Massive Four-Alarm Warehouse Fire in Rochester Ruled A ccidental ROCHESTER, NY - A fouralarm fire in Rochester started around 8:00 P.M., October 16th, on Leighton Avenue and spread all the way to G reenleaf Street.

After the flames were stopped crews still worked using water to put out som e lingering hot spots.

The damage and destruction were catastrophic.

Officials said the heavy fire and smoke were com ing mainly from the storage unit o f this building that houses several different busi­ nesses.

Rochester Fire Department Captain David A bdoch said the original call came in as a car on fire inside the warehouse o f the one-story building. Fire crews came from as far away as Penfield, Irondequoit and other parts o f the county to provide mutual aid. It was a defensive attack fire.

B esides making sure homes across the street from the ware­ house also did not burn down, firefighters said the construction o f the building kept the fire from spreading any further. Captain A bdoch said no one was inside the building, and no injuries were reported. An investigation into the cause o f the fire would follow.

Som e classic cars stored in­ side were destroyed. Local busi­ nesses also used the building for storage and a lot o f that burned up in the fire. Battalion C h ief Tim Young said that thanks to the building having a firewall, it kept the fire from spreading to the rest o f the building.

“It was crucial for the protec­ tion o f the next building down the row,”Young said. “ Had that fire­ wall not been there it w ould con ­ tinue to burn until it ran out o f the building. Our crews set up on the inside o f the firewall on the unbumed portion and made sure that the fire did not com e through.”

RFD confirms that the fire started when someone was work­ ing on his car and some flamma­ ble liquid was accidentally ignited. The fire is being ruled ac­ cidental. No firefighters were in­ jured.

ROCHESTER, NY - On Tuesday, November 8th at 6:28 P.M., the Rochester Fire Department responded to 44 Menlo Place for a reported kitchen fire. First-in companies reported heavy smoke showing from a row-townhouse. Fire was found to be in the kitchen and in the laundry room below it in the base­ ment. The fire was brought under control in approximately 25 minutes. The homeowner and a dog were able to escape the blaze unharmed. Officials from the RFD were investigating the cause. The homeowner will be staying with family mem­ bers while the home is being repaired.

64-Year-Old Man Dies in Town of Newburgh House Fire NEWBURGH, NY - On Tues­ day, November 8th, Town o f N ew­ burgh Police responded to a residence on Babes Lane in the Town o f Newburgh for the report o f a house fire.

Police arrived to find that one o f the five occupants had not emerged from the house safely.

Unfortunately, this victim succumbed to the fire and smoke.

Michael Gida, 64years-old, was trans­ ported to St. Luke's Hospital, where he was pro­ nounced deceased.

Two other family members were also transported to St. Luke's Hospital where they were receiv­ ing treatment for what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.

Town o f Newburgh Police were assisted by Middlehope Fire Department, Cronomer Valley Fire Department, Mobile Life Services, NYS Police and Town o f N ew ­ burgh Fire Inspectors. At this time the cause o f the fire is still being investigated, but does not appear suspicious.

S erious Head-On MVA in New burgh In ju re s Two D rivers NEWBURGH, NY - Good Will and Cronomer Valley Fire De­ partments responded to a head-on MVA on State Route 32 and the entrance to the Mid Valley Mall, October 25th. Town of Newburgh Police and EMS also responded. Both drivers of the vehicles were transported to Montefiore-St. Luke's Hospital. The roadway was shut down during the Town of Newburgh Police Department's investigation as firefighters checked the vehicles for hazards and spread speedy dry on fluids on the roadway. The roadway was reopened once both vehicles were towed from the scene.

During afternoon rush hour on October 17th, Broom e County Communications dispatched Five M ile Point Fire Department to In­ terstate 81 south­ bound in the area o f mile marker 9 for a reported SUV on fire.

Broom e County was quickly receiv­ ing multiple calls on this incident, ad­ vising a working vehicle fire. N ew York State Police would arrive on scene shortly after and confirm a well involved SUV on fire on the right shoulder o f the highway just south o f the Exit 3 o ff ramp.

Squad 59 would respond with a crew o f six. Arriving on scene.

Squad 59 advised o f a fully in­ volved SUV on the shoulder and that NYSP had closed all lanes o f 1-81 southbound due to the smoke conditions. Squad 59's crew went to work stretching a one-andthree-quarter inch hose line to at­ tack the fire. The main body o f fire was quickly knocked down, and two out o f three lanes o f traf­ fic were able to be reopened.

