Sharon Greenaway - writer How long have you lived in Bendigo? I moved to Bendigo in 1990 with my husband Bill and our first child. We wanted to make our own ‘bush change’ and chose Bendigo as a central place where Bill could find work.

What do you love most about Bendigo? The property where we live. It is set in bush land, with regular visits from a diverse range of wildlife. To be able to live in such a tranquil place but also only be minutes away from necessary facilities is something that we try never to take for granted. It has been a truly lovely place to raise our two children.

Your favourite thing to do in Bendigo over winter? I love winter and try to do lots of things that I don’t do when summer hits. Perhaps my most favourite thing would have to be having a bonfire with the family, toasting marshmallows and drinking hot soup.

What is one thing that people don’t know about you?

When I belonged to the service group JAYCEES many years ago I competed in an Aussie yarns competition at Pentridge prison, naÏvely believing that I might have had a chance of winning.

It was only later when I came second that I was told that the prisoners always won, no matter what!

editor’s letter Once we have all the bits and pieces together for each issue of bendigo magazine, I always seem to spot an overall theme. This isn’t always the intention, we try to make each issue as varied and diverse as possible, but it just seems to happen. Whilst working on this issue, I have noticed that the community spirit is alive and well in Bendigo. Whether it is businesses ensuring that they are working towards the greater good, or people offering advice and assistance to others, it is really fantastic to see that we are one city (or town) that is prepared to really help out.

The CvYep program is one that has brought established, talented business owners together to work with and encourage young entrepreneurs who are just starting out. For me, this program has been fantastic. We are one and a half years old now (yes, already!

This is issue number seven…) and, as editor and publisher, I have welcomed the advice of those who have come before me. I have taken on many mentors both in the media industry and outside it (and some who are possibly unaware what a constant help they are to me! I can thoroughly recommend picking the brains of those who are older and much, much wiser than you are!)

So regardless of whether you are a student, a mother, a business owner or maybe even all of those things…why not introduce yourself to someone you admire? Or, perhaps someone who could learn from those things you have already achieved. It is a rewarding process for both mentor and mentee. To check out more of those clever people, turn to page 38.

And one other thing (before you write and comment!)…you will notice that our layout is slightly different this issue. There are many reasons for this, and we are sure it will mean you get even more out of the magazine than ever before. I hope you love it as much as we all do here!

I have really enjoyed flicking, reading and looking with great interest!

I admire the way you have captured the diversity of Bendigo in your magazine, through a range of articles and photographs.

I have an idea for a possible article for your magazine which you may or may not be interested in! I have lived in Bendigo for 9 years now.

I am the Principal and teacher of the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy.

Our Drama school offers drama classes to students aged 5-17years as an extra curricular activity outside school. Most Drama schools are for students who are already brimming with confidence and theatric skills.

We on the other hand, enrol students who may be like this as well as those who may be shy, have a speech problem, troubles at school, etc. As a qualified school teacher, I have seen problems in schools with bullying, children lacking confidence and dreading the thought of speaking in front of teachers and peers.

Dear Amy, I’ve just returned from a lovely lunchbreak after unexpectedly picking up a copy of your latest issue of Bendigo Magazine. Your mag inspired me to give myself a proper break by sitting down at the lake and having a read while enjoying a bit of autumn . These past few hot months have made it uncomfortable to get out which has meant I’ve lost touch with what’s happening. Be involved!

This is your magazine, remember? So tell us what you want to see (page 12), enter some competitions to win (page 19) or even contact us for a make over or an idea. We want to hear from you!

Get green.

There are so many things you can do to look after the environment these days, and many of them require very little change in your existing day. Bendigo council can provide you with details, including something as simple as information on how to best recycle.

To see how a few local businesses are doing their best, turn to page 24.

8 Head out for lunch.

The cold weather might put you off al fresco, but there are loads of places to take a quick bite to eat and get out of the office or home for a bit. See a few example on page 50.

Take a ride.

How many locals haven’t experienced the tram? Well, you might not be keen on the tourist tour (although it is really interesting from a local’s perspective), but you sure can’t go past a great meal whilst cruising through town. See how we found it on page 53, and how the locals used to travel on page 64.

the paris end of bendigo A National Gallery of Victoria touring exhibition until the 24th June.

During the first decades of the twentieth century the ‘Paris End’ of Collins Street, as it was affectionately known, was a popular home to the artistic community of Melbourne. Many artists, musicians, writers and theatre performers lived and worked at the top end of town.

A number of Melbourne’s leading photographers including Athol Smith, Jack Cato, Julian Smith, May and Mina Moore, Ruth Hollick and Wolfgang Sievers also established studios in this thriving arts precinct. This exhibition brings together commercial and fashion photography from the early 1900s to the 1950s reflecting the changing face of Melbourne.

Meet Michelle Crosbie and Julie Lake, the faces behind Achievers Life Coaching. Michelle and Julie are regular contributors to bendigo magazine (see page 117) and will be advising us on how to get passionate, motivated and how to really live your life to the fullest.

What got you started in life coaching? Helping people get what they want in their lives is something we both really enjoy. We have very similar work backgrounds and have worked together for over ten years. We have always worked helping people make changes and improvements, either individually or in work settings. Our 20 years experience in looking at what isn’t working and finding solutions has developed our passion for making a difference Why focus on women? Women do everything! We have been there, done that, and still do. We both combine careers and growing families, relationships, and get drawn in many directions. Women tend to support their kids, families, partners, colleagues, friends…you name it! Women are there helping you out.

kirsty macculloch So many Bendigo students have dreams of jetting off to the UK to work for a few years…here is one local girl who is living the London life, working for awardwinning direct marketing company, Craik Jones.

Q. What is a typical day like for you?

A. Catch the bus to work, past London Eye, Big Ben, Trafalgar Square and get out at Piccadilly Circus. Check emails, quick team catch up.

Today I’ll have a creative review on some work for Orange. Spend some time reviewing budgets and activity for my other client Boots the Chemist (can I get them more for less is always the challenge).

Go to a meeting across London to discuss how we can integrate with a new TV campaign that’s launching in May. And get back to meet up with some of our clients to have champagne, nibbles and get 70’s style hair and make up done before our Studio 54 themed client party this evening.

Q. How did you get involved in direct marketing?

A. I studied at La Trobe Bendigo, graduating with a Bachelor of Business/Asia Pacific Studies. I majored in Mandarin and Economics and minored in Marketing and Statistics. I was always fascinated by marketing and advertising but wanted to sink my teeth into something that was really measurable. I applied (for lots of jobs!) and ended up with an entry level position at a top agency in Melbourne – Clemenger Direct about a year after I finished uni. They were great to me there and after a year of running around, mostly photocopying on Myer, they promoted me to Account Manager and let me work on Telstra, Ansett and White Pages.

Q. Were you encouraged to pursue your career aspirations? Who influenced you?

A. Absolutely. My mum in particular always taught us that there was nothing we couldn’t achieve if we set our mind to it. And the great lecturers I had at La Trobe certainly felt I was more suited to marketing than straight economics and helped me by giving good references (not sure what they would have done had I asked for references for a job as an economist!). I also had a real mentor in Melbourne, my managing director, who when I resigned wasn’t just understanding but actually set me up with interviews in London so I could follow my dream.

Q. What made you decide to move away from Bendigo?

A. I wanted to work in a top agency, which meant moving to Melbourne, and then on to London. I’ve been lucky enough to do both.

Q. Who are some of the big names you’ve worked for?

A. Telstra, Ansett, Myer, Orange, Land Rover, Gordon’s gin, Johnnie Walker, Surf, Baileys, Boots the Chemist, White Pages

Q. What are some of the great places you have managed to visit with work?

A. My work is mostly UK focused so I’ve pretty much covered everywhere in England, Wales and Scotland. Highlights would be an awards do in New York and a leadership training course in Barcelona.

Regrets would be giving up the 5 star trip to a photo shoot in South Africa because I decided I wasn’t needed and could get more done in the office (crazy!)

Q. Are there any downsides to the job and living in the UK?

A. Winters can get very long if you don’t break them up with a great trip somewhere in the middle. And the hours are long and intense but the rewards are great.

Q. And the positives?

A. I love the work here – the industry is great and I’ve been able to work on global marketing strategies, work with colleagues who are absolute gurus in the direct marketing industry and get really great experience. Personally though, the ability to travel around Europe and get to the States is fantastic, as is the great social life and earning pounds to afford it all. I’m just back from New York and am planning to spend Easter in Portugal and have a break in Barbados in July.

Q. What have been some personal highlights over the years?

A. Popping over to Paris for lunch on my 30th birthday. Meeting some of the Socceroos in Rotterdam the week before the World Cup started. Being at the World Cup. Spending millennium New Years in New York. Winning several awards for the accounts I work on. Being able to buy a tiny flat in a really good area of London.

Q. Is there anything you miss about Bendigo?

A. Definitely my family. My parents still live in Bendigo as does my sister and my two gorgeous nephews. And I have to admit it, Gillies pies as well! Seriously, I was back in Bendigo over Christmas and was amazed by all the new cafes and bars that have sprung up all over town. I managed to get to quite a few before I left.

Q. What advice would you give to other young people growing up in the Bendigo region about chasing their dreams?

A. Don’t be afraid to go after what you want. Also, talk to lots of people about it – they’re always willing to help and you’d be surprised who they might know. And if you’re thinking about London, go for it.

it’s easy being green “Think Globally, Act Locally” A simple message that encourages us to protect our natural environment by taking action at the local level. It’s about what we are doing in our homes, our businesses and public organisations: in our own backyards.

- Nancy Vaughan Collectively, we all share responsibility for protecting and improving our natural environment and we are all becoming increasingly aware of how vital it is for us to take up this responsibility and act locally. The role of businesses is vital. Thankfully, there is an increasing number of Bendigo businesses who are, indeed, acting locally to improve both the local and global environment. Here are the remarkable stories of a few of these businesses.

Watermark Paper Mill

While the mill aims to produce two hundred and fifty sheets per day, there is an over-riding emphasis on producing quality rather than quantity. In fact, what sets Watermark paper apart from most other hand-made papers is the attention to detail that ensures the final product is of such high quality and even consistency that it can be fed through printers and photocopiers. This is particularly important for the wedding invitations and gift vouchers that the paper is often used for.

Bendigo’s Watermark Paper Mill transforms waste paper, that would ordinarily end up as landfill, into beautiful handmade paper. At the unassuming Golden Square factory, the waste paper undergoes a three day journey from sloppy pulp to pristine, multi-hued packages stacked neatly in their pigeon-holes.

Recycling paper reduces pressure on forests and diverts waste from landfill, while the manufacturing of recycled paper generally uses less energy and water than manufacturing from ‘virgin’ fibre. A rising consumer awareness about enviro-friendly products and a growing desire for unique or handcrafted products are driving an increasing demand for hand-made paper.

Commencing as a craft activity at the Peter Harcourt Centre, the paper-making process eventually evolved into a business, based on the increasing demand for its range of beautiful handmade paper.

Today, Watermark Paper Mill has been operating as a business for over fifteen years, it employs thirty-two people, distributes throughout Australia and exports to New Zealand and is one of the five businesses operating under the Peter Harcourt Industries umbrella.

The lovely thick paper with its sensual texture has personality, depth and a certain…sexiness. The many caring hands that prepare and nurture the paper throughout its journey provide these desirable qualities; qualities that are generally missing from machine-processed paper stock. The human ingredient brings the paper to life.

Christine Pascoe, Business Services Manger at Peter Harcourt Industries, explained that it has been this attention to detail and commitment to quality that has enabled them to achieve export quality standards and expand the business.

A substantial proportion of Watermark’s paper is exported to a large stationery chain in New Zealand, while the remaining stock is distributed to various wholesalers and retailers throughout Australia.

Some local businesses also use the Mill’s paper, such as Silk Day Spa, which uses the paper for gift vouchers.

Watermark’s paper is created using traditional, handcrafted processes that are hundreds of years old. Painstaking care is devoted to each of the stages as the paper makes its three day journey.

Often used for wedding invitations, gift vouchers, menus and wine lists, the paper is made in different styles and colours, with natural products like flower petals often added as a subtle decoration.

The paper can also be made to order, including colour matching.

Embossing and other finishing processes are added by one of the Mill’s sister companies at Peter Harcourt Industries.

In the factory, gumboots are required in the rather sludgey work environment of the ‘wet area’. The garbage bins of pulp form a wonderful contrast to the crisp layers of creamy paper, stacked

Goldfields Revegetation Just over twenty years ago, Marilyn Sprague’s native plant nursery Goldfields Revegetation started out as a small wooden box in her backyard. These days, the wholesale and retail nursery with its extensive production area, display gardens and wildflower walk is set out on nine acres with over 2000 plant species to choose from.

Focusing on indigenous plants, the nursery now supplies to customers from all over Victoria as well as to regional councils, businesses and government agencies. The business has a strong commitment to education and raising awareness about the importance of indigenous vegetation.

There are lots of reasons why it is important to plant indigenous species in our area, Marilyn explained, “They grow well here – they are adapted to local soil and climate conditions, unlike exotic species that often require a lot of manure or fertiliser which leaches back into the soil and affects our creeks and rivers.

“They require minimal water. You need to water in your new plants, but after that they survive without watering. None of the plants in our display gardens get watered.

“They are what our native insects, birds and other animals feed on and are important habitat, and, by planting indigenous plants we are preserving the local identity of our region. Many plants from the Bendigo area don’t grow in other parts of Victoria or Australia, they are unique to our region and we should be very proud of that.”

Marilyn has observed that customers are now far more aware of the benefits of using indigenous plants and are amazed when they see the incredible range of plants available, “We have customers who are ready to change their gardens, in part or completely, to indigenous plantings. We spend an awful lot of time with people teaching them about preparing the soil and choosing the right plants. Our webpage has a huge amount of information about the different plants and a lot of landscapers use it as a reference”.

As the name suggests, Goldfields Revegetation originally started out providing indigenous plants to mining companies for their revegetation programs. However, word soon got out that Marilyn had an extensive supply of indigenous plants and that these tough and beautiful plants absolutely thrive in the harsh local conditions. Before she knew it,

Marilyn had customers lining up for her plants, so she set up a parttime retail nursery and this rapidly expanded to a full-time nursery.

Goldfields Revegetation has been blossoming ever since.

The business now employs seven people and operates as both a wholesale and retail nursery as well as providing consultancy services for revegetation projects. The nursery also has an incredible display garden, including a wildflower walk, to assist customers with their plant choices (or just to enjoy a wonder through!). Marilyn encourages people to allow enough time on their visits to walk around the display garden and enjoy the different flowers throughout the seasons.

The nursery attracts customers from far and wide. While most customers are from the Central Victoria region, stretching from Echuca to beyond Daylesford and from the Goulburn Valley across to the Wimmera, there is an increasing number of customers, attracted by the reputation of the business, visiting from Melbourne and other parts of Victoria.

Eaglehawk Recycle Shop Whenever I have visitors from afar, before I take them to the Talking Tram, the Golden Dragon Museum or the Art Gallery; before any of these worthy local icons, I insist they visit the ‘Tip Shop’.

For the Tip Shop, or more properly labelled the Eaglehawk Recycle Shop, is to me the most exciting and unique of Bendigo experiences.

It exemplifies the resourcefulness and hardiness of Bendigonians. It is the natural extension of the local tradition of prospecting and it is a stunning real-life demonstration of the ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ philosophy.

