Garfield Second-Alarm Destroys Apartm ents and Firem atic Building GARFIELD, NJ - At 4:40 A.M. on the morning o f January 24th, the Garfield Fire Depart­ ment was dispatched to a fire alarm activation at 450 River Dr. P olice units ar­ rived and reported smoke and fire showing from the second-floor apart­ ments, above Fire­ matic Safety Equipment. Police officers located three residents who were evacuated to safety from the building.

C hief o f Dept. E J Morano ar­ rived and confirm ed a working fire. First due companies made an interior attack to knock down the heavy fire, but rapidly deteriorat­ ing conditions caused firefighters to evacuate the fire building.

Heavy fire blew through the roof and out o f several windows. Part o f a r o o f and stairwell collapsed during the operations. Several outside hand lines and Truck 4's ladder pipe went into operation to knock down the fire.

N o serious injuries were re­ ported, but a police officer re­ quired medical attention for a slip and fall. The fire was declared under control just after 7:00 A.M. Mutual aid from Saddle Brook, E lm w ood Park and Wallington assisted on scene, along with Hackensack FD's air unit. The M oonachie Rescue Squad fire rehab unit provided shelter and coffee along with Box-54. C om ­ panies covering empty firehouses included Wallington, M aywood, Rochelle Park, Lodi and Clifton.

Fire O fficials along with the Bergen County Arson Squad are conducting the cause and origin investigation, which is ongoing.

Back home; former Paterson FD Ladder 3, a 2005 E-One 100’ tiller that was in service until 2017 when it was replaced by a Pierce tiller.

The rig was designated a spare until it was sold to North Hudson Regional Fire & Rescue in 2020 and was designated spare Ladder 7. The rig did not work out as planned and it came back to the PFD in late 2021. It again was placed in the spare pool and recently put into front line service as Ladder 1. Here, still in NHRF&R colors, its ladder pipe is put to use at a 2nd alarm on February 15th.

Crew s ar­ rived and im m ediately began searching the area where the kids were last seen. Firefighters searched the entire area, shoulder to shoulder, several times, with

After som e time, it was re­ ported that the children had exited the ice and ran from the scene scared. It was later confirm ed that they had been found safe at home, and crews made them selves avail­ able.

Popular Kearny Deputy C hief R etires Notes from Ron Jeffers

After serving the town o f Kearny, and dedicating a go od por­ tion o f his life to the Fire Depart­ ment, Deputy C h ief Robert “O zzie”Osborn has retired.

On January 25th, the Kearny Av­ enue firehouse was filled with local and area firefighters, family mem­ bers and friends to wish the well re­ spected ch ief a lon g and healthy retirement.

C h ief Osborn was appointed to the department on August 6th, 1983. He was promoted to captain on September 15th, 1990, and to deputy ch ief on August 1st, 2001.

He spent his career on the line. He had no desire to “ride a desk".

As a member o f FEMA's New Jersey Task Force 1, he was part o f the elite team that responded to areas that suffered a national disas­ ter, like Hurricanes Katrina and Harvey, to assist those in need.

At his retirement celebration, C h ief o f Department Joe Mastandrea presented Osborn with a cur­ rent roster o f the KFD members that he worked with. In addition, C h ief Mastandrea located a roster from the era when C h ief Osborn was hired, which he also received.

Deputy C h ief Osborn was dedi­ cated to his jo b and the safety o f firefighters and residents. Drills with fellow firefighters were part o f his dedication. A ccording to “The Observer,”after a fire was extin­ guished, D.C. Osborn was known to bring journalists inside the effected building to observe the damage in order for them to better understand how a fire started and spread.

The ch ief loved sharing knowl­ edge. As part o f the New Jersey Deputy Fire Chiefs Association, he and retired C h ief o f Department Steve Dyl actively assisted the as­ sociation conducting their annual fire safety seminars at a local Kearny grammar school.

