One Person and Several Anim als Die in Second-Alarm House Fire on River Road in Schodack Landing SCHODACK LANDING, NY - On May 18th at 3:35 P.M., the Rensselaer County Emergency Communication Center was taking multiple calls for 546 River Road in the Schodack Landing Fire Dis­ trict for a well involved structure fire with entrapment.

The Schodack Landing, Castleton, Schodack Valley, South Schodack and East Schodack Fire Departments, as well as Nassau ambulance, were immediately dis­ patched to the scene. At the same time of this incident, the Rensse­ laer County Emergency Commu­ nication Center was handling a lumberyard fire in another part of the county on Route 66 in Hoags Corners Fire District.

Castleton Car 1 called en route to the scene and the dispatcher no­ tified him that they were taking multiple calls on the fire, and there was possible entrapment. As the chief was responding to the scene a thick, heavy black column of smoke was visible from over five miles away, Castleton ambulance notified the dispatcher that they were clearing another call and would be en route to the scene. A state police unit quickly arrived on scene and notified the dispatcher that the house was fully involved and the neighboring house across the street was beginning to catch fire. Castleton Car 1 immediately requested all stations to be redis­ patched for a working fire.

Rescue 32, Engine 6-9 and Schodack Landing Car 2 called en route to the scene and Schodack Landing Car 2 requested a tanker box to be transmitted as well as a second-alarm, bringing additional resources from East Schodack, Niverville, Stuyvesant, Stuyvesant Falls, Kinderhook, Nassau, East Greenbush, Best Luther, and West Ghent Fire Departments to the scene.

Units quickly arrived on scene and had a fully involved multi-oc­ cupancy structure fire with a 500gallon propane tank and heavy impingement along with an SUV on fire in the driveway. Firefight­ ers quickly directed their attention to the building across the street that was beginning to melt from the high intensity of the heat. Just as firefighters began to cool the building down with a hand line, one of the windows melted right

out of the building, exposing the interior portion of the structure.

Firefighters, fearing that building could catch fire at any time, began to rapidly cool it with their tank water.

Additional units stacked up on each other and began to knock down some of the heavy fire. Re­ sources from Stuyvesant FD ar­ rived on scene and began deploying their manpower to the rear of the building, and crews set up a line between the building and the propane tank. Stuyvesant's chief requested Amtrak to the scene to have a crew dig out un­ derneath the railroad ties so that a large diameter hose could be laid to an engine near the river to feed the scene. Crews began to knock down a large amount of the fire, but as they were doing so a large portion of the structure collapsed.

Command requested National Grid to the scene, as they had live power lines down in the yard.

Firefighters deployed addi­ tional hand lines to the rear of the building, as they still had reports of entrapment inside the building.

Despite heavy fire blowing over their heads, firefighters made their push up the stairwell and were met with significant heat, fire and heavy smoke. A hand line was used to knock down some of the fire before crews pushed into the building. As firefighters in the rear of the building were pushing in, a large portion of the roof came down on them, hampering their search efforts. They then backed out onto the stairwell and began to hit as much of the fire as they could while utilizing a thermal im­ aging camera and all of the win­ dows to attempt to locate the trapped victim.

A chief in the rear of the build­ ing noticed there was heavy fire in the basement below the firefight­ ers working on the stairwell and took a hand line to quickly knock down some of the heavy fire con­ dition. After another portion of the roof collapsed, firefighters pulled off of the rear stairwell and took up defensive operations. Firefight­ ers on the other side of a fence broke down the fence and utilized

a two-and-a-half-inch hand line to knock down a significant portion of the heavy fire running the roofline.

Tankers began to arrive on scene and command had the units set up at the end of the roadway, as there was only one way into the scene and one way out, and tankers were forced to turn around on the roadway. As tankers contin­ ued to drop water, firefighters con­ tinued to utilize that water in an attempt to bring the heavy fire condition under control. Firefight­ ers pounded the scene with tensof-thousands of gallons of water, and the heavy black smoke turned to brown and then turned to steam.

National Grid arrived and killed the power, making it safe for firefighters to move around the front of the building. As firefight­ ers were on the 'Bravo' side of the building, they noticed that there was smoke coming from under a neighbor's porch where hot em­ bers had ignited a small brush fire.

Crews quickly brought that fire under control. Command deemed the structure unsafe to enter and had firefighters remain on the ex­ terior portion of the structure. The New York State Police Bureau of criminal investigation requested additional resources to the scene and command requested the Rens­ selaer County Fire Investigation Team to the scene.

About two hours into the fire, firefighters were able to bring the incident under control after an ex­ hausting battle. Fire Investigators began to walk through the incident scene and two individuals were questioned by state police as they were working inside of the build­ ing at the time of the fire. Later in the evening, fire investigators lo­ cated the reported missing person from the fire and safely removed their body from the scene. Several animals were also lost in the fire.

The district attorney for Rens­ selaer County arrived on scene to meet with police and county in­ vestigators. One firefighter was transported to the hospital with heat exhaustion. No other injuries were reported. Investigators have not yet released any information on the determination of the cause of the fire.

In the first 7 minutes after a medical incident, the approximate amount of time that it takes for emergency services responders to arrive, people can die. A person with a massive arterial bleed will generally bleed out in 5 minutes. A person who isn’t breathing or whose heart is not pumping will commonly face significant irre­ versible brain damage after 6 min­ utes, and death is imminent in 10-15 minutes. Even if emergency responders are “right around the comer” and on the scene within a minute, crews can be overwhelmed without enough hands to treat casu­ alties if there are multiple victims.

Magen David Adorn, Israel's National Emergency Service, has been teaching various organizations worldwide how ordinary by­ standers can become Immediate Responders, especially after mass casualty incidents like shootings, explosions, tornadoes, and more.

Texas-based MedStar Mobile Healthcare recently offered courses in Hands-Only CPR, Stop the Bleed and Naloxone Administration. A few years back, Jersey City N.Tpro­ moted the concept of CBECs-community-based emergency caregivers; after approximately 60 hours of training with CPR, defib­ rillators, and oxygen, CBECs are available 24x7 to respond in their communities before EMS arrives.

