Athletics

Athletics at Rangitoto College has always been strong. The athletics season this year was no different with a number of outstanding results, as well as being packed full of events across the terms. With a strong contingent of junior and senior athletes, our students excelled across North Harbour, Auckland and New Zealand. The seasons are almost all year round with track and field, cross country, and road races enticing our students to set their targets high.

Track and Field Season

The North Harbour Zone Athletics Championships encouraged more than 35 student-athletes competing in a wide variety of events this year. The students achieved great success at these champs, displaying the talent of our athletics team. We ended up coming away with over 20 Auckland qualifiers, as well as 33 podium places.

This then sent 22 athletes to the Auckland Championships at Mt Smart in which we followed on from the North Harbour Championships, gaining a plethora of medals including some records also.

Congratulations to the following students: Jaden Movold – 1st Para 400m, 2nd Para 100m Nadja Kumerich – 1st Intermediate Girls Hammer (Auckland Record), 2nd Intermediate Girls Shot Put Antonia Martin – 1st Senior Girls 2km Race Walk (Auckland Record) Liam McKellar – 2nd Intermediate Boys 200m Emmy Hurcum – 1st Junior Girls 800m Nyla Spencer – 3rd Junior Girls 800m Stella Anderson – 3rd Intermediate Girls Triple Jump

A number of these students also competed at the North Islands Track and Field Championships, where our students gained another eight medals and five North Island records!

Cross Country Season

In Term 2, the cross country season gets underway for a number of our distance running athletes.

The North Harbour Cross Country Championships held at Moire Park was a terrific way for our junior students to wear the Rangitoto singlet for the first time. The course of mixed terrain was very intricate for our 25 athletes who raced brilliantly and proved victorious against a number of schools. We ended up with four individual medals and five team medals, including our Junior Girls claiming all of the top five placings.

Our team then competed at the Auckland Cross Country Championships at St Kentigern College on a tough hilly course claiming two individual medals and two team medals.

We then had Amy Hurly compete at the National Cross Country Champs in Taranaki where she placed a respectful 12th in the Year 9 girls race.

Road Race Season

Before the August lockdown we sent our team to the Auckland Road Race Championhips at Bruce Pulman Park. The conditions were extremely windy but our team managed to claim two individual medals and one team medal.

We now look on to the National Secondary School Championships in Taranaki in mid-December this year.
