Ask the expert

What do the Employment Rights Act changes mean for small businesses? The Employment Rights Act reforms are being described as the biggest shake-up of employment law in a generation. Several important changes have already come into effect, including Statutory Sick Pay becoming available from the first day of sickness absence and the introduction of day-one rights for Paternity Leave and Unpaid Parental Leave. Looking ahead, employers will face stronger obligations around preventing workplace harassment and significant changes to unfair dismissal rules. For small businesses, this means that good people management, accurate record keeping and well-trained managers will become more important than ever.

How will the changes to Statutory Sick Pay affect my business? For many small employers, this is one of the most immediate and practical changes. Employees who qualify for Statutory Sick Pay are now entitled to receive it from the first day of sickness absence, rather than after a waiting period. In addition, more employees qualify than previously because the lower earnings threshold has been removed. While this supports workers who are genuinely unwell, employers may see an increase in sickness-related costs. Businesses should focus on strengthening their absence management procedures. Return-to-work meetings, clear reporting processes and regular monitoring of absence patterns can help ensure issues are identified and addressed early.

What do the new harassment rules mean in practice? This is an area that every employer should take seriously. The government is increasing expectations on employers to actively prevent harassment rather than simply responding to complaints after an incident has occurred. From October 2026, employers will be required to take "all reasonable steps" to prevent workplace sexual harassment. There will also be increased liability relating to harassment by third parties, such as customers, clients, contractors and visitors. For small businesses, this means reviewing policies, providing training, putting up appropriate signage and ensuring managers understand how to handle concerns appropriately. Many employers assume they are protected because they have a policy in place. However, regulators and tribunals increasingly expect businesses to demonstrate that the policy is actively communicated, understood and implemented throughout the organisation.

Have a question about how the Employment Rights Act reforms could affect your business? Do you need help in making sure your business is compliant? Do you need help with management training?

David Hudson Owner and Managing Director The HR Dept Clapham The HR Dept Highbury & Islington

I've heard employees will be able to claim unfair dismissal much sooner. Should employers be concerned? Currently, most employees need two years' continuous service before they can bring an ordinary unfair dismissal claim. Under the government's reforms, this qualifying period is expected to reduce significantly, This places greater emphasis on getting recruitment decisions right and managing performance effectively from the outset. Businesses will need clear job descriptions, structured induction processes, regular probation reviews and accurate records of performance discussions. You can no longer rely on informal conversations. If an employee is struggling, employers will need to demonstrate that expectations were clear, support was provided and concerns were addressed appropriately.

What is the most important thing small business owners should do now? My advice is simple: don't wait. Review your employment contracts, employee handbook and HR policies to ensure they remain compliant and fit for purpose. Make sure your managers understand the upcoming changes and their responsibilities. Look at how you record absences, performance issues, disciplinary matters and employee communications. The Employment Rights Act reforms are likely to increase expectations on employers, but they also provide an excellent opportunity to strengthen workplace culture, improve consistency and reduce risk. Most tribunal claims arise not because employers intentionally break the law, but because processes are inconsistent or poorly managed. Businesses that take proactive steps today will be in a much stronger position tomorrow. The key is planning ahead, seeking expert advice where needed and viewing compliance as a business investment rather than a burden.

Welcome to the Autumn edition of Business Connexions Inside: the official magazine for Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce

After a scorching summer and our traditional August break from events, there is a real sense of momentum as we head into autumn. While our events calendar may have paused for a few weeks, things certainly didn't stop behind the scenes, and we've been busy putting together an exciting programme to take us through the autumn and winter. It was wonderful to kick things off with the return of our ever-popular Earlsfield Network, where, as always, we welcomed a great mix of familiar faces and many people joining us for the first time. We've also had one of our more unusual Chamber experiences – a 4am behind-the-scenes visit to New Covent Garden Market. With around 130 businesses collectively generating more than £1 billion in annual turnover, it was a rare opportunity to see this extraordinary supply chain in action at the time much of London is still asleep – from the 205-metre Buyers' Walk and wholesale fruit and vegetable trade to the Flower Market opening for business. And there is plenty more to come. Our programme includes an afternoon tea for our Women in Business community at Audley Villages, a Patron cheese and wine tasting event at Avery Wandsworth Common Care Home, and an AI vs Human event with South Thames College, amongst many other opportunities to connect, learn and build relationships.

I'm also particularly pleased that we're bringing back our Building Wandsworth Network for businesses working across property and construction. We're starting with an online forum to hear directly from the sector about what businesses want and need from the network, before building the programme from there. And there may be another new initiative beginning to take shape behind the scenes too – but more on that in due course!

Autumn is traditionally one of the busiest and most productive periods in business, and there is certainly plenty happening across Wandsworth Chamber. I hope we'll see many of you at our events over the coming months – whether you're a familiar face or joining us for the very first time.

There are changes within the Chamber team as well. As Alexandra Wyatt returns from maternity leave, I'd like to give a final, heartfelt thank you to Carla Salas for stepping in and doing such a fantastic job, not only keeping our Chamber activities moving but helping us deliver another successful Wandsworth Business Awards. It has been an absolute pleasure working with her.

Warm wishes,

AUTUMN ECONOMY: Wandsworth positioned to capitalise on London's next growth chapter 4 | Business Connexions

The UK Autumn Budget 2026 will be delivered on Wednesday 28 October by Chancellor John Healey, marking the first Budget under Prime Minister Andy Burnham. The Chancellor has emphasised fiscal discipline, stability and devolving financial power to local authorities.

Key confirmed measures include a £12,000 Cash ISA cap from April 2027, a 2% rise in tax on rental profits, pensions becoming subject to inheritance tax, and a “mansion tax”. With the Autumn Budget approaching, businesses across London will be assessing what the Chancellor's plans mean for investment, growth and confidence. The signs from Government suggest a continued emphasis on economic stability, innovation, infrastructure and regional empowerment, creating a positive backdrop for businesses in Wandsworth and across the capital. For Wandsworth, the timing could not be better. Already one of London's most dynamic boroughs, Wandsworth is emerging as a key growth location, benefitting from significant regeneration, major transport connections,

world-class business clusters and ambitious housing development programmes.

operating within health, research and technology sectors.

The recently published London Growth Plan highlighted Wandsworth as a major opportunity area for investment, innovation and job creation. Several locations within the borough were identified as strategically important to London's future economic success, including Battersea, Nine Elms, Clapham Junction and Wandsworth Town Centre.

Meanwhile, the ongoing transformation of Nine Elms remains one of Europe's most ambitious regeneration programmes, creating new commercial space, homes and infrastructure that continue to attract both investment and talent.

Particular attention was given to Battersea's growing reputation as an international hub for creative industries and innovation. Home to major employers, design firms and technology businesses, the area continues to attract significant investment and skilled workers. The recognition of St George's Hospital and surrounding institutions as a potential life sciences cluster also presents exciting opportunities for businesses

Government economic announcements throughout 2026 have consistently emphasised investment-led growth. National priorities include infrastructure development, advanced industries, innovation, skills and productivity improvements, all areas that play to Wandsworth's strengths. Businesses will be looking for policies that provide stability and encourage long-term investment decisions. Continued support for transport infrastructure, skills funding and high-growth sectors could be particularly Business Connexions | 5

Across the region of SW London, we know that there is a large and rising number of young people outside employment and education, struggling to enter the workforce successfully. This appears to be holding back the success of this generation and stifling growth in some ways while many employers are hiring cautiously or not at all. We are seeing significant Government investment in provision to address this issue and to make sure more young people are better prepared for the reality of the workplace, so we are fortunate to be able to expand and develop our activities to do this work while needing more and more willing employer partners to help us deliver great outcomes for our students.

beneficial for London boroughs with strong business ecosystems such as Wandsworth. The Government's stated ambition to move economic opportunity beyond Westminster and strengthen local growth strategies may also lead to greater flexibility for local authorities and regional partnerships to shape economic priorities. One of Wandsworth's biggest economic strengths is the scale of investment already under way. The borough continues to deliver major housing and regeneration schemes, with hundreds of new homes progressing across a range of developments. Significant investment is also being directed towards neighbourhood renewal, public realm improvements and transport infrastructure, helping create the environment businesses need to thrive. Wandsworth Council has also committed substantial funding to upgrading roads and pavements across the borough, recognising that high-quality infrastructure is essential to maintaining economic vitality and supporting local enterprises. For the business community, these projects bring more than construction activity. They create additional footfall, attract new residents, improve connectivity and encourage longer-term commercial investment. Wandsworth's combination of excellent transport links, highly skilled workforce, growing innovation clusters and ambitious

regeneration strategy places it in a strong position as the UK economy enters its next phase. While national economic challenges remain, there is considerable momentum behind London's growth agenda. For businesses operating in Wandsworth, the outlook is supported by significant local investment, growing sector strengths and a borough that is increasingly recognised as a key contributor to the capital's future success.

