New Port Richey, FL - On October 4th, firefighters responded to a severe car crash with one person trapped. When firefighters arrived at the intersection of State Road 54 and Trophy Blvd. in New Port Richey, they reported a car suspended over a steel handrail and ditch.

Pooler Fire Rescue recently placed into service a 1999 Kenworth T800/4-Guys apparatus as Tender 61. This tender was refurbished and updated by Company Two Fire before delivery. Tender 61 has a 1000-GPM Waterous pump and a 3000-gallon water tank. It is configured with two crosslays and a rear dump valve.

Working Mobile Home Fire in Warner Robins Warner Robins, GA - On September 18th, Houston County 911 Communications Center dual dispatched City of Warner Robins Fire and Houston County Fire to a confirmed structure fire in the 100 block of Virginia Dare Drive. WRFD Engine 5 arrived on scene with a working mobile home on fire. WRFD Engine 3 arrived second and assisted in establishing water supply, laying five inches across Booth Road to the fire scene. Houston County Fire arrived and assisted with fire attack. The fire is under investigation and no injuries were reported. HoCo fire remained on scene for overhaul and to assist the Fire Investigator.

Vehicle Teeters on Other Following MVA in Warner Robins

Warner Robins, GA - On the afternoon of September 9th, Warner Robins Fire Department Engine 5 and Houston Healthcare EMS were alerted to the intersection of Russell Parkway and South Davis Drive for a motor vehicle accident involving three vehicles. WRPD and Engine 5 arrived and found one vehicle on top of another with entrapment and immediately requested Engine 1 to assist. EMS requested an additional ambulance due to several injuries. The patient was extricated and EMS transported them to HMC.

Fire Investigations Office Opens in Paulding County Dallas, GA - Paulding County Fire & Rescue announced on September 22nd that it has opened an office of Fire Investigations. This new division will be responsible for investigating a variety of incidents including structure fires, explosions, and burn injuries.

Captain Chris Kendrick, an 18year veteran of the Department, has been promoted to Chief Fire Inspector. In his new role, Chief Kendrick is tasked with investigating fire origin & cause determination, scene documentation, witness interviews, investigation of explosions, hazardous materials incidents, interfacing with the Georgia Bureau of Investigations and its Crime Lab as well as Insurance companies, and providing expert testimony in criminal court during arson cases.

“Paulding County continues to grow in population and density. With that growth we’ve experienced a significant increase in the number of

“Until today PCFD has been investigating the cause & origin of structure fires using our own certified Investigators who also serve in other roles within the Department.

With over 16,000 emergency responses last year and growing, our call volume necessitates dedicated Investigation resources. Our new Fire Investigations office, under Chief Kendrick’s leadership, allows us to focus attention on this extremely important job - which often extends beyond our Department to include law enforcement and the court system.”

Texas: Leroy Lucio, 62 Rank: Captain Incident Date: June 17, 2020 Death Date: July 20, 2020 Fire Department: Houston Fire Department Initial Summary: On July 20, 2020, Captain Leroy Lucio was battling the COVID-19 virus at a local hospital in San Antonio, TX, when he passed away. Captain Lucio contracted the virus from exposure to COVID-19 in the workplace.

Texas: Gerardo "Jerry" Pacheco, 50 Rank: Firefighter/Paramedic Incident Date: July 18, 2020 Death Date: August 3, 2020 Fire Department: Houston Fire Department Initial Summary: On August 3, 2020, Firefighter/Paramedic Gerardo “Jerry” Pacheco was battling COVID-19 when he passed away. Firefighter/Paramedic Pacheco contracted the virus from exposure to COVID-19 in the workplace.

Michigan: Steven Splan, 46 Rank: Sergeant Incident Date: August 2, 2020 Death Date: August 2, 2020 Fire Department: Bloomfield Hills Department of Public Safety Initial Summary: On August 2, 2020, Sergeant Steven Splan was on fire duty and, at approximately 1200hrs, helped to remove a tree blocking a roadway. Sergeant Splan, later in the evening during patrol, went on a meal break to the public safety building, where he was found unresponsive in the department kitchen. CPR was immediately performed and he was taken to the local hospital where he was pronounced deceased from an apparent heart attack late in the evening on August 2, 2020.

