Optometrist Bruce Nicholls has seen a fair few changes in optometry over his 23 years in Browns Bay. Of special note, recent developments in retinal scanning technology have been made available with new advanced diagnostic equipment.

Nicholls Optometrists have just invested in the latest diagnostic scanner designed to give highly detailed imaging of the back of the eye. This Optical Coherence Tomograph (OCT) is now used to help diagnose and monitor many sight threatening conditions such as macular degeneration and glaucoma.

Our Topcon 3D OCT is the latest, most advanced technology used to view and analyse the retina. More advanced than retinal photography (which can only view the surface of the retina) the OCT enables us to analyse the individual layers of the retina. The scan is non-invasive, painless, simple and quick.

Bruce says, “This advanced technology will help with the early detection of many eye conditions and may prevent vision loss, assisting in maintaining a healthy active lifestyle. The OCT uses a scanning technique to build an image of the retina and other structures in the eye. We can then clearly see exactly what the issues are and provide the appropriate advice or referral.”

He recommends anybody with a family history of glaucoma or macular degeneration have this scan, which gives us the ability to track any changes over time. Even if you don’t have a family history of eye problems it is a good baseline procedure to undergo to ensure your eyes remain healthy.

Out & About in the Bays

'Mudrush' at Long Bay Primary School Hundreds turned out for the now famous 'Mudrush' event held at Long Bay Primary School on Saturday and Sunday September 12th/13th. Browns Bay Mag was there to catch some of the action on the Sunday.

1600 participants took on the 2.5km Mud Monster Mud Rush course over the weekend at Long Bay Primary.

It was simply fantastic to see kids enjoying themselves and handling a whole obstacle course across the grounds – from the amazing Mud Slide which was an all-time favourite followed by the undercover tummy

crawl. Can you imagine being face deep in mud or weaving through giant coloured filled air balloons before making your way to the finish line?

Slade McFarland is a North Harbour icon having played more than 100 games for North Harbour Rugby and he just completed his 3rd Mud Monster Mud Rush Event. He said this event was particularly tough but again he loved the mud slide. “It was a bit like, I’ve got plenty of speed, clear the way as I came flying down” he said of the super mud slide carved into the bank.

Spotlight on: Beyond Pilates

Cam Calkoen is an inspirational speaker who is bending perceptions to inspire change and an attitude of awesomeness through simple, lasting human truths. Passionate about the Shore, this column reflects the awesomeness that surrounds us and the potential we all have to achieve a personal best.

Embracing the opportunity Public speaking is ranked up there as one of the most terrifying things we can do, in regards to stress it is right up there with buying a house. Just as with buying a house, it can be one of the most rewarding things we do. In actual fact the things that challenge us the most can often reap the biggest rewards but that’s another story, back to the scary public speaking.

A question I’m often asked as a speaker is “do you still get nervous before give a talk”, the answer of YOU BET seems to be a surprise to people. The nerves are what create focus and it’s about managing them to minimize the challenge and maximize the opportunity.

These are some key steps I go through to reduce the fear: Speak with passion: Find a way to link your subject with something your passionate about, this will give you the visual one needs to be engaging and memorable.

Be consistent not predictable: In creating content that keeps us on our toes we keep the audience on the edge of their seats. The moment we default into what is expected we lose the edge.

It’s a relationship: Treat the presence you have as a speaker as you would any relationship you wish to have for a long time. Be clear, be attentive, be real and treat the audience how you would like to be treated yourself.

And the biggest secret is that not many of us are actually scared of speaking, we’ve been doing it since we were teeny tiny, but put us in front of an audience (whether that be two people or 2000 people) and self consciousness kicks in with what if I forget my words? What if I’m not funny? What if I start sweating? What if???

What if??? What if??? What if you didn’t embrace the opportunity?

So next time you’re asked to give a speech, host a meeting, make a toast or seal a deal consider the above with a blend of what you know and can research on the web and you might just surprise yourself with the result.