Young and old, rich and poor, side-by-side, customers scan the shelves, considering potential reincarnations of an old shower rose or army stretcher. The knowing keep their eyes peeled for the next uteload of fresh goods. For some, the treasure hunting can become allconsuming. On a recent visit, I observed one lady with a dangerous glint in her eye, clutching an entire dinner set in her arms, dropping

and breaking several china cups as she scurried across to the ‘check out area’ While a popular haunt for many Bendigonians, visitors from further afield are now flocking to the Tip Shop to trawl through the discarded delights, lured by the stories of the treasures to be found. But there is far more to the Tip Shop than its endless aisles of retail splendour.

In our time-poor and disposable society, we turf perfectly serviceable items rather than repair, reuse or just make do. The Tip Shop sells what we discard and, by doing so, diverts an estimated 4000 tons of ‘waste’ a year from the landfill. This, in turn, reduces green house gas emissions and extends the lifespan of the landfill. Additionally, by purchasing a recycled item, you are reducing the energy that would have expended creating a brand new object.

The Tip Shop was launched in 1994, born out of the parent organisation Future Employment Opportunities, under the leadership of Peter Cox. The mission was to create sustainable employment for the local unemployed. After securing land rights to the tip, Peter recruited a supervisor and some staff and began recycling and selling a limited range of products. Today, the Tip Shop has an annual turnover of $400,000 and nine full-time and five part-time staff.

The Eaglehawk Recycle Shop is one of a growing number of enterprises set up by Future Employment Opportunities. Peter Cox, CEO of Future Employment Opportunities, explained, “Rather than teach business skills in a formal class-room, we use our working enterprises to show what is important in running a business. For instance, we started off just selling the products from pallets on the ground, but soon realised we sold more if people could see the stock. From then on, whenever old iron bed frames came in, we used them to construct shelving. It was a real learning curve”.

All the workers at the Tip Shop are actively involved in the decisionmaking. “The workers have had a business meeting every week for the last 13 years,” Peter explained, “They decide what they need to buy next and what their goals are. One goal is to employ an extra person every year”.

Richard Hasseldine keeping an eye on all things green at the Bendigo Bank

The Green Bank Bendigo Bank are another local business doing their best to undertake sustainable business practices in as many ways as possible.

The bank’s Generation Green™ program, launched early this year, enables customers to offset carbon emissions produced by their home, cars or business.

The bank has contracted central Victorian firm Greenhouse Balanced to plant already cleared land (initially in the Macedon Ranges) with indigenous vegetation which absorbs (or sequesters) carbon dioxide. Over time, the plantings – which aim to mirror pre-1770 vegetation – offset customers’ carbon emissions. Bendigo Bank also encourages customers to reduce their emissions by providing discounted Green home and personal loans for incorporating simple energy and water saving measures into their homes.

In late 2006, Bendigo Bank’s new head office was formally recognised as one of the most environmentally friendly in Australia.

fashion for a cause The annual Bendigo Radiotherapy Foundation’s Fashion for a Cause moved locations this year – to Boutique Lounge Bar in Bull Street.

As always, the event was a massive success and despite the warm evening, there was little room to move once everyone had arrived.

The event not only raised money for a fantastic cause – patients needing treatment at the Bendigo Radiotherapy Cancer Centre – it also showcased what Bendigo has to offer in the way of gorgeous local fashion. A big well done to all involved! ■

giving it his all Russell Pilley doesn’t see himself as a disabled person, or even an inspiration, but while he’s proven himself right on the first statement, the second is not so true.

- Lauren Harrick “You are only disabled if you believe you are disabled, and by that I am referring to physical disabilities,” he said. “Anyone can do anything they want to do, all they have to do is have a belief in their abilities and the motivation to drive them to their final goal.”

That motivation has been a constant factor in Russell’s life, a trait which has served him well, as he has battled with muscular dystrophy all his life. “My parents were told that I couldn’t afford to live a normal child’s life because if I suffered any knocks or falls it would advance the muscular dystrophy,” he said. “Despite this, they weren’t prepared to wrap me in cotton wool, and wanted to give me as much of a normal life as possible. As an example, they didn’t want me to play football, but organised that I became a goal umpire, so I could still be part of the game. When I got older, I did twice as much as everyone else, just to prove I was as good as them, which in hindsight was probably a mistake.”

That drive to prove himself has helped Russell establish his own, very successful business, Rass Media. Rass Media is the name behind some of TV’s more memorable ads and jingles, as Russell likes to produce work that stands out from the crowd. Like it or not, Russell also stands out himself, because he’s the one in the wheelchair. It’s been 15 years since he first went into the chair, something he says was a tough decision.

“The first couple of years I was in and out of a manual chair because

I could still walk a little bit. I got to the stage where I had to make a decision whether to go into a chair fulltime. This was a very hard decision to make because I never looked at myself as having a disability. I decided I would go into an electric wheelchair, and by doing this I got my full independence back and I was ready to take on the world.

“One thing I always remember my father telling me when I was a bit down was, ‘I cried because I had no shoes, until I met a man who had no feet’. This is how I live my life, no matter how hard it gets, there is always someone worse off than myself.”

Russell has strong opinions on disabled people in the workforce, he himself having experienced varied careers before establishing Rass Media ten years ago. “I’m a great believer in the government initiative which says disabled people should be given work because there’s no reason why they can’t work,” he said.

Russell has worked at a wholesale butchers, the Bendigo Jockey Club, in the public service and most notably, for community radio station 89.5 Fresh FM. “If you go there and you’ve got media in your blood, it will bring it out,” Russell said. After working in sales and doing a spot of presenting, Russell decided he wanted to “play with the big boys of commercial radio and commercial TV”.

But The Fresh, or 3CCC as it was known back then, is still dear to his heart. Followers of local issues will know the station’s licence renewal

Anyone can do anything they want to do, all they have to do is have a belief in their abilities and the motivation to drive them to their final goal.

is currently in doubt, and Bendigo could loose the broadcaster to the likes of ABC news. “I think it’s a shame that after so many years an organisation like 3CCC, which has helped a lot of people hone their skills, not just me, but stacks and stacks of people, could be lost,” he said. “Community stations are the only way most people can learn about the industry, you can’t just walk into a commercial station and be involved.”

The skills honed at 3CCC and state-of-the-art technology have seen Russell take his business around Australia. He has some big name clients, from new car dealerships to restaurants to major retailers but he has a real soft spot for the small players. “The thing that really makes my job worthwhile is going with businesses which have just started up,” he said. “You get to watch them grow and feel part of it, live everything with them, live their successes and their down times, that’s the exciting part about it.”

Rass Media is a one-man empire, with Russell donning the hat of creative director, administrator and chief coffee maker, and it’s a 24seven commitment. “I have a voice-activated tape player beside my bed,” he said. “The best ideas hit you at 3 am, and if you don’t record them you wake up at 7am and think ‘what was that?’. If I don’t get them down I tend to dissect them and rearrange them in my head.

The first idea is always the best one.”

Being surrounded by production equipment and technology in general suits this ad man, a self-confessed “toy lover”. “I love my motor sports and I love my toys – I’m a real toy person, he said. “I saw a jet ski one day and I thought, ‘I’ve got to have that’, I can never use it but I’ve now got a jet ski sitting in my shed. I’ve also got three cars, my favorite being my XR6 Turbo which I have had some work done on

“When I was younger I raced go-carts, much to my mothers’ horror.

From that I went on to rallying, which I was not very good at and soon learnt that this was not my forte. Now I prefer to watch the professional’s race. I am one of the sponsors of an Aussie race car, driven by the very talented Ben McCashney, who I believe in the next few years will be piloting a V8 Supercar. I have been fortunate to meet and form friendships with race car drivers and teams.”

In fact, Russell says one of the highlights of his life so far has been spending an afternoon with the late Barry Sheene, motorcycle Grand Prix world champion. Russell is a naturally competitive person, and although he can’t pursue this nature on the race track, he finds plenty of other ways to show it. “The one thing that gets me really motivated to succeed in anything I do is when somebody says ‘you can’t do that’! That was said to me when I decided to open my advertising agency – I was told you will never make it work, and that was over 10 years ago.”

Russell also credits a lot of his success to his daughter, Adrienne.

“Adrienne has inherited a love of the media, and at 17, she is already proving that she has a natural talent. She is without a doubt the best thing that has ever happened to me and her support has always helped me too.” bendigo magazine does believe Russell is an inspiration, to others in wheelchairs, to business owners and sports fans. “If what I achieved motivates either a person with a disability or an able bodied person to get out there and have a go, then that is a real compliment,” he said. ■

Communication with staff from all three businesses is vital to make sure we understand all of our client’s individual needs.

Often these duties are put on hold if the sales team requires help showing customers around the health club which I will jump up and do.

11.30am Help a client with exercises in the gym (it is always hands on when someone is needed).

11.45am Oops! There’s a mess in the gym, so I will grab the vacuum cleaner to clean it up.

“I know! It seems like a crazy life! On a non-typical day, I might go to Melbourne to meet with Australian Institute Directors, or for events, conferences, researching equipment or networking. I will also take time out to attend school and kinder events, and I make sure I spend one workday per week at home with my youngest. Weekends are sometimes maintenance days with my husband, back at work getting jobs done that you just can’t do during the week. The kids come with us and we often run or ride our bikes to work to make it fun for everyone. When I do get the time to relax? I love to go running, work out, do some gardening or go somewhere nice for breakfast.” ■ 33

- Sharon Greenaway Chief Executive Officer of C.E.B., Janet Russell, explained that in order to better serve the changing needs of the community of the City of Greater Bendigo, the school is evolving. Janet’s vision is to see the school leading the market place with courses that have been inspired by community input as well as new concepts developed by her staff; ideas such as Bollywood dancing.

Donna Petrusma, Manager of Community and Short courses, agrees.

“To meet the demand of successful courses such as computer training and languages there have been more programmes added. And as a result of listening to the community, a course on the topical issue of grey water gardening has also been included.”

Anyone who is aged over 15 years can enrol in these or any of the short courses.

Janet emphasises just how diversified C.E.B. has become, “An area that perhaps people are not familiar with associating with C.E.B (a registered training organisation) is the growing one of accredited courses such as food handling and hygiene and First Aid Level 2.”

Janet explains that C.E.B. especially had a “terrific reputation” with its Certificate III in Aged Care. These courses can be transferred to other registered training organisations within Australia.

Another thing many people may not be aware of is the role C.E.B. has in offering a youth pathway program for students aged 16 years and over who have fallen out of mainstream school. These students may have left studying in Year 10 but are now completing studies that are similar to Year 12. While this program leads a large number of students into employment, there may also be further opportunities to study at T.A.F.E., going on to completing V.C.E. or to a foundation program at university.

On line courses for the community are also beginning to be offered. As well, more life long learning courses are being offered on weekends.

Professional development services for the corporate sector are another area that the school is heavily involved in.

C.E.B. really is all encompassing, as it caters for a wide cross section of the community. “On any given day at the school you might have a class with a 15-year-old sitting next to an 80 year old, or a professional white-collar person sitting in a class with a person from 34

the manufacturing industry,” explains Janet.

“The idea of the short community courses being only for pleasure is not really accurate as most people are doing the course for a specific purpose,” says Janet. “For example, consider a business person doing the QuickBooks program, or the over 50’s coming in to learn how to use the Internet so that they can speak with their grandchildren living on the other side of the world.”

Bendigo Adult Literacy Group Inc. is also based at C.E.B. and offers adults the opportunity to gain more confidence with their reading, writing and numeracy. Once again there is no stereotypical person who would attend this course. Students might include a businessperson who has gotten where he/she has with their knowledge but is now looking at promotion where report reading and writing will feature more in their work. On the other hand the student could have a mild intellectual disability and as Janet explains, Bendigo Adult Literacy Group Inc. is seen as a specialist in that field.

I asked Janet why people should come to C.E.B. instead of other training organisations for courses such as Aged Care.

“Whilst there are about six groups around Bendigo offering this course, some people simply don’t want to go to an organisation that they perceive in being too large to cope with,” Janet says. “In contrast C.E.B. is generally seen in the community as being more accessible, more personal, less threatening, non–intimidating and a little less bureaucratic!”

“Recently we had a woman whose mother and aunt had completed the aged care course previously at C.E.B. They were so pleased with it that she too only wanted to do it there.”

The beautiful old building of Lancewood which C.E.B. has leased from the current owners, the Department of Education, since 1992, is a wonderful base for the school and on the whole serves the school well. Like the school, Lancewood has undergone changes since John Bain for Thomas Hawkey, a Cornish miner who had made his fortune through investing in local mines, built it between 1881 and 1882. After Hawkey died in 1886, the Mueller family bought the building and raised their family there. At least one member of this family lived at Lancewood until 1950, when it officially became the

teachers’ residence for the Education Department. When Continuing Education took up the lease it spent $750,000, money donated by itself and community members, on restoring the building to its current state. Take a look next time you are close by, you will see examples of a bygone era, with the beautiful staircase and partly uncovered wallpaper. Sometime in 2007 the Education Department will be funding a new roof for Lancewood, with plans for it to be built during school holiday time.

As new ideas are developed within the school, Lancewood is simply not large enough to cater for all the classes. As well as using various secondary colleges and community halls for some classes, there is a large tin shed further down McLaren Street from Lancewood, which C.E.B. owns and uses for art and craft classes. The land directly opposite is also owned by C.E.B. and will undoubtedly be used by the school in the future. The school aims to run as ‘a not for loss entity’ and as such needs to map out its finances and see how developments can be funded. While Government funding for special interest programmes was pulled about three years ago, the school still offers concession fees.

“We really aim to provide high quality learning and community engagement opportunities,” says Janet. “C.E.B. is a learning place for the community and…is the largest provider of special interest courses in the city of Bendigo.” Janet added that community input as to how successful or not a program was is an integral part of the running of the school.

“C.E.B. is also one of the few forums available where people can come along and meet new people and at the same time learn, either for the sake of it or for work.”

the bendigo gem club Most know Daylesford as Victoria’s spa capital but did you also know it’s garnet country?

- Lauren Harrick Members of the Bendigo Gem Club do, so when they make the annual pilgrimage each February, it’s not facials or massages they’re craving. It’s the January birthstone, that merlot-toned gem that shines like fire when polished to perfection. And sapphires too, if luck’s on their side.

For the gem club is not just interested in cutting, polishing and setting gems stones, it’s also into finding them. Club secretary Ray Jacka explains that Tipperary Springs at Daylesford is the best area locally to find stones.

“The earlier members of the club did a lot of fossiking and they recorded the areas they went to, so we just follow those records,” he said. “You’ve got to know what you’re looking for and after that it’s just a lot of luck and a lot of digging.”

And a lot of fun, too, if the club newsletter is anything to go by. An article in the Bendigem summarised this year’s trip beautifully, starting with the howling gale that Daylesford is also famous for.

“Cold sausage sandwiches and a few hot pies washed down with lashings of hot tea soon had everyone warmed up and then it was off to the falls, visions of gold dust and garnets filling our thoughts,” the writer stated. “George and Rolly got to work with their detectors and found some truly fine examples of bottle tops and ring pulls, these will no doubt take pride of place on the mantle piece when cleaned up. Lorraine found five stones which she has almost convinced us are garnets but we really won’t know until they have been assayed by the Gemological Association, they also bear a strong resemblance to Roadsideus Australianous.”

Now that’s one you’ve probably never seen in a jeweller’s window.

Like most hobby clubs, this one’s just as much about socialising as it is about the gems. There are over 100 members registered and while not all attend weekly, most do turn up to club barbecues. The Galvin Street club rooms are open all day Wednesday and Thursday and some Saturday afternoons.

The day Bendigo Magazine dropped by, several members were working on their latest creations, while another was showing a potential new recruit the way around the machinery.

“We’re getting a lot more younger members coming all the time,” Ray said. “We’re having a generational change at the moment where the older people are backing off and we’re trying to rope the younger ones into committee roles.”

