Passaic, NJ - A gas-fed fire that originated in the basement of a building containing a deli with apartments above, spread throughout and took hours to control on April 18th. Firefighters were dispatched to 234 Main Avenue at about 5:30 A.M. A heavy smoke condition was issuing from the structure, but no fire was showing.

Flames Involve Two North Bergen Buildings North Bergen, NJ - A fastmoving fire involved two dwellings on April 23rd. North Hudson firefighters were dispatched to a reported fire at 907 Columbia Avenue at about noon time. North Hudson Engine Co. 1 turned the corner of 10th Street and Paterson Plan Road, near their firehouse, and radioed in a smoke condition in the area. When the company pulled up, they reported fire in two buildings and ordered a second-alarm.

The fire started in 907 and flames extended to 905, a similar wood-frame dwelling separated by a small alleyway. Aggressive firefighting operations commenced, as was evident by the debris covered firefighter's gear and their soot covered faces. Hard to get, concealed flames had to be reached with saws and hooks, including from the outside on the peaked roof. The original fire building was unoccupied and the structure at 905 was under renovations.

Many homes along this area of Columbia Avenue, built on the cliffs of the Palisades, are of an unusual construction. From the “A” side, the fire buildings appear to be one-and-a-half story wood-frame dwellings. Built on the cliffs, there is another story below Columbia Avenue. Deputy Chief Charles Thomas ordered ground ladders to be set up in the rear for a precautionary means of egress.

Devastating House Fire Strikes Stanhope

Stanhope, NJ - On April 6th, a devastating house fire broke out around 3:00 A.M., reducing a Stanhope residence to rubble. Crews battled the blaze for hours, hosing down debris as an excavator from Salmon Brothers Inc. combed through the aftermath. Overhaul was completed around 8:00 A.M. Mutual aid departments who responded included Netcong FD, Byram FD, Hopatcong FD, Budd Lake FD and Picatinny FD.

Devin Nunes (RCA) with the 2018 NAEMT EMS Legislator of the Year Award on April 11th during EMS On The Hill Day, the largest national advocacy event for emergency medical services (EMS) professionals.

This prestigious award recognizes a member of Congress who demonstrates an outstanding commitment to, and support of, high quality prehospital and emergency medical care, as well as the EMS professionals who dutifully serve our nation’s patients.

1st Responder Newspaper honors and remembers emergency responders lost in the line of duty

Tennessee: Jason Dickey, 38 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: February 12, 2018 Death Date: February 12, 2018 Fire Department: Lawrenceburg Fire Department Initial Summary: Firefighter Jason Dickey died from injuries sustained in a structural collapse while operating at the scene of a residential structure fire.

Two other firefighters were injured in the collapse and taken to the hospital. The fire started in a twostory residence along Lakeview Drive at around 1630hrs. According to media reports, crews transmitted a “Mayday Emergency” near 2000hrs when the three firefighters became trapped as the result of a collapse. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by authorities.

Rhode Island: Richard Jenks, 72 Rank: Lieutenant Incident Date: February 14, 2018 Death Date: February 14, 2018 Fire Department: Pascoag Fire Department Initial Summary: Lieutenant Richard Jenks collapsed while fighting a residential chimney fire.

Other responders performed CPR on Lieutenant Jenks and transported him to Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket, RI, where he was pronounced deceased. The nature and cause of fatal injury are still to be determined.

Georgia: Earnest McDuffie, 51 Rank: Captain Incident Date: February 20, 2018 Death Date: February 20, 2018 Fire Department: Hinesville Fire Department Initial Summary: While performing fire department mandated physical fitness training, Captain Earnest McDuffie was running at a local park and fell unconscious. CPR was rendered immediately and Captain McDuffie was transported to Liberty

Regional Medical Center where he passed away from a nature and cause of fatal injury still to be determined.

Maryland: Christopher Pryor, 46 Rank: Assistant Fire Chief Incident Date: February 25, 2018 Death Date: February 25, 2018 Fire Department: LaVale Volunteer Fire Department Initial Summary: After returning home from an early morning response for a motor vehicle crash, Assistant Fire Chief Christopher Pryor complained to his wife that he was not feeling well. According to reports from FirefighterCloseCalls.com, Chief Pryor's wife then took him to the emergency room where, upon arrival, he collapsed. Despite all efforts to revive him, Assistant Fire Chief Pryor passed away from a nature and cause of fatal injury still to be reported.

Vermont: Casey Stephen Kuhns, 30 Rank: Lieutenant Incident Date: February 27, 2018 Death Date: February 28, 2018 Fire Department: Morrisville Fire Department Initial Summary: On February 27, at 1526hrs, Lieutenant Casey Stephen Kuhns responded to a motor vehicle crash. Later that day, Lieutenant Kuhns participated in fire department training that ended at approximately 2130hrs. At 0600hrs on February 28, Lieutenant Kuhns was found deceased at home from a nature and cause of fatal injury still to be reported.

North Hudson Mourns the Loss of Popular Captain UPS & DOWNS Notes from Ron Jeffers

He was a mild mannered gentleman, usually with a smile on his face. Retired North Hudson Fire Captain Tom “Irv” Irving lost his battle with cancer in March. After 30-years of service to North Bergen and North Hudson, he continued his fire service duties as North Bergen Fire Official.

For Tommy, the job was about helping people as well as putting out fires. For example, he helped create the juvenile watch program, where children who had been playing with fire were helped.

Living in North Bergen for over 50-years, he attended Robert Fulton School near Engine Co. 4's firehouse, on Hudson Avenue.

“You'd always see the guys going out and coming down the block and they had the old rigs where they hung on the back of the engines,” he said in a 2009 interview. That was after his retirement from the North Hudson Regional Fire Department, which was organized in 1999.

The first night he was on duty as a township firefighter, he remembered responding to a 2-alarm fire on Cottage and 75th Streets. A resident was pleading with firefighters to save his pet. One firefighter found a boa constrictor and brought it out to safety.

“So on the first night I knew that I was in love with the job just because it was exciting and helping people all the time,” he said.

His first permanent assignment was Engine 4, the house that he walked past as a child. He worked there for eight years and said that it was a great feeling to be the firefighter now opening the house door every morning to connect with the children walking to school.

Irving was later transferred to Truck Co. 2, on 43rd Street. Part of the truck's duties included vehicle extrication. He said it was gruesome to talk about, but that his main goal was always to get the victim quickly to medical attention.

After the regional department was formed, Irving was promoted to captain. He spent three years working in headquarters and helped organize the regional department's fire safety program. Irving said that after performing skits in front of hundreds of children, one of the best responses he ever received was when a little girl raised her hand and said, “You're nice".

When a spot opened at Squad Co. 7, he took the position at the waterfront firehouse. A year later, he was assigned as a tour safety officer.

After he retired from the regional department, he continued to serve as North Bergen's Fire Code Official, as he had done since 2001.

When he retired from that position, he and his wife, Armine, moved to

California. Armine was a music teacher at Franklin School and a professional opera singer.

His passing deeply hurt those who knew and worked with him.

During his 2009 interview, Captain Irving said that he hoped that in his years of service, he helped form an impression on some of the new firefighters, just as former members of the department helped shape him.

He did.

UPS: As part of the 2018 budget, Jersey City plans to build a new firehouse in the Grand Street area for Engine 10 and Ladder 12. The current Halladay Street house was built in 1880 and is closed due to poor structural conditions.

