Crews arrived around 6:40 A.M. and found a wood-framed, two-story, multi-family home with heavy fire on the second floor.

Three-Alarm Blaze Destroys Troy Building Under Multi-Million Dollar Renovation Troy, NY - On July 19th at approximately 6:40 P.M., a firefighter at Engine-4 was sitting outside of the firehouse enjoying the nice weather when they were flagged down by an individual stating that an apartment JUMP TO FILE# building down the 072519106 street was on fire.

The firefighter walked around the corner and saw heavy fire pushing from the third, fourth and fifth floors of the building and requested the dispatcher to immediately transmit the box alarm for a working structure fire. He also requested a second-alarm for 701 River Street at The Collar Factory Lofts.

Engine-4 arrived on scene within seconds and had heavy fire pushing out of the 'Delta' and 'Charlie' sides of the five-story apartment building that was under full renovation. With the heavy fire quickly spreading up the building, firefighters dumped their deck gun into the building. The second-alarm transmitted brought

additional resources into the city of Troy, including the Watervliet Arsenal and the city of Watervliet’s Fire Department.

Crews set up multiple truck companies and went into full defensive operations. While this was going on command transmitted the third-alarm, bringing two engines and a truck company to the scene from the city of Albany. With temperatures hovering around 95°F, firefighters on scene quickly became exhausted.

Having no working fire suppression systems in the building made the fire fight extremely difficult. Command advised all units on scene that they would be conducting defensive operations only, and they were not to enter the building until the bulk of the heavy fire was knocked down.

Firefighters connected to multiple hydrants on the street, laying out hundreds of feet of large diameter hose. Officers from the Troy Police Department shut down the area while the road sergeant requested the dispatcher to go to emergency calls only, as this was a large scale incident.

The fire still raged on as crews

continued to pour thousands of gallons of water into the building.

As firefighters were hitting the fire on the fourth and fifth floors, a large amount of brick broke off the building and came crashing down onto the street. J. Catalano Incident Photos was on scene and allowed for command to utilize their drones to get a full view of the roof, as most of the truck companies could not reach it. As crews began getting the fire under control, several teams of firefighters were authorized to make entry into the building and start to knock down the remaining fire on the third, fourth and fifth floors.

The blaze was brought under control after about two hours, with firefighters remaining on scene well past 12:30 A.M. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation at this time.

The building was undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation to revitalize it when the fire began.

The structure suffered severe damage and will require extensive amounts of repair.

City of Newburgh House Fire Leaves Six Residents Injured, Four Critically Newburgh, NY - City of Newburgh firefighters were dispatched on the morning of Wednesday, August 7th to a reported structure fire at 436 1st Street in the City of Newburgh.

JUMP TO FILE# Crews arrived 080819100 around 6:40 A.M. and found a woodframed, two-story, multi-family home with heavy fire on the second floor. A second-alarm was called for additional manpower to respond, bringing the West Point and Air National Guard Fire Departments to the scene.

Good Will and Coldenham Fire Departments were on stand by to cover City of Newburgh during the incident.

Mobile Life transported a total of six injured residents to Montefiore St. Luke's Hospital. Four of those transported sustained critical injuries and were later transported to Westchester Medical Center for further treatment.

The blaze, which destroyed the home and also damaged the siding on an exposure building, was declared under control at 6:50 A.M. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Mobile Life Support Services Donates Ambulance to Tivoli FD New Windsor, NY - Mobile Life Support Services recently donated one of its ambulances to the Tivoli Fire Department. The Dutchess County volunteer emergency service provider’s headquarters was damaged in a fire early in July, along with a fire engine, an ambulance and various supplies and equipment that are vital to serving their community.

Scott Woebse, Mobile Life Support Services President and CEO, presented the vehicle, complete with stretcher and stair chair, to Fire Chief Marc Hildenbrand, Rescue Captain Cheryl Hilbrandt and additional members of the Tivoli Fire Department on Tuesday, July 16th at the Tivoli firehouse, located at 2 Tivoli Commons, Tivoli, NY. “As they reel from the devastating fire, the Tivoli Fire Department’s need for support from its community is clear. This is a time for our local emergency services agencies to come together to assist our fellow providers. We hope the donation of one of our ambulances helps Tivoli recover during this challenging time and allows them the ability to more quickly get back to providing the emergency medical services essential to their community,” said Woebse.

JUMP TO FILE #072219121 Local EMS agencies and companies will be covering any calls within the Tivoli Fire District until they are back on their feet. Other neighboring organizations and community leaders have also offered assistance and support to the Tivoli Fire Department, including former TFD member, Dutchess County Executive Marcus Molinaro. The department has publicly expressed their gratitude to several area agencies that came to aid them on the night of the fire and in the following weeks.

The department has created the Tivoli Fire Company Inc. Devastation Recovery Fund where community members can make donations.

Additionally, donations may be sent to PO Box 486, Tivoli, N.Y. 12583.

Mobile Life Support Services has previously donated ambulances to various organizations, both locally and abroad. Most recently, an ambulance was donated to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office for use by its Crisis Communication team.

Man Electrocuted While Trimming Trees in Newburgh Newburgh, NY - The Middle Hope Fire Department was dispatched on the afternoon of August 7th to Lattintown Road and Babes Lane for a worker who was electrocuted while trimming trees.

