Wartburg hosted its historic Fall Festival on Saturday, September 24th from 11 am to 5 pm on Wartburg’s Mt. Vernon campus at One Wartburg Place. This is the third year of the Festival, which was held annually for decades up until the early 2000s and has recently been revived.

With a robust intergenerational schedule that included live entertainment, a children’s area – Sponsored by The Future Society, Inc. – with a bouncy castle, an assortment of food trucks and a Farmer’s Market sponsored by Morrison Community Living, and an art exhibition, attendees spent the entire day entertained and engaged as they support one of Westchester’s most special resources. There were also raffles, interactive activities, and an information table to learn more about Wartburg’s history and unique services.

To celebrate Wartburg’s beginnings in 1866 as The Wartburg Orphans’ Farm School, there was also a reunion for those who once called the farm school home. This event was free and open to the public.

Waveny LifeCare Network’s 2016 Walk to End Alzheimer’s team, the “Waveny Walkers,” raised essential funds for the Alzheimer’s Association that will be used for care and support services for people with Alzheimer’s disease.

Waveny LifeCare Network staff, volunteers and family members helped fight Alzheimer’s disease by walking and raising funds for this year’s annual “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” at Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk on Sunday, September 18th.

Held annually at more than 600 sites nationwide, the Association’s Walk is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.

Waveny’s team has participated in the three-mile walk since its inception 20 years ago. Funds raised through donations and sponsorships support the Alzheimer’s Association Connecticut

Chapter, and stay in the community to fund essential care and support services for people with Alzheimer’s.

Waveny’s team is especially passionate about this mission given the dedicated, therapeutic care Waveny provides to patients, residents and participants with Alzheimer’s disease at Waveny Care Center, The Village – Waveny’s innovative assisted living residence 100% dedicated to memory care, and in Waveny’s Adult Day Program.

Waveny LifeCare Network provides a comprehensive continuum of healthcare to serve the changing needs of older adults from all areas. Waveny is a non-

profit organization that offers independent living at The Inn, assisted living and respite care for people with memory impairment at The Village, and skilled nursing, inpatient and outpatient Rehabilitation Services at Waveny Care Center. It also includes the Brown Geriatric Evaluation Clinic, an Adult Day Program that provides free door-to-door transportation throughout most of lower Fairfield County, and an array of community-based services through Waveny Home Healthcare, Waveny at Home and Geriatric Care Management. Westchester Walk to End Alzheimer’s draws nearly 1,500 Nearly 1,500 people gathered on Sunday, Sept. 25, at White Plains High School at 550 North St., for the Westchester Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

The walk was the first of five scheduled around the Hudson Valley this fall. The others are set for Saturday, Oct. 8, in Montgomery; Sunday, Oct. 9, in Pomona; Saturday, Oct. 15, on the Highland side of the Walkway Over the Hudson and Sunday, Oct. 16, in Carmel.

Altogether, the five Hudson Valley walks are expected to raise more than $1 million to help support families living with Alzheimer’s disease and research to find a cure.

Since 1989, the Alzheimer’s Association has mobilized millions of Americans in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease through its walks.

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research programs.

Last year, the Walk to End Alzheimer’s raised more than $77 million nationwide for care, support and research efforts for those affected by Alzheimer’s.

Registration for all the upcoming Walks to End Alzheimer’s will start at 9 a.m. with opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. followed by the walks at 10:30.

Celebrate Aging: The Livable Communities Village Fair

Westchester County Senior Program and Services had a free event for seniors and their families: the fourth Annual Celebrate Aging Livable Communities Village Fair on Wednesday, September 14th.

“The event is upbeat and showcase some of the best programming Westchester has to offer,” Astorino said.

The Celebrate Aging Village Fair took place from 10.00 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday September, 14 at the Mount Pleasant Community Center, 125 Lozza Drive in Valhalla with exciting activities, lively discussion and interactive learning inspired community partners from across Westchester County.

During November the home care and hospice community honor the millions of nurses, home care aides, therapists, and social workers who make a remarkable difference for the patients and families they serve. These heroic caregivers play a central role in our health care system and in homes across the nation. To recognize their efforts, we call upon all Americans to commemorate the power of caring, both at the home and in their local communities and join with the National Association for Home Care & Hospice (NAHC) by celebrating November as Home Care and Hospice Month.

NAHC honors National Home Care and Hospice Month with the theme Home Care and Hospice Deliver Freedom, in the coming weeks NAHC is releasing new studies showing the increasing role of home care and hospice in health care. Whether it is dollars spent or miles driven, the value of home care and hospice is imeasurable.

Home Care Aide Week takes place this year on November 13-19. For over 15 years, NAHC has used the second full week in November to highlight the many aides whose contributions are second to none as they bring personal

warmth to the daily work of giving personal care. They play an invaluable role for their patients as caregivers, companions, and friends.

