The car was no match as the impact of the truck crushed the driver side of the car and dragged the car down the ditch

Wrights Corners uses Jaws of Life Wrights Corners Volunteer Fire and Rescue trains hard for the real thing and today it came into play. On April 26, Wrights Corners responded to a bicyclist who was hit by a car then the car ended up on top of the person.

The elite rescue team quickly deployed the air bags to remove the victim. They had barely returned when the tones went off for a serious accident at Sunset and Leete Road in the Town of Lockport.

Callers reported a tractor trailer struck a vehicle and the driver of the car was trapped.

almost completely run over by a full size tractor trailer with the female driver pinned inside.

Wrights Corners had Mercy Flight head right to the scene. Rescue and EMS crews were on scene within a few minutes. EMS crews quickly entered the vehicle to stabilize the driver. Rescue crews used cribbing to secure the car while the jaws team got the gear hooked up and running. A ready line was also charged just in case.

Rural Metro was on scene to

assist Wrights Corners in providing care for the patient. Sgt. Kevin Lacicero requested the department’s CIS and AIU. As Wrights Corners cared for the victim, Mercy Flight landed a few hundred feet north of the accident. Their medics provided ALS before loading the female patient.

One Wright's Corner firefighter and rescue member advised, “that this is why they drill so hard, so when we get scene like this, it all comes together. Today it did. All members did what they were trained to do and did it well.”

Big truck rescue training held in Bristol Bristol, NY - On April 20 and 21, firefighters from across western and central New York took part in a big truck rescue training class at the Bristol Volunteer Fire Department in Ontario County. Over forty emergency responders were given classroom instruction and hands on training working with tow company operators in dealing with incidents involving large vehicles.

Live burn drill for Vails Gate On Sunday, May 5th, the Vails Gate Fire Department held an all day live burn drill. It was conducted on a house slated to be torn down and located next to the Purple Heart Hall of Honor on Temple Hill Road.

According to Chief Chris Sweeney,"firefighters conducted

seven different live evolutions.

During each evolution, multiple crews coordinated operations involving hose line advancement, search and removal and ventilation.

All evolutions were conducted with an emphasis on safety and followed applicable standards."

In addition to over thirty Vails Gate members, New Windsor EMS stood by during the drill with an ambulance and paramedic unit.

Wherever we look, devastation still lingers from Hurricane Sandy’s wrath. Whether it was from the rising and brutal waters, to the fires, it consumed many. The Roxbury Fire Department (which is near Breezy Point) struggled to fight fires that eventually destroyed over 120 neighboring homes.

Devastated by their own water damage to their firehouse, equipment and vehicles from the storm, the Roxbury Volunteer Fire Department was one of the first outfits to respond to the fire after waiting for the water in their firehouse to recede enough so they could get to their vehicles and equipment.

This dedication and commitment resonated to a little village in upstate New York, with a fire department with the same name, Roxbury Fire Department, Roxbury, NY. Hoping to help in some way, this fire department joined with neighboring Grand Gorge Fire Department and held a chicken barbecue on January 19th to raise funds

to help with the recovery efforts of their same-name department near Breezy Point.

On April 20th, members from both upstate fire departments traveled to visit their downstate neighbors to present them with a check in the amount of $1,000. These members were Roxbury Fire Department Larry DeMaio, Rich Lalosh, & Marty Finch; Grand Gorge Fire Department Tom Murray, Bill Schryver, and DJ Speenburgh.

The members were provided a first-hand look at the devastation and destruction from both the fire and the water, which still remains.

Members of these communities continue to rebuild and stay strong during the aftermath of terrible destruction by Mother Nature.

Cheektowaga, NY. On April 2nd at 9:30 p.m., Doyle Hose Company's 1 and 2 were dispatched to a reported head on MVA at the intersection of Harlem JUMP TO FILE # Rd and Clinton St. 042613109 Doyle 2-9-1 arrived on scene and advised of a two car MVA with one rollover and one entrapment.

The driver of the rollover was able to crawl out of the car. The driver of the second car had to be extricated using the Hurst tool, which was complete in 16 minutes.

Driver number one received no injuries. Driver number two was transported via Rural Metro Ambulance to the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo with non-life threatening injuries.

