Celebrating 8 years in Browns Bay, the team at Bays Martial Art Academy have just announced a bigger and better range of options for you. With 38 age specific programs available each week the team has really kick started 2016 with the launch of an Adult Fitness Kickboxing classes. “We are proud to truly be able to offer something for everyone in Browns Bay.” says School Owner and Chief Instructor Caroline Hazelden.

So thinking about the start of the School Year, the team would like to share some ideas on talking to your child about bullies.

We know that 80% of bullying is verbal and about 20% Physical.

Verbal bullying can be more devastating over time as a bruise does go away; however constantly being made fun of has long term effects. Bullies tend to target unconfident and shy children.

In fact, parents wanting their child to have more confidence is the reason 70% of members aged 5-14 years join our Academy.

Typically, there are three choices for handling bullying. The first is to do nothing and to ignore it. The second is to run away and the third is to end it through learning how to stop it. We never encourage fighting but we all agree that children do need to be taught to stand up for themselves and how to defend themselves in case the situation ever arises.

We always recommend that parents talk to their children and let them know what is and is not acceptable should bullying occur. Your child needs to know that you are there for them. And if they are being bullied remind them that they must tell at least 3 people such as a friend, teacher and parent. It is important that they let others know so something can be done. Of course we do not want them fighting, but children must know from a parent what they can do to protect themselves. The outcome everyone wants of course is to make sure their child gets home safe and grows up to be a confident and happy contributor to our society.

Bigger and better after the fire!

Work is well under way at East Coast Bays RSA, to restore the club to full operation after the major fire that caused damage back on East Coast Bays RSA manager Sunday May 10th last Scott Evans in the area that is under reconstruction following the fire. year, Mothers Day. The fire happened around 3am on the Sunday morning in the designated outdoor smoking area. It is suspected that it may have been deliberately lit due to it happening The East Coast Bays RSA in Bute Road, Browns Bay. well after closing hours and the hotspot being nowhere near any electrical components. Investigators did not uncover any evidence though that confirmed suspicions.

The club was forced to close for two days completely with the popular restaurant opening first and then the main bar and entertainment hall opening around two months later in July, followed by the gaming room in September. The pool and snooker area and the club lounge were the areas that sustained most of the actual fire damage and are being rebuilt. While there was this fire damage, the main problem for the entire building was smoke and water damage.

Browns Bay Mag visited the building to talk with manager Scott Evans and have a look at progress with the repair of the damaged area at the rear of the Bute Road building. It appears to be business as usual for the popular club, which with 2800 members is one of the biggest in the country. We popped in around lunch time early in the week and the restaurant was humming. Fortunately the restaurant area was relatively undamaged in the fire.

“The building work started in late January after it took us some time to find a builder, with the industry being so busy,” explained Scott Evans. “Our aim is to have everything completed by early April – with a soft opening – and in full operation for ANZAC Day. Our thoughts are that we will have a grand re-opening of the whole place in early May which will be around a year after the actual fire. It will be a big party, that’s for sure.”

The rebuild of the pool and snooker area and the club lounge is a big job and involves replacing the roof and trusses, electrical and data wiring, airconditioning, painting and decorating and the installation of new furniture.

“It will be very special,” added Scott Evans. “The past year has been quite a difficult time for the club and its members, but once this has been completed things will be better than before.

We are expecting membership to be very popular with the range of upgraded facilities we will have. Our members have been very understanding, but we are all looking forward to the completion.”

Browns Bay Business Association: From the Manager

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas & New Year period. Crazy to think that we are already in the second month of February!

We are all very excited at the business association for what 2016 will bring!

BID Expansion

Currently our business association boundary only includes those businesses that premises reside from Glen Road down to the Beachfront Lane. There are however a number of businesses which reside further up Anzac Road as well as along Beach Road.

To create a more cohesive business environment the association is currently consulting with these businesses owners and landlords in order to extend the boundary. We will be running a series of informative meetings over the coming months. We will be holding a vote, should the majority of the stakeholders vote yes for the change, we will have a Browns Bay Business Association that covers all of our Browns Bay businesses. A very exciting prospect indeed!

Cairo to Cape Town

If you’ve been living in Browns Bay for a number of years, this event will be very familiar for you. The date for the 2016 Cairo to Cape Town Festival has been set for Saturday 12th March. The location remains at Village Green, and the festival will be running from 10am to 4pm.

