and the serious budget cuts.

“Ensuring we maintain high-quality care while scaling responsibly requires constant attention,” she says.

“The Chamber can help by continuing to provide access to partners, talent networks and platforms that help local businesses share insight and best practices.

Advocacy is also crucial; having a unified voice on issues affecting our sector, particularly workforce sustainability, makes a real difference.

“Looking ahead, we aim to expand both our service offerings and our impact in the Hertfordshire community and in other areas where we have a footprint, such as Norfolk and Cambridgeshire. We’re exploring new care pathways, strengthening internal training programmes and looking at opportunities for strategic recruitment to support long-term growth. Our foundation work will continue to evolve as well, building on our commitment to community-focused initiatives.

“My personal vision for 2026 and beyond is to see Ness M Care Services continue to grow in a way that remains true to why I started it. When I was training as a nurse, my experience taught me that there was a better, more compassionate way to deliver quality care in people’s homes. That belief is still at the centre of everything we do. I look forward to opportunities to share expertise, advice and insights into the home care sector with the next generation, including my own children.”

Towards a Local Growth Plan

Hertfordshire sets out bold vision as UK’s innovation heartland Hertfordshire leaders came together at Westminster on 12 March to launch the county’s Economic Strategy and set out a shared ambition for future growth.

Hosted by Andrew Lewin, MP for Welwyn Hatfield, on behalf of Hertfordshire Growth Board, the reception brought together 100 senior representatives from Government, business, local authorities, education, faith and voluntary organisations to deliver one clear message: Hertfordshire is united behind a long-term plan 34 Inspire 73

to drive growth, widen opportunity for all and strengthen the county’s contribution to the national economy.

With a £50bn economy, world‑leading innovation assets and a strong track record of delivery, Hertfordshire begins this next chapter from a position of strength. The county is home to Europe’s leading cell and gene therapy cluster in Stevenage; nationally important agri‑tech and clean‑growth institutions; an

emerging space and defence cluster centred around Airbus; significant investment in digital infrastructure and data centres; and the second largest film and TV production economy outside London - home to one of Europe’s highest concentrations of major studios.

The Hertfordshire Economic Strategy 2026–2036 sets out a vision for how the county will build on these strengths over the next decade. By 2036, Hertfordshire will be recognised globally as the UK’s innovation

These ambitions include: •

Growing the economy to £63bn GVA by 2036, rising to £80bn by 2050

Raising productivity to £85,000 per job

•

Increasing priority‑sector employment to 270,000 jobs

•

A long‑term ambition for 800,000 jobs and 200,000 new homes by 2050

Cllr Steve Jarvis, Leader of Hertfordshire County Council, said: “Hertfordshire is already one of the largest and most productive local economies in the country, and there is a clear, shared view across our political and business leadership that mayoral devolution will help us unlock our full potential. This evening has demonstrated how much we are already delivering together – and how much more we can achieve with the right tools and levers in place to accelerate growth, improve infrastructure and widen opportunity for every part of the county.”

Baroness Sharon Taylor of Stevenage OBE, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State (Lords Minister for Housing and Local Government), reflected on Hertfordshire’s national importance, saying: “Hertfordshire’s strengths speak directly to the national priorities of productivity, innovation, skills and long-term growth, with an approach to partnership that is mature, constructive and focused on delivery.

What we have witnessed this evening is a place that understands its role in supporting the UK’s wider economic ambitions, and one that is ready to work closely with Government to make them a reality.”

Guests also heard about Hertfordshire’s dynamic creative industries, with studios across the county driving growth in film, TV and immersive production, generating skills, employment and supply chain opportunities across Hertfordshire.

Closing the evening, Peter Taylor, Elected Mayor of Watford and Chair of the Hertfordshire Growth Board, welcomed the Strategy as a collective commitment to ensuring that growth, investment and opportunity reach every part of the county - and that with the right tools and flexibility Hertfordshire can deliver growth faster and more fairly for residents and for the country.

It focuses on five priorities that will drive future growth: digital adoption and AI; skills and participation; innovation and clean growth; thriving places; and Hertfordshire’s national and international role. Together, these align closely with Government missions on productivity, skills, innovation, net zero and place‑based growth.

It also sets out the scale of Hertfordshire’s ambitions - both what the county can deliver over the next decade and what could be accelerated by 2050 with the right powers to bring forward homes, jobs and infrastructure and drive UK growth at pace.