DOWNS: A 62-year-old man was killed and his 90-year-old father was rescued by unidentified good Samaritans from a Camden dwelling, March 23rd.

UPS: New firefighters in Union are Christian Trejo, Jake Fernandez, David Abreu, Joseph Mate Jr. and Joseph Giambusso.

DOWNS: Atlantic City Firefighter Frank Walsh was recovering at home after receiving first and second degree burns while operating at a fire in a vacant N. Indiana Ave. building, March 26th, after a flashover. Walsh was on the primary attack line with the nozzle.

UPS: Brendan Corcoran has been promoted to fire captain in Ridgewood. New lieutenants are Joseph Ferraro, Jason Kane and Vincent Krug.

DOWNS: Firefighters in Brick evacuated 130 residents of the George Conway Towers and brought them to another apartment building, as they fought a fire that involved a unit on the 4th floor.

UPS: Peter DeFazio, who was the first person to serve as fire chief for three terms in Red Bank, was honored for his service at a February borough council meeting.

DOWNS: An elderly man suffered burns over ten percent of his body during a one-alarm fire on Pacific Ave., Jersey City, March 30th.

City firefighters rescued the man and a pet dog.

UPS: On March 16th, James P. Smith was officially sworn-in as fire chief in Ocean City.

DOWNS: Eleven people safely fled from a 3-alarm fire that involved three dwellings on South 9th St., Newark, March 27th.

UPS: In April, the Union Township Fire Department was awarded grant assistance from the FM Global Fire Prevention Grant Program. The funds will be used for education, training and community outreach initiatives in the township.

DOWNS: Shots were fired just outside of Elizabeth Fire Headquarters, on Irvington Ave., April 9th.

Police found a bay door was struck by at least 5 or 6 bullets while at least two additional bullets struck a fire truck and a vehicle, according to reports. No firefighters were injured, police said. A male victim was on the street when he was allegedly approached by an armed man. As the victim fled, the suspect fired at him. The victim's pants leg was grazed, but he was not

wounded, police added. The suspect fled.

UPS: Westmont Fire Company 1 is now outfitted with three sets of pet oxygen masks. They were donated by pet services provider Canine Company, at the request of Kathy Bennett, Vice President of the Auxiliary.

DOWNS: A father and son managed to escape a fire that involved their Stanhope house on Musconetcong Ave., April 9th. Fire Chief Alan Bookspan said the basement contained multiple 55-gallon drums of fuel along with ammunition and gunpowder that accelerated the fire.

UPS: Belleville recently held a ceremony renaming Wilson Place as Patrick F. Dunn Way. Dunn was a local firefighter who died of 9/11 related cancer in 2005. This is the street that Dunn grew up on and his father, Pat, a retired Belleville firefighter, continues to reside there.

Dunn served as president of FMBA Local 29 for many years.

DOWNS: A West Cape May house that serves as the office and living quarters for the Jersey Shore Theater Company received extensive damage in an April 4th fire that ripped through the 1840's structure.

UPS: Robert Migliore has been appointed as a firefighter in Jackson.

DOWNS: A stretch of East State Street in Trenton was shut down and scores of people evacuated, April 10th, after a vehicle went through the window of an empty suite of a downtown office building, authorities said. State police closed off the intersection near City Hall after a woman crashed her vehicle into the suite and it caught fire, setting off the building's sprinkler system, said Battalion Chief Todd Willever. The driver was taken to Capital Health Regional M.C., suffering from nonlife-threatening injuries.

DOWNS: A Boonton firefighter was stuck on the roof of a burning Union Street dwelling on April 11th.

He was rescued by a RIC unit from Parsippany's Lake Hiawatha District 4. “They did a great job,” Boonton Fire Chief Ed Robillard said. “They cut a hole in the roof, pulled him through, pulled him down three stories and out.” The firefighter was evaluated at a local hospital for severe fatigue.

UPS: South Jersey Gas recently presented the Collings Lake Fire Department with a $3,000 grant as part of the company's First Responder Grant Program. The funds will be used to support the purchase of new rescue equipment.

DOWNS: A woman was airlifted

to St. Barnabas M.C. in Livingston, April 12th, after a dwelling fire on Old Silverton Rd. in Brick, police said.

UPS: Hoboken firefighters will undergo training to better respond to emergency situations involving city residents living on the Autism Spectrum.

DOWNS: Several young girls leaped from the balcony of an Edgewater building to escape roaring flames that raced through their dance studio and other businesses, on Old River Rd., April 9th. None of the girls were seriously hurt, though 10 to 15 suffered minor injuries.

Several people used a ground ladder to assist the girls. Another victim reportedly slid down a beam from the balcony.

Silverton Ladder Assists EMS with Injury on Roof

Toms River, NJ - On March 25th, Silverton Assistant Chief #2910 Kevin Geoghegan, along with Critical Infastrucure Officer #2999 Chris Inglis with Ladder 2905 and Rescue 2917, assisted Silverton EMS with a worker that was injured on the roof of a building at Ocean County College. The only access to the area where the worker was located was a roof scuttle with a built in ladder. Due to the injuries, this could not be used so fire company members worked side by side with Silverton EMS 368, Ocean County College Security, Toms River CSO Med 22, and Toms River Police Department to safely remove the victim off the roof. The patient was then brought to an awaiting ambulance and transported to the hospital.

Passaic Fourth-Alarm Guts Building Passaic, NJ - A gas-fed fire that originated in the basement of a building containing a deli with apartments above, spread throughout and took hours to control on April 18th.

Firefighters were dispatched to JUMP TO FILE# 234 Main Avenue at 041818105 about 5:30 A.M. A heavy smoke condition was issuing from the structure, but no fire was showing. Two residents were removed as searches were performed. A second-alarm was transmitted followed shortly by a third as members searched, but could not locate the seat of the fire. As the smoke condition intensified and it became apparent that the fire was traveling through the walls from the basement, all firefighters were withdrawn.

Walls were opened up from the outside and exposed visible flames in the “B/C” corner of the structure. That was quickly knocked down, but the smoke continued to intensify from the upper floors and from the vent hole in the roof. Over an hour into the fire, flames vented out of second-floor windows on the “D” side and through the vent hole. A fourth-alarm was called for as water issues began to become apparent. Three elevated master streams were intermittently operated to knock down the heavy fire. The rear portion of the roof collapsed in. PSE&G arrived and shut the gas off at the street.

Hours later, smoke continued to rise from the building. Several firefighters suffered minor cuts

and burns. No civilians were reported injured. Approximately 100 firefighters from multiple Passaic and Bergen County departments assisted at the scene and provided

station coverage. The cause is under investigation.

Dream Comes True for Father & Son Firefighters in N.J. My name is Mike Nittoli, and all my life I wanted to be a firefighter. My father, Angelo Nittoli, who I consider "my hero", was a firefighter and exchief with the Green Knoll Volunteer Fire Company in Bridgewater, New JUMP TO FILE # Jersey. As a kid, I 042018108 can vividly remember going to the firehouse and being around the trucks, and it was something I looked forward to every day.

Being able to play on the trucks back in the late 1980's was every kid's dream. Back in those days, Mack, Hahn and American LaFrance rigs were the the only ones around; everyone had one of the three in the area. Taking pride in your apparatus in those days was something everyone looked forward to doing and wanted to be a part of.

