Lodi, NJ - A large fire tore through a commercial building on South Main Street on the evening of January 2nd. A general alarm was dispatched at 8:42 P.M. for a reported stove fire at 116 South Main Street. First arriving Assistant Chief Mike Lortz confirmed a working fire as a re-dispatch of the alarm was sounded.

New Year’s Day Blaze Destroys Pine Beach Home, Occupant Airlifted Pine Beach, NJ - Shortly after 12:00 P.M. on the afternoon of January 1st, Pine Beach Fire Co. and Beachwood Vol. Fire Department were alerted to the 500 block of Radnor Ave. for a reported working fire.

Just prior to the arrival of FD units, bystanders were able to rescue an elderly female from her vehicle. Unfortunately, the elderly female had suffered burns on her face and upper body and was airlifted to St. Barnabas Burn Center

by EMS. Units initially made an interior attack on the fire, but had to quickly evacuate due to the roof beginning to collapse. Fortunately, nobody else was injured

Five Alarms Transmitted in Wayne Wayne, NJ - A fierce fire struck a commercial building containing a truck repair company on December 9th, causing extensive damage to the structure and prompting a major Haz-Mat clean up.

A steady rain was falling at approximately 6:45 P.M. when Wayne firefighters were dispatched to 2360 Hamburg Turnpike for reports of a fire. First due units were met with explosions and heavy fire through the roof in the rear of a one-story 60'X150' commercial building. Second and third alarms were quickly transmitted. Operations immedi-

JUMP TO FILE #121119103 ately went defensive as water supplies were established and exterior lines went into operation. Three elevated master streams were also put into service.

The fire eventually went to a fifth-alarm level. The heavy fire was knocked down in about a half hour, but flare ups and heavy smoke continued to show from the building. The roof and parts of the walls in the rear collapsed, but the front

of the structure was saved. Haz-Mat units were called in as run-off from the trucking company threatened a nearby stream.

Normally busy Hamburg Turnpike was shut down to the next morning as the clean up continued overnight. No injuries were reported and the initial cause of the fire is believed to be sparks from a grinding operation. Firefighters from Pompton Lakes and Bloomingdale assisted all five Wayne companies at the scene.

Nebraska: John Sing, 67 Rank: Chief Incident Date: November 11, 2019 Death Date: November 11, 2019 Fire Department: Boys Town Fire & Rescue Initial Summary: On Monday, November 11, 2019, at approximately 0200hrs, Chief John Sing responded to an EMS call. When he returned to the station, he collapsed and was immediately taken to the hospital where he passed away from an apparent heart attack.

Massachusetts: Jason Menard, 39 Rank: Lieutenant Incident Date: November 13, 2019 Death Date: November 13, 2019 Fire Department: Worcester Fire Department Initial Summary: In the early morning hours of Wednesday, November 13, 2019, Lieutenant Jason Menard and his crew responded to a multi-residential structure fire, with heavy smoke coming from the building. The fire grew to four alarms and, at one point, firefighters issued a mayday call from the third floor.

Lieutenant Menard and other firefighters became trapped by heavy fire conditions. He helped two firefighters escape the blaze, but the fire quickly worsened and Lieutenant Menard was unable to flee and succumbed to his injuries. Three other firefighters were taken to the hospital. Two of the firefighters have been released and the third is in serious condition.

New York: Darryl Rollins, 42 Rank: Chief Incident Date: November 19, 2019 Death Date: November 20, 2019 Fire Department: North Amityville Volunteer Fire Company Initial Summary: On Tuesday, November 19, 2019, at approximately 1900hrs., Chief Darryl Rollins responded to a possible residential fire. He returned home and was found unresponsive early the next morning. He was im-

mediately taken to the hospital where he passed away from a cardiac arrest.

New York: Robert White, Jr., 65 Rank: Chief Incident Date: December 5, 2019 Death Date: December 5, 2019 Fire Department: West Stockholm Fire Department Initial Summary: On Thursday, December 5, 2019, at approximately 1930hrs., Chief Robert White responded to a residential structure fire in Potsdam, New York.

After arriving at the scene, he collapsed and was immediately taken to the hospital where he passed away. The cause and the nature of death have not yet been determined.

Georgia: George "Johnny" Childs, 64 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: December 4, 2019 Death Date: December 5, 2019 Fire Department: Arcade Fire Department Initial Summary: On Wednesday, December 4, 2019, at approximately 1545hrs., Firefighter George “Johnny” Childs responded to a residential structure fire. The next morning, Thursday, December 5, 2019, he was found unresponsive by his personal vehicle outside a local business. He was immediately taken to the hospital where he passed away from cardiac arrest.

Firefighters Celebrate New Officers and a Special Retirement UPS & DOWNS Notes from Ron Jeffers

Ridgefield Park firefighters assembled at Village Hall on the evening of December 10th to attend their annual ceremony, swearing in the new fire officers for 2020. They gathered with family, friends, firefighters from other municipalities, and local officials. It is always a special night for them; however, this night was extra special for their mayor and public safety commissioner.