New York: Alec Tannenbaum, 29 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: August 4, 2020

Death Date: August 4, 2020 Fire Department: Vails Gate Fire Department Initial Summary: Firefighter Alec Tannenbaum completed an on-duty shift Tuesday with the West Point Fire Department before responding to numerous storm-related alarms as a member of the Vails Gate Fire Department. Firefighter Tannenbaum was found unresponsive in his home late Tuesday, August 4, 2020. He was immediately transported to St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased from an apparent heart attack.

Florida: Anthony Craig "Tony" Christensen, 55 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: June 26, 2020 Death Date: August 4, 2020 Fire Department: City of Naples Fire-Rescue Initial Summary: Firefighters from the City of Naples Fire-Rescue responded to a medical emergency at a nursing home. The patient was exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 and results were received the next day that showed the patient was positive for the virus. Firefighter Anthony Craig “Tony” Christensen did not respond to this call. However, he was in direct contact with fellow firefighters who had been exposed to the virus from the nursing home. He subsequently contracted COVID-19 and passed away on Tuesday, August 4, 2020.

Hawaii: Eric Hayashi, 49 Rank: Fire Equipment Operator Incident Date: August 8, 2020 Death Date: August 8, 2020 Fire Department: Hawaii Fire Department Initial Summary: On Saturday, August 8, 2020, Fire Equipment Operator Eric Hayashi responded to an EMS call at a residence. While at the scene, Fire Equipment Operator Hayashi experienced a medical emergency. He was immediately taken to the Hilo Medical Center where he passed away a short time later from an apparent heart attack.

Savannah Launches COVID Resource Team Savannah, GA - Savannah has recently begun a pilot program called The COVID Resource Team to enforce the city’s mask order. The two dozen marshals patrol the city, including Forsyth Park, to educate the public and to enforce the mask mandate, handing out masks for those who don’t have them.

The pilot program is being backed by Savannah’s Office of Special Events, Film and Tourism.

Corona Truck Rolls Over in Warner Robins Warner Robins, GA - On September 1st, Warner Robins Fire Department Engine 3 and Brush 1, along with Houston Healthcare EMS, were alerted to the intersection of Russell Parkway at Carl Vinson Road for an SUV and large box truck that collided at the intersection. Engine 3 arrived with WRPD to find the box truck on its side over the guardrail. All the materials were contained in the beverage delivery truck. The roadway was blocked in the area of the intersection for an extended period of time for cleanup and removal.

Cooler autumn weather is the perfect time for chili; and while slow cookers are certainly popular when it comes to chili, nothing beats cooking it in a pot on the stove top so the aromas fill the firehouse. I mean, if chili ever had a “season” it most certainly is now.

This dish is the quintessential fire-

house meal; it’s cheap, flavorful and can feed a crowd. Every year, firehouses all over the country have chili cookoffs, often resulting in heated competitions amongst local companies. See what I did there? And ask any firehouse chef, there are a million and one ways to make it and everyone has the best recipe. Most chili recipes are your standard beef, tomato and chile based, which is absolutely delicious and easily the most popular way to make it. But sometimes we crave variety or just something different to keep things interesting, and this Chipotle-Turkey Chili is the perfect answer to that. Ground

turkey is a great ingredient to use if you are looking to lighten up a dish. It has much less calories than beef, but still adds a ton of protein to help fill up the crew. But with this leaner meat also comes less flavor. With that being said, turkey is a blank canvas for other flavors like cumin, coriander and chipotle.

Garnishing with avocado adds some extra healthy fat and cilantro is the perfect ingredient to brighten it up. So if you are looking for something different to make at the firehouse, but still keep everyone happy...look no further!

CHIPOTLE-TURKEY CHILI Serves 4

Ingredients:

1 lb. Ground Turkey 1 Small Carrot, rough chopped 1 Celery, rough chopped 1 Medium Onion, rough chopped (½ reserved for garnish) 1 Garlic Clove 1 Bell Pepper, seeded and chopped 2 - 14 oz. Cans Chopped Tomatoes (preferably fireroasted) 2 - 14 oz. Cans Black Beans, drained Adobo Sauce from can of Chipotle Peppers, to taste 1 tsp. Cumin 1 tsp. Paprika 1 tsp. Coriander 1 tsp. Dried Oregano 1 tsp. Chili Powder Salt, to taste Black Pepper, to taste EVOO Garnish (Optional): 1 Avocado, chopped 1 Lime, cut into wedges 1 Jalapeno, sliced Chopped Raw Onion Handful of Fresh Cilantro, chopped

*Note: I am a firm believer that no pot of chili is the same when it comes to seasonings.