Reflections from the planning resilience symposium

Planning is about people, place and partnership – a message that echoed throughout the Hertfordshire planning resilience symposium. Planners, Heads of Planning and private sector members of the HIDB gathered to share experiences, reflect on current challenges and consider the opportunities presented

by Local Government Reorganisation.

Experience and shared learnings

Helen Fadipe MBE, Immediate Past President at the Royal Town Planning Institution, highlighted the importance of building relationships, as collaboration becomes an anchor for growth and investment. This collaborative mindset also inspires talent within the sector, encouraging planners to develop their careers and share knowledge across authorities.

Small scale, big impact

A recurring theme was the importance of amplifying community voices - the local aspirations and stories that make places distinctive, regardless of a project’s scale.

JTP Architect, Tom Rimmington, emphasised that even the smallest design decisions can shape the overall impact of a development.

He noted that meaningful engagement and clear communication are crucial to strengthening relationships and creating developments with a positive, lasting legacy.

Seizing opportunities from challenges

With Local Government Reorganisation on the horizon, the symposium offered planners the chance to hear first-hand insights from regions that have already navigated devolution. Ed Whetham, Director at Laxton Properties, encouraged planners in the room to think about the opportunities before they happen. Drawing on his operational experience in Buckinghamshire, he highlighted the importance of keeping knowledge local, celebrating local identity, communicating openly and embracing change as a chance to refine and improve working practices. There was a strong emphasis on the value of training, guidance and professional development and how planning teams can thrive when collaboration is achieved.

By continuing to communicate clearly and work across boundaries to champion the stories that matter, Hertfordshire is signalling its ambition to deliver sustainable, long term growth.

Rebranding isn’t a design project Choosing to rebrand isn’t just about updating your design assets. It’s a leadership decision about clarity, timing and alignment that shapes how a business thinks, behaves and grows. Laura Pearce, MD of Strand, explains Rebrands are usually triggered by sensible reasons.

The business evolved. The offer has expanded. The market has shifted and your brand strategy has outgrown how the organisation currently presents itself. Where rebrands fall down isn’t creativity, it’s expectation.

Too often, rebranding is treated as a visual exercise, a refresh, an update, a new look rather than a leadership decision about clarity and alignment.

What a rebrand actually changes A successful rebrand doesn’t just change how a business looks. It changes how it behaves.

It influences how teams describe what they do, how confidently they sell and how consistently decisions are made. It brings alignment to messaging, tone and priorities, not through control but through a shared understanding.

When the right foundation is in place, creative work can flow.

When it isn’t, design ends up compensating for a deeper uncertainty.

Why timing matters more than anything else Rebrands launched too early often struggle to make an impact. The brand strategy underneath isn’t stable enough, so the brand is asked to do too much heavy lifting. Left too late and the opposite can happen. The business itself has already changed, but the brand you’re working with still reflects an earlier version of itself, something that will create confusion internally and externally. In the process, your offer is devalued.

This is why timing matters more than personal preference.

A rebrand should reflect who the business is, not who it hopes to be without the structure in place to support it.

What marketers should look out for For marketing managers, rebrands are (they really are) high-pressure moments. Warning signs can tend to appear when stakeholders are pulling in different directions, visual decisions are being debated because no one is quite clear on the positioning and then it becomes a case of trying to please everyone rather than make confident choices for the brand. Again, these aren’t design problems, they’re positioning problems, and no amount of creative genius can attempt to resolve them alone.

What strong rebrands have in common The most effective rebrands share a few traits. There is clear leadership support and decision-making. Agreement is reached early on what won’t change as well as what will. There’s a confidence to make things simple rather than over-engineer and the commitment extends beyond the launch. It’s about momentum not just noise.

Clarity before creativity Rebranding isn’t about becoming something new. It’s about something becoming clearer. When brand strategy, leadership motivation and operational readiness are together, creative work will become faster and more effective. Teams can feel free to move with confidence and the decisions they make will stick.

That’s when your rebrand stops being a design project and it starts to deliver as a business one.

Navigating the New Landscape of Succession and Exit Planning WHAT BUSINESS OWNERS NEED TO CONSIDER IN 2026 Alison Price, Partner, TC Group For many owner-managed businesses, “the future” rarely reaches the top of the agenda. With the daily pressures of clients, staff, cashflow and operations, long-term planning can feel like a luxury.

Yet one of the most important decisions an owner will ever make is how — and when — to step back while protecting the value they have created.

With significant tax changes coming into force from 2025 and 2026, including increases to Capital Gains Tax (CGT) and reforms to Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) relief, this is the right moment for business owners to reassess their succession strategy.