This was the last time that Mayor George Fosdick, a volunteer firefighter himself for 55-years, would swear in a village fire chief. He has performed that duty 36 times. After serving on the Board of Commissioners for 36-years, and as mayor for 28-years, the public servant has decided to step down, and he is not running for re-election in May. Mayor Fosdick swore in John Antola, Jr., as fire chief for another term. His father, John Sr., is an exchief. The assistant chiefs are Rodney Wagner and John Malool.

Other officers include captains for the six fire companies. They are William Graves, Engine 1; Tim Rudersvorf, Engine 2; Keith Dassano, Engine 3; James Caroselli, Engine 4; Brian Nevins, Ladder 1; and William Lynn, Ladder 2.

Chief Antola read off his annual report to the Board of Commissioners. The department is updating guidelines to meet modern needs, cancer awareness, and offered recommendations for the future. The department placed a new rescue boat into service, which was used in a successful rescue of a person in the Hackensack River, in June. Volunteer firefighters have participated in over 4,000 hours of training in 2019.

Mayor Fosdick is known by firefighters from around the state in his capacity as president of New Jersey Fire Equipment Company. Fosdick was a history teacher at Ridgefield Park High School from 1963 to 1971. In 1968, he began a part-time job with NJ Fire Equipment, selling firefighting related equipment and Pirsch and Great Eastern (Oren) fire apparatus. With his love of the fire service, this became his full-time job in 1971. He became president of the company in 1987.

Mayor Fosdick told the assembly at Village Hall that he was “honored, proud and privileged” to be part of the ranks of the Fire Department for the past 55-years. He served as Chief of Department in 1983.

Fosdick added how the ranks of volunteer firefighters is declining locally, and across the nation, as people have many more obligations. In addition, there are many hours of training and demands on today's

volunteer members.

Fosdick, again, pointed out that he has worked with “outstanding people” who have served as officers and members of the Ridgefield Park Fire Department. He loves to hear, and tell, old fire stories!

As the mayor ended the promotion ceremony, he repeated one of his favorite fire related stories. As fire chief, he told people to do things, and they did it. As mayor, he asked people to do things, and he hoped they did things. As fire chief, he had a desk, a phone and a car. The mayor didn't have those luxuries.

When he drove through town in the chief's car, people would wave to him. Passing through town, as mayor, it was not always a five finger wave!

With his retirement from public service, Mayor and Public Safety Commissioner Fosdick plans to devote more time to NJ Fire Equipment.

DOWNS: Four men were charged with theft of a firefighter's coat from a Rahway firehouse that occurred on Nov. 29th. They entered the firehouse shortly after 3 a.m., when firefighters were out on a call. They were all caught on a surveillance camera entering and then rummaging through the offices and building, and they left before firefighters returned, officials said. Charged were: Anthony Gallo, Jonathan Kaye, Alexander Navarro-Gamboa and Nicholas Attansio, all 21.

UPS: On Dec. 1st, members of Paramus Truck 4 assisted police disentangle geese that were trapped in a field safety net at the Paramus H.S. Athletic Field. All geese were rescued and continued on their way.

DOWNS: A Robbinsville man severely burned himself after starting a fire while working with an oil burner in a one-family home on Windson Rd., on Thanksgiving. The victim was taken to St. Barnabas MC and was expected to recover, authorities said.

UPS: Rich Applegate was promoted to fire lieutenant in the Meadowlands F.D. DOWNS: A man was killed, and his daughter and another person injured, during an overnight fire involving an Amboy Ave. dwelling in Florence, Dec. 3rd.

UPS: North Arlington Police Officers Nicholas Valakas and Mark Ballantyne used a garden hose and fire extinguisher to extinguish flames that engulfed a shed fire on Arlington Blvd., Nov. 8th. The owner carried out his motionless dog. The officers took the dog and began chest compressions, assisted

by Firefighter Mark Conningham.

North Arlington EMT James Sackerman attached an oxygen mask to the pup. P.O. Ballantyne then drove the pet to Veterinary Care of Clifton, accompanied by Sackerman. The dog was stabilized there and then transferred to Oradell Animal Hospital, in Paramus. “Darla (the dog) made a full recovery for respiratory arrest and minor burns,” said Police Captain Robert Reilly.

DOWNS: A 3-alarm fire consumed all floors of the rear of a Hillside Ave. dwelling in Union, Dec. 1st. Firefighters rescued a woman from a 2nd floor window, Fire Chief Mike Scanio said. The victim sustained burns and was taken to St. Barnabas MC. Another occupant self-extricated the house and was taken to St. Barnabas MC for smoke inhalation.

UPS: Benjamin McHugh has been appointed to the Millburn Fire Department.

DOWNS: A fire consumed a dwelling in the Liberty Corner section of Bernards Twp., Nov. 30th, that took about four hours to control, said Liberty Corners Fire Chief Ron DePasquale. Fire units from nine towns were called in to assist.