Innovation, skills and the future economy Another reason for optimism is Wandsworth's ability to attract the industries that are expected to drive future economic growth. From creative and digital businesses in Battersea to emerging life sciences opportunities linked to St George's, the borough is increasingly becoming a destination for high-value sectors that bring skilled jobs, investment and innovation. The presence of major global businesses alongside a thriving community of entrepreneurs and SMEs creates a powerful ecosystem where collaboration and growth can flourish. As Government policy continues to focus on productivity, technology and advanced industries, Wandsworth is well placed to benefit from both public and private sector investment. Skills development will also play a crucial role in maintaining that momentum. Businesses across London are increasingly seeking employees with expertise in digital technology, sustainability, healthcare and engineering. Continued investment in

high‑quality support continues to grow. As a country, we have an ageing population – people who need care, and who deserve the very best. For many, our community will be their final home, so it must be a place that offers exceptional support, comfort and dignity. It’s also a sector that fluctuates throughout the year, with seasonal pressures having a real impact on services and staffing.

training, apprenticeships and education partnerships will help ensure local employers can access the talent they need to expand and compete. Importantly, Wandsworth's appeal extends beyond business alone. Investment in housing, public spaces, transport connections and community infrastructure is helping create an attractive environment in which people want to live and work. This combination of economic opportunity and quality of life is becoming a significant competitive advantage in attracting both employers and skilled professionals. For local businesses the economy continues to bring a mixed picture – while there is much to be encouraged by and be positive about, there are also challenges. Sam Kirwan, General Manager of Chamber Patron Wandsworth Common Care Home, said: “Health and social care is a challenging sector, but it’s also one where the need for

“Inflation is another significant challenge, and it’s expected to rise further in the coming months. Higher costs for everyday goods, services and operational essentials directly affect how we run our business. All of this Image: pixabay places pressure on providers like us, as we work to absorb rising costs while continuing to deliver the standard of care people rely on and deserve.” As the Autumn Budget approaches, Wandsworth enters the next chapter from a position of strength, with many of the foundations for future growth already firmly in place.

Wandsworth has an incredibly diverse and ambitious business community, from growing SMEs to global organisations. The investment and regeneration across the borough creates real opportunity, but it is businesses that turn that into jobs, innovation and growth. Our role at Wandsworth Chamber is to ensure they are connected, supported and have a strong voice as the borough evolves. Beverley Corson, CEO, Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce

The Autumn Budget will undoubtedly generate headlines, but for businesses in Wandsworth the bigger story may be the opportunities already taking shape locally. From Battersea's emergence as a global innovation destination to the continued transformation of Nine Elms and growing investment in infrastructure and housing, the borough is demonstrating exactly the kind of economic dynamism the government wants to encourage. For local businesses, the message is clear: while economic conditions may continue to evolve, Wandsworth remains firmly positioned as one of London's most exciting places to invest, innovate and grow.

Joining the Chamber means joining a community Sam Kirwan is General Manager of Patron member Wandsworth Common Care Home – Avery Healthcare’s 97-room senior living community in Wandsworth where luxury living, compassionate care and a supportive, peoplefocused culture go hand-in-hand. She tells Karen McLauchlan why being part of the Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce truly matters. 8 | Business Connexions

Why and when did you join the Chamber? We joined the Chamber because we wanted to become more involved in the local business community and build stronger relationships with other organisations in Wandsworth and across South-west London. As a care home, working closely with local businesses, healthcare providers and community groups is really important to us. The Chamber gave us a great way to connect with people, learn what’s happening locally and raise awareness of the work we do.

How do you feel being a Patron at the Chamber has helped your business? Being a Patron has given us much more visibility within the local business community. We’ve met a lot of great people through Chamber events and networking opportunities and it has helped us build valuable relationships.

Patron Focus | For us, it’s not always about direct business opportunities. It’s also about being part of the community, sharing ideas, learning from other business leaders and helping promote the importance of health and social care in the area. The support and connections we’ve made through the Chamber have been really valuable.

What advice would you give to new Chamber members? Get involved as much as you can. Go to events, introduce yourself to people and don’t be afraid to start conversations. The more people get to know you and your business, the more value you’ll get from your membership. The Chamber is full of people who genuinely want to support each other, so make the most of the opportunities available and focus on building real relationships.

What are the biggest challenges affecting your business? How do you think Chamber can best assist you with these challenges? Like many care providers, one of our biggest challenges is recruiting and retaining good people. The health and social care sector continues to face workforce pressures, alongside rising costs and increasing demand for highquality care.

The Chamber can help by continuing to bring businesses together, sharing knowledge and creating opportunities for collaboration. It also plays an important role in representing local businesses and helping decision-makers understand the challenges organisations like ours are facing.

What are your plans for the future growth of your business? Our focus is on continuing to provide outstanding care while growing in a sustainable way.

We want to keep investing in our team, develop new services where there is a need and strengthen our links with the local community. Wandsworth Common Care Home, based at 94 North Side, Wandsworth Common, opened six years ago and is a purpose-built care home comprising 97 private apartments across five floors. Who Supports the Managers? Equipping Leaders for the Conversations that Matter Most In workplaces where teams support vulnerable clients and customers, managers are often expected to navigate some of the most complex human situations imaginable. Every day, these managers support colleagues who are exposed to distressing stories, emotionally charged situations and people facing incredibly difficult circumstances. At the same time, they're expected to manage workloads, address performance concerns, navigate change, meet targets and maintain professional boundaries. It's a lot to carry.

The truth is, many managers have never been taught how to hold these conversations with confidence. They worry about saying the wrong thing, missing signs that someone is struggling, or appearing unsupportive. The result can be managers who feel isolated, under pressure and overwhelmed by the situations they're trying to support. Our bespoke manager development workshops are designed to help. Through interactive, practical sessions, we equip managers with the skills, confidence and frameworks they need to support their teams effectively whilst protecting their own wellbeing.

Aligned with the HSE Management Standards for work-related stress, our approach helps managers understand how their day-to-day actions can reduce psychosocial risks and create healthier working environments. While the foundations remain evidence-based and practical, every workshop is tailored to reflect the unique pressures, scenarios and culture of the teams we work with. When managers feel equipped and supported, they are better able to lead with confidence, strengthen their teams and create environments where both colleagues and the people they serve can thrive.

CAN AI REPLACE A LAWYER FOR STARTUPS?

Law firm Russell-Cooke explores the situations where AI can be used effectively, who is liable if AI makes a mistake and when to instruct a lawyer It is easy to see the appeal of using AI tools when trying to grow a business with limited resources. Lawyers can be very expensive and few startups have a big legal budget, if any. However, whilst there are benefits to using AI for your business, there are also times when using a lawyer will be more valuable in the long-run.

When can I use AI instead of a lawyer? AI is a powerful, cost-efficient tool which can provide instant access to information. We have seen startups use it really effectively in the following ways: •

•

•

Understanding basic legal concepts. If you have never used lawyers before, AI may be helpful in a similar way to a search engine for understanding some basic legal concepts. However, it is always worth checking sources and verifying important information, as AI can sometimes hallucinate and produce inaccurate answers. Summarising documents. Legal documents can be long and dense. AI can also be useful for summarising material into a shorter form using non-legal language. However, ensure that you do not include any personal or confidential information in your prompts. For important documents, exercise caution, as key details may be missed. Comparing documents. In the same way AI can summarise documents, it can also quickly compare documents. However, the results should always be reviewed carefully. Remember, don’t include personal or confidential information and don’t assume the results are comprehensive.

