Advancing age puts many seniors at risk for a number of oral health problems, such as: Darkened teeth. Caused, to some extent, by changes in dentin -- the bone-like tissue that underlies the tooth enamel -- and by a lifetime of consuming stain-causing foods and beverages.

Also caused by thinning of the outer enamel layer that lets the darker yellower dentin show through.

Dry mouth. Dry mouth is caused by reduced saliva flow, which can be a result of cancer treatments that use radiation to the head and neck area, as well as certain diseases, such as Sjögren's syndrome, and medication side effects. Many medicines can cause dry mouth.

Diminished sense of taste. While advancing age impairs the sense of taste, diseases, medications, and dentures can also contribute to this sensory loss.

Root decay. This is caused by exposure of the tooth root to decay-causing acids. The tooth roots become exposed as gum tissue recedes from the tooth. Roots do not have any enamel to protect them and are more prone to decay than the crown part of the tooth.

Gum disease. Caused by plaque and made worse by food left in teeth, use of tobacco products, poor-fitting bridges and dentures, poor diets, and certain diseases, such as anemia, cancer, and diabetes, this is often a problem for older adults.

Tooth loss. Gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss.

Uneven jawbone. This is caused by tooth and then not replacing missing teeth. This allows the rest of the teeth to drift and shift into open spaces

Denture-induced stomatitis. Ill-fitting dentures, poor dental hygiene, or a buildup of the fungus Candida albicans cause this condition, which is inflammation of the tissue underlying a denture.

Thrush. Diseases or drugs that affect the immune system can trigger the overgrowth of the fungus Candida albicans in the mouth.

Age in and of itself is not a dominant or sole factor in determining oral health. However, certain medical conditions, such as arthritis in the hands and fingers, may make brushing or flossing teeth difficult to impossible to perform. It is important to know that many medicines do not mix well with alcohol. As you grow older, your body may react differently to alcohol, as well as to the mix of alcohol and medicines. Keep in mind that some problems you might think are medicine-related, such as loss of coordination, memory loss, or irritability, could be the result of a mix between your medicine and alcohol.

As you get older you may be faced with more health conditions that you need to treat on a regular basis. It is important to be aware that more use of medicines and normal body changes caused by aging can increase the chance of unwanted or maybe even harmful drug interactions. The more you know about your medicines and the more you talk with your health care professionals, the easier it is to avoid problems with medicines.

Drug Interactions • Drug-drug interactions happen when two or more medicines react with each other to cause unwanted effects. This kind of interaction can also cause one medicine to not work as well or even make one medicine stronger than it should be. For example, you should not take aspirin if you are taking a prescription blood thinner, such as warfarin, unless your health care professional tells you to.

• Drug-condition interactions happen when a medical condition you already have makes certain drugs potentially harmful. For example, if you have high blood pressure or asthma, you could have an unwanted reaction if you take a nasal decongestant.

• Drug-food interactions result from drugs reacting with foods or drinks. In some cases, food in the digestive tract can affect how a drug is absorbed. Some medicines also may affect the way nutrients are absorbed or used in the body.

• Drug-alcohol interactions can happen when the medicine you take reacts with an alcoholic drink. For instance, mixing alcohol with some medicines may cause you to feel tired and slow your reactions.

What Are Side Effects?

Side effects are unplanned symptoms or feelings you have when taking a medicine. Most side effects are not serious and go away on their own; others can be more bothersome and even serious.

To help prevent possible problems with medicines, seniors must know about the medicine they take and how it makes them feel.

Keep track of side effects to help your doctor know how your body is responding to a medicine.

Falls – After a hospital stay, many are weak and more prone to falling. Failing to have therapy after hospitalization could potentially lead to a re-hospitalization due to an injury from a fall.

Infections- Without active movement because of weakness that could have been improved with physical therapy, there is an increased risk for pneumonia. There is also increased potential for skin problems, such as ulcers, which may develop because of lack of movement.

It is important to go to all your medical appointments and to talk to your team of health care professionals (doctors, pharmacists, nurses, or physician assistants) about your medical conditions, the medicines you take, and any health concerns you have. It may help to make a list of comments, questions, or concerns before your visit or call to a health care professional. Also, think about having a close friend or relative come to your appointment with you if you would like someone to help you understand and remember answers to your questions. Here are some other things to keep in mind: All medicines count. Tell your team of health care professionals about all the medicines you take, including prescription and overthe-counter (OTC) medicines, such as pain relievers, antacids, cold medicines, and laxatives.

Don't forget to include eye drops, dietary supplements, vitamins, herbals, and topical medicines, such as creams and ointments.

Eating habits. If you follow or have recently changed to a special diet (a very low-fat diet, for instance, or a high-calcium diet), talk to your doctor about this. Tell your doctor about how much coffee, tea, or alcohol you drink each day and whether you smoke. These things may make a difference in the way your medicine works.

Your lifestyle. If you want to make your medicine schedule more simple, talk about it with your doctor.

He or she may have another medicine or other ideas.

Keep in touch with your doctors. If you regularly take a prescription medicine, ask your doctor to check how well it is working. Check to see whether you still need to take it and, if so, whether there is anything you can do to cut back. Don't stop taking the medicine on your own without first talking with your doctor.

Medical history. Tell your health care professional about your medical history. The doctor will want to know whether you have any food, medicine, or other allergies.

When it’s time to bring in help, you might find yourself surprised if your elderly loved one isn’t as on board as you would have liked. There are lots of reasons your loved one might not like the idea, but you can help her to change her mind.

Broach the Topic Gently If you already know that your elderly loved one is resistant to the idea of having home care providers around, it’s a good idea to broach the topic as gently as you can. You want to offer your loved one a choice, but ultimately if you need help, this is a solid option. Try offering your loved one the choice of days that the elderly care provider comes by, for example. This is especially effective if you can be flexible about timing.

