Shady Hills, FL - On March 10th, a call came in reporting a structure fire at 17852 Normandeau Street. Pasco County E 20 was the first to arrive and had smoke showing from the dwelling. Firefighters gained entry to the dwelling and immediately found a dog, which they brought outside.

BCES Adds Aerial Apparatus to Northeast End of County Winder, GA - Barrow County Emergency Services (BCES) has recently expanded its fleet of fire apparatus by adding a 78’ quintuple combination pumper (aka “quint”) to its inventory of rolling stock. This truck is equipped with a rear-mounted aerial JUMP TO FILE# ladder that can be 030921101 used to access multi-story buildings for rescue or direct elevated streams of water into fires for fire attack.

The apparatus serves five functions by providing a 1500 Gallons-per-Minute (GPM) pump, a 500-gallon water tank, fire hose, a 78’ aerial device, and an assortment of ground ladders.

It will go into service at Station 5 off of Hwy 211 in the northwest end of the county. Quint 5 will be replacing Engine 5 and will respond to all calls for service in the areas surrounding Station 5. The engine currently in service as Engine 5 will be reallocated to Station 3 in Bethlehem to serve as the first out fire apparatus there. Until now, calls requiring an aerial apparatus in the Braselton, Hoschton and Auburn areas were covered by Truck 7, a ladder truck stationed near Hwy 316 and Carl Bethlehem Road. Quint 5 has seating for four firefighters.

Having aerial apparatus on both ends of the county can help decrease response time and increase effectiveness by getting elevated water streams on big fires faster.

Quint 5 was built by E-One based in Ocala, Florida, and will have an approximate service life of 10 years. It is scheduled to be placed into service in early March 2021.

“We are excited to add this apparatus to the BCES fleet. This state-of-the-art truck will enhance the level of service we provide and will hopefully allow us to improve upon our ISO rating. I’d like to thank the citizens of Barrow County and the Board of Commissioners for approving this expenditure,” said BCES Chief Alan Shuman.

A push-in ceremony was held at Station 5 on March 8th. The push-in is an old fire service tradition that allows fire crews to push the apparatus into the bay for the first time to place it into service. The tradition goes back to the days of horse-drawn fire carts that had to be hand pushed-in to the bay backwards to be facing out for quicker responses. The push-in ceremony had members of Station 5 crews, county commissioners, the interim county manager, and other special guests.

Inmate Sets Fire at Law Enforcement Center in Bibb County

Bobby was instrumental in helping develop our department to the standard at which it operates today. During his tenure with the department he served as chaplain as well as physical fitness instructor.

To this day, many still remember the cadences he developed

to help instill a sense of camaraderie during his notoriously rigorous physical training regimens during their recruit classes. Bobby spent many years of his career at Roberts Station 2, located on South McDonough Road, where he was well known and loved by many in the community.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Barbara and their family during this difficult time.

Macon, GA - Macon-Bibb County Fire was alerted just after 12:30 P.M. on March 4th for a reported fire at the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center/Jail. Crews arrived and found smoke showing after an inmate set the fire. The fire was extinguished quickly and ventilation was set up. There was minor damage inside the jail, which was contained to a cabinet. One person was transported for smoke inhalation.

Construction Crew Breaks Hydrant in Savannah Savannah, GA - On March 23rd at 7:00 P.M., Chatham County Emergency Services were notified of an open hydrant. Upon arrival of E-13, it was discovered that a construction crew refilling their water tank broke the valve, preventing from the hydrant from being closed. Crew of E13 attempted to locate the street shutoff, but was unable to.

Savannah Water Authority had to shut down the main, but not before approximately 40,000-gallons flowed out of the hydrant into the rear yards of the apartments at Fords Pointe Apartments and Townhomes.

Shady Hills, FL - On March 10th, a call came in reporting a structure fire at 17852 Normandeau Street. Pasco County E 20 was the first to arrive and had smoke showing from the dwelling.