The vehicle was fully extin­ guished and tow ed away. All units returned to service in just over one hours time. Five M ile Point Fire Department was as­ sisted on scene by N ew York State Police, N ew York State DOT, and Studer's Garage.

CHELLE CORDERO Your ambulance is dispatched to a residence where multiple residents are complaining o f nausea, dizziness, and other flu-like symptoms. At least one o f those inflicted is also exhibiting with a flushed, reddish, skin tone (Bright red skin tones are a late, and dangerous, state o f poisoning). It is best to remove the victims and your crew from the interior. You might call for the local fire department to com e out and check for levels o f Carbon M onoxide (although it is N O T a re­ quirement in N ew York State, some ambulance corps have invested in their own detectors).

Getting those occupants to fresh air, opening windows to improve fresh air ventilation inside, and putting them on a non-rebreather mask with high flow 02, is a priority. Monitor patients for signs o f hypertension which may indicate cardiac complications from the exposure. If you have a choice o f hospital facility, and especially if your victim(s) is suffering from an elevated level o f exposure, bring them to a fa­ cility with a hyperbaric chamber. D o not delay transport.

A s the wintry weather sets in the incidence o f carbon monoxide poison­ ing greatens, C O poisoning can occur anytime during the year. Anywhere there is a source o f flame as in most home heating units there is the possi­ bility o f carbon monoxide poisoning incident. Com m on sources o f Carbon M onoxide com e from any vehicle with a gas engine, camp stoves, lanterns, burning charcoal, w ood stoves, gas ranges, heaters, furnaces, and poorly vented chimneys. While most residences and other facilities are SUPPOSED to be equipped with CO

detectors, just because there is no alarm, do not discount the possibility.

Com m on symptoms o f C O poi­ soning include headaches, fatigue, dizziness, abdominal pains, chest pain, sluggishness, and on the later stages, coma. And as mentioned above, a bright red skin tone is apparent when the blood has absorbed higher levels o f Carbon Monoxide. Pulse oximeters are useless indicators o f C O poisoning as they only measure the Oxygen in the blood and does not ditferentiate whether is Oxygen or Carbon M onox­ ide bound to the hemoglobin. There is modern technology that will measure the level o f C O in the blood, a Pulse CO-oximetry will measure the pres­ ence and level.

Many people are exposed to low levels o f C O every day and the body it­ self helps to rid itself o f the harmful molecules, but Carbon M onoxide poi­ soning can be fatal if the levels become too high or the victim is not treated promptly. Even those who appear to make a full recovery may have long­ term effects especially with organs that depend on Oxygen such as the brain and heart. Outcomes may also differ due to age and health status; pregnant women and their fetuses are especially endangered from C O exposure.

Most healthy patients will recover from mild C O exposure with clean and/or pure Oxygen. Up to 40% o f those exposed to high C O levels may experience seizures and cardiac disor­ ders even after the initial recovery.

Firefighters are constantly exposed to higher levels o f Carbon M onoxide and need to be carefully assessed. Carbon M onoxide poisoning will often take hours to get rid of, the half-life o f CO is a minimum o f three to four hours.

Remember that exposure to Car­ bon M onoxide can happen any time o f the year. Your best option is to trans­ port C O victims to the hospital and ad­ minister Oxygen during transport.

Always bear in mind that all respond­ ing emergency services personnel (EMS, FD, or PD) may have also been exposed and should be checked. I f your service does have a Pulse COoximetry available, it is a w ise idea to check yourself and fellow crew mem­ bers.

Port Jervis Fire Department Heroes S till Remembered 90-Years Later PORT JERVIS, NY - The year was 1932. The day, October 12th. The weather “beastly”a c­ cording to news reports about an accident that imperiled the lives o f six Port Jervis firefighters that evening, two o f whom were later recognized as heroes.

The six firefighters were members o f Port Jervis Fire D e­ partment and among the 125 who had traveled from Port Jervis to participate in Sullivan County’ s Fourth Annual Volunteer Fire­ men’ s Association Parade in Jef­ fersonville that afternoon. It was Sullivan County’ s largest parade to date, with the streets and side­ walks filled with participants and spectators.

