BUSINESS ACADEMY The membership has remained static, with Paul Mirage working hard to retain and grow our numbers. This has not been an easy task but Paul has risen to the challenge. Our aim is to increase our numbers over the next 12 months to secure the future of the Chamber. Events have been of particular importance to the Chamber in terms of finances, and we continue to provide a packed programme of events. Our monthly Breakfast Matters which are sponsored by the Cresta Court continue to be a success covering a variety of subject matters and attendance numbers rising. The Jewel in the Crown was once again the Business Awards last October at the Cresta Court; Paul Hindley and his staff were marvelous and the room looked amazing. Gordon Burns hosted the event for the second year running, with 145 guests and winners in the room. I really can’t say it’s been an easy year, but the spirit of the Chamber has grown stronger. We have affiliated with local community groups to ensure there is a common vision for the future of Altrincham and Chris Stout, my President Elect, is working on the same for Sale. Community Blackstone Solicitors appoint Marketing Profile spirit ere at the Window Company we love to help out with local community projects where we can and “4 Cheeky Monkeys” was something that came to our attention.

Cheeky Monkeys is a non-profit family centre and toddler group set up by Jeneane and her mum Lesley. They set out to renovate a dilapidated scout hut in Sale, they initially started out with their own savings and when that ran out they had to seek funding to finish the building.

“

ale-based Cheshire Blackstone Solicitors has appointed local PR and Events Company Marketing Profile to work on strengthening their brand and raising their profile across the North West.

Managing Director of Blackstone, Emma Nawaz

Since the appointment, Blackstone Solicitors have achieved both local and national media coverage and been shortlisted for the Legal Awards in Manchester.

Managing Director Emma said: “I have known Marketing Profile for some years and have seen the results of their work with other businesses both in PR coverage and Event management. “Our client base is vast and growing and I felt that the time was now right to highlight our services to a wider audience. Since appointing Marketing Profile of Hale we have achieved significant media coverage locally and nationally, including the Financial Times, TV and Radio 4.”

We wish Jeanine and Lesley all the best of luck with the centre...

“Media coverage is important for any business in raising their profile. Blackstone handles many cases with outstanding results, we are pleased to be able to help deliver that message to a wider audience and in turn generate more business for them.”

The Window Company helped out by donating and installing two new doors for the centre. We also recommended the Mayor to attend their open day and officially open the centre. We sent a quick email to Sue Aldridge to see if this is something the Altrincham & Sale Chamber could help with and that’s all it took. The Chamber contacted Jeneane direct and sorted everything out. We wish Jeanine and Lesley all the best of luck with the centre; they have done a fantastic job and also a big thank you to the Chamber for their assistance to Jeneane with the Mayor.

Set up by Emma Nawaz in 2010 along with a secretary, the business has grown now has a team of seven. Blackstone Solicitors specialises in dispute resolution.

Jeff Atkins has successfully helped the University of Warwick upgrade facilities for the Centre for Education Studies and Centre for Professional Education as part of its investment to enhance the student experience. The original building was built over 50 years ago by the local Council and it no longer provided the modern, rich and diverse learning environment necessary for a top ten institution like Warwick. The University had a number of objectives that included: • Improve use and quality of spaces by improved zoning of activities. • Improve quality of teaching accommodation, placing it in a more convenient location with good access. • Provision of a lift and improvements in the circulation to aid navigation and orientation. • Optimise position of study spaces and optimize usage. • Improve accessibility for disabled users. • Enhance IT provision. • Support management change initiatives to improve business functionality and service. • Improve staff satisfaction in their working environment.

ChamberFocus

Students and staff at the University now have access to a remodelled building accommodating staff offices, student hub and teaching rooms which provides a more dynamic and creative space for learning.

Becky’s determination a real inspiration later Heelis LLP Partner Becky Sharp has become known in the firm’s Manchester and Cheshire offices as the Lawyer in Lycra.

S

She earned the name thanks to her dedicated training programme to run the London Marathon to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support after battling cancer herself. Since being diagnosed with cervical cancer in May 2006, Becky, 28, has been fighting the disease and is now in remission. Throughout her treatment and recovery she received extensive support from Macmillan Cancer Support, and the Macmillan nurses have helped her and her family though a very difficult time. Becky said: “Being diagnosed with cervical cancer was a real shock and, like anyone who receives that diagnosis, I had a million questions and worries.

“I feel incredibly lucky to now be in remission and also to have received the support of the Macmillan nurses who were there with practical and emotional help and advice whenever I needed it. “Everyone should be able to access this level of care and I wanted to show my appreciation for all that they have done for me by running the London Marathon to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support and their amazing nurses.” Head of Private Client Chris Partington said: “Everyone in the firm is so very proud of Becky and her fight to overcome her cancer; her tenacity and drive is truly inspiring.”

Donations to Becky’s London Marathon fund can be made at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Beck Sharp.

