eghan Harty graciously invited us to her sacred healing ranch in Sisters to photograph her for her feature and she offered me a free horse coaching session. It began in her tipi with a crackling, cozy fire outside. We talked about my intentions for the session.

Then we moved onto her Medicine Wheel for a powerful Centering Exercise. Raven wisdom keepers were soaring above our heads and I realized this was no ordinary coaching session!

it was pure alchemy. Then we journeyed on from the Medicine Wheel to the horse pen, decorated with colored flags for the 4 directions. One horse, Mocha, chose to join me, to be my guide. The horses decide for themselves if they want to participate in the session.

Community Wellness Center | GO FUND ME

am currently raising funds to establish a Community Wellness Center for our Bend Health Group that brings our Community together for true connections, healing, growth and collaboration.

I'm on a mission to create a healing space where we can join together for Health related classes, workshops, retreats, networking events and have a healing spa with treatment rooms. There is a silver lining to last year, some incredible spaces are coming on the market now! I have found a gorgeous building that will be coming on the market this Fall. It even has space for an established community garden & outdoor events. The time is now to secure a building that we can use for a Community Healing Space in Bend for years to come.

I have my Real Estate License plus I have been doing grant writing & fundraising this year for this cause..

I also started a Go Fund Me account.

STAINED

GLASS

T

he dramatic shift of 2020 brought an unexpected new reality to my life and family. My normal life of working 9 hour days to provide for my household and spending little time at home was about to change drastically. I remember when I called my mom, Penny, to tell her I wanted to work on small pieces of stained glass for fun.

Then suddenly, she experienced a life altering medical emergency and had to downsize her business. Her Glass and Mirror Shoppe was bustling but there was little time to spend on her 40 years old craft business of Stained Glass Overlay. I would be the one to take on the family business and it became a much-needed creative outlet.

As a single parent, my mom Penny, raised my sister, Brandy, and I on her income from Stained Glass Overlay. This urgent shift in my mom’s business made me pack up Sunny, my daughter, Cookie, my older dog, borrow a trailer from my friend, Johnny and head south to Carlsbad, CA to bring my family's business home. Driving with a trailer in tow is an experience that will never be forgotten and an adventure of a lifetime with Sunny and Cookie by my side. It brought tears, laughter, hard work, days of training, and a refreshed bond of family. It’s an emotional journey

Y

our physical and psychological body benefits immensely from movement. In today’s busy, stressful, and screen-filled world it is increasingly important to prioritize moving in ways that feel good to you. In the last year, many of you have found yourself sitting more, spending more time on screens, stressed about all the unknowns…

Maybe you adopted less than optimal coping strategies like scrolling social media, more time streaming shows, drinking more, etc. There is no judgment in those strategies, you do what you can to manage at the moment. Now, a year later, you’re hearing about negative impacts of so much sitting and feeling that impact in your body. It's time to prioritize your health and change those coping strategies that became habits.

If you’re looking to add more movement into your day and feel overwhelmed with the idea of an hour of exercise before or at the end of the day, I would like to offer the idea of “Movement Snacks," small bouts of activity interspersed throughout your day like:

SETTING AN ALARM to remind you to do a few spine mobility exercises or stretches at your desk.

Pick an exercise or 2 and do 10-20 reps each hour, squats, lunges, push-ups, plank holds.

GET UP AND MOVE around inside or outside your home for 2 minutes with a goal of movement during 75% of waking hours. 16 wake hours/day = 12 moving hours/day WALK AROUND THE BLOCK or take the dog for a 5-10 minute walk during your breaks. Yes! I’m encouraging you to take your 15 minute AND lunch breaks!

Introducing... Central Oregon's New Event Venue

I

t may sound crazy in times like these, there is now an awesome, much needed event venue space opening up in the heart of Bend. The building that once housed Central Oregon's beloved 2nd Street Theater is now a newly renovated Open Space Event Studios. The space will still serve the theater and performing arts community, it has been designed to broadly serve the needs of film/photography production, business events, educational workshops and community gatherings.

