When Harry Wruble hires someone at Glen Island Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, he carefully reviews their credentials and resume.

However, Wruble also looks at something else closely.

“They have to have heart,” said Wruble, Glen Island’s Administrator/Corporate Compliance Officer. “We want people that take pride in their work. We want people who do great work.

I can’t begin to tell you how great our staff is. When we hand out our satisfaction surveys, we get great reviews.”

Glen Island, located in New Rochelle, is committed to providing residents with compassionate nursing care and always respects their personal dignity. The average stay at Glen Island for guests ranges from four to five days, to eight weeks. At the time of placement, residents are assessed for their restorative potential to return home. Guests that are evaluated as being able to return to the community after treatment are deemed short-term. The need for restorative therapy (physical, occupational, speech), or sub-acute nursing care are the most common reasons for short-term placement. Residents who are chronically sick, disabled, or diagnosed with dementia are more likely to be admitted for a lengthy stay and considered long-term.

Cardio, Strength Training tips for seniors Boomers & Beyond - Westchester

Regular exercise can help control your blood pressure, strengthen your heart and bones, boost energy and even help reduce depression. You are never too old to exercise. If you have a chronic condition, be sure to get sign-off from your physician. Dr. Deborah Rohm Young, chair of the American Heart Association’s Physical Activity Subcommittee, recommends regular physical activity for every person, including senior citizens.

Rohm Young shares her cardio, strength training and stretching tips for seniors below to help you create a workout routine you can do throughout the week and build upon.

“Participating in physical activity will make you feel better almost immediately,” she says.

“It is best to exercise 30 minutes per day at least five days per week for the best benefit.”

Cardio tips For overall health benefits to the heart, lungs and circulation, perform any moderate- to vigorous-intensity aerobic activity using the following guidelines.

Walking For seniors who’ve led sedentary lifestyles, Rohm Young suggests starting a cardio regimen by walking around your yard or neighborhood.

Start slow and work up from there. “Just get outdoors and go for a walk,” she advises. “Start with 10 minutes and work up to 30 minutes per day.

Light jogging When you are ready to begin jogging, start by warming up for 10 minutes with a steady walk. From there, try lightly jogging for three to five minutes at a time, then rest. Over time, try to work up to a 20-minute light jog.

Strength training Muscle strengthening activities are recommended at least two days each week, according to the AHA. Try these at home to improve your physical strength.

Leg exercises Sit erect in a chair with your feet firmly planted on the ground, shoulderwidth apart. Lift one leg off the floor until your knee is straight and hold that position for a few seconds. Then, return that leg to the starting position with both feet on the ground. Repeat on the other side. Work up to eight repetitions on each side.

Arm raises Sit erect in a chair with your feet flat on the ground and arms by your sides, holding light weights in each hand. Start by holding your arms straight down by your sides with your palms facing in. Keep a small bend in your elbows and slowly lift both arms out and up until they are perpendicular to your body and parallel to the ground. Hold for a second and slowly go down to the starting position. Pause and then repeat this exercise six to eight times.

Tricep extensions Sit erect in a chair with your feet flat on the ground and a light weight in your left hand. Bend your left elbow straight up next to your ear, so it is pointing to the ceiling. Use your right hand to support your left elbow and then slowly straighten your left arm to the ceiling. Hold this position for a second and then lower your forearm to the starting position. Do this six to eight times and then switch to your right side.

3. Buy nuts and high fiber foods.

Fiber can help lower blood cholesterol, and it keeps you full, which helps you maintain a healthy weight. You can find fiber in fruits, veggies, beans and whole-grain breads and cereals, as well as in nuts. Almonds and walnuts also have plenty of other valuable nutrients and have been shown in recent studies to have a significant impact on heart health.

4. Consider frozen or canned fruits and veggies.

Making sure the kitchen is well-stocked with healthy items — and low on tempting junk food — will help your loved ones get the right nutrition.

“Remember that frozen fruits and vegetables have the same vitamins and minerals in them, though their prices may be radically different,” suggests Heather. “This knowledge makes keeping the kitchen stocked with cholesterol and blood pressure lowering foods a little easier. Canned fruits and veggies offer similar benefits, though choose unsalted or unsweetened varieties when possible.”

Eating better is one of the Heart Association’s “Simple 7” factors for improved heart health. When you maintain a healthy diet along with regular physical exercise and other good habits, you’ll not only feel better, but you’ll live longer — and of course we want our senior loved ones to stay healthy and vital for as long as possible, too.

