Castleton, NY - On October 29th at 8:51 P.M., the Rensselaer County 911 dispatch center took multiple calls for a reported explosion and fully involved house at 19 Green Avenue in the village of Castleton. With the fire department only 100-feet away from the scene, firefighters arrived quickly and hooked up to a hydrant at the end of the driveway.

Early-Morning Blaze Destroys Centuries-Old Historic Building in Troy Troy, NY - On Monday, November 4th at 4:51 A.M., Rensselaer County 911 dispatchers took calls for a reported house fire at 867 2nd Avenue in North Lansingburgh, at the former Freihofer mansion. The callers reported the structure to be heavily involved.

Troy FD Engines 1 and 4 quickly raced off to the scene while the Battalion Chief instructed Engines 6 and 3 to also respond to the scene until the first arriving unit could confirm the callers' reports. Engines 4 and 1 arrived on scene and called the Signal 30 for heavy fire showing from the second floor of a vacant building.

The building, which was once part of the Freihofer's mansion complex, sat vacant for over two decades and had been deemed condemned a few years prior. The fire department marked it with a red-X placard, indicating that it was too dangerous for first responders to enter.

Engine-4 connected to a fire hydrant by the parking lot of the nearby Price Chopper supermarket and laid in their LDH. Trucks 1 and 2 quickly set up on both sides of the building while additional firefighters cut an access hole in a fence that led to the rear of the building. Police shut down 2nd Avenue from 124th Street to 126th Street while firefighters worked on scene.

Crews used multiple hand lines to knock down the fire from the exterior. Once Trucks 1 and 2 were able to establish a water sup-

JUMP TO FILE #110819100 ply, both went into master stream operations and pumped 1500-gallons-per-minute onto the fire. As firefighters worked, a large portion of the first and second floors collapsed in the rear of the building into the basement, sending a ton of smoke and embers into the morning sky.

Crews were able to bring the blaze under control at approximately 6:30 A.M. and then cautiously began making their way onto the porch, removing boards on the window to check for extension and also to see if anyone was inside the building. Firefighters could see that the entire structure had collapsed in the center when they removed the plywood from the front door and a large amount of water poured out.

Although firefighters did not find anyone inside the structure, there was a large area by the rear of the building that appeared to have squatters living in it. An emergency demolition of the historic building was ordered by the city, which was done that same afternoon.

Fire Investigators remained on scene until the late hours of the morning investigating the cause of the blaze. No firefighters were injured on scene, and the cause of the fire is under investigation at this time.

Firefighters Recover Body of Missing Man in City of Newburgh Lake

Newburgh, NY - The City of Newburgh Police Dept. and City of Newburgh Fire Dept. were dispatched on the morning of November 6th to Muchattoes Lake, near the Lake Street Apartment complex, for a missing person search. Orange Lake and Vails Gate Fire Departments were called in to assist with their boats. Vails Gate firefighters entered the lake and found the badly decomposed body of a male. According to officials, the body is believed to be an elderly man that had been reported missing one year ago. The identity of the man has not yet been released. City of Newburgh Police are investigating the incident.

Electrical Issue Causes Basement Fire in Livonia

Livonia, NY - On Friday, November 8th at 7:56 P.M., the Livonia, Hemlock and Lakeville Fire Departments, along with Livonia EMS, responded to smoke in a residence at 5084 East Lake Road. Livonia Fire Chief Rich Alexander arrived on location, found the house charged with smoke and declared a working fire. Further investigation found an electrical issue and a fire in the basement. The fire was quickly extinguished and no injuries were reported. Also responding to the scene were Scottsville and East Avon (FAST). Scottsville was filling in for East Avon while they were on the scene of a large propane leak on Henty Road in Avon.

California: Paul Rotondaro, 36 Rank: Fire Captain Incident Date: October 2, 2019 Death Date: October 2, 2019 Fire Department: CAL FIRE, Merced County Fire Initial Summary: On Wednesday, October 2, 2019, Captain Paul Rotondaro, while on-duty, left the Merced County fire station to go to the Usona fire station. Driving a Ford Ranger, Rotondaro was hit by another truck, causing his truck to leave the road and catch fire, killing him instantly.

Washington: Christian Dean Johnson, 55 Rank: Assistant Fire Chief Incident Date: September 1, 2019 Death Date: October 2, 2019 Fire Department: Okanogan Fire Department/Okanogan County Fire District 3 Initial Summary: On Sunday, September 1, 2019, the Okanogan Fire Department/Okanogan County Fire District 3 responded to the Spring Coulee wildland fire. Assistant Chief Christian Dean Johnson and another firefighter were in a brush truck on the north end of the fire when the flames overtook them. The firefighter with Johnson was able to outrun the fire, but Johnson was unable to escape. The other firefighter came back to treat him and called for help. Johnson was airlifted to the Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, WA, where he died on Wednesday, October 2, 2019, from the burn injuries he sustained in the fire.

New York: Dale Jaynes, 72 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: September 16, 2019 Death Date: October 1, 2019 Fire Department:Burdett Fire Department Initial Summary: On Monday, September 16, 2019, Firefighter Dale Jaynes was working with his crew at a residential structure fire when he suffered a medical emergency. He was immediately taken to the hospital, where he passed away on Tuesday, October 1, 2019.