True to its name and central to its mission, Open Space offers a beautiful space for arts, culture, and business communities of Bend. Open Space has three studios to meet various needs. The highlight of this venue is a 1500 sq. ft. theater room with an adjacent enclosed outdoor patio. It's equipped with a stage, lighting, projection and kitchenette. Accompanying a larger room is a spacious 350 sq ft. meeting room that can be joined or separated from the rest of the venue. A third smaller studio is outfitted as a permanent photography studio and video podcast production set. The entire venue is furnished with a high quality AV system, each studio has a presentation screen. The aesthetic of the space is contemporary and minimal while accentuating the industrial roots of the building. Dynamic lighting and natural light come through glass garage doors giving the space an expansive feeling.

Open Space sits at an intersection of town in the burgeoning Bend Central District, declared as an area for urban renewal. Open Space seeks to be a physical and symbolic intersection for artistic, cultural and professional growth to accompany and define the kind of re-developnment Bend is looking for. Milkweed Seeds for Monarchs

Monarch Butterfiles are in severe decline, their numbers have gone from 1 million recorded in the 1990s down to only 135,000 counted in 2020. Female Monarch butterflies will only lay their eggs on Milkweed seeds, as a way to ensure their

offspring will be fed, so if there is no milkweed habitat around, they simply won't lay their eggs.

One sip of Under My Umbrella and suddenly it’s summer, with all its charm and delight.

2 oz reposado tequila ½ oz elderflower liqueur (find the recipe in the book!) ½ oz elderflower simple syrup ¾ oz lime juice 2 cups of ice coarse sea salt lime wheel Prepare your glass by rubbing the rim with a lime and coating it with salt. In a blender, combine tequila, elderflower liqueur, simple syrup, lime juice, and ice.

Blend well. Pour into your prepared glass and garnish with a lime wheel.

Elderflower Simple Syrup 1 cup of elderflower blossoms ½ cup sugar ½ cup water 1 inch piece of lemon peel Remove blossoms from stems. Simmer sugar and water in a small pot. Once sugar has dissolved and syrup has thickened, add elderflower blossoms & lemon peel, cover, & steep for 30 minutes. Cool before using.

empLime, also known as hempcrete, is a building material made by mixing hemp hurd (the chopped up inner stalk of the industrial hemp plant), a hydrated lime-based binder and water. It is installed within a wood framed structure and takes the place of insulation, house wrap, exterior sheeting and interior drywall. THE GIVING PLATE PROJECT, we built an indoor, climate-controlled farming system that they could operate year-round, without being subjected to the constraints of growing seasons. They loved the idea, within a few weeks of designing the system & planning, we were well on our way. During the build-phase of this project, a global pandemic threatened to completely derail it. Fortunately, we were only delayed by about a month. We successfully completed the vertical installation and harvested our first crop at the end of August 2020. The Giving Plate has since harvested lettuce and kale varieties several times over in the past 6 months. Veggies are being distributed in food boxes for their guests. We’ve also created an abundance of resources and implemented our training program so that the volunteer staff at The Giving Plate are able to successfully manage their Grow Room on their own.

A LABYRINTH OF

embers of the Unity Community of Central Oregon have constructed a Labyrinth, they are inviting the public to walk through it as a way to recenter spiritually in these challenging times we are navigating. The labyrinth is comprised of stones following a circular path. The area is wheelchair assessable and includes a beautiful finger labyrinth for those unable to physically enter the larger labyrinth. There's also a meditation area with stone benches. The labyrinth is located on the Eastside of the spiritual organization’s property at Highway 20 and Cooley Road. It is available to all, dawn to dusk, at no cost.