Awards success for lawyer later Heelis LLP is celebrating after solicitor Georgina Bradshaw received Highly Commended in the SLawyer of the Year category of the 2014 Made in Manchester Awards. Georgina joined the Slater Heelis Private Client team in May 2013 and specialises in areas involving mental capacity and Court of Protection work. She is responsible for running the day-to-day professional deputyship files for over 30 clients and managing over £5million of client money.

The awards recognise Manchester’s top young professional talent and Georgina received her prize at the ceremony at Manchester’s Midland Hotel on 6th February.

She has also overcome remarkable personal circumstances including taking a law degree exam while in labour with her first child.

Chair of future pro.manchester Tim Grogan, the organisers of the event, said: “The winners are the best and brightest of Manchester’s rising stars and shining examples of the young business talent that makes this city truly an amazing place to work. We are delighted to recognise this and celebrate their successes this evening at The Made in Manchester Awards.” Senior Partner Mike Fox said: “Georgina is thoroughly deserving of this recognition and we are tremendously proud of her and all she has achieved. She is a remarkable example of a lawyer who is as committed to her career and her clients as she is to her young family and she is a great role model for young women who are rising through the ranks of the legal profession.”

ChamberFocus

Georgina was recognised at the awards for both her professional success – which includes securing work and referrals from a number of Local Authorities and managing the firm’s first legal apprentice – and for her personal commitment to her job, which has seen her becoming a trusted and valued confidante to her often elderly and vulnerable clients.

She went on to pass her exams and complete her LPC training, and working for a city centre firm before joining Slater Heelis LLP in 2013.

Ask the Expert Linda Wright Planning Consultant & Development Expert

The questions I am most frequently asked are: Do I need planning permission?

Q do I need a planning QWhy consultant if I have an architect? are my chances of QWhat success? QHow long will it take? QHow much will it cost?

ChamberFocus

The carrying out of building, engineering, mining and other operations or change in the use of any building or other land will constitute ’development’ and will normally require planning permission. However, certain limited forms of development may be carried out without the need to apply for planning permission – known as “Permitted Development”. These “Permitted Development” rights can

8

apply to a wide range of proposals and have very recently been increased and broadened. The recent changes to the planning system mean that a thorough and up to date knowledge is essential to know whether or not your plans need permission or can be built without it – it can be costly if you have inaccurate advice and get this wrong!

With more complex development it can take several weeks to prepare the detailed reports and information need to support an application. Once received by the Council a planning application should be dealt with in 8 to 13 weeks for more complicated matters – but less for a householder proposal.

An architect will provide the drawings and the ‘vision’. But it is not worth having plans drawn up if the basic principle of the development fails to comply with planning policy. It is best to check with a planning expert before spending money on drawings.

I tailor planning services to particular needs. I understand how important it is for clients to keep the ‘front-end’ costs of development proposals to a minimum whilst ensuring that you get sound professional planning advice. I will, where possible, agree competitive fixed fee arrangements with fees broken down into the various stages of the project. This helps you to properly plan and budget for your proposal with no ‘hidden surprises’.

Your chances of success in securing planning permission will depend on many factors including the planning policy background, any relevant planning history relating to the site and the impact the development may have on its site and setting, and the amenities of neighbouring occupiers.

BreakfastMatters “BREAKFAST MATTERS” OF 16 JANUARY 2014

THE FIRST BREAKFAST MATTERS OF 2014 UNPICKED PENSIONS, TALKED TAX – AND SAT US DOWN he first 2014 “Breakfast Matters” was busy. Over 40 members and guests packed into the Cresta Court to have breakfast, network and hear what’s happening locally.

T

Our President, Sue Aldridge, wished us a prosperous New Year. Her resolutions had lasted a whole 3 days – we shuffled awkwardly, wishing ours had lasted as long. One firmer resolution is to re-invigorate the Chamber Committee and Sue invited us to consider joining. Lastly, she welcomed Wayne Shaw of The Window Company as a new Member. Tony Collier, our Chairman, updated us on the Chamber’s contribution to the development of Altrincham as a place to live and work. Tony, Sue and Jackie Campbell have all been working with “Altrincham Forward”. They represented our views on projects like the Interchange, the Markets, the Hospital and the new shared-street concept (see Poynton). We will start seeing the results in 2014. As Chair of the Altrincham Business Neighbourhood Forum, Tony has also been influencing Trafford Council’s planning policy, making sure our town has the right blend of homes, retail, leisure and business.

Chris Burnham, Sue Aldridge and Tony Collier

Chris Burnham of Buckland Harvester then talked about Pensions Auto-Enrolment. He admitted this would not have us on the edge of our seats. Nonetheless, it will affect 50% of those of us present; it is happening right now; and non-compliance will mean a £500 fine – a day. So we can’t ignore it. Chris talked about employers’ duties, employee entitlement, contribution levels and the software needed. It was as simple as Trainline’s fare structure, so Buckland Harvester will be a useful contact on Auto-enrolment. Tony Collier returned to talk about amusing tax stories (not something you hear every day). The last day to submit our tax return is 31 January but almost 1m people missed the deadline last year. Tony read out some amusing excuses given to HMRC, including a dead goldfish, yachts, bad backs and useless husbands. But seriously, missing the deadline means a certain fine and maybe surcharges.

