It’s almost springtime.

The weather will be nice, the plants in bloom and you finally have the chance to enjoy the great outdoors. Getting out in the sun can not only be a relaxing way to spend the day, it can also be healthier than sitting inside watching Judge Judy.

If you’re feeling adventurous, why not use the weather to your advantage and start a garden? You can choose to do it alone or if you live in an independent living community, get a group of friends together to help.

Boomers and Beyond recommends starting out by deciding what you want to plant - flowers, vegetables or a little bit of everything? Some community gardens are split into specific plots to keep things organized.

When you choose a piece of land, look for one that gets about six to eight hours of sunlight every day. Don’t forget the technical details, either - from installing sprinkler systems to protecting the plants from pests, security is an important part to any garden, because otherwise you risk having all your bulbs eaten before they get a chance to sprout.

Senior Shopping Tips: How to get the most bang for your buck when grocery shopping for yourself You probably no longer need to cook big meals for you and your family, which can be frustrating when you’re trying to buy grocery items that don’t come in bulk.

However, there are ways to shop smart, ensuring you're getting the most bang for your buck when purchasing food.

One thing you don't need to worry about is nonperishable items. Picking up a box of pasta that serves eight people will last a while, so a box of spaghetti will not go to waste if you leave some of the uncooked noodles in a sealed container.

Of course, a large part of eating healthy is incorporating fruit and vegetables into your diet, but you may be a little nervous to purchase these items, as they go bad quickly. First, it's a good idea to research what fruits and veggies are in season, as this may increase shelf life.

Additionally, you need to know how certain vegetables can be stored. For example, onions,

potatoes and garlic should be kept out of the refrigerator and directly out of sunlight, while

carrots, peas, corn and cauliflower can be frozen after they are cut up and boiled.

These kinds of tips will ensure that you're not throwing away more food than you eat.

Elder and Adult Family Mediation: A Solution for Family Conflict I met a neighbor of mine the other day who told me about the problem she is having with her sisters. Her mother is quite elderly and still living alone in her large home. My neighbor feels that this living arrangement is unsafe for her mother and the large house is a financial drain on the mother and the daughters.

My neighbor is 78, her mother is 100, and her sisters are all in their mid-late 70’s. These disagreements among siblings are common and although these ages are certainly higher than the norm, those who are facing this situation at late stages in life are not as rare as one might think.

People are living longer and, frequently, widowed seniors are re- marrying at later ages, creating complicated situation for the aging blended family.

Many of us can remember our grandparents being cared for by nuclear and extended families.

Unfortunately circumstances have changed. Many adult children no longer live close to home and many are working outside the home, making it more difficult to care for parents at home. Regardless of the reasons and circumstances, siblings often do not agree on the choices for the care of their parents. Frequent issues are safety, including suitable living arrangements and the ability to drive, finances, kind of care needed, and who will assume responsibility for the care. One option for resolving these differences that is becoming more popular is mediation. The Power of Pets Everyone knows how a pet becomes a part of the family. Their well- being is of equal importance to our own, and our children’s. We buy them the best food, take them to the best vet, and get up in the middle of the night or early morning to do their bidding, even get them x-rays and blood tests when something is amiss.

It’s no surprise then, that pets are being recognized for the positive role they can continue to play in providing a sense of purpose and companionship for aging seniors, whether in their own homes or in senior communities. Having to care for, and to be cared for by, a pet is a natural antidote to loneliness and a myriad of other conditions experienced by seniors.

In fact, according to Lynn M. Hayner, author of “Retirement Revolution,” in which she reports on the rising trend of dogfriendly senior-living facilities, some of the documented health benefits attributed to having a pet include: Decreased Doctor Visits Reduced Depression Lower Cholesterol and Triglyceride levels Reduced Stress Increased Social Interaction Healthier Heart Rates Having a Sense of Purpose She says that in a national network of 20,000 Assisted Living Providers, 64% now accept pets! There is a growing recognition that in addition to the physical health benefits of having a pet, the renewed sense of purpose experienced by seniors to once again have someone depending on them, also has a tremendously positive effect on their psyche and outlook. Caring for a pet, also provides structure to their day as seniors plan their daily routines. And, of course, pets are not just beneficial to their owners, but to other seniors as well. Often new or lonely residents are drawn out of their shyness by the pet, which can also serve as an icebreaker for them in interacting socially with other residents.

While seniors residing in nursing homes cannot bring their pets with them, they can still experience the comfort of an animal’s presence through Pet Therapy programs implemented at most nursing facilities. Also, some nursing facilities will adopt a pet so that it is onsite 24/7 giving residents the opportunity to participate in its care as well as interact with it every day.

At Bethel Homes and Services, residents have long enjoyed Pet Therapy and Pet Ownership at its programs. Through its’ Volunteer Program, owners and their Therapy-Certified dogs have come onsite to visit with residents, much to their joy. The smiles on each person’s face says it all when it’s their turn to pet and greet the dogs.

Family pets may visit as well provided there is documentation of their immunizations as we must ensure a safe environment for all residents, family members and staff.

In fact, several years ago, two homeless kittens were taken in at Bethel’s Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, much to the delight of residents and staff. The kittens quickly became a part of resident life beginning with a contest to name them as well as creating schedules as to who would help care for the pair. The residents, visitors and staff were delighted to see the kittens roaming the halls, offices, lobby and rooms.

