4. Will your grandchildren feel welcome?

While some retirement communities have swing sets and little playgrounds for visiting grandkids, others cap the number of days that minors can spend the night. The idea is that they don't want under-aged residents moving in on a permanent basis. This kind of policy may feel draconian to those who cherish every hour with their grandkids and want the little ones over as much as possible.

It also might preclude your adult kids from returning to the nest if they can't find jobs. It's best to check the community's policy about visitors who are younger than the minimum age requirement and make sure you are in agreement before you commit to living there.

5. Is the bottom line the bottom line?

Retirement is all about living on a fixed income, right? You know what's coming in each month and it's important to know what's going out. Make sure you know what's included in your monthly homeowners association dues. While "use of the clubhouse" may be included, morning yoga classes may be extra.

1. Are you looking for bingo or competitive tennis on Thursdays?

Some retirement communities have lowered the age-admission bar to 50. But therein lies the rub: Just because they let 50-year-olds in, doesn't mean everyone who lives there is 50. Do you really want to be the only 50 year old in a community where most people are in their 80s?

A retirement community can be a little evasive when you ask about the age of residents, in part because it's constantly changing. The average age of residents tends to rise as the community matures, so while the average age of new buyers might be on the young side, you want to be sure you know the average age of all the residents who live there. It's an important distinction. One surefire way to evaluate who your neighbors will be is to check out who the recreational programs cater to. Is it heavy with clubs for marathoners, tennis players and Pilates classes? Or is loaded with offerings like knitting, Mahjong and bridge?

2. Is it a place where you'll find friends "With The Same Major"?

People come to a retirement community expecting to find a built-in circle of friends with similar interests. It's flawed thinking. Just because two people are the same age doesn't mean they like the same things.

The solution is to find people "with the same major" -- people interested in the same things as you are. This thinking has fueled what is known as affinity retirement communities -- places developed around a specific interest.

3. Will you grow old or stay young here?

Studies have shown that active people are happier and healthier. With this in mind, you will want to pick a retirement community that keeps you engaged. One thing to consider is a community in or near a college. Colleges and universities frequently let seniors audit classes for free. College campuses also have many free and low-cost cultural offerings -- concerts, art shows, visiting authors. Retirement communities tend to be built out in deserts or on the outskirts of town where land is cheaper. It may be worth paying a premium for locations closer to the things that will keep you happiest -and that includes being near old friends and family.

Drum Hill Senior Living Community’s Oktoberfest Boomers & Beyond - Westchester

A great time was had by all at the annual Drum Hill Senior Living Community’s Oktoberfest. The weather was beautiful and allowed for our residents and guests to enjoy strolling our grounds to see the foliage on the river and all of our festive decorations. While inside the building they were able to listen to authentic German music provided by the band. The food was delicious and included many of our chef’s ethnic treats like hot German potato salad, homemade red cabbage and sauerbraten to name a few. Of course the beer and wine flowed, with the big finale consisting of apple strudel and German Chocolate Cake!

Next onto the holiday’s season which is always a treat at Drum Hill Senior Living Community with our residents and staff starting to decorate our historic building while planning parties to help celebrate the season.

Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino congratulated winners at the 24th annual Golden Harvest Awards on October 8 at Tappan Hill.

“Each year the Golden Harvest Awards recognize the outstanding contributions of those people and organizations that make Westchester such a smart place for seniors,” Astorino said. “This year’s honorees have dedicated themselves to serving seniors and have enhanced the quality of life for all Westchester residents.”

The Westchester Public/Private Partnership for Aging Services (WPPP) sponsored the event, which recognized the following winners:

Visiting Nurse Association of the Hudson Valley (VNAHV) will receive the Golden Harvest Corporate Award. Michele Quirolo, President and CEO of VNAHV since 1994, will accept the award.

Founded in 1898 to provide nursing care for local residents, VNAHV has a long history of providing innovative healthcare services to the community. Today, VNAHV is a family of organizations that share a mission to provide the best quality healthcare to all people – from newborns to the elderly. VNAHV’s services include skilled nursing, certified home health aides, hospice, physical, occupational and speech therapies, palliative care, social work, nutritional counseling and healing arts programs.

Barbara Finkelstein, CEO of Legal Services of the Hudson Valley (LSHV), will receive the Jim Curran Leadership Award.

Finkelstein oversees all aspects of LSHV, the largest provider of free civil legal services to more than 600,000 poor and low-income individuals. Under her leadership, LSHV has increased its budget sevenfold and has grown to be a 125-person staff with a $14 million budget and eight offices. Finkelstein is the first woman to lead the organization and is a national leader on civil legal services.

Rev. W. Franklyn Richardson, Senior Pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, will receive the Golden Harvest Humanitarian Award.

Richardson has been head of the historic Grace Baptist Church since April 1975. Under his leadership, the congregation has continually thrived, growing to include more than 4,000 members as well as a second church in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

A longtime community builder and organizer, Rev. Richardson has played a pivotal role in the grassroots efforts of creating affordable housing and expanding educational and employment opportunities, especially in Mount Vernon.

Mae Carpenter, Commissioner of Westchester County's Department of Senior Programs and Services, said that the contributions of this year’s honorees have been outstanding, collectively helping tens of thousands of seniors and their families over the years.