Twenty-something Lela Bell has recently signed up as publicity officer.

And she has a big job on her hands this year. In June the club will celebrate its Ruby anniversary. For the gem challenged among us, that’s 40 years. It will also be the Pearl, or 30th, anniversary of the gem club’s annual exhibition in September.

The exhibition is a chance for club members to show off their talents to Bendigo, plus it’s the one and only annual fund raiser. Last year’s event saw enough money raised to renovate the work room, buy some new machinery and upgrade the motors on the cabbing machines.

Cabbing is the process of creating a cabochon cut gem, just one of the many skills to be learnt at the club.

“The members are always willing to teach anyone else who wants to learn,” Ray said. “It’s all done pretty ad hock at the moment with members passing on what they know.”

That knowledge includes faceting, casting, enamelling, cabbing and silver work, the latter being the thing that attracted Lela to join.

“I’m more interested in silver work,” Lela said. “A lot of people think the gem club is just older geologists in tweed suits talking about rocks but that really is a fallacy.”

“There’s so many people with different interests and some people are really creative when it comes to making jewellery. And it’s just really

interesting to meet new people. Everyone is welcoming and helpful and so willing to share their craft.”

The club rooms alone are worth a visit for anyone interested in gems, crystals or minerals. Display cases of coloured beauties line the wall.

Fur-like gypsum of ice green, hematite as black as night and ancient eggs of amethyst are truly captivating. Many of the samples were found by club members, and as Ray points out, “one member even discovered a mineral that had never been found before”. His find was written about, and it may even feature in one of the books in the club’s library.

Many of the polished gems in the room started life as dirty-looking stones, worn into ripples from water in a pebbled stream, or dug from the earth with a little effort and a lot of knowledge. “And this is the kind of thing that can come from it,” Ray says, as he topples a jar of shining amethyst into his palm.

The same could be said about the gem club. Look past the fading club room facade and polish back the rough edges and you’ll find something quite beautiful. The gems are lovely and the people even lovelier.

Antoinette Danaher Antoinette Danaher was the General Manager of first MOJO MDA and then DDB Needham in Melbourne during the 80’s and 90’s.

Antoinette had a positive mentor in her boss, Michael Dolan, who taught her to make her clients heroes by “producing outstanding results for them based on sound strategies and about making sure that integrity was always in place.” Antoinette left Australia to travel and decide what she truly wanted to do with her life. Moving to Bendigo was a decision based more on who she was working for, as opposed to what work she was doing, and now she offers her skills in marketing, public speaking, strategic planning, sales and so much more with her own company, Uncommon Solutions.

“My experience with Michael (Dolan) was invaluable to me, he literally changed my life. He had made mistakes, been ripped off, had wasted opportunities and had also enjoyed great successes. His willingness to unselfishly share his thoughts saved me time, money and lots of embarrassment!

“I love being able to meet all these young business people and pass on to them some of what I have been given (and learned the hard way) over my life.

“Lisa and Lisa are working hard to position themselves as the ‘go to’ destination in the Maternity and Baby segment in the region. Being their own ‘target market’, they understand what will work in their shop because they know what their customers really need. Lisa & Lisa Parkinson Lisa Parkinson and Lisa Parkinson (nee Holstein) are sisters-in-law co-owing and running local maternity store, Bellies to Babies. Lisa Parkinson spent many years working as Customer Service and Sales Manager for many Hertz Rentals locations around Melbourne before moving to Bendigo and Managing Video Ezy. The “other Lisa” spent several years with NAB, as Product Manager for Superannuation and Retirement products. We had often talked about doing something together not necessarily with a lot of conviction at the time but then once Lisa moved to Bendigo and the only Maternity shop in Bendigo at the time closed we knew that we had the perfect opportunity to fill the gap in the market and it was a case of ‘lets just do it.’

“You have great ideas and big plans but probably look at a lot of things with rose colored glasses – of course you think your own ideas are good. That is the benefit of being in a partnership - you have different points of view which can provide both encouragement and balance. Having a mentor helps to either assure you that you are on the right track or redirect you if you are heading off on a tangent. It also clarifies for you basic principles for good business management helping to understand your bottom line and take a realistic view of your current position as well as helping to define your goals in a way that makes them more achievable.

“Our relationship with Antoinette has been very positive and reassuring in terms of our business approach, she has pointed out a number of things that we were aware of but not doing anything about and that has forced as to take action in certain areas that were stagnant.

“For two people who are new to owning a business, just feeling as though you have that extra bit of support and someone to bounce ideas off who is independent to you and your business can be a real boost to moving forward and taking on new challenges with confidence.” ➤ 39

Brendan Tuddenham began his apprenticeship at the age of 17 and completed the full four years of his trade learning at the Metropolitan in Bendigo with Alistair Punshon. He moved on to further develop fine dining experience at Warrenmang Vineyard & Resort as second chef (Warrenmang was rated with 3 Chefs Hats from the Age Good Food Guide during this time). He then worked at top restaurants in Brisbane and Melbourne and then returned to Bendigo for a job at Bazzani as second chef, which then led to head chef position, and ultimately purchasing the business three years ago (along with Kathie Bolitho). During this time, Bazzani have changed their name to BAZZANI ITALIANO while continuing to provide a quality experience for diners, through top quality produce, everything made on premise by passionate chefs and a commitment to being the best they can be.

Clare Fountain, the founder of Sorted Business Administration Services, has spent nearly two decades managing businesses across the globe, working in a diverse range of industries from hospitality to furniture design. Her experience covers all aspects of running a successful business: production management, financial planning, cash flow management, marketing, press liaison and office management.

Mark Hilson started his career in business technology with Sandhurst Office Systems (SOS) which then merged with another local IT service company: Compumend. Mark then worked in IT within local government, first with the City of Greater Bendigo and then with the Moonee Valley City Council. After spending five years working in Melbourne (working up to the role of General Manager from Technical Support Manager), Mark decided it was time for a tree change and took on the role of IT Manager for the North West region with the Department of Sustainability & Environment (DSE). Due to a decision made by the current state government to relocate all regional based IT managers to Melbourne, Mark took the leap and started Central Victorian Technology Services.

Jason Mulquiny The youngest of eight, Jason Mulquiny grew up in Charlton and has worn many hats despite his young age: baker, auto mechanic and manufacturing to name a few. Jason has run a few businesses in the past, but started in a new industry in September 2006 when he purchased Bendigo All Seasons Heaters & Pools in September 2006.

A name change (to the very clever Splash & Burn) is just one of many stamps he plans to place on the business.

I cannot believe that this fine mag actually called me back to do another column.

It was a full house at Ultrasun in late March as plenty of people turned out to learn about what the next season had in store for our faces.

I thought I was being punk’d. But luckily, I wasn’t. Thanks to the proof readers who fixed up my spelling too. You made me look really educated.

With a lot happening around the area over the past few years, I’ve been wondering something about B-town. Are we a big country town or are we a small city?

I personally think Bendigo is a great city with a country-smoothness about it.

I’m not saying “on your way home from clubbing, do a bit of spot lighting”, but I think there is a happy medium between city & country. A “Cintry” if you will. Due to the pox factor of that just-made-up-word, I better try and suss out an answer to this, quick!.

If this was a court case, I’d wanna be defending the “City” party. But this isn’t going to be some Boston-Legal-style easy case. Why? Because this is not an easy question. When you drive in to Bendigo from the Calder, the signs say “CITY of Greater Bendigo”. Question answered? I don’t think so, love. Just because the name suggests “city”, doesn’t mean that we are one.

It’s a bit like 2 Minute Noodles. Yeah, the name suggests you will be chowing down on some of the finest student cuisine within 120 seconds. But get the saucepan out, boil the water, drop in the noodles, sweep up the crap bits that hit the floor, there’s three minutes there…IT’S A SHAM!!!!!!

Ok, are we a country town then? Again, no.

We are home to crackin’ nightclubs, top notch restaurant & café precincts, and shopping-a-go-go. A plethora of the big smokes’ finest, right on our door step. On the other hand, we also host award winning wineries, cattle farms, poultry farms, horse studs & dairy farms.

So now you see our dilemma. It’s a chameleon that won’t stop changing.

Take this for example. I’ll be sitting in Bull St at The Match, having a latte, looking at people that are stocked with the latest fashions they’ve just purchased, then a ute with a few eight foot aerials, mud flaps to fit a roadtrain and a bull bar that could stop Batman, cruises past. No one bats an eye lid!

That would say to me “COUNTRY!” But before you leap up and down with glee like a McLouds Daughter, think about this…

A mate and I had to get some horse supplies from one of those farm supply shops. The attendant walks out in the expected gear. Flannel. Denim.

Blundstones. Tally Ho behind the ear. But, hang on. What’s this I hear from the back office? Is that the Ministry of Sound Annual on the office CD player? It is!

Ok, this is seriously doing my head in.

Farmers with true 1080 progressive high-definition LCD screens.

Girls in the latest designer gear that know how to dismantle and reassemble a Datsun Carburettor.

But that’s the cool thing about this place.

Going out meeting people is like Russian Roulette. Am I going to meet the next Lee Kernaghan, or the next club hero? Or the next Molly Meldrum if you wanted both in the one package…

I think I’ll have to put this into some weird, tricked up, almost superhero / fairytale type of category.

By day, a casual place filled with families much ado about their business.

But by night…a mecca of bass, parties, style and colour.

Just make sure you are home by 1am or you could [apparently] turn into a pumpkin. I rest my case… ■ 45

danny clapp Danny Clapp has become well known as Bendigo’s Good Guy since opening his Good Guys franchise in December of 2002. After living in Bendigo for the last 21 years, Danny can well and truly count himself as a local, and knows a thing or two about what is good about Bendigo. We asked him about his favourite things…local or otherwise!

parwill swill Jeff Williams and Michael Parry first got into the fruit wine business as a hobby, after drinking home brewed beer under a plum tree one New Year’s Eve. - Kristen Allender It was a party at a friend’s place in Bendigo. “The plum tree was just really heavily laden with beautiful plums, ready to eat, and so I can’t actually remember whether he suggested it or I did, but certainly one of us said that we should have a go at doing something with the fruit.

So he came around here a couple of days later with a couple of bags full and an old recipe book he’d got from an op shop, I think, and away we went,” says Jeff.

This was at Jeff’s property near Knowsley. Pleased with how their first batch came out, they began to think they were on to something, and soon after a friend offered to buy some, asking what it was worth. At the time, Jeff knew he would soon be retiring from his work at Telstra due to muscular dystrophy, so he wanted to try something new. He decided to go to BRIT (Bendigo Regional Institute of TAFE) to study winemaking.

“It was such a fascinating hobby that we just kept making more and more of it. It was still well and truly a hobby though. Then when I went off to study winemaking I still wasn’t convinced that we would go into business.”

Jeff and Michael borrowed the BRIT wine filter with Jeff returning it along with a six pack of their wine as thanks, and as an example of their work. That very day a wine buyer from Melbourne was at BRIT and became their first commercial customer.

“He was rapt. They took something like 1,300 bottles that year and away we went. That was the start of it. That was what really convinced us that there was a commercial market.”

Michael and Jeff started winemaking in Jeff’s kitchen, moved to the garage, then advanced to a small shed and are now in a big shed on

the property. They are hoping to expand further in the next two years.

Parwill Swill buys in the fruit used, instead of having a large orchard.

Jeff is in his sixth year of wine study and will graduate this year with his Diploma of Wine Technology at Dookie through the University of Melbourne.

Michael’s wife Cheryl now works full time in the business, mostly in marketing, having completed Certificate III in Food Processing (Cellar Operations).

“We had a huge party the day we shifted from the little shed up to [the big shed]. We had a sign slapping ceremony where we took the sign from that shed and finally slapped it up here on the wall and put the ‘Open’ sign on. That was a great moment. We had neighbours up and down the street as well as anyone who has ever helped, so it was quite a crowd. It had a real MCG car park feel to it,” recalls Jeff.

Jeff only knows of two other producers of fruit wine in Victoria, but Parwill Swill (taken from Jeff and Michael’s surnames) has been working with different types of fruit. “We’ve got six varieties now.”

They started with plums and have now branched out to apricots, feijoas, nectarines and cherries. Prickly pear is their “latest and weirdest one”.

In between, there have been batches done with other fruit that have not worked out.

“Or things that might have made a perfectly good wine, but just didn’t sell. There have been a few. We will make a small batch and take it to market and see how it goes. Last year it was the cactus wine - the prickly pear. We’ll probably end up making a big fuss when ➤ 47

we’ve got enough of it to promote. The curiosity factor is just amazing.

It sells itself.” The cactus wine came about after a farmer who had land overrun with cactuses approached Jeff at the Heathcote Show to see if anything could be done with it.

“We don’t want to go on forever and have a million different varieties because that is impractical if you’re doing tastings and so on. Anything up to ten varieties probably would be our overall game plan.”

Jeff says he is a frustrated engineer, but the winery has certainly given him an outlet for inventing. Like converting a washing machine to get rid of the lumps, stones and skin pulp from the fermented fruit. The device has: “brand new hoses so the food is not coming into contact with someone’s old sock residue. The fermented fruit is spun really, really quickly and the good part comes out the hose and gets pumped into the tanks. And the bad part gets scooped out and gets used as road base actually.”

An ex-hospital crash cart and delivery table are used in the winery for new purposes. “A lot of our equipment are things we’ve cobbled together ourselves or had made to our own designs because you can’t use the standard winemaking equipment for what we do. They’re all designed to take grapes off stems and to press soft squishy bags of juice, which is what a grape is, whereas we have to deal with much stronger fruits.

“We’ve had to design our own processes too. We follow the basic procedure of winemaking. It would be the same for us as it would be for most other people but the specific challenge is how to get the fruit ready for each of the various stages.”

Cheryl took some of their fruit wine to Singapore last year, where their 2002 Blood Plum “Roadside Rosé” won the Premium Gold Medal in the ‘Sweet and Fortified Wines’ class.

The market is: “Untapped, largely speaking.” Jeff plans to recruit some agents in Melbourne. “Cheryl has done a very good job around Central Victoria, but Melbourne is the big market, and so far we haven’t really made much of an entry into it. That’s the next step on the line and the export sales.”

They have the right attitude for it. There is a coat rack on one of the walls in the winery, with three plastic swords hanging from it, one for each of the partners. That is due to a speech by winemaker Michael Glover, from Bannockburn Estate on the Bellarine Peninsular.

“He said it was one thing to make good wine, and its one thing to do it differently, but that doesn’t get you anywhere unless you promote it. And he said in his opinion every winemaker should be equipped with a sword so they could duke it out, and that was basically a metaphor for saying that everyone – especially on a small scale – tries their hardest to do things differently and to be unique in their own special way. And the sword represents that difference, and to actually go into battle that’s when you promote yourself.”

When it comes to being different, Parwill Swill has certainly succeeded.

the expert chef corn fritters with bacon and grilled tomato - serves 4 ingredients & directions • ½ cup plain flour • ½ tsp baking powder • Pinch of paprika • 1 tsp sugar • ¼ cup of milk • 1 cup corn • ¼ red capsicum • 2 spring onions • 2 tsp fresh coriander • 2 tsp fresh parsley • 1 egg • Salt and pepper to taste • 1 rasher of bacon • 1 tomato • Rocket • Red onion • Sweet chilli sauce • ½ tsp Balsamic Vinegar • 1 tsp olive oil

Finely dice capsicum, coriander and parsley. Slice the spring onion.

Strip the corn from the cob. Make the batter by whisking together flour, baking powder, sugar, milk, egg, salt and pepper in a stainless steel bowl. Fold through corn, onion, capsicum, parsley, paprika, coriander.