Below are four core exit routes for ownermanaged businesses, and how the changing landscape affects each.

Management Buyouts (MBOs)

Still viable — but the stakes have changed From April 2026, the CGT rate on disposals qualifying for Business Asset Disposal Relief (BADR) rises to 18%, with a £1 million lifetime cap. Once that allowance is used — or where conditions are not met — the full rate applies.

Because MBOs typically involve payment over time, the seller relies on the company’s future profitability and the capability of the management team. With higher tax costs, deferred consideration becomes more exposed to performance risk, placing greater emphasis

on robust forecasting, leadership strength and cashflow resilience.

Solvent Liquidation (MVL)

MBOs work best where a strong internal team is already driving growth and profits are predictable enough to support structured repayments.

They remain an effective route, but require more careful risk assessment than in previous years.

For owners who no longer wish to trade and want to extract retained value, a Members’ Voluntary Liquidation (MVL) provides a straightforward and tax-efficient mechanism.

Employee Ownership Trusts (EOTs) Culturally powerful and still tax-efficient

EOTs allow owners to sell to employees through a trust structure, preserving independence and supporting long-term continuity.

A practical solution in the right circumstances

MVLs are appropriate where the company holds significant retained cash or assets, trading has ceased, and no succession is required. They offer a structured method of winding down and distributing capital, particularly where transferable goodwill is limited.

From 26 November 2025, only 50% of the gain on disposal will be relieved from CGT, with the remaining 50% taxable at the seller’s rate.

For many owners, this results in an effective tax rate of around 12%.

Choosing the Right Route

While no longer entirely tax-free, EOTs remain comparatively efficient. Their appeal, however, goes beyond tax. For owners seeking to protect culture, reward loyalty and safeguard independence, they continue to offer a compelling balance between financial return and legacy.

An EOT may offer strong cultural continuity.

•

A trade sale may maximise financial return.

•

An MBO can preserve independence where the management team is robust.

•

An MVL may suit those seeking an orderly wind-down.

Trade Sales

Often delivering maximum value A sale to an external buyer — whether a competitor, consolidator or private equity investor — frequently achieves the highest headline valuation, particularly in sectors where scale and synergies are attractive.

As with other routes, CGT on qualifying disposals rises to 18% from April 2026, subject to the BADR lifetime cap.

Preparation is critical. Strengthening financial reporting, systemising operations and clarifying market positioning can materially enhance value.

Trade sales typically suit owners seeking a clean break and maximum commercial return, though they may involve the greatest cultural change.

There is no universal “best” exit. The right choice depends on financial objectives, appetite for risk, leadership capability and personal priorities.

What is clear is that tax changes have increased the importance of early and deliberate planning.

Planning with Purpose Succession planning is no longer simply about finding an exit — it is a strategic process that shapes the future of the business, its people and the owner’s legacy. With significant tax changes taking effect from 2025 onwards, there has never been a more important time for business owners to review their options.

The strongest outcomes arise when owners begin planning three to five years ahead, build a capable leadership team, and explore every route with clarity — financial, cultural and personal.

UK economy set for slow growth amid global uncertainty Weak investment, global uncertainty and higher labour costs are expected to hold back UK growth while inflation and unemployment rise in the near term

The latest British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) economic forecast suggests slow growth in 2026, higher inflation due to the Middle East crisis and rising unemployment as the labour market softens.

The BCC forecast is the first economic assessment by a business organisation since the Spring Statement and renewed conflict in the Middle East.

While the current geopolitical situation remains highly uncertain and could change the economic outlook considerably, the key points in the forecast are: •

GDP in 2026 revised down to 1.0 per cent from 1.2 per cent in the previous forecast), with growth forecast of 1.3 per cent in 2027 and 1.1 per cent in 2028.

•

Global uncertainty is expected to push UK inflation higher than expected, reaching 2.7 per cent, before easing to 1.9 per cent in 2027.

•

Unemployment is expected to increase to 5.5 per cent in 2026 (up from 5.1 per cent in the previous forecast) and stay at that rate through 2027.

•

The interest rate is expected to remain at 3.75 per cent this year, before cuts to 3.25 per cent by the end of 2027.

•

Exports are projected to grow by just 0.7 per cent in 2026 (down from 1.8 per cent in the last forecast), as global uncertainty hits UK trade.