Ben Voller Associate +44(0)20 7440 4810 Ben.Voller@russell-cooke.co.uk

•

A sounding board and ideas-generator. We have all been there; sometimes you just don’t know exactly what you need. AI can provide a useful sounding board for generating ideas and identifying questions to ask your lawyers.‌

Can I use AI for drafting legal documents? We wouldn’t recommend it. Using an AI-generated legal document can expose you to significant risk. Whilst the software may understand your prompt, it is unlikely to understand your business and the commercial landscape in which it operates and may be unaware of key human-level psychological or political judgements about the approach to counter-parties.

Defective legal documents can expose you or your business to claims. The higher the value and the longer the term of the agreement, the greater the risks and liability.

When should I use a lawyer for my startup? We recommend seeking the advice of a lawyer: •

For important decisions or documents. If the stakes are high or you are taking on legal liability, you need a lawyer. For example, when entering into a high value contract.

•

If there are legal complexities. Some documents need to be drafted in such a way that reflects a complex legislative background. For example, EMI option schemes and share buybacks have strict statutory regimes. If missed or misjudged, this can invalidate the documents or result in tax implications.

•

For drafting binding legal documents. Binding legal documents create obligations and liabilities on both parties. If you want an arrangement to have legal effect, such as the agreement between you and your cofounder as to who owns how many shares in your company and what happens if one of you leaves, this should be overseen by a lawyer.

•

For regulated advice. AI-generated advice should not be relied on for regulated activities and industries. Here, it is not just about knowing the rules, but about how to apply them to ensure you are compliant. A lawyer will be able to assist, not only in understanding the rules, but helping apply them specifically to your business.

Legal documents are often complex and rarely offer a ‘one size fits all’ solution. Documents that have not undergone legal review may contain errors, missing clauses, or unenforceable provisions.

What are the risks of using AI for drafting legal documents? The primary risk of using AI to draft legal documents is that a contract is incorrect or unenforceable. Either of these may have significant financial or reputational repercussions. Incorrect drafting may also damage credibility with investors or customers and could even jeopardise a deal.

Am I liable if AI makes a mistake? Yes, you can be. AI cannot provide regulated legal advice and you certainly won’t be able to blame AI if things go wrong. Lawyers, by contrast, are professionally accountable for their advice.

Local sporting heroes celebrated at Wandsworth Moves Together Awards 2026 The athletes, coaches, volunteers, schools and community organisations helping Wandsworth become a healthier, more active and connected borough have been celebrated at the Wandsworth Moves Together Awards 2026. The winners were revealed at a special ceremony on Wednesday 16 September at the Council’s Civic Suite, hosted by Wandsworth resident and film director Fredi Nwaka. The awards recognised achievements ranging from grassroots volunteering and inclusive community activity to coaching and sporting excellence. This year’s winners demonstrate the different ways people across Wandsworth are helping residents of all ages, abilities and backgrounds enjoy the physical, mental and social benefits of being active.

“These awards celebrate the people whose dedication, passion and commitment make such a positive difference across Wandsworth. Whether they are coaching the next generation, organising accessible community activities, volunteering behind the scenes or achieving sporting success, every winner is helping make Wandsworth a healthier, more connected and more active place to live.”

Awardees, recognised for achievements throughout 2025, included everyone from weekend volunteers to internationally recognised athletes, showing the breadth of ways people keep moving and stay active in Wandsworth. Councillor Ethan Brooks, Cabinet Member for Environment, who presented the Outstanding Achievement Award said: “Wandsworth is so fortunate to have an extraordinary network of volunteers, coaches, clubs, schools, community organisations and talented athletes that make our borough a standout place for sport in the country.

The Mayor of Wandsworth, who presented the Mayor’s Award said: “The Wandsworth Moves Together Awards recognise individuals and organisations who embody the very best of community spirit. “It was inspiring to hear their stories and celebrate the many people encouraging residents of all ages and backgrounds to get involved, stay active and support one another.” The awards form part of Wandsworth Council’s wider commitment to encouraging more people to move, improving access to opportunities and tackling inequalities in participation. The full list of winners can be found at: www.wandsworth.gov.uk/leisure-and-culture/ sport-and-fitness/wandsworth-movestogether-awards/

Council sets out action to tackle congestion and get Wandsworth moving again After a summer of making initial changes and improvements and researching solutions, Wandsworth Council is laying out the latest transport progress and a range of new measures to tackle congestion, reduce disruption from roadworks and improve journeys in the borough. Lane Rental Scheme In new efforts to tackle transport challenges across the borough, the council is proposing a new Lane Rental Scheme on our roads, which would help reduce disruption caused by utility company roadworks. We want to encourage better planning of utility works and reduce the impact of roadworks on traffic, local businesses and residents so under the proposed scheme, utility companies undertaking works on Wandsworth's busiest roads would be incentivised to complete

14 | Business Connexions

those works more efficiently and minimise disruption. Companies that occupy the highway for longer periods, particularly during peak times, could incur additional charges. Meanwhile, the council is continuing to invest in maintaining highways and transport infrastructure while working closely with partners including TfL, Network Rail and utility companies to improve public transport, reduce disruption and improve coordination on major works.

'Encourage faster roadworks' Cllr Nick Austin, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “Residents are clear to us that they want to see us take decisive action to reduce congestion and minimise the disruption caused by roadworks, and we are responding to that challenge. “We’ve developed new proposals for a Lane Rental Scheme which will encourage faster roadworks and we can hold utility companies to account on behalf of residents when works go on too long and cause unnecessary disruption. “Congestion in the Putney and Albert Bridge areas is rightly causing residents concern and frustration, which we get. These are complex challenges and there is no quick-fix solution, so we’re getting on with a series of road changes

and adjustments - as well as pressing TfL to improve junctions and traffic light signals. “We have to make difficult decisions to keep our borough moving, so will use our resources carefully, continuing long-term investment in the borough’s essential road network while keeping residents updated on how we're doing.” The council has pledged to do what it can to keep traffic moving, improve the management of roadworks and support a more reliable transport network for residents, businesses and visitors. Wider transport work under way includes completion soon on essential improvement works to Wandsworth Bridge, action to widen the road to address congestion in Putney, and working closely with TfL to improve traffic management around Albert Bridge which is currently closed. Finally, the council is planning to introduce a Fair Use Charter for Wandsworth to better manage hire e-bike use and parking which is a cause of regular complaint. The charter will help ensure that services can operate to the benefit of users whilst minimising poor behaviour and harmful impact on other highway users. A dedicated Council enforcement team will be set up to patrol the borough and known hotspots, removing e-bikes causing problems.