The man, whose name and condition have not yet been released, was approximately 25-feet in the air on a bucket lift when he hit live power lines while working with a pole saw. The incident occurred around 1:30 P.M. and is under investigation at this time.

Florida: Barry Boulton, Sr., 67 Rank: Lieutenant Incident Date: May 7, 2019 Death Date: May 7, 2019 Fire Department: Plantation Fire Department Initial Summary: On May 7, 2019, Lieutenant Barry Boulton, Sr., collapsed after completion of a Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) drill. Resuscitation efforts were immediately rendered to Boulton who was then rushed to the Westside Regional Medical Center in Plantation, FL, where he passed away from cardiac arrest.

Idaho: Charles Alan Ruffing, 53 Rank: Senior Firefighter/Driver Engineer Incident Date: May 21, 2019 Death Date: May 21, 2019 Fire Department: Boise Fire Department Initial Summary: Senior Firefighter/Driver Engineer Charles Ruffing, who had been diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder, was found deceased in Boise Fire Department Station 6 as a result of a suicide.

Missouri: Christopher Moore, 42 Rank: Firefighter/Paramedic Incident Date: June 7, 2019 Death Date: June 8, 2019 Fire Department: Maryland Heights Fire Protection District Initial Summary: Firefighter/Paramedic Christopher Moore was on duty at the fire station on Thursday, June 6, 2019, and Friday, June 7, 2019. He responded to several fire and EMS calls during his 48 hour shift. He complained of not feeling well in the late morning of Friday, June 7, 2019, and was relieved of duty to go home and rest. He stated that he was going to follow-up with his personal physician. He was found deceased Saturday morning, June 8, 2019, at his residence. Investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Alabama: Jared Wayne Echols, 35 Rank: Firefighter/Paramedic Incident Date: June 17, 2019 Death Date: June 17, 2019 Fire Department: Springville Fire & Rescue Initial Summary: Firefighter/Paramedic Jared Wayne Echols was participating in a recruit training exercise in Anniston, AL. While at the training, he became ill and was immediately transported to the RMC Hospital in Anniston, where he passed away a short time later. Investigation into the incident continues.

Firefighter/Paramedic Echols was also an active member of the Pleasant Hill Volunteer Fire Department in Springville, AL. Mississippi: Todd Lanthrip, 53 Rank: Acting Captain Incident Date: June 12, 2019 Death Date: June 13, 2019 Fire Department: Mathiston Volunteer Fire Department Initial Summary: Captain Lanthrip responded to an automobile accident on the evening of June 12, 2019. He returned home after the response. At approximately 0130hrs the morning of June 13, 2019, he became unresponsive. Attempts by his wife and first responders were unsuccessful and he passed away.

Maryland: Michael "Mike" Powers, 70 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: June 25, 2019 Death Date: June 25, 2019 Fire Department: Libertytown Volunteer Fire Department Initial Summary: Firefighter Michael Powers responded to the scene of a fatal vehicle accident. While at the scene, he collapsed and suffered a medical emergency. He was immediately transported to the Frederick Memorial Hospital where he passed away a short time later. Community Comes Together to Support West Crescent Firefighter Battling Schwannoma Brain Tumor Clifton Park, NY - The West Crescent Fire Department in Clifton Park came together in July to help one of their own firefighters after she was diagnosed with a Schwannoma brain JUMP TO FILE# tumor. Most 19- 072519107 year-olds are out enjoying life with friends and getting ready to start college in the Fall, but not Firefighter Kelsey Murphy.

Back in September of 2018, Kelsey was diagnosed with a Schwannoma brain tumor. Knowing that she needed the best care possible to overcome the cancerous tumor, Kelsey’s doctors immediately sent her to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City after discovering the tumor.

When Kelsey arrived at the hospital in September, she was met by a team of world class surgeons that would perform the complicated operation on her brain. Following the successful surgery, Kelsey endured a long recovery at home with her family before returning to the fire department as an active member. Now one year later, she has gone under the knife again to remove another part of the tumor and also to reduce the swelling on her brain.

Kelsey has been an active interior firefighter and EMT with the West Crescent Fire Department in Saratoga County since 2017. She's described as being a strong willed individual with a heart of gold and a passion to serve her community, but now Kelsey needs the help of her community while she receives radiation treatments. Although a large portion of the surgery is covered under her insurance, travel, home care and not being able to work has caused a financial ripple.

On July 14th, over 300 people attended an event that was held for Kelsey to help raise funds for her and her family in their time of need. Additionally, Veteran Woodworks donated a custom wooden flag with Kelsey‘s name on it as way to remind her to stay strong and keep up the fight.

If you'd like to make a donation toward her recovery, a Go Fund Me page has been set up in Kelsey's name, or you can mail a check to West Crescent FD at 1440 Crescent Rd., Clifton Park, NY 12065, made out to Kelsey Murphy.

This dish came together one day when I needed something quick, flavorful and healthy. Normally I try to steer clear of shrimp when cooking in the firehouse.

The last thing you want to do is have a run come in while cooking, and have to reheat shrimp upon returning to the station. Overcooked shrimp reminds me of that piece of gum you have been chewing for way too long, rubbery and flavorless…in other words, not good!