Scoop 2 spoonfuls of the mix onto a grill until golden brown and then turn. Grill bacon and tomato to your liking. Make salad with rocket, red onion, balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Layer salad, corn fritters, bacon and tomato and serve with sweet chilli sauce. ■

white chocolate and mascarpone cheese cake - serves 12 ingredients & directions • 200g cream cheese • 1kg mascarpone • 2 tins condensed milk • 500g white chocolate • 3 gelatine leaves • 1 vanilla pod • 500g Marie biscuits • 400g butter Melt butter and combine with crushed Marie biscuits. Press into 20cm spring form tin and refrigerate for at least 10mins.

Heat condensed milk and add white chocolate to melt. Fold through mascarpone and cream cheese. Dissolve gelatine and scrape vanilla bean and add to the mix. Pour over base and set for a minimum of one hour. ■

a quick lunch From winning that important deal, enjoying a bite with friends or just taking some time out during a stressful day, Bendigo has a great range of lunchtime venues to cater for all scenarios. Hayden McDonnell has given us an insight into some of them…

The Essence has built up a nice little reputation as a lunchtime specialty for Bendigonians looking to eat out come midday. The Menu is reasonably priced with a great range of foccacia’s and paninis, along with your traditional sandwiches and salad rolls. Those being a little more adventurous might like to imbibe the Essence’s range of hot foods including, risotto and pasta specials, homemade sausage rolls and lasagne, or an all day breakfast. Any one of the mains finished off with one of the best coffees in Bendigo will set you back on average around $10 to $12. Not a bad price for good quality food and excellent service.

One of Bendigo’s trendier places to eat is GPO on Pall Mall. With plenty of room to corner your client to try and ‘seal a deal’, the GPO has enough beers on tap to turn a business lunch into quite a boozy affair. The traditional Italian style flat bread (from $15 to $19) goes well with a glass of red, although their new lunch menu offers plenty of choices and there’s also a great range of desserts for the sweet tooth citizens out there. My advice: make an arvo of it at the GPO, leave room on the corporate card, and ensure that your diary remains clear for the rest of the day!ns

The Olive has plenty to choose from on its extensive menu from wraps (around $14) to gourmet pizzas ($10) and anything in between. All food is of excellent quality, and the best thing is that you’ll get your lunch fairly quickly, even if you are on a tight schedule.

The Wine Bank do a great range of Tapas ($4 each, minimum of 3) and bruschettas ($5) if you’re after a light lunch. However there’s also a good selection of specials ranging from Porterhouse Steak Sandwich ($14), Tuscan Bread Salad ($12) and Tuna salad ($16) for those looking for something a little more filling. Add in your coffee to finish off and your looking at around the $25 mark for a nice little lunch package. ■

It’s not every day you’ve got time on your hands to enjoy Bendigo’s surrounds during your lunchbreak, so for a quick hunger fix then back to your office, Po Boyz in Hargreaves Mall is the perfect take away option. Rolls and wraps can be filled with virtually anything you want, there’s also a great range of pizza subs and even a breakfast menu.

And then there’s the famous hot chips experience. $4 will get you a mountain of chips with cheese and gravy which is a task on its own. I managed about half the serving on top of a chicken and salad roll and felt like a nap afterwards! I found Po Boyz a filling and economical experience. It’s a place all lunchtimers should experience.

- Sharon Greenaway My husband Bill and I have been like that with the Bendigo trams, having only ridden on them when the children were younger and they wanted to ride with Santa. So when the opportunity arose for us to have a romantic dinner on board the newly revamped Bendigo restaurant tram, ninesevensix, we eagerly said yes.

In January of this year, after eight years running as the café tram, it was time for the former 1952 Melbourne SW6 tram to get taken off the road. It was only for three weeks while the tram had work done to it, including respringing, in order to give customers and staff a more comfortable ride. The tram was also repainted with its new name, ninesevensix (the number of the tram carriage).

As the tram travelled along McRae Street toward Bendigo, Bill and I enjoyed looking at the sights of Bendigo at a much more leisurely pace than what we would normally take, usually it’s a rush (according to speed limits of course!) through from one end of town to the other.

We discovered just how busy a Saturday night in Bendigo has become.

As well we saw changes to the town, such as new shops that we didn’t know of. During this initial period I must confess to being a little self-conscious, sitting in the tram while people stared in the windows, but as the sun started setting a feeling of being enveloped in our own private world took over. The music softly playing in the background and the chatter from other patrons enhanced this feeling.

Bill and I joined a nice mix of people, including a family with a young boy and several groups of friends, on a mild February night at the Central Deborah Gold Mine, ready to board the tram for a 7:30 pm departure. We found a table for two, which had comfortable seating and, Bill was pleased to find, plenty of legroom. Ready for us to nibble was an appetiser of a colourful selection of dips and biscuits.

As we got going, chef Garry Nish welcomed us on board the restaurant, introducing his staff and then went through the choices we had for entrée and main course, (we would find out about dessert later). Entrée was a choice of roasted wattle seed pasta or a Moroccan prawn salad; for the main course we would have a choice between a rack of lamb, chicken breast wrapped in bacon served in a creamy

Entrée came and the chatting and laughter died down as people started eating their second course. I asked Geoff about the wines the restaurant served. “I think people like the idea of [us serving] local wines,” he said as he listed the various wines we had to choose from.

Tonight, most of the wines were from ‘Waterwheel’ at Bridgewater.

After what I thought was only a short time, we travelled to Bridge Street where the driver swapped ends in order to take us back to ➤ 53

the tram depot for a break and a short look around. I was surprised to see that we had been on board for around fifty minutes; the time really did seem to go fast.

After about ten minutes at the depot, giving people a good chance to stretch their legs, have a loo break and take photos, it was time to reboard the tram. Just before getting on, Garry announced that as we ate our main course, we would feature in some of the new promotion photographs that were being taken by the Bendigo tramways. He asked us to give the photographer a wave when we saw him at various locales. I liked Garry’s friendly way of letting us know what to expect, he seemed to enjoy looking after us, his customers. This perhaps makes this restaurant a bit different from others where you may not get to speak to the chef unless you have a particular concern.

After re-boarding the tram our orders were taken for main course and it was served not long after. Bill had ordered the chicken and I, the rack of lamb. The presentation was good and both the chicken and the lamb were not only flavoursome but very tender. The vegetables were crisp and tasty.

We weren’t rushed with our meal and it gave us time to talk about things that maybe we wouldn’t have a chance at home. You know the things, how well our children are going in life, what our friends are up to, how work is and so on. And, yes, we did actually have some quiet time in order to see the lights of Bendigo. Sometime during the trip the music had stopped, but it didn’t seem to matter by now.

I thought what a good viewing spot the tram would be when the cathedral gets lit up.

It eventually came time for perhaps the most important decision of the night, what to choose for dessert! Once again Garry came out from his small kitchen area situated at one end of the tram to tell us what he was planning. I have to admit to not hearing the second choice because as soon as Chocolate mud cake with caramel was mentioned, I knew what I wanted (I think it was a pastry dish). As well there would be a cheese platter, tea or coffee and port or liquor to follow. Bill and I ordered the mud cake and were not disappointed.

The cake was a generous serve, topped with cream and a strawberry for decoration, and was divine. My only regret is that I was getting so full and loving cheese, I had to leave a little bit of room to try that…so didn’t finish the mud cake.

When we did leave the tram we were able to meet Bob, the driver, who was happy to discuss the details of how he had driven the tram.

We want to thank Garry and his staff and Bendigo trams for a lovely night out. The food was wonderful and very filling; the service very attentive without being intrusive and the unique atmosphere, once gotten used too, was enjoyable.

BELTING out fast paced, jumping around rock beats or cruising through melodic harmonies that you just can’t help but sing along to, Braddock don’t let up.

braddock Back in 2005, five self-claimed social misfits, tired of the overplayed emo music flooding the scene, decided that it was time they formed a band of their own.

- Steev Cowled That band was Braddock, and much like the Chuck Norris character which they named themselves after, they are certain to make an impact.

Their debut appearance on the Bendigo scene was on a small stage in front of a small crowd, nonetheless Braddock took the hearts and the votes of the crowd winning them a place on a BRIT compilation music CD. A three track demo recorded later at Melbourne SAE studios brought to the surface a harsh realisation; the BRIT recordings had done their sound a lack of justice, hence the members of Braddock turned down their position on the CD. Since then the band has gone through a series of member changes including the dropping of a third guitarist to become a more refined and solid sounding band.

“Our sound was a bit all over the place when we first started, as we were still getting our legs in the songwriting process and getting comfortable in each others style of playing. Now that the four of us have gelled together really well, our sound has really taken shape and we’d like to think it distinguishes us from other bands,” states singer, guitarist and co-founding member Andy McMillan.

The four-piece outfit, now consisting of Andy McMillan (vocals and guitar), Joel McLean (drums), Arther “Yaaf” Fuamatu (guitar and backing vocals) and Robbie Ward (bass) are influenced by everything from Pantera and NoFx through to Bob Marley and Sting. “I suppose that the most inspiration comes from each other, and the excitement that has been the driving force of the band to date.”

As well as regularly gracing the stages of pubs and clubs in the Bendigo area, Braddock have also rocked out to audiences at the The Brunswick Hotel and The Arthouse in Melbourne, just to mention a few. Supporting longtime Australian punk-rockers Frenzal Rhomb and BodyJar is also on the band’s list of accolades.

The band has now been delivering an unbelievably, catchy mixture of rock and punk (with the occasional pop riff thrown in for good measure) to an ever-growing fan base in Bendigo and Melbourne for

the past two and a half years “I think our fans get a lot from our music, with good beats and tempos to get you up and moving, to songs where you can sit back and soak up the music. Usually we like to start the show off with a few really energetic songs, to really get the crowd into it. We like having a really pumped up crowd who can get right into the gig. It’s a big boost on stage, when you can see that the crowd is completely into the songs.”

Braddock love what they do and you would have to be blind and deaf to not realise this - whether it be playing a set for an audience of twenty or two hundred - these guys score high on energy and emphasis. Belting out fast paced, jumping around rock beats or cruising through melodic harmonies that you just can’t help but sing along to, Braddock don’t let up under any circumstances.

“We always put in a big performance no matter where we are playing or how hung-over we are; that’s when it all comes together and everything happens. When you’re up on stage, there’s no better feeling than walking off knowing that you gave it everything you had.”

If this sounds like the sort of thing you are into but you either don’t get the chance to go see bands or are not one for the club scene: do not despair! The sound of Braddock will soon be available to take home. A debut EP is currently in the pre-production process and with a possible release date in June or July it’s not too far away.

“We are going into the studio almost as we speak to record a good portion of the tracks we have set aside for our debut EP, possibly full length. Keep an eye out for a few new tracks such as Wait, Take Me Under and some old ones like Walk Away and Bleeding.”

But until then it will be all about the live shows, for the fans and for the band. “That’s what we love doing. We’d love to maybe get signed at some stage and get our music right out there as much as possible, but as far as that goes you never know what’s going to happen, so we’ll just take it as it comes.” ■ 57

I suspect hotels, like boats, are female. Hospitable, nurturing, wicked and wild, surely they couldn’t be anything else.

Many performers attracted gigantic crowds outside the hotel as they waited for an appearance.

The Shamrock’s unmistakable five-story bulk sits tall and proud in the city centre, overshadowing most of Bendigo’s other splendid buildings.

The Shamrock was purchased by Alfred Joseph and Nat Sloman in the mid 1890’s and it was decided to build an even better Shamrock Hotel, to a scale and style befitting the splendid new architecture of the city.

Over the years, three versions of the Shamrock have stood on the site.

Since the first Shamrock Hotel (along with a concert hall) was built by Irishmen, Heffernan and Crowley, in 1855, hundreds of thousands of guests have passed through its doors. Diggers in mud-caked clothes, businessmen, world famous actors and singers, politicians, royalty, celebrities, the mega-rich and the dirt-poor, murderers and thieves, men of varied race and religion, they all came to the Shamrock. As well as entertainment, the Concert Hall was used for important and, often history-making, public meetings. For many years, the Shamrock was the beating heart of Bendigo. Legend has it that the floorboards were swept each night to gather up the gold dust that had fallen from hundreds of muddy boots.

The ‘first’ Shamrock’s impressive Concert Hall showcased the best of national and international performers and drew massive crowds.

Heffernan and Crowley are reported to have made a fortune in the first two years of the hotel. Only one year after opening, the Hall was enlarged and renovated to accommodate the growing crowds. When fire ripped through the Shamrock in 1857, Heffernan and Crowley used the opportunity to build a far grander version of the Shamrock, commissioning local architects, Vahland and Getzschmann, to design the new hotel.

The second version of the Shamrock opened in 1860, featuring the luxuries of the day as well as a new expanded concert hall and a bowling alley and smoking saloon in the basement. The new hotel also housed shops on the ground level and the Cobb and Co Sandhurst office. The rapid growth of Sandhurst in the 1860s led to unprecedented demand for accommodation at the Shamrock. A new wing, along Williamson Street, was added in 1865 to cater for the demand. The Hotel also housed the Bendigo mining exchange for a period in 1871, after fire destroyed the main Mining Exchange offices in the Beehive Building.

Heffernan built the Royal Princess Theatre in 1874 (demolished in the 1960s, alas!) and the new first-class theatre attracted world famous 58

Designed by Philip Kennedy, a protégé of Vahland, the latest reincarnation of the Shamrock Hotel had certainly more than matched the neighbouring buildings for flamboyance and stature and was an exuberant example of boom architecture. Opened in 1897, the one hundred room building was fitted out with both luxurious and modern conveniences including electric lighting, marble baths and lavish leadlight windows. It was at this version of the hotel that Dame Nellie Melba stayed (and was rumoured to request the post office clock be stopped to prevent it interrupting her sleep). It was also here that in 1898, Sir Alfred Deakin made his history-changing speech on Federation to the Australian Natives Association Conference.

Other notable guests over the years include: King George V (as Prince George), The Duke of Windsor (as the Prince of Wales), Princess Diana, Billy Hughes, Richard Strauss, Amy Castles, Sir Donald Bradman, opera singer Ilma de Murska and Lola Montez (who brought the infamous ‘spider dance’ to the goldfields).

By the 1960s, the Shamrock hotel had declined significantly and required massive funds for restoration. A fire broke out in 1969, compounding matters. The hotel was auctioned in 1974 and was passed in at $188,000. Fortunately, some local councillors had approached the State Government requesting it purchase the property based on its historical importance and this effort, combined with the recent listing of the hotel under the Historic Buildings Act, triggered the State Government to purchase the hotel for $213,000. In 1981 and approximately $2.3 million later, the newly renovated Shamrock Hotel was re-opened. Unapologetic, flamboyant and glamorous she stands irrepressible despite floods, fires and her many reincarnations.

scott pape His first book sold 6000 copies in a week. The Financial Review has called him the “Jamie Oliver of the business world” and Richard Branson said that “the Barefoot Investor makes finance fun”, but Bendigo boy Scott Pape still has his feet firmly on the ground.

A LaTrobe University graduate, Scott Pape is also a former investment advisor with one of Melbourne’s leading finance firms EL & C Baillieu.

He started out in media hosting his his own radio show titled ‘The Barefoot Investor’ on 90.7 Syn FM, a student radio station.

The Barefoot Investor – Five Steps to Financial Freedom has been rewritten and published internationally. Scott now writes a regular weekly column for the Newscorp Group, writes for Yahoo and works for Triple M who broadcast across the country, as well as finding time to work on his latest book.