For those of you not so familiar with the event – Cairo to Cape Town is a celebration of all things African. Live African music and performances, African food stalls and market stalls.

A big thanks needs to go to Sally Cargill from the East Coast Bays Community Project who organises this wonderful event year after year!

We have installed a number of screens that

These adverts also play on a large number in store advertising screens.

Christmas Parade & Market Day As always the Browns Bay Christmas Parade was a roaring success!

Thousands of people lined the streets to view the beautifully decorated floats and highly enthusiastic children & adults alike who were

accompanying them!

The prize for the best float was this year chosen by yours truly. The winning float for 2016 went to Torbay Play Centre. There was no doubt that the competition for the best float was close! There were a number of floats that were of an exceptional quality.

I’m looking forward already to seeing what creative ideas the community will come up with this year!

Security Patrols

You may or may not be aware but there have been a number of break-ins on the North Shore recently – this issue is not exclusive to Browns Bay. It is a sad thing to see, and we are currently working with our contracted security patrol to ensure swift action is taken on these criminals.

Christmas Parade Fun!

The annual Browns Bay Christmas Parade is legendary in these parts with big crowds enjoying the fun for all the family. The 2015 parade lived up to expectations. It was a fantastic event with many locals participating in the popular parade and thousands coming along to watch and see Santa before he set off on his big present delivery expedition. Quality hats for sufferers of hair loss

Head High is a local ‘hat’ business set up by two mums, Caroline Steele and Kate McIsaac, after Caroline’s own personal breast cancer diagnosis six years ago when she lost her hair for several months following chemotherapy and radiation.

Caroline preferred to wear hats (rather than her wig) but noticed there was very little choice available in soft, comfortable hats from headwear providers. The Ministry of Health provides New Zealand Residents with a 'hairloss subsidy' which can be spent on a wig or hats, but finding a good selection of headwear was very limited.

So by turning a negative into a positive, Caroline partnered up with good friend and sewer Kate to offer a solution and set up their headwear business Head High five years ago. They specialise in providing soft, comfortable headwear and their extensive range caters for men, women and children.

They sew their own range, plus stock Ripcurl, Buff and other suppliers, including snapbacks, beanies, and a new bamboo range from Denmark.

The strength of so many amazing people who are dealing with hair loss from chemotherapy or alopecia is humbling and being able to make someone feel more positive and confident with their look makes their job worthwhile. They have had many laughs and sometimes tears with their customers, but the lovely feedback and the hugs as people leave wearing their new hats tells them they are doing a good job, says Caroline.

Caroline and Kate also regularly visit children at Starship Oncology and do home visits for those unable to drive. They sell online via their website www.headhigh.co.nz or open their homes for private appointments to view the range of hats. Head High also wraps and attaches your message on a card to those sending headwear as a gift.

Oaktree Kindergarten celebrated its 30th birthday in late 2015. A real milestone.

The kindergarten, which falls under the umbrella of Northern Auckland Kindergarten Association, has a beautifully resourced playground on the corner of Oaktree Ave and Palliser Lane.

The Browns Bay kindergarten held its first session on September 30th, 1985. At that time a committee of local parents fundraised to open Oaktree, selling everything from fence palings to chicken manure, and rallying the support of Browns Bay businesses to reach their goal.

At Oaktree’s first session there were 10 children on the roll and a black lamb called ‘Buttons’.

Today, 80 children and a bunny named ‘Toffee’ attend.

The team at Oaktree are looking forward to being part of the community and helping children achieve their dreams and aspirations for the next 30 years!

Feature Interview: Murray Hill

Murray Hill A passion for local business

When we launched Channel Magazine five and a half years ago (followed by this Browns Bay Mag three years later), one of our key drivers was to support local business and highlight all the good things that are happening on the Shore.

In general, promoting local businesses and endeavouring to get locals to spend locally. Peter White of the Takapuna Beach Business Association was on board early as a supporter, and one of the very next calls I made was to Murray Hill, Manager of the Milford Business Association. It was great that Murray shared our desire for the magazine and, in the ensuing 60-plus issues he has been a massive supporter and contributor. What I have learnt working with Murray is he has a strong passion for ensuring that our local retail areas are doing well (technically called BIDs – Business Improvement Districts). Under his management, Milford has made big strides. For a short time he also helped Devonport form their BID to secure the funding they needed. Over the past three or more years he has added management of the Browns Bay Business Association to his portfolio with great success once again. I thought it was time we highlighted the good work of Murray Hill and he agreed to be our feature interview to kick off 2016.