Many EMS/FD/PD organiza­ tions have made training in CPR and more available for years. Re­ sponse to different emergency situ­

ations may need different ap­ proaches. In an active shooter situa­ tion, ordinary citizens, even with specialized training, need to know how best to protect themselves as well as help the injured. Sometimes this may even mean getting one’s self to safety and merely being able to tell responding agencies where the victims and any remaining threat might be. While citizen responders can definitely help to save lives, sometimes just simple yet valuable information can be passed along to professional emergency responders.

Every hand and eye on the scene can be a great help.

In addition to the valuable train­ ing in CPR and defibrillators, bleed­ ing control and the use of tourniquets, and Naloxone adminis­ tration (to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose), it is also recom­ mended to hold multiple drills to in­ clude not only the emergency responder agencies, but also the everyday citizen. Drills should be conducted to include multiple sce­ narios and be as realistic as possible to represent the different threats and safety needs (for instance use an empty school building over a week­ end or summer break, to include the safe navigation of hallways, etc.) Or­ dinary citizens need to learn how to assess an area for victims/threats while ensuring their own physical safety; relaying concise information to emergency responders; and, of course, providing as much assistance to victims as possible.

EMS units need to do more than just offer classroom training. All emergency responder agencies need to involve their entire community other agencies, layperson citizens, support services, and even media, — to ensure the safety, lifesaving treat­ ment, and recovery of their neigh­ borhoods after any emergency incident whether it be small or large, caused by man or caused by nature.

Citizen training and drills will also help foster goodwill between your agency and the community and en­ courage everyone to help their neighbors.

Firefighters Make Quick Knock on Barn Fire in Lima LIMA, NY - On Sunday, May 28th at 7:30 A.M., Lima and East Avon fire departments were dispatched to a barn fire at 7049 Heath Markham Road in Lima. Units went on location with smoke showing and were able to quickly extinguish a small fire with minimal damage to the structure. There were no in­ juries reported.

Vehicle Found Fully Involved Over Railroad Tracks in Newburgh NEWBURGH, NY - Middlehope and City of Newburgh fire de­ partments responded to a vehicle off the roadway in the area of North Montgomery Street and Park Place, May 16th. E911 reported that a vehicle had left the area of the nearby railroad tracks on the west side of the Hudson, beneath the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge. City, Town, and State Police re­ sponded and located the vehicle fully involved over a bank north of Pamela's on the Hudson restaurant. Firefighters stretched hose lines up the railroad tracks and started put­ ting the car fire out, as well as a semi-large brush fire that started due to the car fire. It was determined that the driver of the vehicle fled the scene. Town of Newburgh EMS and Storm King Engine Co. were also at the scene.

Pfeiffer, 66 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: March 23, 2023 Death Date: March 24,2023 Fire Department: Deptford Fire Department Initial Summary: On Thursday, March 23, 2023, Fire­ fighter Jeff M. Pfeiffer responded to a smoke investiga­ tion at the intersection in the town of Deptford. No fire or smoke was found. On the return trip, Firefighter Pfeiffer began to cough. As firefighters arrived at the fire station, the coughing became more aggressive and he began to experience shortness of breath. He had suffered a heart attack. Firefighter Pfeiffer then became unre­ sponsive. He was immediately transported to the hospi­ tal where he remained in critical condition. The next day, Friday, March 24, 2023, there was no sign of brain activity and the family made a decision to take him off of life support. Firefighter Jeff M. Pfeiffer was an organ donor and was also the past chief of the department.

North Carolina: Minton "Butch" Beach, 68 Rank: Chief Incident Date: March 13, 2023 Death Date: March 22,2023 Fire Department: Oak City Volunteer Fire Department Initial Summary: On Monday, March 13, 2023, Chief Minton "Butch” Beach was attending fire department mandated training at the station. During the training, he starting to feel ill and returned home. A while later, fire department members checked on him and he was still feeling poorly. He was transported to the hospital where he remained until his passing on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 from an apparent heart attack.

Texas: Edward "Eddie" Hykel, 60 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: March 28, 2023 Death Date: March 28,2023 Fire Department: City of West Fire Department Initial Summary: On Tuesday, March 28, 2023, the City of West Fire Department and Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers were providing traffic control on

1-35N after a vehicle caught on fire. The inside lane was shut down with traffic control devices, a fire truck, and two DPS patrol units. A driver of a Peterbilt tractor trailer traveling on the inside lane struck Firefighter Hykel, the fire truck, and the patrol units. Firefighter Hykel was immediately transported to the hospital where he passed away a short time later from his in­ juries.

Illinois: Jermaine A. Pelt, 49 Rank: Firefighter/EMT Incident Date: April 4, 2023 Death Date: April 4,2023 Fire Department: Chicago Fire Department Initial Summary: On Tuesday, April 4, 2023, the Chicago Fire Department responded to a residential fire at 120th and Wallace Street. During the fire at­ tack, at approximately 4:00 a.m., a mayday was called. Firefighter/EMT Jermaine A. Pelt was located by his hose line at about 4:10 a.m. He was immedi­ ately transported to the hospital where he passed away a short time later. Two other firefighters were also injured and are listed in stable condition. The fire is believed to have started in the attic of the home, which spread to its two neighboring buildings. The cause of death for Firefighter/EMT Pelt has yet to be determined.

Illinois: Jan Tchoryk, 45 Rank: Lieutenant Incident Date: April 5, 2023 Death Date: April 5, 2023 Fire Department: Chicago Fire Department Initial Summary: On Wednesday, April 5, 2023, the Chicago Fire Department responded to a fire at a highrise building on Lake Shore Drive. While heading down the stairway departing the fire floor, Lieutenant Jan Tchoryk collapsed. He was immediately treated by crews on the scene and transported to the hospital where he passed away a short time later. The cause of death has yet to be determined.

Teaching LUNAR One of the basic concepts in firefighting is calling a MAYDAY using the LUNAR acronym. So important that many departments drill several times a year using the concept either as a stand-alone or incorporated into other drills. But how is it being taught? As a company officer are you teaching all five parts of LUNAR or just a couple of the letters? When you break down the acronym, what are really the most important parts? Arguably that would be who you are, your location and what you need.

Does a firefighter calling a MAYDAY really have to say what their assignment was and what apparatus they came in on? Focusing on the most important aspects is certainly a legitimate way to in­ struct LUNAR - just cut to the chase and make sure everyone knows the basics because in a life and death situation the fire­ fighter calling that MAYDAY is going to be experiencing fear and anxiety and may only stammer out parts anyway.

