The age-old tradition of passing down stories and family experience is a great way to help young people get connected to the important history that precedes them. Coordinate a family project where young family members interview grandparents and older relatives. They could write down the stories they learned, draw pictures, make collages, or compose poems, songs or skits on their conversations with older adults. This month we are trying to hit the outdoor concert circuit, do some yoga on the beach and maybe on a paddleboard, find the best open air markets and just generally soak up the last days of summer.

World Alzheimer's Month is the international campaign every September to raise awareness and challenge the stigma that surrounds dementia.

World Alzheimer's Month was launched in 2012. World Alzheimer's Day is on 21 September each year.

2 out of every 3 people globally believe there is little or no understanding of dementia in their countries. The impact of World Alzheimer's Month is growing, but the stigmatisation and misinformation that surrounds dementia remains a global problem that requires global action.

September 2017 will mark the 6th global World Alzheimer's Month, and will utilize the theme of 'Remember me' to highlight the importance of early detection and diagnosis of dementia.

Seniors are often vulnerable to con artists who call them and try all sorts of tricks to steal their money. Never – never, ever – give anyone your personal information, such as your credit card number unless you initiated the call, perhaps to your bank or to a catalog company. The best way to protect yourself: hang up the phone.

But if you suspect you received a fraudulent call, notify the county’s Department of Consumer Protection right away at (914) 995-2167.

People who lead senior groups should be aware of Westchester County’s Senior Crime Busters initiative and request a presentation for their group about how to prevent scams and other important issues.

Speakers who will come to your group include members of the county’s public safety and consumer protection departments as well as from the offices of the attorney general and the county district attorney.

Health Care/Medicare/Health Insurance Fraud Every U.S. citizen or permanent resident over age 65 qualifies for Medicare, so there is rarely any need for anyone to research what private health insurance company older people have. In these types of scams, perpetrators pose as Medicare representatives and trick seniors into providing personal information to them. Scam artists use the personal information they collect to set up false identities (ID Theft) and to also bill Medicare for fake treatments and services that are never provided.

The Pigeon Drop The con artist tells the individual that he/she has found a large sum of money and is willing to split it, if the Senior will make a “good faith”

payment to the con artist by withdrawing funds from his/her bank account. Often, a second con artist is involved, posing as a lawyer, banker, or some other trustworthy stranger.

The Relative or Grandchild Scam The con artist gets the victim to wire or send money on the pretext that the senior’s child, or grandchild or another relative is in jail or in the hospital and needs the money.

The Medical Alert Scam This scam seems to work through robo-calls where con artists tell seniors that they have been “approved” for medical alert equipment at no charge. They identify the business as “Senior Medical Alert” or “Senior Medical Advisors.” The con artists will then ask the seniors for their credit card numbers and use it to bill them every month for “monitoring services” they never receive. They also use scare tactics to induce consumers to respond to the offer warning of a “significant rise” in the number of senior citizens who delayed and as a result suffered death or serious life-threatening injuries.

Electric Service Companies Con Edison continues to deliver electricity to homes and apartments but because of deregulation, other socalled “energy service companies” can provide the power. Be wary of callers who quickly try to get you to switch providers.

Magazine Sales and Lottery Scams Magazine sales are offered with the proceeds going to fake charities.

Lottery “Winners” can collect winning lottery amounts by first sending a finder’s fee.

In addition, the Department of Consumer Protection describes other scams you should know about, particularly foreclosure scams, moving company scams and phishing scams.

Monthly Tips for Seniors 5 Autumn Safety Tips for Seniors

As autumn leaves start to fall and the air turns crisp, older adults face seasonal challenges to their health. The cold and flu season is just getting started, and there are other cold-weather threats to a senior’s health and safety that can be minimized by following a few basic guidelines.

Get the flu vaccine. Seniors are especially at risk for complications from the flu, such as pneumonia, bronchitis and ear infections. The flu can also make any chronic health problems worse.

There are two types of flu shots specially designed for seniors.

Ask your health care provider which one would be best for you.

Be wary of tripping hazards.

People generally experience stiffer joints in colder weather.

Not only might it be a bit harder to move around, but it gets dark out early, the ground is often wet and fallen leaves create slipping hazards. Make sure leaves are cleared from sidewalks and driveways on your property and that all walkways are illuminated to reduce your chances of a fall.

Stay warm. As you get older, your risk of suffering hypothermia goes up. Dress in layered, loose-fitting clothing. Dress warmly and wear a hat when going outside. Keep your indoor temperature at a minimum of 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

Protect your skin. Indoor air becomes arid thanks to household heating systems. With age, our skin gets thinner and more prone to dryness and tears that can lead to infections. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids and eating soup. Using a humidifier indoors can go a long way toward putting some much-needed moisture back into the air. Also, make sure to help keep your skin from drying out with lotion or cream.

Eliminate fire risks. Check that electrical appliances like electrical blankets are in good condition without fraying cords. Space heaters are common sources of fires. Make sure they’re placed far away from flammable surfaces. Autumn is an excellent time to check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Also, be sure to have working fire extinguishers in the kitchen and near any fireplaces.

Learning a new skill can slow cognitive aging

Active aging involves more than moving your body. You also need to move your brain.

“When you exercise, you engage your muscles to help improve overall health,” says Dr. Ipsit Vahia, director of geriatric outpatient services for Harvard-affiliated McLean Hospital. “The same concept applies to the brain. You need to exercise it with new challenges to keep it healthy.”

A fun way to do this is to sharpen your No. 2 pencils and go back to school. “New brain cell growth can happen even late into adulthood,” says Dr. Vahia. “The process of learning and acquiring new information and experiences, like through structured classes, can stimulate that process.”

“The focus is not to earn a degree, or even take multiple classes, but to focus on a class to keep mental activity thriving,” says Dr. Vahia.

It does not have to be a traditional academic course either, he adds. “It can be about learning new skills, like speaking a foreign language, learning how to paint, or to play a musical instrument. You can even study how to improve current ones like fixing a car or becoming more computer-savvy.”

On a personal level, classes also keep your social skills sharp as well as boost self-confidence.

“It is easy to become more socially isolated as people grow older,” says Dr. Vahia. “A class makes you interact and communicate with other people on a regular basis through group participation, conversations, and discussions.”

Time to enroll

Before you sign up for your first class, here are some guidelines to consider:

• Choose a subject you enjoy or are curious about. Astronomy? Civil War history?

English literature? “Your choices are no longer dictated by the requirements to get a good grade and complete a degree, so you are free to pursue topics that spark your interest,” says Dr. Vahia. “What are you interested in now, or wish you had explored at an earlier time?”

• Not interested in traditional subject classes? Focus on one with a self-improvement angle, like public speaking or creative writing.

• Begin with a weekly class, so you can ease into the environment and not feel overwhelmed.

• If you do not feel ready for a classroom setting, take an online class. “But make sure it offers some level of interaction with classmates through discussion boards,” says Dr. Vahia.

• If your class does not meet your expectations, do not give up. Try a different type of class, format, or even instructor.
