International Baccalaureate

An International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma indicates to a future university that a student is capable of managing the demands of undergraduate studies. Rangitoto’s IB students this year have continued to impress us both in their academic achievements and also in the broader elements of the IB programme. The IB programme continues to grow within the school providing a second pathway to students in their final two years of school.

Rangitoto’s IB students enjoy the wider IB Core elements of their programme: Theory of Knowledge—TOK (a critical thinking course), Extended Essay—EE (an independent, university style, research project) and Creativity, Action and Service—CAS (ensures their academics balance with a wider worldview). Rangitoto’s IB students have also celebrated achievements in external New Zealand and worldwide competitions.

IB students have enjoyed learning inside and outside of the classroom this year. Mr Olsson, Ms Jessup and the Year 12 TOK students attended the Life of Galileo performance at ASB Waterfront Theatre. Galileo was one of the fathers of critical thinking. Students enjoyed learning about his life and the struggles he faced due to his critical approach to life. Year 12 English Literature students also enjoyed their trip to the Pumphouse Theatre where they saw The Crucible.

While academic achievement is obviously vital when a student seeks university entry, so is the ability for the tertiary institution to see that the student has wider interests and is a good citizen. This year our IB students spent the day involved in a variety of service activities including tree planting, cooking for the elderly, providing service at school, and at the SPCA.