Murray Hill started his working life in accountancy prior to an opportunity coming his way to get into the supermarket industry. He then spent 20 years working in the family New World supermarkets in Milford and Clendon, eventually purchasing the Clendon store and running it as the owner operator for 11 years. During the 30 years in the Foodstuffs organisation Murray was involved in various ways – two years as Chairman of the New World group, four years as Deputy Chair, nearly 20 years on the advertising sub-committee and a couple of years on the training committee. So it is really clear to see how Murray gained the experience and skills to do what he does so well today.

"My wife and I owned a property in Milford at the time that some

business owners were trying to reform the business association and I volunteered to assist, as I had previously been on the old association in the 1990’s,” explained Murray when I asked him how he got involved with the Milford Business Association.

"I heard that Milford had missed an opportunity to have a Town Centre Plan done in 2006, due to having no association for the council to contact, and I liked the concept of the new BID-style business association proposed; where every business paid a targeted rate and it brought the landlords in as stakeholders. Having family ties in Milford going back to 1958 when my father, Allen Hill, opened his first Four Square store, and knowing the background to the business community over 50 years, I knew the business district deserved better representation and could grow if united.”

The biggest challenge for todays retailers is keeping abreast of the changes and adapting to them.

Such as online shopping, how to keep in contact with their customers – a multi-media platform is really needed.

Murray says that he really enjoys what he does mainly because of the relationships built with all the stakeholders – both internal and external.

“Internally, I love the interaction with the landlords, business owners, particularly in Milford with NZRPG (mall owners), and the board members across both associations, Milford and Browns Bay. Externally, I work with a wide range of people and organisations, including residents associations, schools, churches, local boards, councillors, the mayor, suppliers, sponsors, and council CCO’s including Auckland Transport and ATEED. “I am particularly proud of the relationship with members. I think we have as good a rapport, if not better, than the big malls. Our relationship with NZRPG management and their marketing people I believe is quite unique as we work together on events, promotions and town planning."

“In the supermarket trade we were always dealing in facts and figures, so as a result, I also enjoy the KPI’s we have access to that let us know how well each town centre is performing and how our promotions and events have performed. It is really important that we are measuring the effectiveness of what we do."

What effects are the online and big store trends in retail having?

"I believe good smaller retailers with good service and product knowledge will always do well and can foot it with the chains and online options, due to that point of difference. However, they need to respond to changes around them.

"Media mix is also important and I believe retailers need to have promo and advertising activity that includes newspapers/ magazines, customer database emails, Facebook/social media, website, in-store digital signage and radio. There must be promotional activity with a budget and action plan for advertising.

An annual business plan is essential even if simple, including budget for income and expenditure.

A big key to it all, I believe, is monitoring these things as the year progresses. Working 'on the business' as well as 'in the business’ will sort the successful business owners out from those that are struggling. An online sales presence is also important, I believe, even if not a full range online. This allows 24/7 trading without

opening any extra hours.

“Our role running the BID business associations is to provide owners with guidance and assistance in all these areas. It is then up to them to accept it or not. My experience is that those who are working closely with us are doing well."

“The biggest challenge for today's retailers is keeping abreast of the changes and adapting to them. Such as online shopping, how to keep in contact with their customers – a multi-media platform is really needed. Mindset is important as well – a positive outlook together with the right tools to get the results they want."

A quality that Murray Hill clearly possesses is the ability to bring people together as a group to make things happen. This would be an aspect that would be daunting for many, but Murray says he thrives on it.

“I am used to this from my years with New World. Once again it’s about relationship building, which forms a big part of this role.

Getting along with, and supporting the objectives of, the board assists in getting the desired result for the business association and therefore the members. Both the associations I work with (Milford and Browns Bay) are run as boards of directors and this has the effect of more professional governance and delivers a better outcome for the business association as the board and manager have clearly defined roles. The board governs while the manager carries out all the day-to-day management to achieve the outcomes desired."

So what key pieces of advice would Murray Hill provide for retailers who are battling the tough new norm for retail?

"Talk to someone about it – don’t go it alone. There are plenty of agencies available that will provide assistance to businesses for little or no cost. But take notice of that advice and act on it.

Make time to work on your business. Keep up to date with trends.

Premises need to be modern, easy to negotiate, clean and giving the appearance of being as well-presented as the best in that business category. When was the last time you did a revamp? Get out every now and then and look at your opposition as you’ll always get some ideas from this."