He told members to “carry on”, and “See ya at the big one!”.

DOW NS: Firefighters battled a fire in a storage facility on Cheesequake Rd. in Sayreville, Jan. 11th, that went to 3-alarms. Police said the fire started in a unit that con­ tained several cars.

UPS: A friendly Rottweiler unex­ pectedly took a dive into Newark Bay, Jan. 16th, and his owner rushed in after him. A Bayonne p o­ lice officer was flagged down and called in the incident. “Members o f the Bayonne police, fire, Hudson County Sheriff, M cCabe Ambu­ lance and Bayonne O.E.M. were on the scene and able to pull both Brody (the dog) and his owner to safety,”Mayor Jimmy Davis wrote on his Facebook page.

UPS: In February, the Plainsboro career firefighter staff changed schedules to provide more sendee to local residents. Firefighters will now be on duty from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week, instead o f Monday through Friday. Volunteers are harder to com e by, as per their Facebook post. The change has di­ vided the staff into two shifts. In ad­ dition, Michael Guzy has been promoted to captain o f “B” Shift.

DOWNS: A pre-dawn classroom fire at the Haskell Elementary School in Wanaque, Jan. 18th, caused a significant amount o f smoke damage in the building, offi­ cials said. N o children were in the school when the fire started, shortly before 7 a.m.

DOW NS: Trenton firefighters pulled two squatters from a burning Genesee St. dwelling, Jan. 30th, and one o f those victims died from smoke inhalation, according to WPVI-TV. The second person was in stable condition. The fire spread to two neighboring homes, leaving seven people displaced.

DOWNS: Officials said two peo­ ple died after a MVA involving a fire unit from Lawnside and an auto, near Warwick Rd. & North White Horse Pike, in Magnolia, Jan. 19th.

The rig was responding to a call in M agnolia at the time o f the crash, officials said. Two occupants o f the auto were killed. Three firefighters on the apparatus were not seriously injured. They were taken to Jeffer­ son Stratford Hospital, officials said. The accident was under inves­ tigation according to a Camden County Prosecutor's statement.

DOWNS: A fire in large piles o f metal burned at the Eastern Metal Recycling Terminal in Port Newark, Jan. 25th, sending heavy columns o f smoke over the area. The smoke drifted over Hudson and Bergen counties and New York City. Nu­ merous departments received calls for smoke or an odor o f plastic burn­ ing, during the early morning hours.

The lieutenant crawled past trash, strollers, bikes, boxes, etc., he later said, while hearing a scream and cough. The woman was laying on the landing at the r oof door, which was padlocked. Unable to open the door under such condi­ tions, the lieutenant took the victim back down the stairs, through smoke and flames. “I put her shirt over her face, put her on my chest, and went down the stairs backwards,”Ivan­ icki said. Passed the hallway debris, he made it to the first-floor and out to safety with his victim. C h ief o f Department Patrick Trentacost said he planned to nominate Lt. Orange Firefighters Battle Second-Alarm in Auto Body Shop ORANGE, NJ - Firefighters fought to contain a two-alarm fire late Tuesday night, February 15th, as heavy flames tore through a two-story auto body shop at 617 Scotland Road.

A reported structure fire with small explosions in an auto body shop was dispatched around 11:00 RM. Orange FD's Battal­ ion Chief arrived on scene and re­ ported light smoke showing, and after a quick investigation re­ quested a working fire to be trans­ mitted.

Firefighters began an interior attack with a one-and-three-quarter inch hand line and made their way to the second floor where they reported heavy smoke show ­ ing, but no signs o f fire. C om ­ mand noticed conditions beginning to deteriorate, and pop ­ ping sounds from exploding paint cans, and all members were or­ dered to evacuate the building.

Once all members were ac­ counted for, they would go to ex­ terior operations.