Please taste yours and adjust it according to your liking.

Procedure:

-In a food processor, combine the carrot, celery, ½ of the onion and garlic. Pulse into a paste. If you do not have a food processor, just finely mince them all together. This is your sofrito mixture.

-In a large stock pot over medium heat, add enough EVOO to cover the bottom of pot. When the oil is shimmering, add your ground turkey.

Do NOT touch the turkey now until it starts to brown. At this point, season with a generous pinch of salt. Flip the turkey over and brown the other side.

Add your sofrito mixture and start to break up the turkey.

Cook, stirring frequently until mixture just starts to get some color.

-Add the dried spices, stir until fragrant. Now add the chopped tomatoes and stir to combine.

AJ FUSCO

-Add the bell pepper and 1 can of black beans. Bring to a simmer. Puree the other can of black beans in a food processor and add to the pot. This step is optional but adds body to the chili. If you don’t have a food processor you can just mash them up with a fork.

After about 10 minutes or so, taste and adjust and seasonings/spices. At this point, add the chipotle a little at a time.

Taste and adjust.

-Continue cooking for 20-30 minutes. Taste and adjust seasoning. Serve with avocado, cilantro, chopped onion and lime wedge.

Five Ocala Fire Rescue Members Recognized as Hometown Heroes Ocala, FL - Five Ocala Fire Rescue (OFR) members were honored on October 6th at Fire Station 1 (320 NE 8th Ave.) during an intimate presentation by Hires-Baxley, in celebration of the 3rd Annual Hometown Heroes awards.

One Firefighter, two Fire Equipment JUMP TO FILE# Operators (FEOs), 100720105 and two Captains were recognized for efforts that proved invaluable in resolving each of the emergencies to which they responded.

-Firefighter Shantelle Nichols was recognized for his courageous actions searching for occupants in a home threatened by flames from a vacant structure on fire next door, despite being offduty. His immediate action allowed crews to focus on containing the fire to the structure of origin. Firefighter Nichols not only assisted his teammates before their arrival, but he also remained on scene to operate a fire hose and help as needed, demonstrating an absolute commitment to his profession and community.

-Captain Jesse Blaire was recognized for his integral role in OFR's fight against COVID-19.

Proposing a strike team dedicated to Coronavirus responses, Captain Blaire’s trailblazing methods proved vital in decreasing exposures to the virus for citizens and first responders alike.

-Captain John Toms, FEO Ryan Brady, and FEO Jagger Maguire were recognized for their life-saving actions during an apartment structure fire. Upon arrival at a fire scene, this crew learned that a senior was unaccounted for. As they prepared to search the building billowing with smoke, a second man was spotted attempting to evacuate through a second-floor window.

FEOs Brady and Maguire laddered the window to help bring the man down safely. Meanwhile, Captain Toms searched the firstfloor apartment units for the senior. Firefighter Toms located, woke, and guided the senior through the heavy smoke and out of the building. For actions that helped save two lives Captain Toms, FEO Brady, and FEO Maguire each received Act of Valor Awards.

“We are overjoyed for each of the team members recognized today,” said Public Information Officer Ashley Lopez. “Because we know that they would repeat their actions without hesitation, time, and time again.”

Tamarac, FL - On August 4th, Tamarac Plans Examiner Rebecca Geimer assumed the role of Secretary for the Fire Inspectors Association of Broward County (FIABC). This association represents community risk reduction personnel in Broward County, providing training to their membership, hosting annual recognition awards and events and more. Geimer has been with the City of Tamarac since 2005 and with the Community Risk Reduction division since 2015.

Not only was Geimer the recipient of the Fire Inspector of the Year Award in 2018 from the FIABC, she was also named Fire Inspector of the Year in 2019 from the Florida Fire Chiefs Association (FFCA). She is a self-starting, motivated and dedicated individual who is a recognized professional within her field. We are very confident she will do great in her new role and honored to support her!

Pasco County Fire Rescue Merges with Zephyrhills Fire Pasco County, FL - It's an honor to announce the finalization of the merger between Zephyrhills Fire and Pasco County Fire Rescue.

The morning of September 28th marked the switch from Zephyrhills Fire Rescue to Pasco County Fire Rescue. Over the last few months, there has been a lot going on behind the scenes. Firefighters have trained on new protocols, facilities, and vehicles changed from the city to the county, and I.T. has been busy changing over computer and radio systems.