House fire in Rochester Rochester, NY - The Rochester Fire Department (Group 4) started their shift on April 22nd with a working fire on Ketchum St. Calls to 911 reported a fire in the house with an open line. The first due units reported light smoke showing and further reported a working fire. The converted duplex received smoke damage and some extension to the second floor according to Battalion One Chief Tom May. The fire was accidental and likely started from smoking. No injuries were reported, but one adult and two children were displaced as the home was uninhabitable.

Three dogs removed from raging home Buffalo firefighters of the 3rd Battalion 1st Platoon were called out early Thursday morning, May 2nd, to battle a blaze at 774-776 E.Eagle St. on Buffalo's East Side. Firefighters used a ladder pipe, a tower ladder and multiple two and a half and one and three quarter inch hand lines.

The blaze started in 774 E. Eagle and quickly spread to 776 E. Eagle. Three dogs were re-

moved from the inferno. A total of five adults and four children were displaced from both structures.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The call which came in around 3:15 a.m. was reported to have been in the dining room of 774 E. Eagle St. No in-

juries of the occupants were reported, but three dogs were transported to a emergency veterinary hospital.

Damage was extensive, but not determined at this time. Division Chief Donald McFeely requested a second alarm, bringing additional equipment and manpower to the scene.

Making the move to National Education Standards EMS ISSUE CHELLE CORDERO

Cohoes fire leaves one injured Cohoes, NY. A Cohoes woman suffered burns and smoke inhalation Saturday, May 4th when fire ripped through her home. The woman had to be rescued by firefighters from a lower roof of 92 Manor Avenue.

Authorities say the woman was able to climb out a second floor window onto the roof, but remained there until firefighters arrived. They used a ladder to pull her to safety.

She was taken to an area hospital and later transferred to Westch-

ester Medical Center, but no other injuries were reported. Authorities say a first floor resident was able to escape safely.

Crews from Cohoes, Green Island, Watervliet and Troy battled the stubborn blaze for over an hour before bringing it under control. Cohoes Fire Chief Joe Fahd says

limited access to the second floor on one side of the building made fighting the blaze difficult.

The home suffered extensive damage, but crews kept the fire from spreading to neighboring homes.

Authorities say it may have started in the rear of the structure but a cause remains under investigation.

The NYS Bureau of EMS recently adopted national education standards beginning in April 2012 and in place with December 2012.

This move is not exclusive to New York, several states are making this transition.

According to a recent National Association of State EMS Officials (NASEMSO) survey, 70% of states required National EMS Program Accreditation by December 31, 2012; 17% of states will require National EMS Program Accreditation by 2017. The remaining states plan to implement National EMS Program Accreditation sometime in the undefined future.

In 1996, the NHTSA and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) published the “EMS Agenda for the Future”. The intent of the agenda was to create a common vision for the future of EMS and was designed for use by government and private organizations at the national, state and local levels to help guide planning, decision making, and policy regarding EMS. Individual states are encouraged to use the National EMS Scope of Practice Model as a foundation to establish state EMS practitioner levels and to credential individual practitioners in a way that best meets the needs of the state.

The NYS Bureau of EMS website lists the following basic changes according to the new guidelines: National Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) will be the NYS CFR with some modifications-Estimated hours = 48 – 60;

National Emergency Medical Technician will be the NYS EMT with some modifications-Estimated hours = 150 – 190; National Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) will replace the NYS Intermediate-Estimated hours = 160 – 200; NYS Critical Care (CC) will not change for now; National Paramedic will be the NYS Paramedic-Estimated hours = 1000 – 1200. The revised educational format is designed to provide a community-based health management that is fully integrated with the overall health care system.

New York CFR and EMT are tested on the new Educational Standards since the December 20, 2012 exam; AEMT and paramedic will be tested on the new educational standards starting with the May 23, 2013 exam. For the NYS CME Refresher Program all Course Sponsor EMT CME programs completing on or after December 20, 2012 must conform to the new objectives.

In addition, all EMT CME participants, who submit for recertification after December 20, 2012 must submit a letter from their CIC of record for their agency that the participant has completed all newly developed objectives either through agency based training or training through a BEMS Course Sponsor.

These nationally accredited EMS education standards will bring our pre-hospital emergency services a step closer for EMS to gain the credibility that other medical professions have achieved by bringing EMS to an educational par with them. Accreditation is private and an outgrowth of the higher education community; it helps to assure quality. The EMS education system is national in scope while allowing for reasonable state and local flexibility and program accreditation does NOT replace any state’s authority to license educational programs.