UK economic outlook UK GDP is expected to grow by only 1.0 per cent in 2026, reflecting weak productivity, business investment, consumer spending and ongoing global uncertainty. It is then forecast to pick up to 1.3 per cent in 2027 and 1.1 per cent in 2028.

The services sector continues to drive the UK’s limited GDP growth, though growth is forecast to ease to 1.2 per cent.

Construction and manufacturing are forecast to contract this year by -1.3 per cent and -0.3 per cent respectively.

Business investment is expected to flatline this year (0 per cent), a revision downwards from the previous forecast (0.9 per cent). It is expected to pick up again to 1.3 per cent in 2027.

In the short term, wage growth is expected to remain elevated through 2026, staying just below 4 per cent, before easing towards below 3 per cent during 2027.

The near-term inflation path suggests the Bank of England may hold off further rate cuts, with the base rate forecast to remain at 3.75 per cent in 2026. The forecast suggests the rate will fall to 3.25 per cent in 2027.

Unemployment to rise further in 2026 The BCC expects the unemployment rate to rise to 5.5 per cent in 2026 (up from the previous projection of 5.1 per cent) with high labour costs dampening the hiring appetite of business.

Unemployment is expected to remain elevated at 5.5 per cent next year before easing to 5.3 per cent in 2028.

Youth unemployment remains an area of concern as labour costs and AI erode entry level jobs. It is expected to be 17 per cent in 2026, peaking at 17.1 per cent in 2027 before falling to 16.7 per cent in 2028.

Trade outlook remains subdued Export growth is forecast to slow to 0.7 per cent this year.

The downgrade reflects the impact of deepening global uncertainty, notably from the crisis in the Middle East and US tariff uncertainty.

The forecast for imports in 2026 has also been downgraded to 0.6 per cent, reflecting weaker consumer demand and the depreciation in sterling.

David Bharier, Head of Research at the British Chambers of Commerce said: “The UK economy remains stuck in a lowgrowth pattern. Our forecast of just 1 per cent growth in 2026 reflects weak productivity, subdued investment and cautious consumer spending.

“The recent escalation of conflict in Iran risks interrupting progress made on inflation. Higher energy prices linked to it could keep inflation firmly above the 2 per cent target and lead the Bank of England to hold the interest rate longer than expected.

Iran conflict could drive up inflation

“At the same time, elevated labour costs, stemming from national insurance increases and new employment regulations could weigh on hiring decisions. That has the potential to push the unemployment rate higher, making it especially difficult for younger people to enter the jobs market.

Higher oil and gas prices linked to the conflict in the Middle East are expected to push CPI inflation up to 2.7 per cent by the end of 2026 (compared to 2.1 per cent in the previous forecast). Inflation is then forecast to ease back towards the Bank of England’s target in 2027, slowing to 1.9 per cent

by Q4 2027.

“Looking further ahead, our research shows that firms are increasingly adopting AI tools. While the immediate impact on employment is likely to remain limited, deeper integration could reshape the labour market more fundamentally while offering an opportunity to lift the UK’s persistently weak productivity growth.”

Trade support gap leaves firms flying solo New research from the British Chambers of Commerce and GS1 UK reveals exporters feel largely unsupported in navigating trade policy changes, with none saying they receive comprehensive government support Zero per cent of surveyed UK exporters say they have “comprehensive support” from government to manage trade policy changes, according to new research by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), in partnership with global standards organisation GS1 UK. The BCC’s Insights Unit surveyed 939 firms – 40 per cent exporters – with 0 per cent of responding businesses saying government was providing comprehensive support on trade policy changes.

Of all firms surveyed, only 13 per cent feel they get sufficient support, while 32 per cent and 31 per cent feel they either have not much support or no support at all, respectively.

Exporters are more likely to say they receive little trade policy support from government. 41 per cent feel they don’t have much support and 32 per cent no support at all. Only 17 per cent say they are getting sufficient support. Again, 0 per cent say they get comprehensive support.

The data comes as the BCC and GS1 UK publish a new report examining how digital trade can help transform economic growth. The report concludes that “standing still on trade digitalisation, e-certification and e-labelling is a manifesto for economic decline”.

The report calls for a joint plan between UK government and business to manage digital trade. The plan focusses on: •

Creating e-labelling and digital product passport systems that work seamlessly across key markets.

•

The UK should show leadership in building global adoption of electronic trade documentation.

•

Establish effective digital trade corridors following the UK’s soon to be launched pilot schemes with France and Germany.

