Dr. Pasquale Fonzetti appointed Director of Burke Rehabilitation Hospital’s Memory Evaluation and Treatment Service Program PAGE 4

Pasquale Fonzetti, M.D., Ph.D., has been appointed director of the Memory Evaluation and Treatment Service (METS), a program that provides comprehensive outpatient assessment and treatment of memory disorders, at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains, NY. Dr. Fonzetti, a board-certified neurologist, had been the associate director of the program for 15 years and also serves as a staff neurologist at Burke. Through METS, Dr. Fonzetti works with patients to evaluate memory problems, providing diagnosis and treatment options for a wide-range of dementia disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease.

The program, which was established in 1979, offers patients services such as a preevaluation and screening, neurological exam, CT, MRI and other diagnostic neurological imaging, a neuropsychological evaluation of cognitive function, behavioral evaluation and management, caregiver assessment and more.

In addition, the METS program is dedicated to working closely with the patient and their family, providing a family conference to discuss diagnosis and treatment options after the evaluation.

Dr. Fonzetti earned his doctorate in biological science and his medical degree from Bari University in Italy. He completed his residency in neurology at Seton Hall University Neuroscience Institute in New Jersey and a fellowship in neurological rehabilitation at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital. He has served as a research investigator for multiple clinical trials on dementia and stroke and is the Chairman of the Institutional Review Board.

Along with Dr. Fonzetti, the clinical team in the METS program includes neuropsychologist Joseph Hirsch, Ph.D., clinical coordinator Rosanna Cirio, M.A. and METS coordinator Kathy Burns, RN. Larry Fair, who once called The Wartburg Orphans’ Farm School home, said, “All I can say is that I feel very honored and humbled that Wartburg, who has set the foundation in which I build my life on, is honoring me. I am thankful for this honor and for their continued support of me and The Future Society Inc.'s vision.”

The Future Society, Inc. is a local non-profit, providing mentoring activities for disadvantaged inner city youth and support mechanisms for parents. During his remarks at the event, Mr. Fair attributes the life lessons and upbringing while at The Wartburg Orphans’ Farm School, particularly the guidance received by his housemother, Ms. Alfrieda Gross, as the reason for his life’s work with children.

The Alzheimer's Association Hudson Valley NY Chapter is a dedicated community partner supporting research initiatives and providing assistance to those affected by the disease.

Wartburg has a long-standing partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association including offering educational seminars and collaborating on community arts-based programming for older adults living with memory impairment.

Understanding the benefits of stimulation for this patient population, Wartburg and the Alzheimer’s Association announced their collaboration, funded in part by a grant from NYS Department of Health, on a choir program for those in the community living with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia and their caregivers.

Saint Peter’s Church, located in midtown Manhattan, is a spiritual care provider to the New York City community and longtime supporter of Wartburg’s mission. St. Peter’s has long partnered with Wartburg from its inception as The Wartburg Orphans’ Farm School in 1866 through today as a spiritual care provider to older adults.

The fourth annual Jazz in June gala for Wartburg, a leading senior service provider in Westchester, NY, raised nearly $165,000 on June 16, 2016. The event was held at the Surf Club on the Sound in New Rochelle, NY, with over 300 guests and 36 sponsors. This year’s event included special guests B. Smith and Dan Gasby and honorees included The Wartburg Orphans’ Farm School Alumnus and Founder/CEO of The Future Society, Inc., Larry Fair; dedicated partner and service provider, the Alzheimer’s Association Hudson Valley NY Chapter and longtime spiritual partner, St. Peter’s Church in New York City.

B. Smith, an international model, TV host, restaurateur and author, and her husband and television producer, Dan Gasby, were this year’s keynote speakers. B. Smith was diagnosed in 2012 with early onset Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 62. B. and Dan have since been praised for their bare-all book about their journey, “Before I Forget: Love, Hope and Acceptance in our Fight Against Alzheimer’s (2016).”

For instance, as you get older, even if you feel healthy, you are at greater risk for certain medical conditions.