Q. How did you come about being a writer?

A. I started a radio show called the Barefoot Investor, which was aimed squarely at people under the age of thirty. The show was a hit – and a publisher came and asked whether I would like to write a book based on the concept of the show.

The success of the book led me to start writing for the Herald Sun, and then later to achieve syndication through different News Corp papers. I now also write for Yahoo7.

Q. Many of us fancy ourselves as budding authors.

In reality, are there any career opportunities?

A. I count myself as being incredibly lucky to be paid well to write each week – it’s the best job in the world. From a financial standpoint, writing books is never going to make you a millionaire (unless you write the Da Vinci Code, or a ‘How to get rich in five minutes’ type of book). While The Barefoot Investor was a best seller here in Australia and has been re-written and sold throughout Europe – it’s not very lucrative. Writing a weekly column is what puts bread on the table.

Although to get a look in you will need to develop a strong niche audience for your writing (or be married to Shane Warne).

Q. How hard was it to get a publisher for your idea?

A. I was lucky to be approached by my publisher, while many of my friends struggle to get a book deal. While it may not sound sexy – the best way to get any book published is to have a solid understanding of who is going to buy your book, and importantly how you will reach them. Publishers are all about selling books. Artistic merit, in my experience comes second.

Q. What advice would you give for aspiring authors in the region?

A. Start writing. As in everyday. Put your writing on a website. Start sending it to various media agencies. If they tell you that they ‘don’t take submissions’ – send them twice as much.

Q. When you’re working on a project, what does an average day involve?

A. A column takes me the best part of a day to write – perhaps eight hours. Writing a book involves hard, daily slog. Now that I have started writing the sequel to Barefoot, it’s not uncommon for me to spend thirteen hours in front of the computer each day (sometimes more).

Q. How widely have your books been distributed?

A. One of the great things about being a published author is that I get emails from readers all over the world. I’ve had people buy the book in Sydney, Singapore, Dubai, London and the US. My publisher tells me that the next edition will be published in Russia (can’t wait for the launch party!)

Q. What’s your latest project?

A. A sequel to the Barefoot Investor – which is yet to be titled, focussing on helping young people secure their first property.

Q. Who are your inspirations? Are there any local authors you find inspiring?

A. Being a writer, I spend large amounts of time researching. Most of the business and investment related pieces that appear in the newspapers may as well be written in Japanese – they’re far too 61

terry jarvis “There is a story behind every painting,” says Terry Jarvis. “I was doing a picture of a shed in Barker’s Creek. It was a rustic, falling-down shed in the middle of a tranquil spring paddock and the finished landscape is warm and peaceful. It doesn’t tell the true story of the magpies that kept swooping my hat off because I was sitting under their nest.”

- Pam Harvey When Terry Jarvis laughs, it is warm and companionable and makes you smile. We stand in his beautiful, custom-built studio with the late afternoon light coming through the lines of windows and look at the spread of watercolours set out on an enormous white easel.

There is the Coliban River with whirls of rumbling water, and there is a tumbling Trentham Falls, and there is a deep stretch of Finnish water with little fishing boats peppering the edges. “I love painting water,” says Terry. “Man-made objects like buildings and streets have man-made shapes like lines, squares and triangles but water has God-given shapes. Unpredictable.”

The paintings on the easel are part of a collection headed for Jakobstad, Finland, in the middle of the year. Terry has exhibited there annually since 2002. This year’s OS journey also includes stops in London and Ireland to leave paintings in other galleries. As we look at Terry’s 2007 year planner that covers his trips away and his teaching commitments, I can see he’s going to be very busy – there’s hardly any spare time in the first half of the year. How does he get time to actually paint?

“Oh, I’ve got Mondays and Tuesdays off,” he says airily. And is he a night owl or a early morning riser? “Both,” he says, laughing again.

“I can start painting at about five thirty in the morning and I might be there at midnight.” Terry produces about 5 – 10 paintings a week.

THERE is challenge in every painting. There’s no point painting unless you try something different every time. It might be a perspective, an angle, a light.

Light is very important.

He speaks with quiet enthusiasm, his voice wondrous as we bend over the paper watching the watery blue fill the page. He talks as if it is the first time he’s ever told anyone about this amazing happening and it makes me – the student – feel privileged. I want to take that brush and use it even though I know that my drawing experience is limited to crudely shaped stick figures with large noses. I suddenly want to paint and I suddenly believe that I could.

Terry has taught a lot. He spent time with Eaglehawk Primary School in the year of their centenary and ended up with classes for the teachers as well as the students. He regularly teaches at Girton Grammar. He runs workshops at his home and in other places – the latest being at the N.S.W. Grafton Artsfest where his workshop ran side by side with workshops from other well-known artists such as: Robert Wade, David Taylor and Greg Allen. He has worked with Aboriginal groups in the Northern Territory and a Kosavar refugee groups in Tasmania.

Some time in the near future, he will have his own book and DVD to enhance his teaching.

Terry is generous in his style of teaching but his generosity extends in other ways. He gives away about fifty paintings each year.

The conversation becomes more serious. “A gift is a responsibility,” says Terry. “If God gives you a gift then you should use it in the wider

This is a man who loves his work – you can see it in his shining eyes.

And his work, he feels, is as much about teaching as actually painting.

“There is a constant pleasure in seeing the light in people’s eyes when they finally get it.” Terry pulls out a scrap of paper and places it over a painting that he is working on. He dips a brush in a jar of purple water and jiggles the wet end around on a scrap of dried paint in his palette. “People think painting is terrifying but I can show them that it isn’t. Look.” He wipes the brush a little and begins. “If you have your paper slanted, like mine is on the easel, then the brush strokes the paint down and a bead is formed…”

community. If I think I can help, then I will. Giving away a painting to a charity to help raise money for an individual or a group is something I can do. So I do it.”

But is there ever a painting he just can’t sell or give away? Something that is so important to him that it has to stay with him?

Terry only pauses for a moment. “No,” he says firmly.

And does he find producing so many paintings tiresome? Repetitive?

He immediately shakes his head. “There is challenge in every painting.

Terry turns back to his scrap of paper and quickly shapes it into an approaching storm over a discarded homestead. I can almost hear the thunder as he puts his brush down. “See?” he says. “Like that.

the tramways crawl.

I know no one will believe me but this story is about something that I never did – I just knew someone who once attempted the ‘Tramways Crawl’.

- Geoff Hocking Once upon a time you could ride the Bendigo trams from Billy Rodda’s Golden Square Hotel, along High Street to Pall Mall, all the way out to Tyson’s Reef Hotel, and then all the way back again to the fountain.

You could take another up Mitchell Street, over the railway line, out along Carpenter Street to the cemetery gates – and back again.

visited from his home in Adelaide. His cousin, an ex-footballer, ran the pub. Fred used the excuse for his prolonged stays that he was just visiting with the family.

‘The Crawl’ took careful planning, a milk-lined stomach, sturdy shoes and a disregard for personal safety. The idea was to take the tram and have a drink at every pub along the way. This required some fast footwork, and some pretty quick sculling around the fountain.

Before you leapt on board the tram heading up View Street you may have liked to take a glass of red at Waldron’s Wine Bar, a charming little establishment on the left with painted mirrors and leadlight windows still facing the street. You would have then had enough time to stroll up View Street and have a cleansing ale at the Rifle Brigade while the tram made the long pull up that steep incline—more than 10 tonnes of steel takes a fair bit of energy to get to the top—but once past the Rifle it was a quick sprint to The Five Lions on the next corner. In one door, scull, then out the other, as the tram turned into Barnard Street.

Let’s start at the centre of town.

‘Chugg-a-lugger, chug-a-lugger, chugg-a-lugger, chug-a-lugger’.

It would have been a good idea to begin with a heart-starter from the City Club Hotel, a beautiful old iron-laced pub which used to stand on the corner where Collins Booksellers have just opened their new store, just as the tram pulled away from the other side of the road outside Ezywalkin’s. On foot you could have probably beaten the tram to the City Family, gone through the corner door, downed seven ounces and dashed out the front, ready to meet it as it began the pull along High Street.

With any luck the pulley would have probably come away from the cable as it turned the corner, giving you a bit of time to get back on board for the exciting ride to the Borough. That’s nine beers and a glass of red.

You could travel all the way up View Street to the QEO, turn left along Barnard and settle back for the ride to the Borough. You could make this journey sober, or in the case of this tale – take a drop, or twentyfour, along the way.

Then it was a quiet ride all the way out to the ‘square’ with the first beer at the United Kingdom, the second at Rodda’s Golden Square Hotel at the terminus. You may have fitted in a couple at the ‘square’ while the tram waited to begin the return trip to the fountain, but probably not, as there was still a long way to go.

The trip back was easy, a quiet one at the National (a hotel where my maternal grandmother was once the licensee), and if my memory serves me correctly there was a passing loop near the National, so you could relax with your glass, listening carefully to the sound of the tram’s engines, when the ‘chugg-a-lugger, chug-a-lugger’ changed pitch it was time to dash. The next was the Golden Gate— I noted rather sadly the other day that the gate that has been mounted on the corner facing portico for donkey’s years is no longer golden, just beige, to fit the corporate color scheme of its new owner.

Time now to relax before a quick one at the View Point, now long gone. My uncle Fred liked to prop up the bar there whenever he

You need a moment or two for the sprint ahead. There aren’t many pubs along this long stretch, too many Cornishman. No wonder the first in the ‘bark’ was called The Hibernian, on the left to welcome you into Ironbark Gully, where the ‘Man’ came from, then it was uphill and down dale before you could nip into the Rose of Australia, scull, then out again. There was a loop around here somewhere, but we will remember that for the way back.

Next stop the White Horse in Californian Gully, and on to Eaglehawk.

There, on the left, The New Victoria, over the road The Camp Hotel. I am sure there are a couple of others in the ‘borough’ but their names are no longer in evidence on the buildings that still face the roadway.

The Court House is back away from the tramline, but the dedicated ‘crawler’ would have made the effort anyway.

A snifter at The Camp and away again, nothing to drink until the Manchester Arms. That loop comes in handy now. If you missed the tram here it was a long trot uphill to meet it again at the British and American, then downhill all the way back to the Park View Hotel opposite the QEO. With any luck that pulley would have probably come off again, it was a tricky corner that one.

Luckily there is not much ahead on the long run out to the cemetery.

By now you are probably feeling like stopping there anyway, for a long lie down, but there is still quite a way to go. Just the Terminus and the Hopetoun then back to the fountain. A little rest and recovery until the next tram takes off for the lake. Only six beers to go.

Down Pall Mall to the Black Swan on the left, when I was at the Tech this had a Gillies Pie Window on the corner, then in and out of The Albert, and nothing more until Tyson’s Reef — thank heavens.

Heading back again the first stop was the Lake View, a curiously named establishment with absolutely no view of the lake at all, the second the Court House, from which you can actually see the Court House, now also curiously named –the Sundance Saloon, then cruise along the Mall to finish at the grandest hotel of them all – the Shamrock. Oh! What a night!

Twenty-four beers and a glass of red.

It must have been something he ate, or was it motion sickness?

I am glad he wasn’t driving – whoever he was.

stopping the sweat It is often an embarrassment, a nuisance, sometimes a hindrance and can be costly with ruined clothing or excessive changing of garments. It is under arm sweating, or medically named Axillary Hyperhidrosis.

- Dr Tom Crawford This “phenomena” is more common than realised and affects both males and females, and can happen at any time of the year - right when that important presentation is due; in front of the class; meeting the boss. And you are not anxious or afraid, you are just doing your own thing… which just at that time is to sweat, something that is not wanted, making you self conscious, and sapping all your confidence.

effective and most cases are at least 86% reduced, which can really be more physiologically appropriate than total inhibition. This should not be confused with sympathectomy which involves the division of “sympathetic” nerves to the axilla in order to reduce the stimulus to sweat. Unfortunately after this procedure, there may be increased sweating of forearms or palms.

And that was just the good part! Sweat also can be costly - causing early degeneration of garments from its own action, or the bacteria, it attracts or frequent cleaning and therefore shortens the life of the garment. Then, that bacteria (some bacteria really like sweat) can produce the aroma which we call body odor. Most sweat is odorless and it is the bacterial action which causes the smell. Some people however, do have naturally odorous axillary secretions and even rarer, some have colored sweat.

This Liposuction technique is very suited for day treatment in a day procedure centre. It requires a knowledge of liposuction, local anaesthetic, and optional sedation. The regular type of anaesthetic infusion and hand operated liposuction apparatus enable the most precise removal of the appropriate tissue. There is sometimes bruising but this is limited. The risk to deeper structures is also minimal since this is a strictly shallow procedure. There may be some weeping from the puncture sites overnight, but little else.

Over recent years botulinim toxin (no trade names please, we’re Australian) has found a place in the minimisation of hyperhidrosis.

This however requires multiple injections in both arm pits, it stings, it is not permanent, and it may cost up to $2,400 per treatment when extensive or intensive cases are encountered.

It is always best to take that day and the next one off and also have a friend drive you home, but after that it is plain sailing. Satisfaction rates are reported as high with very few ever requiring even supplementary botulinium toxin.

There is another treatment, not as well known but has “been around for a while” and is well understood which is currently on the comeback trail. This is mainly due to finer and more specific types of instrument Liposuction technique of the axilla. This has been shown to be very

Depending on your skin type, excluding around the eyes and inside the ears, most parts of the body can be treated such as face, arms, underarms, bikini line, legs and back. During the treatment we can expect varying degrees of discomfort depending on the on the energy levels used, skin type and hair type. Most clients describe the treatment as mildly uncomfortable, such as a stinging, pinching or flicking sensation. The laser has an inbuilt cooling system in the handpiece, but for those who find the procedure uncomfortable a topical anesthetic is available.

Following treatment some clients may experience mild redness, feeling of heat or swelling but this usually resolves in a few hours. You can return to your normal activities immediately following treatment, but it is advised to avoid any unprotected sun exposure on the area for at least one week after the procedure, as the area will be more prone to sunburn and pigmentation change so don’t forget to cover up and pop some 30+ on the treated area.

For the best result, 3-7 treatments are usually required in order to catch the growth of the hair at their most vulnerable stage of growth as only a certain percentage of hair is amenable to treatment at each session.

for the lads – vintage inspired I have always been a sucker for a guy in a chunky knit. There’s something about the ‘snuggle factor’ during the colder months.

This outfit can go from day to night time play (minus the chunky jumper). A black roll-neck is very useful by itself or underneath other pieces in winter. Guys, try to pick jumpers that you not only feel comfortable in BUT that are stylish and that you love. Wool jumpers are not necessarily itchy, they can be soft and, in gorgeous hues – smart!

Pinstripe pants are versatile for work or weekend. Remember that to make them more casual, try funky sneakers. A colourful scarf can liven up an outfit – and I’m not talking your favourite footy scarf!

a fresh outlook Blokes seem to get a bit of a hard time about not caring too much about their looks.

Not caring isn’t always the reason though. Just like the fairer sex, guys get busy and often simply run out of time. When you are dealing with a short ‘do though, the time between cuts is often far more noticeable than when you have long, flowing locks.

Take Patty here for example. A busy life – study, work, sport, girlfriend…where’s the time to get something done?

We sent him off to Shed 7 to get the once over, and the proof is in the pictures – it doesn’t take much to get a guy looking great.

Mal at Shed 7 started with a straight shave (yep, that’s right fellas, someone can do that for you too!) He then set about taming the unruly locks. As Patty had a good haircut previously, it was easy to find the ‘original look’ and really just tidy up overall, however Mal did cut the hair a little shorter at the front for a fresh look.

He then used Redken For Men ‘Work Hard’ Power Paste, which is an amazing product that is sort of a mix between a wax and a gel. It has staying power, but is pliable enough that it doesn’t make your hair all hard like a gel does when it sets.