People in the Bays: Jacquie Jarry

JACQUIE JARRY

Supporting the local community Jacquie Jarry has a history of community work, aside from being a mum of five and a grandmother, she’s the Manager of Neighbourhood Support North Shore in Brown’s Bay, Toughlove rep for North Shore and has previously been Highbury House Manager. Jacquie answered a few questions from Courtney Bennett of Channel Magazine and Browns Bay Magazine about her work in the East Coast Bays and North Shore community and the importance of community groups in our local area.

COURTNEY BENNETT: Can you tell us about your work in Neighbourhood support?

JACQUIE JARRY: My role is to support interested residents of the North Shore to set up Neighbourhood Support Groups in their street. I either do this directly myself, or in some areas I have trained coordinators who are able to do this role.

CB: What do you like most about being involved in the community and why is it important?

JJ: What I like best are the people. I love people and I love connecting them. People need to feel like they belong somewhere.

My job helps this to happen.

CB: What do you enjoy most about your local area?

JJ: We cover the whole of the North Shore but what I most enjoy is discovering the unique flavour, ethnic mix and character of each suburb.

CB: What’s your favourite part about living on the North Shore?

JJ: How safe we are, and how caring and creative each suburb is.

so more neighbours are more connected. Make our streets more like mini villages.

CB: Do you have any favourite community events you look forward to?

JJ: Gathering Neighbourhood Support Group leaders, Police Days, Community Know your Neighbour Days. I just love attending these to catch up with old friends and meet new people.

CB: What do you do in your spare time?

JJ: Paint, put on events, kayak, make happy pages, go away in my little caravan with my husband and visit my grandchildren.

CB: Who are the people you admire most and why?

JJ: I admire people who open their hearts, lives and homes to others in their streets.

CB: Anything you feel we could do better as a community?

JJ: Lol that’s easy… set up more Neighbourhood Support Groups

1951 – Browns Bay Can you imagine what Browns Bay was actually like 60 odd years ago? Surf, sun, sand and camping with simple local grocery shops, yachties and old cars with the famous scoria road. Browns Bay formally known as “Naughty Bay” prior to the road being built was a nice place to be. Angela Johnson went to visit Alwyn McDermott to capture a bit of our history.

Alwyn with late husband Keith used to run the Browns Bay Motor Camp/Auto Park from 1951 to 1979. The Browns Bay Auto park was located on the site now occupied by Countdown.

The site was a total area of two and a half acres and was run as a family Auto Park where people would pay $25 per week to stay in a cabin, $12-$15 for a caravan or $6 per week to stay in their own tent.

In those days there was not a lot of shops in Browns Bay and upon reflection Alwyn remembers a cinema run by Olga Williams and Len Briggs. There was a chemist, post office, fruit shop and grocery store located on the camp site on the road front of Browns Bay Road, near the stream. The surf club was located on the site that's now the Bays Club and it originally started off as a little Garage/Shed. Life Savers were doing competitions most weekends in the summer and the Browns Bay life savers were known as the Eastern United Surf Life Savers.

Browns Bay at this time had only a scoria road and was well known as a party bay when the yachties came to stay. Apparently the police used to visit the camp a lot in the early days when previous owners Ken and Rita McDermott ran the camp.

There was certainly a few good stories to hear about in Browns Bay, such as a few rat scallion husbands meeting mistresses in hired out cabins and of course you can imagine the drama when they were caught out by their wives. In those days Joe King was the one and only policeman in Browns Bay and the police station was located in the same position as it is now. Back then it was only a quarter of the size.

During the time Alwyn and Keith McDermott ran the camp there was a camp House, office, 16 basic cabins that they equipped with a mattresses and crockery, eight flats, a television room and a cooking house, a toilet block and freezer room.

were drunk, or misbehaving, then you were asked to leave,” said Alwyn McDermott.

