Texas Sagrantino

Sagrantino is one of the grape varieties of greatest interest to Dr. Bob Young because of its high polyphenol levels.

Simply stated, polyphenols exist in the skins and seeds of grapes, and polyphenols are powerful antioxidants.

While polyphenol levels vary on each individual wine tested, Sagrantino wines typically have even more polyphenols than Tannat wines. The 2017 Sagrantino was rated 5 hearts on a 5- heart rating scale by Dr. Roger Corder, author of "The Red Wine Diet."

The tannin and acid in this 2017 vintage of Sagrantino, in combination with its high levels of polyphenols, make it worthy of aging. It spent more than 3 years in barrel, almost a year in bottle, and it will continue to age nicely for years to come. Dr. Bob Young believes it will age longer than most wines, and he estimates that it will drink well for up to 20 years.

For a telling exercise, acquire several bottles and open one each year.