District (BID) structure is doing a good job for business. It supports two thirds of Auckland’s town centres, which I believe is the best program for business areas, as all members vote and every business contributes to the funding of the association.”

Do the Local Boards and Council do enough for our town centres?

“Yes they do. I believe it is up to the business association to form a good relationship with the Local Board and councillors and other key council organisations (other CCO’s etc.) to work with them to achieve joint outcomes. In Milford’s case, we also work with our local resident's associations and other organisations to ensure that the ideas being put forward have universal acceptance. That way there is more weight behind the project – that's taken into account when deciding where to spend money.

The old saying is very true 'United we stand, divided we fall’.

Again, with the local boards it’s all about relationship building with them and letting them know as an association we will put in hand in our pocket as long as they back it up with funding.

I do find that approach works – hand up not hand out. Keep them informed on what as an association you are doing so they feel involved and can relate to what you are doing for the local economy. It’s all about how you approach it.”

So what are the specific challenges and things in Milford that you are keen to see progress?

"Hopefully NZRPG (Milford Centre owners) start their retail and apartment development. They are great supporters of the association and we work really well with them in promoting Milford. Their latest design has come after discussing the concepts with the local community. They have been very responsive to changes requested by locals and they have been able to incorporate into their design. Again, that relationship building scenario certainly makes things smoother when our locals are consulted. This will be the biggest single development in Milford ever, and with it will bring lifestyle changes plus consolidate the ‘Premium Town Centre’ status that is our focus.

"This NZRPG development should encourage other upmarket retailers into the area and be the start of a redevelopment of Milford into a new mixed-use town centre with people living and working in the town centre. My belief is it will also keep a lot of locals in the area, with many choosing to sell their bigger homes and opt for an up-market lock-up-and-leave Milford apartment."

Promoting, supporting and organising local community events appears to be part of the Murray Hill BID formula as well?

“Yes, these events like themed market days etc. really add vibrancy to our BID areas and are proving to be good for retailers.

We were particularly thrilled with our inaugural Milford ‘Christmas

By The Lake’ event held late last year. It was an outstanding success, as we thought it would be, and it will be back again next year, bigger and better. It was great to have so much support from

the Auckland Symphony Orchestra as well as the local board, schools and businesses. It was just the type of day we wanted to create – a family picnic environment where you could interact with friends and know the kids were safe and had lots of activities to keep them entertained. Even the bike programme in conjunction with AT was fantastic and went better than our expectations.

“We are in the early stages of organising a similar aspirational family event for Browns Bay that will take place in February next year that I believe will be very special. Browns Bay is a real family friendly community that’s already well supported events-wise by Sally and her team at the East Coast Bays Community Project.

We get a fantastic response to promotions and events that are run in Browns Bay – including retail promotions and events like the Christmas Parade and the traditional Christmas Tree Lights Ceremony. A large crowd comes out to celebrate the Christmas tree lights being turned on to start the festive celebrations.”

“We have some clear goals for both BID areas this year.

Keeping the momentum of quality events and promotions is one of the top of our goals for 2016. We have also developed strong online vehicles for both associations and will continue to develop these this year for the good of members. Obviously sales growth for our retailers in both Milford and Browns Bay is number one.

"In Milford, the opening of the brand new New World in the first half of this year will assist us in this regard. In Milford we will also be focusing on developing ‘Downtown Milford’ – the Shakespeare Road end - and there are some keen landlords working with us on this. Some street enhancements will help as well. The area I call ‘Uptown Milford’ is going particularly well so the goal is to give the Downtown area a similar boost. Bayleys – helping make wishes come true!

Children’s charity Make-AWish has recently formed a partnership with Bayleys as their Elite Sponsor and is set to push its wishgranting capability to its full potential.

Each year, there are approximately 400 children between the ages of 3yrs and 17yrs who are diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition, and therefore eligible to have their wishes granted.

With the forming of this partnership Bayleys and Make-A-Wish NZ now have a collective goal to grant every eligible child’s one true wish.

Bayleys is proud to be able to support this worthwhile charity and help give the Make-A-Wish team the ability to take their wish delivery to a new level.

Make-A-Wish New Zealand officially opened in 1986 in Auckland, and the country’s first wish was granted to Daniel, a four year old boy who had leukaemia.