Seriously, the firefighter that is calling a MAYDAY isn’t really going to care if they were primary or secondary search, they just want to get out of there to live another day. That said, as a former high school science teacher and now a NYS SFI, I can tell you the prob­ lem with teaching only part of a given concept is the fact that stu­ dents will only take away an even smaller fraction of what you are teaching them.

If there are five parts to LUNAR and you only teach the three you deem most important then likely the students will only recall one when it becomes necessary. But if you teach all five then empha­ size the three most important parts then it is likely that your stu­ dents (most likely just blackhats) are going to recall those three most important parts.

Teaching all five parts has other advantages. Even as a blackhat you may find yourself in the position of an 1C and thus on the re­ ceiving end of a MAYDAY. I would venture to say that most LUNAR/MAYDAY lessons are taught from the perspective of the trapped firefighter and rarely about what to do and say if you are on the receiving end. If that ever does happen, after securing as­ sistance one of the most important things you can do is keep that trapped firefighter calm. How do you do that? By TALKING to them - even if they stop or can’t respond!

Now the question is what do you talk about? Well, conveniently, the script is already provided with LUNAR. You have five things to talk about. Hopefully, the trapped firefighter gave you two or three parts that you can repeat back. Then, use the other parts to calm them down. Especially if they are low on air, facing a grim situation where talking them off the ledge (literally and figuratively) will help get their breathing under control, thinking straight and situationally aware.

When teaching LUNAR remember to take into account different perspectives. From the point of view of the person calling the MAYDAY it is acceptable (although not ideal) to teach and focus the lesson on only the most important aspects taking into account the inevitable fear and anxiety that will accompany a downed fire­ fighter. But, also take into account that LUNAR should be taught in its entirety from the perspective of being on the receiving end of that same MAYDAY and using it for that unwritten SOP of keep­ ing a firefighter calm when their life hangs in the balance.

Firefighters in Southern Rensselaer County Battle Multiple Barn Fires CASTLETON, NY - On May 9th at 2:28 RM., the Castleton Fire Department, along with mutual aid from the Clinton Eleights FD for the FAST, South Schodack FD, Schodack Landing FD, West Sand Lake FD, Floags Corners FD, Schodack Valley FD, East Schodack FD, Nassau FD, Best Luther FD, East Greenbush FD, Stuyvesant FD, Nassau Ambu­ lance and Castleton Ambulance, were dispatched to the area of 77 Clove Road for a reported barn fire.

As the police department was responding to the scene, they had a significant column of smoke vis­ ible in the distance from up to 15 miles away. Castleton Car 1 called en route to the scene and notified the dispatcher that he also had a column of smoke in the air.

As units were en route to the scene, a town highway truck noti­ fied the dispatcher that they had multiple barns on fire. As Castle­ ton Car 1 transmitted the secondalarm, the column of smoke turned jet black and filled the af-

3g ternoon sky. The first arriving en­ gine on scene had multiple barns heavily involved, with fire im­ pinging on a fourth barn. Fire­ fighters began deploying multiple hand lines to protect the home and the other barn, and started to knock down the heavy fire condi­ tion with their tank water. Addi­ tional firefighters began running a supply line from the farm to the roadway. The first arriving tanker on scene established a water sup­ ply at the bridge while additional firefighters made their way down to assess the crews working to suppress the heavy fire condition.

Crews continued to knock down the heavy fire condition, and as they were doing so, they no­ ticed that the fourth barn had fire on one of the eaves. Firefighters utilized a hand line and quickly knocked that fire down. Firefight­ ers made their way inside of the barn and checked to see if there

was any further extension, which there was not. On scene firefight­ ers had several propane tanks that had caught fire inside the burnedout barn. Firefighters utilized a hand line to cool the tanks and ex­ tinguish them. Due to unsafe con­ ditions, firefighters requested an excavator to the scene to pull down the walls that were still standing. Firefighters continued to hit hotspots in multiple locations and knocked down part of a field that also caught fire.

Once the excavator arrived on scene, the operator pulled down the walls and firefighters quickly extinguished all remaining hotspots. Crews remained on scene for an extended period of time conducting extensive over­ haul. No injuries were reported.

The owner lost three barns, a trailer, a bucket truck, skid steer, three sheep and some chickens in the fire. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

The New Paltz Fire Dept, was dispatched for two recent accidents on the New York State Thruway. The first accident was a single­ car in the median on May 8th. The second accident involved three cars with a rollover on May 17th. New Paltz Rescue Squad as­ sisted on scene.

City of Newburgh Third-Alarm Displaces Several Families NEWBURGH, NY - On May 16th, City of Newburgh Fire Dept.

Engine 3, Truck 1 and Car 4 were dispatched to 210 North Miller St. for a reported porch on fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a two-story ordinary single­ family building with a rapidly ex­ tending porch fire. Fire was already well involved inside the first and second floors of 210, and was extending to 212 North Miller, 208 North Miller and 55 Gidney Avenue. The fire was throughout the first floor of 212 North Miller St. Engine 3 front suctioned a hy­ drant at North Miller St. and Gid-

ney Ave., stretched a 250-ft. oneand-three-quarter-inch hose line to 210 North Miller St., and began extinguishing the fire on the first and second floors. Truck 1 stretched a 250-ft. one-and-threequarter-inch hose line to 212 North Miller St. and began extinguishing the fire on the first floor, as well as the fire in the rear. A 100-ft. oneand-three-quarter-inch hose line was used to extinguish the fire at 55 Gidney Ave. A200-ft. one-andthree-quarter-inch hose line was

used to extinguish the fire burning on 208 North Miller St. Due to advancing fire condi­ tions in addition to the initial hir­ ing back of Engine 1 and the second-alarm request. Engine 11 was requested to be staffed as well.

A third-alarm was eventually re­ quested for callback purposes.

West Point and Air National Guard assisted at the scene with numerous assignments. Red Cross was contacted for the displaced oc­ cupants.

Heavy Fire on A rrival on Prout Ave. in Brunswick BRUNSWICK, NY - On May 15th at 9:03 P.M., the Rensselaer County Emergency Communica­ tion Center dispatched the city of Troy‘s fire department to the area of Tibbitts Avenue and South Lake Avenue for a reported structure fire. The caller reported a large glow in the area, and it appeared that there was a house on fire.

Engines 2, 4 and 6, along with Trucks 1 and 2, the rescue squad.