November is the perfect time to connect with your elected officials. Scheduling a meeting with your elected officials is one of the best ways to be a home health advocate, while also building positive relationships with your lawmakers. Face-to-face meetings give you the opportunity to ask lawmakers to support home care and hospice in person, and from the perspective of the community that they represent. It is particularly important that we communicate NAHC’s priority issues.

“It is highly appropriate in November that we celebrate the nurses, therapists, aides, and other providers who choose to use their lives to serve our country’s aged, disabled, and dying,” said Val J. November is Bladder Health Month

The bladder is an amazing organ with a very special design. November is recognized as National Bladder Health Month and expert urologists at The Urology Center of Colorado (TUCC) have put together a list of bladder health facts all Coloradans should be aware of.

Certain diseases or changes in the body can impact the storage capacity and function of the bladder. For example, the lower urinary tract

consists of the bladder and the urethra. Symptoms associated with lower urinary tract conditions are referred to as lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). These symptoms include urinary frequency, urgency, hesitancy, dysuria, slow stream and nocturia.

More than 70,000 Americans will be diagnosed with bladder cancer this year, making it the fifth most commonly diagnosed cancer in the country.

Smoking is the leading cause of bladder cancer. Smokers are twice as likely to be diagnosed with bladder cancer as those who have never picked up a cigarette.

While more men are diagnosed with bladder cancer than women, the rate of incidence among women is increasing. Women also tend to present with more advanced bladder cancer tumors when diagnosed.

There have been many treatment advances for bladder cancer in recent years. A cystectomy, the surgical removal of the bladder, is one treatment option for bladder cancer patients. In 2010, surgeons at TUCC performed the first robotic cystectomy in Denver.

Other treatment options for bladder cancer may include radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy or other scope-based surgical procedures.

Urinary frequency and urgency, with or without incontinence, also known as overactive bladder and urge incontinence, is the most common bladder condition afflicting women. This condition is often caused by bladder muscle spasms,

which result in an urgent need to go to the bathroom and may be followed by an involuntary loss of urine. There are many effective treatment options available for overactive bladder from lifestyle changes (fluid management) and muscle training to medications or surgery.

Interstitial cystitis is a chronic bladder condition caused by damage to the protective lining of the bladder. Patients experience symptoms of urinary frequency, urinary urgency or pain in the areas between the navel and the inside of the thighs that can be mild or severe and occasional or constant. Approximately 90 percent of patients diagnosed with interstitial cystitis are women.

Childbirth is the most common risk factor for developing pelvic organ prolapse, the loosening and potential slipping of the pelvic organs from their normal anatomical position.

Westchester Medical Center Trauma Expert advises The Bristal Seniors on how to prevent falls Boomers & Beyond - Westchester

In an effort to keep older adults healthy and living longer, The Westchester Medical Center Health Network is educating seniors during National Fall Prevention Month on how to help prevent these accidents.

On September 13, Mary McCarthy, Trauma Injury Prevention Coordinator at Westchester Medical Center, led a program at The Bristal Assisted Living at Armonk to show older adults how to prevent injury by improving coordination and balance.McCarthy also gave The Bristal residents practical advice on how to avoid injury. “I’m here today to keep you out of the hospital,” McCarthy told the group of more than 30 residents and staff from The Bristal who attended the hour-long program.

One in three adults age 65 and older sustain injuries - some of them fatal - as the result of a fall. About 25 percent of hospital admissions and 40 percent of nursing home admissions are due to falls, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Kathy Aronow, RN, MSN, Adult Trauma Program Manager for the Westchester Medical Center Health Network who also attended the presentation at The Bristal, said that the ini-

tiative was part of a comprehensive balance-training and fall-prevention program presented by WMCHealth.

By providing fall and risk assessments, WMCHealth helps older adults recognize the medical, behavioral and environmental factors - such as medications, vision, hearing, balance, diet, exercise and home environment that increase the likelihood of falling.

“I hear from older adults all the time that they expect to fall because they are old,’’ said McCarthy. “Our seniors need to better understand that falls are not a natural part of aging, they are predictable and preventable.’’

McCarthy and Aronow said fall and risk assessments are being conducted at facilities throughout the WMC Health Network and are being offered in the community. WMCHealth partnered with the YWCA of White Plains and Central Westchester earlier this year to launch a comprehensive balance and training program.

Samantha Krieger, Executive Director of The Bristal at Armonk, said that the program brought some valuable information to residents on how to stay healthy and active. “Programs like these not only help older adults live

longer, but improve the quality of lives, which is what we strive for at The Bristal, ’’ she said. “We appreciate WMCHealth Network’s outreach to our residents.’’ The Bristal residents attending the program were provided with packets containing information on how to prevent falls,

medication review, home safety checklist, tips for overcoming fear of falling, exercises to help build better balance to reduce falls and useful techniques if you fall.