Sue Aldridge and Wayne Shaw

Time then for the business card draw. David Milburn of Stowe Family Law won the Dinner for Two at the Cresta’s Dettori’s Restaurant, something to look forward to. Now back to networking – discussing what we had heard, catching up with friends and making new contacts. Always a great part of Breakfast Matters.

BreakfastMatters BREAKFAST MATTERS 6 MARCH 2014

THE MARCH ‘BREAKFAST MATTERS’ TOOK US FROM POTENTIAL LEGAL DISASTERS TO THE ENTHUSIASM OF YOUTH ou can tell winter is ending once the mornings start getting lighter. And you can tell local business is improving when more people are leasing commercial properties. At the Chamber’s Breakfast Matters in early March, we heard how to get a good deal – and what the pitfalls are.

Y

As always, we were well looked after by the Cresta Court Hotel. Over 50 businesses turned up to enjoy the coffee and bacon rolls, to network with local friends and to make new contacts. Sue Aldridge, our President, then settled us into our chairs and welcomed the first speaker, Quentin Duckworth of Darbys Solicitors. His topic was ‘Heads of Terms’, which didn’t really mean much to many of us. After he had finished however, we were all clearer about leasing commercial properties. It is a complex area but Quentin covered all the critical points succinctly and clearly. He talked about choosing the right property in the first place; how to agree the right term and rate; the set-up costs and who pays them. All his points were important but two areas seemed to be the biggest elephant traps: break clauses and liability for repairs. Several nods in the audience confirmed this. We were certainly clear about one thing at the end of Quentin’s talk – Heads of Terms is a complex area and anyone about to lease a property should seek specialist advice. Quentin offered to review any members’ prospective leases to highlight any immediate concerns.

L-R: Tony Collier, Chairman; Liam Symonds, Trafford College; Sue Aldridge, President; Quentin Duckworth, Darbys Solicitors

ChamberFocus

We then moved from potential legal disasters to the welcome enthusiasm of youth. Liam Symonds from Trafford College described how the mentoring support at the College had greatly helped his business ideas. So much so, that he is setting up a specific social media mentor network. It will match a student’s business ambitions with experience from the appropriate industry, making it easier and quicker for students to meet the right mentor for them. Always supportive of these type of initiatives, we warmly applauded Liam.

12

Angela Grace then drew the business card for the dinner for two in Cresta Court’s Dettori’s Restaurant. Richard Smith of Stephens & George won this prize and will doubtless have an excellent meal there. After these formal presentations were over, we refilled our cups and it was back to networking and to discuss what we had heard.

BreakfastMatters “BUDGET BREAKFAST BRIEFING” OF 3 APRIL 2014

THIS IS WHAT THE BUDGET MEANT FOR CHAMBER BUSINESSES pril’s “Breakfast Matters” networking event was a little different from normal. As always, Cresta A Court Hotel were an excellent host; as always, over 40 Chamber members and guests attended. But this time the focus was on national, rather than local matters – the Budget. Sue Aldridge, our President, introduced Marion Brewer and Sarah Hornby of Baker Tilly. Their challenge was to summarise the parts of the Budget that were relevant to us, to explain them in layman’s language – and to do it in 30 minutes. They succeeded in all three. They split the Budget into distinct areas and explained the important parts we might have missed. These were: Business changes: Corporation Tax is reduced to 21% now, and to 20% in 2015. The VAT threshold is increased to £81,000. And there will be stronger anti tax-avoidance measures (not relevant to us, of course). Employment changes: Employer NI is reduced by £2,000 in this new tax year and next year, there will be no NI payable for SMEs employing under 21 year olds. That will help the Chamber’s support for apprenticeships. Personal tax changes: A dividend reward scheme looks better than a bonus system, for both employer and employee; the advice is to investigate Share Ownership. For those in Limited Liability Partnerships, there are stricter tax avoidance measures (again, not relevant to us…). Marion and Sarah looked for the usual nasty surprises hidden in the Government’s weighty Budget briefing pack. But they couldn’t find any. Perhaps there’s an election soon… Then it was back to local, sporting matters. James Miley of the Taekwon-Do Academy in Sale asked for our advice on developing the Academy. There were the usual generous offers of help from Chamber Members. Sarah Hagan updated us on the “Pure Gym” opening soon near the new Altrincham Interchange and that Chamber members would get corporate membership rates. It’ll be handy for end-of-day workouts. Finally, the business card draw for the dinner for two in Cresta Court’s Dettori’s Restaurant. It was won by David Bellin, a stalwart of the Chamber, and well deserved. We refilled our cups and returned to networking and to discuss the effects of the Budget for our businesses. Images courtesy of Tobias Pearson at Munsamy Photographic.