Fleavy fire and smoke con ­ sumed the two-story, 'F' shaped building, and a second-alarm was transmitted. The fully involved structure emitted heavy embers and threatened two exposures on the 'C' and 'D' sides o f the build­ ing. Montclair and Millburn put their aerials into operation, along with a deck gun and several twoand-a-half inch hand lines.

Command requested an addi­ tional engine above the secondalarm as firefighters were able to contain the fire in just over an hour. Exposures 'C' and 'D' suf­ fered minor exterior damage, and the fire was held to the original building.

Mutual aid from Maplewood, Montclair, South Orange, Millbum, Irvington, West Orange, and Belleville assisted on scene. Nutley hazmat was requested due to chem icals within the building, and the DPW was also requested with salt due to icy conditions.

No injuries were reported, and the cause o f the fire remains under in­ vestigation.

Heavy Fire Damages Two Hackensack Dwellings HACKENSACK, NJ - On Tuesday, January 18th at 7:28 P.M., Hackensack Fire headquar­ ters received multiple calls report­ ing a structure fire at 27 Franklin Street.

Upon arrival. Deputy 1 had heavy fire in two wood-frame dwellings and transmitted a sec­ ond-alarm. Companies put multi­ ple hand lines into service, knocking down fire in both the first and second floors o f both dwellings. Fire extended into the

3P attic o f both dwellings. Fadder companies from Hackensack and Englew ood ventilated the r oof o f both dwellings, and assisted with searches and opening up in both dwellings.

The fire was brought under control and extensive overhaul was conducted for a little over one hour. Additional companies from

Hackensack, Bogota, Teaneck and R idgefield Park assisted at the scene. Hackensack UMC, BFS and AFS, kittle Ferry, BFS and Holy Name BFS were on scene and transported six people with minor injuries to the hospital.

During primary searches, Fad­ der 1 rescued a dog and returned it to its owner. The fire is currently under investigation by Hackensack Fire Prevention.

Upon arrival, not knowing where the fire was located and with no smoke showing, firefighters and Battalion Chief Colavitti did a search of the first and second floors. Battalion Chief Colavitti lo­ cated the fire in a rear bedroom and closed the door as two lines were being stretched. He then declared that he had a working fire, but held it to a first-alarm assignment.

It was placed under control within 15 minutes and there were no injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation by Passaic de­ tectives who were called to the scene.

A North Hudson firefighter pulls ceilings to reach flames burning in the ceiling of a top-floor apartment at a 41st Street, three-story, mixed occupancy building in Union City, January 31st.

PATERSON, NJ - A boarded up, two-and-a-half story frame dwelling was consumed by flames on a frigid February 15th morning, leaving little o f the structure re­ maining.

When first due units pulled out o f the Riverside Fire­ house at about 5:45 A.M., they immedi­ ately knew they had a job. Fieavy smoke and fire was venting from all floors o f a home at 142 Fafayette Ave., just a couple blocks from the firehouse.

Searches were not possible due to the heavy fire.

Companies quickly went to work establishing water supplies to protect the exposures. Fuckily there were vacant lots on either side o f the fire building, but the high heat caused minor extension to both exposures. A second-alarm was called for manpower as two el­ evated master streams, several lines attacking the fire building, and lines stretched into the expo­ sure building were necessary to hold the flames.

The roof soon collapsed in fol­ lowed by the outside walls, leaving only part o f the front wall standing.

The heavy fire slowly darkened down, and in about one hour the fire could be contained, then placed under control at about 7:30 A.M. Ice covered much o f the fireground, causing numerous slips and falls, but no serious injuries.

The cause is under investiga­ tion, but squatters that were known to live there is being looked into.

As fire involved the second-floor of a Wade Street home, and rapidly extended to the attic, Jersey City's first arriving engine companies came across two blocked fire hydrants on each side of the block, in 25-degree weather. First water was imperative to attack the fire. Engine Co. 13 members took out the window of a parked auto to access their hydrant. Engine Co. 22 went over the car block­ ing their hydrant with front suction hose, for a water supply. A second-alarm was transmitted for the labor intensive fire on January 22nd.

