6 ways to make the Holidays special for Home Care clients

The holidays are upon us, and as the saying goes, “Tis the season to be jolly.” Unfortunately for many seniors, that sentiment isn’t always true. While the holidays bring joy to many older adults, they can also be a time of loneliness and depression for others. Luckily as home care providers, who have frequent contact with seniors, you have the unique opportunity to make the season a little more merry and bright for your clients. These six ideas for you and your caregivers are simple ways to fill your clients’ holiday with a little more cheer: 1. Decorations Holiday decorations can help a home feel warm and festive. They can also help seniors to recall happy memories from years past and provide them with an opportunity to share those experiences.

Decorating is a very social and active event, and it can become a fun occasion for seniors to chat and move around their home transforming it into a bright new space.

2. Visits and Calls Contact with family and friends can transform a lonely holiday into a joyful one. Work with family members to coordinate a visit, or prepare the house to welcome those who are planning on coming. If family and friends live too far away for a visit, it’s a great idea to set up a call or Skype visit with one or more of them.

3. Cooking a Holiday Dish Food and the holidays go hand in hand, and the method and activity involved in cooking can help seniors to interact more with their caregivers and to get up and moving. Ask clients about their favorite holiday dishes or treats and help them to make and share it. It may be as simple as a cup of tea or cocoa, but regardless of the simplicity, cooking is a great way to connect more with clients and help them to enjoy the holiday.

4. Small Gifts and Holiday Cards Whether it’s a small treat, a flower, or a simple holiday card, a gift can serve as a physical token of your appreciation. Sending a gift or a sincere note not only shows your clients that you value them, but it can also boost the spirits of seniors who may not receive many other gifts this year.

5. Social Events While your agency may not frequently hold events or activities for clients, you may want to make an exception for the holidays, by holding a small social with cocoa or cookies for your clients. It can act both as a thank you and as an opportunity for clients to meet with other local seniors in similar situations. If you don’t want to plan an event yourself, you may consider researching local events for seniors and encourage your caregivers to take their clients out to attend and enjoy themselves.

6. Maintain Traditions To the degree that your caregivers are comfortable with it, help your clients to maintain their holiday traditions. That may mean playing holiday music around the house, setting up a tree, or attending a place of worship. Perhaps the caregiver could help the client to write and send Christmas cards or to wrap gifts for family members. Assisting with these activities is a great way to help seniors to hold on to bond with their caregivers and to keep their special traditions alive.

As you care for seniors this holiday season, spread some holiday cheer by taking the time to do the small things that help them to feel cared for and appreciated.

It is hard to believe that it is December already; a time when we all celebrate in some form, take stock of the year that is ending and prepare for the next. It is a good time to assess our health and wellness needs for 2018. It is critical if you rely on the Affordable Care Act medical insurance that you sign up in 2017 for 2018 by December 15th. This is a shorter sign up window than last year. It is also a good time to get all of your medical visits completed and get your flu shot.

At this time, we are reminded to acknowledge and appreciate those who care for us and our loved ones. Many give up their own family time to be with ours. Consider celebrating with them and their families, sharing the bounty of the season with those in need, alone or infirmed.

for managing the holidays with aging parents

The holidays mean different things to different people, but for most of us, they are very much about family. We’re likely to see our aging parents and relatives over the holidays, and if they are lonely, or beginning to have trouble living independently, the holidays can be a difficult and stressful time. If we approach this time with our parents with both a positive and proactive attitude, we can make our visit joyful for all.

The CHEER plan stands for: • Check • Help • Empower • Enjoy • Reminisce

It is a plan that can help you make the most of your time with aging parents and loved ones over the holidays.

1. CHECK on your older loved one’s well-being.

If you’re visiting your parents in their home, check their refrigerator and pantry to make sure they’re eating fresh, healthy food. Survey the overall safety of their home, assuring that smoke and carbon monoxide alarms have batteries, and that the rooms don’t have fall hazards. If you don’t visit their home, watch for health issues involving chewing and swallowing, mobility and gait, mental clarity and vision.

2. HELP your loved ones stay engaged.

Seniors who live alone can suffer from depression due to limited mobility in the winter months. Be inclusive and invite older relatives and family friends to your celebration, offering transportation if they need it. Older loved ones may need emotional support during this time.

Make sure they are comfortable and not overburdened with preparations. If an older loved one seems lonely, take time to listen. Are they missing family members who have passed away or the way things used to be at holidays of the past?

3. EMPOWER your loved one to live independently.

While helping is important, it’s also important that our older loved ones have the knowledge, support and tools needed to live independently when our visit is over. If you are concerned about your loved one’s safety, teach them skills that help to compensate for deficits. Also make sure there is a local support system for your loved one, and set them up with resources to help them stay safe at home, such as meal delivery services, mobility devices and medical alarms.