Medic 4, and the battalion chief re­ sponded to the scene. As units ar­ rived in the area, they could not locate the fire on South Lake Av­ enue and continued to search. An­ other caller reported that there was a house on fire with fire coming from the windows. Fire units noti­ fied the dispatcher that they could not find the fire and to get a better location from the callers.

As Engine 6 turned down Prout Avenue, the officer on the rig notified the dispatcher that they had found a house fire in the Brunswick No.l Fire District, and they would be stretching a line.

Engine 6 notified the dispatcher that he had heavy fire showing from a two-stoiy bungalow and de­ clared a Signal 30 for a working structure fire. The Rensselaer County Emergency Communica­ tion Center dispatched the Brunswick No.l Fire Co., Center Brunswick Fire Co., Speigletown FD, Mountain View FD for the FAST, and Mohawk Ambulance Service to the scene. Troy firefight­ ers quickly made their way inside of the structure, conducted a pri­ mary search of the residence and discovered that no one was home.

Firefighters made their way to the rear of the building where they had a heavy fire condition with fire that got into the attic area. Fire­ fighters from Brunswick No. 1 were at the firehouse for Monday night drill and quickly arrived on scene with Trucks 4 and 4-1. Fire­ fighters immediately began to as­ sist the other firefighters on scene.

Firefighters that were on the roof conducting ventilation were noti­ fied to get off, as they had heavy fire below them. Firefighters de­ ployed a high-rise pack to the roof of the structure, had the pump op­ erator charge the line, and knocked down the heavy fire condition in the attic area as additional firefight­ ers in the rear began to bring the fire under control. As firefighters continued to work on the 'Bravo' side of the structure, heavy smoke and fire began to push from the attic vent.

Truck 4 set up and deployed to the side of the building where they pulled the vent away, exposing the heavy fire condition. Firefighters from the ground level utilized a hand line and began to knock down the fire. Firefighters on the roof vented in the structure and crews inside deployed a hand line to the second floor and began to pull the ceilings to gain access to

the remaining hot spots. As addi­ tional resources arrived on scene, they staged in the front yard of the neighbor's house.

Firefighters were able to bring the incident under control quickly and began conducting extensive overhaul of the main fire area and attic area. No injuries were reported, and the fire is under investigation at this time. Firefighters on scene from the Troy FD packed up their hose lines and equipment and went back into service, turning the scene over to Brunswick No. 1 command.

Heavy Fire Destroys Home on Copper Rock Rd. in Newburgh NEWBURGH, NY - Orange Lake and Winona Lake Fire De­ partments responded to a reported house on fire at 4 Copper Rock Road, off of Rock Cut Road, on June 1st.

Fire Command arrived to find fire through the first and second floors and requested a secondalarm sounded, bringing in New­ burgh's FAST, Coldenham and Walden Fire Departments. A Tanker Task Force was set up at the foot of the road while additional tankers from Modena, Wallkill and Air National Guard responded to the scene. Goodwill FD stood by for Orange Lake, and Winona Lake was moved up to the scene. New Windsor was called to stand by.

An Albany County Paramedic retired this April after many years serving different commu­ nities as a first responder.

Paramedic Susan Kuhne backed her medic car into the bay and called out of service on her radio one last time before going into retirement from Al­ bany County EMS on Sunday, April 23rd.

Her first paid job was in the City of Poughkeepsie, NY, with Alamo EMS.

Fellow coworkers and first re­ sponders from Albany County Paramedics, Albany County Sheriff’s Ambulance, Ravena Rescue, Delmar-Bethlehem EMS, Coeymans Hollow Fire and New Baltimore Fire helped with a walk-out ceremony for Kuhne at the Ravena Rescue Squad building.

Kuhne started her career in 1992 with Colonie EMS after seeing an ad on TV. “Years ago, Colonie EMS used to run an ad on the television re­ cruiting members,” Kuhne said.

“In one of the ads on TV they closed the back door on the am­ bulance and it said “Mobile In­ tensive Care Unit” and I said ‘Oh, what’s that?'."

The ad sent her to venture to their main station and enroll in the EMT class, which was free to residents and all she had to spend on supplies was $11.

“I didn’t know anything about EMS or fire departments or any­ thing,” she said.

“The year I started down there it was voted the most violent city in New York State,” she said.

“There were shootings, stabbings and drug overdoses.”

Kuhne later became a flight medic and also became a part of the New York Urban Search and Rescue Team as a medical spe­ cialist, serving time at the site of the World Trade Center after the Attacks on 9/11.

“At Ground Zero when we real­ ized it was becoming more of a recovery than a rescue, I had op­ erated a fiber-optic camera and searched voids for people,” she said. “The team is really awe­ some and I think a lot of people should be involved with that.”

In 2015 or 2016 she started her employment with Albany County Sheriff’s EMS Division as a para­ medic.

“I’ve learned so much from every different patient, every different family, all the different people that I’ve worked with,” she said.

She says the amount of love she’s experienced and making positive changes have been the

highlights of her entire career.

“There've been so many fantas­ tic calls where, because of team­ work and training, people have just made out well when they were in the most dire conse­ quences.”

She stressed the importance of joining your local EMS or fire de­ partment and seeing what they’re all about, including ex­ plorer or junior programs for younger adults.

“Before I got into this, I didn’t know anything about it,” she said. “I never attended any open houses because I didn’t think that I would ever have anything to do with it or that I wasn’t the type of person they were looking for.”

After over 30 years in emergency services, Kuhne has decided to retire as a paramedic with Albany County, however, she still contin­ ues to work a separate job and is employed as a NYS Licensed Massage Therapist.

She was in school for Clinical Massage Therapy before work­ ing for Albany County, but had to close her office. She is now back working as a Licensed Massage Therapist and continuing to help others.

“A lot of the stuff that I’ve had the privilege to be involved with over the years is just amazing to me,” Kuhne said. “It’s been a really neat and interesting 30 years.”

While working in EMS, she was stationed in a room inside the Latham Firehouse and the fire­ fighters kept trying to convince her to join the fire department as well.

“I was like ‘well girls can’t be firefighters,’ because I didn’t think so because this was back in 92 or 93,” she said. “They said ‘sure you can,’ so for six dollars I filled out the application and then I became a member of the Latham Fire Department.”