UPS: Summit Fire Lt. & Fire SubCode Official Joseph Moschello received the 2019 Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) Fire Official of the Year Award. The award is given annually by the NJ Chapter of the Automatic Fire Alarm Association (AFAA) to an inspector that follows the standards established by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) for enforcing requirements of a code or standard, or for approving equipment, materials, an installation, or a procedure.

DOWNS: Nine cats were killed in a fire that gutted a dwelling in the Pine Ridge section of Manchester, Dec. 8th. The cats lived inside the home. One person who lived there was not home at the time of the fire.

UPS: Millburn Fire Captain Steve Jason has been designated as the fire department's new training officer.

DOWNS: About 13 school buses were damaged when flames ripped through an Evergreen Place depot in East Orange, Dec. 10th.

UPS: On Dec. 10th, Jersey City Fire Department members Anthony Klocko, Paul Tremitiedi, George Conroy and Pat Ducey visited the Wounded Warriors & Armed Forces at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. The firefighters presented their heroes with FDJC T-shirts showing their support and thank you cards signed by members of the department.

Deputy Chief Bergin Loved His City and Fire Department Fast-Moving Blaze Destroys Lodi Building

Hoboken, NJ - William Bergen loved the Fire Service and the City of Hoboken. He served his city for 31-years as a firefighter, rising to the rank of deputy chief. Deputy Chief Bergin passed in December.

“The big part of my younger career was chasing fire engines on a bicycle,” he said in a 2013 interview. He hung out with firemen at his neighborhood firehouse at Second and Jefferson Streets.

Sometime during his army stint he took the test for the Fire Department. He was still in the service when the city planned to hire.

Bergin said the army had an “early out” program. The program included obtaining a job that you might lose. Bergin said he got out of the army on a Friday and went to work in the firehouse on a Monday, in 1960.

Since 1979, Bergin, along with

JUMP TO FILE #010220100 fellow firefighters, volunteered to establish and maintain the Hoboken Fire Museum in a renovated 1881 firehouse on Bloomfield Street. In addition, Bergin served as the fire officer's president for 16-years.

When the old fire headquarters building on Hudson Street was about to be torn down, he noticed that there were a load of photos in a dumpster outside of the building.

He got in the dumpster and saved many photos that are now on display in the museum. Remembering the past was important to him.

Bill Bergin loved Hoboken, the Hoboken Fire Department and the Hoboken Fire Museum.

A general alarm was dispatched at 8:42 P.M. for a reported stove fire at 116 South Main Street.

First arriving Assistant Chief Mike Lortz confirmed a working fire as a re-dispatch of the alarm was sounded.

Chief of Department Steven Cassiello arrived quickly after and upgraded the alarm, with fire showing from the front of the building.

As companies arrived, the fire already had possession of JDM School Uniform Company. Initial reports from firefighters at the scene stated that a woman employee saw smoke by a wall. By the time she acquired some water, the wall was engulfed in flames.

Hand lines went into operation,

Firefighters attempted to line into the structure, but the heavy fire load was rapidly extending, and all members were ordered out of the building. Master streams were set up which included Lodi Truck 1’s tower, Wallington Truck 1’s ladder pipe, and a deck gun from Lodi Engine 612.

Heavy smoke billowed up into the sky and covered the neighborhood. Flames also broke through the roof. Third-alarm companies and special calls for additional mutual aid resources followed. The fire was knocked down, with numerous hot spots extinguished by midnight.

No major injuries were reported, but a Maywood firefighter was treated for a minor injury on scene. Investigators from Bergen County and the Lodi fire official's office were trying to determine what caused the fire.

Mutual aid from Garfield, Maywood, Rochelle Park, Saddle Brook, Wallington and WoodRidge assisted on scene, as well as the Bergen County MSU from Hackensack and BOX-54. Other agencies on scene included the Lodi Vol. Ambulance Squad and the Lodi Office of Emergency Management. Stand by companies from Elmwood Park, Hasbrouck Heights, Little Ferry and Glen Rock covered at fire headquarters.

New Year’s Day Blaze Strikes Palisades Parkway P.D. in Alpine "I'm a supporter and former volunteer of the Crescent City Fire Department in Crescent City, FL. I still work for the city now as a meter reader. I'm also a volunteer for Fire Dog Services Program (a turnout gear recycling program for hand-me-down gear), which I've done since 2011'ish. I got this tattoo around 2013, and I designed it myself. It was inspired by my interest through life being a junior/explorer to a volunteer. Working with FDSP, I have witnessed many stations willing to donate hand-me-down gear to less fortunate smaller stations, and I believe it's just one of the many true definitions of brotherhood; our Fire brothers and sisters working together to help one another out, even in other areas or other parts of the world."