THE NEW YEAR LUNCH - 7 FEBRUARY 2014

Remembering what makes us special ur New Year Lunch was held at The Bowdon Rooms on 7 February when Sue Aldridge, our President, welcomed Graham Brady MP, The Mayor of Trafford, Cllr Dylan Butt, and a full room of members. Sue had just been re-elected as President and deservedly so.

O

Sue reminded us of the Chamber’s strengths; it is 105 years old; there are over 200 members; it has strong links to other local business groups; and how like-minded we all are – supportive of others, non-political and very sociable.

L-R: Tony Collier, Chairman; Graham Brady MP; Mayor,Cllr Dylan Butt; Sue Aldridge, President and Paul Boyfield

The lunch’s sponsor – Paul Boyfield of Lexington Communications – then spoke. He joined the Chamber 5 years ago, when he set up his PR company. It specialises in support for property companies and now employs 10 staff. And business is good. Richard Simon of RS Consultancy was welcomed as a new member before we tucked into a fine Bowdon Rooms lunch. Over coffee, Graham Brady, the MP for Altrincham and Sale West spoke. He is the Chamber’s Vice-Patron and has worked with us for many years. Graham talked about three topics: • HS2. He felt the origins of the project were unclear and he was doubtful about its vast use of scarce funds. However, it could be good for local businesses and, if the compensation was right, house owners need not feel poorly treated. Nonetheless, Graham felt the devil was in the detail and has already asked the Transport Secretary several questions.

ChamberFocus

Sue Aldridge and Richard Simon

14

• Localism. Graham emphasised that Altrincham was now competing not only with the Trafford Centre and Manchester, but also with the growth of online purchasing. This means a different high-street shape, size and purpose, where residential and other uses have a greater importance. • Politics. After the very sad loss of Paul Goggins MP, Graham felt the by-election showed that UK’s future direction wasn’t clear. But he was delighted to say that for first time for several years, the economy is looking up... with three “buts”. There is still a heavy London bias; national spending still exceeds income; the global pressures have not gone away. So it will be tight for a while yet.

Sue Aldridge and Anne Jardine

After some questions from the floor, Sue drew the lunch to a close. But not before she presented Anne Jardine, the Chamber’s resourceful Office Manager, with some flowers for service in 2013 that was way beyond the call of duty. Anne was rightly well applauded.

Smart Financial enjoys regional awards success

M

ark Todman, Director of Smart Financial receiving the award from Milton Jones who was the host of the event Altrincham-based Smart Financial won the prestigious Adviser Firm of the Year – North West award at the Professional Adviser 2014 Awards. The honour rewards the firm for having outstanding, repeatable, TCF (treating customers fairly) advice processes. The entry submission required the firm to clearly demonstrate excellence and rigour in its financial planning through completion of a client scenario case study, which was designed to put the firm’s advice practises to the ultimate test. Steve Martin, Managing Director, said: “I am delighted that our firm has been recognised as the leading adviser in our region, which nicely complements the fact that we are one of only three Accredited Financial Planning Firms™ in the North West. “When I established the business five years ago it was with a philosophy that we would be focused entirely on the future needs of our clients and helping them to achieve their lifestyle goals and aspirations and we absolutely stay true to that each and every time. “We take a very personal, interactive approach to our client engagement from the outset and I am really pleased that the thorough planning process which we work through stood up to the rigours of the judging procedure.” The firm overcame strong competition to land the regional prize, which was presented to Mark Todman, Director, at a gala awards dinner in London.

We’re still staying true to our roots here in Sale, where we have been based for many years. The combination of our new locations aligned with high calibre additions to our team means that we can continue to build on our reputation into this year and beyond.”

hen I became President, it was important to me to keep the momentum of the Chamber moving forward and to reflect the business world of today. I was aware that the Chamber had concentrated on networking, and whilst an essential business tool, I felt it was important to be able to provide the members with added value for their business.

The Breakfast Matters events held monthly at the Cresta Court Hotel have a new format and focus on current issues and also provide a networking opportunity. With the attendance of the breakfast meetings growing and provoking more interaction from the membership, it encouraged me to launch the Chamber Business Academy. I have designed a programme of 10 sessions to appeal to a wide audience of members and non-members to assist with not only start-ups but also to appeal to existing businesses who want to gain more knowledge.

ChamberFocus

As a former corporate banker, it was always apparent to me that business people were knowledgeable and innovative in their own area, but there was little assistance with the mysteries of how to run a business. The programme is designed to address this and who better to help me deliver the programme than the experts in their field. I have been overwhelmed by the support of members who are willing to share their knowledge of their specialist subjects and become mentors for the Chamber. Hale Grill and Myerson solicitors have kindly offered to sponsor the programme by providing a venue and refreshments.