She says she was the first in her family since nobody in her fam­ ily was involved in EMS or Fire.

Troy Fire Department Faces Multiple Problems While Fighting Second-Alarm Duplex Fire TROY, NY - On May 8th at 1:18 P.M., the City of Troy's Fire Department was dispatched to 21 Spring Avenue for a reported structure fire with multiple calls reporting smoke coming from the roof. As the box alarm was being dispatched for box 6-2-3 for En­ gines 6, 3 and 2, Trucks 2 and 1, Medic 4, and the battalion chief to the scene. Engine 1 was a few blocks away and quickly arrived on scene with the battalion chief, who notified the dispatcher that he had a Signal 30 with heavy smoke showing from a three-story brick duplex.

Engine l ’s crew deployed a one-and-three-quarter-inch hand line to the front door of the apart­ ment. As heavy brown smoke con­ tinued to push from the building.

Engine 6 arrived on scene and connected to the fire hydrant at Linden Avenue and laid into the scene. As additional units began arriving on scene, they went to work deploying additional hand lines and made their way inside of the building to find the seat of the fire. As firefighters began to lad­ der the building. Engine l's crew requested pike poles to begin to pull the ceiling as the fire was in the attic. As firefighters made their way around the rear of the build­ ing, they had a heavier smoke con­ dition pushing from the upper third-floor area and quickly lad­ dered the building.

Firefighters inside the build­ ing notified the other units operat­ ing on scene that they had tin ceilings. Firefighters made their way to the roof and began to vent one side of the structure, and as they were doing so heavy fire blew out the other side of the building from the attic vent in 25 Spring Avenue. As fire conditions began to rapidly change, com­ mand notified the dispatcher to transmit the second-alarm, bring­ ing the city of Watervliet's FD, Watervliet Arsenal FD, and En­ gine 4 to the scene. As heavy fire continued to travel the cockloft area, conditions on the inside of the building became unsafe and firefighters pulled from the build­ ing. Firefighters on the roof of the building kept making a push on the heavy fire pushing from the apartment on the third-floor, but were not having much progress.

As firefighters were attempt­ ing to connect to another fire hy­ drant, they learned that they did not have enough water pressure on Spring Avenue. Firefighters on Linden Avenue that connected into the fire hydrant were receiving ex­ tremely low pressure and needed more. Firefighters made their way back inside of the main fire build­ ing and requested another hand line inside the building in the rear.

Firefighters on the roof of the building were notified that they had heavy smoke pushing from all portions of the brick on the side of the building and from the roofline, and were told to get off the roof by command. As firefighters were pulling off of the roof, a portion of it began to sag. As firefighters re­ treated with the hose line open on the roof, heavy fire began to push through the roof area where fire­ fighters were just working.

Truck 2 began to set up with a master stream operation as fire­ fighters exited the building again.

Fleavy fire blew through the roof in the back of the building and command evacuated a nearby house that was close to the struc­ ture. Firefighters began utilizing multiple hand lines from the exte­ rior portion of the structure to knock down some of the heavy fire condition. As firefighters were going to go to master stream oper­ ations, the low water pressure from the hydrant nearby did not allow for the truck company to be able to flow water.

Firefighters in the rear of the building took out a window, tossed a hand line into it on the second-floor and climbed in. Fire­ fighters that climbed into the win­ dow pulled a hand line to the third-floor area along with multi­ ple hand tools and began to make holes in the tin ceiling. As fire­ fighters continued to do so, condi­ tions inside the building began getting worse. Firefighters utilized a hand line inside the building in an attempt to knock down a signif­ icant portion of the fire on the third-floor.

As firefighters continued to work, command in the front of the structure spoke with the water de­ partment and was told that they were in an area where all of the water lines had low pressure due to the area dead-ended, and the in­ frastructure was outdated. The Watervliet FD attempted to hook into a fire hydrant in front of the Culligan water facility, but the hy­ drant was dead. Firefighters work­ ing inside the building were exhausted attempting to pull the tin ceilings that had a plywood backer. Firefighters continued to hit the heavy fire condition on the third-floor with hand lines from the exterior portion of the struc­ ture. As firefighters were doing so on the 'Bravo' side of the building, the chimney began to pull away from the building. With command noticing conditions again chang­ ing and the water supply issue not improving, command made the last decision to pull everyone from

the building, shut down all of the hand lines and let the truck com­ panies go to work.

As the truck companies began to set up for aerial operations, fire­ fighters connected to a hydrant further up on Spring Avenue, but realized that there was very little pressure coming from it. As both truck companies attempted to use their master streams they quickly ran out of water as the hydrants in the area could not keep up with two truck companies working.

While this was going on, firefight­ ers deployed a two-and-a-halfinch hand line to the side of the building that was well involved in case the plan of the master streams failed. Truck 2 opened up their master streams and firefighters in the bucket began to quickly knock down a significant portion of the fire. Firefighters were unfortu­ nately only allowed to utilize one hand line on the side of the build­ ing during this operation due to the lack of water coming from the hydrants.

As firefighters in the truck company were able to darken down the heavy fire condition from the roof, firefighters placed the air packs back on and made their way back inside of the build­ ing and began to pull ceilings again to gain access to the remain­ ing hot spots. As firefighters were working inside of the building the truck company stopped operations and the fire took off again. This time, firefighters utilized brute force to begin to pull down the ceilings along with a saw. As fire­ fighters made a big enough hole, they utilized a hand line and quickly began to knock down the fire for the last time. Firefighters in the rear of the building contin­ ued to knock down the heavy fire condition that they were dealing with and finally brought the inci­ dent in the rear of the building under control. Firefighters re­ mained chasing fire in 25 Spring Avenue for an extended period of time.

Fire investigators arrived on scene and began to conduct their investigation into the fire. No fire­ fighters were injured on scene, but firefighters were absolutely ex­ hausted from this fire, as it was extremely labor-intensive. During the investigation, it was deter­ mined that there was an electrical problem in the residence from a ceiling fan which caused the fire.

Multiple people were left homeless from the fire, and the building remains unsecured to this day. Firefighters remained on scene for an extended period of time and later that evening went back in to service.