Alpine, NJ - Alpine firefighters battled a four-alarm fire that heavily damaged a section of the Palisades Parkway Police Department on New Year's Day. Shortly before noon, Alpine firefighters were dispatched to 1 Alpine JUMP TO FILE# Approach Road, the 010120107 PIP Police Station, for a fire in an office. Upon arrival of Alpine officers, heavy smoke was showing from the 'Bravo' wing of the main building.

Alpine Engine 1, followed by Engine 2, arrived on scene and stretched two attack lines as fire vented from the first floor window. A second-alarm was quickly transmitted as Demarest's Ladder, Closter's Engine and a FAST Team from Harrington Park arrived on scene and went to work battling the fire. A third-alarm, followed by a fourth-alarm were later transmitted for manpower and additional water from tankers due to only one hydrant on the property.

The fire was quickly knocked down, however extensive overhaul had to be performed. No injuries were reported. Mutual Aid from Demarest, Closter, Harrington Park, Norwood, Northvale, Tenafly, Fort Lee, Upper Saddle River, Saddle River and Sparkill, NY assisted on scene. The fire remains under investigation.

Ups & Downs DOWNS: Fire engulfed the Most Blessed Sacrament Church in Franklin Lakes, Dec. 11th. Local resident James Mayers, 26, was charged with first-degree aggravated arson and burglary by the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office Arson Investigations Unit. The unemployed man was quickly taken into custody by local police after the fire broke out at 1:30 a.m., officials said. Mayers “entered the structure during the early morning hours and purposely started the fire with the use of gasoline and a cigarette lighter," Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.

UPS: On Dec. 12th three West Berlin firefighters were honored for rescuing a woman from a burning apartment at Lindenwold Towers, in Oct. Fire Chief Joe Jackson awarded Lt. Mark Mondile, Lt. Donovan Mihalick and FF Dominick Jackson with the township's valor award.

DOWNS: A multiple-alarm fire involved a building that contained a truck repair shop on Hamburg Tpke. in Wayne, Dec. 9th. Officials believe the fire may have been started by sparks igniting during metal work in a truck shop in the rear of the structure. The fire caused portions of the roof and walls to collapse and oil began to leak into a nearby brook and the Ramapo River.

UPS: Talk show host Rachael Ray and actor Denis Leary visited Edison Firehouse 4, Dec. 16th, to formally announce the department had been awarded a $25,000 grant from the Leary Firefighters Foundation to purchase a Lion Digital Fire Training Panel. This device is used to teach residents, businesses and children

DOWNS: A candle may have been the cause of a fire that involved a onestory dwelling on Lakeview Dr. in Andover, Dec. 9th, officials said. One occupant was home at the time and was not injured.

UPS: Moorestown volunteer firefighter Max Fisher has been named Moorestown's Citizen of the Year for 2020 by the Moorestown Service Club. In addition to his 48-years as a firefighter, he says his greatest achievement has been his participation in the Moorestown Ecumenical Neighborhood Development (MEND). This is a non-profit organization founded by several local churches, and it has been a beacon of affordable housing in Burlington County since 1969.

DOWNS: A multiple-alarm fire at the Bayshore Recycling Center building in the Keasbey section of Woodbridge sent black smoke into the sky and caused a large response from mutual aid fire companies and fire boats, including from the FDNY. According to a report, water flow totals from tanker operations consisted of three fill sites, 24 tankers and 552 loads. A total of 1,934,100-gallons of water was delivered.

UPS: Hackensack firefighters used Ladder 1's aerial ladder to rescue two workers that were stuck above ground in a bucket truck on The Crow's Nest property, Route 17, on Dec. 18th. The workers were evaluated by EMTs and they refused any additional treatment.

DOWNS: A home on Sylvan Rd. in High Bridge suffered extensive damage as the result of a fire on Dec.

10th. Two residents were displaced, officials said.

UPS: In December, members of the Wildwood City Fire Department dedicated a plaque at Juniper and the Boardwalk in memory of Lt. Joseph Walto, who died in the line-of-duty at the disastrous Ocean Pier fire on Christmas Day, 1943. During the ceremony, the Wildwood Fire Company's 1932 American LaFrance pumper, that was at the scene of the fire, was brought to the Boardwalk.

The bell on the engine was used to sound the 5-5-5 signal for Lt. Walto.

DOWNS: More then a dozen people were displaced from their apartments where a fire broke out on Lord Ave., Bayonne, Dec. 17th. Arriving firefighters found fire on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the two-family home, according to Fire Chief Keith Weaver.

UPS: A North Middletown man ran into a burning Mountainside Ave. home, Dec. 18th, and pulled the sleeping occupant to safety. Robery Clancy said he was putting his recycling out to the curb at 7:50 a.m. when he noticed dark smoke coming from his neighbor's house. Clancy knew the 74-year-old resident had just returned from the hospital and used a walker to get around.

DOWNS: A 2-alarm fire displaced 19 people at 247 Broadway, Bayonne, Dec. 19th. The building included five apartments and a restaurant. It suffered heavy damage and was demolished.