Battersea Power Station and Wandsworth Council granted planning consent for 200 new council homes Planning permission has been granted for 200 new high-quality council homes to be delivered in partnership by Battersea Power Station and Wandsworth Council, marking an exciting step forward in the development of the 42-acre riverside neighbourhood. Planning permission has been granted for 200 new high-quality council homes to be delivered in partnership by Battersea Power Station and Wandsworth Council, marking an exciting step forward in the development of the 42-acre riverside neighbourhood. The new homes, which are part of the council’s Homes for Wandsworth programme, will be built on a currently undeveloped brownfield plot within Phase 5 of the Battersea Power Station masterplan, to the east of the Grade II* listed Power Station. Available for local people, including families at social rent levels, the well-designed homes, operated by Wandsworth Council, will mark a significant step towards tackling the housing crisis and creating mixed, balanced communities across the borough. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with anticipated completion in 2029. The new homes form part of the future phases at Battersea Power Station, which have the potential to deliver up to 3.2 million sq ft of residential, commercial, cultural and leisure space across the remaining 16-acres of undeveloped brownfield land. With approximately half of the regeneration project now complete, strategic urban design planner, Studio Egret West, has been appointed to evolve Rafael Viñoly’s original masterplan, first conceived over 15 years ago, to respond to changes in expectations around lifestyle, leisure and workspace. The 200 new council homes being delivered by Wandsworth Council and Battersea Power Station have been designed by Peckham-based architecture studio, Dowen Farmer Architects. The multi-layered residential building features generous communal gardens and an expansive south facing roof garden with views across the city. Linking back to the neighbouring Power Station, vertical detailing and brick lattice reference the iconic brickwork of the Grade II*

CGIs of the new high-quality council homes that will be built in partnership with Wandsworth Council and Battersea Power Station listed landmark, complemented by a racing green base which defines the community uses. Contributing to the vibrant mix of public amenities at Battersea Power Station, the ground level will feature family-friendly, sustainable public spaces, a tree-lined street, and opportunities for local businesses, leisure and hospitality venues to flourish, helping to drive inclusive economic growth and create a lively, community near the riverfront. In partnership with Battersea Power Station, the council is working with the Greater London Authority (GLA) to bring forward a scheme that delivers on shared ambitions for fair growth and faster delivery of social housing at one of London’s most iconic regeneration sites. The project will be financed within the council’s existing Housing Revenue Account and supported by GLA grant funding. Deputy Mayor of London for Housing and Residential Development, Tom Copley, said: “I am delighted planning permission has been granted for 200 new high-quality council homes in Wandsworth, which marks an important milestone in the delivery of a vibrant new neighbourhood at Battersea Power Station. “The Mayor and I are proud to be working with Battersea Power Station and Wandsworth Council, providing investment to deliver social housing at one of London’s most iconic regeneration sites, as we work to build a fairer, more prosperous London for everyone.” Cllr Robert Morritt, Leader of Wandsworth Council said: "This decision kick-starts an exciting time for Wandsworth as we move at pace to deliver more high-quality homes for rent or sale across our borough. Working in partnership with Battersea Power Station, this well-designed development of 200 properties shows our commitment to good growth and building homes for local people."

James Saunders, CEO at Battersea Power Station Development Company, said: “These new homes represent another important milestone in the delivery of our vision for Battersea Power Station, and we’re delighted to be bringing them forward in partnership with Wandsworth Council and the GLA. Alongside today’s announcement, we continue to make strong progress across the wider development, with construction on the final section of Electric Boulevard, our pedestrianised high street, beginning soon. Following our recent public consultation on proposals for the future phases, we will be submitting a Section 73 application later this month, helping to ensure this vibrant riverside neighbourhood continues to evolve, with a thriving town centre at its heart that serves the local community while attracting Londoners and visitors from further afield.” Battersea Power Station is a vibrant new neighbourhood centred around the restored Grade II* listed landmark and now home to over 170 shops, restaurants, cafes and leisure experiences. Connected to Central London by a new Zone 1 London Underground station, and having welcomed over 40 million visitors since opening to the public in October 2022, Battersea Power Station plays a key role in supporting the economy, jobs and livelihoods of residents across the London Borough of Wandsworth. Following decades of failed attempts, the transformation of Battersea Power Station has been accomplished by its shareholders; S P Setia, Sime Darby Property, and the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF). In 2019, Malaysia’s leading fund management companies Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) and EPF became the long-term commercial asset holders of the Power Station, reflecting their long-term commitment to the project.

Homegrown Energy through smart installations This summer’s run of heatwaves – with temperatures regularly breaking the 30C barrier – has made climate change an urgent everyday reality. That urgency extends to how we power and heat our homes, where London-based expert Peter Hulston says a “step-change” in technology and adoption is now changing things for the better.

With more than 30 years in the heating business, Heatility’s Peter Hulston explains to Karen McLauchlan why rising temperatures and hotter summers mean we all need to make the leap to a greener, more climatefriendly home. 18 | Business Connexions

Peter is owner of London-based NP Trade, which trades as Heatility. With more than three decades of experience in heating systems – from gas boilers to renewable energy, battery storage, home energy management systems and air conditioning – he has seen the industry evolve at pace. Today, he says the next wave of home‑heating technology will be electric, efficient and intelligently managed. Air source heat pumps are often discussed as futuristic or niche. In reality, they are a mature heating system being widely adopted across the UK and Europe. Millions of households globally already rely on them for efficient, everyday climate control – something Peter knows first-hand.

He has specialised in heat pumps for more than 15 years. The systems extract heat energy from the outside air – even when it’s cold – and move it indoors to heat homes and water. “I’m a lifelong learner,” he says, describing the pivot he made from boilers to heat pumps. “It wasn’t just about retraining; it was a step up in design and systems thinking.” Advanced courses covering everything from thermodynamics to heat-loss calculations followed. The result? Heatility now delivers tailored, whole-home designs to residential and business customers across London and the South-east with Peter accredited with the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS), the sector quality standard for low carbon energy technologies and installation companies. Peter says the market for green home technology is now building real momentum. High electricity prices, surging demand for eco friendly homes and major public investment – including the government’s £15 billion Warm Homes Plan – are accelerating change. And with up to £9,000 available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme in England and Wales, heat pumps are becoming a far more attractive option.

Big Interview |

Heatility invests time upfront to educate customers – where the outdoor unit sits, how it operates and how it behaves day-to-day. Remote monitoring can flag anomalies before they become breakdowns. Heatility is also making it easier for people to make the switch by offering low-interest finance for heat pump installations that can spread the cost over 12 years with servicing and breakdown cover included. “Today’s customers are very different to those 15 years ago,” Peter says. “They are much more aware and educated about what a heat pump does – and more conscious of the need to do more in relation to climate change. Peter is also looking forward to a growth in airto-air heat pump usage – systems that supply warm and cold air and can serve as an upgrade to night storage heaters. The government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme is offering £2,500 off the cost and installation of an air-to-air heat pump, a technology that can provide winter heating and summer cooling and help households stay comfortable year round. The heat pump story has moved on too. Where older models struggled to deliver higher flow temperatures, many modern systems can now reach up to 75C, bringing them closer to direct boiler replacements and unlocking more retrofit options. Heatility invests time upfront to educate customers – where the outdoor unit sits,

how it operates and how it behaves day-today. Remote monitoring can flag anomalies before they become breakdowns.

“We’ve got customers with near net-zero costs over the year,” says Peter. “A few even receive credits.”

Hotter, more intense summers are becoming the norm as the climate shifts – and with that comes a surge in demand for air conditioning. As an experienced aircon installer, Peter says Heatility is already taking bookings ahead of next summer, as households prepare for what is likely to be another scorching season.

Heatility’s next chapter is about thoughtful scale. Peter currently leads a vetted network of specialist subcontractors and is moving towards a larger in-house engineering team to meet demand while preserving the firm’s customer-centric ethos.

Based in London and serving the capital, Surrey, Kent and parts of the South-east, Heatility’s roots are in the residential market with a growing commercial customer base including rooftop solar and battery storage. Heatility also specialises in installing ground source heat pumps, another renewable heating and cooling system. At the heat of Peter’s vision is a “golden triangle”: solar and PV to generate, batteries to store and a heat pump to convert electricity to heat and hot water – and increasingly cooling. Add a home energy management system to orchestrate it all, and households can change the way they pay for power and how they impact the planet.

The business continues to invest in training, accreditation and emerging tech as the pace of system development accelerates to meet growing demand. “We have a phrase ‘homegrown energy’ in the business,” says Peter. “We all need to take ownership of our energy generation and become more careful about how much we use. “This summer’s heatwaves has shown just how fast the climate is changing – and how important it is that we all play a part in protecting the planet. “We help people plan their heating journey. Done right you’ll end up with a quieter, more comfortable home, lower bills and meaningful step towards net zero.