Second-Alarm Fire on Hudson Avenue in Rochester ROCHESTER, NY - Shortly after 4:00 P.M., on Saturday, May 27th, Rochester firefighters responded to the area of Hud­ son Avenue and Merrimack Street for the report of a build­ ing on fire. Responding units found a fire in a large two-and-a-half story vacant structure, spreading to an ex­ posure. A second-alarm was struck and the blaze was brought under control in about 45 minutes. There were no injuries reported. The Rochester F.D. Fire Investigation Unit was working to determine a cause.

Pet Cat Rescued from Second-Alarm W atervliet Apartment Complex Fire WATERVLIET, NY - On May 14th at 7:04 A.M., the City of Watervliet’s FD, along with the Green Island FD, Cohoes FD and Watervliet Arsenal FD, were dis­ patched to 2400 2nd Avenue at the Edward Joslin Apartments for a reported structure fire. The caller reported that the apartment up­ stairs was on fire. The police de­ partment arrived on scene and had a heavy smoke condition showing from the structure.

The first due engine from the City of Watervliet arrived on scene, transmitted the Signal 30 and requested the first and second platoon to be recalled. With heavy smoke showing from the structure and the building being a multi-oc­ cupancy large apartment complex, command immediately transmit­ ted the second-alarm, bringing the city' of Troy’s FD to the scene with Engines 6 and 4, Truck 2, and two battalion chiefs.

As firefighters deployed a one-and-three-quarter-inch hand line to the second floor, they were met with thick heavy brown smoke and extreme high levels of heat at the mid-level of the stair­ case. As firefighters attempted to make a push into the apartment, conditions kept getting worse and visibility was at zero. Firefighters made entry to the first floor apart­ ment and began searching to make sure that everyone was out of the building. As crews deployed an­ other set of hand lines to the side of the building, firefighters made entry to another apartment to make sure that everyone was out.

Firefighters made their way to the second floor of the adjacent apart­ ment where they encountered an­ other heavy smoke condition.

Firefighters from the City of Troy’s Truck 2 arrived on scene, set up on the side of the building and began tossing ladders to the roof. Firefighters also began toss­ ing ladders to the second story windows to set up just in case fire­ fighters inside the building needed to make an emergency exit and begin to vent the windows. As firefighters made progress on the second floor, conditions inside of the structure continued to rapidly deteriorate.

Thick violent turbulent black smoke began to chug from the windows of the second floor and on the Delta' side of the structure where the upstairs apartment was sealed. Smoke began pushing from the windowsills around the window that was still intact and a significant amount of heat began melting the siding and parts of the roof vent area above the window, as well as a surveillance camera.

began to pour from the vent holes.

Firefighters reached down with a New York hook and broke a lock off a vent on the front of the build­ ing. With conditions deteriorating, command made the decision to pull all firefighters from the build­ ing and ordered the evacuation tones.

As crews made their way out­ side, a firefighter conducted hori­ zontal ventilation of the apartment window with the heavy smoke pushing from it and a firefighter from the Troy FD took over the pump panel on the truck company and connected to a water supply.

Firefighters that were working on the second floor of the structure notified command that they had some type of plywood or boards on the ceiling and they could not gain access to the heavy fire con­ dition. The pump operator of the truck company allowed for water to flow into the pipe connected to the bucket, and as soon as the win­ dow was clear and the apartment was clear, heavy fire rolled across the ceiling and the truck company opened up and rust filled water from the hydrant blasted into the second-floor area.

Firefighters quickly started to bring the incident under control as the truck company pumped 2000gallons-per-minute into the sec­ ond floor of the building. As soon as the heavy fire condition was knocked down firefighters were able to make their way up to the second floor with another hand line and bring the incident com­ pletely under control.

Firefighters continued to hit hot spots for an extended period of time. After learning there was a pet still inside of the building, without hesitation firefighters from the Watervliet FD and the Cohoes FD made their way inside to search for the family's pet. Fire­ fighters were able to safely locate the cat and bring it out to their grateful owner, who was over­ whelmed with joy to have their cat "Tigger" back, which only ap­ peared to be wet from the fire.

Firefighters remained on scene for an extended period of time. Watervliet Housing Author­ ity and the Red Cross were con­ tacted for all of the individuals affected by the fire. The police de­ partment is investigating the cause of the fire, and no injuries were re­ ported. The Watervliet FD and their mutual aid companies went back into service later that after­ noon.

NEWBURGH, NY - On Friday afternoon, May 26th, active and retired firefighters, along with friends and family, were in attendance at the City of Newburgh FD for the final walk out of Christopher Odell who was retiring after 20 years with the fire department, along with fire dog "Nick" who was also retiring. Chris and Nick walked past every­ one that lined up to bid them a farewell and then read a statement thanking everyone for attending. Congratulations to both Chris and fire dog Nick on their retirements!

NEWBURGH, NY - Good Will Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 70 Creek Run Road on May 23rd.

Central Hudson was called in for a power cut. Town of New­ burgh EMS, Orange County Deputy Fire Coordinator 36-13,

and Town of Newburgh Police ID Unit/Fire Investigator were at the scene. Orange Lake FD was moved to the scene for manpower, while New Windsor FD and Plattekill FD were on stand by at Good Will's firehouse. The cause of the fire is currently under inves­ tigation.

It is the thirteenth edition and this column has reviewed some of the previ­ ous editions, but not of recent. In essence, it is a book that sells it­ self! Anyone who has even a slight interest in the New York City Fire Department will want this book as a reference. There is

really nothing left to the imagina­ tion that this book doesn’t cover.

Some of it is very surprising with reference as to what is covered. It covers in the beginning 9-11 and COVID 19 operations. It covers engine, ladder and rescue/squad operations and includes chief offi­ cer operations, training and statis­ tics. Also foam, hazmat marine, collapse, pipeline (a natural gas pipeline system) and airport oper­ ations. It also provides details of dispatch operations, alarm assign­ ment and radio procedures. There is a list of apparatus assignments for each company and unit. It in­ cludes an overview of EMS oper­ ations and shows ambulance deployment and much more. There are some photos taken by appara­ tus photographers with familiar names and others. The photos are mostly of special units which in­ cludes a k-9 unit from the Bureau of Fire Investigations. Photos of the original Super Pumper System with a satellite are also featured as well as Ladder 343 of the Ceremo­ nial Unit. There is a revised page 13 which will be sent to anyone who purchases a copy of this book.

This book is a continuation of the excellence done by the author in bringing us the updated details of this massive department.

Firefighter-Paramedic Jeff Reilly, after 28 years of devoted service to the residents of Troy, is retiring from the City of Troy's Fire Department.