But sometimes in life, you need to take a gamble and roll the culinary dice. Luckily this time it paid off with uninterrupted cooking and a delicious meal.

Sambal and Hoisin are not words often heard at the firehouse kitchen table, but this recipe is sure to change that. Sambal, particularly Sambal Oelek, is a chile sauce originating from Southeast Asia. It's made with hot red chiles, salt and some vinegar, and quite honestly I think it's more versatile than the more popular Sriracha sauce. It definitely packs some heat but isn’t overpowering and allows the chile flavor to shine.

You could definitely use it on its own but I find it used best when mixed into sauces, marinades, mayo or anything else that needs

a kick. You can find it in most grocery stores now, probably right next to Sriracha coincidentally.

Hoisin is a Chinese sauce made from a combination of fermented soybean paste, garlic, chiles, vinegar, sesame oil, and some sort of sweetener. Think of it almost like Chinese BBQ sauce!

However, it's very potent in flavor so use much more sparingly than you would American BBQ sauce.

It's most commonly used in Cantonese cooking on Peking Duck, which is delicious if you've never tried. When combined with the Sambal, you end up with a sauce that hits those salty, sweet, spicy notes that we all love. This would be killer on some wings too….just sayin'

SAMBAL-HOISIN SHRIMP WITH BOK CHOY FRIED RICE Serves: 3-4

Ingredients:

For Shrimp: 1 lb. Shrimp; peeled and deveined 3 Cloves of Garlic, minced 2” Piece of Fresh Ginger, grated or minced Small Bunch of Fresh Basil, leaves picked 3 Scallions, thin sliced ½ C Hoisin Sauce 2 Tsp. Sambal Oelek Sauce (usually found next to Sriracha) 1 Tbs. Canola or Vegetable Oil For Bok Choy Fried Rice: 3 C Rice, *see note below 8 Heads of Baby Bok Choy, sliced into 1” pieces 1 Tbs. Soy Sauce ¼ Canola or Vegetable Oil 1 Clove Garlic, minced *Day-old rice works best for stir fries. If you don’t have day-old rice, cook a batch and spread out on a sheet pan to cool for at least an hour.

Procedure:

For the Shrimp: -Combine all the ingredients in a ziplock bag or bowl. Stir/shake to combine. Add shrimp and let

marinate for 30 minutes to an hour. Remove from marinade and set aside.

-Heat a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat, add a few drizzles of oil. Carefully add the shrimp to the pan, flipping as needed to cook through and just until they turn pink. Remove the cooked shrimp, toss with some of the basil and scallion and set aside.

For the Rice: -Clean out the pan or heat another large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.

Add the oil, followed by the bok choy. Stir the bok choy until it just starts to wilt.

Add the garlic and then the rice. Continue stirring while the rice starts to crisp up a bit. Add the soy sauce.

Serve the fried rice, topped with the shrimp and more basil and scallion.

Port Crane Battles Stubborn Second-Alarm House Fire Port Crane, NY - Just before 11:00 A.M. on August 5th, Broome County Communications dispatched Port Crane Fire Co. (37) to a reported house fire at 177 Route 7B in the town of Fenton. Dispatch quickly advised Chief 37B that they were JUMP TO FILE# taking multiple calls 080719104 of a working house fire and the secondalarm was requested.

Filling out the firstalarm was Tanker 49 (Sanitaria Springs) and Engine 59-1 (Five Mile Point).

First arriving crews, including Squad 37-2, Tanker 49 and Engine 591, found a two-story wood-frame structure with heavy smoke and fire from a one-story addition on the 'Charlie' side. Crews quickly stretched multiple one-and-three-quarter inch lines and began an aggressive transitional attack by first knocking down heavy fire in the one-story addition and then moving into the original part of the structure and working their way up to the second floor.

A water supply using a portable pond and tanker shuttle was set up at the top of the steep driveway. Interior crews advanced through the second floor, extinguishing all visible fire, but were met with difficulties digging out hidden fire traveling in void spaces.

Due to some pre-1900 construction, including thick tongue and groove boards and heavy duty lath and plaster with thick wire mesh along with many layers of roofing materials, significant pockets of fire had taken hold in the roof.

Crews worked for over one hour to gain access and extinguish the pockets of fire with variable levels of success. As fire began to make its way through the roofing materials, a decision was made to reposition some apparatus and utilize an aerial master stream to rip open the roof and finish extinguishing the pockets. Quint 43 (Harpursville) was moved into the driveway and positioned for this operation.

Companies responding on the second-alarm included Chenango Bridge (39), Chenango (66), Hillcrest (55), Chenango Forks (44), West Colesville (51), Harpursville (43), Eastern Broome FAST Team, Broome County Fire Coordinators, Port Crane Fire Auxiliary and Broome Ambulance. Also assisting on scene were NYSEG Electric, NYS DOT, NYSP and the Red Cross. Many of these same departments had spent most of the night at a separate two-alarm fire in the Town of Chenango that had occurred less than 12 hours prior.

The fire is being investigated by Broome County's Fire Investigation Team. Crews were able to salvage items for the family from both the first and second floors of the structure. A kitten escaped the fire, but a bunny on the second floor unfortunately did not make it out. No one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.