Texas: Greg Garza, 49 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: October 15, 2019 Death Date: October 15, 2019 Fire Department: San Antonio Fire Department Initial Summary: On Tuesday, October 15, 2019, Firefighter Greg Garza responded to an electrical incident at the Comfort Suites. Garza returned to the apparatus to retrieve some equipment and was attempting to exit the fire apparatus when he tripped getting out of the truck and was hit by an oncoming vehicle. He went into traumatic arrest, was transported and passed away at the hospital.

Texas: Steven Paul Henderson, 60 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: October 7, 2019 Death Date: October 12, 2019 Fire Department: Louise Volunteer Fire Department Initial Summary: On Monday, October 7, 2019, Firefighter Steven Henderson and another firefighter were returning from a fire call in a tanker truck when they stopped alongside the road to inspect the front tires.

While outside the vehicle, another firefighter from the same fire department driving his personal pick-up truck, who was also at the scene of the fire call and left shortly after Henderson, did not see the truck parked in the roadway or the two firefighters standing outside of it and subsequently hit both Henderson and the other firefighter. Henderson was immediately transported by LifeFlight to the Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, in Houston, where, on Saturday, October 12, 2019, he succumbed to the injuries sustained in the accident. The other firefighter who was hit had non-life threatening injuries and was released from OakBend Medical Center in Richmond, TX.

Woman Suffers Burn Injuries in New Windsor House Fire New Windsor, NY - The Salisbury Mills Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 39 Lake Side Drive near Beaver Dam Lake on No- JUMP TO FILE# vember 8th.

111119102 On arrival, crews found heavy fire showing through the roof of the onestory structure. A second-alarm was immediately sounded, bringing in the Vails Gate FD as the FAST, along with the Cornwall, Washingtonville and Chester Fire Departments.

New Windsor EMS personnel transported one burn victim to the landing zone for a Medevac, which was set up by the New Windsor FD. New Windsor police officers handled traffic control during the incident.

Massive Blaze Destroys Structure in New Haven

New Haven, NY - On Monday, October 21st at 6:40 A.M., New Haven firefighters were assisted by the Mexico, Scriba and Novelis Fire Departments at a fully involved structure fire on County Route 51A in New Haven. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The photo was taken by New Haven Assistant Chief Dennis Butterfield before first-due arrived.

Battle of the Bravest Charity Hockey Game Continues Mission of Giving Cancer the Boot Binghamton, NY - From a frozen pond in Binghamton to the Ice House Sports Complex, the Battle of the Bravest Charity Hockey Game has brought together a community that has raised and donated $42,167 to cancer research. Thanks to the kindness and commitment of so many great people, the event will continue on Sunday, March 22, 2020.

The Battle of the Bravest has brought together an entire community of firefighters, friends and families with a common goal of giving cancer the boot. One-hundred-percent of all donations collected through the event have been donated to The Retired Professional

Despite these efforts being geared towards "firefighter cancers", everyone will benefit from

these efforts because as we all know, cancer does not discriminate.

NYS EMS Director Visits Brighton Volunteer Ambulance Brighton, NY - Brighton Volunteer Ambulance (BVA) recently had the privilege of a visit by NYS Dept. of Health Bureau of Emergency Medical Services and Trauma Systems (BEMSTS) Director Ryan P. Greenberg, along with the Western New York/Rochester District Chief/Investigator Ross Zastrow.

The purpose of the visit was two-fold. Director Greenberg was enroute to Niagara Falls for a meeting the following day. He made time to stop by BVA to see our recently expanded base. He was unable to make it to the ribbon-cutting last November and wanted to take this opportunity to see our facility first hand. BVA's base grew from 4,500-square-feet to 11,000-square-feet in 2018. The cost was $1.9 Million. It also offered him an opportunity to include BVA in his "Listening Tour". The tour allows him the chance to talk to department officers and crews to get their input on what needs to be improved in NYS EMS, and how to keep people both working and volunteering for years to come.

Brighton Chief Cody Dean conducted the tour of the base including business offices, crew work areas with computer work stations, crew stand-by areas such as large "family room" settings with TV, a large kitchen with a table that seats 12, sleeping quarters for overnight crews and a "decompression room" for individual crew members following a difficult call. State Director Greenberg complimented BVA on the thought that went into the building layout to make an "inviting place" to come to work. He said that BVA obviously placed great thought into our system design and EMS structure, as our organization and call volume has grown.

BVA Chief Dean, NYS Director Greenberg and NYS District Chief Zastrow then went to the chief's office for discussion. Some of the topics covered included following IHI Triple Aim (methods to improve the patient's experience, improve health of the population, reduce per capita costs), Community Paramedicine and foundational programs, updates to NYS Public Health Code Part 800 and Article 30, addressing staff shortages (countywide), improved state funding of EMS training at all levels, the disproportionate balance between the billed amount and actual reimbursement, Licensure vs.

Certification, and a possible higher education standard.