FUTURE-PROOFING YOUR HOME The Path to True Energy Independence

The dramatic shift in our climate, coupled with escalating energy costs, has transformed how we think about our homes. It’s no longer just about paying the monthly bill; it’s about control, sustainability, and long-term security. For many, the goal is clear: to become energy self-reliant. This is known as a full-stack home energy platform - but think of it as your own domestic energy eco-system. The Roadmap to Independence

Transitioning to an energy-neutral home is a journey, not a switch. It requires an incremental, engineered approach focused on a single outcome: reducing your reliance on expensive hydrocarbons while significantly lowering your bills. Step 1: The Essentials

The journey starts with the basics. Home insulation, double glazing, and optimized appliance usage - combined with ensuring you are on the best possible deal from your energy supplier - are the foundation. These steps prepare your home to hold onto the energy you generate.

Step 2: The Integrated Upgrade

Once your home is efficient, it’s time to move beyond the basics. We look at a range of high-performance technology solutions - Heat Pumps, Solar PV, Home Batteries, EV Chargers, and Home Energy Management Systems (HEMS) - that integrate seamlessly. Because our systems are designed by engineers rather than salespeople, every piece of technology is calibrated to work in harmony, making it easier to implement in stages as your budget and needs evolve.

Why Invest Now?

We understand that driving these solutions requires an initial investment, which is why we help you approach this in stages.

While there are many statistics claiming long-term financial savings, the true value is multidimensional: • Financial Performance: From government grants for heat pumps to the ability to sell stored energy back to the grid, your home becomes an asset that generates value. • Property Premium: As energy certification levels rise, your property becomes more desirable and valuable to future buyers. • Future-Proofing: You are insulating your family against volatile global energy markets and regulatory changes, such as the upcoming phase-out of traditional heating systems.

Your Next Step: If you are thinking about investing in your home, don't just buy a product - create a plan. Speak to a certified energy company that understands the complexities of urban off-grid living. At Heatility, we work with you to map out a clear energy road-map, providing you with indicative costs and specific, transparent savings. This isn’t just about retrofitting; it’s about future-proofing your property and taking the first step on your domestic energy journey.

The secret history of The Light Bulb The glowing past of The Light Bulb in Wandsworth reveals a fascinating chapter of the Industrial Age 24 | Business Connexions

Focus On |

Long before it was home to some of today's brightest businesses, the site that became The Light Bulb in Wandsworth was playing its part in the race to illuminate the world.

From factory floor to atrium By the late twentieth century, the old Welsbach site had become a business village of workshops and studios. Then Workspace, with Mount Anvil, reimagined the quarter: The Light Bulb as its workspace heart, the neighbouring Filaments providing new homes, and fresh pedestrian routes stitching it back into Wandsworth life.

But it wasn't the electric light bulb that rolled off this factory's production line. It was the competition - gas lights that threatened the adoption of electricity around the globe.

The empire strikes back (with gas) In the 1880s, electric lighting was a flashy new technology threatening to make gas lamps obsolete. The gas industry needed a comeback and Austrian chemist, Carl Auer von Welsbach, came up with one. Welsbach invented the incandescent gas mantle: a delicate mesh hood that, heated by a gas flame, glowed many times brighter than a bare flame. Overnight, gas lighting was dazzling. The mantle bought the gas lamp another half-century of life, lighting homes and streets long after electricity should reasonably have finished it off. The Welsbach Incandescent Gas Light Company was based in Wandsworth, on the land where The Light Bulb now stands. The site that once made the electric bulb's greatest rival is now named after one.

The mantle bought the gas lamp another half-century of life, lighting homes and streets long after electricity should reasonably have finished it off.

Gas mantles were still being made in Wandsworth after man had walked on the Moon.

Today the nods to the past are everywhere. Wrought iron details meet neon-style lighting, and the grand atrium floods the building with the one thing this site has always traded in: light. Around 200 businesses now work where mantle-makers once did - designers, developers and founders chasing their own bright ideas. So The Light Bulb is more than a clever name. This corner of Wandsworth spent decades keeping the world lit - and it's still an illuminating place to work, with bright ideas popping off all over the place.

Wandsworth: unexpectedly electric During the first half of the twentieth century, this pocket of Wandsworth hummed with the manufacture of all things illuminating: light switches, sockets, plugs and lamps. Just around the corner, the vast Veritas gas mantle works opened in 1919 on a seven-acre site and kept going until 1972 - meaning gas mantles were still being made here when colour television was in living rooms and man had walked on the Moon. Wandsworth has always made things. The River Wandle, which gives the area its name, was once one of the hardest-working rivers in England, its banks crowded with mills. Huguenot refugees brought dyeing and hat-making here in the 1600s, the Ram Brewery brewed beer on the High Street for centuries, and in 1803 the Surrey Iron Railway - a strong claimant to be the world's first public railway - came clanking through, drawn by horses.

Around 200 businesses now work where mantle-makers once did - all chasing their own bright ideas. The Light Bulb offers offices and studios in the heart of Wandsworth, a short walk from Wandsworth Town station. Come and see it shine - book a tour today. Business Connexions | 25

Wandsworth ‘open for business’ with new Developer Forums

Wandsworth Council is opening the door to growth with a new programme of Developer Forums as it builds relationships with investors, developers and regeneration partners and sends a clear message that the borough is once again open for business.

Following an initial Developer Forum earlier this summer, the council is now preparing to hold the next session at Battersea Power Station, bringing together public and private sector partners to discuss how to unlock investment, accelerate housing delivery and support growth across the borough.

Councillor Robert Morritt, Leader of Wandsworth Council, said: "Wandsworth is open for business. We want to work with ambitious partners who share our commitment to getting on with delivering high-quality homes, supporting economic growth and investing in our borough. "We are keen to attract development that creates jobs, improves infrastructure and helps deliver the homes our residents need. Our borough has enormous potential, and we are determined to create the conditions for investment and growth - so come and talk to us." This is the next step in our renewed engagement with the development sector as Wandsworth remains one of London's most significant growth locations, with major opportunities

in Wandsworth Town, Clapham Junction, Battersea and Nine Elms. The council is keen to work constructively with organisations that can help deliver the new homes, jobs, infrastructure and thriving town centres that we wish see come forward. Future forums will build on conversations about housing delivery, economic growth, placemaking, planning and regeneration so that we can better understand the challenges and opportunities presented. With a focus on growth and the benefits of growth for Wandsworth’s residents and businesses, the council is working hard to strengthen links with developers, investors, employers and key institutions.

Construction starts on next phase of Battersea Power Station development

Battersea Power Station Development Company and Sisk have broken ground on Prospect Place South, the next phase of development for the 42-acre riverside neighbourhood.

The construction of Prospect Place South is expected to create 400 jobs, with an aim for 20 per cent of the workforce to be from the local area. This target has been exceeded across the 7,500 jobs which have already been created at Battersea Power Station, including opportunities through Wandsworth Work Match. Construction is expected to complete in 2030. The Leader of Wandsworth Council, Cllr Robert Morritt said: “It's fantastic to see work begin here on Prospect Place South as we reach another important milestone in the transformation of Battersea Power Station. Wandsworth needs more homes of all types, giving people more choice about where they live, and we're supporting the growth of vibrant neighbourhoods and town centres by increasing the range of homes available across the borough to buy or rent."

