Higher temperatures are a part of the summer season, but over the last few years it seems that not a summer goes by without a fatal heat wave.

Seniors especially are at risk from heat related health problems. These conditions can range from mild discomfort to full-fledged emergencies.

Seniors are more prone to heat stress than younger people because: • They do not adjust as well as young people to sudden changes in temperature.

• They are more likely to have a chronic medical condition that upsets normal body responses to heat.

• They are more likely to take prescription medicines that impair the body's ability to regulate its temperature, or that inhibit perspiration.

Help seniors protect themselves from heat-related stress in these ways: • Make sure they are visited at least twice a day to be sure they don’t have any signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

• Make sure they are keeping themselves hydrated by drinking plenty of cool water.

• Encourage them to avoid beverages with caffeine or alcohol.

Alcohol, in particular, increases dehydration.

• Make sure they have access to an electric fan/air conditioning whenever possible.

• Suggest limiting appliance use and unnecessary lighting, which create heat.

• Encourage elders to stay indoors in a cool area during the hottest part of the day.

• If it is necessary to be outside, stay in the shade and limit exertion as much as possible.

• Encourage light-weight clothing.

Heat fatigue is a feeling of weakness. Symptoms include cool, moist skin and a weakened pulse. The person may feel faint.

Heat exhaustion is a warning that the body is getting too hot. The person may be thirsty, giddy, weak, uncoordinated, nauseous, and sweating profusely. The body temperature is usually normal and the pulse is normal or raised. The skin is cold and clammy. Although heat exhaustion often is caused by the body’s loss of water and salt, salt supplements should only be taken with advice from a doctor.

Heat stroke can be LIFE-THREATENING! A person with Heat stroke heat stroke has a body temperature above 104° F. Other symptoms may include confusion, combativeness, bizarre behavior, faintness, staggering, strong rapid pulse, dry flushed skin, lack of sweating, possible delirium or coma.

If you see any signs of severe heat stress, call for immediate medical assistance while you begin cooling the affected person: • Get the person to a shady area.

• Cool the person rapidly, for example: o Immerse the person in a cool bath o Place the person in a cool shower o Sponge the person with cool water • Continue cooling efforts until the body temperature drops to 101°–102°F. • Get medical assistance as soon as possible.

Summer is the time to celebrate warm weather and outdoor activities. We believe that there is truly something for everyone, at every age.

Walking, swimming, gardening, fishing, golf, tennis, even dining al fresco is another way to embrace the season!

Approaching the outdoors from a healthy perspective is essential as well; hydration, sunscreen, and insect repellant are all part of the summertime experience~But the social part of this beautiful season is also critical to health and well-being. This is the ideal time to think of your neighbors and invite them out for a walk, bring over some fresh produce from your garden, include them in your outdoor barbeque. Often people get depressed and isolated during the long winter months and summer can be your chance to reconnect and support those around you. Take the time to chat and to listen.

A healthy lifestyle includes physical, mental and emotional fortitude and fitness. We hope that some of the tips and topics covered in this issue will keep you thinking about your own best lifestyle and those around you as well. As a community we are all healthier when connected to each other.

Fitness Center

The Burke Adult Fitness Center is designed for adults 40 and older (or those with a qualifying disability) to provide a comfortable and safe environment for exercise. Each member of the fitness center requires a physician's approval to exercise and has to provide an in-depth health history. Based on the individual's health history and goals, the individual will have a specific exercise program designed by a certified personal trainer. The trainer will go through the program with the individual three times. This will help ensure that the trainer and member are both comfortable with the member's ability to exercise independently and safely.

The fitness center features FitLinxx, a unique computer system. This is a specially-designed computer system that11:31 enables AM personal trainers to set up a members' program at each exercise machine through an

individual computer. This allows for more instruction on each visit to reduce the amount of injuries caused by improper use of fitness equipment. The FitLinxx system also tracks everything the member does so that they can easily see the results of their exercise program.

The Burke Adult Fitness Center provides a variety of different programs and a state-of-the-art facility to meet the needs of adults interested in exercise programs. So whether you have just completed rehabilitative therapy, have an on-going medical condition or are simply interested in getting into shape, The Burke Adult Fitness Center is for you.