“These are exceptional people doing terrific work,” Carpenter said. “On behalf of the seniors of Westchester County, I applaud and thank them for all they do.”

Mary Beth Morrissey is chair of the Westchester Public/Private Partnership, whose members are from government, businesses and social service agencies. The partnership develops resources for services that enable senior citizens to remain independent and active members of the community.

As far back as I can remember, I’ve loved to explore new places. As an adult, it could be as simple as trying a new restaurant or as complex as my upcoming solo trip to Hong Kong and Beijing. However, my love for adventure had much more humble beginnings. Back when I was small, I found myself exploring the woods behind the cabin that my family was vacationing in or wandering one block farther than my mother allowed. And even though on some level it can be a bit frightening (I’m a little nervous about the solo China trip since I’m not able to speak or read Chinese at all!), it doesn’t stop me from wanting to see new places and discover new things.

It turns out that this may be beyond my control. Scientists have discovered genome DRD4-7R, otherwise known as the “Wanderlust Gene.” According to researcher David Dobbs, some of the traits are a stronger urge to explore new places, ideas, foods and relationships, as well as a tendency to embrace adventure, movement and change. Aside from my lack of adventure when it comes to trying new cuisine (I don’t care that researchers from the Oxford of University say that bugs are healthier than steak or chicken, I still won’t eat them), I’d say this describes me pretty well.

In addition to the genetics involved, my upbringing definitely played a part. Travel was always a priority to my family. Every year, we always took a family vacation somewhere. I remember the excitement of piling into the car with my three sisters and taking off for parts unknown.

Some years we would drive for hours and end up in the Smoky Mountains, some years it was just a quick trip to a local cabin, but each year it was a destination that was very different from the suburban neighborhood in which we lived. The belief of embracing places and people that were different and unfamiliar became instilled in me at a young age.

Between nature and nurture, I didn’t have a chance. I’ve either got a trip planned, I’m on a trip or I’m researching where my next trip will be. Before I became a travel consultant (agent), I traveled extensively for work and if I had a week at home, I would start to get antsy.

Although I stumbled into becoming a travel consultant, it turned out to be a much better fit for me than my previous corporate job ever was. I am able to live vicariously through my clients and can share in their anticipation of their upcoming travel and their excitement of telling their travel adventures after their trip.

Although far from being a health care professional, I like to think that I help contribute to my clients’ health in my own way. Not only can a well-planned vacation give a person time away from stress, but there have been many studies that show that travel also reduces depression, death from heart disease and increases cognitive health. The best part? These benefits are seen after only a day or two of travel. I’m definitely not suggesting that this take the place of any course of treatment that a medical doctor has prescribed but I do think it’s a great supplement.

November's tip:

Travel this Thanksgiving is predicted to be the highest since 2007. If you are like me, you'll be one of the 3.5 million travelers that will be getting on a plane this year. Do yourself a favor and allow plenty of time before your flight. Even if you are an experienced flyer, allow extra time. Not only are there a LOT more people, and a lot of inexperienced flyers, in the airport, but traffic getting into the airport will be heavier as well. I know that this is not a new tip because I see it every year but it bears repeating for a reason. If you miss your holiday flight, you are not likely to find another one in time for your turkey dinner!

Planning a trip to the store usually involves looking up some recipes to make during the week, making a list and then scouting the aisles for the right stuff. Always read nutrition labels Some food marketing can be deceptive. To avoid being tricked by gimmicks, it's a good idea to learn how to properly read a nutrition label.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration suggested that consumers start by reading the number of servings per package. Often, food manufactures can make a product look healthier than it is by claiming one small package contains multiple servings. Once you've checked the amount of servings, look for the information about calories, cholesterol, saturated fat and sodium. As for vitamins and minerals, anything over 20 percent is considered high, according to the FDA. These steps are easy to remember while you’re perusing the grocery store aisles. Use them to create a tasty menu that contributes to good senior health.

Look for high-fiber foods A diet rich in fiber is part of a healthy lifestyle. According to the Mayo Clinic, dietary fiber can help to lower your cholesterol, control blood glucose levels and maintain the health of your bowels. Though the entire list of foods high in fiber is quite long, most fruits and vegetables will do the trick. A few examples of foods with a lot of dietary fiber include beans, carrots, apples, cauliflower, potatoes and peas.

Load up your cart with color The easiest way to get some variety in your diet is to mix and match the entire rainbow of colors. The University of North Dakota recommended eating fruits and vegetables from all over the color spectrum, as different colors often indicate the presence of different vitamins. For instance, orange plants contain carotenoids, which give them their unique color. Some orange plants are rich in vitamin A while others contain more B and C vitamins. White plants are often high in potassium, red plants may contain lycopene and green plants are good sources of folate.

People need all of these vitamins and minerals to stay healthy, so the more colorful your shopping cart, the better off you'll be.

Stay away from high fat meats Some fat in your diet is fine, and meat is a good source of protein.

But you should try to avoid meats that are too high in saturated fat. You can do this by selecting certain cuts of meat over others, or choosing different animals. For instance, Michigan State University suggested eating goat as a lower-fat alternative to more common meat options.The university said that goat typically contains half as much fat as beef and 40 percent less saturated fat than chicken.