•

Creating new pathways for export support and market expansion through private sector and BCC led trade accelerators

William Bain, Head of Trade Policy at the British Chambers of Commerce said: “Our research is clear, UK exporters are navigating trade policy changes largely alone.

“At a time when the global trade landscape is changing constantly, firms tell us comprehensive support from government is lacking. Many businesses feel they are getting little or no advice.

“To help grow the economy and keep the UK competitive, we need a joint plan between government and business to drive forward digital trade. Standing still isn’t an option.

“The UK has real strengths in digital trade documentation and world class private sector capability. Those strengths need to be urgently harnessed alongside comprehensive support to exporters across the UK.” Iain Walker, Industry Engagement Director at GS1 UK added: “Fifty years ago, GS1 standards transformed global trade by giving industry a shared language.

“Today, we need the same collaborative spirit to prepare businesses for the digital age, from e‑labelling and digital product passports to electronic documentation. Our research shows UK exporters are being left to navigate this transition largely on their own, without the government support they need.

“The private sector and GS1 UK already have world‑class digital capability. What’s missing is a genuine partnership with government to put the right frameworks in place. Without it, the UK risks falling behind.”

Strong communication makes a strong leader Ganesh Gnanamoorthy, Planning and Place Service Director at Broxbourne Borough Council, talks to Sarah Dale about the importance of strong communication to being an effective leader and who he looks up to as an inspirational role model Adaptable is how Ganesh Gnanamoorthy would describe his leadership style.

“Ultimately, there are goals that need to be achieved, and getting people to buy into the journey is essential for success, but people respond differently to different approaches,” says Ganesh, Planning and Place Service Director at Broxbourne Borough Council.

“Clear and effective communication is always key but understanding people and what motivates them and makes them tick is so important. Councils are big organisations and it is easy for people to feel like they are part of a smaller team (for example, planning or housing), without feeling like they are part of the wider organisation or understanding how their work fits into the bigger picture.”

Having strong communication skills is key and he credits Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce with facilitating good lines of communication with other members.

“I am a firm believer that communication is vital for fostering positive relationships and delivering results. The Chamber helps to facilitate effective communication, both in terms of providing networking and events where our existing partners and businesses might be but also providing us the opportunity to meet and engage with businesses we have never previously worked with. This helps us to understand and respond to the challenges businesses face, increase awareness of why the borough is such a good place to do business, form and build positive and productive partnerships, and assist economic development more widely.”

Ganesh has been involved directly with the Chamber since May 2025 when he joined Broxbourne Council.

Broxbourne – and local authorities across the board – are facing “significant challenges”, including constrained finances and pressures to deliver services on tight budgets.

“At the heart of what we do is our residents and businesses,” he says. “They will always remain at the forefront of the council’s mind, and delivering services to ensure they can thrive will always be the focus despite the challenges.

“It is rare that I have a conversation these days without talking about Local Government Reorganisation (LGR). Hertfordshire is working to a timeline which will see the existing 10 borough councils and one county council combined into either two, three or four larger unitary authorities – we will find out from central government which it will be this summer. This is a significant overhaul of local government and how services are provided, and this will bring its challenges.

“The work undertaken in the lead-up to May 2028 when the new authorities are vested is critical, and Broxbourne Council is working to ensure that the transition is as smooth as possible for residents and businesses, beyond the date when Broxbourne Council no longer exists.”

Although LGR is dominating much of the Council’s work at present, the Local Authority will be opening a grants programme with funds secured through the S106 agreement related to the Google Data Centre. Officers are also working on making the council more sustainable including the installation of solar panels on some of the council-owned buildings.

“Additionally, we continue to engage with landowners and interested parties on a number of development sites across the borough, while work on progressing the Brookfield development continues at pace, which will provide a large number of new homes and business opportunities within the borough,” he adds.

And who does Ganesh look up to as a positive role model as a leader?

“Professionally, there have been several leaders who have inspired me,” he says. “I learn best from watching and observing how other people do things.

“In my personal life and as an Arsenal fan, it’s got to be captain Tony Adams. He is a very motivational person. He wasn’t the most flamboyant or artistic or elegant footballer, but he was very hardworking and overcame issues in both his professional and personal life. He is an inspirational leader to me.”

Steve worked in banking in Hong Kong in wealth management and investments before moving to the UK in 2021 to work for HSBC UK. He joined iFAST Global Bank in 2023 and built the personal banking team and, along with CEO Inayat Kashif, established the commercial banking team.