A newspaper article noted the day’ s weather was seemingly “ the very worst o f the whole year”,yet 1300 firemen (rather than the 900-1000 that had pre-registered) turned out for the parade. An ad­ ditional “couple hundred ladies and others”were said to have ac­ com panied them, having join ed others along the parade route.

F ollow ing the afternoon pa­ rade, six o f PJFD’ s firefighters Russell Becking, John Fox, Arthur Accordino, Harry Shewchuk, Charles Buchanan, and Legrand Leicht - were traveling in a new Chrysler sedan to a din­ ner at the Lake Jefferson Hotel.

They lost control o f their vehicle as another car approached theirs, and their sedan plunged down an embankment and into Lake Jef­ ferson.

An article in the Sullivan County Record, dated October 13, 1932, reported the young fire­ men as having “lost direction”as another car approached theirs on a curve. Their sedan went over a wire cable railing near the hotel, tumbled down a 25-foot embank­ ment, and came to rest on its left side - submerged in Lake Jeffer­ son. The car and its occupants landed about six-feet under water, near a lake shore.

The article noted that the car had not sustained much damage, and its lights had actually re­ mained on, even under water. The lives o f the firemen, however, were greatly endangered.

remained stunned and inside. A c­ cording to the news article. B eck­ ing had hit his head against the car and sustained a gash to his fore­ head. Two o f the firefighters who had been traveling with this driver dove back into the water, dragged him out o f the car and laid him on shore where artificial respiration was applied.

These two rescuers, Charles Buchanan and Legrand Leicht, were later presented by PJFD with a commendation for their heroism.

The commendation was prepared by an appointed city committee that was asked to express in a res­ olution the appreciation o f the city’ s fire department for heroic actions taken by the two to rescue their fellow firemen.

A letter to Port’ s fire depart­ ment, signed by committee m em ­ bers Jacob Lehn, J. Bueta Clark, and Albert J. D ecker and dated January 9, 1933, states that Buchanan and Leicht rescued Rus­ sell Becking, John Fox, Arthur A c­ cordino, and Harry Shewchuk, saving them from drowning on the evening o f October 12, 1932. It re­ spectfully suggests the adoption by the fire department o f the follow ­ ing resolution: “WHEREAS in returning from the Fireman’ s Parade at Jefferson­ ville on the evening o f October 12, 1932, Russell Becking, John Fox, Arthur A ccordino and Harry Shewchuk met with an accident wherein the automobile in which they were riding plunged into Lake Jefferson with the result that due to their being entangled in the wreck­ age they were in imminent danger o f drowning; And W HEREAS Charles Buchanan and Legrand Leicht, members o f Engine Company No. 4, and Fowler H ose No. 3, at great danger to themselves plunged into the Lake and rescued their fellowfireman; RESOLVED that the offices and members o f the Fire Depart­ ment o f the City o f Port Jervis hereby express their high appreci­ ation o f the courage o f Messrs.

Buchanan and Leicht and o f the spirit o f self-sacrifice which they displayed and, to further express their feeling o f pride that, include

in their membership, are men who have so strikingly exemplified the best firematic tradition.”

Charles Elmer Buchanan and Legrand William “ Bucky”Leicht Charles Elmer Buchanan: Born January 1, 1909 in Port Jervis, NY. D ied September 8, 1988. Buried Pine Hill Cemetery, Sparrowbush, NY. Charles Elmer Buchanan lived at 106 Front Street, Port Jervis, NY at the time o f his W W II Army Registration in 1940, Serial #397. In the late 1940s he married Carrie M. Aber Buchanan, who had four children - Thomas F. Hazleton, Leonard H. Cooper, Barbara Jean Sutton, and Joyce M. Freund. He worked for the Street Department, City o f Port Jervis in his younger years, and in the yards for the Erie Railroad in his career. While in the Army, he served in W W II and was on the ground and served in battle during the Battle o f Normandy. One o f Charles Elmer Buchanan's broth­ ers (James Lester Buchanan) served as C hief o f Port Jervis Fire Department from 1942-1953.