26 | Business Connexions

James Saunders, CEO at Battersea Power Station Development Company, said: “Breaking ground at Prospect Place South marks an exciting next chapter in the regeneration of Battersea Power Station and, importantly, sees construction getting underway on site once again. This is another significant step towards realising our long-term vision for the neighbourhood and will create further jobs and community spaces for local residents. "We are delighted to be working with Sisk, whose expertise and commitment will be instrumental in bringing this next phase to life. Together, we will build on the incredible transformation already achieved at Battersea Power Station and deliver the next Gehry Partnersdesigned buildings on Electric Boulevard.” Designed by Gehry Partners, Prospect Place South will comprise two buildings, Rosewood House and Hayworth House, which complete the riverside neighbourhood’s pedestrianised high street, Electric Boulevard. The buildings will deliver approximately 300 new homes, 65,000 sq ft of new commercial space for shops, cafes and restaurants, a

15,000 sq ft Community Hub, and an expanded bike hub providing 600 spaces free of charge. As main contractor, Sisk will lead the construction of the development, working alongside Battersea Power Station Development Company and the wider project team to deliver the Gehry designed buildings, which form an extension to the highly recognisable existing buildings at Prospect Place, and remain the only residential buildings in the UK designed by Frank Gehry, the worldfamous architect and designer of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. The ongoing focus on sustainability means Prospect Place South has a more modern aesthetic to reduce the carbon footprint, while green roofs will also be present on both buildings, contributing to a minimum 10 per cent biodiversity net gain. Attendees at the ground-breaking ceremony included Marsha de Cordova, Labour MP for Battersea; Councillor Robert Morritt, Leader of Wandsworth Council; Karen Gleaves, Employer Engagement Manager – Construction at Wandsworth Work Match; Tan Sri Shahril Ridza Ridzuan, Chairman of Battersea Project Holding Company; James

Saunders, CEO at BPSDC; and Aidan King, Operations Director at Sisk. Representatives from S P Setia, Sime Darby Property, Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) and the Employee Provident Fund (EPF), the Malaysian consortium that purchased the Battersea Power Station site in 2012, were also in attendance. With approximately half of the regeneration project now completed at Battersea Power Station, strategic urban design planner, Studio Egret West, has been appointed to evolve Rafael Viñoly’s original masterplan, first conceived over 15 years ago, to respond to changes in expectations around lifestyle, leisure and workspace. A planning application is due to be submitted for the revised masterplan outlining the vision for the remaining 16 acres of the 42-acre Battersea Power Station site. The future phases have the potential to deliver up to 3.2 million sq ft of residential, commercial, cultural and leisure space and will complete the riverside neighbourhood, which is already home to over 2,200 homes, c. 800,000 sq ft of offices and more than 170 shops, bars, restaurants and leisure venues.

of Work Match jobs success for residents The council’s Work Match service has now supported over 3,700 local residents into work and training since it was set up 13 years ago to boost opportunities emerging from the borough's growth.

Proud of successes Councillor Lynsey Hedges, Cabinet Member for Opportunity, said: “We’re so proud of Work Match’s successes over the past 13 years. This is a brilliant free service making sure growth in Wandsworth translates into actual opportunities for residents and helping businesses find the talent they need. “I was delighted to watch trainees learn bar and hospitality skills today at Lockes in Battersea – practical support like this helps residents build confidence, gain new skills and move into local jobs.”

Wandsworth Council initially set up the jobs brokerage service to ensure local people benefited from jobs and training arising from new development and economic growth. The new annual report shows that since launching in September 2013, Wandsworth Work Match has engaged 3,708 residents with the service. Training has been provided for 2,871 residents and 3,052 local people have been supported into sustainable jobs.

Steve Locke from Lockes Bar said: “At LOCKES Bar Academy we believe hospitality is one of the most accessible routes back into employment. I opened my first bar, Be At One, here in Wandsworth in 1998 and grew it to over 30 venues nationwide - so I know this is an industry where you can start with no experience and build a real career. "That's why working with Wandsworth Council's Work Match team matters to us: it lets us give local people, particularly young people getting back into work, the practical

training and industry connections they need to succeed. This is the kind of partnership that turns training into real, local employment."

Construction training Residents from across the borough, from Roehampton and West Hill to Battersea and Tooting, have engaged with Work Match to find new opportunities, including training on housing construction as part of Homes for Wandsworth developments. Two construction training candidates gained skills on Wandsworth’s Platt Estate, SW15. Jamie, a Putney resident, completed slinger and telescopic-handler training through Work Match on the estate, where he grew up. He said: "I’ll be walking past this project every day knowing I built this, and that’s something money can’t buy.” Ismail, from Roehampton, trained on the slinger and signalling course on the estate with "outstanding" support from Work Match. He said: “I had no qualifications but I wanted to progress further with my career. My confidence levels have gone up, everything has improved.”

Residents from across the borough, from Roehampton and West Hill to Battersea and Tooting, have engaged with Work Match to find new opportunities, including training on housing construction as part of Homes for Wandsworth developments. Residents and businesses can find out more about current opportunities by visiting the Work Match website: https://www.wandsworthworkmatch.org or emailing wandsworthworkmatch@richmondandwandsworth.gov.uk. BCC Economic Forecast: Weak business investment hits growth outlook The latest British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) Economic Forecast suggests the outlook for the UK will remain uncertain.

While the economy was more resilient in Q2 than expected, higher energy and business costs are likely to keep growth weak this year and next. The key points in the forecast are: • GDP in 2026 is expected to grow by 1.0% (compared with 0.9% in the previous forecast) then 1.0% in 2027, rising to 1.3% in 2028. • Faced with a raft of domestic cost pressures and global headwinds, business investment is now expected to fall by 0.2% this year, followed by a rise of 0.4% in 2027, and 1.2% in 2028. • Inflation is forecast to peak at 3.6% by the end of this year (3.8% in the previous forecast) before easing to 2.3% by Q4 2027. • Unemployment is forecast to be 5% by the end of 2026 and then peak at 5.4% in 2027. Youth unemployment is expected to reach a high of 17.6% next year. • The Middle East conflict and US tariffs mean exports are likely to only grow by 0.4% in 2026, improving to 1.3% in 2027.

28 | Business Connexions

UK economic outlook GDP is anticipated to grow by 1% in 2026, which is only marginally better than the BCC’s previous forecast (0.9% in the Q2 forecast). Despite severe global challenges, in particular higher oil prices, the UK economy was more resilient than expected in the first six months of this year. Within uncertainty about the course of conflict in the Middle East, GDP is expected to remain at 1% in 2027. Growth is forecast to pick up to 1.3% in 2028. GDP is boosted by private consumption for the forecast period, with investment making up a diminishing contribution, and net trade contributing negatively due to the export deficit. The economy continues to be weighted towards services industries, with growth in that sector 1.5% this year. In contrast, construction is expected to contract by 1.3% in 2026. Meanwhile, the forecast suggests manufacturing will perform better than expected this year overall, with grow of 1% (0.8% in the previous forecast).

Business investment will continue to struggle With firms facing high domestic cost pressures, the BCC is forecasting business

Economy | David Bharier, Deputy Director Economics and Insights at the British Chambers of Commerce, said: “Our latest forecast paints an uncertain outlook for the UK economy. Businesses have absorbed another major geopolitical shock and shown real resilience. “But growth remains subdued, and rests on consumption, not investment. Net trade is also a drag in every single year of the forecast. “Our sentiment data bears this out. Just 17% of firms now say they are increasing investment, the lowest since the pandemic, citing labour costs and taxation as the main factors. A declining proportion of SME exporters are seeing increased overseas sales. “This is the result of a decade of rising costs. Our modelling shows domestic, policydriven business cost base has risen by more than 70 per cent since 2016 for a typical SME, even before Brexit trade friction and global shocks are factored in. “AI and exports could hand the UK a major double gain, but the general cost burden holding back SMEs also needs to be addressed. investment to contract by 0.2% in 2026, before recovering to growth of 0.4% in 2027. The figure for this year is an upgrade on the previous estimate (-2.2% in the Q2 forecast), reflecting stronger ONS data in Q2. However, BCC surveys show SME sentiment has fallen to its lowest level since the pandemic, suggesting the forecast improvement is down to the volume of investment by larger firms.

Inflation pressures to remain stubborn CPI inflation is expected to stay above target until the end of the forecast period. After easing in spring and early summer this year, inflation is expected to peak at 3.6% in Q4 this year (compared with 3.8% in the previous forecast). Higher household energy costs because of the conflict in the Middle East continue to be the main drivers. There is also a risk from higher food prices in the wake of this summer’s drought in parts of the UK. The forecast suggests the interest base rate will stay at 3.75% over the next two years, as the Bank of England looks to see inflation easing gradually without causing a wage price spiral. However, the combined possible impact of food inflation, high energy prices and the Middle East conflict, could lead to an interest rate rise.