The labyrinth was designed by LEN Meserve, a 77-year-old builder in Bend, who has built more than 100 labyrinths across the U.S. Since moving to Bend, 14 years ago, he has built about 20 in the city. The Unity Community labyrinth is unique in that it contains two entries and two paths. The design is intended to foster personal empowerment and remembrance of our power to choose. Meserve notes that people often come to labyrinths looking for guidance. “If you have a question, come with your question,” Meserve said.

There is instructional signage on-site to help visitors get centered and make the most of their labyrinth experience. Unity Community of Central Oregon hopes many people find peace, comfort and clarity through our new, beautiful labyrinth.

Jane Hiatt, senior minister at Unity Community of Central Oregon, said building a labyrinth was always

a goal ever since the organization moved onto the property in 2018. Having it become a reality seems fitting considering all the turmoil in the world. For Hiatt, there is value in slowing down and re-centering in the labyrinth. “These are insane times we are in,” she said. “It’s connecting to what is real. Hot Lake Lodge Hot Springs M

y family journeyed to Hot Lake Lodge, passing painted hills & going through John Day, a passage through time as the sign says. Hot lake lodge has a fascinating history of healing. Once used medicinally by Native Americans, the lake was called “Ea-Kesh-Pa” by the Nez Perce.

In 1908 the brick building was completed as the first known structure in the world to utilize geothermal energy as its primary heat source. It was purchased by Dr. Phy in 1917 as a Sanitorium, a popular medical resort for the wealthy. Later it became a nurse's training facility during World War II. Then it changed hands and owners several times for various medical uses, mostly serving women's health. Later, it was abandoned in the nineties where it fell prey to vandals and the elements. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The hot springs were strong with a sulfur egg smell that tells you just how powerful they are! There's five lakeside, mineral rich, hot spring soaking pools available to guests of the lodge only with more soaking experiences coming soon.

Is it HAUNTED? Many say it is haunted with screams of the nurse who fell into the 200 degree lake and died or the gardener who took his life. The lake is ominous as it is dangerous. I don't blame them for not allowing dogs, our Lab would surely go jumping into that lethal lake for a swim! Robert E. Lee’s wife was known to play a piano on the third floor, people still hear her piano playing by itself. You may hear creaking of old doors opening and closing, things that go bump in the night. My great grandmother was a mystic and a medium, I have her energetic sensitivities, too.

There was nothing scary about this place. I slept so well after each day of soaking, not even a ghost could wake me!

It is an extremely old building, 114 years old now! I love old buildings, I once lived in a Carriage House from the 1800s. It's not for everyone, if

· recipe · Chocolate Cheesecake by SALUD Makes 12 mini cheesecakes or one 9 inch Cheesecake

Crust: • 2 cups unsoaked, almonds • 1 tsp. vanilla • About 12 soft medjool dates, pitted • 1/4 tap. Sea salt • Cheesecake: • 3 cups soaked cashews • 1 cup maple syrup • 3/4 cup cacao powder (not cocoa) • 1 cup almond milk or milk substitute of choice • 1 cup melted coconut oil *Make it a Mocha cheesecake by adding 3 TBS organic freeze dried coffee or Mayan by adding cinnamon and cayenne powder to taste!

Making the Crust: Process almonds in a food processor until all chunks gone.

Add the rest of the ingredients and process. Press into a 12 mini silicone mold or a 9 inch spring form cheesecake pan.

Set aside.

Chocolate Sauce: • 1/2 cup cacao powder • 1/2 cup melted coconut oil • 1/4 cup maple syrup (this will work better if the syrup is slight warm here) Place all ingredients in a food processor and blend well.

For the Cheesecake: Put all ingredients except melted coconut oil into a high speed blender. Blend until smooth. Add coconut oil and blend until incorporated. Pour on top of crust.

Drop some chocolate sauce and use a toothpick to swirl around. Get creative with the design! Freeze (make sure it is level!) for at lease 4 hours. Take out of mold(s) and defrost in the refrigerator for about 30-60 min. ENJOY!
