Two of Family Services of Westchester, Inc.’s (FSW’s) programs serving older adults, RideConnect and My Second Home, recently celebrated the contributions of their volunteers during Volunteer Appreciation Week at an event in Mt. Kisco. The RideConnect program provides rides and transportation referrals for older adults, the disabled and home health care workers in Westchester County.

The program relies on volunteers who make it possible for these individuals to remain mobile and independent in their home communities. “Without our volunteers, residents throughout Westchester would have a very difficult time getting to doctor’s appointments, running errands, visiting with family members, attending religious services or going to the library,” said Karen Ganis, Director of RideConnect. “Our volunteers also help home health workers get to their clients which is truly a life saver.” RideConnect currently has over 60 volunteers. In the first three months of 2015 alone, the program provided nearly 2,500 rides and referrals. In 2014, the program provided over 12,000 rides and referrals.

My Second Home, FSW’s award-winning adult day program in Mt. Kisco, also relies on volunteers to work with the program participants, most of whom have some type of cognitive impairment such as Alzheimer’s Disease. More than 20 volunteers currently support the My Second Home staff.

In order to convey the important role of volunteers in both of these programs, it is helpful to hear directly from those who volunteer and those who benefit from the volunteer services.

Patricia Jordan has been volunteering with RideConnect since 2012. "When I started volunteering with RideConnect three years ago,

my main objective was to help older people maintain their independence and remain in their own homes -- and how better to do that than to help them to remain active participants within the communities of which they are a part? What I didn't realize was how enriching the experience would be. I have met dozens of wonderful people who are so grateful for the help we at RideConnect are able to provide.

What they don't realize is how grateful I am to them for allowing me to hear their stories, laugh with them and be even a small part of their lives. I've learned so much from these men and women!" Mary P., a RideConnect client who lives in Yorktown, echoes these sentiments. “I am so appreciative of the volunteers who give their time to drive me and others. What is most important to me is that I am now able to visit my husband at the NY Veterans Home in Montrose. I wish you could see his happy smile when he sees me. Essential doctor appointments are another great service. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your good deeds."

David Bubser, a volunteer who has been working for more than two years with adults who have concerns about their cognitive functioning in the Evening Edition program at My Second Home says, “Volunteering is a mutually satisfying situation – great for the taker and even greater for the giver.”

Now that you've finally planned your garden to perfection, it's time to think about how much time and effort you want to put into it. While avid gardeners may want to spend all day with their sprouts, a low-maintenance plot can be fulfilling to both greenthumbs and novices alike - especially if you're looking to enjoy the other amenities available at a senior living community in your spare time.

The first step is to find perennials that are hardier and more self-sufficient than other, more delicate flowers. Ferns and native wildflowers are particularly well-suited for this approach. If you choose to plant some shrubs, make sure they have enough room to fully grow - the publication recommends giving each plant eight feet of space.

Scatter some woodchips between the sprouts and then layer the areas with mulch.

The news source states that mulch can also be used as a way to prevent weed growth around trees.

Once the shrubs have started to flourish, gardeners should plant bulbs that flower in the spring or fall to bring a nice pop of color in their plot!

LeadingAge New York, the state’s premier association of aging services organizations, graduated 21 fellows from its prestigious, year-long Leadership Academy during a April 15 ceremony held at Wartburg, an award-winning senior services provider located in Mount Vernon, NY. The academy program provides a challenging learning environment – including assigned readings, discussions (called study circles), site visits and other activities – that enhances the leadership capacity of senior care professionals so they are better equipped to serve the aging-services field.

The fellows, from across the state, visited Wartburg’s 34-acre campus to observe innovative programs in aging, an activity which is part of the Academy’s rigorous yearlong curriculum. To maximize their experience, Wartburg hosted a panel led by senior Wartburg staff, to discuss the various areas of senior care. The expert panel included Janet Palazzolo, Vice President of Residential Services and Corporate Compliance, Dorothea Bell, Executive

Vice President of Human Resources, Rev. Carol Fryer, Director of Pastoral Care, Paulette Watson, Director of Nursing, and Paula Ress, Administrator.

Elder and Adult Family Mediation: A Solution for Family Conflict Boomers & Beyond - Westchester April, June,2015 2015

I met a neighbor of mine the other day who told me about the problem she is having with her sisters. Her mother is quite elderly and still living alone in her large home. My neighbor feels that this living arrangement is unsafe for her mother and the large house is a financial drain on the mother and the daughters.

My neighbor is 78, her mother is 100, and her sisters are all in ) dis) their mid-late 70’s. These agreements among siblings are common and although these ages are certainly higher than the norm, those who are facing this situation at late stages in life are not as rare as one might think.

People are living longer and, frequently, widowed seniors are re- marrying at later ages, creating complicated situation for the aging blended family.

Many of us can remember our grandparents being cared for by nuclear and extended families.

Unfortunately circumstances have changed. Many adult children no longer live close to home and many are working outside the home, making it more difficult to care for parents at home. Regardless of the reasons and circumstances, siblings often do not agree on the choices for the care of their parents. Frequent issues are safety, including suitable living arrangements and the ability to drive, finances, kind of care needed, and who will assume responsibility for the care. One option for resolving these differences that is becoming more popular is mediation. When the siblings can no longer discuss the problems or reach decisions, the participation of a neutral, third party can get the conversation * %$ is ) a &(% )) *that* going.