Police Pursuit in Newburgh Ends with Serious Multi-Car Crash Newburgh, NY - New York State Police were in pursuit of a vehicle traveling on Route 52 in the Town of Newburgh before it crashed head-on into another vehicle at 90 Route 17K JUMP TO FILE# just before 11:30 080119104 A.M. on August 1st.

Orange Lake and Winona Lake Fire Departments, along with multiple ambulances were called to the scene. Good Will FD set up a landing zone at Auto Plaza where a Medevac landed and transported one subject to Westchester Medical Center.

Route 17K from Route 300 to Fletcher Drive remained closed for hours while New York State Police conducted an investigation into the crash, which involved four cars in total.

Greene County, NY - On July 8th, the Medway-Grapeville Fire Co. held a drill at their firehouse to go over the safety and landing protocols of LifeNet of New York. They had a great turn out of attendees who learned a lot from the instructor, and also enjoyed the live touch down and take off of the helicopter. Members from other companies attended the drill as well and left with a certification of the class.

Washingtonville Holds Wet-Down for New Tanker

Washingtonville, NY - On July 6th, the Washingtonville FD held a wet-down for their new rig, designated Tanker 577. Fire companies from all around attended to wet down the new tanker as well as each other. T-shirts and mugs were sold, and food and beer was available underneath a tent in the back. A good time was had by all who attended!

The Middletown Fire Department uses this Chevy as their chief vehicle.

Radiation and Crisis Chaplain's Corner Didymus McHugh

In our life, we can learn lessons from our Radiation classes or how it was known in the days of Civil Defense, "Radiological Defense."

When dealing with radiation we were taught about time, distance and shielding. We can survive some doses of radiation, when we are given it a little at a time and not that much over a few years. We can survive some radiation if we are far enough from it.

How many of us were effected by the radiation from Japan when they had their problem? We also see that when we go for an X-ray, they put the lead apron on us before the technicians move behind their shielding.

We also use the same recipe in fighting fires. We are in the heat of the battle for a certain time, usually one or two cylinders of air, then its time for rehab. We have distance that we are from the fire, because some are hotter than others. And we have shielding of our turnout gear and the hosestream. The water acts as our shield as we are in the battle.

Back in the days of coats and pull up boots and Fireball gloves, we really understood the shielding that water could provide.

With Ems, you have the exposure to the patient and shielding of what bloodborne pathogen

PPE you are using.

If we look at that and apply it to crisis, or disaster or bad stuff in life, I am sure that we can all handle the little stresses in life. We can handle the button that comes off our shirt or running out of coffee.

But once in a while we need to remember the importance of exposure.

We use time, distance and shielding when dealing with toxic people in our lives. We only speak to them when we need to. Time of Exposure. We may wave to them from across the parking lot and not go into detail when we talk with them, keeping them at a Distance.

We may communicate with the person by use of only certain methods or we may use someone else to be their point of contact.

Shielding.

Granted we are supposed to love our enemies and we may have some people that just drain energy from us. When Christ was in the crowd of people, He was able to feel energy leave when the woman just touched the hem of His garment. Other times his disciples shielding Him by keeping the crowd away, at certain times. We all need to keep our strength and energy up for the things that are valuable in life, like sitting down with the person who is truly in pain and needs someone with compassion.

Troy Crews Make Fast Work of Two-Alarm Fire Troy, NY - On August 5th around 4:26 P.M., the City of Troy Fire Department responded to 254 2nd Street in South Troy for a reported structure fire. The caller reported that the UMP TO FILE# building was on fire J080619102 and that there was possible entrapment on the second floor.

Engine-6 arrived on scene and had heavy fire and smoke pushing from the second floor. Engine-6 transmitted the Signal 30 and requested the next engine to hit the hydrant on the corner of 2nd Street and Jefferson Street. The battalion chief requested the second-alarm to be transmitted, bringing the city of Watervliet and the Watervliet Arsenal into the scene.

Firefighters from Engine-6 forced entry into the second floor and pulled a hand line to the landing where they encountered heavy fire pushing down the stairwell. Crews opened up the hand line, driving the fire back into the apartment and quickly knocking down the heavy fire conditions.

Truck-2 arrived on scene and firefighters immediately went to the roof to start venting the building.

Heavy brown and black smoke pushed from the second floor as crews continued to knock down the fire inside the apartment.

Truck-1 arrived on scene and sent its crew to help firefighters inside on the second floor.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in less than 30 minutes, but had exten-

sive overhaul and fire still remaining in the cockloft area. The homeowner had just returned home when she discovered that it was her apartment that caught fire.

Neighbors assisted the elderly woman to a nearby porch and comforted her while the police department requested the Red Cross to the scene to assist her further.

The fire is under investigation at this time and no injuries were reported. Before this fire, City of Troy’s Fire Department ran multiple reported structure fires during the day time, all of which were only minor incidents.

