Despite playing sport at an elite level, Austin says it was music, not cricket, which motivated him to upgrade to the Cochlear Nucleus 7 Sound Processor technology.

“I upgraded because you can listen to music directly through your sound processors or talk to someone through [wireless streaming] which makes a

massive difference in my life,” he says.

“With the Nucleus 7 Sound Processor, the sound quality is a lot better. When someone calls me or [when I’m] listening to music, it automatically goes straight through to my sound processors. Whenever I speak to someone it’s very clear and so easy to understand especially

USTIN PHILIP drives himself to be the best that he can be. And the 18-year old cricketer is well on his way to achieving that – he is one step closer to his goal of playing internationally for Australia.

Austin, a bilateral Cochlear™ implant recipient, has just returned [December] from India where he was the youngest member of the 14-man Australian Deaf Cricket Squad that toured for the 2018 Deaf ICC Twenty20 World Cup. Half the squad, including the captain and vice-captain, have cochlear implants. The Australians won fourth place in New Delhi behind Sri Lanka, host country India, and South Africa, and their result is in part thanks to Austin’s bowling, which reached speeds of up to 120 km/hour.

But under competition rules, Austin’s new Cochlear Nucleus® 7 Sound Processor devices were not permitted on the field. It’s only the second competition he has played without his processors.

because you don’t get to hear any background noise.”

Being able to control the functions of the sound processor through his smart phone is “a massive advantage because I don’t have to worry about using ear phones or even when I’m talking to someone, I feel confident, too, that I can hear very clearly”.

Austin also loves the ForwardFocus feature. In noisy situations he reports hearing far more clearly as background noise is shut out, and he finds that by keeping the program in the No 1 position, the volume is great.

And his favourite accessory is the Dry & Store, designed to remove moisture from the sound processor.

Austin was sure to pack it for the trip to India because he was concerned about his sound processors in the humidity.

SECOND IMPLANT A GAME CHANGER After being diagnosed with deafness at age two, Austin received his first Cochlear implant at age six, which he says changed his life “dramatically” and helped him during his first few years at primary school.

But his second implant at age nine – when he started to play cricket –was the game changer. ”It made a big difference to my life

”When I had the left cochlear [implant], I could only hear 75%, but when I got the right one I could hear everything.

It’s no surprise that Austin developed a love for cricket during this time as his mother, Sheeba, constantly

used cricketing terms and the names of famous cricketers when talking to him as he was growing up.

Austin is thankful for the support of his family, who migrated from Kerala in southern India when he was a baby. He says they all helped him to be strong and positive, to play cricket, to make friends, be humble and to “never give up”.

When he was chosen by Cochlear in 2015 to appear in a video alongside Australian cricketing hero, Brett Lee, the full-day shoot was an opportunity to talk with a cricketing hero about the game.

So when Brett Lee heard about Austin’s recent inclusion in the Deaf World Cup he said: “I’m so pleased that Austin Philip is a step closer to his dream of international cricket. Filming Cochlear’s ‘Sounds of Cricket’ website video three years ago I could see then that he had a lot of promise.”

Now in his final year of high school, playing grade cricket on weekends and hoping to study business at university in 2020, Austin would like to be a role model for other kids with hearing loss and cochlear implants.

“Don’t let anyone get in the way of what you want to achieve,” is his advice to kids with hearing loss.

“Work hard. Never give up. Be yourself. Be the best you can.”

A great decision

Retiree Max Houterman overcomes social isolation

R

ETIREMENT IS typically a time to connect with grandchildren, reconnect with friends socially, and relish in the new-found freedom of our twilight years.

But for Max Houterman, retirement was looking bleak.

After a career as a spring maker and struggling for many years working in a noisy environment, Max had severe industrial hearing loss by the time he retired. At age 65, he started wearing hearing aids, but they became of little use.

Despite the doting attention of his wife, Mary, and the lure of his grandchildren, Max avoided family events or getting involved in outside interests.

He became increasingly isolated.

“I was very quiet. I didn’t go out. I didn’t enjoy going to family barbeques.

If I went, I sat in the corner,” says Max, now aged 77.

It wasn’t until Max’s wife, Mary, retired that he agreed to join a social club, which took the couple on regular outings and gatherings that featured a guest speaker.

After listening to the inspiring story of a retiree with a cochlear implant at one of those gatherings, Max’s interest in the idea of an implant piqued.

Much soul-searching and many discussions later with other implant recipients, his healthcare professional and Mary, he decided to go ahead with his first implant at age 73. At aged 75, Max received his second implant.

