THREE ALARMS STRUCK AT HOUSE FIRE IN ROCHESTER

Rochester, NY - A three-alarm house fire broke out in a home on the corner of Monroe Avenue and Rosedale Street on Tuesday, June 9th, around 10:20 A.M. More than 80 firefighters were on scene to battle the fire that started in the roof and grew to damage about nine units in the building.

Fatal Structure Fire in Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls, NY - Niagara Falls fire investigators are looking into what sparked a large fire in the city overnight on July 6th that claimed the life a resident. Crews were called out around midnight to the building on Niagara Street near the intersection of 19th Street. We are told that the fire started in a single building and quickly spread to two other neighboring buildings. Two of the buildings were homes, the other was a mixed-used residential and business space. All three buildings were set to be demolished Tuesday morning, July 7th.

Wrecking crews stopped demolishing one of the homes after a body was discovered. A man who lived on the second floor has been unaccounted for since the fire started. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Home Struck by Lightning in Newburgh Newburgh, NY - Winona Lake FD was dispatched to a residence struck by lightning with smoke inside the home at 6 Shady Lane on July 8th. Winona Lake requested mutual aid to the scene, bringing in Orange Lake, City of Newburgh, Good Will and Cronomer Valley. Middlehope FD was on stand by during the incident. After the fire was knocked down crews then checked for extensions before clearing the scene. Orange County Deputy Fire Coordinator 36-13, Town of Newburgh Police and EMS were also at the scene.

Fire Destroys Red Hook Home; No Injuries from Two-Alarm Blaze Red Hook, NY - A residence in the Town of Red Hook is considered a total loss following a two-alarm fire on Monday morning, June 15th. The two residents of the home at 100 Kelly Road were already out of the house when they called 911 at 9:01 A.M., reporting a fire in their basement.

Firefighters arrived moments later and found heavy flames coming from the basement and spreading quickly throughout the house.

It took firefighters approximately 45 minutes to get the blaze under control, and hot spots were flaring up for about two more hours after that.

“When the first officers arrived at the scene, it was determined that the main floor was compromised,” said Red Hook Fire Company First Assistant

JUMP TO FILE #061620101 Chief Mike Lane. “Due to that dangerous situation, we established a defensive exterior attack, including a ladder truck fighting the fire from above. No firefighters entered the house.”

That decision proved to be the right call when the first floor collapsed less than 10 minutes after arrival, and most of the roof caved in shortly after that.

There were no injuries. The home, however, is not habitable and Red Cross was at the scene to assist the family. The family also lost a car that was parked in the attached garage.

About 50 volunteer firefighters from the Red Hook Fire Company and Tivoli, Rhinebeck and

Hillside Fire Departments fought the blaze. NDP EMS, the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, and Red Hook Police Department were also at the scene, and the Milan Fire Department was put on stand-by to assist if needed.

Firefighters were on the scene until after 3:00 P.M. As of the afternoon on the same day, the Dutchess County Fire Investigation Division was still determining the cause, but it is not considered suspicious.

While fighting this fire, the Red Hook Fire Company received another call for a lawnmower fire on the other side of the town. They were able to release one engine from Kelly Road to extinguish the second fire.

Chief Lee Shurtleff of the Groton FD Takes Office as President of the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs East Schodack, NY - Chief Lee Shurtleff of the Groton Fire Department in Tompkins County was installed as president of the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs (NYSAFC) on June 13, 2020. He will serve a one-year term leading the statewide not-forprofit organization, which represents more than 10,000 career and volunteer fire chiefs, officers, and emergency services personnel.

Due to the cancellation of the 114th Annual Conference & FIRE 2020 Expo, the installation took place via video conference with Past President John Sroka swearing in the 2020-2021 slate of officers, including 1st Vice President Robert Kloepfer Jr. (Floral Park Fire Department); 2nd Vice President James Comstock (Henrietta Fire District); Directors (Volunteer) Scott Ewing (Plattsburgh District #3 Fire Department), William Owen III (Stittville Fire Department), and Michael Volpe (Busti Fire Department); Director (Career) Stefano Napolitano (Batavia Fire Department); and Director (EMS) George June (Catskill Ambulance Service).

Rochester, NY - At approximately 2:20 P.M. on Sunday, July 5th, Rochester firefighters were dispatched to 9 Waverly Place for a reported house fire. First arriving units reported a working fire on the second floor of an occupied multiple dwelling. The fire was quickly extinguished and confined to the apartment of origin. The occupants of the building were alerted by smoke detectors and able to safely evacuate.

There were no injuries reported. The Rochester Fire Department’s Fire Investigation Unit was working to determine the cause.