Structure fire for Fredonia At about 2:00 p.m. on April 22nd, the Fredonia Fire Department was dispatched to 3722 Webster Road for a structure fire. The fire departments on scene were Fredonia, West Dunkirk, East Dunkirk, Irving, Hanover Center, Westfield, Forestville, Sheridan, Cassadaga, Stockton, Brocton, South Ripley, Mayville and the City of Dunkirk as well as hazmat. As of 6:00 p.m., they where still putting water on the hot spots.

Grand Gorge hosts annual dinner The annual Grand Gorge Fire Department dinner was held at the Grand Gorge fire house on April 6th. President Dan Ballard welcomed over 70 guests.

EMS CoCaptain Karen Hinkley, presented highlights of the year 2012 in a display of photos taken during the year. GGRS Lieutenant Bill Schryver announced that GGRS responded to over 125 calls. The squad was also involved in other important things including E M S recruitment at local schools, ongoing training, drills, NYS conference, EMS memorial service, community dances, parades, assisted at Delaware County Fair providing EMS coverage, hosted several Red Cross Blood drives, assists the fire department, standby at fires, chicken barbecue fundraisers, and providing mutual aid to neighboring districts.

Bill Schryver introduced our two newest squad members, Roberta VanValkenburgh and Nicci Gockel. Captain Patrick Brady from the Lockport Fire Department put the cribbing in himself

Car up a pole for Lockport It appears that the driver of this vehicle had some type of medical issue and drifted off the road, driving right up the guide wires.

Lockport fire realized the car was still in gear, the driver not responding to voice commands and the wheels moving. The guide wires were holding all four wheels off the ground and preventing it from rolling over.

Lockport Fire Captain Pat Brady realized it was a dangerous situation, placing protective cribbing under the vehicle’s rear tires himself. Lockport

firefighters and paramedics grabbed specialized ladders and got in position to reach the disoriented driver.

Niagara County Sheriff's and Lockport Police worked together to shut down the busy intersection of Davidson Road and Lincoln Avenue in Lockport.

As rescue workers got up the ladders, the driver awoke and started moving. Unfortunately, the guide

wires were starting to peel.

Lockport Fire wasted no time getting the woman on a backboard and out through the rear door.

Officer Wasik from Lockport Police and Niagara County Sheriff Deputies assisted in lifting the woman from the back of the car and away from the dangerous car.

The female patient was transported to ENH Lockport and NYSEG responded to cut the pole so the car could be towed.

Potential hazmat in Gates Rochester, NY. The Gates Fire District declared a Level 0 hazmat on Avanti Drive on the afternoon of April 18th. The dispatch information stated that they needed investigators for a "unknown radiological substance in a lead container". Officials from Gates Fire Department, Monroe County Health Department, Monroe County Hazmat team and an EMS physician were on scene. No threat was found and officials did not comment on the cause or origin of the incident.

Two police officers pulled out a driver of a Liberty Cab van who had a medical emergency.

He struck the concrete median of in- JUMP TO FILE # bound Route 33 050613114 near Locust St. The van caught fire and the police officers risked personal injury, pulling the driver from the vehicle on May 5th.

The driver was transported to a local hospital. 3rd Battalion Chief Michael Tuberdyke, hearing of the trapped driver, requested an additional engine to the scene. Police shut down Route 33 for some time.

The original response was Engine Co. 21, Ladder Co. 6, Rescue Co. 1 and the 3rd Battalion Chief, all of the 4th Platoon.

Grand Gorge and Roxbury Fire Department members stepped up to the plate to help others They held a chicken barbecue with all the trimmings on March 9, 2013. The proceeds will benefit the March of Dimes - March for Babies team "Re- JUMP TO FILE # membering Dylan". 041713100 The chicken was put on the barbecue after several hours of marinating in their special sauce and was ready for sale around 11:30 a.m. It was sold out by about 1 p.m. Salads, baked beans and desserts were prepared by members of the department as well as members of the United Methodist Church.

The “Remembering Dylan” team is walking on April 28th in the Albany March for Babies in memory of the son of GGFD Chief DJ Speenburgh and Karen Speenburgh, who died suddenly after birth in 2008. On December 11, 2008 their son, Dylan, was born two and a half weeks early by an emergency c-section. His heart had stopped beating. The doctors revived him and rushed him to the NICU. Needing more specialized care, he was transported to a Children's Hospital which was three hours away. On December 12, 2008, after being in the world for only a few short hours, he passed away.