Browns Bay back then was simply a beach-side community, a place for all to come, sit back, relax and enjoy. Today it still is.

If you are into boating and launching at Browns Bay beach then consider joining up with the Browns Bay Boating Club. The Marine Centre houses the Club rooms, boat club tractors and Coastguard Northshore rescue vessel.

The boat club has 120 members; a mix of tractor users and social members. We have an active committee of 13 managing the activities of the club – 'C Mantis' and 'C Squirt' our dedicated tractors for launching.

The club offers: • 24 hour access to tractors for launching and retrieving your boat; avoid the embarrassment of being stuck in soft sand and save your vehicle from RUST, damaged brakes and much more.

• Join other members on weekend excursions and fishing adventures.

• Use the Club facilities and clean toilets • Chat with experienced boaties about the local picnic haunts, anchorages and much more.

• Be part of a club that promotes safety at sea and safe boating habits.

Full instruction on the use of the tractors is given for members under the Tractor Membership along with your boat undergoing a 30 point safety check, making sure that you have all the necessary equipment on board for safe boating in the gulf.

Rangitoto Swim School

Legally Speaking with Young & Caulfield

Rangitoto Swim School in the Heart of Browns Bay Rangitoto Swim School is now into its 15th year of operation.

Started by husband and wife team, Peter Simpson and Jane Geldard in 2001. Both have years of experience in the Aquatic industry, so it was only a natural transition to move into owning one of the Top Swim Schools in the heart of the Shore.

The Swim School has the reputation for being “The Friendliest Swim School” on the shore. That’s because the swim school is run by a family, for families. The main objectives are what is best for the children and for them to enjoy their swimming experience. Location is key for families, and parents find the parking right outside the door invaluable.

Classes are kept small, 4 children is the maximum number in the Learn to Swim Programme, meaning teachers are able to spend a lot of time with each child, encouraging them, improving their technique, and boosting their confidence. Each child also receives their own special Swim Passport which records their progression through each level.

The pool is heated to 33 deg to facilitate the baby and toddler groups. Water testing is recorded every 2 hours and the pool equipment is kept in optimum condition.

The Swim School changing rooms and main areas of the swim school are heated through the winter months, adding to our families’ requirements.

It’s a family affair at Young & Caulfield The law firm of Young and Caulfield is the longest established firm in the Bays.

People in the Bays: Penny Harding

PENNY HARDING

Educating the young minds of the Bay They don’t come much more dedicated than Penelope Harding, the Browns Bay local has been a Senior Teacher at East Coast Bays Community Crèche since its inception in November 1984.

Before working at the crèche, she taught primary school children for four and a half years. Penny grew up the in Bays and still lives locally with her husband Vince and their two dogs. Together they have two children and three grandchildren who all live locally too.

Penny kindly answered a few questions this month about her job as an educator. Courtney Bennett of Channel Mag and the Browns Bay Mag put these questions to her in September.

COURTNEY BENNETT: Why are you passionate about education?

PENNY HARDING: My mother was a teacher and so were my grandfather and his father and grandfather before him. Education has always been a prominent feature in my life. Discussions around quality teaching and positive outcomes for children have been features of my life for as long as I can remember. These conversations are still going on today with both my sister and daughter being teachers as well – seems to be in the blood! I believe it is the right of every child to be able to access and participate in high quality learning environments.

CB: What keeps someone in a job like yours for 30 years?

PH: Passion, inspiration, ongoing professional learning and of course the fabulous team I have the good fortune to work with.

CB: Did you always know you wanted to work with kids?

PH: I’ve always enjoyed children and I used to love babysitting for neighborhood families when I was a teenager. Growing up though I’d always wanted to be a lawyer, something to do with Perry Mason I think.

However circumstances at the time prevented me from pursuing that dream so I decided to be a teacher instead. Something I have never regretted doing although I’m still a great fan of lawyer T.V. programmes.