Shurtleff is also a graduate of Simmons Institute of Funeral Service in Syracuse. A licensed funeral director, he is actively involved with his family’s funeral and properties businesses. He has served as an officer or director for many civic, political, educational, and health related non-profit boards.

A life member of NYSAFC who joined the association in 1987, Shurtleff served for many years as a regional representative and with the EMS Committee. He was chairman of the Government Affairs Committee for two years and had been vice chair for both the State and Federal Sub-Committees before joining the board of directors in 2013.

Car Versus TractorTrailer in New Windsor New Windsor, NY - New Windsor Police and Town of New Windsor EMS were called to a tractor-trailer versus car MVA on July 7th at the intersection of Route 300 and Old Temple Hill Road. One subject was taken out of the car and transported to Montefiore/St. Luke's Hospital by New Windsor EMS. New Windsor Police directed traffic during the incident.

New Windsor Police are investigating the cause.

Arson Ruled Cause of Jamestown Structure Fire Jamestown, NY - At about 2:04 A.M. on June 17th, Jamestown Fire was dispatched to 31 Thayer Street for a reported structure fire. Car 1 went on scene and reported a fully involved structure fire with two exposures going. Car 1 requested an off-shift of 15+1, followed by all available manpower. The cause of the fire has been ruled arson.

Albany Firefighters Make Fast Work of Well Involved House Fire on Myrtle Ave. Albany, NY - On June 18th at 5:55 P.M., the City of Albany Fire Department was dispatched for a reported structure fire at 752 Myrtle Avenue, with the caller stating that the house was on fire. JUMP TO FILE# Rescue 9 notified 071020110 the dispatcher that they had a heavy column of smoke showing from several blocks away and transmitted the Signal 30 for a working structure fire.

Rescue 9 arrived on scene and had heavy fire pushing from the second floor of the building and heavy fire through the roof. Engine 11 arrived on scene and firefighters immediately pulled the hand line from the engine, making their way up the stairs where they encountered heavy fire and smoke pushing down the staircase. The pump operator immediately charged the line and firefighters started to make an aggressive push into the second floor apartment. Engine 10's firefighters pulled a supply line and began to feed the first arriving engine on scene. Engine 11 quickly opened up its deck gun and started putting a large amount of water into the front porch area, knocking down a portion of the heavy fire within seconds.

As firefighters were making progress on the second floor, firefighters from the truck company made entry to the second floor and started to pull down ceilings to expose hotspots. Firefighters conducted a primary and secondary search of the house and found that no one was inside.

about two hours conducting heavy overhaul of the badly damaged home. Fire Investigators arrived on scene and began their investigation

into what caused the fire. No firefighters were injured on scene.

Winona Lake Dispatched to Two-Car MVA Newburgh, NY - Winona Lake Engine Company responded to a two-car accident on July 4th on Route 300 in front of Walmart. No injuries were reported.

Apartment Complex Fire Quickly Extinguished in Ravena Ravena, NY - Fire crews responded to the Oakbrook Manor Apartment Complex in Ravena Thursday afternoon, June 11th, for a reported structure fire.

The call was dispatched at 3:15 JUMP TO FILE# P.M. for reports of 062020105 smoke and fire coming from Building 26, Apartment G, at the Oakbrook Manor Apartment Complex.

Original dispatch information stated that the caller was evacuating all residents in the building.

She stated that she needed to go back inside to get her cat and then the call was disconnected.

Upon the arrival of Assistant Chief Kevin Phillips of the Ravena Fire Department, maintenance from the apartment complex was already on the scene.

Phillips says there was fire in the ceiling of the balcony of the apartment, and that the maintenance worker used a fire extinguisher and was able to knock down the majority of the fire.

Crews discovered some additional fire that had spread to the attic of the building. It took approximately 40 minutes to completely extinguish the fire, according to Phillips. He said there was still some residual smoke, causing crews to cut a hole in the roof for ventilation and check for additional fire.

Phillips says crews faced difficulty with water supply at the apartment complex. "A couple of the hydrants were actually sealed tight," Phillips said. "It took awhile to get one for us to finally establish an adequate water supply."

Phillips said there was only some minor extension, but most of the damage was confined to the one apartment. He says management from the apartment complex

is working to relocate tenants to different apartments on the property.

There was a cat that firefighters brought out of an apartment, but Phillips is unsure which apartment that cat came from. He says to his knowledge he believes all pets are accounted for at this time.

According to Phillips there were no known injuries to civilians on the scene, however, one firefighter was transported to the hospital with a possible heat-related illness.

