Roots, Re ection, and Resilience
We all know there is a lot of chaos in the world right now—social and political turmoil, climate change, fears about A.I., the rising cost of basic survival, and the relentless pace of life. The individual and collective anxiety this creates can feel overwhelming.
And yet, in response to this instability, I have witnessed something beautiful emerging here at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Central Oregon (UUFCO). Just as humans have done for millennia, we are turning toward one another for community and toward our own inner depth. We are finding hope, solace, and resilience.
In my role as minister at UUFCO, I have a front-row seat to this life-giving shift. People who have felt isolated for years are finding belonging and purpose—not something handed down or forced upon them, but something they are co-creating with other like-minded, like-hearted peo-
ple. Together, they are affirming a simple truth: we are stronger together.
At the same time, I see a growing interest in the deeper questions. Whether you call them spiritual, religious, philosophical, ethical, or none of the above, more and more people are asking what gives life meaning in the face of uncertainty. For some, the path is prayer, reflection, or meditation. For others, it is found in connections shaped by laughter and tears. Many encounter it in nature, in singing, or in acts of justice. Though we receive inspiration from different sources, here we say, “Diverse Beliefs, One Fellowship.” Our shared commitment to love and living our values binds us together.
I do not believe this movement toward rootedness and depth is a passing trend. It is a response to a deep human call, and it will remain because the shared longing is the same: to create roots that help us stay grounded and relationships that keep us growing toward a richer life.
At UUFCO, we are always exploring new ways of

DESCHUTES PUBLIC LIBRARY’S
Next Chapter
Deschutes County’s population has nearly doubled in the last 25 years. Thanks to a 2020 bond measure passed by voters, Deschutes Public Library is keeping pace with that growth. The La Pine, Sunriver, and Sisters libraries have been remodeled and updated; the new Redmond Library opened in early 2025; the Downtown Bend Library will undergo renovation in 2026 and be completed in spring 2027; and a brandnew Central Library opens in early May 2026.
Located at 61956 SE Santorini Street in east Bend, the Central Library is designed to meet the evolving needs of a growing region. As the community expands, so does the demand for books, gathering spaces, technology access, meeting rooms, and
hands-on learning opportunities. This three-story, net-zero building responds to that call.
“From the first floor to the third, this library is designed to give the community ample space to explore and connect, whether that’s a planned or serendipitous encounter,” says Library Director Todd Dunkelberg. And it’s all happening in a building that was constructed to meet LEED Gold standards. “Solar panels on the roof and over parking areas, all-electric systems, and bird-safe glass all reflect our commitment to environmental stewardship,” Dunkelberg added.
The first floor features a browsable collection of new and popular books, convenient holds pickup, and the ever-expanding Library of Things collection. A
large, divisible meeting room provides flexible space for programs, events, and civic conversations. With a Thump Café onsite, visitors can also linger over coffee, creating space for informal connection.
The second floor centers children and teens, with expansive areas that support discovery, creativity, and learning. From early literacy story times to afterschool study sessions, the library offers young residents room to grow academically and socially.
On the third floor, adults will find fiction and nonfiction collections alongside collaborative coworking areas, reservable meeting rooms, and a hands-on MakerSpace. The space supports everyone from casual readers to entrepreneurs and remote workers.
More than a facility, the new Central Library is shared infrastructure for opportunity—where neighbors gather, ideas take shape, and residents of all ages find resources to reach for their dreams.
Thoughtful Landscape Design
There is something truly special about being invited into someone’s home to help create a meaningful connection to their outdoor living space.