His wish was to have Christmas in October. Santa and his elves arrived on a fire engine with a sack of gifts. Daniel was also given a ride on the fire engine.

Since then around 2000 wishes have been granted all over New Zealand. Every wish is unique to the child, and they are only limited by the child’s imagination.

There are more than 100 volunteers throughout New Zealand, including ‘Wish Granters’, who make the impossible possible, meeting the children in their homes or while they are in hospitals to find out what the wish will be.

Money is raised from cause-related marketing, events, sponsorship, marketing campaigns and direct donations.

The Bayleys team across the country have embraced the new partnership and are assisting not only with fundraising but also with encouraging ‘in kind’ giving from within their local communities.

Members of the Bayleys team have joined Make-A-Wish as volunteers to assist in the delivery of some amazing wishes.

Bayleys also has a team running in Auckland’s Round the Bays to raise funds for Make-A-Wish in early March.

Bayleys North Shore is committed to fundraising, ensuring those children eligible, enjoy something wonderful when life has dealt them challenges so early in life.

CAB BROWNS BAY

It is well known that the CAB services are FREE & that we value client confidentiality. Services are provided to anyone in the community, whether a resident or passing through the area.

TO COME The Browns Bay volunteers of the CAB assisted 8,611 members of the community from July 2014 to Aug 2015 with advice & interventions. We are fortunate to be able to assist the community with a wide variety of issues. This may range from Tenancy & Housing issues, education, employment disputes, consumer matters, family issues & relationship breakdowns to JP services. Vulnerable members of the community such as women, children, the elderly & people facing financial difficulties have also benefitted through referrals to the appropriate agencies for assistance. Where required, food parcels & financial budgeting advice are arranged for clients in need.

We are grateful for the relationship we have built with the Justices of the Peace. A JP is in attendance most week days for 2 hours – Phone to check times.

The paperless era of internet based information has seen a change in the availability of free brochures & pamphlets.

Information that is not available in printed form will be downloaded to clients, or if possible, it can be emailed to clients.

Browns Bay CAB continues to provide settlement information to new migrants & welcomes walk-ins & appointments. Our volunteer base consists of people from different nationalities, such as UK, South African, Chinese, Korean, Malaysian & Israeli to name but a few.

Registrations are also available for a series of FREE workshops from Feb to Nov each year.

Enquiries for volunteering are always welcomed.

Please note we are closed for the Christmas period from 24 Dec until 4 Jan. We reopen on 5 Jan. Best wishes to all East Coast Bays & Albany residents for a joyous holiday season.

Why is this important?

Photographs of 1910 (see below) show that Deep Creek was a beautiful lagoon of at least 4m deep at high tide. Today it is cluttered with mangroves and mud, & smells badly with rotting seaweed debris.

The creek exits on to the very popular Waiake Beach, Waiake means ‘Healing waters’) & flows beside a pleasant beach park. A waterfall lies hidden at its headwaters

Geoff Ockleston.

Geoff Ockleston is a well-known man around the Bays. He has lived in the area for 40 years and has a huge involvement in the community. Two key roles he plays at the moment is as Vice President of East Coast Bays RSA and as a member of the board of the Browns Bay Business Association. He is known as a great supporter of local business. Geoff spent six years as the President of the RSA and this is his second stint as the Vice President, a role that just got a bit bigger recently with the resignation of the current President. Geoff is helping to hold the fort until a new President can be appointed. Browns Bay Mag’s Aidan Bennett caught up with him for a chat in early February 2016.

AIDAN BENNETT: How long have you lived in the Bays?

GEOFF OCKLESTON: I have lived on the Shore since I was 16. I worked in the Navy, living in the Devonport area originally before moving to the Bays around 40 years ago.

AB: When did you join the RSA? GO: When I was in the Navy my club was the Senior Rating (Chiefs) Mess. But when I left the Navy I joined the RSA and have loved every minute of it. That was over 30 years ago now.

AB: What are the goals for the East Coast Bays RSA in 2016?

GO: Our goal is to involve the Browns Bay and Bays community to a greater extent and to preserve the identity of the RSA in its centenary year. It will also be great to have full use of the club once again after the fire which has caused disruption. It will be great to get back some of those members who have drifted away due to the problems with the facilities. This really is a great club to belong to. We have lots of fun and have great facilities such as the restaurant, bars, gaming, pool and snooker as well as big screens for watching sport in our lounges.

AB: You have played a big part in running the East Coast Bays RSA, it’s a big organisation. When did you first go on the committee?