The Ravena, Coeymans and New Baltimore Fire Departments

responded to the scene with Coeymans Hollow, Westerlo and Selkirk Fire Departments on standby.

Also on the scene was the Medway-Grapeville FD with their rehab trailer, as well as Coeymans Police, Albany County Sheriff's Department, Albany County Paramedics and two ambulances from the Ravena Rescue Squad.

Phillips says the cause of the fire is under investigation by the Coeymans Police Department, but the cause is believed to be electrical at this time.

Fireworks Cause Two-Alarm Fire in Troy Troy, NY - On June 21st at 12:07 A.M., the City of Troy Fire Department was dispatched to 150 6th Avenue at the old Haskell School for multiple calls reporting a structure fire. The caller re- JUMP TO FILE# ported that individ- 071020109 uals in the side parking lot were lighting off fireworks when the building got hit and caught fire.

Engines 4, 1, 2 and 6, along with Trucks 2 and 1, the rescue squad, Medic 4, and the Battalion Chief went en route to the scene.

The police department arrived on scene and had fire coming from the 'Delta' side of the building and fire shooting out of the roof of the structure.

After receiving the reports from the police department, the battalion chief immediately requested the second-alarm and transmitted the Signal 30 on his arrival. The second-alarm brought mutual aid from the City of Watervliet, Watervliet Arsenals, and Green Island into the city of Troy.

With the structure being a "do not enter" building and all of the floors being unstable, command stated that no firefighters would make entry, and this would be a defensive operation only. Firefighters pulled (two) two-and-ahalf inch hand lines to the side of the structure and to the alleyway and immediately began to knock down the fire condition on the third floor and in the roof. Truck 2 set up in the front of the building while Truck 1 set up in the rear of the building, and both truck companies began to knock down the fire in the roof. As firefighters were walking around the structure they found dozens of spent fireworks on the ground.

It took about one hour for crews to knock down all of the fire and hotspots on the top floors and roof. Police officers in Zone 3 handled dozens of firework calls in the area that evening before the fire. Fire investigators arrived on scene and began their investigation into the incident.

The Haskell School is a historic building that was built in 1894. It still has its majestic front entrance, which is a gated arch rising over two stories. The school remained open until 1975 and was turned into an apartment building in 1977 until it became condemned in the early 2000's. The building was previously badly damaged and now has fire damage to the second and third floors and roof area. The fire department secured the building before clearing the scene.

Lightning Causes Damage to Endicott Home Endicott, NY - The Endicott Fire Department was dispatched to Skye Island Dr. for a reported house fire on June 18th, with reports that the house was struck by lightning.

Chief 25, 25A, Quint 25 and E25-1 responded. While en route, Chief Griswold could see heavy smoke in the distance in the vicinity of the incident address and requested a second-alarm, summoning EFD off duty personnel and neighboring fire departments.

Chief 25 arrived within minutes along with Quint 25 who layed in from the hydrant. Crews found heavy fire in the back of the house at the roof line. Crews, under the leadership of Captain Huften, entered the structure to find the seat of the fire inside.

Crews found fire in the attic space above the second floor bedroom, made access and extinguished the fire while exterior crews knocked out the flames on the outside of the building.

EFD's quick response and rapid interior attack kept the fire from extending beyond the two rooms adjacent to the exterior wall where the lightning struck. Those two rooms did also receive smoke and water damage.

West Corners, Vestal, Endwell and Union Center assisted at the scene with interior crews, a FAST team and an air trailer. West Endicott and Vestal stood by to cover the Village Of Endicott while East Maine, Glen Aubrey, Maine, Vestal and Union Center responded with tankers to supplement our water supply due to low hydrant pressure so close to the top of the hill.

Also on scene were Broome County Office of Emergency Services, Union Vol. Emergency Squad, NYSEG and Broome County Bureau of Fire Investigation who confirmed lightning as the cause. As always our brothers and sisters in blue, Endicott Police Department, were there to assist with whatever was needed.

This was another great example of how a quick response and multiple departments working together efficiently can get a job done easily and with the least amount of damage necessary.

Bethlehem, NY - An honor garden was unveiled and dedicated to local first responders in the Town of Bethlehem on Saturday, June 13th.

The garden is dedicated to honor the first responders in the Town of Bethlehem, including Delmar, Elsmere, Slingerlands, Selkirk and North Bethlehem Fire Departments, Delmar-Bethlehem EMS, Bethlehem Police, and Albany Medical Center-EmUrgentCare.

at 40 Center Lane near Magee Park off of Kenwood Avenue.

The local fire departments share this training facility almost every day of the week during the warmer months to train their members for various situations that they may face at an actual emergency scene.