Director Greenberg also had the opportunity to talk with the onduty crews. When asked if there was one thing that could be done to make a provider stay on the job longer, the topics discussed included bringing the Career EMS pay scale on par with police and career fire services, provide a better pension system for career and volunteer (i.e.: NYS Police & Fire Retirement System), grant

JUMP TO FILE #102219100 providers a License vs. Certificate, educate hospital staff on the complex knowledge base that all EMS personnel have and their abilities and “scope of practice�. Director Greenberg commented on the professionalism of the crews he met and the quality of patient care he has heard about concerning BVA. The visit concluded with a tour of the garage bays. BVA built an eight-bay garage to securely store its five ambulances and two Emergency Ambulance Service Vehicles in a controlled temperature environment.

BVA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization providing both Basic and Advanced Life Support EMS to the Town of Brighton, and mutual

aid services to the surrounding communities in Monroe County. At the request of the State of New York Division of Homeland Security and Emergency services, BVA provided an ambulance and ALS crews in response to the World Trade Center Attack on 9/11 and the Broome County floods.

BVA has a fleet of five ambulances and two Advanced Life Support SUV-type vehicles. A hybrid model of career and volunteer members provides staffing. We offer community education in CPR/AED and First Aid, and other specialized courses for EMS providers. BVA began serving the community in 1986 and responded to over 6100 calls in 2018.

Ulster Hose Co. #5 has participated in several joint active shooter trainings with Town of Ulster/City of Kingston ESU Teams. The Ulster Hose Rescue Task Force Team is made up of both EMTs and firemen who work solely with a team of police officers to provide aid to injured civilians within the warm zone of the active incident.

The EMTs provide basic life support and the firemen assist with the removal of the patient.

The New Baltimore FD held a rope rescue drill at the Hannacroix Preserve on Monday, October 14th. Members used the UTV to bring other firefighters and their equipment back into the woods, where they then simulated a rope rescue of two individuals down a hill inside the woods.

Mobile Life Support Services & Employees Participate in American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Walk New Windsor, NY - Mobile Life Support Services, the largest emergency medical provider in the Hudson Valley, was an event sponsor for this year’s American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on Sunday, October 20th, at Woodbury Common Premium Outlets.

The 24th annual event drew about 9,000 people on the morning of October 20th and raised about $439,000.

In addition to Mobile Life’s sponsorship, employees came out to support the cause. Emily Smith, Director of Human Resources, walked with her son’s ice hockey team, the West Point Junior Black Knights, who wore specially made pink jerseys for the event. EMT Jaylynn Henriquez was also there, coaching the Goshen cheerleading squad who energized the crowd at

JUMP TO FILE #102919112 the start of the walk. Public Relations Coordinator Tricia Mood handed out water to walkers at the Mobile Life Support Services water tent with a wonderful family who volunteered there for the 10th consecutive year.

“Making Strides is such an uplifting and inspiring event,” Mood said. “There is just so much unity and support for this amazing cause. We have all been touched by this disease in one way or another. Mobile Life Support Services is so proud to be part of the fight against breast cancer.”

The American Cancer Society started Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks to unite communities in the fight against the

disease. In addition to being a fundraiser for research, treatment and support, the events are very successful at raising awareness about breast cancer. Self examinations, annual mammograms and early detection are key in mitigating the disease. Today, Making Strides is the largest network of breast cancer events in the nation.

Mobile Life also participated in the American Cancer Society’s Real Men Wear Pink campaign during the month of October. Employees were encouraged to wear pink and post pictures on the company’s social media outlets along with a link to donate to the cause.

Paramedics, EMTs, supervisors, office staff, administrators and more, sported the pink in support of the cause.

Is it because we have been eating the same vegetables year in and year out? The green bean and sweet potato casseroles, the apple and cranberry sauces, and let’s not forget the wonderfully off putting dish that is overcooked brussels sprouts. It’s time we take a stand and start putting a little more effort into those “side dishes”. Let’s make them worthy of the center of the table, right next to the prime rib. Seems like a daunting task, but with some attention to detail and great ingredients, we can finally let the vegetables take center stage.

Great ingredients are the most important part of any recipe. They are the foundation to build flavors upon that will take a dish from good to great. When shopping for produce,

if the budget allows, it's best to buy organic. There are obvious reasons as to why, with the important one being better flavor. Organic produce has more antioxidants, which affects the taste, aroma and mouthfeel. In short, organic produce has more intense flavor than those grown conventionally. With that being said, we need to address the other ingredients which make up great recipes.

As with produce, the other elements of a dish must be the best we can afford. This is not to say all recipes need to break the bank, but rather we should focus on some key ingredients to help make the dish shine. Let’s take the recipe for ChileMaple Glazed Butternut Squash for instance. Maple syrup is something you should not skimp on, as it lays the groundwork for all the ingredients that follow. It's very easy to grab the bottle of “pancake syrup” instead because it may be half the price, but one look at the ingredient list and you will see why the real maple syrup makes sense. If a recipe contains many ingredients, read through it and decipher which ones will make or break a dish depending on the final goal and “splurge” on them.

Now that we know how to shop for ingredients, let’s talk a little about why certain ingredients work in a dish. In order for vegetables to shine, the recipes must have elements that excite our palate. It's not a hard fast rule, but there should be salt, fat and acid. There is no chance of achieving great flavor without the addition of salt. In fact, you can eliminate any other seasonings and yet still make a

great meal using only salt. It has the ability to enhance the other ingredients in the recipe, even in sweet applications like desserts. There are so many different kinds out there, but for the majority of recipes you may find, kosher is best.