GO: I joined the committee after I had been a member for around 10 years. I was the Vice President for two years, then the President for six years and am now one of two Vice Presidents, a role I have held for another two years.

AB: What is special about East Coast Bays RSA? GO: It’s part of a nationwide organisation that’s celebrating 100 years this year. It’s one of the bigger clubs in the country but it is neat that it is no longer an exclusive club for ex-servicemen, the general Bays people have embraced it as well which is great for its future. Around a third are ex-servicemen with the balance being social members who enjoy the place. It’s now a social club and a responsible member of the Browns Bay and Bays community.

AB: Why did you and your wife Pauline choose to live in the Browns Bay and Bays area?

GO: I had lived here as a youngster and just liked the area. We bought a house here and have moved four times, but never outside the Browns Bay area. When we came here it was right on the edge of the city back then, now it is the city! We have brought up four kids here, now all grown up. Two remain in the area, while two are in the South Island.

AB: What do you love about the area?

GO: Most of all it’s the beaches. We are so close to several beaches.

Browns Bay village is a great place to go with good shopping, great restaurants and cafes and a lovely waterfront. I love the cafes by the beach.

AB: What’s your favourite spot in the Bays?

GO: Waiake Beach. I swim there every day before the crowds come along!

Loving Martial Arts and Browns Bay Summer Light Brings Stability Caroline Hazelden runs Bays Martial Art Academy based in Anzac Road, Browns Bay. A growing business that really adds a great deal to the local community.

Aidan Bennett put these questions to her in early February about her passion for Martial Arts and for her local community.

AIDAN BENNETT: How long have you been doing Martial Arts?

CAROLINE HAZELDEN: I started my Martial Art journey as an Adult with Shotokan Karate in 2000. My regret is that I did not discover the benefits of Martial Arts until my 30’s. From Shotokan Karate I was introduced to Choi Kwang Do Martial Arts.

AB: How did you first get into it?

CH: Beachside Gym in Browns Bay were running a Self Defence course many years ago. From that I found out one of their personal trainers was a martial arts instructor and I basically went from there.

AB: Why is it such a good thing for people to get in to?

CH: For me it was a great way to work out, switch off the noise of other things going on and to learn something that was both physically and mentally rewarding. The majority of our members are joining for a combination of fitness, fun, focus and in many cases confidence building.

AB: At what age should people take it up?

CH: We offer around 40 age specific classes a week from three and a half years old right up to teens/adults, including our new Fitness Kickboxing programme.

AB: What is special about Bays Martial Art Academy?

CH: For us we are really focussed on family and fun. With age specific outcomes, a weekly mat chat and curriculum geared around learning in a safe and fun environment we are certainly very different from what people would expect when it comes to Martial Arts.

AB: How did you come to be based in Browns Bay? CH: We began in Murrays Bay Primary Hall and outgrew that much quicker than expected. We started looking for our own premises so we could operate full time. After much searching we were at the local Browns Bay Market and came across a great building on Anzac Road. Since then we moved across the fence to 2/44 Anzac Road. With this down the same driveway as Rangitoto Swim School pretty much everyone knew exactly where we were.

Looking at the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) Statistics, sales in Auckland were down 8.1% in November, which, in my opinion, was due to the change in buyer legislation, but December sales in Auckland were up 17.5% when compared to December 2014.

Once you take into account seasonal adjustment, the sales in fact were stronger than expected, given the new legislation change by the government.

In my opinion, vendors are getting creative and more confident with the value of their homes on the Shore and we are seeing a combination of houses up for sale with a fixed sale price, by negotiation, by auction which seems to remain the primary way forward with recent Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) statistics indicating that in the month of December 51% of all houses sold in Auckland were sold by auction.

Good news for buyers - banks are still competing for your business, with Westpac, ASB and ANZ all offering a 1 year fixed mortgage rate special of 4.39%. Interestingly, HSBC is offering a 4.25% on the same 1 year period.

CH: Yes, we are Browns Bay residents since 1998, after moving up from Cambridge to start my apprenticeship.

AB: What is your favourite local spot in Browns Bay or the Bays?

CH: Browns Bay beach with the tide out early in the morning with everyone else walking their dogs.

AB: What is your goal for 2016?