Bringing through the next generation oan Scott, Assistant Principal for Adult Learning & Skills at Trafford College, discusses how Trafford College are working with local businesses to maximise their output with a range of training and Apprenticeship programmes.

J

Joan has been working at Trafford College for over 25 years and plays a key role in the development of training delivered to both students and businesses to promote a healthy, local economy. Over the last few years, more and more businesses are discovering the benefits of hiring an Apprentice as they can bring many benefits; lower costs for training and recruitment, tailored skills development, increased productivity, and the addition of specialist skills that can help you and your business keep abreast of new technologies. “One of my main priorities is the delivery of our Apprenticeship programmes, ensuring we listen and respond to the needs of local businesses. Last year the College enrolled approximately 1400 Apprenticeships, and we’re aiming to increase this during the current academic year. Our Apprenticeships cover a variety of specialisms, some in areas that support businesses generally such as Accounting, Team Leading, Management, Administration, Customer Service and Facilities. Others in very specialised areas including Pharmacy, Engineering, Childcare, Beauty Therapy, Professional Cookery and Gym Instructing.”

ChamberFocus

“Another priority is supporting individuals into work, working closely with Job Centre Plus staff and many other local partners such as Trafford Council, to deliver courses that will equip learners with the relevant skills to be more employable. Our ‘Skills Shop’ at intu Trafford Centre only opened in September but already is a huge success, taking daily referrals from local job centres, providing intensive training and then supports individuals into employment opportunities within the Centre.”

20

As an Assistant Principal, Joan understands the benefits of developing and maintaining a solid and highly skilled workforce through appropriate training. This ensures staff keep up to date with the latest practices to maximise business output and notes that with the help and support of staff at Trafford College you can find the right package for your business.

One of my main priorities is the delivery of our Apprenticeship programmes, ensuring we listen and respond to the needs of local businesses.

“Our aim is to provide responsive provision that meets the needs of employers locally and regionally. At the College, we offer a wide range of flexible programmes from half-day bespoke training to two or three year highly technical Apprenticeship courses. Over the last few years the College has reshaped itself to give employers and learners the flexibility of response that modern companies demand.” “Trafford First, the College’s own recruitment team meet with Businesses to look at their goals, what needs they may have and how training can enhance their business, then create appropriate, bespoke training packages to suit. Our team take time to understand the business and what the best solution would be and where possible we maximise funding that is available such as from the Skills Funding Agency and European Social Fund to help support over-stretched training budgets. We also have fully funded courses to ‘up-skill’ people in work with no or low skills, giving them more opportunities to progress within the business, and be more productive.” Trafford College is one of Greater Manchester’s leading training providers with over 500 staff committed to developing students

and getting them work ready. The College’s £50 million investment in new buildings and facilities allows employers to benefit from their workforce being trained in state of the art facilities, specific to their sector. Joan adds “Trafford College is a great College and offers a fantastic opportunity for businesses to work closely with us. We offer a high quality, responsive and reliable service to businesses. Ofsted has judged the College as ‘Outstanding’ and we have also been awarded National Beacon College status which is awarded to the top 8% of Colleges in the country.” “Trafford College offers a simple approach, responding quickly and efficiently to enquiries. Businesses cannot wait for answers; we aim to have responsiveness at the heart of the operation, backed up by ‘key account’ management and the development of strong and sustainable relationships with employers such as our recent successful collaboration with Siemens.” If your business is interested in working with Trafford College and would like an initial conversation about the opportunities available, please contact Joan on 0161 886 7033.

Apprenticeships are changing the jobs market place he workplace is undergoing dramatic change and one of the biggest trends is the increasing use of Apprenticeships.

T

Dan said: “We are definitely seeing more people appreciating the value of someone who they can mould from day one. “The advantage with an Apprentice is that, rather than taking on someone who has been working elsewhere and maybe comes in with different practices, maybe even some bad habits, an employer can shape an Apprentice into the way they want to work. “It gives an employer free reign to develop someone who works their way rather than having to retrain them and more companies are seeing the benefit in that.” One of the biggest changes he is seeing is the expansion of sectors in which Apprentices are featuring significantly. Traditionally, the strong sectors have been automotive and engineering, hairdressing and childcare, all of which have used Apprentices for many years. However, they are now being joined by others. Dan said: “I think one of the things that is driving this trend is the transient nature of some sectors, where staff come and go with great regularity. “An example is retail. It is a rapidly changing sector and one in which turnover of staff has always been large.

“For instance, they are able to train them in the type of customer service that the shop follows.

“Retail is certainly one of the sectors where we are seeing a commitment to upskilling. Another is health and social care, where the arguments are the same as for retail. “Many people in the sector come to the job in their late twenties, early thirties, but do not always stay.