Jeff's passion for firefighting began at the age of 10 when he received an award for rescuing a friend who was trapped in a mudslide. Displaying remark­ able bravery, young Jeff pulled his friend away from the danger­ ous precipice of a steep hill on Linden Avenue.

Born and raised in South Troy, Jeff embarked on his firefighting career on July 24,1994, starting at Engine 5 at headquarters be­ fore later transitioning to Truck 2. In 1996, Jeff found his perma­ nent home at Engine 6 in South Troy, and he grew to love his firehouse dearly.

Jeff fondly reminisced about the days when neighborhood kids would sneak into the firehouse to drink from what was renowned as the coldest water fountain in the entire City of Troy. He delighted in sharing stories of camaraderie, pranks, training experiences, and the unforgettable moments on the scene with his fellow firefight­ ers, his brothers.

Throughout his 28-year career, Jeff courageously battled some of Troy's most significant fires,

including the 117th Street Row House Fire, Hills Stationary Fire, and the Washington Pork Store Fire. However, his most memo­ rable fire was his very first in Lansingburgh, where, in the midst of the chaos, he acciden­ tally struck his officer on the nose with his helmet after re­ moving a window. The entire crew burst into laughter, creat­ ing an enduring memory. Jeff held a deep affection for the Troy Fire Department and cher­ ished the bond he shared with his fellow firefighters.

On his last day, the firehouse in South Troy was bustling with ac­ tivity as countless individuals came to bid farewell to Jeff. The air was filled with old tales of fires and historical moments from the fire service, creating a nostalgic atmosphere. Follow­ ing his retirement, Jeff plans to focus on home improvement projects, spend quality time with his family, and indulge in his passion for working on motor­ cycles. Jeff's son, Thane, fol­ lowed in his father's footsteps and joined the Troy Fire Depart­ ment where he is now a Lieu­ tenant.

NEWBURGH, NY - Cronomer Valley FD and Plattekill FD responded to a motor vehicle accident with rollover on Interstate 87 northbound, between mile marker 64 and 65, on May 28th. On ar­ rival, the vehicle was found in the medium just past the turn off for the Plattekill Service Area.

Firefighters secured the vehicle and assisted with the injured parties. Town of Newburgh EMS and Mobile Life ALS transported three patients to Montefiore/St. Luke's Hospial. Traffic was down to one lane during the incident. New York State Police are investigating the cause.

City of Newburgh Firefighters Hold Annual Memorial Service NEWBURGH, NY - City of Newburgh firefighters gathered on DuBois Street on May 29th, Memorial Day, to hold their an­ nual memorial ceremony. Marquis Taylor, Vice President of the Firefighters Union Local 589, was the Master of Cere­ monies. The Colors were presented by the Fire Department Color Guard, and Deacon Peter Haight, F.D. Chaplain, gave the opening prayer. Assistant Chief Paul Pullar read the names of members of the department who have passed, which was followed by a bell ringing for each member. A wreath was placed at the foot of the statue by Fire Chief Spinelli and V.P. Taylor. After placing the wreath, the Orange County Firefighters Pipes/Drums played Amazing Grace which was followed by the closing prayer.

On April 24th, Republic Airport Fire-Rescue conducted a live burn drill that consisted of hose handling operations for fuel spills, en­ gine fires, wheel fires, and interior attack, as well as truck oper­ ations. East Farmingdale Fire Department was in attendance with Engine 7. The drill was approximately 6 hours long, with 2 hours of classroom training and 4 hours of hands-on training.

SHIRLEY, NY - On May 12th at approximately 3:11 P.M., the Brookhaven Fire Department and Shirley Ambulance were toned out for a motor vehicle crash with re­ ported entrapment at Victory Ave. and the William Floyd Parkway.

Mastic Fire Department was also activated for the rescue truck to respond on the automatic mutual aid to the scene.

Loiacono (5-3-32) responded to the scene and on arrival, found a multi-vehicle crash. It was quickly determined that no one was trapped in any of the vehicles.

Brookhaven Rescues 5-3-3 and 5-3-4, along with Mastic FD Rescue 5-12-10 responded in to the scene. Crews from the rescue

trucks secured all the vehicles and cleaned up fluids using speedy dry. Shirley Ambulance, with as­ sistance from Mastic and Mastic Beach Ambulance, treated and transported the patients to local hospitals.

The scene was turned over to Suffolk Police who remained on scene until the tow trucks arrived.

S u ffo lk County J o in t W ater Rescue Exercise Held a t Narrows Bay MASTIC BEACH, NY - On Sunday, May 7th, the Moriches Bay Marine Incident Response team (MIRT) held a joint marine incident helocast training with the Suffolk County Police Aviation and Marine Bureau officers, as well as the United States Coast Guard in the Narrows Bay near Smith Point County Park.

Just before 10:00 A.M., the as­ sets from the police, as well as local fire and EMS agencies, met at the Smith Point Marina which was designated as the staging area for the exercise. Here, a review of personnel and assets available was conducted prior to the mission briefing being given. EMS rehab and a helicopter landing zone were also both established at the marina prior to the launching of watercraft. Fire Police and Park Rangers assisted with securing areas of the marina and Smith Point County Park, as well as di­ recting non-emergency vehicles through safely. After the briefing was conducted, Suffolk Police Marine Mike and the United States Coast Guard went out and did a sweep of the training area and assisted and directed non­ emergency watercraft outside of the training zone so that the fire and other emergency boats could safely enter the training zone and operate.

Once the training zone was deemed secure, members of the various fire departments, as well as EMS personnel launched on fire boats from the marina to the Narrows Bay to prepare for rescue swimmers to be deployed from Suffolk PD Helo 3. The depart­ ments that are members of the Marine Incident Response Team took turns recovering the survivor and rescue swimmer using various watercraft, such as small and large safe boats and fire suppression boats. Zodiacs, and jet skis. Vari­ ous equipment was used including sleds, stokes baskets and more to assist in removing the survivor.

Approximately 8 evolutions were conducted during this training pe­ riod to give all departments a chance to participate and allow some neighboring departments to work together.