CH: I have just returned from Korea where I sat my 4th Degree Black Belt in Choi Kwang Do. So this year is about sharing my knowledge and growing the school so we can reach out to 400 members in the community. I want as many people as possible to know the benefits of Martial Arts. This year also includes travel to International Martial Arts events in Australia and the USA. AB: What would you be doing if you weren’t in the martial arts business?

CH: My trade is Signwriting and I love all things arty. I suspect I would be teaching young people involving Arts or Crafts.

Rangitoto Swim School in the Heart of Browns Bay Rangitoto Swim School is now into its 15th year of operation.

Started by husband and wife team, Peter Simpson and Jane Geldard in 2001. Both have years of experience in the aquatic industry, so it was only a natural transition to move into owning one of the top swim schools in the heart of the Shore.

The swim school has the reputation for being “The Friendliest Swim School” on the Shore. That’s because the swim school is run by a family, for families. The main objectives are what is best for the children and for them to enjoy their swimming experience. Location is key for families, and parents find the parking right outside the door invaluable.

Classes are kept small, four children is the maximum number in the Learn to Swim Programme, meaning teachers are able to spend a lot of time with each child, encouraging them, improving their technique, and boosting their confidence. Each child also receives their own special Swim Passport which records their progression through each level.

The pool is heated to 33 degrees to facilitate the baby and toddler groups. Water testing is recorded every two hours and the pool equipment is kept in optimum condition.

Wellness and Weight Management: An Inside Job

I thought this would be an appropriate topic as many of us vow in January to be healthier, lose or gain weight, exercise more, bla bla… Good ol’ New Year’s resolutions. However, a different approach is needed if it’s going to become a reality this time.

Every weight management or exercise programme claims to be THE ONE! And in some ways, they are all correct. IF you stick to them, those ‘calories-in-calories-out’ approaches work, BUT what makes it so hard to stick to them and why do we gain it all back (plus more) afterwards?

What makes us resist and sabotage our previously formidable efforts to ‘be good’? What makes us crave foods that overload our system and lurk as excess fat? What slows down our metabolism to store calories and make us feel too sluggish to get out there and move? What makes our hormones dictate what, how much we eat and whether to burn/release or store?

There is no one-size-fits all approach to health and wellness, no matter how convincing a programme may sound. However, there is ONE common place to start: INSIDE. Inside your body; inside your mind; inside your emotions; inside your beliefs.

As wellness coaches, we address what’s REALLY going on inside of you – what stress are you carrying? What strategies or changes are needed to get a handle on it? What is underlying self-sabotage? What will create passion and joy? What will remove dis-ease from your life?

What are your hormones doing and how well are all the cogs in your bodily systems working together? How much oxygen is nourishing your cells? (If being a gym bunny is not your thing, how can you just get moving and have more fun?)

Laugh more, worry less!

The other day I’m out on my mountain bike thinking about this column and what it is that I could write. As you can imagine deep thinking combined with the speed of mountain biking and tight tracks can be risky business but creativity doesn’t come through forced processes, more one where we are relaxed, when we’re doing the things that bring us the most joy. Passion brings about a sense of clarity, and when we are in our element truly awesome things do happen.

So I’m thinking do I write about my 4x4 experience to Cape Reinga, the dolphin that leaped over my kayak, or waking up on January 1st to a stream running around my tent. But then I reminded myself this isn’t Facebook, this isn’t a place for creating ‘wish you were here moments’.

So I then think what is a column, why am I here, and why do I do what I do? How do I use this space to stay true to my values of; bending perceptions, dreaming big and living for awesome? My discovery is that this is a place for minds to be filled and communities inspired and it’s great to be part of that, this is a place for people who share our beaches, who share our streets, parks, shops and neighborhoods to share what they love and for us all to connect with more reasons to adore this place we get to call home.

The Shore is simply neat and everyday we wake we want to remind ourselves that it’s a good day to have a good day. We have an abundance of opportunities that can lead to us finding the things that give us a real sense of clarity. On the Shore we can become anyone we want if we are prepared to truly believe and believing isn’t passive it’s active: We’ve got to be training: Walt Disney once said if we can aim to get 1% better every single day we would have recreated ourselves every 100 days.

We’ve got to be committed: Decide what we want to be extraordinary in and don’t let anything distract us.

We’ve got to keep going: Once we turn the tap on an opportunity we’ve got to keep catching the opportunities rather than let them absorb into the ground.

As we head back to school and/or reflect on the first month of 2016 are we where we really want to be? Do we know what we are doing?

And are we embracing everything that is on offer?

