BEMIDJI — Bemidji Area Aglow is set to meet from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Jan. 13, at Beltrami Electric, 4111 Technology Drive NW. “Come and join us as we welcome in the New Year with praise and prayer,” a release said.

James V.F. Dickey, UMLC Lead Counsel, on critical developments in Minnesota Law

James Dickey is the Senior Counsel for the Upper Midwest Law Center, a public interest law firm based in the Twin Cities.

Mr. Dickey will offer remarks on UMLC’s current cases, potential new cases, and will highlight major constitutional problems created by the Legislature in its 2023 session, including a brief review of laws already struck down by courts.

Mr. Dickey will speak on these issues on: Thursday, January 18, 6:00 p.m. at Bemidji State University’s Hagg-Sauer 150 lecture auditorium. Several microphones will circulate the audience for an interactive conversation.

Friday, January 19, 8:00 a.m. at a breakfast Meet & Greet at the Bemidji Eagles Club.

This meeting is focused on making critical connections with Bemidji’s business leaders and local government leaders.

Both sessions are open to the general public.

NEWS BRIEFS Headwaters to offer finger-pick guitar class

BEMIDJI — Headwaters Music and Arts will host a finger-pick guitar class from 5 to 5:45 p.m. or 6 to 6:45 p.m. on Wednesdays, Jan. 17 through Feb. 14, at Headwaters, 519 Minnesota Ave. NW. The five-week course will be led by singer, guitarist and educator Antonio Arce and will explore finger-picking techniques and the history of different songs and their authors, a release said.

Song choices will include “Falling in Love With You,” “Play Me,” “Time In a Bottle” and more.

The course is for intermediate to advanced guitarists ages 15 and older.

Reading music is not a requirement for the class.

Arce was born in Salta, Argentina as the eldest son of a professional musician.

“Although Arce picked up the guitar very quickly he did not learn the names of the chords or the notes in either Spanish or English,” the release said. “Instead, Antonio learned to play by ear.”

Space is limited to four participants per session.

The cost to participate is $100 per person for all five classes.

Bemidji Senior Center offers trips to Chanhassen Theater, Mackinac Island

BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Senior Center is offering trips to the Chanhassen Dinner Theater on Jan. 31 and Mackinac Island from June 22-26.

The center will host an informational meeting on the trip to Mackinac Island at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 18.

Tour Director Sharie Linke will give a presentation outlining all the aspects and costs of the summer trip. The tour will not only include two nights on the island at a historic Victorian hotel on Mackinac’s Main Street, but will also feature the beautiful sights along the way, including a narrated tour of the Apostle Islands, a release said.

Coffee and treats will be provided at the meeting. Participants should sign up for the meeting by stopping by the center or calling (218) 751-8836.

On Wednesday, Jan. 31, the Senior Center will lead a bus trip to see “Jersey Boys” at the Chanhassen Dinner Theater.

“Jersey Boys” tells the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons.

“With phenomenal music, memorable characters and great storytelling, ‘Jersey Boys’ follows

the fascinating evolution of four blue-collar kids who became one of the greatest successes in popmusic history,” the release said. “Experience electrifying performances of chart-topping hits including ‘Sherry,’ ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry,’ ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,’ ‘Dawn’ and ‘My Eyes Adored You,’ which brought The Four Seasons the highest honor: induction into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame.”

The bus will load at 6:15 a.m. at the Cenex South Parking Lot, 120 Convenience Lane SW. Participants will depart at 6:30 a.m. and return by approximately 8:30 p.m.

The cost is $148 for members and $158 for non-members. Lunch, a snack bag for the bus ride home, the play ticket and transportation are included.

Cozy up to upcoming winter movie releases METRO CREATIVE SERVICES Even though it may have been many weeks since the nation collectively adjusted their clocks to “fall back,” now that the holiday twinkle lights that illuminated homes and businesses have been put away, midwinter darkness may seem even more apparent. The hours of daylight are incrementally increasing, but with the sun still setting relatively early, those eager to fill the evening hours may be wondering how to pass the time.

and other favorite treats, movie-goers will not be bothered by falling snow or the sun setting outdoors. It’s time to gear up for a new year of feature films. Here’s a look at movies coming to big and small screens soon enough.

• “The Beekeeper” (January 12): A man is on a brutal campaign for vengeance. The stakes are elevated when it is revealed he is a former operative of a clandestine group known as “Beekeepers.” The film stars Jason Statham, Josh Hutcherson and Minnie Driver.

• “Mean Girls” (January 12): This is the film adaptation of the musical version that made waves on

Broadway. The Plastics, an A-list clique at school, welcome a new student, but things go awry when she makes the mistake of falling for the ex-boyfriend of the Plastics’ leader. Tina Fey, John Hamm, Jenna Fischer, and an assortment of teen stars comprise the cast.

• “The Book of Clarence” (January 12): Set in biblical times, the movie tells the tale of Clarence, a down-on-his-luck denizen of Jerusalem trying to capitalize on the influence of the Messiah for his own gain. Benedict Cumberbatch, Omar Sky, James McAvoy, and LaKeith Stanfield are among the cast members.