This month’s Little Big Guy is Brush 21 of the Spotswood Volunteer Fire Department in Middlesex County. It is a 1988 Ford F-350 Custom 4x4 with a gas engine and a five speed transmission. It has a Darley 125 AE pump and a 200-gallon water tank. Other features include a brush cage, a six-ton winch, one-inch forestry hose, two whip lines, shovels, a brush hook and spotlights.

The Passaic Fire Department operated at a 4th-alarm at 896 Main Ave., January 26th. Rescues were made by arriving firefighters during the early stages of the fire. Lt. Joe Ivanicki grabbed a 65year-old woman who was trapped by smoke and flames. The fire all but destroyed the building, which is at the corner of Harrison Street and Main Ave. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries from slips on the ice. This was Passaic’s second major fire this month.

It came less than two weeks after the 11-alarm fire on Passaic Street that took more than 200 firefighters two days to fully extin­ guish. Companies assisting Passaic on scene came from Pater­ son, Clifton, Walington, East Rutherford, Garfield, Rutherford, Carlstadt and others.

While I realize that all o f the states in which this review is seen may not test in the same way, this video impresses to the student to pay strict attention to what the testers use for the exams such as bibliographies, etc., regardless o f any one fire department’ s sop ’ s, which may not pertain to the exam itself. My opinion is that this DVD is a valuable tool to prepare a candidate for an entrance exam by way o f tips and principles.

Pole Fire Causes Power Outages in Beachwood BEA CH W OOD, NJ - At ap­ proximately 1:30 A.M. on January 17th, the B eachw ood FD re­ sponded to the report o f a trans­ former fire on Birch, near B eachwood Blvd.

Upon arrival, we found the transformer on fire with wires arc­ ing and also burning. Requests were made to JCP&L to respond to render the power safe so the fire could be extinguished. JCP&L crews were not available and did not respond for almost four hours even after being advised the arcing wires and fire were burning through the pole and collapse o f

JCP&L was tied up on other inci­ dents throughout the county.

Residents were advised to re­ main inside their hom es in the event that power lines came down, and a safe area was established. At approximately 5:15 A.M., the top section o f pole burned through and collapsed, bringing the transform­ ers to the ground, on fire.

JCP&L arrived shortly after the pole collapsed. BFD crews

built berms around the storm drains to prevent the transformer oil from entering the storm drains (and eventually our river) as best as possible. Berkeley Haz Mat and NJ DEP advised. After the power was shut down, the fire in the roadway was extinguished.

N o one was injured and no hom es were damaged. The area was blocked off as the power com ­ pany made repairs to restore the power.

DAMIENDANIS Saddle Brook firefighters made quick work of this house fire on January 22nd. At approximately 10:22 P.M., a general alarm was struck reporting a house fire at 317 Hayes Dr. Arriving chiefs had smoke showing from the 'Delta' side exterior wall of a dwelling.

Lines were stretched for a quick knock down. Mutual aid from Rochelle Park and Elmwood Park assisted on scene, along with the Saddle Brook Vol. Ambulance Corps. Covering at firehouses were Garfield and Fair Lawn. No injuries were reported.

RONJEFFERS North Hudson fire companies were dispatched to smoke in the area of Bergenline Avenue and 41st St., Union City, on the evening of January 31st. That was followed with an address of 4101 Bergenline Avenue, where first arriving units found smoke show­ ing from the upper floor, in the apartment area, above a popular restaurant. Firefighters lined in and opened walls and ceilings to control the fire, within an hour.

Working Garage Fire on Hackensack St. in Wood-Ridge WOOD-RIDGE, NJ - At ap­ proximately 5:59 RM. on January 21st, the Wood-Ridge Fire De­ partment was dispatched to Hack­ ensack Street, between 4th Ave. and Wood-Ridge Ave., for a reported garage fire.