Brush fire delays Metro North New Hamburg, NY - On April 17, 2013, Metro North and Amtrak trains were disrupted after a brush fire broke out near the New Hamburg train station, along the Hudson River. New Hamburg Fire Department arrived and quickly worked to get the fire extinguished. Also assisting at the scene was their fire rescue boat.

Henrietta finest take it off for St. Baldrick’s Foundation Victor, NY. On April 14, 2013 and in a bold statement of solidarity with kids with cancer, four members of the Henrietta Fire District volunteered to shave their heads for the first time at a recent St. Baldrick’s Foundation fundraising event to raise money and awareness for childhood cancer research. So far, the team has raised over $4,000 as part of a global effort to conquer childhood cancers. They are continuing to accept donations till December 31, 2013.

Firefighters use an exterior attack

Fire hits towing business storage building in Cohoes Cohoes, NY. Firefighters made quick work of a fire Wednesday, April 17th in Cohoes. The blaze broke out at 74 Main Street, in a former house used as a storage facility by T&T Towing.

Cohoes Fire Chief Joe Fahd stated that the T&T owner was in his office in a front building when he heard several pops. Upon investigating, he found smoke and flames coming from the back building.

The building contained several acetylene and oxygen tanks and at least two exploded. "Fortunately, we were able to get water on it quickly," said Fahd, "so that we were able to keep the other tanks from exploding."

Firefighters evacuated several nearby homes as a precaution, but

no injuries were reported.

Cohoes crews were assisted by Troy, Green Island and Watervliet.

They were able to knock the fire down in about 15 minutes.

"The guys did a super job knocking it down and keeping it contained to the one building," said Fahd.

A cause remains under investigation.

EMT’s standby to treat victim with active shooter nearby Massena Rescue was toned out to treat a reported shooting victim at the Massena Police Department at 11:30 a.m on Wednesday, April 24th.

A-212 responded to the call and EMTs found one patient who was suffering from an injury to her arm.

Police reported that the patient was in a vehicle and was shot at several times. The patient was stabilized and transported to Massena Memorial Hospital.

A-212 reported back in service at approximately 12:30 and was requested to standby during a police action related to our call. Massena Rescue toned out for additional crews to standby at the station. At 1:30 p.m. A-212, A-211 and A-216 were standing by ready to be de-

ployed to the police action.

At 4:15 p.m., Massena Police requested an ambulance report to the scene, staging at the corner of Woodlawn and Cedar Streets.

EMS units joined the Massena Police, Massena Fire Department, St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Department, State Police, New York State Police Special Operations Response Team (SORT) and the United States Border Patrol.

All Massena rescue units reported back into service at 7:30 p.m.

Chatham Rescue personnel treat one of the victims of the rollover accident on State Route 22 in Canaan.

Rollover accident shuts down Route 22 in Canaan Canaan, NY. On April 13, 2013, Columbia County 911 dispatched Canaan firefighters and Chatham Rescue at 3:30 p.m. for a reported one car rollover accident located on Route 22 south of Route 30 (Queechy Lake Drive) in the Town of Canaan.

Entrapment was reported and a helicopter, LifeNet 72, was placed on standby. Chatham Rescue requested the helicopter launched.

Canaan command requested the Lebanon Valley Fire Department to secure the landing zone at the Berkshire Farm Centers soccer field. Lebanon Valley also assisted with traffic control at Route 22 and Route 30 and also at Route 22 and Route 20.

ported one patient to the landing zone at Berkshire Farm. The patient was then transferred to LifeNet 72. LifeNet 72 transported one to Albany Medical Center in Albany. Chatham Rescue 207 also transported one to Albany Medical Center.

Route 22 was closed during the incident. The New York State Police investigated.

Town of Newburgh, NY - At 6:25 a.m. on Wednesday, April 24th Winona Lake Engine Company and the Town of Newburgh Emergency Medical Services were alerted for a rollover motor vehicle accident on Route 84 eastbound near Exit 7A. It appears that the driver fell asleep at the wheel resulting in the overturn. He was removed, packaged and transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Cold storage warehouse fire Parma, NY - The Hilton Fire Department responded for smoke showing from a three story former cold storage and canning plant at 208 Collamer Rd. on April 21st. The first arriving chief requested Hamlin Fire Department for a RIC and Spencerport to the scene with their quint 2911. North Greece provided a fill in company. The structure was charged with smoke and was lined with cork insulation. The building was placarded with red squares as required by section 311 of the New York State Uniform Building and Fire Code dated March of 2012.