Legrand William “ Bucky”L e­ icht: Born July 23, 1909 in Port Jervis, NY. D ied D ecem ber 5, 1978. Buried in Hainesville C em e­ tery, NJ. Legrand William “ Bucky” Leicht was born to William and Etta Leicht at St. Francis Hospital, Port Jervis on July 23, 1909. He was a lifetime resident o f the area and lived at 15 Lyman Street at the time o f his death. Legrand worked for the Erie Lackawanna Railroad and he and his w ife had a small restaurant on Front Street/Jersey Avenue, K ay’ s Lunch. It was through his work on the railroad that Legrand regis­ tered for military service in 1940, Serial #506, and assisted in sup­ plying needed military supplies as a citizen. Legrand was a member o f First Presbyterian Church o f Port Jervis and a life member o f Delaware Engine Co. No. 2. His wife was Carolyn “Kay”Kent L e­ icht. He had two sons, William and Kenneth Leicht, and one daughter Sandra Leicht Scott, all born at home in Port Jervis, NY. His sis­ ters were Mary and Sarah.

Rabbit Rescued from Working House Fire in Port Schuyler COFONIE, NY - On October 8th, multiple calls for a reported structure fire began flow ing into the Colonie Emergency Com m u­ nications Center and Albany County Emergency Comm unica­ tions Center for 213 8th Avenue.

Due to the location o f the fire, the City o f Watervliet, Watervliet Arsenal, City o f Cohoes, Green Island, Schuyler Eieights and Menands Fire Departments, along with C olonie EM S were all dis­ patched at the same time, as the location was a borderline call.

As units began to call en route, heavy fire blew from the 'Bravo' side o f the structure, send­ ing a thick black column o f smoke into the afternoon sky that was visible for miles. The chief o f the Schuyler Eieights Fire Depart­ ment, who lived right down the street, immediately transmitted the Signal 30 for a working struc­ ture fire.

The city o f Watervliet's engine and truck company quickly ar­ rived on scene and declared a Sig­ nal 30 for a confirmed working structure fire, with heavy fire showing from the 'Bravo' side o f the structure with extension into the roof. Firefighters immediately deployed multiple hand lines down the driveway and quickly began to knock down the heavy fire condition as additional crews made entry to the home and began to conduct a primary search for anybody inside o f the structure.

As firefighters continued to work knocking down the heavy fire condition from the outside o f the structure, heavy fire blew through the roof in the front o f the building. Additional units began arriving on scene and assisted with conducting fire suppression.

Cohoes FD firefighters made their way to the r o o f o f the structure utilizing Truck 1 from the city o f Watervliet to conduct vertical ventilation.

Before firefighters began to vent the roof, they utilized the

master streams on the truck com ­ pany and quickly knocked down the heavy fire condition in the front o f the structure. As firefighters at­ tempted to step o ff onto the roof they noticed that it was soft from the heavy fire load below. The bucket was then utilized to cut the r oof and vent the super-heated toxic gases trapped on the second floor and in the attic area.

When firefighters inside the house were conducting a primary search, they discovered a rabbit and rescued it from the home while other firefighters began to pull the ceilings throughout the house where they discovered the fire had been traveling along the beams o f the structure. As additional crews made their way inside the structure to the second floor and began to pull ceilings, they discovered that they still had a fire condition in the attic and quickly began to knock it down with a hand line. Firefighters set up a blitz fire on the side o f the house and continued to co o l the siding down.

As crews were conducting overhaul on the 'Bravo' side o f the structure, one firefighter stepped into a burned-out area o f the porch and fell through. Firefighters that were working nearby assisted the uninjured firefighter out o f the hole.

Firefighters continued to con ­ duct overhaul o f the badly dam­ aged structure for an extended period o f time. During the second­ ary search o f the home, they dis­ covered a cat and an additional rabbit that did not survive.

The Town o f Colonie's Fire Services arrived on scene and began to conduct their investiga­ tion into what caused the fire. No injuries were reported, and the fire is currently under investigation.

H enrietta Home Deemed U nlivable A fte r Fire HENRIETTA, NY - On Wednesday, October 26th at 7:45 P.M., Henrietta firefighters were dispatched to a house fire at 220 Cheney Parkway. Units were on location within three minutes to find smoke coming from the home. The fire was under con­ trol within 20 minutes and there were no injuries reported.

The house was deemed unlivable due to smoke and heat damage. The Red Cross was assisting the occupants. The Monroe County Fire Bureau was investigating the cause. Also assisting at the scene were CHS Ambulance and the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

Working Box Truck Fire in New Windsor NEW WINDSOR, NY - Vails Gate FD responded to a report of a working truck fire on Jackson Ave., October 21st. Car 2 ar­ rived and confirmed an active working truck fire. The driver of the vehicle was out of the truck when firefighters arrived.

