“The Art of Caregiving,” a conference to address the emotional and physical challenges that caregivers face in caring for loved ones of all ages, did take place Thursday, Nov. 19, at New Rochelle Public Library, 1 Lawton Street.

“Caregivers face enormous responsibilities,” Astorino said. “It is demanding work, but certainly rewarding. I want all caregivers to know that they are not alone in this journey, and that the county has various programs and events such as these to help support them along the way.”

The event’s guest speakers was Alvin and Gwen Clayton, restaurateurs, caregivers and active community leaders. Participants also had access to free, one-on-one consultations with elder law attorneys, geriatric social workers and geriatric care managers.

Westchester’s Telehealth Intervention Programs for Seniors (TIPS) was also be featured. Through TIPS, seniors can have

their vital signs monitored – including blood pressure, pulse, blood oxygen level and weight – and also make sure they are receiving all of the social services for which they may be eligible.

Separately throughout the year, Westchester County offers two caregiver programs as part of its award-winning Livable Communities initiative.

One is the “Caregiver Coaching” program, where volunteers are trained to provide one-on-one support to assist caregivers in making more informed decisions. The other is “Care Circles of Westchester: Step Forward and Give Back,” where a group of volunteers pitch in to assist an individual with the basic needs of daily living that cannot be met with public funds – such as walking the dog or simply providing companionship. Patricia started her nursing career 19 years ago at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and research institution in New York City, and since then has gained experience in Adult Intensive Care Units, Pediatric Care (PICU) Operating Room (OR) ,mental health and community health settings. She later moved into director of nursing roles, where she obtained extensive experience in leading and developing the nursing profession. 8 signs your aging parent can’t live alone

1. Mom or Dad has always been a great housekeeper, but the house just doesn’t look like it used to: Ask your parent if help is needed with the clutter, but do it in a nonchalant way that could prompt a conversation indicating assistance is needed here. Keep a keen eye to discern if the clutter and filth is getting worse with each visit - it’s often a key sign.

2. The checking account balance is wrong and bills are going unpaid: If the mail, with bills included, is piling up, there is a good chance that the bills are not getting paid.

You may also discover that your parent’s checking account ledger balance is wrong or in arrears.

These are also signs that your parent is having memory issues or difficulty with simple math cognition.

3. Your parent is losing a lot of weight: If the cupboard is bare and your parent’s frame is shrinking, living alone might become problematic. You may want to bring groceries or hire a service that offers prepared meal delivery.

Otherwise, you may have to think about putting them somewhere that helps them eat regular, healthy meals.

4. They have forgotten the basics of hygiene: If you notice that your parent is wearing the same clothing day in and day out or that their hair or skin appears dirty on a fairly regular basis, they may have lost the motivation, ability and/or forethought to look after them self.

5. There are signs of forgetfulness in the home: All too often there are stories of older people who accidentally burned their houses down because they left a pot on the stove for hours and fell asleep or have flooded the home when they forgot to turn off the tap. Or, perhaps more subtly, the milk is in the pantry and the bread is in the refrigerator.

6. Your parent regularly misses appointments and other important items: Forgetfulness, absentmindedness and memory issues may also show up when it comes to keeping certain appointments, recognizing key dates, or, even more importantly, maintaining medication dosages on schedule.

7. Behaving Srangely: Between aging, mental degradation and the side effects from medication, your parent has lost their personalities and behavior has taken an odd turn for the worse. If you see signs of paranoia, fear, strange phone calls and conversations and nervousness, it’s a sign that living assistance is in order.

8. They exhibit signs of depression: A loss of interest in caring for one’s self as well as a lack of participation in socialization and in once-loved hobbies can mean that your parent needs treatment or should reside in an environment where they can be around other people.

The New Year means new starts, and that typically involves making New Year's resolutions.

While the old-faithful standbys still exist, adults over the age of 65 can greatly benefit from making healthy resolutions – especially those that help prevent illness and injury.

Here are five New Year's resolutions that will keep you feeling young and vibrant.

Participate in cognitive health activities Mental health is an important aspect of health that we tend to overlook as we extol the benefits of staying physically fit. Keep your mind engaged and stimulated through a language class, book club or by playing brain games and trivia on the computer.