February is Heart Health Month, and there’s no better time to do a “gut check” on the foods you and your loved ones are eating.

6. Read nutrition labels.

Replacing sugary drinks like soda or fruit juice with herbal teas is a great way to eliminate some sugar from your diet, but what about sodium? It’s easy for salt to sneak in, especially with prepared foods, so be sure to read the nutrition label.

7. Avoid rushing into major changes.

Eating for heart health can seem overwhelming, but don’t get discouraged. Start with small steps, and soon the whole family will be eating better — these dietary guidelines are great for everyone, not just seniors.

1. Buy colorful fruits and vegetables.

Low in calories, high in vitamins, minerals and fiber — adults should get at least five servings per day of these nutrition powerhouses.

A Place for Mom senior nutrition expert Heather Schwartz recommends, “When getting ready to head to the check-out line, check the basket to make sure you have a variety of colored fruits and vegetables to ensure you get the rainbow of benefits each color has to offer. Colors indicate a concentration of a specific nutrient; for example, tomatoes are dense in lutein, which is great for your heart and eyes.”

2. Avoid buying high fat dairy or meat.

Look for skinless cuts of lean meat with the least amount of visible fat.

Cuts that say “loin” after them, like sirloin and tenderloin, are often leaner cuts. Ground meats should have less than 20% fat, whether it’s chicken, turkey, pork or beef. Yogurt, milk, cheese and other dairy products should also be low in fat — 2% “reduced fat” or less.

The one kind of fat you do want your loved ones to get plenty of is fatty fish: two servings a week of salmon, trout, or other oily fish can help lower the risk of heart disease and increase the body’s level of healthy omega-3s.

5. Avoid buying butter.

We all know these are the culprits of poor dietary health, but this is particularly important advice for seniors. Avoiding these three can help lower cholesterol. Try to eat less than 300 milligrams of cholesterol per day, avoid foods containing partially hydrogenated vegetable oils and follow the tips for consuming lean protein and dairy.

Destination Spotlight:Puerto Rico Did winter sneak up on you this year, as it did me? With the unseasonably warm weather that we’ve had this season, the last thing on my mind was planning a trip to somewhere even warmer. However, winter always catches up and I am the type of person who does not prefer cold and snow! What if you don’t have a passport and want to plan something fast? Is your only option to go to Florida? There are absolutely some great places there but as an alternative, I would suggest Puerto Rico. It’s only about 3 1/2 hours from New York City to San Juan and the temperature is in the low 80’s during the day and doesn’t get below 70 at night. With beach, culture, history, nightlife and nature, there is something for everyone. With such an easy flight, you can easily plan a weekend getaway or stay for a week or longer. Here are some suggestions on what to do and see while you are there.

Old San Juan At only seven square blocks, Old San Juan might be small but it is full of sights. Although it is easily walkable, there is a free trolley that makes frequent stops throughout the city. There are the two old fortresses, both of which are UNESCO World Heritage sights and very interesting to see how the people of San Juan defended the island throughout the years. The San Juan Cathedral is just one of many churches, all of which are hundreds of years old. There is plenty of shopping on Fortaleza street, including several stores carrying local Puerto Rican crafts. The Museum of the Americas and the San Juan Museum are two of the great museums there.

You won’t be wanting for food or nightlife either. Cafe Puerto Rico has some of the best Mofongo and is an authentic Puerto Rican dining experience. After dinner try La Factoria, which was named to the 2015’s World’s 50 Best Bars list.

Bioluminescent Bay Vieques is an island off of the eastern shore of Puerto Rico and home to Mosquito Bay, the brightest bio-bay in the world. Full of plankton that absorb the sunlight during the day, at night they generate a blue neon looking light. This is best seen with a darker night sky so make sure to plan your visit after the full moon.

Beaches and Water Sports Whether you want to lay on the beach or get into the water, there are lots of options in Puerto Rico. Since it’s an island, there are beautiful beaches all over, and many of them are Blue Flag certified. Among these are El Escambron in San Juan, Seven Seas in eastern Fajardo and Pelican Beach off of Ponce in the south. If you prefer something more active, there is windsurfing, sailing, fishing and kayaking available all over the island. Additionally, there is some of the best scuba diving and snorkeling anywhere. The water is warm and there is really good underwater visibility - up to 100 feet in some places!