Upon arrival, there was heavy smoke coming from the detached garage. A Working Fire was struck, fol­ lowed quickly by a second-alarm cov­ erage assignment.

On narrow Franklin Street, Hackensack firefighters were able to set up Ladders 1 and 2 for access to the attic areas of two burning dwellings on a 28-degree January 18th evening.

GARFIELD, NJ - Garfield firefighters made quick work of a house fire at 168 Malcolm Avenue on the evening of February 10th. The blaze broke out on the second floor of a two-story, woodframe home at approximately 10:44 P.M. Firefighters knocked the flames down within minutes of their arrival, and the fire was declared under control around 11:30 P.M. Mutual aid from Wallington assisted on the scene while companies from Saddle Brook and Elmwood Park cov­ ered at empty firehouses. A preliminary investigation suggests that a faulty exhaust fan may have been the cause of the fire.

Due to gusty winds making visibil­ ity very difficult, police urged motorists to stay indoors to avoid the bitter cold and hazardous road conditions. Snow drifts rose to almost 10-feet as the Cape May Department of Public Works cleared the roads. The Cape May Fire Depart­ ment cleared snow and ice from more than 300 hydrants.

They also fielded a number of medical calls, activated alarms and stuck vehicles throughout a 24-hour period.

T ru ck s fro m B e r g e n a n d H u d so n C o u n tie s This month, representing Bergen County, are vehicles front the Cresskill Fire Department. It was or­ ganized as a volunteer fire department in 1858, however the town was not in­ corporated as a borough until 36 years later. The borough is a little over twosquare-miles o f which just about all o f it is land. Currently, it is a career department during the week and op­ erates one station. The ambulance squad, which at one time was part of the fire department, is housed next door. In their photos are three first line apparatus; a 2001 Ferrara Inferno pumper, a 1989 E-ONE 80-foot rearmount, and a 2008 Ford/Odyssey res­ cue. It is believed that the aerial either came from or was destined for Ken­ tucky, but the sale never took place and hence it became a Cresskill truck.

What is interesting to note is that when E-ONE first came out with a shorter rear-mount they manufactured an 80-footer as opposed to other com­ petitors who offered 75-footers. I thought at the time that it was a good idea to offer a slightly longer ladder.

But for some reason, 75-footers stayed popular with many fire chiefs so E-ONE went to a 75 and discontin­ ued the 80. They also have a pumper formerly from the Boro of Middlesex FC 3. It was a 1983 Mack CF, which was converted by glider kit to an EONE in 1998. Cresskill presently has an E-ONE pumper on order.

Hudson County makes up the rest o f the apparatus photos with the ex­ ception of one, all Hudson County rigs are Pierce. One is a top mount pumper from Keamy and the rest are two pumpers and one mid-mount platform from Jersey City. Due to the fact that many fire districts have not yet received their funding which has caused a light reporting from most of the dealers, an eighth photo is being added to this month’ s column to fill in some space. It is a special operations truck with trailer from Bayville in Berkeley Township (Ocean County).

It is used for water and ice rescue and communications.

We have learned some news in­ volving Burlington County. New Gretna has ordered an E-ONE Ty­ phoon e-MAX 1500/1000 top-mount pumper probably to replace a 1994 HME/Alleheny pumper. Also, the Seagrave 95-foot Aerialscope re­ cently replaced in Willingboro is now in Upper Chichester, PA. In dealer news, VCI Emergency Vehicle Specialists reports the follow­ ing ambulance deliveries: to the Silverton EMS in Toms River Township (Ocean County), the first of two Hor­ ton 603 Type l ’ s on Ford F-550 4x4 chas­ sis. To the Waterford EMS in Atco (Camden County), a Ford AEV E-350 Firstar T3. To Natan Medical Trans­ portation, New Brunswick (Middle­ sex County), a Ford T-250 AEV, medium roof Transit and to ABBA Medical Transportation in Aberdeen Township (Monmouth County), two Ford T-250 AEV medium roof Tran­ sits.