“ More stores, many of which are small businesses, are seeing the advantage in taking on a young person and ensuring that they attain a qualification and are trained in the way the company works.

“The possibilities of taking someone younger on and training them up is increasingly attractive to some providers. “We are also seeing Apprenticeships in other sectors, such as financial services. Obviously, a financial services company needs people with the right qualifications but they can see the value in taking someone on and helping them to learn. Financial services is a big area for Paragon.”

“More stores, many of which are small businesses, are seeing the advantage in taking on a young person and ensuring that they attain a qualification and are trained in the way the company works.

“This not only means that employers know what they are getting but may increase the chances of that person staying longer.

“

That is certainly the experience of Dan O’Keefe, Managing Director of apprenticeship provider Paragon Skills, who is seeing more and more businesses taking on Apprentices.

Running the Tokyo Marathon Chamber Chairman Tony Collier

hen I first got the idea to run the World Marathon Majors and raise funds for The Childrens Adventure Farm Trust www.caft.co.uk I didn’t expect that I would have to travel half way around the world to complete one of them but, in November 2012 at the cancelled New York marathon, it was announced that Tokyo would become the 6th and latest WMM.

W

This is a tough race to get a place with over 300,000 applications for the 30,000 ballot slots so that meant biting the bullet and spending a small fortune to buy a place through the UK’s Tokyo Travel Partner. As we were travelling that far we decided to make a holiday of it with a few extra nights in Tokyo followed by a stopover in Dubai for some winter sunshine. Five members of Styal Running Club in total decided to run the marathon and we had support from two Partners including my Wife Tracey and Andy’s Partner Liz who would be out on the course cheering us on. We were initially concerned that two massive snow storms each of the previous two weekends, which brought Tokyo to a halt and caused major problems throughout Japan, might threaten the marathon going ahead but thankfully it had largely cleared before we arrived. Tokyo hadn’t had snow for 13 years before these storms! So, 4 of us set off for a journey that, door to door, took 25 hours arriving in Tokyo fairly jaded late on Wednesday before the race on Sunday.

ChamberFocus

A trip to the Japanese Gardens in Shinjuku made us realise how much the snow had devastated the area with massive swathes of trees brought down by the weight of the snow and two thirds of the park being inaccessible. However there were still some stunning views with early cherry blossom.

Starting to feel nervous at the Expo

Thursday saw the other 3 arriving in time to head to the expo and pick up our race numbers. The expo was possibly the most bizarre that we’ve ever been too mainly due to the cultural differences between east and west. The marathon t-shirts given to all participants also seemed to be victims of cultural differences given that they were way too small for the western frame! Also a little disappointingly there were no jackets to buy which is also much different to other majors around the world. I still wear my Boston jacket with pride even a year after the race. Friday was to see us take a guided tour to Mount Fuji and the Hakone Ropeway, something that we had really been looking forward too. Unfortunately, the heavy snow fall meant that it wasn’t possible to access the area so a hastily re-arranged but excellent tour of Yokohama including the amazing Sankeien Gardens.

Saturday morning was the International Friendship Run, a gentle 5km jog parading in national costumes/flags etc. We all wore our Union Jacks or George flags and were a real hit with the Asian runners who all wanted photographs taken with us. We felt a bit like film stars for a few minutes. Sunday and its race day. Nerves stretched and a mega early start to have breakfast and let our stomachs settle. The start area was very congested with

Palace, Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Skytree and the Asakusa Gate/Temple so there would plenty to see although I actually don’t remember seeing very much of it at all! The conditions were perfect, a cool 8c, overcast and very little wind which would ultimately lead to new course records being set. It was clearly a day for good times to be recorded. Eventually the start gun sounded and two minutes later I crossed the start line. The first 6 miles were slightly downhill which made for a fast start, not an ideal way to run a marathon but I thought it best to make the most of it whilst I could. The first couple of miles were very frustrating as Japanese Federation Runners were allocated places in the first starting pen irrespective of their ability which caused serious congestion, bottleneck and a lot of weaving to get past slower runners. Again not ideal but eventually it did settle down although you have to ask the question why a runner in the first pen was walking after a mile!

Marathon starting area

36,000 runners all trying to drop their bags that would be waiting at the end of the race 26.2 miles away so that we would have warm clothes to change into. We were shepherded into our starting pens (that should have been graded according to ability) before the pens closed at 8.45 for a 9.10 start. After opening ceremonies it was then time to shed our outer clothing and pass to the army of volunteers who would eventually

make sure that the clothes were cleaned and distributed to the poor and homeless. The volunteers were called team smile and it was a very apt name as they were amazingly enthusiastic and smiled the whole day which we discovered was very much a Japanese trait. The course was designed to take in the key sites of Tokyo including the Imperial

The course contained two long out and back sections which meant that, unusually, we would see the leaders a couple of times and those Kenyans and Ethiopians just seem to glide along so gracefully.