The fat in a recipe is vital as well, especially in a vegetable dish since most vegetables don’t contain fat.

Among all the fats out there, extra virgin olive oil is best for most cooking techniques, aside from high heat applications like frying. In moderation, butter is also a delicious ingredient to carry flavor and add moisture as well. When buying butter, look for the unsalted, grass-fed variety. If you taste something and it seems like it's missing something, it's usually lack of an acidic component. Whether it comes from fruit, like lemon or vinegar, acid will help balance out the fat in a dish. It's also the component which makes us crave more of something. Just a squeeze of lemon on some roasted broccoli elevates the dish from home cooked to something you may find in a restaurant. With the Chile-Maple Glazed Butternut Squash recipe, the cider vinegar balances out the richness of the butter.

The elements of salt, fat and acid when applied to vegetables is what takes them from the corner of the table to the center of attention.

When you combine great ingredients with great presentation, any vegetable will hold its own next to the glazed ham or rib roast at the holiday dinner table!

Ingredients:

1 Large Butternut Squash ¼ Cup Maple Syrup 3 Tbs. Unsalted Grass-fed Butter 2 Tbs. Apple Cider Vinegar 1 Fresno Chile (substitute with jalapeno or shishito), sliced 6 Bay Leaves, preferably fresh Salt EVOO Procedure:

- Preheat oven to 450°F

- Cut the butternut squash in half, lengthwise, and scoop out the seeds - Using a peeler, peel the skin of the squash until there is only bright orange flesh

- Rub all sides of squash with EVOO and salt, place on a roasting pan cut side

down. Cook in oven for 1520 minutes.

- While the squash cooks, combine the maple syrup, butter, vinegar and chile in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Bring to a simmer and reduce to a syrup, about 5 minutes.

- After the squash has cooked for 15-20 minutes, remove from the oven.

Place squash on cutting

board and carefully slice into ¼” slices. Using a spatula, arrange the squash back on the roasting pan in a shingle like pattern. Stuff with bay leaves, brush with glaze and place back into the oven.

- Cook squash for another 30-40 minutes, brushing with glaze every 10 minutes or so. Remove and sprinkle with a pinch of salt.

Two-Alarm Fire Displaces Multiple Residents in City of Newburgh Newburgh, NY - City of Newburgh firefighters were dispatched around 4:44 P.M. on Saturday, October 19th, to a reported structure fire at 44 Farrington Street.

Crews arrived to find a fully involved fire on the top two floors of a three-story, wood-frame structure. Newburgh Command called for a second-alarm and requested mutual aid to respond to the scene from the West Point, Air National Guard and Cronomer Valley Fire Departments.

Firefighters used hand lines to knock the blaze down, which was declared under control around 4:58 P.M. Crews remained on scene for several additional hours

Baby It’s Cold Out There EMS ISSUE

'Tis the season for a myriad of cold-weather emergencies.

Every winter hundreds of Americans are injured or killed by exposure to cold, vehicle accidents on wintry roads, and fires caused by the improper use of heaters.

The seasonal increase in fireinjuries is due to the use of heating devices and combustible materials. The heating sources combined with all of the closed windows to keep the cold out definitely makes things more risky for carbon monoxide poisoning.

Then there are falls on ice and exposure to the elements; And certainly we can’t forget about hazardous driving situations and car accidents, which can also affect emergency response vehicles.

Now is the time to refresh your skills treating and recognizing all stages of hypothermia from mild to severe. Any patient with a body temp of less than 95degrees should be suspected and treated for exposure. Be sure to take into account age, medical conditions, whether there was submersion or other wet conditions, drugs (both prescribed and illicit), and any use of alcohol.

Mild cases can include shivering, increased heart rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure, slurred speech and loss of motor coordination.

Moderate hypothermia is usually when the patient’s body temp is between 86 to 93 degrees, shivering stops and cold diuresis (frequent cold induced urination), which can lead to dehydration. In severe hypothermia the body temp can be below 86-degrees, the patient may be comatose, non-reactive to normal reflexes, exhibit depressed vital signs, have heart arrhythmias, fixed and dilated pupils, and MAY even appear to be dead. Hypothermia and frostbite can be life or limb threatening.

Get the victim of hypothermia out of the cold environment and shelter them from wind. Remove any wet clothing, gently rewarm with blankets, and in mild cases, insulated moist heat packs — never rewarm frostbite if there is a chance of refreezing. Remove constricting jewelry. Provide oxygen and/or CPR if necessary.

If the patient is conscious, do NOT administer alcohol, caffeinated beverages or allow them to smoke.

Don’t rub frostbite, as you can cause tissue damage. Remember that NO ONE IS DEAD UNTIL THEY ARE WARM AND DEAD. Carbon Monoxide poisoning can be very difficult to recognize, as many times the only warning comes from a working CO detector in a house. According to the CDC, carbon monoxide kills more Americans than any other acute toxicant. The most important response is to get a victim of CO poisoning into fresh air and deliver oxygen. Many CO poisoning symptoms can mimic the flu, complete with headaches. The proverbial red coloring is a very dangerous late-stage sign of CO poisoning. Be prepared to administer CPR if necessary. Immediate transport to the hospital is vital since the methods of oxygen delivery can range from a simple face mask to a hyperbaric chamber.