Absolute Fire Protection reports that they have received an order from the Parsippany-Troy Hills Fire District 6 (Morris County) for an E-ONE HP 100 platform on a Cyclone chassis.

The Beachwood Fire Depart­ ment is heartbroken over the sudden loss of former member, David Kanko.

Dave began his firefighting ca­ reer in the Beachwood Vol. Fire Department serving with us from 1988 to 1996, where he be­ came our Lieutenant.

During that time, Dave would also become a career firefighter with the McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Joint Base Fire Department, where he was recently pro­

moted to the rank of Captain.

After moving from Beachwood to Stafford Township, Dave be­ came a member of the Stafford Township Vol. Fire Department and has proudly served with Station 47 since.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Kanko and Snelling families, David's many friends, and his brother and sister fire­ fighters throughout the area.

Rest easy brother, you will be missed.

State Medical Boards Fail to Discipline Dangerous Doctors Many Advocates Feel Med­ ical Boards Are Protecting Doc­ tors, Not Patients

We trust doctors to diagnose correctly; we trust surgeons to per­ form procedures to the best o f their ability; we trust nurses and hospitals to protect us if som e­ thing goes wrong. And most often, they do. But numerous respected studies over the years, including this recent report from John H op­ kins Medicine, calculate that more than 250,000 deaths per year in the U.S. are due to medical error.

That makes m edical errors the third leading cause o f death in the country.

N ow w e’ re learning about shocking reports on the w id e­ spread failure o f state medical boards to adequately police their own. State medical boards are re­ sponsible for disciplining physi­ cians when they are found incompetent, mentally or sexually abusive, or have com m itted a crime. But a significant body o f research indicates that these regu­ lators often look the other way.

One recent analysis found that o f the 8,600-plus physicians with more than five malpractice pay­ outs on their record, only 25 per­ cent had a medical board licensure action o f ANY kind. Another study show ed that only two per­ cent o f physicians were responsi­ ble for half o f all malpractice payouts over 25 years.

The California state medical board placed him on probation from 2015 until 2022, citing 40 instances o f negligence and incompetence. Yet he was al­ low ed to keep practicing if he com pleted courses in clinical training, ethics, and m edical record-keeping. N ew or existing patients have not been notified o f this physician's probation or pre­ vious mistakes.

-An Indiana orthopedic sur­ geon settled more than five mal­ practice suits in 10 years, but none o f that information was available to patients. After losin g surgery privileges at two hospitals, he lied to the Indiana state medical board about his suspensions. He then m oved to Florida and is still prac­ ticing, although h e’ s already racked up three sanctions from the state Department o f Health.

-An Ohio State University physician was im plicated in 177 cases o f sexual abuse o f former students. The Ohio state medical board admitted to “[failure] to act when it holds credible, actionable information about one o f its li­ censees, such as it had [in this case].” The m edical board has

Trial by Jury Is Best Protec­ tion When Medical Boards Fail It can seem overwhelming when government regulators and others we trust fail us, but there is plenty you can do to protect your­ self and your family.

First, do as much research as possible on any healthcare provider you choose. Online data includes sites like Vital Signs from advocates like ProPublica.

Then support several recom ­ mended reforms, including public access to information on doctors who are a danger to their patients.

This includes: -Establish a Federal Bill o f Pa­ tient Rights -Allow public access to the National Practitioner Data Bank -Stand with patients instead o f special interest lobbyists who want to make it harder for doctors to be held accountable Finally, recogn ize that your best protection from a bad out­ com e at a dangerous corporate nursing home, negligent hospital, or substandard clinic remains your constitutional right to a trial by jury and your ability to hold them accountable if they hurt you or loved ones.