The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation by the Monroe County Fire Bureau. Monroe Ambulance and Hilton Ambulance were on scene, but no one was injured.

Proposed legislation looks to attract firefighters Albany. A group of Albanyarea assemblymen are proposing legislation that would help recruit and retain volunteer firefighters.

The Answering the Call Act is a twofold piece of legislation. The first part creates a new schedule for training and qualification to allow for varied and flexible involvement for those who would volunteer. It would be more accommodating to recruits with families or jobs that require a lot of travel.

"Young men and women who, in the past, would have volunteered as firefighters are committing more of their spare time to a second and sometimes third job," said Assemblyman Tony Jordan of Jackson. " The Answering the Call Act is designed to help create a little flexibility to accommodate busy schedules."

The second part of the act creates a menu of discounts and benefits to help create a better work/volunteer/life balance for

current and potential volunteers.

"Time and again, when things are at their worst, our volunteer firefighters are at their best," said Assemblyman Dan Stec.

"The least we can do to show support for their selfless service to our communities is provide these heroes with these gestures of appreciation."

Among examples of the proposed benefits are covering the cost of EZ-Pass, hunting and fishing licenses or professional development programs, or providing discounts to state events and programs.

Local fire departments throughout NY have been facing declining numbers. According to the FASNY, departments have seen a loss of 15,000 members over the past 15 years.

The Education Advisory Committee and the Board of Directors of the Orange County Firefighters Museum announced the recipient of the 3rd Annual Fire Prevention Educator of the Year Award, Chad Quackenbush of the Excelsior Hose Co. No. 1 of the Warwick Fire Department.

He will be presented this award on June 1st at a gala being held at the museum from 5 to 7 p.m. Criteria for this award include innovative ways of presenting fire prevention and life safety education to the public. After reviewing several quality candidates, Chad Quackenbush was the unanimous winner of the award.

teaching fire prevention programs for the Town of Warwick for almost 20 years. He chairs his fire department’s Fire Prevention Open House annually and this past year he attended the State Academy at Montour Falls and received his National certification as a Fire & Public Safety Instructor.

Programs that Chad hosts are geared to scouts and seniors as well as school age children. He also handles publication distribution of fire prevention and fire safety brochures at Warwick’s Town and Village halls

and provides fire extinguisher training.

Chad will join our 2011 recipient Amy Conner of the Good Will Fire Department and Barbara Gasperetti of the Coldenham Fire Department, our 2012 recipient.

One displaced in kitchen fire

Garage fire in Buffalo

Gates, NY. The Gates Fire Department responded for a stove fire at 37 Maier Circle on the evening of April 21st. The fire extended into the kitchen with minor damage, although the residence is uninhabitable and the elderly occupant was displaced.

Buffalo firefighters of the 3rd Battalion 1st Platoon were called out to battle a fire in a one story block repair garage at 17 Kentucky St. in Buffalo's Old First Ward on May 8, 2013. Damage to the building was $10,000 and $5,000 to the contents. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Three car MVA in Town of Newburgh Town of Newburgh, NY. On the morning of May 1, 2013, Middlehope Fire Department and the Town of Newburgh Emergency Medical Services were alerted to a three car motor vehicle collision near 5182 Route 9W. Upon arrival, they found a Toyota, a Ford SUV and a Mercedes sedan involved in an accident. The drivers of the vehicles were stabilized, packaged and transported to a local hospital with what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries. The accident is under investigation by Town of Newburgh Police.

On Wednesday, April 17th at approximately 5:55 p.m., Winona Lake Engine Company was toned out for a smoke investigation at the Orange County Transfer Station on Route 17K. They arrived to find fire and smoke coming from one the dumpsters. They quickly stretched a line and extinguished the fire. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Automatic alarm to working fire Rochester, NY. The Gates Fire District was dispatched to multiple automatic alarms April 15th at a metal processing and recycling facility on Scottsville Road.

During their response, a Monroe County Sheriff's deputy was on scene reporting light smoke from the D side. This information prompted the assignment be filled out including mutual aid from Chili. The first arriving lt. confirmed smoke from the large single story block building.

Restricted access to the property from locked gates and doors necessitated forced entry and large amounts of supply hose. A heavy smoke condition without visible fire was found inside.