Ice and snow related falls and vehicular accidents occur frequently during the winter months and can cause obvious physical injuries including broken bones, bleeding, head injuries and other visible trauma. Severe trauma combined with cold weather can also lead to hypothermia. Going through your ABCs, treating and packaging the patient is not enough; it’s necessary to check and monitor for internal injuries.

And it's very important to learn patient history — never assume that the fall or auto accident was caused only by icy conditions, don’t rule out syncope, seizures, or medications that could cause dizziness or impaired mental function.

All emergency response personnel are exposed to the dangers of cold weather related injuries as well; we are not invincible. Our vehicles travel the same hazardous roads, or worse, that all the traffic accidents occur on and we are out there even when a state-of-emergency keeps most people indoors.

The ice that accumulates at a fire scene threatens everyone including EMS personnel, firefighters and police officers.

Finally, response to outdoor emergencies means standing in the cold weather elements so it’s necessary to be aware of wind chill.

Use gloves and hats as necessary.

Drink plenty of warm fluids between calls, but avoid caffeine or alcohol, as that can affect your body’s response to the cold. Don’t stay out in the cold unless it's necessary.

Chimney Fire with Extension in Livonia

Livonia, NY - On Friday, November 15th at 9:10 P.M., Livonia, Hemlock and Lakeville Fire Departments, along with East Avon as the FAST, were dispatched to a chimney fire at 6673 Big Tree Road in Livonia. Livonia Deputy Fire Chief Blake Fennell arrived on location and reported a fire in a wall in the area of the chimney. The fire was quickly extinguished and the assignment was reduced to Livonia and Hemlock fire units. There were no injuries reported.

Firefighters quickly knocked down a house fire shortly after police officers rescued the homeowner with a ladder on October 21st.

Coeymans Police Officers Rescue Man from House Fire with Ladder Coeymans, NY - One man was rescued by Coeymans police officers on Monday, October 21st, after a fire broke out at his home in Coeymans.

First responders were called to 19 Westerlo Street around 3:45 P.M. According to a post on the Coeymans Police PBA’s Facebook page, Coeymans Police Officers arrived at the scene within approximately one minute of the call being dispatched and found heavy smoke pushing from the second floor and roof of the structure. Fire was also pushing through the rear window.

Coeymans Police Officers Daniel Braden, E.J. Seney and Kelly Arnold were the first to arrive on scene and noticed a resident and his dog on the second story front porch of the home, unable to escape due to the fire conditions.

“We always do our best to protect the citizens of Coeymans,” said Officer Braden. “We have always

Assistant Chief Tom Rosario was the first fire official to arrive on the scene and stated that the resident was sitting on the second floor porch with his dog when he noticed the home filling with smoke and became trapped on the porch due to increasing fire conditions inside.

Assistant Chief Rosario said that the police officers obtained a ladder from the yard of a neighbor and began bringing the homeowner to safety while he walked around the building to assess the fire conditions.

An engine from Coeymans Fire arrived and pulled a line to the rear of the residence where crews quickly began battling the blaze.

“Because of the crews' quick re-

sponse and the work of my guys, fire damage was limited to the second floor, with water damage on the first floor,” Rosario said.

Fire departments on the scene included Coeymans, Ravena and New Baltimore. The Coeymans Hollow and Selkirk Fire Departments were on standby.

The cause of the fire is believed to have been electrical, however, the final report has not yet been released.

Assistant Chief Rosario credits the work of the police officers for getting the homeowner to safety within minutes of the call being dispatched.

“They deserve a lot of credit and should be given it,” Rosario said.

“Because of their quick thinking and actions that followed, the man was safe.”

93-Year-Old Woman Dies in Niagara Falls House Fire Niagara Falls, NY - An elderly woman died after a fire broke out at 1159 Ashland Ave. on Friday night, November 15th, according to the Niagara Falls JUMP TO FILE# Fire Department. 111919101 Fire Chief Joe Pedulla confirmed the victim as 93year-old Bernice Coonan.

First responders were called to the scene at 9:00 P.M. Upon arrival, firefighters witnessed heavy smoke and fire coming from the first floor and front porch of the two-story, single-family home.

During a search, firefighters found the elderly woman a few feet away from the front door, pulled her outside and performed CPR. A short time later, the woman was declared dead. Niagara Falls Fire believes she lived in the home alone.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Two-Alarm Fire Destroys Castleton Home Under Construction Castleton, NY - On October 29th at 8:51 P.M., the Rensselaer County 911 dispatch center took multiple calls for a reported explosion and fully involved house at 19 Green Avenue in the village of Castleton.

With the fire department only 100-feet away from JUMP TO FILE# the scene, firefight- 110819101 ers arrived quickly and hooked up to a hydrant at the end of the driveway.

Battalion-4 arrived on scene and reported that he had a fully involved structure fire.