Exercise or start a new physical activity Older adults are increasingly looking to classes such as yoga and tai chi to not only increase physical health, but to meet people and widen their social circles. Other activities like local walking clubs can be found at many senior organizations and community centers.

Eat more fresh foods Processed foods are easy to throw together for a meal, but they come with a host of health issues and concerns, and frankly, they're not worth the hassle.

Make a promise to eat more fresh, healthy fruits and vegetables and you'll see a noticeable difference in the way you look and feel – and it takes very little work on your end.

Make your home safer According to the Centers for Disease Control, one in three adults over the age of 65 falls each year.

Tips like moving cords out of walkways, having good lighting near beds and taping down edges of carpet and rugs can help tremendously to decrease the number and severity of falls.

Schedule regular checkups Unfortunately, with age comes an increased risk of illness and other complications such as high blood pressure, osteoporosis and other medical conditions. Making sure that you schedule a regular annual checkup can help in early detection and prevention.

Phelps Memorial Hospital Center achieves NICHE “Exemplar” status for its efforts to improve care for older adult patients

Phelps Memorial Hospital Center announces it has achieved "Exemplar" status for its NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders) program. NICHE is designed to help nurses provide specialized care to patients age 65 and older. The "Exemplar" status recognizes Phelps’ ongoing, high-level dedication to providing the highest quality, most appropriate care to older adults. Phelps is one of only 10 hospitals in New York State to achieve this status.

The highest of four possible program levels, the Exemplar status was attained following a rigorous evaluation of the hospital’s current NICHE program and its future goals for the program. The requirements include implementing the NICHE Geriatric Resource Nurse (GRN) model and evidence-based protocols on all applicable hospital units, including specialty units; applying aging-sensitive policies; incorporating input from patients, families and other healthcare providers in the development and execution of NICHE initiatives; and assuming regional and national leadership roles.

“The NICHE designation and the ‘Exemplar’ status signal our resolve to provide high-quality, patient-centered care for older adults,” said Cheryl Burke, MS, MBA, RN-BC, WCC, NICHE coordinator at Phelps. “Through our participation in the NICHE program, we are able to offer approaches that promote better outcomes, positive experiences, and improved care for our older patients. This leads to greater satisfaction rates for our patients, their families and our staff.”

Astorino announces 2015 Senior Hall of Fame Inductees

“The Senior Hall of Fame is a Westchester tradition that recognizes seniors who have generously given their time and talent to improve their home communities and the county at large,” Astorino said. “Their leadership has enhanced our quality of life, and we are fortunate to call them our friends and neighbors.”

“This is especially true for this year's top honoree, Mayor Delfino,” Astorino added. “As a public servant for more than 30 years, he accomplished much for the people of Westchester County – including the revitalization of downtown White Plains. But more than that, he would never shy away from personally helping anyone. He showed respect and concern for all, and we are so pleased to recognize him with this award.”

Four seniors will also receive Special Recognition this year: Mr. Thomas Basher, Tarrytown; Ms. Jo Falcone, White Plains; Mr. John Howard, Mount Vernon; and Ms. Pearl Quarles, New Rochelle. Three seniors in the “Class of 2015” are 90 years old or older, and their ranks also include one married couple.

The Senior Hall of Fame is sponsored and presented by the

Westchester County Department of Seniors Programs and Services (DSPS); the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation; and the Westchester Public/Private Partnership for Aging Services. United Hebrew of New Rochelle has also joined as sponsor.

DSPS Commissioner Mae Carpenter said the achievements of the Hall of Fame honorees show the importance of people giving back to their communities and to each other.

“The honorees show that age is never a deterrent to being a vital member of our society,” she said. “In fact, it’s an advantage because of the life experiences they bring with them. Their generous contributions have helped to make Westchester one of the most senior-friendly places in the world.”

The Senior Hall of Fame began in 1983, which was also the 300th anniversary of Westchester County's founding.

Its purpose was to showcase how seniors contributed to building the county, and more than 1,100 seniors have since been inducted.