Communications between the departments operating were con­ ducted via testing the new public safety talk group. The public safety talk group was created to allow inter department communi­ cation between Police, Fire and EMS agencies in the event of a water rescue or other large-scale

search and rescue operation. This talk group's goal is to minimize the amount of time that it takes to get information to all parties in­ volved, and also minimizes hav­ ing to use police or fire dispatchers to relay information from one group to another by pro­ viding critical direct communica­ tion between all assets on scene.

Prior to the creation of this talk group, police officers in helicop­ ters or police boats or on land would have to ask the police dis­ patcher to relay info to a fire dis­ patcher via landline or other forms of communication which would then be relayed by the fire dis­ patcher to fire units or medcom dispatcher to medical units and vice versa.

In addition to training on de­ ploying from a helicopter to res­ cue survivors and load them on watercraft, EMS personnel were deployed on a fire boat in case of a real-world emergency, and addi­ tional EMS personnel were lo­ cated at the staging area and conducted rehab of the rescue swimmers and survivors and emergency personnel that partici­ pated in the drill exercise to en­ sure there were no issues. Training together provides critical prepara­ tion for all the agencies so that should a real emergency occur, and these assets need to be de­ ployed, that the situation runs smoothly, and everyone knows their department's roles in the op­ eration.

Approximately 100-plus per­ sonnel from the following depart­ ments and agencies participated in this training: Center Moriches FD, East Port FD, East Moriches FD, Mastic FD, Mastic Beach FD, West Hampton Beach FD, Brookhaven FD, Mastic Ambu­ lance, Mastic Beach Ambulance, Shirley Community Ambulance, Stony Brook University Hospital and their Flight Medic Program, Suffolk Police Aviation, Suffolk Police Marine Bureau, and the United States Coast Guard Station Shinnecock. The training was also attended by several VIP guests from areas of state and local gov­ ernment. The training lasted about four hours, and was considered a success. No real-world emergen­ cies occurred during the training.

ROCKY POINT, NY - In May, the Mastic Fire Department held their Annual Installation dinner at Majestic Gardens in Rocky Point.

This year's dinner celebrated 98 years of service for the department.

During the event members were greeted by politicians from the state and local levels of government who were on hand to thank the depart­ ment and fire district for their service to the community. Once the digni­ taries were done with their remarks, the installation of the department's chiefs and officers commenced.

office. Chief Sunderman had a de­ commissioned cell phone and de­ commissioned radio mounted to a plaque with approval of the board and presented it to Firefighter Ben­ der at the dinner.

Outgoing Chief Sunderman gave his remarks thanking the mem­ bers of the department and his fam­ ily for all their dedication and support during his time in office as chief prior to the closing remarks.

Congratulations to all the chiefs and officers on their elected posi­ tions and to the award winners.

Man Vs. Machine Seminar Held at Islip Town Fire Museum CENTRAL ISLIP, NY - On the weekend of May 5th and 6th, Islip Town Fire Museum hosted a Man Vs. Machine seminar. The seminar featured instructors from PL Vulcan training. Firefighters from Nassau and Suffolk Counties were in attendance.

This year's seminar consisted of two days of training.

The first night con­ sisted of the lecture portion of the train­ ing.

On May 6th, the down and dirty hands-on por­ tion of the seminar took place.

Firefighters were split into 1 of 4 groups. Once assigned, the groups were sent to stations where they would learn skills that could be used for different types of technical type rescues that they may encounter. The stations ranged from basic ring stuck on a finger, which could be handled using different types of skills such as soap and a rubber band, or may require more drastic measures such as cutting it off with snips or a grinding tool de­ pending on the severity of how bad the ring is stuck.

There were also stations to learn how to get a hand out of an industrial type meat grinder. This station involved cutting the meat grinder open in such a way that the hand could be freed. There was also training on other indus­ trial machinery incidents like a hand in an auger, in which the members of the responding crew would have to secure the machin­

ery (lock out tag out), and then they learned how to either disas­ semble by removing the bolts, or shearing off the bolts if that was needed.

Initiative and Devotion Chaplain’s Corner Pastor Fernando Villicana

Having been a Firefighter my­ self, I can tell you from that expe­ rience that Firefighters learn to take initiative. Along with the training Firefighters receive, being flexible and adapting to different scenarios in an emergency is very important.

To see what needs to be done with­ out having to be told to do it can be a huge advantage. As the incident progresses, so must the strategy. It’s not much different in the Kingdom of God. I want to share with you three of the most powerful words ever written about the early church.

I believe these words is a key to the success and growth of the church.

You rarely (if ever) hear a sermon on these words because they wouldn’t be considered dynamic in and of themselves. Yet, these three words reveal the reason for the phe­ nomenal spread and endurance of the church. Let’s read these three overlooked, underestimated and un­ dervalued words.

Acts 2:42 (NIV) They devoted themselves to the apostles ’teaching and tofellowship, to the breaking o f bread and to prayer v43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. v44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. v45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. v46 Every day they continued to meet together in the

temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, v47 prais­ ing God and enjoying the favor of all the people.

Everything so far is what the church people did. Now notice what God did as a result. v48 And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

The early church thrived on a devotion to God which sprang from within them. The energy and motiva­ tion for living a Christian life in the early church (which is our model) came from within the people, not from external stimulus. Their zeal didn’t come from programs, it sprang up from within them. The text we read today show us that one of the greatest assets of the church was initiative and devotion. What you can do for yourself you need no one else to do for you. These de­ voted Believers were saying to the Apostles: “You don’t have to worry about us showing up to church or Connect Groups or outreaches. You don’t have to worry about me read­ ing my Bible or having a prayer life or taking care of one another’s needs.

We are DEVOTED all by our­ selves”. Taking spiritual initiative and being totally devoted to the cause of Christ will make a huge dif­ ference in the time we found our­ selves living. What can you devote yourself to that will cause growth and add value to people’s lives. Have a wonderful summer.

Three People Rescued from Rreezy Point Jetty QUEENS, NY - On May 29th, FDNY Marine 3 responded to a report of a vessel in distress in the vicinity of the Breezy Point Jetty. Upon arrival, Marine 3 observed three victims struggling on the slippery rocks of the jetty. Marine 3 nosed up to the jetty and was able to initiate rescues of three people. Harsh weather conditions including 20 MPH winds and 2-3' swells made this an arduous task. All three victims were pulled onboard Marine 3 and evaluated and treated for in­ juries including dehydration and exposure to the elements. Marine 3 then transferred the three victims to land where they received care from awaiting EMS units.