As Mal says, “What you really want is a low maintenance look.

Looking good should be easy.” And, it doesn’t hurt that you get to lie back in a comfy chair and watch your favourite sport on a big LCD screen while someone pampers you as well!

falling out of the tree So things are going great. You’ve decided that there’s no need to run two households. So the obvious solution is to move in together.

- Ash McAuliffe Sure, it makes sense on paper... One phone bill instead of two, no more getting up in a hurry for work only to realise that you’ve left your work shoes at her house. And my personal favorite... Only one set of dishes to wash. But is it worth giving up the freedom of ‘the man-house’?

First, let’s define the ‘man-house’. We’ve all been in one. They have a distinct smell, usually a combination of feet, old clothes and what can only be described as ‘boy smell’. The fridge contains a selection of left over take-away, a number of frozen meals, meat and beer. There may even be the odd vodka cruiser if there has recently been a party with mixed company. The mantle piece and walls are usually adorned with such treasures as model cars, posters of girls and that funny hat you bought in Bali two years ago and the ever-present Playstation/ XBOX/Nintendo.

Myself, my brother and Callum (of pink shirt fame) used to live in such a house. We have gone our separate ways and all now share a house with a special girl (in Callum’s case, it’s his sister so he doesn’t count) and how things have changed...

I actually heard myself (and I mean that.. It was some kind of out-ofbody experience) say “I think a nice Victorian Chaise would look good over there.” (Translation: chaise = an old couch with only one arm...

Usually with roses on it... Yuk) The last time I visited the afore mentioned house of debauchery that my brother and I used to live in, I noticed how things had changed.

His girlfriend has moved in and in some kind of superhuman effort, she has managed to organise him and the house...And...the smell has gone.

So what advice do I have for young players who are considering moving in with their lady?

1. Girl’s houses aren’t clean by magic.

Apparently they clean them regularly, and upon moving in together you will be included in this (sadistic) ritual. Best to go voluntarily, it’s just easier that way.

2. Your valued items will lose their status.

Apparently it doesn’t matter that it is a 1 of 500, 1/18th scale, limited edition of Marcus Ambrose’s championship winning Falcon... Now it’s just a toy.

3. You will find all kinds of new uses for the fridge.

Vegetables for example..Apparently you can buy them raw from a special section in the supermarket, not just in TV dinners!

4. Things will be moved.

You’ll put your toothbrush back on the coffee table or wherever is appropriate at the time, and tomorrow it will be gone! (I keep finding mine in the bathroom cupboard for some reason)

5. Your memory will fade.

Girls have this habit of asking us to do things when our minds are at their most distracted...Like when the V8’s or the footy is on. Naturally we will forget this seemingly unimportant task and sometimes the situation can get a bit...strained.

Moving in together is always a big step. For the ladies it’s all about the commitment and the relationship moving to the next level. For the guys, it is a somewhat bigger step... It’s like jumping down from the trees and putting underpants on in a giant evolutionary leap. We call it domestication. ■ 87

“I love going to Kidz City in Golden Square...it has so many toys for me to play with and explore...

Sure, you’ve heard the advice: Leave the dirty dishes, and don’t worry about the laundry — you’ll get to it eventually. But the reality is that most days you need this time to take care of the house, not to mention yourself!

Here, a few of our local mums share a few tips that worked for them when it came to sleep time!

“My husband and I took turns getting up to our son every other night for the first nine months. It wasn’t pleasant but was a decent survival tactic.”

Get in a routine. ”I love to go swimming with my friends every week. I started swimming lessons when I was 6 months old and I really enjoy kicking, splashing, singing songs and playing games. I have learnt so much already!”

“Go to bed when the baby does. This was hard for me because there’s so much that needs to be done, or I’d like to have that time to relax in peace and quiet. Even if it meant our bedtime was 8.30pm, I was then better prepared for 2am! So just do it”.

“We found our daughter slept much better when she learned to put herself to sleep rather than relying on us to put her to sleep by either feeding her or rocking her. Then when she woke during the night she didn’t need one of us to get up and put her back to sleep she could relax herself back to sleep”.

“We had a special small pillow that was a real comfort to him and made bedtime a lot easier. Even now (at two) he brings in his pillows when he is ready for bed. Some kids have a toy, a blankie or special music. Really anything that brings them comfort can be really helpful.

from the bride When it comes to the ‘big day’ we all know it takes alot of planning, but how rarely do we stop to think about how the day will really pan out. Will everything really run to plan? Will it be the day of our dreams?

- Jo Lythgo We followed recently married Angela Baines on her magical day, just to see if things really do go just the way you hoped and planned.

The ‘big day’ pretty much started the evening before; our bride-to-be, originally from Toowong, Queensland, had all her family that had flown or driven down over to the couple’s city hotel for a ‘rehearsal’ dinner. It was an evening for catching up on events, meeting and greeting the groom’s family and getting the party started.

Ange and her bridesmaids wrapped up the evening early (a girl needs her beauty sleep) and spent the night at the gorgeous Crystal Inn, enjoying a relaxing spa bath with some champas and snacks.

Now I swear – on my wedding day I at least got to sleep in till 8am, but not so for this excited bride, stirring at 6am. First things first – weather check – yep looks like it’s going to be a glorious day, and next - get me some food! Thankfully Bill (father of the bride) was onto it, returning from his fatherly duties with arms full of toasted sangas and croissants. Bride and bridesmaids tucked into the feast, showered and then off to the first stop, the hairdresser, at 9am.

As usual the hairdresser’s was a buzz of hairdryers, straightners and chatter; each girl had their own hairdresser and began getting styled as Ange supervised the process. Finally it was her turn, into the chair with a glass of champas, for a french roll style ‘up do’, that went perfectly to plan.

11.30am we were heading back to the Crystal Inn to continue

the transformation from drab to fab. No hired makeup artist here, it just so happened that Ange and bridesmaid, Julia, are both trained makeup artists taking alot of the running around out of the equation.

12noon and time for a spot of lunch, gotta keep the energy up for the big day ahead.

12.30pm and the fabness begins, now you would think that Ange would seriously want to relax, but no, into the bathroom to start the makeup. By 1.30 we were all fab and it was time to get into our dresses. Now at this stage everything seems like it’s going to plan, right? Well, we were all frocked up, hair was set and makeup pristine, but something seemed to be missing....Flowers!

2pm and finally the moment we’d all been waiting for, the dressing of the bride. The bridesmaids helped Ange slide on her enormous ‘princess style’ dress; a tiny semi strapless corset style top laced up the back and joined to a stunning organza skirt. The fact that the photographer was due any minute and the flowers still hadn’t arrived didn’t seem to this now ‘blushing bride’.

2.15pm the photographer arrives to grab some pre wedding snaps......still no flowers, and no word from the florist who was meant to be dropping them off. Mother of the bride starting to panic.

2.30pm

out to the courtyard for some group shots.....still no flowers. Right about now most brides would be tearing their hair out, but not Ange “I don’t even want to carry flowers anyway” was the comment swiftly followed by, “you’re not walking down the aisle without flowers” coming from Ange’s mum, Michelle. The next thing we know Michelle is tearing apart a lovely bouquet of red roses that Leigh, hubby-to-be, had sent earlier that morning, attempting to make some kind of bouquet for her daughter to carry down the aisle!!

2.45pm and we all ventured to the car park of the motel where our transport was waiting for some last minute family pics...still no flowers. With a drive to Axedale church ahead of us it was time to pile into the cars and get moving. Then literally just as we were about to pull out of the driveway, our MIA Florist appears bearing our bouquets of brightly coloured gerbera’s and we were off.

Apparently we were not like the traditional bride’s party running late we made it to the church right on time and it was all systems go.

3.05pm. The ceremony ran without a hitch, and almost exactly to script apart from the youngest of the flower girls, Riley, attempting to steal the show with her high fives for Ange and Leigh and the rest of the wedding party after the vows were said.

4pm I do’s were said, “I now pronounce you man and wife,” and finally “You may kiss the bride” and they were married. So far so good.

Now this is the part of the day that usually gets a little crazy, with the formalities of the ceremony finally out of the way it is time to relax before kicking off the reception that was due to commence at 6pm.

There was lots of laughter and chatter as the photographer snapped away.

5.45pm and time to head to the reception venue. The Sandbar’s beer garden – which had been transformed with the little help of a few marquees, big round tables, candles and fairy lights. About half way there and we receive a phone call from the MC – none of the guest have shown up yet!! It was close to 6pm (starting time), so what’s a bridal party to do?? Stop at a pub of course…the Farmers Arms, whom I’m sure were a bit stunned to see a bride and entourage wander in and head straight for the bar. Finally at about 6.30pm a call came in... the guests had finally arrived and we make a move, next stop, the party.

By 7pm Ange, Leigh and their bridal party were introduced and the party began.

The entire reception ran as smooth as silk, a beautiful seafood buffet overflowing with food and champagne flowing. Toasts and speeches made with a few tears here and there, the cutting of the cake, an awesome cinnamon donut stack scattered with coloured gerbera’s, and finally some dancing.

Ange and Leigh were the picture of happiness for the entire day, right up to the point where my husband and myself dropped them to the door of the wedding night location ‘Langley Hall’ in our Vito Van. When I ask Ange now what her fondest memories are of the day she says, the fact she never had a major ‘bridezilla moment’, that she had her nearest and dearest friends and family around her and how she still can’t believe she finally found the man of her dreams in good old Bendigo!!!

And did it all really go to plan???? I would definitely say so. ■ 95

As with any complex device things can go awry - through accidents or lifestyle choices - and jeopardise the integrity of your optimal health.

So what do you do when those back aches and pains can’t be ignored any longer; you keep getting splitting headaches or you simply want to attain and continue your very best health?

There are now many holistic options so have you considered chiropractic? The good news is that Bendigo is a hotbed of highlyskilled chiropractic practitioners!

Chiropractors work across the life span from ante-natal care and newborns through to our community’s senior citizens, and some even work with animals. They undergo a five to six year university degree to qualify and may specialise in a range of areas such as paediatric, neurological and sports care, to restore and, just as importantly, to maintain health…and they don’t ‘crack’ bones!

The Chiropractors Association of Australia (CAA), the peak body representing chiropractors within Australia, states on its website that, “Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that your body is a self-regulating, self-healing organism. These important functions are controlled by the brain, spinal cord, and all the nerves of the body. The skull protects the delicate tissues of the brain. The moving bones of the spine protect the vulnerable communication pathways of the spinal cord and nerve roots. If the nervous system is impaired, it can cause malfunction of the tissue and organs throughout the body.”

Put more simply by Dr Keith Livingstone, principal chiropractor at Alive Chiropractic, “Imagine your body as a two way radio. If your radio, which represents your body, isn’t tuned into your transmitter’s radio signal, which represents your brain and nervous system, you’re going to get distortion or fuzz coming from the speakers, which are your organs, glands, muscles and tissues. The return information is just as lousy! ” Chiropractic defines the cause of this “fuzz” or nerve interference as Vertebral Subluxation Complex: Vertebral, meaning the bones of the spine; Subluxation, meaning less than a total dislocation, and Complex, meaning consisting of more than one part.

Dr Livingstone, who has practised as a chiropractor for twenty years, shows me a practical example of nerve interference by pressing on my left arm and asking me to resist. I do this successfully until he presses a point in front of my right ear. My arm goes weak and drops by my side. Bizarrely there’s also a sore point in the roof of my mouth. He’s demonstrated that the global communication system isn’t functioning at 100% by provoking an already irritable joint line on the skull into a direction it “doesn’t like!”. The genesis of such problems may lie in poor posture, weak muscles or pelvic changes during pregnancy. These can make a difference to effective body performance.

I’m impressed when, just by getting me to stand, Dr Livingstone picks up on a number of my health concerns including lower back pain and digestive difficulties.

And so it’s the chiropractor’s role to tune the radio and transmitter, using Dr Livingstone’s analogy, to remove irritants to the nervous system and restore proper function. They do this primarily through spinal alignments that are performed “by applying no more pressure then you’d use to test the ripeness of a tomato”, according to the CAA website.

In Dr Livingstone’s practice an initial assessment consists of a comprehensive two part process.

done to assess spinal motion, muscle strength and nerve function.

X-rays are also often taken to see the spinal structures and weightbearing posture.

During the second visit the findings are discussed and a regime of care and supportive personal exercises recommended, along with the first adjustment. Clients are given a written copy of their findings and recommendations.

Dr Livingstone says that although chiropractors assist a range of different health problems they don’t ‘cure’ anything. “Most often people will come in with something quite specific such as sciatica but because of the complexity of the body system it might be caused by an irritation in another part of the body. What chiropractic care does is help the body to heal itself in a specific yet powerful way and restore global health.”

He cites an example of a teenager who had suffered for years with chronic headaches and minor bladder problems. Her posture appeared outwardly totally normal, but an X-Ray revealed an abnormal low-spine curvature. Within weeks of beginning care she was enjoying a new level of health previously unknown.

Chiropractic is a relatively new healing modality founded in 1895.

Now practised throughout the world, it has endured attacks from conventional medicine. Fortunately this is now changing with many GPs referring their patients to chiropractors, or experiencing care themselves.

Consultation times will vary according to the stage of correction a client reaches. The long initial consultation, which entails thorough examination and history, costs $55. X-rays are extra. Many private health care funds offer rebates on chiropractic care.

Muscular fitness Muscular fitness can be defined as strengthening and endurance exercises. Using a resistance Eg: Body weight, exercise machines and free-weights (dumbbells & barbells), to overload the muscles. Three sessions per week is recommended with exercises involving all major muscle groups being performed in sets and repetitions.

Flexibility Warm up Warming up should be the first component of any fitness program.

Regular stretching is essential for increasing flexibility and should be performed after each exercise program. Stretching also encourages the body to return to its pre-exercise state. how to prepare your garden for winter As the weather gets cooler we head indoors for warmth and protection from the elements. But our gardens and lawn don’t have the same luxury!

June is the perfect time to prepare your garden for the winter months, and Bunnings Warehouse has provided a range of tips to ensure your garden is filled with cheerful colour during the cold winter months.

Winter doesn’t have to mean no colour in the garden!

Gorgeous flowers such as pansies, marigolds and gladioli can brighten a gray day.

Assess what you’ve got Your planting philosophy should always be guided by your climatic conditions. By using plants that can cope with local conditions, your garden will look good in every season of the year. Be aware of the specific needs of plants in your garden, to enable you to prepare them for the rigours of winter. In cold climates, move frost-tender pot plants close to the house or under the eaves for protection. In very cold areas, you may need to move sensitive plants indoors. Now’s the time to take a look at what didn’t work in your garden last season and rearrange!

What to plant June is a great time to plant edibles – winter vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli, lettuce and spinach, as well as herbs including oregano, rosemary and thyme. Bulbs and potted colour can also be planted to brighten up the grey weather - try pansies, violas, primulars, marigolds and gladioli. Be sure to use a good potting mix and a soluble fertiliser.

What to prune Prune your Hibiscus, geranium and poinsettias, as well as your summer fruit trees such as apple trees and lemon trees. In a very cold climate, roses and hydrangeas should not be pruned until the end of winter, to avoid frost damage.

Mulch Mulching for winter protects plants from drastic temperature changes in the soil, insulating them against extreme cold, and also prevents soil erosion. Don’t mulch too early, though, as it may encourage disease and pests. In summer we mulch to keep the weeds out and the moisture in. In winter, mulch acts as a really good protective insulation blanket for plants. The leaves which fall in your garden in autumn are an ideal mulch to spread around the garden before winter.

Be Water Wise In most areas, winter means less demand for water, so re-set automatic timers to reduce 3:17 the frequency of irrigation.