The roof was opened, the sprinkler system was activated and pumped to. The Rochester responded with Truck 5 and Engine 7

at the request of the Gates deputy chief.

Assisting on scene was the Monroe County Fire Bureau as well as Gates and Chili EMS. Late in the incident, a Level 0 Hazhat was declared for contaminated standing water. Sources report the spontaneous combustion of magnesium in barrels was the cause of the fire.

One firefighter sustained a minor injury.

Rochester battles blaze in vacant Rochester, NY. Rochester firefighters battled a mid-morning fire in the area of Jay and Whitney Streets on Rochester's west side on Friday, May 3. First arriving units found heavy smoke and flames coming from a two and a half story vacant building shortly after 11 a.m. There were no injuries.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

At approximately 9:50 a.m. on May 3, 2013, Vails Gate Fire Department was alerted to a mulch fire at 12 Old Hemlock Drive.

A Town of New Windsor police officer enroute could see smoke from Riley Road and arrived to find mulch JUMP TO FILE # at the front of the 050313108 house on fire with extension to the front of the house.

The fire appeared to start in the landscaped area in the front of the house and extend up to the outer wall of the lower level.

Crews pulled off siding and removed a window to ensure that all fire was doused.

Within approximately fifteen minutes, Vails Gate crews had the fire knocked down. They continued to water down the area.

No injuries were reported and crews returned at approximately 10:30 a.m. The residents were not home at the time of the fire and Chief Sweeney had incident command.

New Windsor Fire Department covered a second call in the Vails Gate district that came in at the same time as the mulch fire.

New Windsor responded to an automatic alarm at 2000 Senior Court. That alarm was accidentally set off by maintenance.

One transported On Saturday, May 4th at approximately 12:40 p.m., a two vehicle accident on Meadow Hill Road at Lancer Drive resulted in one transport to a local hospital. On the scene were Winona Lake Engine Company, Town of Newburgh Emergency Medical Services and Town of Newburgh Police.

Who needs to laugh more than the Fire Companies ---the first responders who deal with dangerous circumstances each and every day?

There’s an innovative concept for fund-raising developed by Joey Novick, who is a stand-up comedian and the Fire Commissioner in his hometown: Stand-up comedy shows.

Fire companies can get much-needed laughs and profit financially as well.

Novick's company, ComedyWorks, provides all-star headline comedians from HBO, Comedy Central, Showtime, Last Comic Standing, and the Tonight Show.

Novick’s been producing comedy shows since 1977, and has experience producing shows with such comedians as Jerry Seinfeld, Rosie O’Donnell, Larry The Cable Guy, and Tim Allen.

"The comedians were very funny, and very professional," wrote Mark Bruhmuller, Fire Chief of the Churchtown Fire Company of New York. “Joey Novick did an excellent job. Everybody loves to laugh, and it's a great deal of fun."

ComedyWorks produces more than 300 shows a year, almost 150 of those for emergency service organizations. The money these shows can

raise varies, depending on things like the number of tickets sold, how they're priced, the amount spent on promotion and whether food and drink are available.

"Mostly companies produce shows in their own facilities, which may hold 300–400 people," says Novick.

"We'll put together a show for them that will bring in comedians from major comedy clubs, with a headliner from HBO, Comedy Central, or the Tonight Show. The feature performer will be someone who's headlined the comedy circuit: Catch a Rising Star, the Improv, the Comedy Store. The host of the show will be a comedian who's very high-energy, like a gameshow host, to get the audience warmed up. A triple headliner show!”

The Somerset Fire Company of New Jersey produces two fundraisers a year through ComedyWorks.

"We've done about ten shows so far, and it's been great," says Mike Rein-

beck, who coordinates the shows for the 65-member volunteer department.

"A friend of mine who had used Joey told me, 'This guy books really good acts.' So, we did the first show, everything was great, and we've been doing shows with Joey ever since."

"I find their people to be very funny," agrees Adam Hubney, chief of the Atlantic Highlands Volunteer Fire Department in New Jersey, which books comedians through ComedyWorks for its annual dinner.

"We have a professional comedy club in our county, and the quality is just as good."

Comedy Works provides a 30-page ‘How-To’ guide that assists organizations through the comedy show production and warns of mistakes to avoid. "We make sure they follow everything in the guide," says Novick. "If a company has never done this before, it gives you everything from you need to know. We make sure that things get done right.

Clients who follow the guide always do very well and tend to make money.”