UPS: For the 31st year, Summit firefighters and Santa visited the pediatric floor of Overlook Hospital with gifts, and to spread some holiday joy, on Christmas Eve.

DOWNS: Low water pressure and cold temperatures hampered firefighters as they battled an early-morning fire in a three-story commercial building on Main St., Netcong, Dec. 22nd.

UPS: In December, the AtlanticCare Trauma Center and the AtlanticCare Foundation gave 11 trauma go bags to Galloway Township officials and fire department volunteer company representatives.

Each bag has materials the local rescue task force teams could use to provide initial treatment for at least five people in a mass casualty incident.

DOWNS: Two Summit residents were forced to jump from the second-floor of their Weaver St. home during a fire, Dec. 26th, officials said. The two were taken to a local hospital, but their injuries appeared to be non-life-threatening, according to Fire Chief Eric Evers. One firefighter was injured and treated at the scene.

UPS: Recently promoted to deputy fire chief in Trenton were Cliff Willever and Lou Bainbridge.

DOWNS: Firefighters battled a multiple-alarm fire at the Arzee Building Supply Center on Franklin Tpke., Mahwah, on Christmas Eve morning. All five Mahwah fire companies plus mutual aid from Bergen County and Rockland County, N.Y., units went to work as flames lit up the morning sky.

UPS: James Scott has been promoted to battalion chief in Trenton.

DOWNS: An overnight fire on Dec. 27th ripped through the Cosmo Bella Restaurant on Newark-Pompton Tpke., in Pequannock.

UPS: New fire captains in Trenton are Frank Wilcox, Andre Ortiz, Scott Seidl, Steve Muni and Lou Negron.

DOWNS: A Mountainside home on Corinne Terr. sustained severe fire damage on Dec. 23rd. First responders arrived to find the breezeway between the garage and house heavily involved in fire. The two occupants safely self-evacuated with their dog, Police Chief Joseph Giannuzzi said.

UPS: John Taylor has been promoted to deputy fire chief in Hackensack. Calogero Trapani was promoted to captain, and Kurt Nemeczek is the new lieutenant.

DOWNS: One person was killed as the result of a dwelling fire on Rutgers Lane in Parsippany, Dec. 29th. The fire was being investigated by the Morris County Prosecutor's Office Arson & Environment Crimes Unit.

UPS: Michael Weiss has been promoted to Deputy Chief of Operations in Teaneck.

DOWNS: Fire claimed the life of an elderly couple at a Myrtle Ave. home in Butler on New Year's Eve. Their pet cat also perished.

UPS: Richard Burchell was recently promoted to battalion chief in Teaneck.

DOWNS: A New Year's Day fire raced through the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police Headquarters in Alpine, destroying same according to officials. Multiple fire units were called in including tankers due to water pressure problems. Because it

was a law enforcement building, agencies that responded to the scene came from the Bergen County Prosecutor's Arson Investigations Unit, NJ State Police, NJ Fire Marshal's office and the Division of Fire Safety, according to The Daily Voice.

Later, an unidentified electrical problem was listed as the cause of the fire, authorities said.

UPS: Christopher Robbins is the new fire captain in Teaneck.

DOWNS: Two people died and 32 others displaced as the result of an early-morning 2-alarm fire in an Island View Court apartment building in Bayonne, Jan. 3rd. Two victims were removed from the apartment and transported to Bayonne Medical center where they succumbed to their injuries, according to a local O.E.M. Facebook report.

UPS: Jason Sorrenti and Leonard Hanauer have been promoted to fire lieutenant in Teaneck.

DOWNS: A Totowa man was killed and his mother rescued in an early-morning fire involving a dwelling at Gordon & Chamberlin Ave.'s, Dec. 28th. Officials said the 62-year-old man was trapped on the 2nd floor after the fire broke out. His 89-year-old mother, who lived on the first-floor, was rescued by firefighters who found her on a couch.

UPS: In December, members of the Beachwood F.D. delivered a 1936 American LaFrance pumper to the New Jersey Firemen's Home in Boonton, where it is now on display in their museum. Past Chief Donald Wienser purchased and restored the rig in the 1970's. It originally belonged to the Irvington F.D., according to a Facebook post. Chief Wiesner was a long-time manager of the home representing Ocean County. He is currently a guest, residing at the facility. Next to the home is the museum that Chief Wiesner helped create when he was on the board of managers. The chief and the 1936 pumper are back together, again.

DOWNS: Fire officials in Elizabeth were investigating the cause of a fire that tore through a three-story rooming house on Westfield Ave., early New Year's Day. Igniting fireworks was listed as a possibility.

