A M ES S AG E FR O M THE HEA D COACH I’m thrilled to be taking the helm of the HRHS baseball program in 2020. Actually, we’ve already been hard at it since October with strength and conditioning workouts. The energy and enthusiasm is outstanding, and we are seeing strength gains in our players, as we knew we would.

They are showing tremendous commitment to this “progressive program”—a workout program that began with a foundational base working on proper technique and large muscle group movement, while incorporating explosive and rotational components. Movements and lifts increase in difficulty and resistance as time goes on, and as we have now hit January, players will continue explosive movements while adding more and more rotational and small muscle group exercises. These lifts are designed specifically to create muscular balance and build strength throughout range of motion in the smaller, supportive and stabilizer muscles.

As the lifting and conditioning continued, we also got rolling with hitting, and then pitching mechanics right before the sun set on the 2019 calendar year. Beginning with the return to school on January 7, a progressive 8-week throwing program will start—along with fielding drills--to add to the hitting, lifting, and bio-mechanics.

So why 212°? Sometimes mottos and catch phrases become mundane…same old, same old. In a search for something to encourage our players and create a team focus, I settled on 212°, The Extra Degree. The thought is simple, yet profound. At 211°, water is hot. But at 212°, water boils—and boiling water produces steam, and steam can move a locomotive. All because of that one extra degree. Our goal is to put forth that one extra degree of effort in everything we do. Every day, every workout, every drill. All it takes is one extra degree of effort to make big changes in our performance, attitude, and teamwork. Over and over, our players will hear coaches ask them, “Is that 212°? Where are you---what’s your focus and effort level?”