Wow! Summer must really be around the corner. As I mentioned last month the requests for fat-burning, middle whittling, butt shaping routines pour in around this time. My last column contained a fat-burning total body toning workout. Guess it spurred some of you on. What I’m getting now is requests for a quick effective abdominal routine that can be done every day. Boy, you are rolling now. Here goes…

The first routine requires a swiss ball and a medicine ball.

The second one is equipment free. Choose the one that suits you or alternate their use for variety. Both routines are intended for clients with healthy backs and free of any other exercise restrictions. As always, consult your physician before beginning this or any other exercise routine.

Perform 15-20 of each exercise. Three sets of each exercise with a set of standing alternating knee lifts, front kicks and side kicks (all kickboxing style) in between each set as listed.

Routine 1 Jacknife: Over a swiss ball , with shins resting on ball and hands on floor, shoulder width apart. Keeping hands still and shoulders stable roll ball under you by bending knees up to chest.

Return to start position.

Alternating knee lifts Seated twists, sit, straddling a bench. Hold a medicine ball (be sure to select an appropriate weight). Turn and place ball on bench behind you. Twist to opposite side and pick up ball. Turn and place ball on bench behind you. Complete your 15-20 reps and then repeat in opposite direction.

Alternating front kicks Medicine ball crunch, lie on back knees bent, feet flat on the floor, shoulder distance apart.

Hold a Medicine Ball beyond your head. Perform a crunch, bringing medicine ball up and then toward knees.

Alternating side kicks Cool-down with some low back stretches Routine 2 Seated knee raise, sitting at the end of a bench or on the floor, lean back 45 degrees. Hold that position. Bend legs as you pull knees to chest. Extend to starting position.

Alternating knee lifts Elbow to knee touch, lying on back knees bent, feet flat, clasp hands behind head, (being careful to avoid pressing head forward).

Cycle your legs (like pedaling a bike) while simultaneously lifting head/shoulders and touching right elbow to left knee then left elbow to right knee.

Alternating front kicks Crunches, lying on back, hands clasped behind head or crossed over chest. Legs extended upward, knees very slightly bent.

Crunch/sit-up.

Alternating side kicks Cool-down with some low back stretches These exercises will tone and shape those abdominal muscles, but remember if they are disguised

by a layer or two of fat, you’ve got to do some burning in your workouts and/or trim some of the fat from your diet. Last month’s routine is a great way to accomplish that.

RecruitNY held at hundreds of departments across New York New York. For the second year, the Firemen's Association of the State of New York held RecruitNY. The focus of the campaign was to unite departments from every corner of the state with the sole mission of bringing in new recruits.

Volunteering with fire departments has seen a decided decline for many years. RecruitNY was designed to bring the community to the fire house. In doing so, the end goal is to bring in new volunteers.

It is estimated that at over five hundred departments across the state participated in this year's event, held the weekend of April 27th and 28th. At most departments, residents were able to don gear, ride to the top of ladder trucks, experience the drama of an extrication and ultimately fill out an application.

Although there are many training classes and the requirements needed from each department vary, the sense of community and the benefits outweigh the time volunteers give to the department.

In addition to the enormous gratitude that firefighters get from residents at an incident scene, they generally receive training, injury benefits and often educational and retirement incentives.

Bedroom fire in Buffalo Buffalo firefighters of the 7th Battalion 3rd Platoon were called out to 118 Wakefield Ave. in the city's Central Park neighborhood on May 7th. Five adults and thirteen children were displaced by the blaze. Firefighters used a couple of one and three quarter inch hand lines and 45 feet of ladders to bring the blaze in the two and a half story frame dwelling under control. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation. The fire started in a first floor bedroom. The Red Cross was called to assist the families.

Motorcycle accident Town of Newburgh, NY - On Sunday, April 28th, Winona Lake Engine Company, Town of Newburgh Emergency Medical Services and Mobile Life Support Services were alerted for a motorcycle versus vehicle accident. Motorcycle versus car crash in Richmond Richmond, NY - On Sunday afternoon, May 5th, Richmond Fire and EMS responded to a motorcycle versus car accident on County Road 37, just north of County Road 15. Both the car and motorcycle were traveling southbound on County Road 37 when the motorcycle struck the rear of the car. The male operator of the motorcycle was transported by Richmond EMS to Strong Memorial Hospital for arm and facial injuries. The cause of the crash was being investigated by the New York State Police.