Castleton FD Car-2 arrived on scene, called the Signal 30 and requested the second-alarm, bringing in Schodack Valley, South Schodack, East Schodack, Schodack Landing, East Greenbush, Clinton Heights, City of Rensselaer, Castleton EMS and Nassau EMS. Firefighters' efforts were hampered when the intense heat from the fire took down power lines that were attached to the house. Crews quickly pulled multiple hand lines as several small explosions occurred and started to knock down the heavy fire. Command advised arriving firefighters that this was an exterior operation only, as the first and second floors were compromised and had collapsed.

National Grid arrived on scene and turned off the natural gas to the house, as well as the charged power line that fell from the intense heat. Firefighters used four hand lines and one master stream to knock down the heavy fire.

Code Enforcement, along with the Schodack Police Department and Town of Schodack Fire Investigators arrived on scene and began investigating the incident.

Code Enforcement personnel deemed that it was unsafe for anyone to make entry into the compromised structure and ordered that the building be torn down immediately. Firefighters kept a hand line in operation while the building was being torn down.

One firefighter was injured and treated on scene. The fire was brought under control after about 75 minutes, and the cause is under investigation at this time.

The Temptation to Look Into the Mirror...

Chaplain's Corner Didymus McHugh

So many times we're moving forward when we drive down the road and we occasionally look in the rear-view mirror, or in the side mirror, to see what's coming up from behind. We want to make sure that we watch out for the tractor-trailer or the flashing lights in the mirror. But we should not constantly look in the mirror; we should just check occasionally for only a few seconds.

If we constantly look in the mirror as we're driving, we do not see what's ahead of us.

We may miss that the road makes a turn while we are too distracted looking at something that caught our interest and we're hung up on it. We may keep looking at the exit that we were supposed to take, but we blew it. We were distracted and going too fast and now we are a mile past where we needed to change direction.

As we go through life we are to look ahead of us, at the work that we have set our hands to. We cannot constantly live in the past.

The enemy wants us to live in the

past, so that we cannot complete the mission that God has for us. If we live our life in the past, we will crash because of the “I should haves”, or the “I could haves”. But you did not. You made a decision.

You acted a certain way. Can we take it back or hit the reset button for our life? No, we must continue on.

We must learn from our experiences. All the past decisions and experiences, no matter if they were right or wrong, make you who you are. We have learned lessons. Yes, sometimes those lessons were painful to you or others, but hopefully you learned from them. If we never made any mistakes, could we learn?

Even if we make no mistakes, there are times that we are in great pain. We may experience a close person’s death, or suicide. We may have seen tragedy and it shook our world, but that does not define us.

We may have flashbacks of past incidents or may have nightmares, but we should not live there.

Philippians 3:12,13 States that I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.

13 Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead. I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

If we let our past rule our present, we may have no future. You may look so hard in the rear-view mirror and not look up that you miss the next exit, so you did not take the off-ramp.

As we go through life, we are to look up and see what is ahead of us, as the work that God has set for us.

Use the past as a reference of lessons learned. As a point of reference, the past is alright. But as a wise teacher taught me, you cannot have a foot in two canoes. As your foot is in the two canoes, the boats separate and you fall into the water.

If you get stuck in the past and cannot get out for one reason or another, you may need someone to be your guide in the journey of getting rid of the dreams, or flashbacks, or triggers.

Please remember to do what you need to do to press on in the things that God has for you. You were created on purpose for a purpose. We do not want to cheat other people by not being able to assist them.

Family, friends, first responders and complete strangers lined the streets of Ravena and South Bethlehem in October to pay their final respects to World War II Medal of Honor recipient, Sgt. Francis Currey.

Currey was one of only a few Medal of Honor recipients from World War II still alive. He died peacefully at his home in Selkirk on October 8th and was laid to rest on Saturday, October 12th in South Bethlehem, with a full military send-off complete with a flyover from two Blackhawk helicopters.

The funeral procession made its way from Ravena down Route 9W and went underneath an American Flag hung by two firetrucks. The road was lined with members of Ravena, Coeymans, Coeymans Hollow and New Baltimore Fire Departments.

The procession went all the way up Route 11 to South Bethlehem, where members of the Selkirk FD were lined up with the American Flag hung over Rte. 101 and Rte. 396.

Newburgh, NY - The Cronomer Valley, Winona Lake and Orange Lake Fire Departments were called out to a chimney fire at 113 Locust Drive on November 3rd. On arrival, firefighters found burning embers inside the chimney. There were no injuries.

This book that was reviewed is a soft cover, measuring 5 ½ inches by 9 inches, and it contains 370 pages. It is a tragic, true story about a deluge of rain that fell on May 31st, 1889 that dropped almost a foot of water in under 24

hours. This took place in Central Pennsylvania and the result of it became the deadliest in our history.

The flood it caused quickly destroyed Johnstown, a town with a population of 20,000. It raised the Little Conemaugh River and threatened the South Fork Dam. The dam was built to make a private lake for a hunting and fishing club. Many of the rich industrialists belonged to this club. Names such as Andrew Carnegie are mentioned, as well as others. The dam was controversial, as some thought it was not constructed well enough.

The pages in the 14 chapters and epilogue detail the horror of this event, including death and miraculous endings intertwined.

The stories of many families affected are written and will keep the reader in suspense.