Forests and Wildlife El Yunque Rainforest is about 30 minutes outside of San Juan and has miles of trails among natural pools of wanter and towering peaks with great views of the eastern shore. In contrast, there is Cabo Rojo Salt Flats. There are still salt mining operations going on today, but there is also a stark and barren landscape with trails that are excellent for bird watching. January is in the middle of the whale season so you can keep an eye out for humpback whales at the observation park of the Rincon Lighthouse.

“We’re incredibly proud that Dr. Fishman has been recognized by the American Heart Association as a leader in basic cardiology research, which acknowledges his vast achievements in advancing

the science of this field,” said Dafna Bar-Sagi, PhD, senior vice president and vice dean for Science and chief scientific officer at NYU School of Medicine. “This award celebrates his internationally recognized discoveries that have contributed to the greater understanding of cardiovascular biology and disease, and we’re honored that Dr. Fishman has been chosen to receive this prestigious award.”

The $5,000 basic excellence award was presented to Dr. Fishman during the opening session of the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions

2015 in Orlando, Florida. Dr. Fishman is the William Goldring Professor of Medicine and has been the Director of the Leon H. Charney Division of Cardiology at NYU Langone since 2001. He holds professorships in the Departments of Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology, Medicine, Physiology and Neuroscience. Recently, he was appointed Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Medicine.

As a recognized leader in his field, Dr. Fishman has contributed groundbreaking research into the causes of heart

disease at the molecular level.

His studies have yielded invaluable fundamental information and have had the exciting potential to point medical science toward answers about the sources of cardiovascular diseases, especially those causing arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. Among Dr. Fishman’s advances has been the creation of genetically engineered animal models that enabled his research teams to explore the molecular abnormalities producing arrhythmias, and to experiment with new techniques to overcome them.

During his career, Dr. Fishman has published extensively in major journals including the AHA’s Circulation, Circulation Research and Circulation Arrhythmias and Electrophysiology.

Other studies have appeared in Nature, Nature Genetics, the Journal of Clinical Investigation, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Journal of Physiology, among others. His research has been funded for more than 25 years by the National Institutes of Health, the AHA, the state of New York and several foundations.

Dr. Fishman has been a leader of high-profile national committees, serving as chair of the National Institutes of Health Electrical Signaling, Ion Transport and Arrhythmias Study Section and as co-chair of the NIH/NHLBI/HRS Workshop on Prediction and Prevention of Sudden Cardiac Death. He is currently President of the Cardiac Electrophysiology Society and a member of the NHLBI Program Project Review Committee. His past honors include election to the American Society of Clinical Investigation, American Association of Physicians, Association of University Cardiologists and the Harvey Society. An AHA Established Investigator, Doctor Fishman also received the Louis Katz Basic Science Award for Young Investigators. He has served on the Board of Directors of the AHA Founders and the Heart Rhythm Society. He has served on the editorial boards of seven journals including Circulation and Circulation Research.

Increasing physical activity can help improve your overall health, heart health, and quality of life.

If you’ve had a heart attack, your heart may be damaged. This could affect your heart’s rhythm, pumping action, and blood circulation. You also may be at risk for another heart attack or conditions such as stroke, kidney disorders, and peripheral arterial disease (PAD). You can lower your chances of having future health problems following a heart attack with these steps: • Physical Activity—Talk to your health care team about the things you do each day in your life and work. Your doctor may want you to limit work, travel, or sexual activity for some time after a heart attack.

• Lifestyle Changes—Eating a healthier diet, increasing physical activity, quitting smoking, and managing stress—in addition to taking prescribed medications—can help improve your heart health and quality of life. Ask your health care team about attending a program called cardiac rehabilitation to help you make these lifestyle changes.

Exercise and Heart Disease

The heart is a muscle and needs exercise to stay in shape. When it's exercised, the heart can pump more blood through the body and continue working at optimal efficiency with little strain. This will likely help it to stay healthy longer. Regular exercise also helps to keep arteries and other blood vessels flexible, ensuring good blood flow and normal blood pressure and cholesterol.

Don’t worry—when it comes to exercise, a little bit performed regularly goes a long way.

According to the American Heart Association (AHA), exercising 30 minutes a day, five days a week will improve your heart health and help reduce your risk of heart disease. You can even break it up into quick and manageable 10-minute sessions, three times a day.

Just be sure to check with your doctor before starting a new exercise routine, as exercising with a heart condition can put extra strain on your heart.