2016 is your year, it’s my year, it’s the Shores year to be truly awesome and quite possibly the most awesome yet. So be sure to do more of what makes you happy and enjoy becoming the very best version of you.

In 2015, the average sale price of homes for the full year was $817,096, an increase of 14 percent on that for 2014, and 25.8 percent over 2013's average sales price. The median price for 2015 was $755,333, 17.4 percent higher than 2014's median price and 30.5 percent higher than that for 2013.

Regular cleaning and in some cases deeper scaling (cleaning under the gum) helps prevent tooth decay, inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) and bone loss (periodontal disease). A key factor in keeping your mouth healthy is regular attendance. Patients who attend regularly tend to need the least amount of work carried out due to the fact that the mouth remains in a healthy state and problems are picked up early.

Education: Long Bay College

Traditional welcome begins the school year New teachers and Year 9 students were welcomed to Long Bay College by staff and students in a powhiri on their first day at the school.

The Long Bay College Kapa Haka group welcomed the students before a haka was performed by the 2016 Prefect Leadership Team. Principal Russell Brooke then welcomed the Year 9 students to the Long Bay College community.

2015 Academic Prizegiving Long Bay College would like to congratulate all its students on a great year in 2015. Throughout the year there were wonderful sporting achievements, incredible performances in arts and drama, a strong student leadership voice and perhaps, most importantly, achievement levels continued to rise.

At the Academic Prizegiving Head Boy Mihnea Enache received the Long Bay College Cup and Board of Trustees Prize for Dux, as well as the Cup for Excellence in Level 3 Drama and the Cup for Excellence in Level 3 Economics.

Christine Lee was the Proxime Accessit Dux and was awarded the University of Auckland Jubilee Award, as well as the Cup for Excellence in Level 3 Accounting and the Cup for Excellence in Level 3 Statistics.

Both Katie Smith and Elizabeth Maynard were each awarded a University of Auckland Scholarship. This prestigious award is for students who have demonstrated exceptional levels of academic excellence, all-round ability and leadership.

Jennifer Sweatman was awarded the David Gatward Award for Overall Excellence in Senior Mathematics, the Cup for Excellence in Level 3 Chemistry, as well as the Massey University Vice Chancellor’s High Achievers Scholarship, Natural Sciences Excellence Award, and the Innovation and Academic Excellence Scholarship.

Head Girl for 2016 Tayla Baxter received the 2015 Scott Cup for Senior Sportswoman of the Year while Jordan Laumatia-Drabble received the 2015 Robertson Cup for Senior Sportsman of the Year for his outstanding commitment and involvement in sport.

At the 2015 Academic Prizegiving, Long Bay College also recognised the enormous efforts and contributions by teachers to their students’ successes. The 2016 Staff Learning Scholarships were awarded to Michelle Gallagher who will be visiting Silicon Valley in America, and Sharon Hebden who will travel to Brisbane to attend the Edutech National Congress and Expo.

Anyone for JUMBO tennis?

Rotary Browns Bay has an exciting new fundraising event this year – they are to hold the first JUMBO Tennis tournament to be held in Auckland.

JUMBO Tennis is the brainchild of Rotary Wellington and is a fun quick fire team event in which the game is played as doubles with oversized racquets on a standard tennis court. It’s already been a big hit for many years in Wellington and recently made a debut in Dunedin.

It has proved popular with a number of celebrities including Sir Cliff Richard when he visited New Zealand. The tournaments are always held as charity fundraisers, and the beneficiaries of the Rotary Browns Bay tournament are to be the Starship Foundation and the Auckland City Mission. The tournament will be held on Friday 1st April starting around 4pm, at the Campbell’s Bay courts and clubhouse. Individuals and corporates are invited to enter teams of four for this inaugural event.

Rotary Browns Bay hosts Rosi and Tema

In the busy time before Christmas, Rotary Browns Bay was host to another ROMAC child (Oceania Medical Aid for Children) with Rosi (5) and mother Tema who were brought from Viti Levu in Fiji to Starship Hospital for lifesaving surgery to repair a faulty heart valve.

They were here for 2 months for clinics and surgery, supported by ROMAC NZ and hosted by Rotary Browns Bay. During this time they were accommodated at the very well equipped Ronald McDonald House, very close to Starship. As well as accommodation, the Ronald McDonald staff provide support, activities and a warm caring environment. After successful surgery Rosi and Tema eventually departed for home just before New Year.