Green Knoll Fire Company had three Macks back then. One of them I considered a favorite was a 1977 Mack CF600 50' Tele-Squirt.

I was hooked at first sight. I always wanted to be around the Macks. So when I turned 16-yearsold in 1998, I joined the Raritan Borough Fire Department as the department's first junior firefighter. Raritan, along with many other departments in the area, had two Mack trucks: a 1979 Mack CF600 Tower Ladder and a 1983 Mack MC Engine. Again, being able to be around Macks made the firefighting experience for me extra special.

Raritan opened many doors for me as I came through the ranks in the fire service. In 2002, I became a full member once I turned 18years-old, and years later I achieved the rank of Lieutenant. I currently belong to Manville Fire Company #1, and my father be-

longs to the Herbertsville Fire Department in Brick Twp., NJ. Throughout my younger years, and even more so recently, me and my father have talked many times about owning a Mack fire truck.

Every time we would attend a show or parade and see a private collector, we would later talk about how cool it would be to own one for ourselves. So about four years ago, I thought I would search for previously owned Macks by Green Knoll Fire Company.

I belonged to the Mack Fire Apparatus Facebook group and posted there that I was looking for some help. I posted some older pictures and asked if anyone knew of their current whereabouts. Lo and behold, someone reached out and I was able to find two of them!

One was the 1972 Mack Engine, which was in Harrisburg, PA, and owned by a private collector. The other was my childhood favorite, the 1977 Mack Tele-Squirt. It was owned and operated by the Franklin Borough Vol. Fire Department, which is located in Cambria County, just outside of Pittsburgh, PA. I contacted the Franklin Fire Department and spoke to their chief, Mr. Jeff Weir. Jeff informed me that the truck definitely came from Green Knoll Fire Company because it still had their name custom built into the steering wheel of the truck. I asked if they would be willing to sell the truck and he informed me that they couldn't sell it since it was still in service. About two years went by and then I received a phone call from Jeff. Jeff advised me that they had received a new ladder truck, and they were putting our Mack up for sale.

I thought "this is it, now is our chance". I spoke to my father and we agreed on a number that we were going to offer. I contacted Jeff, told him what our intentions were, and he advised that he would

bring the info back to the membership for a vote. Well, about a week's time had passed, and then I received some unfortunate news.

My father had gotten laid off from his job, so we were unable to commit to our original offer for the Mack.

I informed Jeff, who gave us his sympathy and told us that he would let us know who would be buying the truck so that we could stay in touch with it. Approximately two months passed before Jeff called to inform me that they had only gotten one offer for the Mack, and that they wanted to give us a second chance at making an offer. I took it upon myself without speaking to my father to make them an offer, using my own funds.

I thought to myself, if this truck was meant to come home, whatever would be will be. On October 1, 2017, I made the Franklin Borough Fire Department a formal offer.

On October 3, 2017, I received a call from Jeff. He informed me that the department had accepted my bid offer and that the truck was mine. He told me that the membership was happy that the truck would be returning to it's original home. Talk about a dream come true! I called my father and we had an emotional moment over the phone. We drove out to pick the truck up on December 2, 2017.

I can't thank the Franklin Borough Fire Department enough. We decided that we would leave Franklin's lettering on the truck as a constant reminder of their sincere generosity.

I wanted to share this story with the Fire Service because miracles do happen. If you have an interest in apparatus collecting, don't wait, you too can do this just like we did.

First responders work to extricate the driver of a car that crashed into a tree off of Pittstown Rd. in Franklin Twp. on April 20th. It took about 45 minutes to extricate the driver.

Driver Trapped After Crashing Into Tree in Franklin Twp. Passaic's new Engine 1, a 2017 Spartan, was broken in on April 18th when it pumped at a 4th-alarm fire in the city.

Franklin Twp., NJ - At 10:35 P.M. on April 20th, the Hunterdon County Communications Center dispatched first responders to a single-vehicle crash at the intersection of Pittstown Road and Sidney Road.

Reports indicated that the car had crashed into a tree or pole and was on fire.

Police officers from Franklin Township and Clinton were the first to arrive on the scene and knocked the fire down with dry chemical extinguishers. The driver was heavily entrapped in the vehicle.

The car involved, a Subaru BRZ, was apparently traveling north on Sidney Road just prior to the crash. The car crashed through a utility pole on Sidney Road, then continued on, crossing over

JUMP TO FILE #042318106 Pittstown Road and crashing into a tree off the north side of Pittstown Road.

It took rescue workers about 45 minutes to extricate the driver from the car. Once he was extricated, the driver was transported by Clinton Rescue Squad and Paramedics to the New Jersey State Police NorthStar medivac helicopter, which had landed behind the South Ridge Community Church. The church is located on Pittstown Road about 3/10 of a mile from the crash scene.

Clinton Fire Department had set up the landing zone for the helicopter.

Once loaded onto the helicopter,

NorthStar flew the patient to Morristown Medical Center.

As a result of the crash, Pittstown Road and Sidney Road were closed in both directions.

Pittstown Road was eventually opened back up at 12:25 A.M., while Sidney Road remained closed until later that morning after the phone company replaced the pole.

Responding to the crash were the Franklin Twp. PD (Patrol 91), Clinton PD (Patrol 45), Quakertown FD (Station 91), Clinton Rescue Squad (Rescue 45), Clinton FD (Station 45), and paramedics from Hunterdon Medical Center (EMS1).

Franklin Township Police are handling the investigation.

Quick Work at Hasbrouck Heights House Fire

Heights House, NJ - At 4:02 A.M. on the morning of April 10th, the Hasbrouck Heights FD was dispatched to a residence at 139 Roosevelt Avenue for a reported smoke condition. Upon arrival, Assistant Chief Knobloch found a working fire on the first-floor, extending to the second-floor.

Companies quickly knocked down the fire, and no injuries were reported to the members or residents. Mutual aid from Wallington, Wood Ridge and Moonachie assisted on the scene while companies from South Hackensack and Little Ferry FD covered the boro.

A 100th Birthday Surprise in Point Pleasant

Point Pleasant, NJ - When Ex-Chief William Stevenson met an elderly gentleman who was out with his aide, little did he realize the treat he was about to bestow on this octogenarian.

In speaking to the man, later identified JUMP TO FILE# as Sonny DeFillipo 042018110 who would shortly turn 100 years of age, Bill learned that Sonny had been a member of the Point Pleasant Fire Department back in the early 50's, before Companies 1 and 2 merged to become Station 75 in January of 2011.

Sonny still proudly wore his Company 1 jacket when the weather permitted. When asked what he would really like as a present on his 100th, Sonny replied that he would love a ride on one of the gleaming trucks of Station 75.

When Ex-Chief Stevenson next met with his fellow firefighters at Station 75, he suggested that perhaps the company could send a truck to Sonny's upcoming 100th birthday party. President David Thergesen and Chief Rob Hoffman readily agreed.

And so it was that, at 7:30 P.M. on Thursday, April 12th, three pumpers, a rescue truck and a chief's gig, with 15 Station 75 members aboard, pulled up to the front of Sonny's home, lights, sirens and horns blaring. When Sonny realized that it was his buddies from the Point Pleasant Fire Department that came to celebrate, he was rendered absolutely speechless.