Firefighters gained entry to the dwelling and immediately found a dog, which they brought outside.

After giving CPR and O2, the dog

was successfully resuscitated.

Other firefighters continued searching the dwelling, where they found a male victim inside. They were able to get the male outside where they quickly began life-saving

measures, but the victim was unresponsive and not viable.

Firefighters made a final sweep and were able to knock the fire down a short time later. The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time.

This patch belongs to the Hallandale Beach Fire Department, located in Broward County, FL.

The Daytona Beach Shores Public Safety Department recently placed into service a 2020 Sutphen Monarch Heavy Duty Custom Pumper as Engine 77. This apparatus replaced a 2013 Ferrara 55’ Custom Arial as the first out apparatus. It is equipped with a 750-gallon water tank, a 1500-GMP Hale Pump, 8 discharges (4 midship, 2 rear & 2 front bumper) and a deck gun. Engine 77 is powered by a 450 HP Cummins engine and an Allison Gen 5 EVS 3000 transmission. Additional equipment includes a Brigade 360 camera system, Fire Research Corporation Spectra scene lights and a Whelen LED emergency lights and traffic advisor.

Tampa Police Mourn the Loss of Officer Jesse Madsen Tampa, FL - Tampa Police Dept. Master Patrol Officer Jesse Madsen was killed early Tuesday morning, March 9th, when his police vehicle was struck by a driver traveling the wrong way JUMP TO FILE# on Interstate 275.

Just before 1:00 030921117 A.M., Tampa Police began receiving calls about a white vehicle driving southbound in the northbound lanes of I275 at a high rate of speed and swerving through the lanes. Within one minute of the original call, the white sedan crashed into Officer Madsen's police vehicle between the Hillsborough and Sligh Avenue exits. The impact killed both Jesse and the driver of the white sedan, who has been identified as 25-year-old Joshua Daniel Montague of Golden, Colorado.

It is early in the investigation and currently unknown as to why and where the driver entered the interstate in the wrong direction of travel.

Jesse Madsen, 45, has a wife and three children: a 16-year-old son, a 12-year-old son, and a 10year-old daughter. He dedicated his life to the safety and service of others, first as a United States Marine combat veteran, then as a Police Officer in Lyndhorst, Ohio for two-and-a-half years, and an additional two-and-a-half years as a Police Officer in Shaker Heights, Ohio. For the past 16and-a-half years, Jesse has served

proudly as a Tampa Police Officer.

Jesse was a seven-time recipient of the Tampa Police Department's Life-Saving Award.

Jesse's badge, number 507, will be retired and his name will be etched for eternity into the Tampa Police Fallen Officers Memorial.

He is the 32nd Tampa Police Officer to make the ultimate sacrifice.

The Tampa Police Department will go into a seven-day period of mourning.

Shed Fire Spreads, Causes Brush Fire in Oneco Oneco, FL - Southern Manatee Fire District responded to a reported structure fire on 60th Ave., March 14th. On arrival, crews found a large shed in the rear of a duplex well involved.

The shed contained fertilizer, and dry conditions in the state caused the fire to spread and start a brush fire, along with a few trees. One civilian received minor burns and was treated on scene. The fire took out a power line running through the rear of the yard, knocking out power to the area.

Engine 88 at Orlando International Airport is a 2019 E-One Typhoon 2000-GPM pumper that carries 1000-gallons of water and 30-gallons of class B foam. Vehicle Collision Leads to Extrication on SR 40 in Ocala Ocala, FL - Ocala Fire Rescue (OFR) responded to reports of a vehicle accident with entrapment in the 5100 block of SR 40 at 12:47 A.M. on Tuesday, March 9th. OFR Engine 4, Rescue 4, Tower 1, Battalion Chief 11, and a Safety Officer were dispatched to the call. Upon arrival, crews encountered a two-vehicle collision involving a semi-truck and a sedan with heavy damage. The driver of the sedan was entrapped. Crews from Engine 4, Rescue 4 and Tower 1 stabilized the vehicle and began extrication. Within 16 minutes, the patient had been extricated and packaged for transport. The patient was trauma alerted to Ocala Regional Medical Center. No other injuries were reported. The Ocala Police Department and Marion County Fire Rescue also responded.

