P ickle Factory Blaze Goes to Three Alarms in Paterson PATERSON, NJ - Firefighters battled a stubborn three-alarm blaze that destroyed a pickle factory early Saturday morning, March 25th. Around 6:00 A.M., a reported building fire came in for the area o f E lli son St. and Straight St. Battilion 3 ar rived on scene and confirmed a working fire at 220 Ellison St., with fire showing from a one-story com m ercial build ing. Com panies ar rived on scene, established water supplies, stretched lines and made access to the building via loading dock doors. Firefighters w ere met with heavy fire conditions throughout the building and set up for defensive operations. A second-alarm was transmitted to bring additional water to supply tower ladders. Eleavy smoke billow ed from the en tire structure as part o f the r o o f c o l lapsed, emitting heavy fire through the r o o f in the rear. A third-alarm was transmitted and Ladder 3 was ordered to set up in the rear o f the structure. Two tower ladders, one ladder pipe and multiple handlines at tacked the fire for over an hour be fore it was knocked down, however firefighters w ould remain on scene for extensive overhaul. N o injuries were reported, and the fire is under investigation.

On Saturday, March 4th, the Marlboro Fire Company held their an nual Awards Dinner, where John Borden was recognized for 50 years of active service. Marlboro Mayor Jon Hornik and Monmouth County Commissioner Ross Licitra presented John with proclamations, and the fire company presented him with a watch. John has served as Asst. Chief, Chief, Trustee, Life Member, Relief Association Trustee, and currently serves as a Fire Commissioner. John retired as an Asst. Chief for the NJ Department of Human Services, and served Marlboro Township as a Fire Sub Code Official/Fire Official for 38 years, retiring in 2017. He currently works at the Monmouth County Fire Academy and is a facilitator for Kean University Fire Service Di vision. Also recognized at the dinner were William Higgins for 5 years of service, and Asst. Chief Evan Lavigne for 10 years.

Dettinger, 55 Rank: Chief Incident Date: November 30,2022 Death Date: November 30,2022 Fire Department: Union Fire and Hose Company #1 o f Dover, PA Initial Summary: On Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2022, at approximately 1:23 a.m. Chief Troy M. Dettinger responded to an EMS call at a residence. After the call, he returned home. At approximately 9:30 a.m. that same morning, police performed a welfare check after Chief Dettinger did not report to work. He was found deceased in his home from an apparent heart attack. Wyoming: Bruce Lang, 68 Rank: Training Officer Incident Date: December 15,2022 Death Date: December 15,2022 Fire Department: Pine Haven Volunteer Fire Department Initial Summary: On Thursday, Dec. 15, 2022, after being paged to respond, Training Officer Bruce Lang arrived in his privately owned vehicle at the scene o f an individual driving an ATV that had fallen through the ice o f a lake. While attempting to rescue the vic tim, the vehicle that Training Officer Lang was in also broke through the ice. The initial victim was rescued by fellow firefighters; however, Training Officer Lang did not sur vive. Connecticut: Matthias Wirtz, 46 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: December 26,2022 Death Date: December 26,2022 Fire Department: North Haven Fire Department Initial Summary: On Monday, Dec. 26, 2022, Firefighter Matthias Wirtz responded to a reported structure fire at a home on Quinnipiac AVE. While working on the exterior of the home operating the engine pump, Fire fighter Wirtz became ill and was immediately transported to the Yale-New Haven Medical Center where he passed away a short time later from an apparent heart attack.