Event organizers say the garden is a spot for community members to visit and reflect.

Vacuum Units Deserve A Serious Look MIKE CAREY

Firefighters battled a structure fire in Waterford that destroyed a home, June 12th.

Fire Destroys Waterford Home

Waterford, NY - A fire that occurred Friday, June 12th, destroyed a two-story home in Waterford.

The fire ripped through 20 Fairview Avenue and was fully involved when the first crews arrived. There were initial reports of possible entrapment, but all residents escaped safely and no injuries were reported.

Crews used a water curtain to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring homes, although one did suffer some melted siding.

Northside Fire District Chief Shawn Gilbert says power lines created some issues.

“The lines had come down but were still energized,” said Gilbert.

JUMP TO FILE #070220102 “It took about 45 minutes to get power shut off, so that hampered efforts.” Gilbert says there were also some initial water issues.

Crews from Northside were joined by Waterford-Halfmoon, Boght, Maplewood, and Colonie Village. Several other departments were placed on stand by. The cause remains under investigation, but Gilbert says it appears to have started on the front porch. Five adults were displaced as a result of the fire.

The universal challenge to Fire Departments today remains - adequate personnel and water for fire extinguishment. This is especially true in non-hydrant areas.

Departments are fast discovering the savings in personnel, equipment and time with Firovac™ vacuum fire apparatus. Dumpster Fire at Mid Valley Mall in Newburgh

Newburgh, NY - Good Will FD was dispatched to a dumpster fire behind Dollar Tree at the Mid Valley Mall on July 6th. Firefighters stretched one hand line and extinguished the fire and then went through debris to make sure that the fire was out.

Town of Newburgh Police were also at the scene.

Garbage Can Fires Damage Central Little League Building in Troy Troy, NY - On June 27th at 10:30 P.M., the City of Troy Police Department notified the dispatcher that they had two trash cans on fire on the side of the central little league at 3130 Seventh Avenue. The officers on scene requested the fire department to step it up, as the building was starting to catch fire.

The dispatcher transmitted the alarm of fire and notified units that the police were on scene and had an active fire condition. En-

Engine 4 arrived on scene and called for the Signal 30 as he had a working fire that started to extend to the inside of the building.

Engine 4 stretched a single hand line to the side of the building and

quickly knocked down all of the fire. Firefighters made entry into the building and had a minor smoke condition, minor fire damage where the fire came into the window, and water damage.

Firefighters conducted overhaul on scene for about 15 minutes. No one was injured and the fire is currently under investigation.

Crews Make Quick Work of Awning Fire in Brighton Brighton, NY - On Friday, June 26th, Brighton and Pittsford Fire Departments responded for a reported building at Adrian Jules Custom Clothier, 2930 Monroe Avenue, in Brighton. Units arrived on scene with fire extending up the front of the building. Quick action by crews brought the fire under control and prevented any further spread. There were no injuries reported.

Multiple Pets Rescued from Fully Involved Apartment Building Fire in Ravena Ravena, NY - Emergency crews were dispatched to 22 Oakbrook Manor, Apartment B, in Ravena, for a reported structure fire at 2:30 A.M. on Monday, June 22nd.

Upon arrival of crews, the entire building was heavily involved in fire and a Signal 30 was declared, indicating a working structure fire.

Dispatch information stated that there were multiple callers reporting hearing screaming from inside the building and residents trying to get their pets out of the burning structure. Deputy Chief Kevin Phillips of the Ravena Fire Department arrived on the scene and stated he noticed heavy fire coming from an apartment and spreading across the roof line.

Upon his arrival there were members of the Coeymans Police Department and Albany County Sheriff's Department knocking on doors and evacuating residents from the buildings. He says the resident in the apartment where the fire is believed to have originated also helped evacuate residents. The two neighboring buildings were also evacuated as a precaution, but residents in those two buildings have since been allowed back inside.

Phillips says it took approximately one hour to get the fire under control. Firefighters faced issues with water supply when fighting the fire. "We know from previous experience that the water hydrant on Route 9W, across from the entrance to Oakbrook Manor, is the best hydrant," Phillips said.

Due to firefighters connecting to the hydrant across Route 9W, the road was closed from Route 143 to Aquetuck Road. Fire hydrants within the Oakbrook Manor Apartment Complex have given firefighters troubles in the past as well.

Firefighters were at Oakbrook Manor just over one week prior on June 11th for a structure fire in building 26. Arriving crews had found fire coming from the ceiling in a balcony from one of the apartments and were able to contain the fire to the apartment. While fighting that fire, crews had difficulty opening the hydrants within the complex.