4. ENJOY your time together.

After you have ensured that your older loved ones are safe and happy, relax and focus on making the most of the holidays and your time together.

Encourage group activities to get your family moving; dance to some favorite tunes or take an evening stroll through the neighborhood to see the lights.

By all means be merry, but be mindful that alcohol may dangerously interact with medications.

5. REMINISCE with loved ones.

Many of our fondest memories from childhood and youth are episodes from holidays past. Allow older loved ones to get nostalgic and reminisce over the holidays and about the holidays. Even seniors with advanced memory loss retain long-term memories, and may be able to speak vividly about a Christmas more than 50 years ago. Get out photo albums, family videos and holiday music that bring the past to life for elderly people.

Waveny LifeCare Network’s 2017 Walk to End Alzheimer’s team, the “Waveny Walkers,” raised essential funds for the Alzheimer’s Association that will be used for care and support services for people with Alzheimer’s disease.

Waveny LifeCare Network employees, volunteers and family members helped fight Alzheimer’s disease by participating in this year’s annual “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” at Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk on Sunday, October 8.

Held annually at more than 600 sites nationwide, the Association’s Walk is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.

Waveny’s team has participated in the three-mile walk since its inception 21 years ago. Funds raised through donations and sponsorships support the Alzheimer’s Association Connecticut Chapter, and stay in the community to fund essential care and support services for people with Alzheimer’s.

“It was a rainy day, but the weather didn’t matter to anyone who came to support the cause,” said Rachel Brunetti, LMSW, Waveny’s Director of Social Services who served as the team’s

captain for the first time this year.

“I think I was most impressed by the camaraderie among everyone who participated. There was a genuine sense of unity in coming together to share in such an important effort. We were united in enthusiasm and joy, but also in quiet moments of silence and reflection. It was a deeply moving experience.”

The Waveny team joined scores of walkers from throughout Fairfield County at Calf Pasture Beach in support of medical research to improve treatments and find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. FSW Golf and Tennis Outing nets over $75K for My Second Home Program A day of golf and tennis at Mt. Kisco Country Club on October 10th generated over $75K to benefit My Second Home (MSH), an award-winning intergenerational adult social day program operated by Family Services of Westchester (FSW). The inaugural event featured a scramble format for golfers along with sets of tennis and concluded with an inspiring dinner presentation

by Alzheimer’s advocate Holly Rochell (Heston), the daughter of Academy-award winning actor Charlton Heston.

FSW created MSH as a way to help cognitively and physically impaired older adults, including those with Alzheimer’s disease, stay in their homes while providing respite to their caregivers.

MSH is the only program in Westchester County to combine a traditional social-model adult day service with a pre-school program at the same site to provide daily interactions between children and seniors. At MSH, children and seniors come together at one site to participate in programs, share experiences, and benefit from one another, just as they would in a family setting. Research has shown that programs like these help participating seniors feel more involved in their community, less lonely, and more productive, while children in the program gain self-confidence, empathy, and sensitivity. At the same time, their caregivers gain

invaluable peace of mind. MSH, which also features door-to-door transportation, has two convenient locations at Radio Circle in Mt. Kisco and at FSW’s Center for All Ages on North Broadway in White Plains.

At the event, Rochell spoke eloquently about her commitment to programs like MSH as she shared her personal experience with her late father’s diagnosis of Alzheimer’s stating, “I understand the importance of quality care—for both seniors and their caregivers—and I want to call attention to programs like My Second Home that help maintain the dignity of seniors suffering cognitive losses while at the same time offering respite for their caregivers.”

The fundraiser honored local residents Peggy and Roger Froehlich, whose experience with MSH was chronicled in a video about the program.

In addition to Heston Rochell’s support, the golf and tennis outing also benefited from Outing Sponsor Bloomberg Philanthropies and Hole-inOne sponsor BMW of Mt. Kisco. Over 100 area businesses and individuals generously provided their financial support via tee sponsorships, auction items and donated services.

The great thing about Phelps Hospital’s Autumn Games for Seasoned Adults is that you can have as much, or as little, seasoning as you like.

Barbara Baric likes a little spice.

This is the second year that she and her husband, Bob, have participated in the day-long event, held at the Mount Pleasant Community Center and co-sponsored by the Town of Mt. Pleasant.

“You get to meet new people, play games, laugh, and do silly things,” remarks Baric, who gives her age as 70+. “Like you're young again!” She and Bob, residents of Valhalla, played bocce ball and tried pickle ball, a sport that was new to them.

They loved the challenge of the obstacle course. “At first, when you see the name Obstacle Course, you’re thinking it’s like the Olympics,” she explained. “Then you realize that it is actually a course of do-able, fun things, like walking around with an egg on a spoon.”

For people who want something a bit less physical, the Games include bingo and mah jong competitions, as well as puzzles, board games, and other activities that offer chances to socialize and connect with others.