Illinois: Brian Rehnberg, 50 Rank: Firefighter/EMT Incident Date: December 25,2022 Death Date: December 25,2022 Fire Department: North Park Fire Protection District Initial Summary: On Sunday, Dec. 25,2022, Firefighter/EMT Brian Rehnberg responded to an activated alarm with carbon monoxide present. After the incident, he returned home. At approximately 2:30 p.m. that day, he was found unresponsive by his wife. He was im mediately transported to the local hospital where he was pronounced deceased from an apparent heart attack.
Illinois: Larry Peasley, 76 Rank: Chief Incident Date: December 7,2022 Death Date: January 4,2023 Fire Department: Maroa Countryside Fire Protection District Initial Summary: On Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2022, a structure fire was reported to the Clin ton Volunteer Fire Department. The Maroa Countryside Fire Protection District was re quested as mutual aid. Chief Larry Peasley ar rived at the fire station and was dressing out in fire gear to respond when he collapsed and went into cardiac arrest. CPR was immedi ately performed and he was then rushed to the hospital where he remained until his passing on Wednesday, Jan. 4,2023. Washington: Charles “Chad”Cate, 46 Rank: Captain Incident Date: January 12,2023 Death Date: January 12,2023 Fire Department: Clallam County Fire District #3 Initial Summary: On Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023, at approximately 2:25 a.m., Captain Charles “ Chad" Cate returned to the fire sta tion after responding to a fire alarm activation at a commercial building. Later, at approxi mately 4:00 a.m., after heading back out to the site o f an earlier house fire, he texted a fel low captain and the duty chief to state that all was well at the scene. At 7:00 a.m. that same morning, he was discovered deceased in his bunk by members o f his crew when they at tempted to wake him. The cause o f his death has yet to be determined. Ohio: Kevin Dailey, 72 Rank: Safety Officer Incident Date: September 18,2022 Death Date: January 24,2023 Fire Department: Middleport Fire Department Initial Summary: On Sunday, Sept. 18, 2022, Safety Officer Kevin Dailey was return ing from a call when the fire apparatus he was driving rolled over the side o f a hill and crashed. Safety Officer Dailey was thrown out o f the track, where he was pinned underneath. Other firefighters who were returning from the same call saw the track on its side and used airbags to lift it and pull him out. He was flown to the Columbus, OH, hospital where he underwent surgery on Monday, Sept. 19, 2022. Safety Officer Dailey remained in the hospital until his passing on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2023. He was also a previous member o f the Richland Township Fire Department and for mer chief o f the department. Rhode Island: Robert Thomas Gardner, Jr., 55 Rank: Firefighter
Incident Date: January 25,2023 Death Date: January 26,2023 Fire Department: Richmond-Carolina Fire District Initial Summary: On Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2023, Firefighter Robert “Bob" Thomas Gardner, Jr., was at the fire station putting ap paratus and equipment back in service, fol lowing a residential structure fire call. He then returned home. Sometime in the middle o f the night, he suffered an apparent heart attack and passed away. Oregon: Brandon Norbury, 50 Rank: Firefighter/Paramedic Incident Date: February 3,2023 Death Date: February 3,2023 Fire Department: Gresham Fire Department Initial Summary: On Friday, Feb. 3,2023, Firefighter/Paramedic Brandon Norbury was at the training center performing hose evolu tions. Afterwards, he was pale and told his co workers that he didn't feel well. A short time later, he collapsed and life-saving efforts were immediately performed. He was then rushed to Portland Adventist Hospital where resusci tation efforts continued. He passed away a short time later from cardiac arrest. Hawaii: Tre’Evans-Dumaran, 24 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: January 27,2023 Death Date: February 4,2023 Fire Department: County o f Maui Department o f Fire and Public Safety Initial Summary: On Friday, Jan. 27,2023, Firefighter Tre' Evans-Dumaran, while assist ing public safety employees, was swept into a storm drain by powerful floodwaters. He was dragged over 800 feet through the drain where it exited into the ocean. He was rescued by his crew, who immediately began resusci tation efforts. Firefighter Evans-Dumaran re gained a pulse and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center where he remained in the critical care unit until his passing on Saturday, Feb. 4,2023. Wisconsin: Todd J. Yandre, 61 Rank: Chief Incident Date: February 15,2023 Death Date: February 15,2023 Fire Department: FLake Mills Fire Department Initial Summary: On Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2023, and Wednesday, Feb. 15,2023, Chief Todd J. Yandre attended live evolution fire training at the fire station. Later in the evening, on Wednesday, Feb. 15,2023, Chief Yandre, while at the local gym, collapsed and was pronounced deceased at the scene from an apparent heart attack.