Both fires seem to have started in the ceiling of an apartment and spread to the roof line and are believed to be caused by

While fighting this fire there were multiple hot spots that would flare up and crews had to keep attempting to get to the flames in the void spaces in the attic.

Ladder 26-70 from Ravena and Ladder 29-70 from Selkirk were placed on opposite sides of the building to provide light and water, and also give crews an overhead view of the structure.

Multiple pets were rescued from the structure, even after the roof collapsed. There were three cats, a hamster and a bearded dragon that were rescued from the building. At one point firefighters noticed a cat that was walking across the roof.

"After doing some overhaul we noticed on the northern side of the structure that there was a cat at the peak of the roof," said Deputy Chief Phillips. "Firefighters from Coeymans went up there with an extension ladder and the cat ended up going to them and they were able to bring it down."

Fire departments on the scene included Ravena, Coeymans, Coeymans Hollow, New Baltimore, Selkirk, Coxsackie, Bethlehem FAST Team, and MedwayGrapeville with their rehab trailer.

Fire departments on standby included Selkirk, Onesquethaw, Slingerlands, Earlton and Coxsackie.

Also on the scene was Ravena Rescue, Albany County Paramedics, Albany County Sheriff's Department and Coeymans Police.

According to Phillips, all occupants were accounted for. He says there were approximately 10 residents displaced by the fire and that Oakbrook Manor has since provided alternate shelter for those displaced.

Some firefighters were treated at the scene for exhaustion from the heat, however, there were no other injuries reported on the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but is believed to be electrical.

One Person Killed in Fatal MVA on I-84 in Newburgh Newburgh, NY - Winona Lake was dispatched to a three-vehicle accident on I-84 eastbound in the area of Exit 36-A just after 4:30 P.M. on June 23rd. One subject was reportedly trapped inside a vehicle. New York State Police and Town of Newburgh EMS were on scene and reported that one subject was killed. Eastbound traffic was backed up for miles as troopers were investigating the scene. According to state police, it was determined that 60-year-old Kenneth Kear from Wappingers Falls was killed when his Mercedes Sprinter van collided into a U-Haul truck.

Truck Pulls Down Wires, Causing Fire in Endwell Endwell, NY - On Tuesday afternoon, June 16th, EFD was called to assist Endwell Fire Department on the scene of a truck accident with wires down. The scene was under the command of Endwell Fire Chief Palazzo.

Endicott crews were directed to an alley behind the businesses where they found the driver still in the truck, unable to escape due to the live power lines, and multiple fires around the truck. NYSEG crews arrived to de-energize the

Once the lines were safe, the fires were extinguished using water and dry-chem extinguishers. The driver was evaluated by Union Volunteer Emergency Squad and not transported. Surrounding businesses were evacuated as a precaution.

Working House Fire in Brighton Brighton, NY - Shortly before 9:00 P.M. on June 10th, Brighton firefighters responded to a reported house fire at 69 Rockhill Road. Units arrived on location and reported a working fire in a two-and-a-half story house. Mutual aid was requested from Pittsford, Fairport and East Rochester. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Monroe County Fire Bureau.

ATV Accident with a Serious Injury in Washingtonville Fire District Washingtonville, NY - At 1242 hours on June 24th, the Washingtonville Fire Department received a report of an ATV accident with an unconscious victim, on the old railroad bed JUMP TO FILE# in the vicinity of the 062520102 Wa s h i n g t o n v i l l e DPW facility. Upon arrival fire department personnel assisted EMS with packaging and removing the victim from the woods. In addition, Washingtonville Firefighters established a landing zone at the Vern Allen Park. The victim was treated by Blooming Grove VAC and transported by helicopter, in serious condition, to Westchester County Medical Center. Washingtonville Fire Department Fire Police assisted with traffic control.

The accident is under investigation by the Washingtonville Police Department.

Rush, NY - On June 12th at 12:55 P.M., with a 15 to 20 MPH wind fanning the flames, crews were dispatched to a working garage fire extending into the home at 6666 RushLima Road.

JUMP TO FILE# Rush FD was 061520104 dispatched with automatic mutual aid from Honeoye Falls, Henrietta, East Avon, Mendon, Scottsville, Lima and Pittsford.

HFFD Chief Hood was on location at 12:58 P.M. reporting a working fire. Rush Pumper 584 was on location at 1:03 P.M. to secure a water supply and attacked the fire.

Chief Jon Faugh arrived and assumed command while HFFD's Chief assumed operations. Rush Pumper 582 was on location at 1:05 P.M. and hit the fire with 200-GPM from the deck gun.