CB: How has the industry changed in that time?

PH: When I first started teaching it was considered a profession but since then early childhood education seems to have evolved into an industry for some parts of the sector. Personally I consider myself

Early Childhood Education has changed and evolved so much over the last 30 years it would be difficult to comment on every aspect. If had to mention any I would say the provision of bulk funding by the Ministry of Education in the late eighties was of huge significance for The Crèche because it meant we could pay our teachers a reasonable wage and remove the burden of covering the cost of running our programme from our families. The introduction of Te Whaariki (our early childhood curriculum) in the late nineties was of huge significance for early childhood education as a whole. To me it was validation and recognition of early childhood education, acknowledging it in its own right as a standalone sector within the broader education system.

CB: What does it take to be a truly good educator?

PH: Courage, dedication, energy, curiosity, openness and eagerness to learn, an appreciation of diversity, kindness, compassion, a sense of humour...

CB: What do children teach us adults?

Opportunities for locals to host 'homestay' students...

Unique New Zealand – known by our students as the school on the beach has been a ‘local’ in Browns Bay for just over 25 years.

Located at 1 Clyde Road in Browns Bay, opposite Countdown, is the main Unique New Zealand building (Campus 1) where you will find Reception, administration staff, junior and teen classes as well as a few adult classes spread over the building’s three floors.

Unique also has another campus further down Clyde Road above Calypso Fashions with nine classrooms for adult students.

Unique caters for a vast range of students with student advisors who are from Russia, the Middle East, Germany, Chile, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Thailand as well as a few New Zealanders who speak some of the students’ languages. These advisors have lived in New Zealand for a number of years and understand the cultural differences that students may experience when coming to a new country. They provide the students with excellent support and assist them with many things such as classes, changing visas, opening bank accounts, taking them to the Doctor, and helping them with adjusting to life in New Zealand.

Alistair is the Activities Co-ordinator and arranges the 'English plus Activities' programme as well as assisting adult students with any weekend trips, accommodation at backpackers or hostels and rental cars. The English plus Activities programme is very popular with teenage students who study English in the mornings and then, after lunch, go on a different activity. Beach BBQs, Mini Golf, Sky Tower, Tree Adventures, Snow Planet, and Waiwera Hot Pools are just a few of the fantastic activities on offer.

Homestay families can also request male or female students, teenagers or adults only, and always have a choice as to whether they would like to host the student offered.

Anne-Marie places over 1500 students each year in to homestays in Browns Bay and the surrounding suburbs. Sometimes you will see a lot of students from one particular culture in Browns Bay. This probably means it's school holidays in that specific country and we will have groups or multiple groups arriving at similar times.

As Unique is a private business, classes are available for students every day of the year except weekends and public holidays. December and January are particularly busy with many different nationalities arriving at the same time. If you think it looks particularly busy in Browns Bay it could be due to Unique being able to cater for up to 300 students at any one time.

Breast Cancer Support: News

Breast Cancer Support – We've been there too!

Over 2500 New Zealand women each year will hear the life-changing words, 'You have breast cancer.' Knowing that there is a community of volunteers in the Browns Bay area ready to help women cope with their breast cancer journeys can be comforting and reassuring.

The women of Breast Cancer Support (BCS) have 'been there too'. Trained Volunteers share their own breast cancer experiences from a positive, personal perspective, providing a monthly support group, one to one visits, and a telephone service to women diagnosed with breast cancer.

"Sitting down with someone who shares the same experience can be very helpful," says BCS Support Group Coordinator Judith Shinegold. "Sometimes you just need to talk to someone who understands what you're going through, who can listen, offer advice, information, and be there for you. That's what Breast Cancer Support is all about."

Daffodil Day

Good on you Browns Bay School!

On Friday August 28th, Browns Bay School coloured the school Yellow!

In fact you would find it difficult to recognise some pupils at Browns Bay School. There were splashes of yellow everywhere.