Two-Alarm Fire Leaves Troy Family Homeless Troy, NY - On November 19th at 1:50 A.M., the City of Troy Fire Department was dispatched for a reported structure fire at 1 Van Every Avenue. The dispatcher was taking multiple calls re- JUMP TO FILE# porting heavy fire 112119101 coming from the building.

Engine-6 arrived on scene and called the Signal 30 for heavy fire in the basement and first floor of the building. As Engine 6’s crew pulled a hand line, the battalion chief transmitted a second-alarm to bring the City of Watervliet and Watervliet Arsenal to the scene.

The residents of the building had made it out safely and were placed in the back of Medic-4 to stay warm.

Engine 6's crew made entry into the basement and started to knock down some of the heavy fire, but due to the advanced fire spread, they were ordered to back out of the building.

Truck-2, Engine-3 and the Rescue Squad arrived on scene and firefighters began to pull multiple hand lines from Truck-2.

After connecting to the hydrant on the top of the hill, firefighters pulled the hand lines into the building and started to knock down the fire on the first floor and basement. Heavy black smoke started to push from the roof of the building as the fire began making its way to the cockloft area.

Command ordered all firefighters to pull out of the building as conditions began rapidly changing, with heavy smoke now starting to push from the second floor and heavy fire pushing from the roof. The second floor became

heavily involved as soon as firefighters made their way down the stairs and out of the building.

Crews took up a defensive position on the outside of the structure and used multiple hand lines and master streams to knock down the visible fire from the second floor. Command had Truck-2 set up and go into master stream operations from the bucket, at which time a partial structural collapse occurred.

Troy crews remained on scene for over five hours until the fire

was out. No firefighters were injured, and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation by City of Troy Fire Investigators.

The displaced family, who lost everything in the fire including their children’s special medical equipment, was taken to Albany Medical Center. The house was scheduled for demolition, as it was deemed too unstable to remain standing.

New Windsor Man Injured After Car Falls on Him New Windsor, NY - The New Windsor FD was dispatched for a helicopter stand by on November 5th at Saint Joseph's School following an incident involving a vehicle that landed on a person at 1 JUMP TO FILE# Coutant Lane.

110619105 When New Windsor police officers arrived on scene just after 5:00 P.M., they found a conscious, but injured male pinned underneath a vehicle. The officers quickly lifted the vehicle and pulled the trapped male out from underneath, who was then transported by New Windsor EMS to a helicopter landing zone where he was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center.

Later reports stated that the victim was in stable condition, but suffered four broken ribs and several broken facial bones. The victim had been working underneath the vehicle when the floor jack slipped, causing the vehicle to drop onto his chest.

Driver Transported After Crashing Into Tree in Montgomery

Montgomery, NY - The Maybrook and Coldenham Fire Departments were dispatched on October 15th for a vehicle versus tree on I-84 eastbound at mile marker 29. Firefighters assisted in removing one occupant from the vehicle who was then transported to Montefiore St. Luke's Hospital by Montgomery Ambulance. Mobile Life ALS was also at the scene.

NYS Police are investigating the incident.

Retiring Greene County Dispatcher Surprised with Special Send-Off

Greene County, NY - Greene County first responders recently honored a retiring dispatcher. Dispatcher Richard Frasco spent his final shift on the air at the Greene County Communications Center in Cairo on Friday, September 27th. He was surprised with a send-off on the air from his fellow dispatchers, as well as a parade of apparatus in front of the dispatch center from fire, EMS and police agencies from throughout Greene County.

Early-Morning Fire Displaces Newburgh Residents Newburgh, NY - Middle Hope firefighters responded to a reported structure fire at 102 Dowling Street during the early morning hours of October 18th. Firefighters arrived on scene just after 4:00 A.M. and immediately requested a secondalarm, bringing the Newburgh, Good Will, Air National Guard, Orange Lake and Cronomer Valley Fire Departments in as mutual aid. The Red Cross also responded to assist displaced residents. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

One driver transported with neck pain after being rear-ended by a driver that claims to have blown a brake line, 10/22/19.

Pickup Truck Blows Brake Line in Ravena, Causing Crash JUMP TO FILE #102819107 Ravena, NY - The Ravena FD, along with Ravena Rescue and Albany County Paramedics responded with Coeymans Police and the Albany County Sheriff's Department to a reported MVA on Tuesday, October 22nd around 7:10 P.M. The crash occurred on Route 9W at the entrance to Route 101.

According to Ravena FD Chief Jeff Dambrosio, the vehicles were traveling northbound on

Route 9W when the driver of a pickup truck crashed into the rear of a small Honda car after he blew a brake line.

The driver of the Honda was transported to Albany Medical Center with neck pain. Dambrosio stated that there were also two children in the car who were picked up at the scene by a relative.

The driver of the pickup had no injuries and there was no significant damage to the truck as a result of the crash.

Quick Save by Mastic Firefighters

Mastic, NY - On November 10th, 911 dispatchers took a call for a reported house fire on Mastic Blvd. East. SCPD, Mastic EMS and the Mastic FD responded to the call. Firecom notified arriving units that the homeowner stated that there was a fire in the driveway which was extending and burning the house. Mastic's Chief arrived on scene and found that the fire was out. Mastic's engines arrived on scene, pulled a booster line and wet down the side of the house to make sure that there was no active fire. Firefighters checked for extension inside the home and then requested the Fire Marshal to respond. There were no reported injuries.

