More than 300 healthcare professionals, care partners and individuals living with or dealing with Alzheimer’s disease attended the first annual Hudson Valley region’s dementia conference, presented by the Alzheimer’s Association - Hudson Valley Chapter. Billed as a full day of engaging, connecting and learning, the Meeting of the Minds 2015 was held on Tuesday, June 9th at the DoubleTree Hotel in Tarrytown.

Alzheimer’s is one of the most pressing health concerns of today and our future, yet many cases go undiagnosed.The local lives impacted by this disease was well illustrated by the number of people in the conference rooms.

Alzheimer's is the only leading cause of death among the top 10 in the U.S. without a way to prevent, cure or even slow its progression – yet.

It is the most expensive condition in the nation. Nearly 1 in 5 Medicare dollars is spent on a person with Alzheimer’s. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, if nothing is done, the cost of Alzheimer’s is expected to increase fivefold by midcentury from $226 billion in 2015 to $1.1 trillion in 2050, effectively breaking the Medicare system.

1. Visit your local senior center Community senior centers offer a wide-variety of activities to help their members stay active.

2. Join a walking club Walking clubs can be a wonderful change to walking alone or indoors. Many seniors find walking far more enjoyable in a group and it is a great low-impact exercise that can increase heart rate and build muscle.

3. Go dancing Dancing for 30 minutes a day can often help reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke and can even be an effective form of physical therapy for seniors. It also improves balance and builds lean muscle.

4. Make a splash For those suffering from arthritis, swimming can be a nice alternative to walking.

Swimming a few laps or participating in a water aerobics class can help to increase heart rate and build muscle without risking injury or pain to joints and stiff muscles.

5. Do some gardening Lifting, raking, digging and even weeding are great forms of exercise for seniors.

The repetitive movement helps to build muscle in the arms, back and legs.

6. Take a balance class Balance classes are wonderful for those seniors who not only want to stay active, but also are at risk for falling.

The third annual gala fundraiser for Wartburg, a leading adult care community in Westchester, NY, raised nearly $130,000 on June 18, 2015. The event was held at the Surf Club on the Sound in New Rochelle, NY, with nearly 270 guests and 21 sponsors. This year’s honorees included Terrie M. Williams, Perkins Eastman and Redeemer Lutheran Church in the Bronx, NY.

The Bristal to launch ‘Our Place Memory Café’ for those suffering with memory loss Monthly program will provide a haven for Westchester residents dealing with Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease

The Bristal at White Plains has announced that it will launch in August a free monthly program for residents in Westchester County suffering with memory loss.

Called Our Place Memory Café, the program will provide a haven for seniors suffering from Dementia, Alzheimer’s Disease and other memory loss, as well as their family members and caregivers. Light refreshments and entertainment will be provided in a support group atmosphere.

Our Place Memory Café will kick off on Tuesday, August 4 at North Street Tavern & Wood Fired Pizza, 1128 North Street, White Plains from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and will continue on the first Tuesday of every month through April (except for November, which will occur on the first Wednesday due to Election Day).

The program is sponsored by The Bristal at White Plains and the law firm of Helwig, Henderson, LaMagna & Spinola L.L.P. It is also important for people caring for a loved one with this diagnosis to have a place to relax, socialize, share thoughts, emotions, and to find answers.

Westchester Medical Center performs first MitraClip Transcatheter mitral valve repair procedure Boomers & Beyond - Westchester August, 2015

Minimally invasive heart valve repair (MitraClip procedure) offers hope to those patients deemed too high risk for traditional open mitral valve repair surgery Westchester Medical Center (WMC) recently announced that it is the first and only hospital in the Hudson Valley region to perform transcatheter mitral valve repair with the MitraClip device, a life-saving procedure to repair a diseased mitral valve without open heart surgery.

The WMC Transcatheter Heart Team uses Abbott MitraClip to treat patients with symptomatic moderate to severe mitral regurgitation who are considered high or prohibitive risk for open surgery. The team, consisting of cardiothoracic surgeons, interventional cardiologists, echo cardiologists, radiologists and cardiac anesthesiologists, performs the procedure in the state-of-the-art hybrid OR. Only a handful of hospitals in the tri-state area perform this procedure.

“It is important for us to offer all the treatment options, surgical and catheter based, to our patients” says Dr. Martin Cohen, Interventional Cardiologist and Director of Outreach and Research in Cardiology. “We have achieved a major milestone at Westchester Medical Center to now able to repair a diseased mitral valve without open heart surgery.”