The ‘yellow’ mufti day was in support of Daffodil day and children had coloured hair ties, jewellery, t-shirts, hair and more.

Two pupils with Teacher Aides had picked buckets full of daffodils and these were bundled up to share with each class.

Therese Leslie Therese joins the Bayleys Long Bay team with many years experience and an impressive track record that saw her achieve a place in the top 30 North Shore salespeople with her previous agency. Therese immigrated to NZ from the UK in 2008, with her family. New Zealand had always been somewhere she was drawn to but Therese will admit the logistics of moving from the other side of the world was one of the biggest projects she had ever managed. However, this has given her invaluable insight as to what others go through. Now 7 years on the family has settled in and are enjoying the lifestyle and beautiful country. How is your approach different?

My approach is completely different! First I spend time listening. I ask lots of questions.

Often people don’t know exactly what they want, just what they don’t want! I have also chosen to work with an agency that values quality and service, which aligns with my core values.

When I was looking for houses in NZ, some of the salespeople I dealt with really didn’t listen to me and wasted a lot of time. I began to think how it could be improved. I studied, completed the exams and became licensed.

I work all over the North shore but specialise in the Bays, particularly Torbay and Long bay. I know the area very well and have buyers always looking in that area.

People in the Bays: Mitchell Hallett

MITCHELL HALLETT

Shore's up-and-coming Volleyball star

Mitchell Hallett.

Mitchell Hallett is a Bays Volleyball player representing New Zealand on the world’s sporting stage. At just 20 years old, the Murrays Bay local has played for the New Zealand Under 21 Volleyball and is currently part of the New Zealand men’s squad. He is hoping to make the final men’s team picked. He attended Mairangi Bay Primary School, Murrays Bay Intermediate and Rangitoto College, and has always been sports mad. Mitchell started volleyball in year nine and has played for North Harbour Raiders mens open team since year 12. He has also played in the Under 17s & 19s for North Harbour along the way. Mitchell also received an ASB Young Sportsman of the Year Award in 2013. Channel Mag’s Courtney Bennett put these questions to Mitchell during September.

Courtney Bennett: Explain what it feels like to represent New Zealand.

Mitchell Hallett: Being able to take the court with the New Zealand flag on your chest and your family's name across your back is a feeling like no other.

CB: In 10 year’s time, I’ll be….

MH: I aim to still be playing volleyball at a high level providing my body can handle it. Along the way I would like to be part of the group that helps to grow New Zealand Volleyball and get it more commonly We’ve thestage.

CB: What are your thoughts on changing the flag?

MH: I personally think New Zealand needs a flag that is individual and significant to us as a country. To me our current flag is too similar to the Australian flag so I think it does need to be changed.

CB: What sort of training do you do for your sport?

MH: During the season I do up to three skill trainings a week with the team as well as personal gym training three to four times a week.

CB: Who is the toughest team you have come up against and why?

MH: The toughest team I have come up against would be the National Chinese Junior Mens Team. They train six hours a day in specialised facilities and have played for twice as long as I have. Their skill level is hard to compete with.

CB: What’s next for your sporting career?

MH: Keep training and working hard with the New Zealand Mens Squad to compete for a spot in the National Mens Team.

CB: What do you do in your spare time?

MH: In my spare time like to surf, go to the beach with friends and

family, and I DJ.

CB: Do you have a mentor?

MH: Not really a mentor as such. However I do look up to a lot of different national and international players, like Luciano De Cecco (Argentinian star player).

CB: Favourite sport to watch live?

MH: Volleyball and Surfing.

CB: Favourite volleyball player and why?

MH: Luciano De Cecco from Argentina. This is because he is one of the best players in the world in my position. His skill and passion for the game is like no other.

CB: What’s the best part about playing volleyball?

