Welcome to the 2025 Benalla Street Art Festival, held from 11–13 April.
Watch as 10 talented artists bring Benalla’s walls and laneways to life in a large-scale, al fresco art gallery.
Curated by Eddie Zammit, the Festival features talented local, Melbourne-based and interstate artists in a weekend celebration of arts, colour and culture.
Benalla Rural City will be transformed with 10 new murals and a festival schedule of community fringe events, artist talks and workshops, street art tours, and live art activities.
Building on the incredible momentum of last year’s Benalla Street Art Festival, where 15 striking murals transformed our streets, this year we continue the journey. In 2025, we celebrate the power of public art with 10 new dynamic murals created live throughout the festival, adding to Benalla’s evolving visual identity.
At the conclusion of this year’s Festival, Benalla will have seen 25 different mural artists bring their work to life since 2024. These large-scale works not only enhance our urban spaces but also inspire community connection, conversation and creativity, making Benalla a more vibrant and inviting destination for locals and tourists alike.
Thank you to our sponsors, local businesses, volunteers, advisory committee members and staff for your hard work in supporting the return of this much-loved Festival.

At the heart of Claire’s work is a strong understanding of colour, materiality, and form, where surfaces are treated like a canvas and built up in layers. This approach to process on such a large scale, and the balance between intention and improvisation, is a hallmark of Claire’s work.

EXHIBITIONS
Art Gallery 11 April – 4 May 2025
Rise, Ruin, Renew, Repeat embodies the cycle of creation and destruction, blending themes of existence, struggle, and transcendence. The exhibition has two distinct halves, each exploring different aspects of this cycle.
One theme is oil paintings on concrete that have been violently disrupted — meticulously crafted works, over 50 hours in the making, shattered into rubble by a hammer in a chaotic flurry. This destruction speaks to the inevitable decay and despair inherent in life.
The other theme is a celebration of life and movement through a series of large paintings inspired by dance. Dance, as a form of expression, connects us to the divine, embodying renewal and the joy of existence. This continues themes from Jason’s previous exhibitions, delving into the duality of humanity, society, and nature itself — the endless cycle of creation, destruction, and rebirth.
To bring his vision to life, Jason collaborated with a diverse team of metal fabricators, dancers, photographers, videographers, musicians, and set builders. His aim is to create an immersive, emotionally resonant experience that lingers with viewers long after they’ve left the space. Unlike previous exhibitions, he has shifted away from a literal narrative, embracing a more ambiguous, emotionally charged approach.
As visitors move through Rise, Ruin, Renew, Repeat, they are invited to experience the visceral push and pull of creation and destruction, each element interwoven to provoke contemplation of our own cycles. This journey through contrasting realms — chaos and order, despair and hope — asks them to reflect on the impermanence of all things and the resilience of renewal. With each artwork, installation, and soundscape, Jason’s hope is to immerse visitors in a space where the remnants of destruction give rise to new beginnings, resonating beyond the gallery walls and into our own cycles of change.

Baby Guerrilla is an artist, based in Naarm/ Melbourne, interested in approaching space and perspective in new and innovative ways inside and outside a gallery or traditional art space.
Baby Guerrilla’s work is layered; there is no singular narrative or reading. She makes it to be open to the insights, thoughts, feelings, and interpretations that the viewer brings. As well as aspects of everyday life and human connection, Baby Guerrilla explores our connection to, and impact upon, this earth.
Her first street works were partly autobiographical depictions of tiny women falling naked from the sky. They reflected her own vulnerability, a longing for connection and somewhere to land. Other figures are often in a state of floating. Some of them seem to be in a trance and some in a state of transition or transformation mid-air. Some of them are being held onto by others. What’s common amongst all of these is that they are open to a variety of interpretations.

Near and Far is a culmination of two ongoing bodies of work created over the past seven years. These bodies of work combine pictures made in distant places whilst travelling, alongside scenes much closer to home:
Someplace/Somewhere is a series of photographs depicting murals in small towns all over Australia. Unsuspecting walls act as a canvas to depict scenes from someplace else. These scenes, encountered in suburban backyards, rural supermarkets and agricultural areas leave the viewers wondering who the artists were who painted them?
The Lake is an ongoing series of photographs made on and around Lake Eildon, examining the intersections between leisure, agriculture and the natural environment. This selection of works, mostly taken in early morning fog or late evening light, depicts a quiet calmness on the lake - a contrast to the drone of boat motors and action that often inhabits the lake.
2025 MASCOT: GROWLING GRASS FROG
Following on from last year’s official mascots designed by Travis Price (based on local native wildlife — the platypus, kangaroo, and cockatoo), this year’s mascot is based on the Growling Grass Frog. With a little help from our friends at the Winton Wetlands, we want to share some interesting information about this important local species.
• Growling Grass Frogs lower their metabolic rate and go into an amphibian hibernation during winter called ‘brumation‘.
• Growling Grass Frogs are active night hunters.
• Growling Grass Frog females can lay a clutch of up to 4500 eggs!
• Growling Grass Frogs like to bask in the sun for healthy development and protection from certain diseases.
HANDS-ON PAINTING
During the Festival, you can contribute to a free community mural activity designed by Mimi Leung, featuring the Growling Grass Frog mascot, at the Festival Hub from 1pm to 4pm daily.
2025 OFFICIAL ILUSTRATOR: MIMI LEUNG

In 2024, Mimi presented the major exhibition Growing Up With You at Benalla Art Gallery, and her commercial clients have included Transport For London, Disney Australia, Samsung, Slurpee, and The New York Times. @mimileungyeh
WHILE IN BENALLA: WINTON WETLANDS
The construction of Lake Mokoan (built in the late 1960s and commissioned in 1971) flooded the wetland ecosystem and River Red Gum swampland, resulting in the loss of habitat for the Growling Grass Frog, leading to its local extinction.
Winton Wetlands are currently working towards re-wilding the Growling Grass Frog as part of its efforts to restore the wetland ecosystem.
The Growling Grass Frog is a keystone wetland species. Its successful reintroduction will return an important predator and prey species back into the wetland ecosystem and is one part in the complex process of restoring ecosystem function and resilience.
Make a visit to Winton Wetlands during your stay in Benalla for a unique outdoor experience that combines nature, wildlife, art and culture, and more.