Newburgh, NY - It’s with regret that we announce the passing of Life Member and Past Chief Carl Stillwaggon. Carl was recently awarded a plaque at the Cronomer Valley Fire Department for 70 years of service as a volunteer firefighter before he passed away on July 30th. Carl joined the Department in 1949, only 15 years after it was formed. He worked his way up to Chief of the Department from 1966-1967. He comes from a family of firefighters that were instrumental in the development of the fire station and grounds, training and leadership, and overall progressive thinking needed for todays fire service.

Carl served in the US Army during the Korean War from 19501952. He owned and operated Newburgh Envelope Corp. on Chamber St. in Newburgh, NY, before moving out to it’s Route 300 location in the Town of Newburgh. He was a proud member of Gardnertown Methodist Church. Carl was predeceased by his wife, Bar-

bara Stillwaggon, and brother, Elbert Stillwaggon. He is survived by his brother, Don Stillwaggon, Past Asst. Chief of CVFD, and his son, Stuart Stillwaggon, Past Chief of CVFD with his wife Carlene. Carl also has two granddaughters, Amy Stillwaggon and Brittany Stillwaggon, who he loved so dearly.

He was happy to find out that Cronomer Valley had purchased two “red” fire apparatus recently. The 1949 Mack Fire Engine was a favorite of his because “real fire trucks are red!”.

Carl loved telling stories of going to fires in the old days and always put a smile on your face.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family in their time of mourning. May his dedication as a Christian, family man, business leader, and firefighter be an inspiration to us all. God be with you Chief and we’ll take it from here!

This is a hard cover book measuring 6 ½ inches by 9 ½ inches with 224 pages. It is the memoirs of a London firefighter who put 13 years on the job. Now you may say that it seems like he left the job early and that would be the case, but the author did see his share of action, a selection of which is written about here.

He is single, lived with his mother and had a younger brother.

There is also a brief mention of a daughter. He worked at many different fire brigade stations in some different capacities and his accounts make for interesting reading, especially when it has to do with the different lingo spoken between the American and British

languages. There are explanations to the reader for certain terms and then there are others that you can pretty much figure out.

He explains the command levels as well as the types of apparatus that they use. His calls, or “shouts” as they refer to them as, are diversified from comical, like the swan rescue to the very tragic like the poisoning of two children by their mother. But the most tragic is a fire that involved a large hi-rise residential building which resulted in many deaths and injuries. His input with this fire was not the initial fire attack but rather the overhaul, mop up and recovery which affected him so deeply that combined with other gruesome work that he was called to do collectively caused him to eventually leave the job. There are a lot of details in the descriptions of the operations within the 17 chapters.

I sympathize how a firefighter could psychologically suffer.

After all, other than in initial training, one does not know what it is like to be in a burning building with minimal to no visibility, unless he or she experienced it within their own home or a building that they had been in. The same goes for medical calls involving the seriously injured or dead!

This is a book worth reading!

It is one in which a person contemplating a career in the fire service would find enlightening!

Salem Rescue Squad Purchases SUV for Paramedicine Program Thanks to Mary McClellan Foundation Grant Salem, NY - The Salem Rescue Squad is an active partner in the Mobile Integrated Health Systems Community Paramedicine program. This program has been successful in filling a service gap for those in need but that do not qualify for Home Health Care. Salem Rescue Squad members are currently visiting clients in Hebron, Salem and Greenwich.

The Salem Rescue Squad would like to thank the Mary McClellan Foundation for its generous grant in support of the Squad’s community paramedicine program and emergency medical services operation.

The grant funding assisted in purchasing a four-wheel drive SUV vehicle and items needed to equip the unit for service. This vehicle is primarily used for community paramedicine visits, but also by Salem Rescue Squad members in attending out-of-town training and in responding to emergencies. The vehicle is equipped with emergency response equipment such as medical supplies, radio, and in the future, lights and siren.

House Fire in Delmar Caused by Lightning Strike Delmar, NY - On July 29th at 8:36 P.M., the Slingerlands Fire Department along with Elsmere, Delmar, Selkirk and North Bethlehem, were dispatched for a confirmed working structure fire at 632 Kenwood Avenue. The caller reported smoke and flames coming from the roof of the building.

Car 31-01 arrived on scene and had heavy smoke and fire pushing from the eaves of the house. Command checked to make sure that everyone was out of the house while Truck-22 connected to the hydrant in the front of the house.

The next arriving engine on scene pulled two hand lines into the house and made their way to the second floor. Truck-22’s crew went to the roof and started to

JUMP TO FILE #080619103 venting while interior crews had heavy smoke and heat pushing down on them on the second floor with no visible fire. The interior operations officer radioed out to command that the fire was running the roof.

As additional firefighters arrived on scene, command had them stage in the front of the house. Heavy storms with lightning moved through the area while firefighters were operating inside of the home. Exterior operations notified command that they had heavy fire pushing from the rear of the 'Charlie' side of the house.

The interior crew reported that they had very tight, hoarding conditions on the second floor. As heavy fire pushed from the vent hole in the roof, interior crews started to pull the ceilings on the second floor. As soon as they were able to make a large enough hole in the ceiling they began to knock down the heavy fire.

Crews were able to bring the fire under control within about 45 minutes, with heavy overhaul following. One firefighter was transported to the hospital for a minor injury. The home suffered heavy damage from the blaze, which is believed to have been caused by a lightning strike to the roof.