Ladder 560 set up and was supplied with water from 584. Henrietta 652 laid a five-inch line from the north to supply 582's deck gun and two hand lines. An aggressive interior attack was then conducted.

The fire, which was placed under control at 1:30 P.M., was cut off in the middle of the home but not before a lot of damage was done. Two cats were rescued, one

by Chief Faugh and the other got out on its own. The resident was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. He reported a problem with a lawn mower that he had just put in the garage.

was also a total loss. Monroe Co. Fire Bureau and 5th Batt. Fire Coordinator were on scene along with investigators and the Rush Fire Marshal. Red Cross assisted the family.

Three Alarms Struck at House Fire on Monroe Ave. in Rochester Rochester, NY - A threealarm house fire broke out in a home on the corner of Monroe Avenue and Rosedale Street on Tuesday, June 9th, around 10:20 A.M. More than 80 JUMP TO FILE# firefighters were on 061120102 scene to battle the fire that started in the roof and grew to damage about nine units in the building.

Firefighters on scene said because of the intensity of the fire and the conditions outside, they had to pause for a moment and regroup before tackling the fire.

According to RFD, 21 people lived in the building and all people and pets were accounted for.

The fire was under control within two hours.

Vacant Dwelling Fire in City of Newburgh Goes to Three Alarms

Newburgh, NY - The City of Newburgh FD responded to a reported structure fire at 197 First Street on the morning of June 17th. Newburgh FD Car 4 arrived just after 7:30 A.M. with smoke and fire showing from a vacant dwelling and requested a second-alarm. Mutual Aid that responded to the scene included West Point-Ladder, Air National Guard-FAST Team, Good Will FD-Engine, and Vails Gate-Ladder. Flames were seen on the second floor and then the roof.

Firefighters used hand lines to put out the fire. Newburgh's Ladder was in front while Vails Gate's Ladder operated on South Miller Street. City of Newburgh Police and Mobile Life ALS were also at the scene. The fire is currently under investigation.

Water Rescue Conducted in the Bellport Bay Brookhaven, NY - On May 24th, the Brookhaven FD, Bellport FD and South Country Ambulance were activated for a reported water rescue in the Bellport Bay. There were reports of a small boat that was in distress with four souls on board.

Bellport Boat 5-1-26, Brookhaven's boat and multiple engines were called out. Bellport’s boat was on scene first and able to successfully secure the four occupants of the small craft as well as the boat itself. They were met by SCPD Marine Mike whose crew took the four souls as well as their boat and brought them back to the Smith Point Marina which was near where they launched from initially.

Vehicle Goes Off-Roading in Shirley Shirley, NY- At about 8:55 P.M. on May 31st, Brookhaven FD, 7th Precinct and Shirley Ambulance responded for a report of a vehicle crash on Smith Road, between Musket Drive and Probst Street.

It was originally reported that the vehicle was in the woods on fire, with two occupants. On arrival Police found the driver in the vehicle and removed him. It was believed that a second person was in the car as well. Firefighters cut trees to access the vehicle, and with police, did an extensive search but were unable to locate a second occupant.

JUMP TO FILE #060320114 copter was needed, but the helicopter was cancelled and the driver was placed into an awaiting ambulance and taken to Long Island Community Hospital.

The road was closed for an extended period as a K-9 was called in to locate the alleged second person that was in the car. An investigation later confirmed that she was not in the vehicle at the time of the incident according to sources who were at the scene.

Selden, NY - At 10:43 P.M. on Tuesday night, June 16th, a pickup truck was traveling northbound on Cty. Rd. 83 when the driver lost control and crashed into a ditch between northbound and southbound traffic. The truck launched out of the ditch, flipping onto the southbound roadway and coming to rest on a guardrail. Selden firefighters made quick work of a door pop, freeing the driver, and transported him to a local hospital. Firefighters took the the task of removing debris from the back of the pickup, including a fish.

in Jackson’s Hero Parade in Kings Park Kings Park, NY - On Sunday, May 31st, the Nassau Sheriff's Department was joined by several other organizations to hold a hero parade for young Jackson.

The parade started at Kings Park High School and went past the family's home. Some of the organizations that participated and represented law enforcement were Nassau Sheriff's Department, Suffolk County Sheriff's Department, Suffolk Police Department and the

The first responders were joined by other community members, friends and family, as well as some special friends including Spiderman, Homer Simpson, a pirate

and Marshall of Paw Patrol, courtesy of the Long Island Hero Squad (LIHS). Each child was also able to get ices courtesy of Kona Ice and their partnership with LIHS. The West Hempstead Fire Department also came back around and allowed some kids the chance to try out one of their hoses. A great time was had by Jackson on his big day.