Vails Gate firefighters used hand lines to extinguish the fire while New Windsor Police blocked off the roadway. The fire is under investigation by the New Windsor PD.

They held an open house at their south station and a block party at their main station later in the evening. The block party featured various food vendors, two bands, axe throwing, bounce houses and a live burn demonstration.

The Coeymans Hollow Fire Department hosted an extrication drill on Tuesday, September 20th. Members of the Westerlo Fire Department joined in on the training. Members trained with their own equipment, and also tested out new battery operated tools.

Fire in Vacant Newburgh Building Under Investigation NEWBURGH, NY - On N o ­ vem ber 1st, Newburgh FD re­ sponded to 225 Third Street for a reported structure fire.

Firefighters arrived and found smoke and fire showing from the basement area, and Newburgh Car 4 requested a second-alarm sounded. Firefighters used hand lines to contain the fire that spread to the first floor. Air National Guard FD was also requested to the scene.

place, Newburgh received an alarm o f fire for 145 Renwick Street. Car 4 directed West Point and Cronomer Valley Fire Depart­ ments to that scene, while Car 3 requested Central Hudson also to Renwick Street.

Firefighters on Third St. checked the r oof area o f the resi­ dence while Central Hudson was

called to Third Street as well. M o­ bile Life ALS stood by at Third Street during the incident. Mutual Aid was released after the fire was brought under control. Cronomer Valley FD stood by at the public safety building before responding to Renwick Street.

The fire is currently under in­ vestigation. The building was un­ occupied at the time o f the fire.

Com m ercial Dumpster Fire Threatens Ravena House RAVENA, NY - Just 10 minutes after returning to the firehouse from a fire on Main Street in Ravena, fire crews were dis­ patched for a report of a fire at 27 McConnell Ave. at 12:55 P.M. on October 29th. The caller stated that there was a large dumpster on fire close to a house, and nobody was answer­ ing the door at the home. “We actually saw the smoke from the station, so we knew right away that we had a working fire,” said Chief Kevin Phillips of the Ravena FD. He said the large roll-off dumpster was full and engulfed in flames ap­ proximately 10-feet from the house. Crews pulled two hand­ lines and knocked the fire down with no extension to the house. Debris from the dumpster was removed as firefighters continued to wet down the debris. Phillips said neighbors called in the fire and nobody was inside the home at the time of the fire. Ravena Fire was assisted on scene by Coeymans Fire. There were no injuries reported, and crews quickly packed up and returned to service.

W orkers Extinguish Accidental Fire on Roof of Ravena Home RAVENA, NY - A house on Main Street in Ravena was saved after a fire broke out on the roof.

Fire crews were dispatched to a reported structure fire at 12 Main St. in Ravena just after noon on Saturday, October 29th, for re­ ports o f smoke com ing from a room inside the home.

C h ief Mark D eyo o f Coeymans Fire was first to arrive on scene and stated that there was an active smoke condition visible from the home where the roof connects to the exterior o f the house.

C h ief Kevin Phillips o f the Ravena Fire Department arrived soon after. “There were roof workers on scene that were using an old torch and tar method to patch the roof,”Phillips said.

Fie said the workers had just left for a break and received word o f a fire the broke out and rushed back to the home to extinguish the fire. Phillips said the workers took a hose to the r oof and knocked the fire down as fire crews were arriv­ ing. “They did a go od jo b at pre­ venting it,”he said.

tion o f the wall to check for any fire extension, which was not found.

“It’ s an old-style Victorian balloon-frame construction, so you have the wide open walls and you don’ t know if the fire could have traveled or not,” he said.

“It’ s a three-story house so we had people on each story just to check to make sure the fire didn’ t travel the wall and go upstairs.”

Ravena, Coeym ans and New Baltimore Fire Departments were assisted on scene with Albany County Sheriff’ s Ambulance, A l­ bany County Paramedics, Albany County Sheriffs and Coeymans Police.

There were two homeowners inside the home at the time o f the fire who were able to call 911 and evacuate.