Car Lands on its Roof in Delmar Delmar, NY - Delmar and Elsmere Fire Departments were called to the area of 46 Hudson Avenue in Delmar around 4:15 P.M. on July 5th for a car accident with reported rollover. Upon their arrival crews found one vehicle on its roof that had struck a parked car, causing the rollover. The driver of the vehicle was able to self-extricate and refused medical attention.

Crews Respond to Fuel Truck Rollover in Marlboro

Marlboro, NY - The Marlboro FD responded to a fuel truck rollover on Route 9W in front of the Marlboro Highway Department on July 10th. Route 9W was shut down in both directions during the incident. Mutual Aid that responded to the scene included the Milton, Cronomer Valley, Newburgh, Air National Guard and Orange Lake Fire Departments. Mobile Life ALS, the Marlboro Police Department, and New York State Police also responded.

Brush Fire Keeps Mobile Life Support Services Rensselaer County Fire Departments Busy Announces Launch of Remote

Poestenkill, NY - The Poestenkill Fire Department was dispatched for a reported brush fire at 580 Blue Factory Road on July 14th. When the chief arrived on scene he had a large area of the property on fire that was spreading quickly.

With temperatures in the 90's, Command knew that additional assistance was going to be needed to help bring the fire under control, so Grafton, Center Brunswick, Wynantskill and Eagle Mills were requested to the scene for their brush fire equipment.

Crews quickly began knocking down the large brush fire, using a chainsaw to cut down trees that caught fire, dropping them into the middle of the field. Because the

JUMP TO FILE #072519105 area was in a remote location, brush truck operators were forced to travel out to the main roadway to meet tankers and fill up before coming back to the scene.

The property owner stated that they were burning a pile of brush when it quickly got away from him. Crews remained on scene for over four hours conducting heavy overhaul of the fire area to make sure they wouldn't need to come back for any rekindles.

There were no injuries reported.

Operations Center New Windsor, NY - Mobile Life Support Services, the largest emergency medical provider in the Hudson Valley, recently announced the launch of a Remote Operations Center. This is the first of its kind to be operated by Mobile Life to provide service to the Hudson Valley region.

The Remote Operations Center (ROC) is a 2018 Mercedes Sprinter chassis that has been retrofitted with three work stations, enabling the company’s communications specialists to engage with multiple 911 centers and other emergency service agencies via radio and phone. It's a self-contained, climate controlled environment and has the capability to run on its own generator or be “shore lined” to a fixed power source, allowing it to be deployed for an indefinite length of time. The vehicle is also equipped with programming that communicates with Mobile Life’s Computer Aided Dispatch network for call-taking,

The primary role for the vehicle is to serve as a secondary mobile dispatch center at large-scale, planned events and mass casualty incidents and can serve as, or be stationed at a command post, enabling incident commanders’ easy access to critical information regarding emergency medical services. Additionally, the ROC can also serve as a primary dispatch center in the event that Mobile Life’s New Windsor headquarters were ever to become damaged or need to be evacuated due to environmental or man-made incidents.

“This is an exciting rollout for us as a company. The Remote Operations Center allows Mobile Life dispatchers and communications specialists to better coordinate with each other as well as additional emergency service agencies

when we are providing service for large-scale community events, such as Fourth of July festivities throughout the region and the Hudson Valley Balloon Festival,” said Mobile Life President & CEO Scott Woebse. “Having this vehicle in place will allow us to maximize the efficiency of our specialty services and better manage the efforts of our team while maintaining our daily operations.”

Mobile Life’s ROC joins a fleet of more than 60 emergency vehicles serving communities across the Hudson Valley, including Orange, Dutchess, Rockland, Ulster and Westchester counties.

The vehicle was designed by Mobile Life administrators, supervisors and communications specialists in conjunction with First Priority Group, Orange County 911, Goosetown Communications and Verizon.

SUV Driver Dies in Latham After Crashing Head-On Into Cement Truck Latham, NY - On July 13th at 11:00 A.M., the Latham Fire Department, with the Schuyler Heights Fire Department and Colonie EMS, responded to 517 Watervliet-Shaker Road for a reported head-on car acci- JUMP TO FILE# dent involving an 072519108 SUV and a concrete truck.

The first arriving chief on scene had a three-vehicle accident with heavy entrapment in the SUV, which had crossed over the double yellow line before crashing head-on into the cement truck. The driver of the second car involved as well as the driver of the concrete truck were both able to self-extricate before first responders' arrival.

Colonie EMS arrived on scene and immediately began to work on the entrapped driver in the SUV. Firefighters from Rescue-4 arrived on scene shortly after and began to work on freeing the SUV driver, who unfortunately passed away on scene due to severe injuries sustained.

The scene was then turned over to the Town of Colonie Police Department's Traffic Investigation Unit who utilized all of their resources, including a drone that did 3D scene recreation and photography of the incident.

It's unclear at this time as to what caused the driver of the SUV to cross over the double yellow line and hit the cement truck.

Firefighters and EMS helped remove the victim from the crushed SUV before clearing the scene.