UPS: New Wallington fire department and emergency squad officers were sworn in at a ceremony at Company 2's quarters on January 4th. Mark Tomko received special recognition for his 44-years of service to the department, plus his service to the community as a commissioner and mayor. Chief of Department Robert Ventura praised Tomko for all of the support he has give the fire department over the years. “Thank you for where we are,” Ventura said. Part of an inscription on a plaque that he received said that his “Selfless and tireless service to all of us has not gone unnoticed.” Tomko called the department “my family.” During his many years of service he referred to the term “price tag". “Never say never for the safety of the citizens of your town,” he added. His service is not done. During the ceremony, Tomko was sworn in as the department's president.

Overnight Fire Destroys Pequannock Restaurant Pequannock, NJ - An overnight fire on December 27th destroyed a popular Pequannock pizzeria just short of its 50th anniversary. The fire began at approximately 1:10 A.M., when firefighters were dispatched to Cosmo Bella restaurant at 153 Newark Pompton Turnpike on a reported fire.

As Chief Murphy arrived he had heavy fire on the first floor that was rapidly extending to the second floor which housed apartments, and an exposure concern on the 'B' side of the building was also reported.

With heavy fire on both floors, command evacuated the building as heavy fire vented through the roof.

The roof of the restaurant began to collapse, along with the sign over the entrance that became edged in the ruins of the roof area.

Mutual aid from Lincoln Park, Riverdale and Wayne operated on scene, along with the Pequannock EMS Squad.

Authorities are trying to determine the cause, although initial indications suggest that it likely was accidental. No injuries were reported.

Cucina Povera translates from Italian to English as “poor cooking”. It is a term used to describe the food and recipes of rural Italian cooking centuries ago. This “style” of cooking was not one of intentions, but more of necessities.

These times were very trying and with meat being so scarce, many of the recipes that come from this period are very heavy on vegetables. There was also no waste, as evident in the recipe for biscotti, where the Tuscans “twice-cooked” the biscuits to make them last longer. Or in Ribolitta, a thick bread soup which is “re-boiled” to further extend its use.

Cucina Povera can be looked at from a philosophical point

waiting to die a slow, wilting death. So rather than plan a meal based off what I want to cook, I like to base it off of what is available to use. And no dish is designed better for this application than soup!

Minestrone soup is a dish from the Cucina Povera era, and is still popular many years later after it originated. For good reason too!

It is packed with vitamins, nutrients, protein and flavor! There are many recipes out there for it, but use what you’ve got on hand. Any vegetables will work, just keep in mind cooking times vary for the types you use. In this recipe I also blend some of the beans with the stock, which when added back to the soup, adds body. If you prefer a more liquid soup, skip this step.

There is also no meat in this recipe, but if you must, the addition of crumbled sausage would be delicious!

MINESTRONE SOUP Serves 6

Ingredients:

1 Yellow Onion, chopped 3 Cloves of Garlic, chopped 3 Carrots, peeled and rough chopped 3 Celery Stalks, rough chopped 3 Yukon Gold Potatoes, cubed 5 Stalks Kale, leaves torn and stems chopped Handful Fresh Green Beans, ends removed and cut into 1” pieces 2 Zucchini, chopped 1 Sprig of Fresh Rosemary 1 Bay Leaf 1 T Tomato Paste 28 oz. Can of Diced Tomatoes (No Salt Added if possible) 48 oz. Low Sodium Chicken Broth 19 oz. Can of Cannellini Beans Extra Virgin Olive Oil Chili Flakes Salt to taste Procedure:

-Heat a large Dutch oven or pot over medium heat. Add enough oil to just coat the bottom of the pot. When the

The Italian peasants either used whatever vegetables they had on hand, or found ways to repurpose what they had already cooked. It is absolutely one of my favorite ways to approach cooking, especially for the firehouse.

We all know cooking at the firehouse is one ripe with budget constraints and opinions. Using the Cucina Povera approach allows us to keep costs low by using ingredients we may have on hand already, rather than having to go out and shop for an entire meal. I almost always take a look in the fridge before heading out to the supermarket, a reconnaissance mission of sorts. There is almost always a half onion not used, or maybe a bag of carrots on their way out. Leftover fresh herbs, which I highly recommend for their flavor over dried, are going to be inevitably left in the crisper

oil starts to shimmer, add the onions, bay leaf and rosemary. Season with a pinch of salt and chili flake.

When the onions are translucent add the garlic, carrots, celery and kale. Stirring often, cook until the vegetables are light golden brown.

Add the tomato paste and stir for about a minute.

-Stir in the diced tomatoes and cook until most of the liquid has evaporated. Add the chicken broth and bring to a boil, then lower to a simmer. Add the potatoes, half of the beans, zucchini and green beans. Continue cook-

ing until the potatoes are soft, about 20 minutes.

-While the soup is cooking, take a ladle of soup broth and put in a blender with the remaining half of the beans.

Let cool for a couple minutes. Carefully, blend the beans and add the bean purée to the soup.

-Taste and season before serving. Garnish with celery leaves, parmesan cheese and a drizzle of olive oil.

West Milford Firefighters Battle House Fire and Frigid Temperatures West Milford, NJ - On December 19th, the West Milford Fire Department responded to a fully involved structure fire at 21 Dan Jennings Road.