Two implants and two sound processors later, Max says his life has changed forever.

“I’ve joined the human race again.

Before I was very quiet. I felt very cut off. I talk a lot now,” he says, adding that he regularly attends events to share his experience.

Mary describes Max now as talkative and more outgoing since he received the first implant. He even goes to the bank and shops on his own, which he would never do before.

Avoiding occasions with family and friends in noisy restaurants is a thing of the past thanks to Max’s Cochlear™ Wireless Mini Microphone which he pairs with his Nucleus® 6 Sound Processor devices.

The small accessory has enabled Max to engage in conversations involving several people even with the presence of background noise.

“It is very good because it cuts the background noise out,” he says.

“I mainly use it to listen to current affairs shows on TV where there are panel discussions. I put it in front of the TV. It has a remote control that I can use to adjust the sound and the background noise.”

If he is eating in a restaurant, Max puts the mini microphone in the centre of the table and can engage in conversations with his companions, even if it is noisy.

“I use it a lot when we go to the Probus [retiree] club meetings.

The speaker can clip it to their clothes and it becomes easy to listen to them,” says Max, referring to its streaming capability.

HE SOUND of an oven timer may be nothing special for many people, but for 38-year-old Kulthida Pisitpaibool it’s the sound of a successful business.

Now the owner of a thriving bakery in Surat Thani, Kulthida says she would not be where she is today were it not for her Cochlear™ implant.

Kulthida lost her hearing at the age of 18, leaving her scared and uncertain of her future.

“I woke up one day without any voice. I was really frightened,” she says.

“I thought I’d lost my world.”

But when her doctor told her that cochlear implants would return her hearing, Kulthida became hopeful for a brighter future.

“I was glad to know that it might help me,” she says.

After receiving her cochlear implant, Kulthida began to hear the world differently.

“After the surgery, my world turned from a silent world into a noisy world,” she says.

And it was after the surgery that Kulthida was able to start her own bakery business.

“Running a business, I have to take a lot of orders over the phone.

Without cochlear implants it wouldn’t be possible, but now I can run my business smoothly,” she says.

“I am now able to hear my customers. I can hear the timer on the oven when things are ready. It might be just a little thing for some people, but it changed my life.”

For Kulthida, it’s not just business that’s booming – her social life has also blossomed.

RE YOU PLANNING to travel this holiday season?

We know that getting yourself or your family ready for a trip, particularly with a child with hearing loss, can be time consuming and challenging given everything that needs to be accomplished prior to departure.

We have created a travel list to help so you won’t forget important essentials that will be needed while you are away from home. Use the list below to help prepare and plan for your trip.

Tip: Use an index card to write down this important information or store the information on your smartphone and/or tablet. If old enough, show your child where you keep this information just in case you are not around and your child needs to access it.

• Pack extra equipment and hearing accessories: Don’t forget to pack extra *batteries, cables and other spare equipment if you or your child uses hearing technology. When it comes to your hearing, it is always

best to over pack and have extra working equipment on hand.

Check your airline regulations about carrying spare batteries in your check in or carry on luggage. *

• Transportation security at airports and train stations: Navigating the security checkpoints at busy airports and train stations can be intimidating. To start, inform security personnel that you or your child has a hearing loss and wears a hearing device. It is not necessary to remove external hearing devices at security checkpoints. In fact, it is best to wear the hearing device while going through security. Talk to your airline for more information about security screening.

TRAVEL TIPS SPECIFIC FOR KIDS: • Use travel time to work on listening and language development: Whether you are traveling by airplane, train or car, it is great to have a few “listening” games for your child to play while they are en route to their destination. For example, in the car you can pack

your child’s favourite music and sing along, or play the “alphabet game” while driving. If you are flying, consider bringing books to read aloud, an activity workbook or a tablet/ smartphone for your child. There are a number of listening and language development apps available for children with hearing loss. It is recommended that you download this well in advance of take off.

• Calendar countdown: Particularly helpful for a child with hearing loss is to prepare them for a change in their routine by creating a calendar to count down the days before your family leaves for the adventure.

child. Talk about the items needed to pack, what is going to happen during the trip, who your family will see, how you will get there and why you are all going on this trip together.

Children tend to be creatures of habit, and many children with hearing loss are often accustomed to a routine. A change in that routine could be difficult for them, so helping your child adjust prior to your trip will make it much more fun and memorable for all!

As your child with hearing loss gets older, try letting them manage travel responsibilities themselves to teach them how to be independent and take ownership of their hearing.