Police remained on scene for most of the afternoon following the deadly crash.

eLEND joins Heroes Mortgage Program to offer down payment assistance for heroes

For many Americans, funding the down payment necessary to realize a dream of home ownership simply is not possible; and squirreling away the dollars to do so on a limited budget could mean several years of renting and waiting to buy a house. In some cases, first responders and other community service employees have trouble affording homes in the areas where they work.

With a purchase as big as buying a home, a little help can go a long way.

The Advantage Program, introduced to the Heroes Mortgage platform by eLEND, helps hometown heroes like police officers, volunteer and paid firefighters, EMS workers, medical professionals and educators purchase a home within the community where they work, even in high-cost areas. The unique down payment assistance program was specifically designed for those who make a difference in other people’s lives, as well as first time home buyers.

Grant provides help to homebuyers Many buyers wait patiently on the sidelines, saving money and watching interest rates rise. Unlike many other home buying assistance programs, eLEND’s Advantage Program provides a grant for the down pay-

ment. These resources can immediately build a borrower’s buying power, helping them act on a purchase more quickly for either that first home, or a move-up home as the family has grown and needs more space.

Qualified buyers can receive grants up to 2% of the purchase price, minimizing the

down payment dollars needed at closing.

The grant is “forgivable” so it doesn’t have to be paid back, and there are no resale or borrower repayment restrictions. In the state of Wisconsin, appraisal cost (up to $700) is credited back at closing. This program is not yet available in Hawaii or Washington.

To qualify, a borrower need only meet one of the following very flexible requirements: a current, retired, volunteer or professional first responder (police officer, firefighter, paramedic, emergency medical technician, etc.), educator, medical personnel, civil servant or military personnel, or a first-time homebuyer or meet certain income requirements.

Motorcyclist Injured in Multi-Vehicle Crash Near Newburgh

This patch belongs to Elmira Fire Department, located in Chemung County, NY.

Newburgh, NY - On July 28th, the Middlehope FD was dispatched to a three-vehicle MVA involving a motorcycle on I-84 eastbound. Town of Newburgh EMS, Mobile Life ALS and New Windsor's Flag car were at the scene. The injured motorcyclist was taken to a landing zone set up by Goodwill FD in the Mid Valley Mall parking lot where he was then transported by Life Net to Westchester Medical Center. New York State Police are investigating the cause of the crash. All eastbound traffic was stopped and Town of Newburgh Police assisted with ramp closures during the incident.

Levittown, NY- On Sunday, July 7th, the Levittown Fire Department in Nassau County held a wet-down ceremony at the department's Station 3 located on North Wantagh Avenue.

This was the department's second JUMP TO FILE# wet-down of the 071419101 month, as they had received several new pieces of equipment.

This event was for Engine Co. 7 who had recently received a new 2019 Pierce Enforcer designated Engine 627, and the Rescue Squad who received a new 2019 Demars Ambulance from the Nassau County Contract which was outfitted by Proliner Rescue Vehicles.

The wet-down was led by Commissioner Joseph Bentivegna, who gave the opening remarks and welcomed members of the community as well as dignitaries who were in attendance.

During the opening remarks it was mentioned that Commissioners Bentivegna and Steinwall both co-led the truck committee for Engine Co. 7’s new purchase and made sure that the committee had a good mix of feedback by having both senior and younger members of the company come together to see all options available to them. It was also mentioned that Ambulance 6213 was purchased with funding from a grant in the amount of $250,000 which 3rd Deputy Chief Behrens helped to secure.

After the opening remarks and prior to the big christening of the apparatus, the custom cut key to the engine was presented to the officers of Company 7's Captain, David Barroca, and his Lieutenants, Thomas Steiwall, Jr. and Kyle Stephens. Once both apparatus underwent the ceremonial breaking of the champagne over the front bumpers, the engine and ambulance were relocated to Marginal Road where they underwent the super soaking wet-down performed with the assistance of various other companies from Levittown as well as neighboring departments.

Congratulations to the Levittown Fire Departments on their two new pieces of apparatus that should serve the community for many years to come!

Horrific Crash in Holbrook Seriously Injures Three Holbrook, NY - SCPD 5th Precinct detectives and crime scene units are investigating a car accident that occurred on July 25th after a car traveling northbound on Nicholls Road, just south of Greenbelt UMP TO FILE# Pkwy. in Holbrook, J072619100 crossed the center median and struck a second car traveling southbound around 8:40 P.M. The impact of the crash left two people trapped who had to be extricated by Holbrook firefighters using multiple tools. In total, three people were rushed with serious injuries to local hospitals.

Overturned Car with Entrapment in Nesconset

Nesconset, NY - On Monday, July 1st at approximately 12:15 P.M., the Nesconset FD and Suffolk County PD were activated for a motor vehicle accident with overturn at the intersection of Hillside Avenue South and Nesconset Highway. Upon arrival, SCPD officers confirmed an overturn with two people still inside the vehicle. One person self-extricated from the vehicle prior to first responders' arrival, while the other required assistance from Suffolk police officers. Both occupants were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Mastic FD Unit 5-12-26 is a 28-foot 2005 Aluminum Construction Fire and Rescue Operations Boat.

This boat is equipped with a 550-GPM pump for fire suppression, a thermal camera, Sonar, and dive doors for dive missions. The boat was originally white in color, but was re-wrapped to red in 2018.