Veteran’s Day Garbage Truck Fire for Centereach

Centereach, NY - On Veterans Day, November 11th, at approximately 12:25 P.M., the Centereach Fire Department was activated for a reported garbage truck on fire in the vicinity of Dietz Avenue and Middle Country Road. A Fire Marshal was first on scene and confirmed the location and fire. Engine 7 was first due and stretched a hose-line to the rear of the garbage truck, where the fire was then contained. No injuries were reported.

LONG ISLAND Historic 100-Year-Old Garage Burns to the Ground in Ronkonkoma Ronkonkoma, NY - The Ronkonkoma FD was activated on the early afternoon of Thursday, November 7th, for numerous calls reporting a burning car inside Newton's Garage, a 100-yearold, wood-frame building located on Portion Road and JUMP TO FILE# Ronkonkoma Av- 110819112 enue.

The first-due engine was met with a fully involved structure, with all three garage bays and the shop area engulfed in flames.

Flames had also spread to several cars in the parking lot.

Firefighters from seven departments responded to the scene with tower ladders and additional engines and fought the blaze for over two hours. The historic building was a total loss. No injuries were reported.

Centereach Responds to Four-Car MVA

Lake Grove, NY - On Sunday, October 20th at 5:51 P.M., the Centereach Fire Department was activated for a multi-vehicle accident at the intersection of Nesconset Highway (Route 347) and Moriches Road in Lake Grove. One person was transported to a local area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Mutual aid for an ambulance was provided by Nesconset FD, but later cancelled due to patients refusing medical attention. The scene was then handed over to Suffolk Police.

Tri-Hamlet Area of Brookhaven Hosts Fire Prevention Events Suffolk County, NY - Fire Departments throughout Suffolk County recently participated in National Fire Prevention Week activities in order to educate children and adults on the dangers of fire, as JUMP TO FILE# well as to also help 102619100 with recruitment.

Both the Brookhaven and Mastic Fire Departments held open houses at their stations where they

demonstrated stove fires and vehicle extrication. Brookhaven also conducted a car fire demo at their open house.

Thanks to the Suffolk County Fire Marshal’s office, children were able to try out the fire hoses, go into the smoke and all hazards trailers, and even got to meet an accelerant K-9 during some of the events.

A great learning experience was had by all in attendance!

Burning Wires Cause Power Outage in Selden

Selden, NY - Firefighters responded to a report of wires down in front of 5 Larry Road on October 20th. Selden's Chief arrived and found an electrical wire down that was arcing and humming, causing a fire on the front lawn and a power outage to the block. Firefighters established a safe perimeter and awaited the arrival of PSEG to kill the power and restring the line.

Riverhead, NY - On Saturday, October 5th, the Riverhead Fire Department held their annual Open House at their headquarters on Roanoke Ave., however this year's event was a little more special than normal.

The department received delivery of two new Seagrave engines and a new Chevy chief's SUV just a few weeks prior to the open house, so in addition to the usual

JUMP TO FILE #101319107 demonstrations of grease fires, vehicle extrication and smoke houses, the department decided to celebrate their new equipment with a public blessing and wet down.

The ceremony was held during the final hour of the open house.

After the priest blessed the trucks,

neighbors from Eastport and Wading River Fire Departments were on hand with lines stretched and ready to give a nice bath to the new apparatus.

Flanders FD was also instrumental in standing by for Riverhead while they held this wonderful event.

Gas Leak in Farmingville Causes Road Closures and Evacuations

Farmingville, NY - Crews from multiple area fire departments responded on October 21st to assist Farmingville firefighters with closing off the area of Portion Road after National Grid struck a large gas main, sending a plume of gas into the air.

Nearby commercial buildings and residential areas were evacuated during the incident.

FDNY Blaze Rips Through Staten Island Coast Guard Base, Displacing Eight Military Families Staten Island, NY - A fastmoving fire that tore through the Fort Wadsworth U.S. Coast Guard base in Staten Island displaced eight military families on Monday, November JUMP TO FILE# 4th.

Firefighters ar- 110519103 rived at 442 USS Iowa Circle just after 1:00 P.M., and found fire through the roof of a threestory, multi-dwelling structure. Division 8 transmitted a second-alarm at 1:13 P.M. for heavy fire on the second and third floors. At 1:33 P.M., Division 8 reported that there was extension to Exposure 4, and that five lines were stretched and in operation.

The fire was declared under control at 2:11 P.M. The Red Cross responded to assist the displaced families.

Two-Alarm Fire Damages Staten Island Home Staten Island, NY - Firefighters were dispatched on the morning of Thursday, November 14th to 415 Livermore Ave., a three-story, 30'x50' private dwelling, for a fire reported to be on the second floor. A 10-75 was transmitted at 8:41 A.M. by the first due unit. Division 8 transmitted a second-alarm at 8:58 A.M., and the fire was brought under control at 9:54 A.M. EMS advised that there were eight FDNY members with non-life-threatening injuries. Pictured is the aftermath of the fire at 415 Livermore Avenue.