The combination of peppers, vinegar and butter create the perfect combination of heat, savory and sour. Your mouth starts to water and you cannot resist the temptation to order a dozen…or two. I am sure we have all been there. It is, to me, one of the best examples of flavors coming together to form the perfect sauce.

There is also a bleu cheese yogurt sauce which, when compared to traditional bleu cheese dressing, adds extra protein and lowers the calories. Makes 4 burgers Ingredients: Chicken Patties: 1 lb. Ground Chicken 1 Carrot, peeled/rough chopped 1 Celery Stalk, rough chopped ½ Yellow Onion, rough chopped 1 Egg ¼ Cup Buffalo Sauce 1 Cup Breadcrumbs Buffalo Sauce: 1 Cup Hot Sauce 3 Tbsp. Butter, cubed Bleu Cheese Yogurt Sauce: 1 Cup Plain Greek Yogurt ½ Cup Crumbled Bleu Cheese 1 tsp. Worcestershire 1 tsp. Garlic Powder 1 tsp. Lemon Juice Salt/Pepper to taste

Procedure: -For the buffalo sauce: Heat hot sauce in a small saucepan over low heat. When the sauce starts to simmer, add the butter and stir until combined. Set aside to cool.

The roots of Buffalo sauce and in particular, the Buffalo wing, are rooted in myth and lore. The most popular, and arguably most true, is that they were born out of necessity in 1964 at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, NY. A place which I have yet to visit, but will, hopefully, before I kick the bucket. Now at this point you are probably assuming this is a recipe for Buffalo wings.

Unfortunately it is not, but it is however a recipe for something inspired by the almighty wing. There are times when I absolutely crave those familiar flavors but would rather not go through the trouble of deep frying in my home or firehouse. -For the chicken burgers: Add the carrots, celery and onion to a food processor and buzz until minced (mince with a knife if needed). Sauté the carrot mixture in a sauté pan with a drizzle of EVOO and a pinch of salt until soft, 2-4 minutes. Set aside to cool.

-In a large bowl, combine the cooled carrot mixture, egg and ¼ cup of the cooled Buffalo sauce. Stir until combined. Add the ground chicken, and mix with your hands just until combined. Add the bread crumb and mix in gently with your hands. Do not overwork

the mixture or it will toughen up the burgers. Form 4 equal sized burger patties, place on a sheet pan. IMPORTANT: refrigerate for 10-20 minutes to allow burgers to set up.

-Heat up a cast iron pan, sauté pan or grill on medium heat. Add a drizzle of EVOO and cook burgers 4-5 minutes on one side without moving. Flip and cook an additional 4-5 minutes or until the internal temperature reads 165°F. -Assemble burgers on lettuce “buns”, drizzle with Buffalo sauce, a dollop of Bleu cheese sauce and chives.

Commercial Structure Fire in DeFuniak Springs Destroys Multiple Cars DeFuniak Springs, FL - On February 10th, a fire at a large auto body collision and repair shop in DeFuniak Springs taxed local resources as Florida firefighters tackled the blaze.

Firemen from the City of DeFuniak Springs Fire Department had a one minute response to onscene time and encountered heavy black smoke coming from sally port doors located on the 'Delta' side of the structure. Initial crews set up for an aggressive interior attack deploying multiple hand lines, attempting to locate the fire and isolate further damage throughout the structure. Employees on scene confirmed with command that all occupants had exited the structure and were accounted for, and relayed that the fire had ignited during welding operations in the rear of the structure.

While conducting interior operations, a 30-gallon LPG tank off a forklift exploded and sent the operation into a defensive mode.

