FESTIVAL OF MUSIC

Sheku Kanneh-Mason & Harry Baker

Bach

& Beyond

Friday 15 November

Centenary Hall 7.00pm

From £29

Sheku Kanneh-Mason, an extraordinary British cellist, has captivated the world with his profound musicality and emotive performances. At the young age of 17, he achieved international recognition by winning the prestigious BBC Young Musician award in 2016, becoming the first black musician to do so. Further cementing his status as a classical music icon, Kanneh-Mason performed at the globally televised royal wedding of 2018 and was honoured with an MBE for his services to music in 2021.

Kanneh-Mason’s (cello) and Baker’s (piano) examination of this legacy begins with the music of Leoš Janáček, who, like Bach, found inspiration in age-old beloved melodies; in Janáček’s case, Czech folk song. Intricate works by Bill Evans and Pat Metheny are symbols of the roster of jazz musicians moved by the German composer’s output.

The second half of the programme showcases Bach’s diverse generic scope —Cello Suite No. 1, Prelude & Fugue in D-flat major, and his chorale, Ich ruf zu dir — alongside more direct homages by Baker and Brazilian composer, Heitor Villa-Lobos.

Running Time: Approx. 1 hour 50 mins including one interval.

Faulty Towers The Dining Experience

Friday 13 December

Centenary Hall 7.00pm

Faulty Towers The Dining Experience is an unmissable highly interactive comedy spectacular, where audiences enjoy a 3-course meal alongside 5-star comedy.

When the audience become diners in the ‘Faulty Towers’ restaurant, pretty much anything can happen – because 70% of the show is improvised. The fun starts as guests wait to be seated. It then hurtles along in a 2-hour tour de force of gags and shambolic service as Basil, Sybil and Manuel serve a ‘70s-style 3-course meal together with a good dollop of mayhem. Expect the unexpected!