MH: The Volleyball community is a very social group of people. Over the years I have made plenty of new friends both in New Zealand and around the world. Volleyball has also taken me to countries and places around the world I would never have been to if I hadn’t been involved.

Browns Bay Centre Community Tidy Up Saturday 10 October – 10am-12noon

Spring is the traditional season for sprucing up the place, so what better timing for a tidy-up.

Families, schools, business-owners and community groups in Browns Bay are invited to show their town centre streets, parks and beaches some love in this supervised clean-up event in Browns Bay, Saturday 10 October 10am-12pm.

All equipment is provided, the event will be led by Starting The Change’s Emma Wingrove, and the organisers, Kaipatiki Project Environment Centre, will shout a lunch party afterwards to thank all volunteers at Sherwood Park near the playground.

Education: Long Bay College Long Bay College is celebrating its 40 year anniversary on Friday 30 October. Come along to the school to watch the 1st XI cricket team take on an Old Boys team from 10am. Kick Off for the 1st XI Football Team vs Old Boys is at 2pm. Classrooms will be open for the whole day to wander through or if you’d like to just come along and catch up with school friends and teachers from the past, join us for refreshments from 3.30. Football firsts for Long Bay College The Long Bay College 1st XI Football Girls team has had an incredible season this year. The team won the Auckland Premier 2 League without losing a game (9 wins, 2 draws!) The school has never won this competition before and the team’s success has gained them a promotion to Auckland Premier 1 League in 2016.

The girls then went on to reach the Auckland Knockout Cup Final, again an accomplishment the school has never achieved until now. However Long Bay College was narrowly beaten 2-1 despite showing fantastic fight and determination.

As if those successes were not enough, the team then travelled down to New Plymouth to compete at the Grant Jarvis National Secondary Schools Tournament. Long Bay College was undefeated the whole week, winning the final in a nervous Penalty Shootout to become champions!

In total eight teams from Long Bay College competed at Tournament Week around the North Island with excellent results. In particular, the 1st XI Hockey Girls came second in their competition and the Premier Netball team finished 10 places ahead of last year.

Player of the Year A former student and current teacher aide at Long Bay College has been named Auckland Rugby League Women's Player of the Year 2015 at the Annual Premier Awards Evening.

Hold, Fold or Run? Once again the Senior School Production at Long Bay College explored the creativity and vision of one of its own to a resounding success. This year’s production, ‘The Vegas Crowd’, was written and directed

by Year 13 student Nathanael Tan and was incredibly well received.

A visual extravaganza taking elements of theatre, film, dance and graphic novels, The Vegas Crowd celebrated the actors, lighting designers, dancers and artists at Long Bay College. An ambitious project that followed Skylar Van Daal’s exceptionally performed con artist ‘Thomas Callahan’ as he evaded the law. As he set up his next con he was plunged into the shady underworld of The Verde Casino, all the while learning what it takes to love and be loved in return.

Walk the Line Young designers from across New Zealand were hitting the runway at New Zealand Fashion Week this year.

Among them was Year 13 Long Bay College student Niamh Clarkson who won the Beatnik Recyclable section of the Walk the Line Young Designers Fashion Show.

Run for youth, by youth, the Walk the Line fashion show is a fantastic opportunity for the future stars of the New Zealand fashion industry to make their mark on a world stage. Every garment shown at Walk the Line has been designed, sewn and styled by high school students aged between thirteen and eighteen. Niamh's entry, modelled

by Leah Reynolds, was a pinafore dress made out of coffee bean sacks, with a crop top under it.

She has represented New Zealand in touch and tag, and played netball and rugby at national level before embracing the 13-a-side code last year.

Georgia Hale made her New Zealand debut for the Kiwi Ferns at this year's Auckland Nines tournament. She has represented New Zealand in touch and tag, and played netball and rugby at national level before embracing the 13-a-side code last year.

Georgia plays for the Richmond Roses club.

During her school days she was named Long Bay College’s sportswoman of the year multiple times.