MemberNews achieved a fantastic time of 4.10 despite also having been injured for a good chunk of the training time. Then it was back to the hotel to shower and wait for Charlie and Paula, who would finish in 5.17, and then celebrate with a vengeance. For Andy he had once again become a marathon runner who had completed all the World Majors, for Claire this would have been her 5th out of 6 had it not been for hurricane Sandy forcing the postponement of New York 2012. For me it was number 5 down and 1 to go and so, its onwards and upwards and back to training for the London Marathon on 13th April when the set would be complete. In the process I have managed to raise several thousand pounds for CAFT and donations can still be made and will be gratefully received right up to London in April at www.justgiving.com/tonycollier4caft. 3 tired but happy runners immediately post race

Then the amazing Japanese efficiency took over with the best organised finish I have ever experienced. We were crowned with our medals and given a finishers towel to keep us warm and then led into the warm exhibition area to pick up our bags and get changed into warm dry clothes. That wasn’t as easy as I had hoped as it was nearly impossible to bend the legs to get my track suit on but, after some contortions is was achieved. Then it was on to the family reunion area to meet Tracey and Liz and wait for Claire and Andy to finish. Claire got through in 3.43 and Andy, who only had a new hip 13 months earlier,

got me to the start so I was incredibly nervous about whether the injury would hold up. Starting fast probably wasn’t the greatest idea but thankfully the injury held up really well and I hit the half marathon mark in just over 1.40 with very consistent mile and 5km splits.

26

Reaching the 20 mile mark is always a concern for marathon runners with the dreaded wall beckoning but, thankfully, my hydration and nutrition strategy worked well and I passed fairly comfortably through 22 miles. At that point a couple of bridge crossings really sapped the energy and for the final three miles there was a definite slowing of pace. I knew by then though that I was going to finish and that the time would be quite quick but clearly a little short of a personal best. Turning the corner at 42km and seeing the sign that said 195m to go was amazing and I even managed to pick up the pace for a “sprint” finish to cross the line in 3.24.32, my second fastest ever marathon.

From Coma to Competition in 7 months International stars fly in to Altrincham physio firm

O

n 22nd September 2013, Simon Andrews crashed his bike at 200mph at Le Man’s 24 hour race. Superbikes In hospital, being totally sedentary was impacting on Simon both physically and mentally. He needed to get to the North West as soon as possible. “Making him feel good is as key a part of any athlete rehabilitation as the actual treatment is,” explained Harris & Ross’ high performance manager, Darren Roberts.

World renowned The reputation of Perform Harris & Ross is far-reaching, with athletes flying in from around the world to get fixed. Closer to home, Bex Wilson from Altrincham got in touch desperate to achieve her dream of being in Team GB’s Bobsleigh team at the Winter Olympics. Born with Congenital Hip Dysplasia, she had pain and stability problems from her right to left side. She spent 9 months working with the team on strength and conditioning. And she made it. “The outcome has surpassed anything I hoped for,” she said. “The facilities I can access at the Spire Manchester Hospital and the knowledge of the staff, is just the environment I need to be in. World class.”

He remembers everything. Right up until they put him into a medically induced coma. He’d broken both arms, both legs, all his ribs, back, had a collapsed lung and his liver failed. Forget career-threatening. This was lifethreatening. So, his team got on the phone to Perform Harris & Ross, which has a reputation of getting sports people back on their feet and back in action, against the odds.

“Simon still had a cast on one of his legs, which we took off straight away and replaced with a removable boot. The fractures were not going to heal if simply left, they needed encouragement.”

Available to all

Rehab included the flow pool and Alter G Anti-Gravity treadmill to condition him without impact.

When you arrive at Perform Harris & Ross, you have the reassurance that leading sports men and women trust the team with their careers.

Then the super bike arrived.

Perform Harris & Ross Professional athletes demand the best, it’s never a case of “if” they’ll be back to full fitness; it’s always “when”. Perform Harris & Ross was established on that very premise, but with one major difference: it provides the elite, professional care usually only reserved for Premiership footballers, to all patients. With 4 clinics in Altrincham, one in Hale, two centres of excellence in Manchester and Wilmslow and further clinics across the region, Perform is for Sport, Work and Lifestyle.

You deserve the very best and now it’s on your doorstep.

Just 15 weeks after lying in a coma in France, Simon was deadlifting 110kg and squatting his own bodyweight. Will he make the 2014 season? He’s already on the starting line.

“We want to find the source of the problem. We treat the day-to-day pain, then analyse how it started in the first place. We need to make sure it goes away and doesn’t come back.” It matters not whether you’re the World Champion, you’re planning a ski trip or you’re struggling with a niggling injury or bad back… you’ll get the same treatment, right here in Altrincham, Hale, Wilmslow and at Spire Manchester Hospital. Perform Harris and Ross www.harrisandross.co.uk www.spiremanchester.com Simon Andrews died on 19 May 2014. Our thoughts and condolences go out to his friends and family.