It’s worth noting that BWPR0534 1/18/07 PM Page 1 while it may be colder, many parts of Australia receive minimal rain in

winter, so it’s essential that the little rain that does fall, or any water you supply, is channeled where plants need it the most – at the roots.

Wetting agents can be used in both gardens and pots, and ensure that the water penetrates the soil, instead of running off. This promotes deeper roots, resulting in more drought-tolerant plants. Check water restrictions in your local area.

What to watch for Pests such as scale, aphids, snail and slug, and diseases such as petal blight. Get rid of weeds. They shade grass and plants, take nutrients, and, let’s face it, they look ugly!

Give your tools a little love Clean, oil, and sharpen your tools, then store them in a dry place for the winter. Drain garden hoses and store them coiled in a sheltered place where they won’t freeze and crack.

The winter months can be cruel to your garden, but with careful preparation and maintenance, you will reap the benefits in September!

how to buy and sell When you are looking to purchase property, there are two main ways real estate can be bought and sold – private sale and public auction.

Private Sale. In a private sale the property is advertised and offers are invited from prospective buyers. The sale is negotiated between the buyer and seller, usually with the assistance of an agent.

If you are buying a home via public auction, you first need to determine what the property is most likely to be valued at and therefore sell for.

Often, the sale price will be quite different to what is anticipated, and this needs to always be taken into account. Often, you can get an idea from what other homes have recently sold for in the area, or from a real estate agent’s listings of recent sales. Before you bid, you need to ensure you are clear on all details and have thoroughly looked over the property – just as you would if you were purchasing directly – as once you bid, you are obliged to purchase the property. You will also need to have your loan approval in writing prior to the day of the auction. Being prepared is the number one message when looking to buy in this manner.

Public Auction. An auction is a public sale, usually conducted by an estate agent acting as an auctioneer. It is advertised for a specific place, time and date. Prospective buyers bid and the property is sold to the highest bidder, provided the seller accepts the bid.

When you are buying privately, you can either buy through an agent, or directly from the seller. In either instance, you can make an offer, however the owner can sell to someone else until contracts are exchanged. Unlike auctions, you have lots of room for negotiation with private sale.

Private Sale.

In both instances, it is important to look in to the property, and also remain a little emotionally detatched from it. This will help you negotiate logically if you are buying a private sale, and it will also ensure that you don’t go over budget when buying at public auction.

In both instances it can also help minimise disappointment if you are not a successful buyer.

So let’s look at the main differences between private sale and public auction:

Private Sale.

The seller and buyer agree on a sale price through

negotiation.

Auction. Price is determined by competitive bidding and the property is sold to the highest bidder acceptable to the seller.

The contract can be conditional, that is the buyer can make the sale subject to the availability of finance, a satisfactory condition report or other conditions with the seller’s approval.

Auction. The contract is unconditional. That is the buyer cannot make it subject to finance, inspection and the like.

Private Sale.

For residential properties the buyer has a cooling-off period of three business days, with no exceptions.

Auction.

There is no cooling-off period. ■

an ideal space Let’s face it, building a new home is an expensive process…and often, it is the landscaping that takes a back seat in the budget allocation.

This can leave your beautiful new home surrounded by what can only be described as a dust bowl. There are plenty of downsides to this, beyond the aesthetics. Anyone who has had to deal with the situation knows that at the slightest sign of a breeze, the house is dirty a mess, the windows get grubby and you start to feel the depression that comes with looking out at a cracked, muddy, weedy landscape each day!

The drought has increased the problem – what is the point in planting what we can’t water? Landscaper, Simon Rosa, faced this problem with an additional challenge: take a sloping, empty block and turn it into an attractive, useable space.

The client wanted to keep the bush view that they did have, and compliment it with any planting that was done. This would also ensure that watering wasn’t as much of an issue. They wanted some privacy to the east of the block, but still wanted to be able to view the treetops. They also wanted to ensure that the design fitted well with the existing streetscape, and that it was low maintenance in looking after and waterwise.

Simon used a combination of timber retaining walls and steps with rocks to create contrast and different rooms within the space. Paving, all-weather; hardy grasses and mulch were used for the flat areas.

This was a huge challenge given the area was on such a great slope to begin with. Many landscape gardeners would view this as a huge problem, but Simon viewed it as an opportunity to create different levels and give the impression of a far larger space, offering attractive views from all levels.

For the ground cover, he incorporated a mix of drought tolerant grasses and trees, and these were softened with some coloured flaxes and grasses, seaside daisies and agapanthus. The design also included a galvanised metal screen. This served as a feature, as well as giving that much needed privacy, and also helped to retain the feeling of space. Large metal pots to match the screen were added to create a modern feel.

Yukkas and grasses with a pebble base were placed along the retaining walls as an attractive feature and finish to the overall look, and olive trees espeliad along the brick fence was used to create an appealing screen.

All planting was heavily mulched giving the plants a great start and helping to conserve water. The garden also utilised grey water and tank water systems ensuring that water would never be an issue.

It never ceases to amaze me how some people present themselves for interviews.

You are selling an important product and that is you. You only get one chance, it is so competitive out there that you must make an impact on that prospective employer. I like to base interview techniques on the 3 Ps -Preparation, Preparation & Preparation!

Find out all you can about the industry, the organisation and the job role in order to convince the employer that you want the job, you can do it and that you fit within the organisation’s culture.

Prepare some well thought out questions to ask that show your initiative in researching the organisation and industry, and to further demonstrate your interest in the role.

Anticipate questions, write down a dozen questions you might be asked during the interview and plan those answers accordingly. This is part of preparation! If you’re not sure about how you answer a question, pause, rather than blurting out the first thing in your head.

You only have one chance to impress – so consider first impressions.

Your body language and your breath! As an ex-smoker, I know!

Chew a mint, but not during the interview, get rid of gum before the interview. If you don’t get a chance to, don’t blow a bubble, no matter how relaxed the interviewer is making you - yes, I’ve seen that too! Remember, the interviewer is looking for someone to represent their business.

Turn off your mobile phone before you go into an interview. No one likes to be interrupted especially the interviewer. I once had an applicant ask to borrow my pen so he could write down his friend’s phone number! Arrive on time, about 10 minutes before. If you’re running late don’t panic, ring the interviewer and explain your situation, rather than turning up late and giving an excuse.

Plan what you’re going to wear. Dress appropriately and, in general, conservatively. Everything about your appearance should reflect your professionalism and attention to detail. Shorts and thongs are okay for a bbq, not for an interview; I’ve seen that one too!

On average I look at up to 500 resumes per month for a variety of jobs, and it never ceases to amaze me how little effort some people put into their resume. A resume should be easy to read and present the important facts about you clearly and concisely. Employers remember about 60% of the first page, 40% of the second and not much after that. On Google alone there are over 85 million sites about resume preparation of some sort so use that information. When submitting your resume, ask yourself; Does this document reflect all of my skills?

Would I hire me on what I have just read?

Make sure your referee’s know that they’re on your resume. I have experienced more than once previous employers listed as referees, only to tell me in no uncertain terms their thoughts on the applicants, and sometimes it wasn’t always favorable to say the least.

Application letters are also vital to sell yourself to that prospective employer, it should summarise your ability and your work history and outline an interest in the position in probably no more than two to three paragraphs. It is a brief overview of who you are and why you want this job. I personally prefer resumes if they are accompanied with an application letter regardless of the position, to me it shows that the applicant has made a concerted effort and is serious about getting that job.

So, with time spent preparing for the interview and consideration about the contents of your resume, you should feel confident to approach that next job knowing you are equipped with the right tools to sell yourself. ■ 116

Living in the 21st century offers us so many opportunities and choices.

There seems to be limitless possibilities. However the down side to living in our times is that it can also be overwhelming, confusing and exhausting.

Everyone is capable of making changes and achieving their goals, however there is more chance of success when you commit and follow a few simple steps.

• Be clear and specific about what you really want. Each day visualise yourself having achieved your goal ie. begin with the end in mind. Write your goal down as if you have already achieved it. Put this somewhere obvious like on the fridge. Say your goal at least every time you see it.

Talk and think as if you have already reached your goal.

• Have a plan. Break your goal down to smaller achievable steps and make sure they’re realistic. Set yourself up for success not failure!

• Take action. Do something every day to work towards your goal, be prepared to challenge yourself. Remember “if you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you have always got”.

• Keep checking that what you are doing is working. If not, do something different. Repeat your successful actions. Often the simple steps repeated daily have the greatest results.

• Prioritise yourself. Schedule time into your day to complete what ever you need to. Ensure you don’t end up at the bottom of your list at the end of the day.

• Focus, focus, focus!!! Keep focusing on what you want. Put yourself first and treat yourself like you would treat your best friend. This is not selfishness, when you are happy and fulfilled everyone around you benefits.

• Believe in yourself. Watch out for negative self talk that may sabotage you ie: “I can’t”, or “this is too hard” and change it to positive, like “I did a great job” or “I can do this again.”

• Focus on what you are doing or achieving and not how far you still have to go. Each night think back to what you have done that is helping you get closer to your goal.

• Know your strengths and how to use them. Make a list of what they are and how or when you will use them.

• Get support, ask for help or find someone else who has succeeded and model or copy their actions and behaviours.

• Recognise your patterns. How you naturally react or behave in certain situations. These may have a positive or negative impact on your life.

• Share your successes with the people you love. Be proud of yourself.

These steps can be applied to any area of your life. If you have tried to do something many times before and have been unable to, this just means you need to try a different approach. Follow these steps and maintain a belief that you can do it. People often fail many times before succeeding. Failure is just learning. Take something useful from it and move on!

Are you working for it or is it working for you?

Today debt is a way of life with the average Australian household spending 2.3 per cent more than it earns each week, according to the AMP.NATSEM Income and Wealth Report+.

But debt doesn’t have to be a dirty word. If it’s the right kind of debt, it can actually help people.

It’s a simple concept: ‘good’ debt can create wealth and ‘bad’ debt reduces it. If people borrow to invest, and the investment earns money, they can pay the loan off from the earnings. In this way the debt is actually working for them. That’s ‘good” debt. On the other hand, if people borrow for a car, boat or if they use a credit card to buy things that lose value and don’t earn money, they’re behind in two ways – the lower capital value and all the interest they’ve paid.

This is ‘bad’ debt.

Healthy debt management is often the first step in ensuring financial fitness. People should consider paying out any non-deductible debt first, such as credit cards, personal loans and home mortgages, as its after-tax cost is usually highest. Any debt should be paid off in order of interest rate, highest to lowest.

If someone is lucky enough to receive a lump sum of money, while it may be tempting to splurge, they will usually be better off in the long run if they use this money to pay off any non-deductible debt first.

Before people start building assets, it’s important to check what they owe – how much, in what form and at what interest rate. Then they can see whether they can arrange their debt more efficiently.

People with several bank accounts and credit cards should consider consolidating them, helping to reduce fees and charges, not to mention being easier to keep track of spending.

People could also think about rolling all their non-deductible debt into their home loan as this is usually the lower interest rate. At the same time, people should look at increasing their home loan repayments so they don’t end up taking longer to pay off the debt. Arranging for income to be paid directly into a home loan and using a credit card for daily purchases can help people make considerable savings on interest payments. Of course, this will only work properly if people pay off their credit card debt each month.

Borrowing money to invest, known as “gearing”, can be a powerful way to build wealth, but beware – gearing has more risk attached to it than investing with money that has been especially put aside.

Borrowing provides a larger sum to invest and earn returns, so in good market conditions earnings can be multiplied. While investing more money can provide the opportunity to increase potential gains when markets are rising, gearing can also increase the impact of losses in falling markets. People should always get advice before they start borrowing to invest to make sure it is the right strategy for them.

A financial planner can work with people to help them make sure all of their debt is working for them, not against them. It’s always important for people to seek advice on their own personal circumstances from a professional financial planner before making any investment decisions.

As the Victorian property market continues to expand, apartments and flats are becoming increasingly popular with property owners and renters alike.

Traditionally managed by bodies corporate, this densely populated domain is about to be streamlined by new legislation affecting regulation and other related matters. Among the changes, bodies corporate are to be replaced by owners corporations (OC).

The introduction of the Owners Corporation Act 2006 (Vic) (the Act) represents much more than just a name change. The new Act, which will come into operation in late 2007, builds on and enhances regulations under the Subdivision Act 1988 and will affect one in five Victorians who own, live in, manage or develop bodies corporate.

The new regime aims to clarify roles and responsibilities of owner’s corporations, committees of management, managers, lot owners and occupiers.

- OCs must establish an internal dispute resolution process. An OC must follow the process as set out in the rules before the dispute can go further;

The Act also aims to improve access to dispute resolution processes, give sufficient powers and flexibility to OCs to operate effectively, improve financial management, enhance regulation in relation to information disclosure and promote professional standards throughout the industry. The changes will be welcomed in an area that has arguably been poorly regulated to date.

The introduction of this legislation represents good news for owners as well as occupiers, who will now enjoy better access to dispute resolution processes. Under the new system, disputes cannot be taken to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) unless rules and complaints procedures outlined in the legislation have first been exhausted.

The existing framework provides no alternative for dispute resolution outside applying for a formal order from the Magistrates’ Court or

- Disputes cannot be taken to VCAT unless earlier dispute resolution processes have been exhausted.

A significant problem currently experienced by people buying property managed by a body corporate has been the difficulty in accessing information such as financial statements, maintenance plans, committee minutes and body corporate rules. Under the Act, OCs must keep all records of activities, undertakings and owners corporation certificates as well as information about proposed fees, repairs and liabilities to be included in a Vendor’s statement at sale.

This process will ensure potential purchasers can make informed decisions about the property.

There are forms and regulations still to be settled before the Act comes into operation on 31 December 2007. london London has established itself as one of the top five tourist destinations in the world and for many Aussies it has become a home away from home.

- Jaime Cail After living there for some time, it now feels like a second home and I always love heading back there to take in new sights or reacquaint myself with my old favourites like Piccadilly Circus, Harrods, Camden Market, Covent Garden and, my old stomping ground, Fulham.

It’s amazing how much a place can change, but nothing seems to change as quickly as in London.

London has so much to offer every tourist from markets such as the famous Portobello Road Market in Notting Hill, Camden Market, theatre in the West End, famous restaurants, live concerts, shopping and more shopping. There is nothing better than taking a stroll around some of the better known sights made famous by none other than the Monopoly Board Game, or even popping past to see if the Queen is at home in Buckingham Palace. There is even celebrity spotting if you’re into that, but you have to keep your eyes open as they try to go incognito. I once saw Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice) in the local Marks and Spencer supermarket.

Londoners love a good time and they live for their pubs - there’s practically one on every corner. The British have perfected not only franchised bars like the Slug’n’Lettuce, All Bar One and Wetherspoon’s but also themed bars for the antipodean contingent, pubs such as The Redback Tavern, The Walkabout, Bondi Bar and Springbok Sports Bar. Summer is by far the best time (and busiest) to visit this vibrant city where the dark clouds seem to disappear taking with it everyone’s depressed attitudes. On every street corner you see lads outside their local pub having a good time and people flocking to parks such as Hyde Park, Regents Park, Kew Gardens or Richmond Gardens to soak up the rays and enjoy what London has to offer.

If castles are more your thing, make sure you check out Buckingham Palace which is open to the public between August – October, otherwise check out the changing of the guard each day. Princess Diana’s former home at Kensington Palace or another well known palace within London is Hampton Court Palace which has stunning gardens and a maze which are also open to the public. Otherwise outside of London there is the other Royal residence, Windsor Castle or Leeds Castle.