Unemployment to rise next year While the labour market has proved more resilient than expected in recent months, unemployment is still expected to end 2026 at 5.0% (a downgrade from 5.2% in the previous forecast) and then reach 5.4% in 2027. Youth unemployment remains a real cause for concern for the UK economy. It is expected to be 16.6% by the end of the year (down from 16.9%), before peaking at 17.6% in 2027. Growth in average earnings is forecast to hold steady at 3.75% in 2026 and 2027, as firms face squeezed margins.

Exports to struggle amid global uncertainty UK exports are expected to grow by just 0.4% this year. While that is an upgrade on the previous BCC forecast (0.2%), reflecting some easing of Middle East tensions, the absence of a lasting peace deal means trade will remain challenging. The forecast suggests exports will grow by 1.3% in 2027, and 2.4% in 2028. Imports are anticipated to grow by 1.9% this year (compared with 1.4% in the last forecast), easing to 1.7% in 2027. Consequently, net-trade is expected to sit at -2.9% of GDP this year, and –3% in 2027.

“The central task of the next Budget is to enable firms to invest, innovate, and trade. every measure needs to pass a growth delivery test. Does it visibly increase investment, exports, hiring or expansion? Until it does, don’t expect this pattern to break.”

Our latest forecast paints an uncertain outlook for the UK economy. Businesses have absorbed another major geopolitical shock and shown real resilience. Business Connexions | 29

Charity |

At the start of September 2013 Samuel, my son, was admitted to St George's hospital in South London. He was diagnosed with a cancer, one that is very rare – Precursor T-Cell Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Samuel started his charity to help really sick kids and their families get through what is most likely the worst time in their lives, to make their time more bearable and to bring some relief, fun and hope to their day. We support seriously ill kids at St George’s Hospital in Tooting

with equipment, games, ward improvement and gifts, giving the children the support and care needed to make it through this awful and scary time. Our Mission is to support seriously and terminally ill children, in hospital and at home, across the UK. This is the amazing boy who started the charity. Even through his own painful and scary journey, Samuel just wanted to make things better for the other kids on the ward.

a really positive relationship with you and help you to feel part of the Samuels Charity family. | Profile

Switched On London: my business journey I'm David Lyons Whyte, Managing Director and co-founder of Switched On London (SOL). We're a heating, electrical, plumbing and renewables business based on Garratt Lane in Earlsfield. Today we employ 20 people, run more than 17 branded vans, and work across south-west and central London on gas, electrics, plumbing, heat pumps, air conditioning and solar. This includes diagnostics, certification, servicing, repairs and installs for local homeowners. 34 | Business Connexions

Profile | Where it started We founded SOL in January 2015 with a simple aim: to be the local, family run trades company people could genuinely rely on. We started as a multi-trade business because that's what our customers needed. When someone's boiler breaks down or their electrics fail, they don't care about trade boundaries. They want one company that turns up, knows what it's doing and sorts the problem. That principle is still at the heart of everything we do today. The early years were about earning trust one job at a time, with jobs such as boiler repairs and servicing, rewires, consumer unit upgrades and everyday plumbing. This is still our bread and butter today, but we have expanded to taking on much more complex works. We invested early in the accreditations that underpin quality in our industry. SOL is Gas Safe and FGAS registered, NICEIC, NAPIT, Thames Water approved and MCS and Trustmark certified. We see accreditations as a commitment rather than a badge. They mean our engineers are properly trained, our work is inspected and of high quality, and our customers are protected long after the job is finished. Growth hasn't always been a straight line. We had flat times while we restructured the business internally. It cost us in the short term, but it was the right decision to allow for a long term sustainable company. We tightened up our scheduling, how we communicate with customers and how we support our engineers, and we came out of it a much stronger company which is built to last in the local area.

The move to renewables Over the last few years, we've deliberately repositioned SOL as a renewables led installer. We now install and commission heat pumps from all the major manufacturers, including Vaillant, Samsung, LG, Daikin, Panasonic and Mitsubishi. Alongside these, we’ve introduced solar PV, battery and air conditioning to ensure we can deliver the full renewables package to our customers. For us it was a natural step. The skills that make a good heating and electrical engineer are exactly the skills needed to design and deliver on a renewables project. Because we've always had gas, electrics and plumbing under one roof, we can for example take a home from an old boiler to a fully working low-carbon system without passing the customer between several contractors. London homes bring their own challenges. Victorian terraces, flats, limited outdoor space and conservation areas all need careful thought. A heat pump in Wandsworth isn't the same as one on a new-build estate, so we put a lot of effort into getting the design right from the start. When it's done well, customers are delighted with the results: lower carbon emissions and cheaper energy bills.

My involvement with the Chamber I've been a member of the Chamber since 2018, and it has played a real part in SOL's growth. I regularly attend Chamber events, which have ranged from touring Battersea Power Station to watching football at AFC Wimbledon. Every event has been a chance to network with like minded local businesses. Running a business can be lonely, with a lot of unknowns, but the Chamber puts you in a room with people who understand the same challenges around staffing, cash flow and growth. Some of our best suppliers and customers have come through those connections. I've also tried to give something back to the Chamber. I was delighted to deliver the speaker slot at the Wandsworth Big Breakfast last year, where I talked about the company's growth and the lessons we've learned along the way. We've entered the Wandsworth Business Awards for the last four years, and each year has been a highlight. Last year SOL was named Best Overall Business and I was named Business Owner of the Year. We've also won the Best SME award twice. This year we took the Innovation and the Sustainability award after three years as runner-up. That win meant a great deal because we'd come so close so many times before. But as I said on the night, the awards really belong to the team. From the engineers doing excellent work in people's homes and an office team that answers the phone and follows through, it truly is a team effort.

Looking ahead Demand for low-carbon heating keeps growing, and I believe the next few years are SOL's biggest opportunity yet. My priorities are: • continuing to train and develop our team • continuing to grow the renewables side of the business • bringing more technology into our day-to-day operations, so our engineers spend more time doing what they do best and less time on admin. The trades have a huge role to play in getting London to net zero. I want SOL to be the company that proves it can be done properly, with good installations, honest advice and a team people are proud to work for. All that while not losing where we started from - delivering a local, family company that local people can rely on.

| Meet new Member

From a Little Window to a Big First Year La Finestra started with a simple idea: to bring a little piece of Italy to Southfields through one of the things we know best – good food, great ingredients and simplicity. 38 | Business Connexions

For me, though, starting a business was about more than food. I grew up in a family where running your own business was always part of life, so that entrepreneurial mentality was instilled in me from an early age. I had always wanted to work for myself and build something of my own. Finding the right premises proved to be one of our first challenges. We knew the

area we wanted to be in, but finding a space that worked for both our location and our budget wasn't easy. That forced us to think differently. Around the same time, a small service window in Southfields became available. Rather than seeing its size as a limitation, we saw an opportunity to build a concept around it –and La Finestra, Italian for “the window”, was born.

Meet new Member | We wanted to create something that felt authentic while also becoming part of the neighbourhood. The focus has always been on quality ingredients, generous combinations and a menu that gives people a reason to come back and discover something new. The first year has been an incredible learning experience. Like any new independent business, we opened without knowing exactly what to expect. We've had to understand our customers, adapt, learn from mistakes and constantly look for ways to improve. What we perhaps didn't expect was how quickly La Finestra would become part of the local community. We've been incredibly fortunate to build a loyal group of regular customers, many of whom have supported us since our first few weeks. We've also had opportunities to collaborate with other local businesses and participate in community events. Receiving the Highly Commended recognition at the Wandsworth Business Awards 2026 was a particularly proud moment for us and an encouraging recognition of what we'd managed to build in our first year. Running an independent business is demanding, and there have certainly been challenges along the way. But seeing customers return week after week – and recommend us to their friends, families and colleagues – makes those challenges worthwhile. This September marked our first anniversary. Looking back at those first twelve months, we're extremely proud of what has grown from such a small window, but we see this as just the beginning.