Three-Alarm Fire in Vacant Rochester Hotel ROCHESTER, NY - On Wednesday, November 2nd at 6:34 P.M., the Rochester Fire Department responded to the former Rochester Riverside Hotel at 120 East Main Street for a report of smoke coming from the building. Units arrived on location and found smoke coming from the vacant seven-story hotel with an attached two-story banquet facility. Crews forced entry through the loading dock and found that two rooms in the utility area of the first floor had a well involved fire, which spread to a portion of a banquet room, located above the point of origin. There was a heavy smoke condition throughout a large portion of the building. The blaze went to three alarms and took about four hours to bring under control. The R.F.D. was investigating the cause and there were no injuries reported.

Crews B attle Massive Structure Fire on Allen St. in Jamestown JAMESTOWN, N Y - On N o­ vember 16th, the Jamestown FD was dispatched to 1061 Allen Street. A Jamestown police officer went on scene and reported a working fire.

From the begin­ ning, crews worried about Hie possibility o f Hie fire spreading to other nearby loca­ tions, as well as possi­ ble explosions.

Board o f Public Utilities workers were called to the scene almost immedi­ ately to cut high-tension lines near the location. In addition, barricades were placed around the site o f the fire due to heavy traffic from onlookers who wanted to view the destruction.

So dangerous was the incident that employees in the Artone building at 1089 Allen St. were forced to exit Hie location later in the afternoon.

Mutual aid departments from Falconer and Celoron were called in for their ladder trucks. Car 1 re­ quested a tanker task force which con­ sisted o f Gerry, Kennedy, Frewsburg, Sinclairville, Panama, Ashville and Kiantone. Fakewood's ladder truck stood by at Jamestown Station 1. The cause o f the fire is under investiga­ tion.

Firefighter Struck

by Vehicle During Brush Fire Call in Newburgh NEWBURGH, NY - Cronomer Valley FD responded to a brush fire on Catalpa Road and Winding Lane on November 11th.

Mutual Aid requested to the scene included Winona Lake and Good Will Fire Departments. A firefighter was struck by a ve­ hicle as he was straightening hose on Chestnut Lane. Town of Newburgh Police and EMS were called to the scene, and on arrival EMS requested a MedEvac launched. Good Will FD set up the landing zone at the old Shoprite Parking lot nearby.

EMS transported the firefighter to the landing zone who was then transferred to Westchester Medical Center. Town of Newburgh Police are investigating the accident. The brush fire was contained and extinguished.

Two-Car MVA w ith Injuries in Port Jervis PORT JERVIS, NY - Port Jervis Police and Fire Departments, as well as PJ Volunteer Ambulance Corps, responded to an accident at the intersection of East Main and Jersey Avenues on Friday evening, October 7th. PJPD investigated what was a two-car accident at the intersection. Port Jervis Police Chief William Worden said a vehicle traveling east on East Main Street, operated by an 18-year-old male driver, had pro­ ceeded to attempt a left turn into Water’s Edge. This caused a frontal collision with a vehicle traveling westerly on East Main Street, driven by a 76-year-old male. The 18-year-old sustained injuries and was transported to Bon Secours Com­ munity Hospital for evaluation.

Structure Fire Deemed Accidental in Jamestown

JAMESTOWN, NY - On October 27th, the Jamestown Fire De­ partment was dispatched to 216 West 7th St. for a reported structure fire. Car 1 went on scene, reported a working struc­ ture fire, and requested an off-shift of 15+1. The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental and electrical in nature.

Unconscious Driver Given Narcan After MVA in Newburgh NEWBURGH, NY - Newburgh Fire Department responded to a reported MVA with one driver unconscious on October 30th, at Wisner Ave. and DuPont Ave. City of Newburgh Po­ lice also responded. The unconscious driver was given Nar­ can by police and transported to Montefiore-St. Luke's Hospital by Mobile Life ALS. Firefighters checked the vehi­ cles for hazards before clearing the scene. City of Newburgh Police are investigating the incident.

The station has a 24/7 staffed engine, which has dramatically improved response times in the rapidly growing southwest por­ tion of the town. After five years of planning and construction, the new facility features living quarters and a new training tower which will serve the district for decades to come.

