Wartburg Kicks off 150th Anniversary with the return of the Fall Festival PAGE 4

Wartburg kicked off its 150th anniversary with an event-filled Fall Festival on Saturday, October 3 from 11 AM to 5 PM on their beautiful 34-acre campus in Mt. Vernon. It featured musical recitals from a German dance troup, the Bavarian Dancers, the Joy Dance Team and Cynthia Nixon & the Soul Latin Line Dancers. There was an abundance of children’s activities such as games, an obstacle course, bounce house and face painting. Attendees could participate in a drum circle, see what local vendors were offering, and enjoy a Farmers Market, grilled food or Caribbean cuisine by one of the local restaurants serving food that day– all for the enjoyment of Wartburg residents, their families and the people of Mt. Vernon and surrounding Westchester communities. Nearly 500 people attended.

“This festival was held to honor our past, celebrate the present and build for the future.

Our history was highlighted throughout our campus, we celebrated the present with the dedication of the Dale and Yvonne Gatz Conference Center and we are building for the future with our expansion of home care services in the New York Metro area and our Outpatient Center scheduled to open in late Fall this year,” said David Gentner, president and CEO of Wartburg. “It was a success beyond our expectations and we are extremely pleased with the positive feedback we received from those attending the festival.”

Those who joined in the Fall Festival fun could try their luck with raffle drawings for fabulous prizes donated by businesses throughout the county. And any child who participated in any one of the fun games

provided had the chance to win sports equipment or one of four brand new bicycles, generously donated by Wartburg’s President and CEO, David Gentner.

In honoring Wartburg’s 150 year history, guests could view an interactive timeline displayed on a large screen highlighting events from 1866 to present day. There were also iPads throughout campus playing Wartburg’s documentary segment featuring their awardwinning, internationally recognized Council for Creative Aging & Lifelong Learning in PBS’s Visionaries series, airing now.

The day also included the dedication of the newly-named Dale and Yvonne Gatz Conference Center, named after Wartburg’s 8th president and his wife, an active volunteer during their tenure. Afterwards, attendees could browse and purchase local art in the Got Art? Inc. Exhibit located in the conference center.

In 1866, Wartburg began as the Wartburg Orphan Farm School and provided a safe haven for children until the late 1970’s. To honor these alumni, the festival included a special chapel service and reception for former Wartburg Orphan Farm School residents who embraced, reminisced and scanned old photos from times past…and some even found their younger versions among the array of pictures.

“The festival was for me a joy - for the first time being able to meet and talk to alumni. I truly appreciate the Wartburg in its continuing willingness to support the memories of those of us who spent time there.” said Edward von Koenigseck, an alumnus of The Wartburg Orphans’ Farm School, who attended Wartburg’s Homecoming Reception welcoming all alumni home at the Fall Festival.

“Wartburg is proud to bring together the local communities to celebrate Wartburg’s history and mission on our beautiful campus. We are especially excited to welcome back our alumni with a reunion for those who once lived here as children and called Wartburg home.” said Angela Ciminello, director of development and marketing at Wartburg.

Westchester County Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s® raises over $345,774 and counting PAGE 8

More than 1,300 residents of Westchester County and vicinity joined the Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s® and united in a movement to reclaim the future for millions on Sunday, October 4th at White Plains High School. Participants raised more than $345,774 to fund Alzheimer's care, support, advocacy and research programs.

Donations for the event will continue to be accepted through the end of November so the Alzheimer’s Association Hudson Valley Chapter expects that already record-breaking total to rise even further.

Per Walk Director Terry Kean, “This year’s walkers and sponsors helped us shatter our previous fundraising totals. They made the day a success in every way.”

The team from Byram Hills High School raised the largest amount of funds with a total of $32,500 followed by Team GRF New York with $19,420 and Team SQAD at $18,938.

Top individual fundraisers include Stuart Alperin, Todd Kamelhar and Cindy Shmerler.