Overturn with Reported Heavy Rescue in Shirley Shirley, NY - On Wednesday, June 10th at 8:53 A.M., Mastic Volunteer Fire Department, Mastic Volunteer Ambulance Company and Suffolk County Police Department 7th Precinct responded to a MVA with overturn and reported heavy entrapment on Clyde Road and Hounslow Road. Mastic FD Rescue Truck 10 (5-12-10) arrived on scene and quickly got to work picking up debris from the vehicles involved. Mastic Vol. Ambulance Co. transported two people with injuries to a local hospital. The condition of the patients involved was unknown. Suffolk County Police Department ESU - 1 uprighted the vehicle. Crews took up from the alarm in under an hour.

Heavy Rescue Frees Driver from Two-Car MVA in Miller Place Miller Place, NY - On July 3rd, a border call brought both Miller Place and Mount Sinai Fire Departments to the scene of a two-car MVA on Route 25A JUMP TO FILE# that trapped one 071320117 driver.

Firefighters used hydraulic tools to remove the driver, who was stabilized and transported by Port Jefferson Volunteer Ambulance Company to a local trauma center for treatment.

Dirt Biker Flown to Hospital After Crashing in Brookhaven

Brookhaven, NY - On June 2nd at about 1:00 P.M., the Brookhaven Fire Department and South Country Ambulance were activated for a report of a dirt bike crash in the woods on Southaven Drive. After assessing the injuries of the patient it was determined that they would be using a helicopter. The Brookhaven FD secured the landing zone at Frank P Long School in Bellport. The 69-year-old male was then flown to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Driver in Holtsville Sends Two Cars Into Woods Before Crashing Into Guardrail Holtsville, NY - On July 11th, a possibly intoxicated driver traveling southbound on Nicholls Road struck two cars from behind, sending them into the woods and slightly injuring one driver. After speeding off, the suspect then drove into the median, landing on top of a guardrail. SCPD and Holtsville FD responded, at which time the police conducted a field sobriety test.

ET3 Come Home…

The Federal Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has delayed its rollout of the ET3 Model (Emergency Triage, Treat, and Transport) which is designed to increase efficiency and treatment of patients, give them the care that they need, and reduce unneeded hospital visits and costs. Under this system, which was supposed to begin a five-year period this past May will now begin sometime this fall to allow participating agencies to deal with the volume of COVID-19 emergencies. More than two-dozen NYS agencies applied to be participants in this model run. All agencies need to certify 24/7 availability or present a suitable back-up plan to do so.

Local governments where ambulance agencies are participating in ET3 can apply for funding (NOFO) to establish or expand a medical triage line in their 911 dispatch. All applicants have to implement the model in a state in which at least 15,000 Medicare FFS emergency ambulance transports occurred in 2017or in a region that includes one or more counties in which at least one of those counties had 7,500 Medicare FFS emergency ambulance transports in 2017.

“Emergency Triage, Treat, and Transport (ET3) is a voluntary, five-year payment model that will provide greater flexibility to ambulance care teams to address emergency health care needs of Medicare Fee-for-Service beneficiaries following a 911 call. Under the ET3 model, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will pay participating ambulance suppliers and providers to 1) transport an individual to a hospital emergency department (ED) or other destination covered under the regulations, 2) transport to an

alternative destination (such as a primary care doctor’s office or an urgent care clinic), or 3) provide treatment in place with a qualified health care practitioner, either on the scene or connected using telehealth. The model will allow beneficiaries to access the most appropriate emergency services at the right time and place.”

The ultimate goal of the ET3 Model is to provide less expensive care, appropriate treatment and patient choice; if the patient declines any options offered and wants to be treated in an Emergency Department, they must be taken there. By reducing unnecessary transports, maximizing time spent, and keeping costs low, ET3 will help to improve care in otherwise under-served populations. The health care needs of Medicare patients would be met in appropriate situations, on site (possibly including telemedicine options), at a doctor’s office or urgent care center, or if medically necessary or requested by the patient, at the emergency department of a local hospital. CMS encourages agencies get other forms of insurance in compliance as well.

ET3 encourages the use of Community Paramedicine programs while decreasing excess burden on emergency departments. Without the ET3 model, EMS agencies would only receive payment from Medicare agencies if they transported patients to the hospital regardless of actual need; under ET3 agencies can receive payment for appropriate treatment even if it’s in the patient’s own living room. Under the ET3 system 911 call centers will be able to triage patients and dispatch the appropriate services from Community Paramedicine to emergency hospital transport. Putting patient care first, agencies participating in ET3 would be able to bring respiratory infections to urgent centers for treatments, drop chronic inebriates off at detox centers, help uninjured fall victims to identify trip hazards, and provide medication education as needed.