Police Officers Injured Following Crash in Wyandanch WYANDANCH, NY - Around 2:15 P.M. on Tuesday October 18th, emergency personnel were called to a crash on Straight Path and Washington Avenue in Wyandanch. Units arrived to find two vehicles overturned, with one vehicle on fire. As a result of the accident, four police officers and two civilians were hurt and sent to local hospitals, one of which was flown via helicopter. It is unknown how the accident occurred.

the patient, who was not breathing at the time o f removal. D espite the efforts o f the responders, the pa­ tient was pronounced dead at the scene. Dix H ills Handles A fternoon K itchen Fire DIX HILLS, NY - The Dix Hills and Deer Park Fire Departments were activated for a reported house fire on November 3rd, just before 1:30 P.M. First arriving units discovered smoke showing from a two-story private dwelling, and after an in­ vestigation it was determined that there was an extinguished kitchen fire with possible extension. Additional manpower was requested, along with a Town of Huntington Fire Marshal.

Under the control of 1st Assistant Chief Tepe, firefighters quickly ventilated the structure and discovered the fire did not extend to any other part of the house. One dry attack line was deployed for precaution. Units were up within the hour, and there were no reported injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

MASSAPEQUA, NY - In the afternoon hours o f October 9th, the Massapequa Fire Department re­ sponded to reports o f a house on fire on Clearwater Avenue. Upon arrival o f responding chiefs, the dispatcher advised them that they had an ex­ captain on scene reporting a working fire.

Upon the arrival o f 6301, he transmitted the working fire. On ar­ rival o f Engine 6315, they laid in from the hydrant on Edgewater Av­ enue and stretched a line to the 2" side to knock down the large volume fire. A second line was stretched

from 6315 to the interior o f the twostory private dwelling, and a third line was stretched from 6311 to the interior o f the dwelling.

Ladder 978 positioned and op­ erated on the 1/4 side, and Tower Ladder 632 positioned on the 1/2 side and operated their master stream to knock down any fire that was unable to be reached via a hose line.

Mutual aid was requested from

Amityville FD for a FAST (1-1-5), South Farmingdale FD for a work­ ing truck (978), Seaford for an en­ gine to the scene (682), and Wantagh FD for a working truck(692).

Standby units consisted o f Levittown for a Ladder (626) and ambu­ lance (6213).

Units operated under the com ­ mand o f Chief o f Department William Monjardo (6300). The cause o f the fire is under investiga­ tion, and there were no reported in­ juries.

Plane Down in West Babylon WEST BABYLON, NY - Just before 2:00 P.M. on Saturday No­ vember 5th, the East Farmingdale Fire Company and Republic Airport Crash Fire Rescue were dispatched to a reported plane down in the Beth Moses Cemetery. Upon arrival, emergency crews discovered a small aircraft down in the cemetery. Two souls on board the aircraft had self-extricated and were evalu­ ated by EMS and transported to an area hospital with minor in­ juries. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

US and Canadian Firefighters Train at 2022 Joey D Seminar YAPHANK, NY - During the weekend o f Friday, Novem ber 4th, to Sunday, November 6th, the Lieutenant Joseph DiBernardo Foundation (Joey D Foundation for short) held their annual train­ ing seminar on Long Island.

The two days o f “ H DT”train­ ing were held on site at the Suf­ folk County Fire Academy. These training days included various hands-on courses taught by world class instructors from across the fire service. They included but were not limited to advanced auto extrication techniques, residential and com m ercial fires, truck ops, engine ops, man vs. machine, and more.

N ew this year was also a hands-on training on train em er­ gencies. This train emergency course is a recent addition at the academy thanks to the Suffolk Fire Academy receiving old Long Island Railroad (LIRR) Cars. This course had firefighters go through

EMS was on site courtesy o f Flan­ ders Northampton Ambulance for the duration o f the training to treat any injuries that may have o c ­ curred. Staff also ensured that all students remained properly hy­ drated throughout the hot training event.

On Sunday, a seminar was held o ff site where in-person lec­ tures were given on various topics in the fire service. Overall, the event was another great success.

How do you think that you would respond to that radio transmission? It is not that easy.

How would you feel if you were saying, "I am so frustrated. I am screaming out for help and nobody hears me. They ask how I am doing and when I tell them that I need help or feel depressed, they just tell me to get some help. GREAT ADVICE, what do you think I was doing? The other great advice is to 'snap out o f if.

Why should I keep going, if nobody notices that I am alive? Nobody really knows what I am going through."

There are times that people may make it obvious that they are hurting, and there are times where we may have to actually be observant.

Do we really pay attention to oth­ ers in our life? Do we know when someone is not behaving as normal?

Are we willing to ask them what is happening in their lives? Do we make time in our lives to sit and help others?