Hot Temps Spark Outside Fire at Home Depot in Shirley Shirley, NY - On Sunday, July 14th at about 12:50 P.M., the Mastic FD was activated for a report of a fence fire in the area of Beacon St., between Green St. and the William Floyd Parkway.

Captain Gene JUMP TO FILE# Martucci (5-12-50) 071819110 was first to arrive and advised that he had an area of brush on fire behind the Home Depot. He was followed a moment later by Chief of Department Rudy Sunderman (5-12-30) who advised the first and second due units that they would need to stretch booster lines to knock down the fire and protect the automobiles in the parking lot of Home Depot.

Engine 5-12-3 was the first due engine to arrive on scene and Lt. Rudy Sunderman and his crew began to stretch two booster liners to extinguish the fire. The second engine arrived on scene a short time later and Lt. Januszkiewicz had his crew go to work with an additional booster line on the other side of the fence in the parking lot and wet down the grass/mulch, as well as the vehicles that were parked in close proximity as a precaution.

Fire Police closed the road near the scene while firefighters were operating. All units took up within about 15 to 20 minutes.

Ronkonkoma Responds to Late Night House Fire

Holbrook, NY - The Ronkonkoma FD was activated for a working fire at 4 Knickerbocker Avenue at 12:26 A.M. on July 7th for heavy fire through the roof of a two-story private dwelling.

All occupants safely evacuated the structure. Mutual aid came from Nesconset, Holbrook, Holtsville, Centereach and Lakeland. The fire was knocked down at 12:50 A.M.

From Reported Transformer Fire to Working House Fire in Mastic Mastic, NY - On July 11th at about 11:44 P.M., the Mastic FD was activated for the report of a transformer fire in the area of Poospatuck Lane and Eleanore Ave. in Mastic.

Chief Rudy Sunderman was the first to arrive on scene and found a home with fire through the roof.

Chief Sunderman requested that County reactivate for a working fire and start mutual aid to the scene.

First due engines quickly stretched a line and hit the hydrant. Firefighters had to use the K-12 saw to gain ac-

JUMP TO FILE #071419105 cess to the building due to it being boarded up and secured. Once they were able to successfully gain access to the interior, firefighters began to make a quick attack on the fire.

Although access to the upstairs was hampered slightly due to the stairs being compromised with some holes in them, a quick knock down was made and mutual aid companies

then assisted with overhaul. Firefighters remained on scene for approximately two hours.

Mutual aid was provided by Center Moriches, East Moriches and Manorville Fire Departments. EMS Rehab was provided by Mastic and Shirley Ambulance companies. The Brookhaven Fire Marshal's Office and Suffolk PD's Arson Squad were on scene to investigate.

Car Fire in Brentwood Brentwood, NY - The Brentwood Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire around 12:45 P.M. on Monday, July 22nd. The vehicle erupted into flames on the Long Island Expressway westbound, just before the Sagtikos Parkway overpass. The fire was quickly extinguished without incident.

Shirley, NY - Around 10:42 A.M. on July 24th, Mastic EMS and Mastic FD were toned out for traffic collision with overturn on Roberts Road east. Mastic's chief arrived on scene to find that there was no overturn, but he had a twovehicle crash with one car into a building.

JUMP TO FILE #072419100 Mastic EMS arrived on scene and checked out all people involved in the crash while Mastic firefighters went right to work cleaning up debris from the crash.

Mastic's chief requested the fire marshal to respond and check out the damage to the building.

Mastic EMS transported an unknown amount of people to a local hospital. The cause of the crash is unknown.

Late Night Fire Destroys Home in Centereach

Centereach, NY - Firefighters from multiple departments responded to a working house fire at 52 Hammond Road on the night of July 27th. First arriving units were met with a heavy fire load at the rear of the house that was spreading quickly. Crews brought the fire under control within about 25 minutes. No injuries were reported, however one elderly female was looked at by a paramedic on scene.

Vehicle in Mastic Beach Goes Up in Flames

Mastic Beach, NY - On August 1st, the Mastic Beach FD was activated for the report of a vehicle on fire on Lynbrook Dr., near Dogwood Road west. Assistant Chief Fred Loiacono (513-31) was the first to respond and while en-route, was advised by county that PD was on scene with an involved auto.

The chief arrived a short time later and confirmed that the vehicle was well involved. (5-13-8) arrived next and the crew began to quickly stretch lines and put water on the fire, making a quick knock down. All units were back in service in under 40 minutes.

Ronkonkoma, NY - A Ronkonkoma man was killed on Wednesday night, July 3rd after his motorcycle suddenly veered off the three-lane highway, striking a guardrail and ejecting the rider over 30-feet into the air. The 48-year-old male was pronounced dead a short time later.

Queens, NY - FDNY Fire Marshals have determined that the July 21st fatal two-alarm fire at 9158 117 St. in Queens, in which two civilians were killed and one suffered serious injuries, was accidental, caused by a damaged air conditioner cord. A working smoke alarm was not present.

FDNY urges New Yorkers to check cords regularly and replace any damaged or frayed cords immediately; and remember, working smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms are a critical component of your escape plan. Have a working smoke and CO alarm, or combination smoke/CO alarm, on every level of your home, including basements and where you sleep.