JUMP TO FILE# Firefighting ef- 122219106 forts were initially hampered by live power lines that came down. Frigid temperatures were also encountered. A tanker shuttle and water relay was established with assistance from surrounding mutual aid departments, and the fire was brought under control in about 45 minutes.

One firefighter was transported to the hospital for evaluation due to exhaustion. The fire is under investigation by the West Milford Fire Marshal's Office.

Santa & Miss New Jersey Continue a Bergen Tradition Bergenfield, NJ - With the absence of the traditional holiday parade in Wallington this year, Santa's helpers got together in Bergenfield to keep the first responder celebration going in Bergen County.

On the evening of December 22nd, about 30-plus pieces of fire apparatus, ambulances and other first responder units assembled on West Clinton Avenue, near the Prospect Fire Company quarters, for an evening parade. They came from local departments, West Caldwell in Essex County, and Hillcrest, N.Y. Like the Wallington event, first responders decorated their vehicles, parked on the street, with lights and other holiday decorations.

The firehouse was open, and a large food vendor trailer occupied the apron, with food cooking and smoke from the exhaust rising into the emergency lights on the block!

With the word out that Wallington would not hold the parade this year, a group of community-active people quickly formed to hold a similar type parade in Bergenfield. Under the leadership of committee coordinator Cindy Naylis, Mayor Norm Schmelz and

With the temperature in the 40's, it was a comfortable evening for children, parents and other spectators to wait along the parade route, through town, to see the emergency equipment decked out in holiday lights and, of course, Santa Claus!

An added celebrity arrived to assist Santa as the parade began.

Miss New Jersey, Leighke Santiago, jumped up on Engine 1's apparatus to join Santa and Mayor Schmez, to be in on the fun.

The parade ended back at the Prospect firehouse, where awards were given out to participants, photos taken with Santa and Miss New Jersey, and holiday cheer distributed among all. “The streets were packed with kids and parents, with everyone happy to see apparatus and ambulances decked out in holiday lights,� said Santa at the end of his run.

Fatal Multiple-Alarm Claims One Life in Totowa Totowa, NJ - An early morning fire claimed the life of a 62year-old man and sent his 89-year-old mother to the hospital for observation. At approximately 5:40 A.M. on Saturday, December 28th, an alert area resident JUMP TO FILE# reported a house 010320110 fire at 205 Gordon Avenue.

First-arriving units on scene confirmed a working house fire and reported the possibility of occupants still inside.

The elderly woman was located on the first floor and brought to safety as crews made several attempts to reach the second floor in search of her son. They were pushed back by heavy fire and already compromised flooring, and were ultimately forced to evacuate when the structure was in danger of collapse.

Additional alarms brought mutual aid into the borough with Little Falls, West Paterson and Wayne responding directly to the fire scene, and Paterson and Haledon to standby at Fire HQ. A special request was made for the Paterson RAC Unit to the scene to fill air bottles. The Totowa First Aid Squad operated at the scene.

The fire was placed under control in approximately three hours by Chief Shopperth, and is under investigation by the Passaic

County Prosecutor's Office, the PCSD CSI Team and the Totowa FD for cause and origin (which is standard procedure when a fatality

Early-Morning Fire Guts Home in Clifton Clifton, NJ - Residents of a Clifton home barely escaped their home as flames traveled throughout the structure early in the morning of December 15th.

Fire units were sent to 39 Melody Hill Road (correct numeric was 35) at 4:15 A.M. for the report of a fully involved house and residents evacuating, with one being carried. Police confirmed the report.

After the heavy fire was knocked down on the first floor,

flames continued to roll around in the attic area. Ladder 3’s ladder pipe was put into service to quell the fire there. The blaze was well knocked down within one hour, but overhaul and final extinguishment lasted well past dawn due to the condition of the structure.

No serious injuries were reported, and the cause is being investigated.

Rutherford Battles Early-Morning House Fire

Rutherford, NJ - Fire destroyed a nearly 100-year-old Rutherford home in the early morning hours of December 7th.

Just before 4:00 A.M., companies were dispatched to 12 Walnut Street on a reported house fire. Arriving chiefs were met with heavy fire venting from the home. A second-alarm was quickly struck, bringing mutual aid units to the scene.

The fire appeared to have originated in the kitchen on the first floor and quickly extended

Companies were withdrawn from the home on two seperate occasions as conditions worsened. A master stream was used to knock down heavy fire in the attic that eventually blew through the roof.

I was listening to a speaker a while back and they were discussing that certain diseases or health conditions earn certain food.

If you think about it, you will notice the truth behind it. People with certain diseases, visitors come over and bring casseroles. If other people spend time in the hospital, an edible arrangement, of fruit, is sent to the house.

Recently, I went over to a friend’s house, who has a physical challenge, and there was a team of supporters, with 14 people in the room. It was good to see that there were so many people there to show support and love.