Congresswoman Nita Lowey, who has introduced legislation that would provide Social Security Earnings Credit for Caregivers spoke movingly at the opening ceremony. Also lending their voices and support were New York Assemblyman David Buchwald and White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach.

Alzheimer’s Association Hudson Valley Board Chairman, Neil Klar engaged the crowd in the creation of a Promise Garden filled with flowers representing the various ways in which participants have been affected by and/or are working to combat Alzheimer’s. D.J. Gatsby rocked the crowd with his music, while the cheerleading squad from Byram Hills High shouted praise for participants at the Walk’s finish line.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s participants did more than take a stroll on Sunday. They learned about Alzheimer’s disease and how to

get involved with this critical cause, from advocacy opportunities, clinical studies and support programs and services. The event also included an emotional tribute to those who have experienced or are experiencing Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and the nation’s sixth-

Mind your heart: Calories and fat still count during the holidays.

Overeating can lead to everything from heartburn to a heart attack. Limit gravies, butter and other high-fat choices with plenty of vegetables and lean white meat. If you experience chest pain, don't delay seeing a doctor.

Drink in moderation: Besides a nasty hangover and obvious safety hazards, over-imbibing can have many negative effects - some social and some physical - including depression, an inammation of the pancreas, hepatitis and an irregular heartbeat. Limit your intake to no more than one alcoholic drink per day for women and no more than two drinks per day for men. And never drink and drive.

Plan ahead: Be sure to have an up-to-date list of medications you are taking. If you do face a health emergency during the holidays, it's important for your doctor to know your current medical conditions and have a list of your medications.

Traveling during the holidays can be stressful and dangerous for everyone for many reasons.

Bad weather, reckless drivers trying to get to their family gatherings as quickly as possible, drunk drivers, delayed flights, and the list goes on. Senior citizens may have a more difficult time than other drivers due to the effects of age on their driving skills and energy levels.

Here are some tips for senior citizen travelers during this extra stressful time: Plan ahead: If you are driving, it makes sense to plan your route and the times you will be traveling ahead of time. Pick the most efficient route for you. Plan your route so that you are traveling through the highest traffic areas in the late morning, afternoon, or late evening to avoid the morning and evening rushes.

Plan ahead when flying to save money: Purchase your tickets ahead of time for lower prices and travel on lighter traveling days. You can sign up for many online services that will let you know ahead of time about travel deals during the holidays.

The day before Thanksgiving and the following Sunday are the busiest travel days, so avoid traveling by air on those days. Flying on Black Friday will avoid the crowds because most people will be shopping.

Take advantage of mobile apps: iPhone users can take advantage of useful applications.

Smart phones can track airport information. Keep track of gate changes, flight delays, take-off times, eating and bathroom locations. Some airlines have apps for check-in, tracking flight status, and even seat confirmation.

Whether driving or flying, smart phones have great GPS apps that will get you where you’re going without having to look at a map.

Be sure to fill up: Driving in bad weather is taxing enough without worrying about running out of gas. Be sure to fill your tank when it hits the halfway point so that you don’t risk running out.

Always have a backup: If you don’t have a smart phone or prefer not to use one, take your map and use highlighters.

Highlighting your route will make it easy to see where you are going. Add and highlight exit numbers and rest stops as well.

The easier it is to see, the less stressful your tip will be.

Celebrate Aging: The Livable Communities Village Fair Boomers & Beyond - Westchester

Westchester County Senior Programs and Services had a free event for seniors and their families: the Second Annual Celebrate Aging Livable Communities Village Fair on Tuesday, September 16th.

“The event is upbeat and showcase some of the best programming Westchester has to offer,” Astorino said.

The Celebrate Aging Village Fair took place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 16 at the Mount Pleasant Community Center, 125 Lozza Drive in Valhalla with exciting activities, lively discussion and interactive learning with inspired community partners from across Westchester County.