Why not take a river cruise from Westminster Pier down the river to Greenwich where you’ll pass the site of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, get off at the Tower of London before jumping back on to take in the new financial area of Canary Wharf before arriving at the little village of Greenwich where you can see the spot that divides the world into eastern and western hemispheres.

London is home to a large number of amazing museums and galleries which are all well worth a look especially Tate Modern, Museum of London and the British Museum.

For a birds eye view of this amazing city jump aboard the London Eye a 450 foot ferris wheel that takes in the magnificent landmarks and city views. The entire ride takes about 30 minutes.

For another interesting take on London there are a number of tourist operated ‘City Walks’ which can be organised through tourist information offices. I was tempted to try out the ‘Jack the Ripper’ walking tour which was quite interesting but somewhat disappointing as a lot of the sights have now been demolished and turned into apartment blocks but none the less you still get a great insight as to what took place in the time of the Ripper.

London is a shopper’s paradise, pretty much everything you could imagine is in the capital from the high end shopping in Knightsbridge to the middle range of Oxford Street to the often eccentric Covent Garden area. If markets are more your thing, be sure to check out Portobello Road market, Camden Market (trendy clothes), Spitalfields Market, Brick lane and Greenwich market that has a bit of everything.

Getting around London is made easy and relatively cheap with the Underground or ‘The Tube’ as it is more affectionately known. The cheapest and easiest option for travel is to buy a One Day Travel card or Weekend Travel card depending on the duration of your stay. The travel card also allows you onto buses which take you all over the city and past many tourist stops along the way.

London is one of my favourite cities and it’s a place where there is so much to do that I don’t think you ever really have enough time to see everything – there is so much changing before your eyes. London is not a cheap city but well worth spending a couple of days in to really immerse yourself in all it has to offer, you wont be disappointed.

joel frost memorial pool competition In what is now it’s sixth year, the annual ‘Joel Frost Memorial Pool Competition’, was held on April 22 at the New Market Hotel.

Founded by Robin Carroll, the tournament attracted 38 entrants to vie for the trophy as well as many spectators.

Many games came down to the wire and the day was full of action and entertainment with everyone holding the memory of Joel and the fun spirited motto of the competition, ‘Great Bloke, Lousy Pool Player’, in the forefront of their minds. ■

bend it in bendigo In the UK, throughout Europe, South America and other places around the world it is an institution. They call it football and the die-hard fans are seen throughout the year (especially at World Cup time) looking about as crazy as a sports fanatic can be.

Here in Bendigo though, we call it soccer…although I think the true fans are almost just as crazy! There have been ball games as long as there have been people to play them, and really early “football” type games are found in almost every culture on the planet. However, it was in England that soccer really took shape. In the 1860’s, association football (as it is known over there), separated from rugby and implemented the ‘no handling’ rule. It didn’t take long to take off, and before the end of the century most countries, including Australia, had their own teams. However Australia already had a raging debate as to what was constituted as ‘football’ (it was rugby in the North and Aussie Rules in the South), and so it seemed soccer was never going to be considered football in this country at least.

The popularity of the sport though has always been strong, and with more and more immigrants arriving on our shores (and bringing with them an added finesse to the sport), it continues to grow. In Bendigo, there are 12 clubs in the local league, as well as state club, The Bendigo Vipers.

Doug Colclough is the General Manager of the Bendigo Amateur Soccer League (BASL). The BASL is the peak regional sporting organisation responsible for management, administration, marketing, promotion and development of soccer in Central Victoria. BASL organises and manages competitions for approximately 2500 players from sub-junior to adult. Clubs affiliated with the BASL enter teams in local competitions. Doug has a passion for soccer, and is keen to see the sport continue to grow in the region.

Q. Can you explain the basic rules of soccer?

A. Each team consists of 11 players per side trying to score a goal against the other team. They play on a rectangular pitch with goal posts at each end. The side with the most goals after a given time is deemed the winner. Players can control the ball with any part of their body, except their hands and arms. The exception to this rule is that the goalkeeper, who may handle the ball within a ‘penalty area’ in front of the net he is guarding.

Q. How long does a game go for?

A. Up to but not exceeding 90 minutes

Q. What age do most people begin playing soccer?

A. Five and six year olds can play with competitions starting at Under Sevens, but really any age is acceptable if you have the right fitness level.

Q. Is it just for blokes?

A. Not at all! In fact, many of our best players are women. There are both women’s and men’s teams in all leagues.

Q. Why do you think it is such a popular sport in the region?

A. It is a world wide game and the latest popularity of the Socceroos and Melbourne Victory have only added to it. Children have heros – Viduka, Culina, Cahill and other such popular players. Bendigo also participates in the Country Championships which is a huge draw card.

Q. What time of the year is it played?

A. Mainly through the Winter Season but the new ‘A’ league is playing in the Summer and this is also attracting large crowds.

Q. Are there many clubs in Bendigo and how can you become involved?

A. There are numerous clubs throughout Bendigo and central Victoria.

Q. Are there any locals who have made it big?

A. There are several players playing in the A league, with some of the younger players making it to the Australian team like the talented female player, Stef Cola.

Bryan Coghlan is part owner of Major League Indoor Sports, Bendigo’s biggest indoor soccer and netball arena. Playing indoor soccer gives you the opportunity to play all year round and any time of the day… and for those who may not quite have the skill level of competitive soccer or perhaps are looking to learn, it is a great alternative.

Q. How is indoor soccer different to outdoor?

A. It is played in a smaller area with nets surrounding the court. There are only five players per side and, of course, it’s indoors!

Q. Who can play indoor soccer?

A. The great thing about indoor soccer is that nearly anyone can play it from ages five to 65! If you have a love of the sport, you can be involved regardless of age or fitness level.

Q. What competitions do you have?

A. We have a boys, girls, ladies and mens competition all graded to suit their skill level. We also have the popular Mixed 5 - a soccer side that features three guys and two girls.

Q. Is it pretty serious? Or more social?

A. Teams have the choice of playing the game anyway they want to, but l would say that most teams or about 75% of them would treat it as a social event.

Q. How can people get started if they are keen to play indoor soccer?

plinkers and top shots “Turn right at the main intersection at Marong,” said Karel Zegers, Junior Vice President of the Victorian Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (SSAA), over the phone. “Follow the road one and a half kilometres and turn right into the range. It’s marked by a red flag.”

- Pam Harvey So I turned at the huge red flag and drove up the dirt road at the 20 kilometre per hour speed limit. For a little while there was only the stillness of the bush on a hot day and then I caught a glimpse of some buildings. But it was the signs that really told me: Warning.

Shooting Ahead. I pulled my dusty family sedan up next to a dusty four wheel drive and got out. Shooters are to register at the office BEFORE removing guns from vehicles, said another sign. The message was very clear: Rules are to be Obeyed.

Karel was sitting in the official shed waiting for me. His enthusiasm for his sport was immediate. “I’ll show you around,” he said, leaping to his feet. “We’ll just wait for this round to finish.”

In front of us, rifle shooters sat in stalls, their guns mainly mounted on benches, shooting at impossibly small targets 50 to 100metres away. The range itself was a series of dirt bunds – walls of firm soil that rippled like waves to the end of the area. At the back of the two main sections were towering mountains of dirt almost as high as the eucalypts behin them. The long range section – two hundred metres long – seemed surrounded by high walls of clay.

“This range,” said Karel, “is very old, probably from the late 1800’s. It was a Commonwealth site that trained soldiers for World Wars I and II and was originally one thousand yards long.” Really? I didn’t even know it existed until a week ago.

The siren bleeped three times. A Range Officer, wearing a fluorescent vest, called out for shooters to stop. Patiently, shooters waited until the all-clear was given and then they wandered off along the side of the bunds to retrieve their targets.

There are three main types of shooting: rifles, shotguns and pistols.

Each type has specialities – we were watching shooters with .22 rifles that went off with a small cough. Every now and then something cracked loudly – the end stall had a shooter with a .303 rifle. Each shooter wore the earmuffs that are mandatory once on the long stretch of concrete that housed the stalls.

“You see those adjustable baffles?” said Karel, pointing at the sloping

roof over each stall. “Rifles can be shot in four positions and the baffles are always situated so the shooter can only see the range and not the sky or the horizon. This keeps the bullets inside the range area and therefore safe.”

The shooters were mainly doing benchrest shooting that day so the baffles were lowered to about half way. Rifle shooting is done in four basic positions – prone, sitting, kneeling and standing. Each position requires its own set of skills but the rules of all shooting are basically the same: unless on target, never point your gun anywhere but the ground or the sky and always treat it as loaded.

So how safe is the sport? Karel confers with his colleagues and they agree that the only accident they’ve ever heard of on a controlled range in over forty years of collective experience was a man whose bolt flew off his gun when it fired and grazed his cheek.

Bendigo and district has a range of gun clubs for rifle, pistol, big bore and clay target shooting. Under supervision from a licensed shooter at a range, you can have one introductory shoot without a license. If you want to continue in this sport, then a series of steps is required– including a theoretical component – in order to gain a license.

Shooting sports are strictly supervised by officials and members of the SSAA. Bendigo is an accredited training facility for people wanting to become SSAA officials.

Recently, Bendigo SSAA shooters have joined forces with the state government in the Conservation Wildlife Management Program that helps with pest control in our local forests. In Mildura alone, the program has meant the removal of 1000 feral goats. “You would not believe the amount of goats, pigs and foxes that are feral in Victoria’s bush,” said Karel. Having seen wild pigs in the high country and lots of foxes around Bendigo (but no goats), I probably would.

honda cr-v I must admit that I had pre-conceived ideas about the Honda CR-V as a bit of a Mum’s taxi. That’s mainly because the only people I know that have them have at least two children under ten years of age. Test driving the new CR-V however, was enlightening to say the least.

For something new and so you will have the male and female perspective on the important features of the CR-V, Lisa and I have done this test-drive together.

He Says: The first thing I noticed was that the styling was definitely less ‘Mumsy’ than the previous models. It’s got a funky new look to it and a few features that will appeal to a younger market than the traditional CRV buyer, but it’s still a very practical vehicle for the family.

With a 2.4L V-Tec engine and a silky smooth 5 Speed auto, the CR-V accelerates easily in an overtaking situation and has no trouble getting up hills. Going over Big Hill for example, we had the cruise control set to 100km/h and the CR-V was able to maintain the set speed all the way over and all the way back again.

Around town there was very little road or wind noise even with the electric glass sunroof open. All of the important controls such as cruise control and stereo buttons, are conveniently situated on the steering wheel and the dash displays as much information as you could possibly want while driving, even your current fuel consumption.

The in-dash 6 disc CD player conveniently plays MP3’s as well so by the time you fill 6 CD’s with MP3’s you’ll have about 400 songs, you’ll be set for 20 hours of music. As efficient as the CR-V is, you’ll have to fill up the fuel tank four times before you have to fill up the CD player again! Just in case you’re on the mother-of-all-road-trips there is a huge compartment between the two front seats that has a power socket and an auxiliary plug for your MP3 player. Also, my first estimate of this immensely useful compartment is that four cans will fit easily.

Honda has significantly upgraded the All Wheel Drive system in this model. How it works is that most of the time, the vehicle is running in Front Wheel Drive, until the wheels start to slip, say on ice or mud.

When this happens, All Wheel Drive is engaged automatically so you can continue on your merry way. A criticism of the old CR-V was that this process took too long and by the time All Wheel Drive was engaged, you had either slipped past the ice or were bogged in the mud.

It’s also worth mentioning that the CR-V has the turning circle of a one legged duck! I was able to do a U-Turn in Forest St. without making it a 3 Point Turn.

She Says: With big mirrors and a higher seating position there was a lot of visibility while driving which is always good. The car we drove (Sports model) had a nice two-tone tan and black interior. In the dash, just above the glove box there is a little storage compartment that would be handy for make-up, lollies, and any other important items that you need at your fingertips. There was a retractable second rearvision mirror that gave a full view of the back seat. If we had kids it would be good to see what the little angels were up to, but for us it would be equally as useful to check what ‘Ruby the wonder-dog’ was chewing on.

The hatch was not too heavy and was quite easy to put up. There was a double parcel shelf so you could put two layers of shopping in without squashing anything, and for the bigger purchases the shelf could be easily removed. There’s also a handy retractable cover to prevent people eyeing-off your luggage.

IT’S got a funky new look to it and a few features that will appeal to a younger market than the traditional CRV buyer, but it’s still a very practical vehicle for the family. The Verdict: The CR-V is a funky and practical option for young singles couples, or families alike. Priced between $31,990 plus on road costs (Standard CR-V) and $41,990 plus on road costs (CR-V Luxury Auto) which includes heated leather seats and reverse parking sensors, it’s also a very affordable vehicle, but you can option-up your CR-V as much as you like. ■

the taxi driver With a passion for cars, Mick Moorehead is a man whose life revolves around them.

Owner and manager of local business Australian FORwarD Dismantlers in East Bendigo, Mick and his crew of six have created a valued reputation within the community, offering advice and a wide range of second hand Ford and Hyundai Parts.

Although dismantling cars isn’t all Mick does. Over the past year Australian FORwarD Dismantlers have sold over ten custom-built duel cab utes, which have been created from Ford and Hyundai Excel by Mick himself.

This year saw Mick embark on a new endeavour. Thinking that something new and interesting was in order, Mick and his team took on the challenge of converting a 1999, Ford AU Taxi with 560,000kms on the clock, into a hotted up street rod to enter in the 2007 Summernats held in Canberra.

Countless nights were spent at the shop working on every aspect of the car; from the paint to the motor, the exhaust to the diff. The end result was an ex-Cohuna taxi with a running meter and vinyl seats now packing a Cleveland straight methanol engine with nitrous oxide injection under the hood and plans for further modifications in the near future such as a blower being inserted. For a more authentic feel, sheep-skin covers were placed over the seats and taxi stickers were left on the inner windscreen, dash-board and over the exterior paintjob.

After a mad dash to Melbourne in order to pick up a feul pump from VPW before it closed, the car was complete by two o’clock in the morning. Seven o’clock that same morning the guys (along with their taxi) set off to Canberra. An excess of cars entered in the Summernats meant the Taxi was denied a chance to show its stuff on the burnout pad on the Friday night, but due to their run at the 134

previous Summernats, where they were finalists, Mick and his team were put through to the finals anyway.

With the sky full of clouds threatening to pour down on the event all day, the competition went on. Mick displayed some real driver ability, burning up the tyres and creating plenty of smoke even under heavy winds. Omitting a roar, that coming from a taxi just seems frightening, it was an obvious crowd-pleaser, spectators hollering ‘Taxi’ and asking ‘How much for a ride?’

After the competition, a picture of the car graced the front cover of Extreme magazine.

Completely satisfied with the response towards the car Mick and the Australian FORwarD dismantlers team returned to work - although I’m a certain that the sound of this engine will not fade softly into the night but more spin through the heads of fans for some time to come.

Mick and the guys are already anticipating their next big project, similar in style to that of the taxi, a 1939 BP pick-up and service truck will receive The Australian FORwarD Dismantlers magic touch and be turned into a beast of the tarmac.

hopley demolition It’s been 30 years or so since Hopley Demolition first started knocking around Bendigo, and as owner Ken Hopley says, “We’ve worked on just about every street in Bendigo!” Some notable ‘landmark’ buildings include Kell Pell Sports and Fernwood in Bath Lane (prior to the current Bendigo Bank extension), the Baby Health Centre at Alexandra Fountain (now the lovely paved space at the entry to Rosalind Park) and most recently the Rocklea site in Kangaroo Flat (which was destroyed by fire and is now looking to house a shopping complex). They also worked on the oldest building in Maldon – not demolishing it, but taking down part of it and then restoring it. Son,