JUMP TO FILE #101220118 We recognize the contributions that Zephyrhills Fire gave to their community for over 100 years and thank Zephyrhills residents for their trust in Pasco County Fire Rescue. Starting as an all-volunteer department, ZFD saw a large amount of growth over the years.

September 28th marks a new chapter in the city's history.

Zephyrhills' residents now have increased staffing levels in their fire stations, and two ambu-

lances stationed inside the city limits. The increased staffing will help with response times inside Zephyrhills and response times on the East side of Pasco County.

Pasco County Fire Rescue feels honored to carry on the esteemed reputation and service level to Zephyrhills residents. Thank you to everyone who worked tireless hours to ensure the merger of our departments went smoothly. We are #PascoProud to welcome our new family members to Pasco County Fire Rescue!

Pasco County Fire Rescue Extricates One from Suspended Car New Port Richey, FL - On October 4th, firefighters responded to a severe car crash with one person trapped. When firefighters arrived at the intersection of State Road 54 and Trophy Blvd. in New Port Richey, they reported a car suspended over a steel handrail and ditch. Firefighters stabilized the vehicle and carefully extricated the patient inside. It took firefighters an extended period to free the patient due to the location of the car. Thankfully, the driver of the car only suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local area hospital.

Plantation, FL - EMS Battalion Chief Ezra Lubow has been selected to head the Plantation Fire Department’s EMS Division as its new Division Chief, Fire Chief Donald Todd announced on October 8th.

Lubow is a 26year veteran of the JUMP TO FILE# Department who 102220103 worked his way from volunteer firefighter to a full time paramedic with the EMS Division.

In 2010 he was promoted to Captain within the Division responsible for supervising “A” shift. In 2016 he was promoted to Battalion Chief.

Ezra joined the fire department in 1994 as a volunteer firefighter. In 1997 he left the volunteers and became a full time employee as a paramedic with the EMS Division.

Lubow also serves as the Department’s Health and Safety and Infection Control Officer. This year he was tasked by Mayor Stoner to coordinate the City’s response to the Covid crisis.

He also recently developed and implemented a Podcast to help keep Plantation residents informed about the Coronavirus and the City’s activities regarding the response.

Lubow also operates his own Podcast entitled “A Paramedic’s World” which can be found on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Podcasts. He holds a

Every year, Daytona Beach Firefighters swap out their usual uniform shirts for pink ones. For the month of October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, firefighters show their support for Breast Cancer awareness and research.

For the first time in 68 years, the Daytona Beach Fire Department has a full fleet of engines that are no older than 5-years-old. With the exception of their Quint, the other six fire trucks that staff six of their seven stations are all manufactured by E-ONE. Engine 4 and Engine 6 are the newest trucks, going into service at the end of September 2020.

Pasco County Fire Rescue Pulls Teen from Storm Drain

New Port Richey, FL - On October 7th, Pasco County Fire Rescue responded to a 911 call on Pemberton Dr. in New Port Richey from a passerby after a teen was found inside a storm drain. Firefighters arrived at the scene to find the teenager in waist-deep water. The teenager was walking home from the bus stop when she dropped her cell phone in a storm drain. The teen removed a manhole cover and entered to recover her cell phone. After entering the manhole, she realized she was stuck, and a passerby called for help.

The teen was in the drain for approximately an hour before help was called. Firefighters were able to extricate the teen from the storm drain, cleaned her off, checked the drain for hazardous gasses, and then turned the teen over to her parents. We are thankful there were no injuries.

Deland, FL - Crews with Volusia County Fire Rescue (VCFR) recently participated in a "Parade of Support" dedicated to a citizen currently fighting a serious illness. Three VCFR vehicles drove in the parade along with about 20 vehicles owned by local residents. It was an honor to show support to the patient and her family. The family can rest easily knowing that if assistance is needed for this patient in District 41's area, VCFR stands ready to help.

OCALA FIRE RESCUE

One Transported After Collision in Ocala

Ocala, FL - Ocala Fire Rescue responded to a collision involving three vehicles on NE 36th Avenue and Seventh Street on October 23rd. At 4:23 P.M., Engine 2 and Rescue 2 were dispatched to the scene of a vehicle accident involving three vehicles: a blue pickup truck, a red pickup truck, and a gold SUV. Units arrived to find the blue pickup truck on its roof.

The driver, and sole occupant of the blue pickup truck, kicked through the rear window of the vehicle, self-extricating prior to units' arrival. The driver was transported to the hospital.