With the assistance of family members, Sonny slowly made his way to the front curb where the assembled apparatus awaited.

his choice. He selects Pumper 7511, driven by his new buddy, Bill Stevenson. He is assisted up into the crew cab by strong willing hands, and then they're off on a ride that he never willingly will forget. Once again, lights, sirens and horns announce to the neighborhood that Sonny is on his way.

When the ride concludes, the more than a dozen members of Station 75 are invited inside

Sonny's home for a piece of his birthday cake. While there, all assembled sing a rousing chorus of "Happy Birthday" as Sonny cuts his cake. His birthday wish has been granted and carried out with dignity and compassion by Station 75 members, who gladly gave up their time to help this gentleman celebrate the big 100.

It is the memoirs of a Detroit firefighter who retired as a battalion chief in June of 2010 after 38 years of service. These are his stories to the best of his recollection. In a nutshell, I must recommend to the reader that this is a must read book!

It has 44 chapters and an epilogue. All but one of the chapters are untitled, but by reading them you get a pretty good idea about the city of Detroit and its fire department. In short, you will easily become overwhelmed by the heroic and the horrific! These are stories one cannot make up!

The author was born and raised in the city and has always had a love for it. The disaster that it has become and has been for many years is one that people who love the city hold out that someday it will return to the beautiful, prosperous town it once was. Remember, it was the automobile capital at one time, and one of the richest, if not the richest city in the country.

The author will enlighten you about the nightmares of arson, legitimate fires, accidents and crime that plague it. Even though the chapters are not titled, the reader is in for an interesting voyage through them. He also mixes in non-emergency activities that the DFD involved themselves in with sports, education and entertainment. Almost all of the fires in Detroit are arson.

It took most of the book to get through before I discovered that he eventually achieved the rank of battalion chief. To say the least, he is a humble man! He is also critical of the administration and freely admits to breaking the rules at times, but nevertheless, he tells his stories in an honest way. The chapters are not long and there is a 15 page section of black and white photos.

As I stated in the beginning of my review, this is a book I recommend buying to learn about Detroit, its fire department and the horror and heroics of fighting fires and saving lives in it.

Paterson Engine 7 Responds to Gas Station Fire Paterson, NJ - A radio alarm from a fire chief who spotted a gas pump on fire on April 6th allowed for a quick response from nearby headquarters on McBride Avenue. Paterson Engine Co. 7 was first-due and extinguished the blaze from a damaged gas pump at Nagle Street and McBride Avenue.

Fire Tears Through Lodi Condo Complex Lodi, NJ - Flames tore through a Lodi condominium complex on the evening of April 21st. At 7:02 P.M., the Lodi and Garfield Fire Departments were dispatched to 586 Harrison Avenue for a reported JUMP TO FILE# condo Fire. At that 042318140 time, Garfield, Lodi and even the Saddle Brook Police Department were getting calls reporting the fire. Because the complex borders both towns, both departments dispatched general alarms.

Before the arrival of any fire personnel, a former Garfield firefighter who was passing by alerted residents in the building to evacuate due to the fire. First arriving Assistant Chief Cannici confirmed a working fire, along with Garfield Chief Semanick.

First-due Lodi Engine 615, with Capt. L. Ruffel, Firefighters L. Ruffel Jr., M. Ruffel, J. Milioto, Ex-Chief K. Bruining, and Fire Co.1 Firefighter G. Alberts, immediately stretched a one-and-ahalf inch hose line to the third-floor to make an aggressive interior attack.

First-due Garfield Co. Engine 1 went to the rear of the building with hand lines. As additional companies arrived, the fire quickly extended through the second-floor, top floor and cockloft.

Crews had to evacuate the building due to heavy fire conditions, which eventually vented through the roof. Master streams from Lodi Ladder 613 and Garfield Truck 4 went into operation along with several outside hand lines to knock down the heavy fire, which collapsed the roof. The fire was contained to the middle part of the building, not going past the fire walls.

One firefighter suffered a

minor injury after his foot went through the floor. He required treatment but is okay. Mutual aid from Saddle Brook, Wallington, Rochelle Park and Wood Ridge assisted on the scene, while units from East Rutherford, Elmwood Park, Hasbrouck Heights, Fair Lawn, Paramus and Maywood provided coverage in both Lodi

and Garfield firehouses.

The fire was placed under control within an hour by Assistant Chief Cannici, and is under investigation by the Lodi Fire Prevention Bureau. Thank you to the Lodi FD for their assistance with this article.

Early Morning Blaze in Paterson Goes to Three Alarms Paterson, NJ - Paterson firefighters battled a three-alarm blaze early Saturday morning, April 21st, that would start a busy 24 hours for the Paterson Fire Department.

Around 4:40 A.M., firefighters were dispatched to 42 Hopper Ave. for a reported structure fire. Paterson Battalion arrived on scene to find a two-and-ahalf story frame with heavy fire JUMP TO FILE# showing from the 042318147 second-floor and extending to the "Delta" exposure. A second-alarm was transmitted as firefighters arrived and stretched two lines, one into the main fire building and one into the exposure.

Heavy fire extended into the attic and consumed the upper floors. Command ordered the evacuation of the building and transmitted the third-alarm. Multiple handlines knocked the heavy fire down and firefighters extinguished the fire in the "Delta" exposure. It took under one hour to knock the fire down before crews could reenter the building and knock down any remaining fire. No injuries were reported and the fire remains under investigation.

Bicyclist Not Wearing Helmet Flown to Trauma Center After Falling in Pohatcong Twp. Pohatcong Twp., NJ – On April 22nd at 5:42 P.M., Fire and EMS were dispatched by the Warren County Communications Center to a report of a possible unconscious person and a motorcycle down on Liberty Blvd., at the intersection with Liggett Blvd., in the township. Township police arrived on scene to find an adult male laying in the roadway, going in and out of consciousness.

The man had been riding a motorized bicycle, which is a regular bicycle with a small gas motor installed on it and connected to the back wheel by a chain to power it. The bike still has the pedals, so you can also pedal it like a regular bicycle. The bike rider apparently crashed into the curb on the edge of the road and was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident.

Due to the seriousness of the injuries, he was transported from the scene by Phillipsburg Rescue

JUMP TO FILE #042318132 Squad paramedics to a landing zone set up at the Lock St. ball field by the Huntington Vol. Fire Co., located a little under a half of a mile from the scene. Once there, he was transferred to the New Jersey State Police NorthStar medavac helicopter and flown to St. Luke’s University Hospital in Fountain Hill, PA. Responding to the incident were the Pohatcong Twp. Police (Patrol 75), Lopatcong Twp. Police (Patrol 74), Phillipsburg Rescue Squad (Rescue 94), Huntington Vol. Fire Co. (Station 75), and paramedics from Hunterdon Medical Center (EMS 4).

The Pohatcong Twp. police are handling the investigation.

Firefighters Save Easter in Englewood

Englewood, NJ - Quick work by Englewood and mutual aid companies kept a basement fire from extending and causing serious damage to a home on Easter Sunday. EFD companies were sent to 162 Crescent Ct. shortly after 12:30 P.M. for a reported fire. Smoke was showing from the split-level home on arrival. A second-alarm was transmitted as two lines were stretched through the garage door to the basement. The flames were quickly knocked down.

Members checked for extension and found none. The fire was placed under control in less than one hour, with damage confined to part of the basement. No serious injuries were reported, and the fire was determined to be accidental. Teaneck, Tenafly and Hackensack assisted at the scene.