HOBOKEN “ WAR YEARS” FIRE VICTIMS REMEMBERED UPS & DOWNS Notes from Ron Jeffers
In the 1970's, the city o f H o b o ken w as known as a tough blue-col lar city with w aterfront d ock s and ship yards, factories, local delis and shops; and, w here every on e knew each other in their respective neigh borhoods. D uring the late 19 70' s and into the early 19 80' s , in what w as know n in the fire service as part o f the “War Years”, H obok en w as also known for its fire tragedies. A series o f multiple-alarm fires destroyed many bu ild in gs and too k many liv es betw een 1979 and 1982. An estimated 56 p eop le w ere killed and thousands w ere d isp la ced during that time. M o st o f the fires w ere deter m ined to be arson in a speedy gentrification o f the Mile-Square-City. “The dem and for high-end apart ments, the high number o f rent-controlled buildings and w eakened rent control rules are believ ed to be the im petus for fires, historians say,”in a Jersey Journal article. “D rive ten ants out, renovate, re-rent at higher
price. Repeat.” N o on e w as ever charged for arson. A 1979 fire that in volved an o c cu p ied m ultiple dw ellin g at 131 Clinton Street took the the lives o f 22 residents and 130 w ere d is placed. Many o f these fires started overn igh t and many started in the public hallway. Fire and sm oke rose through the tenement hallw ays like a chimney. S om e burned out tenements w ere in such a dangerous shape that dem olition crew s cam e in to tear dow n the bu ild in gs w h ile searches w ere bein g con ducted for bodies. Heavy equipm en t d ropp ed debris in the m id d le o f the street for a detailed search for m issin g victims. O n the afternoon o f M arch 12th, loca l o fficia ls and firefighters as sem b led at T om O liv ieri Park, on W illow Avenue. A H o b o k en Fire Victim's M em orial P roject plaque w as u n v eiled that com m em orates the 56 lives that w ere lost in the city fires o f that time. In addition, the fires are subject to an exhibit, by photo-based artist and arts educator, Christopher L opez, at the H o b o k en H istorical Museum. Firefighters quickly went into action and made a “rescue”, set ting the bird free. Firefighters w ere able to bring them up to the street level and a n eigh bor planned to g et them reunited w ith their mother.

UPS: N ew probationary firefight ers in Flackensack are Charles R ed stone, Anthony Alexander, Ruben Ceballus, Anthony Colantino and Corey Eyer. DOW N S: A full-sized scooter, that had been left charging, ignited a fire on C om m ercial Ave. in Pal isade Park, March 24th. A ccording to the Daily Voice, its lithium bat tery was found on a nearby r o o f after the fire broke out. Field, Mount Pleasant Ave., noon-6 p.m. DOW N S: D eptford Firefighter, and past chief, Jeff Pfeiffer, suffered a cardiac arrest after returning from an alarm, March 23rd, at the Alm onesson Lake firehouse. A ccord ing to the G loucester County O.E.M., Pfeiffer served the tow n ship as a firefighter for over 50years. UPS: A s B ergen County ce le brated the com pletion o f a major modernization project at the Law & Public Safety Institute, in Mahwah, a training facility street named “Larry Rauch B oulevard”was re vealed. This was in honor o f the for mer institute's safety coordinator Larry Rauch. He served in that p o sition for over 18-years and dedi cated his life to the fire service. The Navy veteran w as a 49-year m em ber o f the U pper Saddle River Fire Department and served as ch ief on seven different terms. C h ief Rauch died in 2021.

Richard Tremitiedi, 84, passed away on March 23rd. He served as the Hoboken Fire Department's Chief of Department from 1991 to 1995, when he retired. The chief was well known around the state through his Fire Smart, Inc. study group. He served the City of Hoboken for 35-years. The U.S. Army veteran joined the H.F.D. in 1960. Within five years he was appointed to the rank of captain, the youngest fireman to be promoted to that rank at the time. He was promoted to deputy chief on March 1,1976 and to Chief of De partment on March 1, 1990. Tremitiedi graduated from Essex County College in 1984, while serving on the department. He was a trustee for FMBA Local 500, a member of the American Legion, Elks, Knights of Columbus, NJ Fireman's Retirement Association and the Community Emergency Response Team. On March 28th, firefighters lined up in front of St. Francis Roman Catholic Church to pay their last respects to the dedicated firefighter.

“ Outside Fire” Extends to Occupied Dwelling JER SEY CITY, NJ - Initially reported as an outside fire in the rear o f a room in g house, flames quickly extended up to the top floor o f the three-and-half story, singleroom -occupancy building on Sher man Place, March 8th. At the rear o f the structure is a parking lot with its entrance on Central Avenue, and right across the street from the North D istrict p o lice precinct. The fire w as re ported at approximately 10:45 P.M. by police, according to city spokes w om an K im berly Wallace-Scalcione. P olice officers w ere rem oving tenants to safety as fire units ar rived. H eavy fire and sm oke c o v ered the rear o f the building and a second-alarm was transmitted. This was later follow ed by a third-alarm.