The ET3 system is forward thinking and a better model for care delivery.

Vehicle Goes for Swim in Moriches Pond Moriches, NY - On Friday evening, May 29th, just before 7:30 P.M., the Mastic Fire Department was activated for a report of a vehicle crash with a vehicle in the pond on Branes Road, off Montauk Highway.

Rescue 10 also arrived on scene and assisted with securing the scene on the Barnes Road side.

The vehicle was pulled from the water and secured. All FD units took up within about 30 minutes.

This is a soft cover book from Fire Apparatus Journal, measuring 8 ½ inches by 11 inches, with 80 pages. It is a chronological history of the organization of the fire department’s hazmat operations. There are 3 ½ pages of text to bring you through the early days to the present.

Hazardous materials have always been with us and in the fire service we have dealt with the incidents to the best of our knowledge and abilities with the resources at our disposal. I have known the author for 40+ years and can say without reservation that he is a person of accurate detail when it comes to writing about apparatus. This book is another example of his accurate reporting with the help of other sources which he acknowledges.

Rescue Company 1, organized in 1915, answered hazardous material alarms in addition of course to the other types of alarms fire and rescue emergencies. Photos of two vehicles which made up the early stages of hazmat apparatus are included, though they were not designated as such. The history has to be read carefully because much has changed and expanded since the first dedicated Hazmat 1 was organized in 1984 after responsibilities had previously been handled by rescue companies with Rescue 4 being the primary response unit with a second piece running as a support vehicle. As time went on more support units were added and they included decontamination units, containment trailers, tenders, utility units, an asbestos removal truck, and later a vast amount of other specialized apparatus when EMS was absorbed into the fire department. If I am starting to lose you or confuse you, do not worry. All of this detail is included in these pages.

I should mention that not all of the newly added vehicles were new.

Some were donated after 9-11-01 to help replace destroyed apparatus from the collapses. Others were reassigned form other designated duties and still others were refurbished and redesigned from existing trucks.

One tractor was actually acquired from the police pound. In addition, the vintages of much of these used trucks do not match the years that they were put in service, but again, the author has worked all of that out for you to relax and enjoy the book.

With few exceptions the photos are full page and all but two are color.

This is another book that has hit a home run within Fire Apparatus Journal Publications.

Four Alarms Struck in the Bronx Bronx, NY - A quickly escalating fire damaged or destroyed three commercial buildings on congested Jerome Avenue in the Bronx on the morning of July 1st.

Engine 75 arrived at 1959 Jerome Ave. shortly after 2:00 A.M. to find heavy smoke venting from a two-story 185'X100' taxpayer, with an auto repair shop on the first floor and a parking garage on the second. The “all hands” was transmitted at 2:08 A.M. for several cars burning in the parking garage.

JUMP TO FILE #070120104 to hit the flames. The fire continued to spread and at 2:19 A.M. a second-alarm was transmitted. The flames soon extended to the roof area and at 2:30 A.M., a thirdalarm was called for by Division 7.

Conditions continued to deteriorate and all members were ordered off the roof and operations went defensive. A MAYDAY was sounded for a collapse of the rear wall, but that was quickly cleared.

The fire spread to both the “B” and “D” exposures, prompting a fourthalarm. Eventually, seven tower ladders were operating as well as several multi-versals. Companies were able to work around the elevated subway tracks that ran in front of the fire building.

The fire was able to be placed PWH at 5:11 A.M., but not placed under control until 11:46 A.M. Several units remained for a watch line. No serious injuries were reported.

Stress untreated is like when you take a bottle of a carbonated drink, after you just shook it for a half an hour. You try to open it slowly and not get sprayed but you need to be very diligent. Stress may rear its ugly head in the form of a heart attack or other physical ailments or may play a number on your mind. You may not be able to concentrate or the slightest thing can get you angry. There are many ways that stress will come out.

Right now people are experiencing a lot of stress and we need to limit the stress. Please make sure that you have your personal space and personal things to release stress. Many people may want to try stress relief like others but we also need to remember that

As I go through my day, I think about how frustrated people get and that some people may not have the right way to express themselves. I have seen where some people may be destructive and others may be able to find the correct constructive outlets. We all need to find the way that is our proper stress management.

Some people may enjoy yoga or certain mindfulness activities.

Some of us may be a little more physical, like running, weight lifting, or working on construction jobs until we are exhausted.

We need to explore for ourselves