Originally used by their Fire Police, it was later used on swimming pool filling details for fund raising. It was stocked with hose and the firefighters would use it to hook up to a hydrant and stretch to the pool.

Firefighters Battle Stubborn Second-Alarm in Irvington Irvington, NJ - Firefighters chased flames on April 2nd throughout a large, two-story, mixed-occupancy building during a stubborn two-alarm fire on Lyons Avenue. Firefighters were dispatched to the area of Lyons Ave. and Lincoln Pl. for a reported structure fire.

Within minutes, Irvington's Deputy Chief arrived with JUMP TO FILE# smoke in the area 040318100 and transmitted the working fire. Heavy smoke filled the building as crews made entry into the main fire store. The fire traveled the walls into the second-floor and the vacant store on the "Bravo" side. A second-alarm was transmitted, bringing 2 and 1 from Newark directly to the scene.

Firefighters stretched six lines into both floors, opening walls and ceilings, and knocking down fire. Additional mutual aid from Orange and West Orange were called into the scene to assist with chasing pockets of fire. It took firefighters just under two hours to bring the fire under control. No injuries were reported and the fire remains under investigation.

Mass Casualty Transit Drill Held in North Bergen North Bergen, NJ - Emergency crews teamed up on the morning of March 24th to participate in a train derailment drill near the Tonnelle Avenue Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Station. The drill was set up by NJ Transit using passenger cars and JUMP TO FILE# a container that rep- 040318101 resented a rolled over rail car, containing “victims".

The New Jersey Transit Police Department's Office of Emergency Management, together with federal, state, county and local partners, assembled for the training exercise.

Participating in the exercise included the NJ Transit, North Bergen and CSX police, North Bergen and Hudson County Office of Emergency Management and North Hudson Regional Fire & Rescue. Emergency medical crews came from North Bergen, West New York, Hoboken and McCabe Ambulance. Representatives from the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force were also present.

Emergency crews entered the passenger cars to aid the injured and removed them to a triage area. Volunteers were used as “victims” in the light rail cars with various listed injuries. The simulated rolled over passenger car had to first be stabilized by firefighters and NJ Transit police emergency crews before it could be entered for search and rescue operations. Manikins were used for victims in this part of the exercise.

Firefighters also searched the area around the rail cars for possible victims, as well as a search by a NJ Transit K-9 unit.

NJ Transit is the nation's largest statewide public transportation system, providing more than 944,000 weekday trips on 252 bus routes, three light rail lines, 12 commuter rail lines and through Access Link para-transit service. It is the third largest transit system in the country, with 165 rail stations, 62 light rail stations and more than 19,000 bus stops linking major points in New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia.

NJ Transit police regularly conducts drills and training sessions simulating various transportation scenarios throughout the statewide system.

Crews assembled on the grounds of the three-hour drill at its completion for a review of the operations and what was learned.

Overall, it was considered a successful operation.

Four-Alarm Fire in Jersey City Leaves Dozens Homeless Jersey City, NJ - About 40 residents, mostly children, were left homeless after flames tore through two multi-story dwellings in Jersey City in April 23rd. Moments after midnight, FDJC units were dispatched to the area of Bergen and Bramhall Avenues for the report of a fire.

On arrival, heavy fire was visible in the rear of 444 Bergen Ave., and had extended to the “B” exposure and was threatening the “D” exposure. A second-alarm was transmitted by the first-due unit, fol-

After confirming that all residents were out, and with conditions deteriorating, members were withdrawn for a defensive attack. Heavy fire vented out of the second-floor windows before being driven back by multiple lines. This continued for several hours, with fire showing then being knocked down.

Members eventually re-entered

to hit hot spots and to rescue several dogs from the water filled basement, as well as a cat from the exposure “B” market. Another cat that had been clinging to a small ledge for an extended time was also rescued via a ground ladder and returned to its owners.

No injuries were reported to residents. Two firefighters reported minor injuries. The cause is under investigation.

Firefighters Quickly Knock Three-Alarm Fire at Apartment Building in Flemington

Flemington, NJ - Firefighters from several Hunterdon County communities responded to a threealarm fire at Hunter Hills apartment complex in the borough on April 8th. The fire was called in as a report of smoke in a secondfloor apartment at about 10:10 A.M. Flemington Police were first to arrive on the scene and started to evacuate the building. There are four apartments in the affected part of the building, two on the second-floor and two on the firstfloor. Additionally, there are garages underneath the apartments, accessed from the rear of the building.

The call was initially dispatched as a Level Three Alarm in the county’s call matrix, but the fire chief elevated the fire to a first-alarm shortly after his arrival on the scene. He requested a second-alarm form the county communications center when operations reported that there was fire inside the wall.

The call was then upgraded to a third-alarm, with the fire chief requesting an engine and an aerial only from that alarm response.

Numerous ground ladders were put to use around the building, along with several hand-lines.

JUMP TO FILE #042318103 control a little after 11:00 A.M. All fire department units cleared the scene by 12:00 noon, turning it over to the police, fire marshal and prosecutor’s office.

FD (Station 21), Quakertown FD (Station 91), Clinton FD RIC Team (Station 45), Three Bridges FD (Station 33), High Bridge FD (Station 14), Hunterdon County Fire and EMS Coordinators (Station 86), Flemington-Raritan Rescue Squad (Rescue 49), Clinton Rescue Squad REHAB (Rescue 45), Lambertville Rescue Squad (Rescue 17), Hunterdon County Prosecutor's Office (Patrol 89), Flemington Fire Marshal (Station 49), and Flemington OEM (Station 49).

The following agencies were called up for cover assignments for the companies at the fire scene: Lambertville Rescue Squad (Rescue 17), High Bridge FD (Station 14), West Amwell Fire Co. (Station 26), Whitehouse Fire Co. (Station 22), Three Bridges Fire Co. (Station 33), and Milford FD (Station 92).

In Monmouth County, the Wanamassa Fire Company in Ocean Township recently placed in service a new Utility 37-2-87. It is a 2017 Ford F-550 XL Super Duty 4x4 chassis with a 13-foot EVI walk-around body. It replaces an old Ford/Braun converted ambulance.

The new truck carries a 10-foot Achilles inflatable boat and

has a 12,000-pound crane davit, which can raise and lower their larger boat. The crane is not shown, but is carried disassembled in a storage box at the forward part of the body’s roof.

Other features and equipment include an on-board Power Tech 7.8-kw diesel generator, a front mounted six-on Warn winch and a rear receiver for

their rescue truck’s larger winch, rear access ladder and roll-up compartment doors on the body, side scene lights and four telescoping floodlights, a Honda two-kw portable gen light, an electric cord reel, Johnson 15-hp outboard motor, life preservers, inflatable rescue hose and a Stokes litter. The unit responds to water rescues, hazmats and dewatering calls.

Firefighter Injured at Bogota House Fire Bogota, NJ - Bogota firefighters along with mutual aid fought a house fire on the morning of April 21st. At 9:53 A.M., companies were dispatched to 60 Queen Ann Road for a reported basement fire.

Upon their arrival, police units confirmed a basement fire. Arriving chiefs quickly struck a second-alarm, bringing out-of-town units to the scene.

Companies stretched lines to the basement to get to the seat of the fire. A firefighter injury was reported during the early stages of the operation. The firefighter was removed by members and treated on scene before being transported to the hospital.