Monthly Tips for Seniors Here are some tips to help seniors stay safe in hot weather: Use Sunscreen: Experts recommend that seniors use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and one that’s easy to apply, such as a roll-on or spray. Also choose a broadspectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVB and UVA rays. Since seniors have sensitive skin, they should avoid sunscreens with alcohol, fragrances or preservatives that can cause irritation.

Drink Plenty of Water: Dehydration is the prime cause of many heat-related health issues, so encourage seniors to drink plenty of water while spending time outside in the summer, even if they aren’t thirsty. Try to limit alcoholic and caffeinated beverages as they can contribute to dehydration.

Wear Appropriate Clothing: No one likes to sit inside on a nice day, but it’s important to make sure seniors have the right clothing before heading out for a fun summer outing.

Light-colored, lightweight clothes and a wide-brimmed hat will help keep seniors cool and protected from the sun.

Take Frequent Breaks: If you are out with a senior on a hot day, make sure to take frequent breaks. Take things slow and find a cool, shady spot to sit and rest and have a glass of water now and then. Avoid any activity that is too strenuous.

Stay in Air-Conditioned Environments: During extreme heat, seniors should have access to air conditioning, and fans should not be relied upon as a primary cooling device. Always have their air conditioning unit checked before hot weather arrives to make sure it works properly. If they do not have AC, make sure they have a place to go in the event of extreme heat, like a local mall, library, or other public place. Local cooling centers are often set up in major cities during heat waves.

Know the Warning Signs of Heat Illnesses: During hot weather, if a loved one experiences dizziness, nausea, headache, rapid heartbeat, chest pain, fainting and breathing problems, seek medical assistance immediately.

Debra A. Arena, an area attorney, recently presented a joint program with Wartburg, a senior residential and healthcare provider located in Mount Vernon, New York, entitled “The Essentials of Estate Planning” to a packed room. Over 60 individuals from neighboring communities heard about the basics of how to provide future financial security for themselves and their loved ones while also learning about the many tax benefits associated with charitable donations.

The seminar also went over different kinds of tax savings and other benefits received from donations to not-for-profit institutions.

Alzheimer’s Association Hudson Valley Chapter holds third annual regional Dementia Conference Boomers & Beyond - Westchester

“Meeting of the Minds,” the third annual dementia conference by the Alzheimer’s Association Hudson Valley Chapter, was held recently at the DoubleTree by Hilton at 455 S. Broadway.

The conference was designed for people with early-stage dementia and their family caregivers, professionals, service providers and people who are fluent in Spanish. Continuing education credits from Fordham University were available for professional attendees.

“Meeting of the Minds” featured two keynote speakers. Dr. Peter Rabins, co-author of “The 36Hour Day” and co-director of the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry and Neuropsychiatry at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, who began the day with the presentation, “Dementia 2017: What Caregivers Can do Now.” A second keynote speaker, Mary Sano, Ph.D., director of the Alzheimer Disease Research Center at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, offered a research update with her talk, “In Search of a Cure and Prevention: Alzheimer’s Disease Clinical Trials.”

State Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins, DYonkers, also spoke about advocacy during the lunch portion of the program.

The conference also featured morning and afternoon breakout sessions on essential legal documents for families facing dementia, nurturing practices for caregivers and health professionals, treating behavioral symptoms associated with Alzheimer’s, paying for long-term care,

advocacy, creative arts activity planning and making patient care safer. Spanish-language breakout sessions were also offered in the morning and afternoon.

Many studies have shown that seniors generally don’t eat well and many different factors are responsible – changing taste buds, medication side effects, or simply a lack of interest in cooking for just one or two people.

As older adults have different nutritional requirements, their food should be a bit different as well, but the equation is quite simple – fewer calories and more protein, calcium, B vitamins, and other nutrients.

Here is a nutrient-dense recipe for seniors that will be both healthy and delicious.

Banana Split Oatmeal Here’s an excellent way to start your day.

The preparation time is about 10 minutes, 1 serving only.

Ingredients 1⁄3 cup oatmeal, quick-cooking (dry) 1⁄8 teaspoon salt 3⁄4 cups water (very hot) 1⁄2 banana (sliced) 1⁄2 cup frozen yogurt (non-fat) Preparation 1. Mix together the oatmeal and salt in a microwave safe cereal bowl, and stir in water.

2. Microwave on high power for 1 minute, then stir again.

3. Repeat the process several times until the cereal reaches the desired thickness, then stir again.

4. Top with banana slices and frozen yogurt.