“Because the procedure involves only a needle in the groin, it has made their recovery much quicker compared to traditional surgery.” says Dr. Hasan Ahmad, Interventional Cardiologist and a Heart Team member. “One of our first cases was a 94 year-old frail woman who would have been too sick for open heart surgery. She is now feeling better and enjoys spending time with her family and friends.”

“There are many elderly patients and patients with many medical issues that have moderate to severe mitral regurgitation, a leak in one of their heart valves” said Dr. Gilbert Tang, Cardiothoracic Surgeon and Director of Valve Disease Center at WMC. “Most physicians choose to treat these patients with medications but they often end up with heart failure and frequent hospital visits. The MitraClip procedure is a minimally invasive procedure that can dramatically improve the quality of life among these patients. There is no age limit for this therapy.”

Ceremony marks first “naming” of a room in Wartburg’s new Rehabilitation and Adult Day Services Building Boomers & Beyond - Westchester

Wilma Harris travelled all the way from Boca Raton, Florida recently to dedicate a room in memory of her parents that is located in Wartburg’s new, stateof-the-art Rehabilitation and Adult Day Services (ADS) building. This first “naming” of a space in the much-praised building was for the peaceful Sunroom, where ADS registrants sit and read or look onto the patio where a garden is in full bloom, or listen and watch birds in a large, enclosed sanctuary.

Ms. Harris, a long time Wartburg supporter and former resident of Pelham, was accompanied by her son, Ronald, and her daughter and son-in-law, Sunny Harris and John Mulligan. The room is named after her mother and father, August Uebel and Martha Moebus Uebel.

“I appreciate the Wartburg because it has been consistently helpful to the Lutherans and others for as far back as I can remember. I also feel some have the tendency to forget the importance of what Luther did,” said Wilma Harris.

Surrounded by ADS registrants, staff and volunteers, she was presented with a plaque, a large bouquet of flowers and a Christopher Corr painting of Wartburg’s Fall Festival, an event her children and she have fond memories of attending for many years.

"My mother was so proud to be able to donate a room in memory of her parents and to honor the very important work that the Wartburg does every day.

It is hard to express the appreciation that I and our family feel for the professionalism, kindness, and graciousness that David Gentner, our President, and Angela Ciminello, our Director of Development, showed us during the entire process,” said Ronald Harris. “It is a great bonus when you make a dona-

Family Services of Westchester, Inc. (FSW) is pleased to announce the appointment of Karen Bisignano, LMSW, as the Director of My Second Home, our social model adult day and intergenerational program in Mt. Kisco.

Ms. Bisignano replaces long-time Director Rina Bellamy, who recently left the agency in order to pursue her interests in Hospice Care and teaching.

Ms. Bisignano, a resident of the Mt. Kisco/Bedford Hills community, has a strong background working with intellectually disabled adults in individual and group settings, counseling caregivers, and developing and implementing programs to improve quality of life. She also has extensive leadership experience in film/commercial production.

Wayne, President and CEO of FSW, “as she brings the perfect combination of business acumen, clinical experience and passion, which will continue to grow what is already an award-winning program. We know that the participants and staff of My Second Home remain in good hands.”

My Second Home is the first of FSW’s two highly innovative programs that help families who are caring for older adults in Westchester County. Housed in the same building as the Mt. Kisco Child Care Center, My Second Home provides a safe, nurturing and home-like environment where older adults can continue to find meaning and dignity in their daily lives through stimulating activities,

wellness programs, personal care, excellent nutrition and “living room to living room” transportation. At My Second Home, FSW’s unique intergenerational model brings children from the Mt. Kisco Child Care Center and adults together on a daily basis to share in activities and forge relationships that promote mutual understanding and connectivity. The JEWEL (Joining Elders with Early Learners) program has been tremendously successful and has led to numerous awards and recognition: 2014 Outstanding Adult Day Center Award from the National Adult Day Services Association 2011 MindAlert Award from American Society on Aging and the MetLife Foundation 2010 Recognized by the Alliance for Children & Families for Innovation in Serving Older Adults 2008 Winner of National Best Practices Award by MetLife Foundation and Generations United 2007 Non-profit Agency of the Year, Mt. Kisco Chamber of Commerce

A New York-based documentary filmmaker, whose work has been recognized with an Academy Award® and Emmy nominations, Megan Mylan, was so touched by the power of My Second Home that she created the 2013 Living with Alzheimer’s film, My Little Friends.

The success of My Second Home prompted FSW to replicate the program in White Plains so that residents.in the southern and central regions of Westchester could benefit from similar programming. The new Lanza Family Center for All Ages houses My Second Home, as well as Early Childhood Education programs and a teen center. Specialized programming is available for each of these groups in separate wings of the building, while shared spaces allow the different age groups to come together for intergenerational activities.