We opened in September 2025, specialising in Italian focaccia sandwiches made with carefully selected ingredients. The concept remains deliberately simple: no tables and no traditional shopfront. Customers order directly from our little window, and each focaccia is prepared fresh to order. Our Italian roots have been central to La Finestra from the beginning.

Our ambition is to continue growing La Finestra, building on what we've created in Southfields while staying true to the simplicity, quality and identity that made the concept work in the first place. For now, our focus remains exactly what it was on day one: great focaccia, great ingredients and making sure the person walking away from our window wants to come back.

Receiving the Highly Commended recognition at the Wandsworth Business Awards 2026 was a particularly proud moment for us and an encouraging recognition of what we'd managed to build in our first year.

The new centre provides modern facilities for an extended range of primary care services, including face-to-face and virtual appointments, and enables community health providers to deliver services locally with 22 consulting rooms and multiple treatment spaces. Wandsworth Council has provided the majority of the £15m funding for the Sleaford Street Health Centre using contributions the council has collected from local developments. The delivery

of the centre has involved cooperation between NHS South West London, Wandsworth Council, Battersea Power Station, Peabody, NHS Property Services and Battersea Fields Practice. Andrew Bland, Chief Executive of NHS South West London, said: “Sleaford Street Health Centre is an important investment in local healthcare for people in Nine Elms, Battersea and the surrounding area. “This new facility provides modern space for GP services and community healthcare, helping residents access high-quality care closer to home.

Northcote Chiropractic: Caring for My Community, One Nervous System at a Time

42 | Business Connexions

Health & Wellbeing |

In January 2013, eight months pregnant and newly arrived in London, the first thing on my list was finding a chiropractor. That's how I walked through the door of Northcote Chiropractic and I knew two things immediately: I wanted to work there, and one day, it would be mine. The first dream came true fast; the second took until November 2024, after twelve years working alongside the practice and watching it grow every step of the way. I fell in love with chiropractic at 18, while studying medicine; it simply made more sense to me. I've always seen the body as one connected system: nervous system, neuromuscular system, function and mind, all working together. It's the same principle I bring to running Northcote as a business: our nervous systems are shaped by the people around us, and when we look after ours, everything including how we work, functions better. That's a message I think speaks to fellow business owners as much as to patients. Many of the professionals who come through our doors in Battersea and Clapham are exactly like us: carrying high responsibility, travelling constantly, or spending long hours at a desk: all of which puts real strain on the back and nervous system. Chiropractic care isn't just about resolving pain; it's about supporting the body to keep functioning well under that kind of pressure.

Delphine Sailly Director, Northcote Chiropractic 59 Webbs Road, Battersea, London SW11 6RX

We're grounded in the latest understanding of the nervous system's role in health, drawing on specialists like Dr Heidi Haavik, and our team never stops learning, through peers, seminars, and leading voices in the profession. I'm Webster Technique certified, and our chiropractors are Webster trained, which shapes our particular focus on women's health, pregnancy, and paediatric care: supporting mothers through pregnancy, and babies who are unsettled, colicky, or struggling to feed.

We also work with sportspeople: golfers and tennis players among them. We're trained to use the Myo Munchee device for tongue posture, jaw tension, and breathing patterns linked to sleep and nervous system function, and refer to myofunctional therapists when needed. None of this happens alone. Our chiropractors, assistants, and massage therapists work closely as one team, so every patient is genuinely looked after by more than one person. Being part of the Wandsworth Chamber has given me a different view of business: the staffing, marketing, and growth challenges I never saw as an associate and it's a genuine pleasure to introduce Northcote to fellow members this way. If you'd like to know more about how we work, or think chiropractic care could support you, your team, or your family, I'd love to hear from you.

Starting Up |

Starting up with:

Mike Wong MW Finman Ltd www.mwfinman.com Q1 In a few words tell us a bit about your business?

Q5 What has been your greatest business success to date ?

MW Finman Ltd is an accountancy practice working with owner-managed businesses, with a strong focus on trades and property services. We look after the accounts and tax work, but the aim is to be commercially useful beyond that too.

It’s still early, so I’m not going to pretend I’ve built some massive practice overnight.

Q2 What gives your business 'the x-factor’?

Q6 What has been your lowest moment ?

I’ve previously worked in trades, construction, development and property management, so I understand how these businesses actually operate.

Discovering quite how much regulation and paperwork is involved in setting up an accountancy practice… I probably should have seen that coming.

I’m interested in the business behind the accounts - the decisions, pressures and realities that created the numbers in the first place.

Q3 What motivated you to set up in business ? Years of running businesses have taught me that everything starts and finishes with the numbers, but there is often a gap between what business owners actually need and what a traditional accountancy relationship provides. I wanted to build a practice that behaves more like a business partner than a service provider.

Q4 What do you like most about working as a start-up ? Starting from scratch means I can build the systems and service around how I would have wanted to be looked after as a business owner. It also gives me the freedom not to define the usefulness of the practice purely by accounts and tax.

But getting properly launched, licensed and already working with a good mix of businesses feels like a decent start.

I want MW Finman to be a well-established local practice, but more importantly I want us to be known for understanding the businesses behind the accounts. Accounts and tax compliance matter, obviously, but I want clients to see us as commercially useful rather than just someone they speak to once a year.

Q7 In terms of business achievements, where do you want to be within the next 5 years ? I want MW Finman to be a well-established local practice, but more importantly I want us to be known for understanding the businesses behind the accounts. Accounts and tax compliance matter, obviously, but I want clients to see us as commercially useful rather than just someone they speak to once a year.

Q8 What would be your top tip to someone thinking of starting up their own business? A tip someone gave me over 15 years ago that still sticks: “Treat every opportunity as a liability.” Every opportunity uses resources, so understand what it is really going to cost before saying yes. And, being an accountant, understand your numbers until it becomes instinctive. Business Connexions | 45

Anaïs Bléhaut daab design architects Our core values are empathy and dialogue, where it all starts, exploration where it develops with curiosity, culture and making with what we inherit and ransmit, this represents our philosophy and how we operate.

Who are you? I am Anaïs Bléhaut, Franco-British Architect, co- founder of daab design architects. I am passionate about existing and heritage buildings where we live and interact homes, shops, schools, community centres. I love how improving them contributes to happiness, down to the smallest detail.

What's your business all about? daab atelier, is a culture led practice for the sustainable transformation of existing buildings and spaces. We offer Architecture of continuity through dialogue, exploration and expertise for generations. We use a value-based approach to retrofit and ask the questions: what are the space inherent qualities? How can we enhance them? How can they better serve the endusers aspirations and the planet? How can this space positively contribute?

Three words to describe yourself? Imaginative, engaging, approachable.

Ideal Customer? Anyone with the desire to explore and improve their environment, open minded to the creative journey and with the capacity to trust beyond their imagination. It is often by challenging what we know, repeat or take for granted that we can find solutions beyond expectations.

Biggest achievement? I am very proud of the diversity of clients, sectors, projects or buildings we support. Our culture led, problem solving approach to design is the common thread. Our projects range from school or community centres

energy retrofits, boutique retail fit outs to heritage properties refurbishments and interiors. It can always be a new brief new and yet drawing on our expertise and knowledge.

Biggest gripe? Unsensitive quick fixes interventions to the build space, internal or external. The negative impact of badly design environment on people and the planet is substantial. Taking the time to think through proposals, approaching problems and situations from a humane and nature perspective is always rewarding and not necessarily more complicated. The result has to provide happiness through beauty, function and environmental durability.

Your inspiration? Nature for the boldness and infinity of design, early civilisations for grounded problem solving and relationship with materials, future generations I see growing with the desire to have a balanced life and a deeper connection to nature, music for a creative boost.

Philosophy in Business? Our core values are empathy and dialogue, where it all starts, exploration where it develops with curiosity, culture and making with what we inherit and transmit, this represents our philosophy and how we operate.

Sporting Hero? Not so sporting in the later stages of her life, my grandmother is my hero. She had this incredible ability to create unique relationships with the people around her, making them feel very special.

Biggest tip for success? Do what makes you feel alive and expand your heart!