Bogota and Hackensack ladder companies were sent to the roof to vent. At that time, the

JUMP TO FILE #042218103 smoke began to pick up and fire was reported to have extended to the first-floor. An additional hand line was stretched inside to the first-floor to knock down the fire.

Companies made very good progress and had all visible fire knocked down in short time. Mutual aid from Hackensack, Ridgefield Park and Teaneck assisted on scene. Teaneck Box 54 assisted with firefighter rehab and Ridgefield Park Rescue assisted in filling air bottles. Also responding was EMS from Holy Name Medical Center.

First Responders Recognized for CPR Save in Blairstown Blairstown, NJ - On Thursday, February 22, 2018, the Blairstown Ambulance Corps. was dispatched to a home in their township for a report of a cardiac emergency. Upon arrival at the scene, the Blairstown Squad found Blairstown PD doing CPR. Two shocks had been delivered. Blairstown Squad members assisted PD in rescue breathing for the patient. Knowlton Rescue and Blairstown Hose Co. #1 assisted with equipment and manpower.

CPR was continued on scene with PD and an additional five shocks were delivered before ROSC (Return of Spontaneous Circulation) was achieved. This activity lasted 16 minutes. The patient

JUMP TO FILE #041718112 was then loaded into an ambulance and transport was started. While enroute to the hospital, the Blairstown Squad met up with paramedics from St. Clare's (Medic 55). The patient was still maintaining a pulse and transport was continued to the hospital, where patient care was then transferred to the awaiting cardiac unit. It was truly a team effort.

Quick Knock at Waldwick Two-Alarm Commercial Fire Waldwick, NJ - Waldwick firefighters were called to extinguish a two-alarm fire in a large warehouse that housed several businesses, including a paint shop, on April 10th. Around 4:30 P.M., firefighters were dispatched to 145 Hopper Ave., for heavy smoke showing from a large commercial building.

Upon arrival of Waldwick Chief JUMP TO FILE# Ferrara, a working 041018116 fire was transmitted as heavy smoke pushed from two bay doors and the roof on the "Delta" side of the building. A secondalarm was quickly transmitted as Engine 634 and Tower 641 arrived on scene. A water supply was established and two hand lines were stretched through the bay doors. Wyckoff and Waldwick towers laddered the roof to check for extension.

The fire was knocked down within 15 minutes. Mutual aid from Wyckoff, HoHoKus, Midland Park, Allendale and Saddle River assisted on scene. No injuries were reported. The fire remains under investigation.

Englewood Man Celebrates 57 Years of Volunteer EMS Service Englewood, NJ - Englewood resident Dick Krane doesn’t do anything half way. When he commits to something, he really commits.

Krane recently celebrated 61 years JUMP TO FILE# of marriage with his 040918104 wife, Pat, and come May 2018, will mark 57 years of service with the Englewood Vol. Ambulance Corps (EVAC).

Although no longer an active duty crew member, Krane, 81, remains embedded in the squad’s activities, still serving on several of its committees. In appreciation, EVAC members honored Krane recently for his unshakable dedication to volunteer EMS. “During his tenure with EVAC, Dick has held every elected position except treasurer and has served on just about every committee we have,” said Paula Weiler, also a longtime volunteer and the squad’s current treasurer. “Even now, as an active life member, he hasn’t slowed down a bit.”

Formed in 1954, the not-forprofit EVAC currently has 25 volunteer emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and first responders who provide basic life support services, answering approximately 1,100 calls annually.

EVAC is one of more than 250 EMS agencies throughout the state

that compose the 89-year-old nonprofit New Jersey State First Aid Council, which now does business as the EMS Council of New Jersey (EMSCNJ). The EMSCNJ represents the interests of 20,000 EMS volunteers affiliated with its member agencies.

Over the years, Krane served as the EMSCNJ’s northern area vice president and as a delegate from the organization’s Third District. He joined the convention committee in 1973 and since 1989, has served as chairman of the annual Educational Symposium and Trade Show, a huge undertaking.

“Dick is a career salesman,” explained Weiler, who also serves as the EMSCNJ’s membership secretary. “He has used his considerable talents to garner donations of money, time, ads, giveaways and much more for the convention and the EMSCNJ. He is an incredibly valuable asset not only to our squad, but to EMS throughout New Jersey.”

“Dick has amazing energy,” said EMSCNJ President Joseph G. Walsh, Jr. “Planning for each convention starts as soon as one finishes, and Dick always has ideas to make the next one better, more fun, more engaging.

“He scouts potential convention locations years ahead of time, driving all over the state and meeting with hotel and venue managers to negotiate the best deals for us,” Walsh said. “He lines up terrific entertainment for our banquets and

vendors for our trade show, and still manages to arrange bonuses, such as a mobile ER and a medical flight helicopter for convention attendees to tour.”

Krane says he’s never been one to remain idle, but he never pictured himself this involved in volunteer EMS for so long. “Initially, I was ‘Shanghaied' to join,” Krane joked.

He explained that, at times, as he

made sales calls, businessmen in Englewood who were squad members left their stores to answer calls, and convinced him to join them. “I suppose it grew on me,” he said.

For Krane, community spirit is a family affair: his son, son-in-law and several grandchildren also are EMS volunteers. “They saw how much I loved it, how involved I was and wanted to experience it for them-

selves,” Krane said. “Now they’re hooked, too.”

In appreciation of his decades of service with EVAC and as a U.S. Army veteran (1957-59), Krane was chosen to serve as co-grand marshal of Englewood’s Memorial Day parade in 2011.

Crews Quickly Knock Down Condo Fire in Raritan Twp. Raritan Twp., NJ - Firefighters form several Hunterdon County fire departments made a quick stop of a second-floor fire in condominium located on Sequioa Court in the Town- JUMP TO FILE# ship on April 2nd.

042318101 Companies were dispatched around 4:55 P.M. to the Level Three alarm by the County Communications Center.

One male occupant of the home was transported to Hunterdon Medical Center by the Flemington Raritan Rescue Squad with reports of smoke inhalation.

Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns, III, and Chief of Detectives Frank Crisologo announced that fire investigators were investigating the cause of the fire.

According to Prosecutor Kearns, “The Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office Arson Task Force, Raritan Township Police Department, and the Raritan Township Fire Marshal began investigating the fire Monday evening and the investigation is ongoing."

The fire was contained to a second bedroom, while other portions of the home were damaged by smoke and water. All fire company units cleared the scene by 6:35 P.M., with investigators remaining on location.

Agencies that responded to the fire included the Raritan Twp. Police Department (Patrol 21), Raritan Twp. Fire Department (Station 21), Flemington Fire Department (Station 49), West Amwell Fire Department RIC Team (Station 46), Readington Fire Department (Station 33), Hunterdon County Fire Coordinators (Station 86), FlemingtonRaritan Rescue Squad (Rescue 49), Lambertville Rescue Squad REHAB Unit (Rescue 17), and paramedics from the Hunterdon Medical Center (EMS 3).

Garfield Returns to Grace Avenue for House Fire Garfield, NJ - A fire broke out on the evening of April 23rd just after 10:30 P.M. in a Garfield home under renovation at 510 Grace Avenue. The fire was contained to the attic of the home and quickly extinguished.

Just after 5:00 A.M. the next JUMP TO FILE# morning, compa- 042418116 nies were dispatched back to 510 Grave Ave., on a reported structure fire. Arriving police officers reported smoke in the area and arriving chiefs confirmed a working fire. The home, which was under renovation, had no inside access to the attic which made an interior attack difficult.