Neither the occupants of the gold SUV (two adults and a dog), nor those in the red pickup truck (two adults) had injuries to report. Ocala Police Department and Marion County Fire Rescue also responded.

On October 8th, Melrose firefighters trained with deputies from the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office Marine Operations/Underwater Recovery Team (MOURT) and soldiers from Florida Army National Guard CBRNE Enhanced Response Force Package (CERF-P) on water rescue operations in Lake Santa Fe in Melrose, FL. During this joint training evolution each team provided a brief on team equipment, training & SOP’s that was followed up with a water rescue scenario that involved all three teams. Melrose firefighters were responsible for performing an initial water rescue of a survivor and marking the area of a simulated boating accident. Alachua County Sheriff’s Office deployed the dive team members using boats from CEFR-P and the MOURT team. Multiple diver insertions were performed during the training event, which lasted for about three hours.

The crew of Station 15 in Daytona Beach trains using an inflatable shelter for the purpose of decontamination. Volusia County Fire Rescue's Hazardous Materials Team (HazMat) is based out of Station 15.

This is the final disk of the five DVD set and features Rescue 5 stationed in the Borough of Staten Island. The footage takes place in 1997 when they were assigned a Mack MR/Saulsbury rescue truck with a walk-in body in which four crew members suited up and sat during responses. Their current res-

cue trucks have non-walk-in bodies and the entire crew rides in the cab.

This DVD is 45 minutes rather than the others, which were 60 minutes. This coverage is different than the other four in the following respects: there is no introduction by any member of the company and there are no interviews or training sessions with specialized equipment. There is also no narration by the videographer. All that can be heard is radio traffic, which is not very audible in most cases. There is also no indication of what is burning, nor the date, box number or the number of alarms. On the back of the jacket of the set is a brief explanation of what is within and two third alarm fires are mentioned.

The fires are spectacular! One is in an attached two story building which could be a dwelling, offices or commercial establishments. Take your pick! The buildings are fully involved with exposures being threatened. Tower ladder streams and some handlines operate and have their work cut out for them.

The second fire appears to be in what might be a private property with several expensive dwellings.

The main fire is in the middle and two large buildings are exposed and burning. It is unclear what is burning in the middle. There is a construction shovel on the property which suggests that there was work in progress and the main fire may have been a building under construction because not much is left of it. Tower Ladder 77 comes in off the street and goes to work with its platform stream. Rescue 5 is heavily engaged in both of these fires, but a videographer would never be able to get close enough to view them.

Other parts of this DVD involve riding along with the crew while they gear up during responses. The DVD is also dedicated to a firefighter from the company who lost his life and part of the proceeds will help his family. This footage is a fitting way to bring to a close a salute to New York City rescues!

Hudson Lightning Strike Causes Severe Damage to Home

Hudson, FL - It was a startling morning on September 18th as residents of the Wedgewood Condo Community feared an explosion happened overnight. When Firefighters arrived on the scene, units reported a condo with a destroyed chimney and debris in the front yard. Crews investigated and found the damage to be from a lightning strike that happened during the overnight hours. Firefighters helped clear the home of hazards, and thankfully there were no injuries reported. The owners weren’t home at the time of the strike, and homeowners worked with their insurance company to repair the home.

Daytona Firefighters Rescue Multiple Pets from House Fire

Daytona, FL - On October 2nd, as the resident of the house sat outside crying and concerned for the pets that she was not able to locate before evacuating her house that was on fire, Daytona Beach Firefighters quickly worked to locate the beloved animals through thick smoke and minimal visibility while at the same time trying to minimize the damage the fire was causing. During the search of the large, two-story house, firefighters were able to find the two cats, a cage of pet rats, and the dog, Lola. Firefighters carried the scared the dog through the house and outside to be reunited with its owner in the street. The cause of the fire was due to mechanical failure of the A/C unit.

Chattanooga Firefighters Extricate Driver from Partially Submerged Vehicle

Chattanooga, TN - Chattanooga FD Squad 19 and Engine 22 responded to a car in a ditch on Grubb Road with the driver trapped at 6:00 A.M. on Sunday, October 11th. Upon arrival, Squad 19 reported that the car was upside down and partially submerged. The driver was able to move inside the vehicle and keep their head out of the water. Firefighters were quickly able to remove the door and help the driver out of the car.

There were no significant injuries.