Tim othy A. Sullivan, 67, was a volunteer firefighter and B ergen C oun ty Sheriffs o ffice r for 30years. In his capacity with the fire department, he served as captain o f the E m ergen cy Squad from 1981 to 1983, fire in sp ector and EMT. H e jo in e d the fire depart m ent in 1973 and w as active at the tim e o f his death. O n his law en forcem en t side, he served as presiden t o f the N e w Jersey P o lice H on or L egion ; and, he w as a current executive board member. Sullivan w as active w ith many other p rojects during his life, in clu din g the ASPCA . A s a kid, he always w anted to be a c o p or fireman. H e g o t his w ish on both sid es o f p u blic safety.

This includes a roofmounted 20' crane with light heads and camera, 6-bottle air cascade system with booster, 10,000-lb Warn winch and a pto operated 42 kW generator. It carries air bags, saws, chainsaws, concrete drills, carpentry equipment and much more.
In East Brunswick District 2, Engine 805 is a new Pierce Enforcer top-mount 2000-gpm/750-gwt/40-gft unit. It has a six-man cab with storage space and a portable radio gang charger. In addition, two-speed lay beds, scene and hose bed lights, roll-out trays, booster reel mounted above the pump on the officer's side, and more. It was sold by Fire & Safety Services.
Plainsboro Tanker 49 has been assigned a 2023 Peterbilt/6x4 tandem chassis/E-One 2250-gpm/3250-gwt ap paratus. There is an extended front bumper with discharge and intake gates, hydraulic racks for ladders and portable pool and hard suction hose, roll-out tool trays, wheel well air bottle space, a deck monitor mounted above the pumper, and additional features. Elmwood Park Home Damaged by Morning Fire ELMWOOD PARK, NJ - An Elmwood Park home was damaged by fire in the early morning hours of March 23rd. At 7:00 A.M., fire companies were dispatched to 205 Phillip Ave., on a reported house fire. As Chief Robert Bruce signed on air, a radio report of fire showing from the rear of the home was received. On arrival, he confirmed a working fire with a re-dispatch of the alarm confirming the fire. Heavy fire was venting out of a rear upper floor window. The heavy fire was knocked down in less than 30 minutes. There was severe damage to the top floor and a first floor bathroom, as well as a set-back roof and the ceiling. Mutual aid from Fair Lawn, Garfield, Saddle Brook and Clifton assisted. No injuries were reported.

Paterson Holds Fire Department Promotional Ceremony PATERSON, NJ - City firefight ers, family, friends and local officials enjoyed a day o f celebration at Fire Fleadquarters, March 28th, with the promotion o f several members, and tlie addition o f two new firefighters. Chief o f Depart ment Brian McDer mott informed file group that promotions do not come easy. It takes a lot o f hard work and dedication. The new leaders will be an asset to the de partment. Mayor Andre Sayegh said file promotions come just days after city firefighters battled a multiple-alarm fire in a local pickle factory, and prevented file fire from extending to neighborhood structures. Promoted to file rank o f Assistant Chief was Alejandro Alicea. New Deputy Chiefs are Michael Cleenput, Jose Molina, Jason Macones and Arthur Woods. Promoted to Battalion Chief were Craig Bland, Ryan Shouldis, John Mauro, Jr., Santino Falcone, Gioccliino Panico and Ryan Fender. New Captains are Tucas Zarate, Teandro Enriques and Adrian Evans III. Newly appointed firefight ers are Kevin Laverde and John Dun can. Lenore Byfield was named Provisional Supervising Public Safety Telecoimnunicator.