Chief Semanick ordered an outside attack for firefighter safety.

Truck 4's ladder pipe went into operation and knocked down the fire in the attic within 30 minutes.

Mutual aid from Elmwood Park, Lodi, Maywood, Rochelle Park and Saddle Brook covered firehouses, while Wallington provided a FAST team on the scene.

The Bergen County Prosecutor's Arson Unit is investigating the blaze. No injuries were reported.

Truck 147, formally Silverton Vol. Fire Department's water rescue and rehab unit 2904, is a 2004 Ford F-550 equipped with a small rescue body, roof

mounted light tower, generator and scene lighting, along with housing various other fire investigation tools, originally built by E-ONE.

Since being placed into service a few weeks ago, 147 has been utilized at three structure fires to conduct origin and cause investigations in Toms River Township, and will be used for public education and fire prevention details throughout the

township as needed.

The Toms River Bureau of Fire Prevention would like to thank the Toms River Board of Fire Commissioners Districts 1 and 2, along with the Silverton Volunteer Fire Department for their continued support to our department and the residents of Toms River.

Paterson Firefighters Make Great Stop

Paterson, NJ - Paterson firefighters made quick work of a house fire on River Road that went to three alarms on Saturday afternoon, April 14th. Around 4:30 P.M., firefighters were dispatched to 468 River Rd. for a reported structure fire. On arrival, heavy fire was showing from the top floor of a threestory frame. A second-alarm was transmitted as fire threatened exposures on both sides. Multiple hand-lines were stretched to the top floor as crews extinguished the fire.

Minor extension to the "Bravo" exposure was reported. A third-alarm was eventually transmitted. It took firefighters 30 minutes to knock down the fire and check for any extension.

No injuries were reported and the fire is under investigation.

Driver Charged with DUI After Crashing Radio Test Through Utility Pole in White Twp. Chaplain's White Twp., NJ - The male driver of a Jeep Wrangler that rolled over after crashing through a utility pole on April 8th on County Road 519 was charged with DUI along with several JUMP TO FILE# other motor vehicle 042318105 charges.

First responders were dispatched to the crash at 9:07 P.M., which occurred about a half a mile south of the State Highway 46 intersection. The Jeep was apparently traveling southbound just prior to the crash.

The driver had self-extricated from the wreck prior to the arrival of emergency workers. He was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital in Pocono, PA, by Belvidere Rescue Squad and the paramedics.

County Road 519 was closed in both directions just after the crash. Once the jeep was removed from the roadway, the northbound lane was opened at about 9:50 P.M., but the southbound lane remained closed due to the pole in the roadway.

Responding to the crash were the New Jersey State Police (Washington Station), Belvidere Fire Department (Station 21), Mt. Lake Fire Company (Station 72), Belvidere Rescue Squad (Rescue 21), and paramedics from Hunterdon Medical Center (EMS 2).

Jersey Central Power & Light responded to repair the pole.

NJ State Police (Washington Station) is handling the investigation.

There are many fire departments that have radio tests at the beginning of a shift or once a day. The purpose of this test is to see how well we hear dispatch, and how well they hear us.

There are many times we pray.

We transmit communications of our concerns to Dispatch, but do we always hear Dispatch answer our transmission? Do we wait to hear the answer, or do we keep on going?

We are used to someone acknowledging our calls, especially when we call a Mayday. When we call a Mayday, it is confirmed and then everything on the fire scene stops and handles that Mayday.

When we pray, we do not usu-

ally hear a verbal response from God. God has other ways that He communicates with us. It may be a direct response by the situation that is answered right away, or there may be a soft answer. We may be so busy that we never pay attention to the response.

Psalm 46:10 tells us to be still and know that He is God. I have to admit that there are times that I want an immediate response, or want to hear from God to make sure that He is working on the problem.

I have learned that I need to trust him. I have to think of it like doing a search in a building. I do not need to be nervous or scared, even though I do not see my partner or hear from Him all the time. I can trust Him. Joshua 1:9 tells us to be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.

Hampton, NJ - Two Hunterdon County fire companies got together on Saturday, April 14th, to have all of the companies’ hoses and ladders tested for their annual certification.

Hampton Fire Department (Station 13) and Glen Gardner Fire Department (Station 12) hauled all of their equipment over to Railroad Ave., where a section was closed off to facilitate the testing.

vided the testing to certify the hoses and ladders. Hoses of all sizes were stretched out on the road and hooked up to a portable pump with a manifold on it to allow over 15 lines to be tested at the same time.

The testing took all day to complete due to the amount of hoses and ladders involved.

Several other area fire companies have or will be testing their equipment this spring.

Paterson Firefighters Battle Three Fires Within 24 Hours Paterson, NJ - Paterson firefighters battled three fires in 24 hours, including two second-alarm jobs within one hour of each other.

Just after midnight on April 21st, while firefighters were taking up from another job, a reported fire came in for the area of Union and Redwood Avenues. Paterson's Battalion quickly arrived and transmitted a working fire at JUMP TO FILE# 440 Union Ave., for 042218102 fire on the first-floor of a two-and-a-half story mixed occupancy.

F i r e fi g h t e r s stretched multiple lines and forced entry into a convenience store on the first-floor, where they were met with heavy fire. A secondalarm was transmitted as fire vented on the "Delta" side, with minor extension to the "Delta" exposure. The main body of fire was knocked down within 20 minutes, however crews had fire running the walls.

All companies continued to work opening up and checking for extension before bringing the fire under control. Hawthorne Engine 3 assisted on scene. No injuries were reported and the fire remains under investigation.

Sunday Morning Two-Alarm Fire Guts Belleville Home Belleville, NJ - The peacefulness of the first Spring-like Sunday of the year was shattered as a two-alarm fire tore through a Belleville home on April 22nd.

The dispatch to 18 Moore Pl. came in at about 11:30 A.M. Heavy smoke and fire was showing from the rear of the small oneand-a-half story frame dwelling as companies arrived. A secondalarm was transmitted, bringing Nutley and Montclair to the scene.

An interior attack was commenced, but as the flames took

The fire was able to be placed under control in about one hour with no injuries reported. Investigators are working to determine the cause.

East Dover Crews Handle Grass Fire at Cattus Island County Park

Toms River Twp., NJ - On the afternoon of April 22nd, Toms River Fire communications received multiple 9-1-1 calls for a brush fire in the area of Cattus Island County Park. East Dover Fire Co. #4 (Station 28) Chief Tim Zieser (#2800) went responding and stated that he had a column of smoke showing from the Mizzen Road area, but that it looked like the fire was in the Bandon Road property where the county park offices are located. Chief Zieser arrived and confirmed a working grass fire along the water line of the Silver Bay. Responding units were Brush 2829 and Brush 2819, as well as NJFFS units B-7, B-33, B-39 and B-32. The fire is under investigation by the New Jersey Forest Fire Service.

Some Rigs From Bergen and Middlesex Counties Absolute Marks 35 Years

This month will feature some vehicles from Bergen and Middlesex Counties. Starting with Bergen County we want to mention Saddle River, which is a department that has undergone some transition. When the Saddle River Valley Rescue Squad ceased to exist, Saddle River (one of the towns which the squad covered), was forced to take up slack for themselves. It resulted in them purchasing a demo Freightliner/EVI rescue truck with a 20-foot non-walk-in body, Will Burt Night scan and a 25-kw generator. Another part of their transition was the purchase of their first aerial device.