Call the Home Care Provider by a Different Title For some loved ones, simply hearing the phrase “elderly care provider” is frustrating and implies that they can no longer care for themselves.

Whether this is the case or not is a moot point, of course, but you do still need to consider your loved one’s feelings on the matter. Try calling the care provider your assistant or use another term that your loved one prefers.

Make the New Assistant’s Arrival about You Another tactic that can help in this situation is if you make the arrival of your new “assistant” about you. That means that you let your loved one know that you’re the one who needs help, no matter what the situation actually is. In essence, this isn’t a lie because the elderly care provider is there to offer help to both you and your loved one.

Make Sure Everyone Gets Along Every new situation means that the people involved need to get to know each other and get along fairly well. This takes a little bit of time, so it may take a few visits before your loved one has warmed up a bit. Keep your finger on the temperature of the situation and make changes if necessary.

Start out Slowly By starting out slowly with fewer, shorter visits at first, you can help your loved one to realize that her elderly care provider is there to help her. As the situation warms up, you can increase the time that you’re away and the frequency with which your loved one’s home care providers stop by.

Hiring help can be a delicate proposition, but you can make the situation work for you and your loved one with some planning.

Home Instead Senior Care Network launches online service to help keep seniors safe

One of the worst scenarios for families caring for someone living with Alzheimer’s disease is a loved one wandering or getting lost. It causes immediate panic and concern, and unfortunately happens all too often. To help families keep their loved ones safe, the Home Instead Senior Care network has launched a free tool, the Missing Senior NetworkSM, now available in the New York city area.

Found at www.MissingSeniorNetwork.com, the platform enables family caregivers to alert a network of friends, family and businesses to be on the lookout for a missing senior.

The service provides a way to alert the network of a missing senior via text or email. Families can also choose to post an alert to the Home Instead Remember for Alzheimer’s Facebook page, connected to 270,000 followers.

“These frightening occurrences lead families to call our office and ask for help,” said Brian Trainor of the Home Instead Senior Care office serving Westchester and Putnam counties. “This resource was created to help tri-state area families understand the risk of wandering and have a tool that empowers them to quickly take action if a loved one living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia wanders.”

The Missing Senior Network is part of Home Instead Senior Care network’s new Prevent WanderingSM program, which includes resources such as insight into what may trigger wandering events, steps families can take to help keep their loved ones safe, and tips on what to do if a wandering event occurs.

Family caregivers should be aware of the following common triggers that may cause someone with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia to wander: Delusions or hallucinations.

Those living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia may misinterpret sights or sounds, causing them to feel fearful and wander to escape their environment.

Overstimulation. Individuals living with dementia can become easily upset in noisy or crowded environments, triggering them to look for an escape from the chaos.

Fatigue, especially during late afternoons and evenings. Individuals living with dementia may become tired, causing restless pacing and, eventually, wandering.

Disorientation to place and time. Individuals may not recognize they are home and seek to return to a familiar place, such as a former workplace.

Change in routine. Individuals living with dementia may become confused following a change of routine, wandering in an effort to return to a familiar place.

“We understand the topic of wandering is something many families coping with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia may avoid discussing,” said Jamie Lavin, owner of the Home Instead Senior Care serving central Suffolk County. “It’s important for families to understand the potential triggers for wandering and have a plan in place to help keep their loved ones safe.”

Tips for helping your elder avoid falls Boomers & Beyond - Westchester

Taking a tumble is no trivial matter for older adults, but falling is by no means an inevitable part of aging, according to Elizabeth Landsverk, MD, founder of ElderConsult Geriatric Medicine.

“At their worst, falls can cause hip fractures, broken bones and head injuries. But even when they don't injure people physically, falls can greatly affect an elder's quality of life,” she adds.

“Many older adults curtail their activities and social lives simply because they fear falling, which can lead to negative effects such as isolation and depression.”

Why do seniors fall?

According to the National Council on Aging, several common factors increase the risk of falling among older adults. They include: Balance and gait issues: With aging often comes a loss of coordination, balance and flexibility, making falls more likely.

Vision issues: Less light typically reaches the retina in older people, making it harder to see the things that might trip them.

Chronic health problems: With more than 9 in 10 seniors coping with at least one chronic medical condition such as foot pain, arthritis or diabetes - which can lead to pain, medication use, or inactivity - falls become more likely.

Medication use: Some drugs can trigger dizziness, dehydration or other side effects that can prompt falling.

Home environment: “Many seniors have lived in the same home for years and years, so they don’t think about simple changes they should make to keep it safer as they get older,” Dr. Landsverk says.

Fall prevention tactics Being aware of the risk factors for falling is a big step toward preventing falls from happening.

Ask if they're worried too: Some older adults seem oblivious to their heightened fall risk, but others are keenly aware of the dangers. Best to have a physical therapist evaluate each elder to create a safe and effective treatment plan.

Review their medications: With their doctor or pharmacist, have the elder review their use of over-the-counter and prescription drugs to determine if any may be causing dizziness or sleepiness, or combine to cause dangerous side effects affecting balance.

Make sure their eyes have been checked: An annual eye visit is optimal, and eyeglasses should be updated as needed.

Tweak their home environment: Hazards such as dim lighting, broken or uneven steps, clutter or throw rugs on the floor (which can slip), or a lack of handrails on the stairs or in bathrooms can add to the fall risk.

“The good news is that many falls can be prevented,” says Dr. Landsverk. “Helping your aging parent, grandparent or other loved one cut their falling risk ultimately helps them stay healthy and independent for as long as possible.”