ChamberFocus

The partnership between Spire Manchester Hospital and Harris & Ross means that we have prompt access to diagnostics, scans and specialists throughout the medical spectrum.

Clearly for his job, Simon needed to get in to the racing crouch position, so some of his physio was done while he was on the bike. This may seem extreme, but for elite athletes, this is all about getting back to sport.

“We have access to the best diagnostics available, top surgeons and experts in almost every field. Our patients don’t get sent from one specialist to another, they get treated by a team. Just like we do in professional sport,” explained director, Jeff Ross.

Chris ethos to ensuring client satisfaction is by making accurate and rapid decisions, often providing clients with funds in 24 – 48 hours at market leading rates.

The book is aimed at practitioners with small to medium sized businesses as their client base, as well as accountants in industry and commerce, offering guidance on new accounts rules introduced by the Financial Reporting Council in 2013.

Steve said “The changes to UK accountancy are the biggest in its history and LWA are already wellprepared to make sure that our clients’ transition over to the new standards will be as smooth as possible. 24 Hours with... Jake Harrop Managing Director — Safetynet IT

anaging the work/life balance

M

Jake is Managing Director of Altrincham-based Safetynet IT, which started trading in 2007 and which has grown steadily in that time. Today employing three full-time staff, most of the IT support company’s clients are in the Altrincham area. Jake, who has a three year old son and whose wife is due to give birth to their second child in April, said: “I tend to wake up at 6.15 in the morning when our three-year-old comes into our bedroom with his toys. “I have a family breakfast at 7am then check my emails at home before going into the office for 8-8.30. It’s only a five minute commute from where we live. “We have a flexible shift pattern and the staff will come in between 8.30 and 10 and we set the day up and plan what we are going to do. Very often I will go out to see clients after that. “I tend to be back in the office in the afternoon. I am 80 per cent hands-on with the work, with the remainder focused on the strategy side, and there is always something to do. “For example, the other day we received a call from a client on a Tuesday, who said they had brought in large investment which meant they wanted to move offices by Friday and could we handle the IT? “We work both on site and remotely, from our own offices, and although we plan projects, we do need to be able to react quickly as well.

“I finish at 5 in the afternoon and go home for tea with the family at 5.30. I am absolutely adamant about that. “It would be easy to work all the hours there are then spend the evening checking emails but I think that the life/work balance is so important if you are running a business, especially, as in my case, if you have a three-year-old and another on the way. “The job will consume you if you let it and you do see people who work all the hours then burn out, become ill or drift out of the business. “I have always believed that maintaining the work/life balance makes much more sense, not just for the individual but also for the business. “Once your business becomes established, you can pretty much plan the amount of work you bring in and it is important to make sure that you can handle what you have.”

“I finish at 5 in the afternoon and go home for tea with the family at 5.30. I am absolutely adamant about that.

“

For Jake Harrop, hard work is crucial to the success of his business but so is striking a work/life balance and that tends to shape his day.

Funding growth for UK farmers Agricultural Relationship Manager at Farmland Finance, discusses why now is the time LforauratheMorgan, agricultural community to utilise their farms and land for future growth

ChamberFocus

It’s been a tough few years for the farming community, the prolonged winters, unseasonal spring snow, flooding and the horsemeat scandal have hit stocks and crops hard. Further strain has been created by the big lenders tightening their belts, with some, such as Yorkshire Bank and ING, exiting the market completely.

34

However, the rising value of farmland across the UK provides farmers with an opportunity. Figures from the Royal Institution of Charted Surveyors (RICS) show the price of agricultural land has more than trebled in less than a decade. According to RICS, farmland in August 2013 cost an average of £7,440 an acre, compared to £2,400 an acre in 2004. The North West of England is now the most expensive place to farm in the UK; land prices rose by 35 per cent in the first six months of 2013.

Reaping rewards from the land Lots of the farmers we talk to want to buy more acreage, diversify into farm shops, utilise disused farm buildings for conversion or even develop renewable energy schemes. This means funding is needed for a variety of purposes, that’s why we don’t have any restrictions on what the funds are being raised for. Farmland Finance have been working with a growing number of innovative farmers and landowners who are capitalising on high land values and raising funds against existing land to inject capital into their business. We will also lend for investments such as new machinery, livestock or building work. So how does Farmland Finance work? We specialise in assisting the rural community direct, or through their professional advisers, with all aspects of

short term lending secured against agricultural property or land. We provide fast and flexible short term bridging funding, usually up to 12 months, to your farming clients looking to expand or buy land as well as for those looking to diversify. Farmland Finance will lend against most types of agricultural property and land; including equestrian, country homes with agricultural restrictions, working and non-working farms, farm shops and all general types of rural properties. For more information, or to speak to an agricultural relationship manager at Farmland Finance, visit: www.farmlandfinance.co.uk.