He's sold. A young lad, wearing a firefighter's helmet, was entering his West New York apartment building with his mom when he saw a fire truck out front. Members of North Hudson Rescue 1 has just completed a rescue-assist call in the building. Captain Tom Van Leuven, left, and Firefighter Steve Alvarez invited the youngster to examine the fire truck. The boy and his mother had big smiles on their faces as mom took photos of her happy young fire buff.
In February, numerous mutual aid fire companies from Bergen, Essex and Union counties moved into North Hudson when the re gional fire department experienced two 5-alarm-plus fires at the same time. One in West New York and the other in Union City. The mutual aid companies either went to work at a fire or re-located to houses and answered numerous other alarms. The local firefight ers heard many questions from the out-of town members on how do they cope with, and operate on, such narrow and congested streets? “ A Firefighter’s Gloves” A Firefighter's Gloves hold many things From elderly arms to a kids broken swing From the hands they shake and the backs they pat To the tiny claw marks of an other treed cat At 2 am they are filled with the chrome From the DWI who was on her way home And the equipment they use to roll back the dash From a family of 6 she involved in the crash The brush rakes in spring wear the palms out When the wind does a "90" to fill them with doubt The thumb of the glove wipes the sweat from the brow Of the face of a firefighter who mutters "What now" They hold inch and three quar ters flowing one seventy five So the ones going in, come back out alive When the regulator goes; then there isn't too much, But the bypass valve they ea gerly clutch The rescue equipment, the ropes, the C-collars; The lives that they save never measured in dollars Are the obvious things fire fighters gloves hold Or, so that is what I've been al ways told But there are other things Fire fighters Gloves touch Those are the things we all need so much They hold back the rage on that 3 am call They hold in the fear when your lost in a hall They hold back the pity, agony, sorrow They hold in the desire to "Do it tomorrow"
A gloves just a glove till it's on firefighters Who work all day long just to pull an all-nighter And into the fray they charge without fear At the sound of a "Help" they think that they hear When firefighters hands go into the glove It's a firefighter who always fills it with love Sometimes the sorrow is too much to bear And it seeps the glove and burns deep "in there" Off comes the gloves when the call is done And into the pocket until the next run The hands become lonely and cold for a bit And shake just a little thinking of it And they sit there so red eyed with their gloves in their coats The tears come so fast that the furniture floats They're not so brave now; their hands they can't hide I guess it just means that they're human inside And though some are paid and others are not The gloves feel the same when it's cold or it's hot To someone you're helping to just get along When you fill them with love, you always feel strong And so when I go on my final big ride I hope to have my gloves by my side To show to St. Peter at that heavenly gate Cause as everyone knows, fire fighters don't wait.

A True Quint We all know that the word, “ quint”means five. It pertains par ticularly to ladder trucks. To distin guish it from other ladder trucks it was one that had (1) a volume pump, (2) a bed o f hose, (3) a water tank, (4) a complement o f ground ladders and (5) an aerial device. A pumper was a triple combination unit having a pump, water tank and hose bed. Adding a complement of ground ladders made it a “quadru ple combination unit” or quad. Adding an aerial device made it a quint. The January, 2022 apparatus column briefly covered information on quints. Today, there is a differ ence between the ground ladder re quirement for ladder trucks as opposed to that o f quints. A ladder truck today is required to have 115feet o f ground ladders, whereas a quint o f today is required to have 94-feet. Ladder 36 o f the Hillsbor ough Township Fire Department, a Seagrave, is a quint with 94-feet of ladders, though it is still designated as a “ Ladder Company.”It has a smaller water tank than the usual 500-gallons, but I’ m not sure if that was to allow for more space for ground ladder complement. Most other 75-footers with pumps, tanks and hose do not carry enough ground ladders to be called “ quints.”It is just a convenient des ignation. The photo o f Ladder 36 is featured this month. Other photos this month include a Spartan ER pumper from the Fairnount Fire Company in Washington Township (Morris County), which is in Long Valley. Two other photos are from Hudson County, namely an E-ONE Typhoon rear-mount from Hoboken and a Pierce pumper from Harrison. Jumping down to Burlington County we have two Pierce pumper/tankers from Medford Township. One is on a Peterbilt chassis and is from the Union Fire Company, and the other on a Veloc ity chassis from the Taunton Fire Company. Our final photo is o f a Demers Type 1 ambulance from the North Plainfield Fire department in Somerset County. Demers is built in Canada. In dealer news. Fire & Safety Services has received the following Pierce orders: for Gloucester Town ship, Chews Landing (Camden County) a stock Enforcer mid mount tower; for Parsippany-Troy Hills District 5 (Rockaway Neck) an Enforcer pumper (Morris County); for Hillsborough Town ship District 1, a Saber pumper (Somerset County), and for Demarest (Bergen County) an En forcer pumper. Defender Emergency Products has received an order from Atlantic City (Atlantic County ) for a Rosenbauer 100-foot TDA. Specs include a Commander 60-inch cab length