Crews responding from Walton County Sheriff's Fire-Rescue set up their newly in-service Tower Ladder and assisted with aerial operations. Crews continued battling the blaze until a transition could be made back to interior operations, where the fire was extinguished, and further investigation was conducted.

A total of eight customer vehicles were totaled as a result of the blaze, as well as extensive damage throughout the structure. Volunteers from local the agencies of Liberty & Argyle Fire Districts also responded to the incident and provided valuable manpower. Fire Chief Ross Sheffield confirmed that the fire was determined to be accidental in nature.

This is a soft cover book measuring 6" x 9", with 250 pages. It has 22 chapters plus a prologue and an epilogue. It is a great book about horrific stories and experiences! The thing that makes this book different than most books about fires is that the author, his family and his house survived this fire, the worst in L.A. history, and the chapters are about residents, businessmen and others and what their experiences were during this period, which started on November 8th of 2018.

You will get a perception of what they endured and how the fire was handled by the firefighting agencies who battled it. You will read about horror, tragedy, heroism and perseverance. You will come to know that not everyone who lives in the Malibu areas are wealthy people, in fact it is the opposite. You will read however how some celebrities, such as Nick Nolte, lost his house while he was filming a movie in Europe! You’ll read about the organization of Engine 271 and the story behind that.

You will read about to what extreme homeowners will go to protect their property, especially when tall trees of types prone to fast burning surround them and how far embers can travel and spread flames. You will read about death and human interest stories, especially when it came to animals, both as pets and those running free. Just about all of these chapters cover these experiences compiled through interviews by the author who happens to be a writer.

He himself put in countless hours trying to help others in all kinds of ways.

There is one chapter where the fire department tries to address questions and complaints from displaced residents and people devastated by this fire. I cannot write enough about these stories in the limited space that I have, but each chapter tells a story that the reader will empathize with and there are no cookie cutter stories. When I was on the job I expected to go to fires and we took many as routine.

But many times I did empathize and thought how devastated and depressed I would be if the fire I was at was my own home! Each chapter is separate in itself and this book is worth reading!

Multiple Departments Respond to Tractor Fire in Chattahoochee Chattahoochee, FL - On March 11th at 2:54 P.M., the Mount Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched with several other agencies to a reported tractor fire in the 5300 block of Blue Star Highway.

Upon arrival, first due personnel found a fully involved tractor in close proximity to an active burn pile. Firefighters from the City of Chattahoochee and Mount Pleasant provided the initial attack on the fire, which had escaped from the pile burn to the surrounding brush and caused the tractor to catch fire.

The initial attack was able to stop the spread of the brush fire and keep it contained so that efforts could be focused on extinguishing the tractor.

The property owner reported that they were clearing some land and burning the yard debris and sev-

eral tree logs. At some point things were going well and the crew decided to step away for a quick break, during which time the wind had picked up. Upon their return they found that the pile burn had escaped, caught the surrounding brush on fire and ultimately catching the tractor on fire. There were two other piles burning on the property and due to the windy conditions those piles were extinguished.

Firefighters from Mount Pleasant, City of Chattahoochee, City of Gretna, City of Quincy and the Florida Forest Service responded to this incident.

Love, love, love Chaplain's Corner Didymus McHugh

For the past 12 months, we have been going through some major events. We have started with the covid virus; that one event can be a challenge in itself.

Add to it the demonstrations that we have had for various civil unrest. Add to that a very interesting and emotional presidential election. Also child, elder, domestic and other abuse has been on the rise, and so has been depression and suicide.

Do you remember the old game with a camel? On a camel there were two bags and the object was to see how many straws that you can put into the bags and then the camel would finally break the back.

Each one of us has our own packs, on our figurative backs.

There is only so much that we can take and I have been seeing the kicking the dog scenario. Some people may be getting frustrated from being confined in the house or apartment, people’s employment may be in jeopardy or they may have challenges dealing with the new technology or procedures, each person has some of the common stress and some think that they are the only person going through their challenges.