This is a Spartan ER quint with a large water tank (650-gallons) and a 103foot ladder. It has a 2000-GPM pump and a 10-kw generator. I do not know if it is run as a first-out unit, but it could certainly qualify. Both trucks were delivered in 2017 and sold by Campbell Supply Co., LLC. The rescue was featured in an earlier column.

As we go up the mountain, we come to Upper Saddle River who placed in service a KME with Predator Severs Service chassis with 1750-GPM pump, 3000-gallon water tank and 6-kw generator, sold by First Priority Emergency Vehicles. I remember a neat GMC tile cab/Tasc pumper they had back in the 60’s. Garfield Co. 3 is next with a 2017 Ferrara Igniter MVP with a 2000-GPM pump, 750-gallon water tank and 10-kw generator, sold by Firefighter 1. The Boro of Wood-Ridge rounds out our Bergen County review with a KME Predator pumper with a 2000-GPM pump and 750-gallon water tank, also sold by First Priority Emergency Vehicles.

Now for the three rigs from Middlesex County. One is from North Brunswick Township’s Fire Company 2 (Maple Meade), and is a 2017 Seagrave Apollo 105-foot rear-mount platform quint. This is the third generation of rear-mount platforms for them. The last one was a 1993 Seagrave 105-foot Apollo and the first one was a 1977 Seagrave/CFA/LTI 85-foot quint that the chief says they bought second hand from the East St. Louis, IL Fire Department. It was white-over-yellow and repainted white-over-red after they took possession. The yellow color indicates it could have been assigned to one of the airports.

CFA (Clintonville Fire Apparatus) was a small company located in the same town as Seagrave. They at times used Seagrave cabs and chassis, but their plate, “CFA”, was usually on the body by the wheel wells. Seagrave had not yet introduced the Apollo when their first platform was placed in service. Campbell Supply Co., LLC sold the 1993 platform and Emergency Equipment Sales & Services sold their newest one. Throughout all of these years, they maintained a 1972 Ford F Sponco aerial with a Cherefko body as a first piece originally, and then a backup. Although now considered their antique, it is still capable of being used.

This third vehicle is operated by Plainsboro and is a Sutphen pumper/tanker, sold by Blaze Emergency Equipment on a Kenworth T-800 chassis. It has a Cummins FXK, 505-hp diesel engine, which is a model I have not heard of, but the paperwork on the vehicle bears it out.

In dealer news in April, Absolute Fire Protection marked their 35th anniversary selling E-ONE fire apparatus.

Also, Defender Emergency Equipment has opened an ambulance sales division and will be the sole source for both Medix and Osage ambulances in the state. (See related article.)

The second is a Seagrave HydroForce 60-foot articulating device delivered to the Westmont Fire Company in Haddon Township (Camden County). It has a Marauder II stainless 141-inch steel cab with Bostrom seating and 37inch cab access compartment doors, 18-inch extended front bumper, a Cummins 500-hp diesel engine, SKF Lubricating System, ROM roll-up doors, Waterous CSU, 2000GPM pump, with stainless steel pump module and pump plumbing, stainless steel body, 500-gallon Tstyle water tank, Harrison 6-kw hydraulic generator and FRC scene lighting. The boom has a 60-foot vertical reach, 1500-GPM water flow, protected internal waterway, 250-foot reach with the master stream, camera and FRC lighting at boom tip, 11-foot six-inch single rear outrigger spread and wireless operations up to 900-feet away. The vehicle has a 198-inch wheelbase and a 10-foot five-inch travel height.

The third is a heavy duty custom pumper to the Iselin Fire Company in Woodbridge Township. It is another Seagrave added to their roster!

VCI Ambulances is now part of our dealer circuit and reports the following: Delivery of a VCI remount of an AEV Type III ambulance onto a 2018 Ford E-350 chassis to MONOC. MONOC (Monmouth Ocean Hospital Service Corporation) provides multiple services throughout our state to over 2.8 million residents on the north, central and southern shores. Other deliveries include three Horton 553 Type III ambulances on Ford E-450 chassis (two to the Voorhees FD in Camden County, and one to the Beach Haven FAS in Ocean County).

Fire & Safety Services reports the following Pierce orders: For the Independent FC in East Brunswick Township (Middlesex County) and Hammonton (Atlantic County), an Enforcer pumper each. Cedar Knolls in Hanover Township (Morris County) ordered a Saber pumper, and Union Township (Union County) ordered an Arrow XT 107foot tandem axle ladder. They delivered an Arrow XT PUC pumper to the Griggstown FC in Franklin Township (Somerset County).

Mahwah FC 5 (Bergen County) received a Sutphen pumper/tanker.

With the fire building in a rear yard behind other homes, access was challenging. Garfield firefighters used a saw to remove a fence to allow easier advancing of a hose-line to the rear door on March 27th.

Flames Contained in Paterson Commercial Building Multi-Vehicle Crash Injures Nine in Knowlton Twp.

Paterson, NJ - Paterson firefighters quickly contained a fire in a large commercial building, adverting a blaze that potentially could have threatened the neighborhood, on April 21st.

Shortly before 10:30 P.M., companies were dispatched to the area of Holsman and Piercy Streets for smoke in the area.

After a search by police and fire units, smoke was found to be issuing from several vents on a large four-story masonry commercial building. Upon entry, heavy smoke was found throughout the interior of the building, and a second-alarm was transmit-

JUMP TO FILE #042318115 ted. Lines were stretched and flames found on the first-floor were quickly knocked down.

Due to the smoke condition, it was difficult to confirm if there was any extension to the upper floors. Numerous doors, vents and other openings were opened to vent the smoke. No extension was found and the fire was placed under control in about one hour, with no injuries reported.

Knowlton Twp., NJ - A few minutes after noon on April 7th, first responders were dispatched to a crash involving four cars on Interstate 80 westbound, at mile post 8.2. The crash shut down all three westbound lanes of the interstate, resulting in traffic backing up for miles.

The crash injured nine people, three of which sustained serious injuries. Two air medical helicopters landed on the highway, airlifting some of the victims to trauma centers.

The third car involved crashed through the chain link boarder fence off the right side of the highway, while the fourth car came to rest sideways in the travel lanes. Radio reports indicated that one of the victims was pinned in the vehicle and had to be extricated.

The center and far left lanes were opened back up for traffic at

1:46 P.M., while the right lane and shoulder remained closed for several more hours.

Some of the agencies that responded to the crash were New Jersey State Police (Hope Station), Knowlton Twp. Fire and Rescue (Station 41), Blairstown Rescue Squad (Rescue 46), Oxford Rescue Squad (Rescue 39), Belvidere Rescue Squad (Rescue 21), and paramedics.

The crash is being investigated by the New Jersey State Police.

Tewksbury, NJ - New Jersey State Police Northstar helicopter on an air medical call on Halsey Farm Road for a fall trauma victim on April 2nd. The landing zone was set up at the end of the residential street in the cul-de-sac. Responding to the medical call were the Tewksbury PD (Patrol 24), Whitehouse Rescue Squad (Rescue 22), Oldwick Fire Co. (Station 24), Lebanon Boro FD (Station 18), and paramedics from Hunterdon Medical Center.