In addition, seniors at Bethel’s Independent and Assisted Senior Living residences can bring their pets when they move in provided, of course, that they are able to manage their care. Recognizing that transitions can be difficult, emotionally and physically, Bethel is pleased to be able to offer residents the option to bring their pets. The familiarity and comfort of having their companion cannot be measured! In the event that the resident can no longer care for their pet, they (or their family) become responsible for making alternate arrangements to ensure the pet receives the care it needs each day.

Ms. Mary Jane Lowder, a resident at The Pines Independent Senior Living Residence, has had her feline companion, Winky, a.k.a Kitty-Kitty, for five years. “I got Winky at a shelter and had her for a year before I came

to The Pines,” explains the former Edgemont resident. “I couldn’t imagine being here without her.

She greets me at the door when I come in and that makes a big difference when you live alone.”

Kitty-Kitty is a trim, black and white cat and very vocally responsive with a deep “meow” when addressed. According to Ms. Lowder, “Kitty-Kitty is a wonderful little companion. Like most cats she is independent, but she’ll sit on my lap while I’m watching TV. I sing to her and talk to her. Sometimes the elderly might not want to complain to other people about different things, but cats are not judgmental so I tell Kitty-Kitty when my arthritis hurts and my hip is aching. She listens to me, but isn’t judging me!” she says.

“I can see how seniors would be lonely if they didn’t have a pet to be responsible for,” she said.

“It’s heartbreaking to give up your pet. If you’re moving, and alone, you want to be able to take your pet with you. Even if everything else is changing in your life, you can still have your pet.

That doesn’t have to change,” Ms. Lowder continued.

Says, Marsha Schlig, Service Coordinator at The Pines Independent Senior Living Apartments, “The Pines welcomes most furry tenants. Their presence makes the transition to a new environment so much easier for their owners. I believe pets are extensions of a reassuring family. They are a link to past experiences and companions on this new venture.”

Mayor Tom Roach, Deputy County Executive Kevin Plunkett and other Officials welcome Family Services of Westchester’s Lanza Family Center for All Ages to White Plains On Tuesday, February 24th, 2015, Family Services of Westchester (FSW), along with more than 100 local dignitaries, supporters and guests celebrated the culmination of a goal set years ago--to bring a state-of-the art intergenerational facility to White Plains-- with a ribbon cutting ceremony at the new Lanza Family Center for All Ages.

Nick Wolff, FSW’s Chairman of the Board and longtime White Plains resident, expressed his gratitude to all those who worked so hard to bring this multigenerational center to White Plains. “There are so many people responsible for helping us get to this point including my colleagues on the Board, FSW staff and most importantly our generous donors.” He also thanked the City of White Plains government officials as well the North Broadway Neighborhood Association for welcoming the Center to their community.

Following the official ribbon cutting, , guests were given an opportunity to tour the facility, including the The Marjorie and Richard Dammann Youth Wing, named after the founders of FSW, and The Sperling Family Adult Wing. Through guided tours, guests were able to envision firsthand how the 18,000 square foot facility will come alive with activity once programming begins for the children, teens and older adults who will fill this bright and inviting space. Those in attendance, including many of the donors whose support enabled this project to succeed-- were impressed by the care that was taken in designing a facility to meet the unique needs of each population. “Our only regret,” remarked Susan B. Wayne, FSW’s President and CEO, “is that Pat Lanza, whose $1 million challenge grant enabled us to embark on this project, did not live to see her vision become reality.” Mrs. Lanza passed away in March 2014.

The Center, modeled after My Second Home, FSW’s award-winning intergenerational program in Mt. Kisco, will bring children, teens and seniors together at one site to participate in programs, share experiences and benefit from one another, just as they would in a family setting. Programming at the center will include adult day services with caregiver support, early childhood education, and a home base for FSW’s many youth development programs. Importantly, the Center will include spaces where the diverse age groups will interact during planned intergenerational activities as well as through informal encounters throughout the day. Together, children, teens and older adults will enjoy gardening, sharing meals, singing songs, cooking side-by-side, and partici-

pating in special events that allow them to break down age barriers and form lasting impressions and enrich each other’s lives.

Finding fun on a fixed income

Who qualifies for a Life Insurance Settlements or an Advanced Benefit Loan?

Go for the discounts Joining something like AARP opens the door to many moneysaving opportunities on not only fun stuff, but also necessities.

There’s an array of senior discounts out there, for everything from tires to phone plans to dining out, just waiting for you to take advantage of them. You can end up saving on travel, dining, and accommodations, which means that you don’t have to give up vacations.

Saving For A Rainy Day Saving on a fixed income is rather difficult, but it can be done if you end up saving significant money from trimming the fat out of your household budget. Should you be successful in slashing expenses, it’s a wise idea to take a portion of that money and put it aside as an emergency backup. So, even when an emergency expense does arise, it will have less of an impact on you.

The point that I am trying to get across is, today’s seniors are very different than what society shows us or what we perceive in our minds.

Seniors, who are looking for other financial sources to find income or raise fund do not have to be hospitalized, terminally ill or destitute.

There are many seniors who take advantage of our services that are in generally good health and financially sound.