Well, people may be looking for an outlet, no matter what. The person may not know how to constructively release stress, so they may look for the figurative dog to kick. They may know or feel that the dog will not do or say anything back to them.

As you have been seeing, we are going through so much together. People have been lashing out on one another, when they would never have even thought of it before. People are destroying things, when they would never have done anything like that in the times before this pandemic.

I am pretty sure that most religions promote loving one another and helping one another. So how can we reduce a lot of the stuff that’s going on? How about putting yourself in the other people’s shoes? How about talking with the other person and not just shouting offensive things? How about showing concern for those hurting or looking for a voice?

I still believe that people are good and the heart to care for one another is there. Many of us

would not do the work that we do or do outreach in the community, if we did not care for people.

During the movie “Independence Day”, Judd Hirsh refers to John Lennon, from the Beatles, where John Lennon wrote the song “all you need is love”, and that John was a very smart man. If we loved one another, would we attack each other? Would we destroy property? Would we deface property? This is not expressions of love. How about coming together with respect and voice your opinions and listen to the other persons opinion? Wow, there is the difference. Many people want to voice their opinion PERIOD. They want to voice their opinion but nobody else in this world matters but them.

I listen to many people who do not believe what I believe. They may not think the way that I do. I may not think the way that they do. We still get along.

In the Bible, Jesus was asked what the greatest law was. Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’

This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

I ask you to please look at those verses. It says “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Does anyone see any qualifiers? Does it state that they have to be the same color? Same religion? Same sexual orientation? From the same country? What other qualifiers do you want to put up? It says “Love your neighbor as yourself”, pretty simple to me.

How many of you have spoken to strangers in your life? Everyone has. It is through talking with and getting to know strangers that we develop friendships and may get a spouse out of it or a best friend.

I know that it sounds so simple but let me ask you, how easy is it for you to love your family? You may have that one person that is really difficult or gets on your nerves, but you are still there for them. So, try the same thing for someone who is not your relative.

We can not only show love for someone in word but also as we talk with them. Someone I was speaking to express how they were talking to someone. I heard the words that they were using and I understand that they were frustrated, but I heard words that did not express love.

Many of us will recognize parts of First Corinthians chapter 13, especially during wedding ceremonies:

"If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing." Let the phrase "if I do not have love, I am nothing" sit with you for a while. How many people actually have love, especially for those who are not within your inner circle? Do you show love to strangers or your enemies? Sure, it is easier to love people that look like us, talk like us, or have some of the same interests but do we love people who are not like us. Are we willing to love people who think differently than we do? Are we willing to love people of different occupations? Other religions?

"Love is patient, love is kind.

It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres." These phrases give us something to think about and also to measure our love by. How are we and society at loving, according to this teaching?

Are you willing to forgive? Do you sit there with a book and keep track of how many times someone has messed up, according to your rules? This action only creates more bitterness. If you need something to keep track of, keep track of the good that people have done, what people do for you without asking, or when people give you a hug. We should not be watching to make sure that the scales are balanced. Do you think this might be where the phrase "I'll get even with you" comes from? Throw away the scales, the records or whatever and just care for people.

I can never get even with all those who have showed me encouragement, kindness, caring, compassion, or brought me joy. I can only try to pay it forward and put all that into people that I experience each day. We never know what kind words or actions will do to a person's day.

Please continue to show that you care for all. Also remember that you can raise someone up or tear them down with your tongue.

BSFR Extricates Three from Single-Vehicle Rollover Unincorporated Broward County, FL - Three patients were transported on February 23rd from a car accident on US 27 in Unincorporated Broward County. A call for service was received just before JUMP TO FILE# 8:00 A.M. for a sin- 022321105 gle-vehicle accident involving a vehicle that rolled over on the interstate.

Units from Everglades and Weston, as well as Technical Rescue and Air Rescue assets were deployed. At the conclusion of the incident, three trauma alerts were transported to Broward Health in Ft. Lauderdale, one by air.

All occupants suffered multiple trauma injuries as a result of the accident, but are expected to survive.