One condition you have a greater chance of developing as you get older is shingles, the common name for herpes zoster – a painful, red, blistering rash, that can last up to 30 days. Unfortunately, if you’ve ever had chickenpox – and 98 percent of U.S. adults have – you’re at risk for shingles, because the virus that causes chickenpox never leaves the body. As you age, your risk for shingles increases due to the normal age-related decline in the immune system that makes it easier for the shingles virus to break through the body’s defenses.

itchy,” says Dr. Adriana Perez, PhD, ANP-BC, FAAN, assistant professor and Southwest Borderlands scholar at Arizona State University and co-director at the Hartford Center of Gerontological Nursing Excellence. “The first symptoms of shingles are often felt, but may not be seen, and may initially include itching, tingling or burning in a specific area on one side of the face or body. Soon after, a rash of blisters appear and sharp pain emerges on the same part of the skin where the initial symptoms were felt.”

Shingles most commonly appears on a single side of the torso, but it can appear anywhere on the body – even the face. For most people, after the shingles rash heals, the pain and itch subside, and the blisters heal, but in some cases, even after the rash heals, there can be permanent scarring.

The CDC estimates there are approximately 1 million cases of shingles each year and that one in three people will get shingles during their lifetime. In some cases, shingles can cause complications like postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), which is long-term nerve pain that can last for months, even years after the blisters heal and the rash disappears.

“There’s no way to predict if or when someone will get shingles, or how severe the case could be, so speaking with a health care professional to understand your personal risk is important,” says Dr. Perez.

Dominican Sisters Family Health Service/ Family Home Health Care Partner with Dementia Care Alliance

Dominican Sisters Family Health Service (DSFHS) and its affiliate, Family Home Health Care (FHHC), which provides para- professional home care services, teamed up with Engaging Alzheimer’s Dementia Care Alliance which facilitated the first in a series of workshops for FHHC staff. The interactive workshop was well attended by FHHC management, nurses and home health aides on July 7th at FHHC’s offices in Tarrytown.

DSFHS/FHHC is now a member of The Dementia Care Alliance which will provide access to materials and workshops that offer specialized training in dementia care to those who provide care to patients in the home.

“As the population ages, and increasing numbers of patients suffer from dementia, it is essential that FHHC staff be trained in dementia care best practices,” said Sharon Niman, FHHC Administrator.

Assisted-Living Facilities There may come a day when your loved one can no longer be cared for at home. If she doesn’t need 24-hour nursing care, an assisted-living facility may be good choice. They provide housing, meals, and activities, but are much less expensive than nursing homes. Look for one with an Alzheimer’s special care unit that can give 24-hour supervision and personal care to meet the needs of people with dementia.

Could It Be Alzheimer's?

It’s normal for people to become a bit forgetful as they age. So how can you tell a harmless "senior moment" from Alzheimer's disease? One in eight people 65 and older have this devastating form of dementia. In its first stages, Alzheimer’s may not be obvious to friends and family.

But there are some early warning signs to watch for.

Memory and Speech In early Alzheimer’s, long-term memories usually remain intact while short-term memories become sketchy. Your loved one may forget conversations you had. She may repeat questions that were already answered. The disease also disrupts speech, so she might struggle to remember common words.

Behavior In addition to memory loss, Alzheimer’s can cause confusion and behavior changes. Your loved one may get lost in familiar places. Mood swings and lapses in judgment are also common, as is poor hygiene.

People who were once stylish may start wearing stained clothes and forget to wash their hair.

How Is It Diagnosed?

There’s no simple test for Alzheimer’s, so the doctor will rely on you to describe the changes in your loved one. A mental status test, sometimes called a “mini-cog,” or other screening tests can measure his mental skills and short-term memory. Neurological exams and brain scans may be used to rule out other problems, like a stroke or tumor.

How Is It Treated?

There’s no cure for Alzheimer’s and no way to slow the nerve damage it causes in the brain. But there are medications that appear to help maintain mental skills and slow the disease’s effects. If your loved one gets treatment early on, she may be able to stay independent and do her daily tasks for a longer period of time.

Home Health Care Many people want to stay in their own homes as long as possible.

That’s not easy if they have trouble getting dressed or using the bathroom on their own. A home health aide can help with personal hygiene and other daily tasks.