“We are new to the industry, but at the same time, we are actively listening to our customers. We are growing our business and growing our customers’ businesses.”

iFAST Global Bank is based in the UK at Canary Wharf and has a team of 70-80 employees. In November, they are moving to a larger office, which is double the size of their current space, within the same building to support their growth and are also recruiting to grow the team. As well as the UK team, iGB has a team in Asia, including an IT team in Malaysia and an additional customer services team in Malaysia.

“We became Chamber members as we are quite new to the area,” adds Steve.

“Having customer service teams based in both the UK and Malaysia mean that our customers can reach us whatever time of dayit is and from wherever they are based,” adds Steve.

The company, which won the Best Newcomer Award at the British Bank Awards 2025, is on a growth trajectory, however, Steve says the challenge they face is raising awareness of how digital banking can benefit customers.

“Business banking can be quite traditional,” explains Steve. “Business owners are sticking with the separate current and savings accounts as they don’t realise there is an option like ours, which makes banking simpler. It is quite a new concept.

They joined West London Chambers of Commerce two years ago.

Trade Accelerator to transform export opportunities A new six-month pilot will support up to 30 high-growth UK life sciences SMEs to enter the fast-growing South-East Asian market, helping convert innovation into export contracts and drive UK economic growth

A pioneering new project by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), in partnership with NatWest and the British Chamber of Commerce in Singapore, is aiming to scale up UK exports.

The six-month pilot programme, the Singapore Life Sciences Trade Accelerator, will connect UK firms in the sector with the burgeoning SouthEast Asian market for their products.

It will talent spot up to 30 SMEs, with the greatest potential to grow sales in South-East Asia, and provide them with a bespoke service to enter the market.

The ambitious scheme has been designed in close co-operation with the British Chamber of Commerce in Singapore. It is also supported by the Department for Business and Trade, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, UK Export Finance, Innovate UK and the Singapore Economic Development Board.

Steve Lynch MBE, Director of International Trade at the BCC, said: “The UK does not have a strategy gap; it has a delivery gap. We have no shortage of innovation. What we’ve lacked is a coordinated, commercially driven system to convert that into export contracts at scale.

“For too long, the policy development of trade strategies has kept businesses at arms-length, leaving firms, especially SMEs, to navigated global markets alone. The Trade Accelerator will change that.

“This is economic diplomacy in action, with government, NatWest

and Chambers aligned behind one objective: helping high-growth British firms win overseas.

“Singapore is our launchpad into a much wider regional market, which is the fastest growing in the world for life sciences and health innovation.

If our firms can succeed there, they can compete anywhere.

“This pilot is proof of concept.

The ambition is national scale.

“Every £1 invested in a Trade Accelerator has the potential to unlock multiples in export sales, investment and high-value UK jobs. This is about delivery, confidence and proving Britain can win in the global race for growth.”

The move comes as the latest BCC research reveals the number of businesses reporting increased export orders has fallen from 31 per cent in Q2 2018 to 22 per cent in Q4 2025.

If the value of UK exports had been just 2 per cent higher in 2024, GDP growth would have been around 1.75 per cent instead of 1.1 per cent.

The lessons learned from the pilot will be used to further develop and scale up support for British exportready businesses to other sectors and markets. These will include the US, India, the Gulf and wider Indo-Pacific region, using the BCC’s worldwide Chamber network.

Innovation scheme kicks off 2026 with focus on airport retail An exciting launch kicked off 2026 for a London airport’s quarterly innovation scheme, with Q1 focusing on digital retail and logistics innovation.

College marketing team recognised for putting students first A Hertfordshire further education provider has earned national recognition after transforming its student application journey into a simpler, more career-focused experience.

The North Hertfordshire College marketing team was Highly Commended in the Innovation and Creativity category at the FE First Awards 2026, in recognition of its bold and studentcentred approach.

The team was praised for its pathways project – a complete redesign of the College’s application process. Instead of applying for a specific course and level, prospective students now choose a broad pathway, such as creative industries or construction and trades, before being guided on to the most suitable level programme.

Judges also highlighted the introduction of ‘offer days’, which replaced traditional interviews with hands-on, taster-style assessment sessions. This more engaging approach allows applicants to experience their chosen pathway in practice, while helping staff better assess individual suitability and aspirations.

The pathways project streamlined 70 individual courses into just 20 pathways and delivered impressive results, including a 5.5 per cent increase in enrolments. Feedback has also been overwhelmingly positive, with 97 per cent of students saying they found the application process clear, while parents and guardians awarded it an average rating of 4.33 stars.