Many older people are regular swimmers, so the pool was open for the entire day. Music lovers enjoyed a Name That Tune competition.

There were interesting volunteer opportunities available, as well.

Gloria Montenero, 89, of Greenberg, was assigned to the bocce ball courts.

As a girl growing up in an Italian family in the city, she often visited her grandfather to watch him and his friends play bocce on a public court in his neighborhood. She knows the rules and the scoring, so she was a natural to oversee the play. “To sit and do nothing is a waste of time,” she says. “I enjoy being active.” Gloria belongs to the Phelps Vitality Initiative, a health and wellness group for seniors run by program manager Ellen Woods, who also organizes the Autumn Games. Gloria is “very, very grateful to Phelps.” She takes advantage of the array of free health screenings, participates in a support group for people who have osteoporosis, and looks forward to the monthly meeting of the Breakfast Club, where members share a meal followed by a speaker and a light exercise program.

Last year, recalls Gloria, local high school girls volunteered at the Games and participants enjoyed chatting with them about their school and future career plans. The opportunities for interaction between generations was yet another feature of the unique experience that is the Autumn Games.

Barbara Baric summed up this year’s game day. “I think the Autumn Games are a terrific idea! My husband had fun too. We all laughed together.”

Healthy eating tips for elderly during the holidays December, 2017

Metabolism slows as we get older, which makes it more difficult to control weight gain. Excess weight increases our risk of high cholesterol, diabetes and other health-related problems.

It’s important for seniors to continue healthy eating habits during the holiday season. This doesn’t mean they can’t have the occasional treat, it just means they should use caution, such as switching to a smaller plate.

Here are a few healthy eating tips seniors can consider:

• Make substitutions – go low fat or fat free. Try whole-wheat rolls instead of white; try simple yams, instead of candied yams.

• Skip salt – extra salt can lead to high blood pressure.

• Pace yourself – eating too fast can lead to over-eating.

• Stick to dietary restrictions – going off a diet during the holidays could spell disaster.

• Drink water – during the holiday rush it is easy to get dehydrated.

• Walk – go for a walk after a meal. Sitting around can turn carbs into fat storage instead of energy.

Waveny LifeCare Network is pleased to exhibit the artwork of local mother and daughter artists, Roz Emmons and Lisa Thoren, and welcomed their original collection with a gallery opening. This joint exhibition features their paintings side by side, and is a balance of distinct but complementary styles.

As friends of Waveny, the mother-daughter duo shared their passion for art, and love of both color and design with the nonprofit eldercare organization’s residents, short-term rehab patients and Adult Day Program participants.

Mother, Roz, was a founder of the Darien Arts Center, and is a lifelong artist. Inspired by her mother, Lisa is a professional artist and a past president of the Darien Arts Center. Their poetic work has already brightened the lives of many, and may be viewed in the front lobby of Waveny’s main campus at 3 Farm Road in New Canaan throughout the end of January.

Family Services of Westchester (FSW), announces the appointment of Board member Nicholas Wolff to the 2017 class of Westchester County’s Senior Citizen Hall of Fame. In its 35th year, the Senior Citizen Hall of Fame recognizes community members that have exemplified the true spirit of service.

Wolff joined the FSW Board of Directors over 10 years ago, after spending many years as a volunteer for programs designed to help children and the elderly. He enjoys reading to the children involved in Head Start and drives seniors to appointments through Ride Connect. As a board member, he counsels the organization on business matters and helps to raise funds. In addition to his activities with FSW, Wolff is a past President of the Rotary Club of White Plains and has served as a member of the board for the White Plains Child Day Care Center, United Way, the White Plains Library Association and Friends of the White Plains Public Schools.

“Nicholas truly embodies the word ‘service’,” stated Lisa Copeland, FSW Board Chairwoman.

“He has given so much to the residents of Westchester, through his career and his volunteer work.

His commitment to our county and to the individuals and families served at FSW is admirable.”

Born is White Plains, Wolff attended White Plains High School. After attending Monmouth College, he joined the real estate firm founded by his grandmother and father in 1933, F. Richard Wolff & Son, Inc. Currently he is a realtor at Better Homes and Gardens Rand Realty. Mr. Wolff has also served on the Westchester County Board of Realtors in a variety of leadership positions, and he has conducted courses in real estate. He and his wife, Aileen, have four children and three grandchildren.

Wayne, FSW President and CEO. “He joined FSW because he wanted to serve an organization that reaches as many people as possible and his enthusiasm for his many roles within our 50+ programs is genuine – we are so lucky to have his contributions!”

Wolff was selected by a panel of judges appointed by Westchester County’s Department of Senior Programs and Services. He will join 69 other seniors and County Executive Robert P. Astorino at an induction ceremony scheduled for December 1 at the Westchester Marriott Hotel in Tarrytown.