Or are you so wrapped up in your own life that nobody else matters?

I have seen many people who say that real men do not discuss it, or real men do not cry. I tell you, only a real man can cry and is willing to get the help they need. Guess what, many people may be feeling the same way, but will be too stubborn to get the help they need and then they will wonder why it may develop into depression or PTSD. Please understand that 20°o o f people have a mental health issue, and that police officers and firefighters have a fivefold chance o f developing PTSD or depression compared to the civilian population, according to the American College o f Emergency Physicians. We also experience or see more trauma that the general popula­ tion and everything may feel like they pile up on us, if we do not ask for as­ sistance as we experience it.

There are times when you may be overwhelmed by circumstances that you are going through. You may be in distress, but I will tell you that the sit­ uation is only temporary. It may not feel that way and it may feel like the end o f the world, but please reach out for help. You are worth it. Do not lis­ ten to people who do not give you proper advice. Find people that are willing to assist you. Find people will­ ing to sit with you to listen and en­ courage. Your life may seem like this situation, but the situation is only tem­

porary. You are strong to seek out as­ sistance. It is alright to cry. Sometimes that is the only way that people know that things are overwhelming for you.

Some o f the things that may con­ tribute to wanting to take our life may be untreated or undiagnosed depres­ sion. Depression, anxiety, and sub­ stance problems, especially when unaddressed, increase risk for suicide, according the American Association o f Suicidology, but most people who manage their mental health conditions can go on with their lives. When we have heart problems or cancer, we seek assistance, so why not when we may need assistance handling life issues or things that make us feel overwhelmed.

The risk factors and behaviors, ac­ cording to the American Association o f Suicidology are: Risk factors Risk factors are characteristics or conditions that increase the chance that a person may try to take their life.

Health

Mental health conditions -Depression -Substance use problems -Bipolar disorder -Schizophrenia -Personality traits o f aggression, mood changes and poor relationships -Conduct disorder -Anxiety disorders -Serious physical health conditions including pain -Traumatic brain injury

Something to look out for when concerned that a person may be suici­ dal is a change in behavior or the pres­ ence o f entirely new behaviors. This is o f sharpest concern if the new or changed behavior is related to a painful event, loss, or change. Most people who take their lives exhibit one or more warning signs, either through what they say or what they do.

It has spiral binding and plastic page protectors over the front and back covers. The covers have color photos. The rest o f the book is o f quality black and white photos. Compilation o f the his­ tory was started back in the 1960’ s by three men, two o f the now deceased. This book is en­

tirely written by Bill Hattersley with the help o f Galen K. Thomaier, who is retired from the SFD and is the SFD historian. I personally know Mr. Hattersley and photographed with him in 1986 when the International Fire Buffs Association had a conven­ tion in Seattle. I know for a fact that he is a very thorough person when it comes to photography and detail, especially on apparatus in­ formation and history. He seeks to get the correct information, whether personally or from reli­ able sources, all o f which are named in the back o f the book. It is one o f the most comprehensive histories o f apparatus that I have ever seen!

There are 12 chapters and an appendix. The first nine chapters cover eras. Chapter 10 deals with fireboats (of which the SFD had some o f the most powerful ones), and Chapter 11 deals with ch ief’ s cars and air/medic units. Chapter 12 deals with stations and compa­ nies from 1890 -2021. The photos are flawless and because it is a his­ tory book, you will learn a lot about the vehicles. cause information may be on the pages before, but is there som e­ place. The SFD had some interest­ ing rigs, including many Kenworths. One o f the reasons was that Kenworth was built in Seattle. Some apparatus bodies were built in the SFD shop and others by Heiser, a local builder.

An extended interview o f Mr. Heiser by Bill revealed a wealth of information.

Other points to bring up was the first turbo charged, an Ameri­ can LaFrance aerial and it’ s story (powered by a Boeing 325 horse­ power power plant), as well as an Aero Chief platform later con­ verted to a rear-mount aerial.

There is mention on city service trucks being converted to service aerials when replaced and tractordrawn aerials which later were de­ signed with tandem axle tractors.

You can probably guess why! Ap­ paratus numbers accompany many o f the photos, plus the appendix is loaded with just about anything you ’ d want to know along this line.

For the price, this is certainly a book that history buffs and appa­ ratus buffs would not want to be without!