This morning it made me think, what is it like for someone with a mental health issue or substance abuse challenge? Where is the team that comes together for them? I know people who deal with depression or PTSD or substance addiction. You want to guess how many people show support? What food do

you bring over?

I have talked with many people who have substance addictions.

Many of them told me that they had a crisis or trauma in life. They never sought help for one reason or another. I have even heard of people being told that they are to never cry or talk about what happened. Talk about a reason why some of these people have challenges. Do we take the time to really talk to people?

For many of us, when someone is in the hospital for a surgery or treatment, we may go over to visit.

How do we handle someone with a mental health issue? Do we just avoid the person? How would you feel if you were that person?

Many people put a stigma with people who have mental health issues. Did you know that 20% of Americans have mental health issues? That means that 1 in 5 of us has challenges. Think about people in your family. Who do you know that may be depressed? Do you realize that depression untreated may lead to someone taking their own life?

One thing that sticks me strange is that so many times people say that they never expected the person to take their own life. My question is simple, did you bother to engage the person when they were going

home as well as the siding of the exposure before it was knocked down just after 5:00 A.M. A 58-year-old woman, the only occupant in the house at the time, was hospitalized for smoke inhalation, police said. The cause wasn't immediately determined and is currently under investigation. Mutual aid from Carlstadt, East Rutherford, Moonachie, North Arlington, Secaucus and others assisted.

Have you taken a Mental Health First Aid Course, or a Suicide Awareness Course, or a Psychological First Aid Course? There are many places that we can learn to help someone, but are you willing to take the first step? Did you check out the SAMHSA website? Or any other mental health website?

Be brave enough to help others.

By helping others on this issue, you may even find out that you may need some assistance, or you may finally take care of the issue that you have been denying for years.

The first part of healing is to admit that you have a challenge and work to get the assistance that you need. The best thing that you can do, to be a good friend, relative, church member or what have you, is to care about all people. The Good Book that I read tells me that we are to love our neighbor. That’s it PERIOD. There are no qualifications as to who that person is, or what condition that they have.

Remove the Stigma, Show the love.

A Christmas Surprise for Military/Firefighter’s Son Secaucus, NJ - North Hudson Firefighter Phil Jawny, of Rescue Co. 1, was activated about seven months ago and is currently serving overseas with the US Air Force. The airman couldn't spend Christmas with his 6-year-old son, Phil Jr., at their Secaucus home, but his fellow firefighters spread a little Christmas joy for him and his mother, Lisette.

Members of Rescue 1, Squad 1 and Battalion 2 (Group 4), which share the same Union City firehouse on 43rd Street, came up with a plan. The members went out and purchased their own gifts for Phil Jr., to deliver to his home.

The gifts included one from Secaucus Mayor, and volunteer firefighter, Mike Gonnelli.

These crew members were on duty for 24 hours on Christmas Day, so Phil Jr.'s holiday extended into December 26th. When they got off duty that morning, Captain Pete Mancini and Firefighters Jamie Montes, Fernando As-

Christmas Morning Blaze Hits Mahwah

A memorial adorns the sides of Kenilworth Engine 63's new Pierce pumper in memory of Chief Lou Kelly. He was a member of the Elizabeth Fire Department for 34-years, rising to the rank of Chief of Department. The well-respected chief loved the Fire Service and dedicated his life to same. After retirement, he became a Union County Mutual Aid Coordinator (MAC-7), and kept on rolling to major fires. The 70-year-old veteran died in 2016 after operating at a mutual aid fire in Clark.

Mahwah, NJ - A five-alarm fire ripped through a commercial building early Christmas morning in Mahwah. The Mahwah Fire Department responded at around 4:41 A.M. to the Arzee Building Supply on Franklin Turnpike, according to Chief Stephen Jaffe.

The fire, which appeared to have originated in the rear of the building, quickly extended and eventually vented through the roof of the one-story business. A water supply issue going into the scene occurred during the operation, but

At the fire's height, seven elevated streams were in operation from Mahwah, Wyckoff, Ramsey, Midland Park, Tallman and Suffern ladders, along with numerous outside lines. Eventually, the building began to collapse in the rear.

The Bergen County Haz-Mat was requested to the scene after a

1,000-gallon tank was compromised. Mutual aid from Bergen and Passaic Counties, and Orange and Rockland Counties from New York operated on scene or covered Mahwah firehouses. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection was also on scene.

The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office Arson Squad is investigating the cause of the fire, which is not yet known. No injuries have been reported.

A memorial, painted by local artist Ed May, adorns the sides of Leonia Engine 2's new KME pumper for Firefighter Kevin Karros.

Karros was a much loved and respected 50-year member of the department. He took special interest in fire apparatus and pride in the LFD fleet. In his 50-years with the department, he served on numerous truck committees, planning out specifications on apparatus that ranged from pumpers, aerial ladders and rescue trucks.

In addition, he was responsible for setting up two former ambulances into Field Communication trucks that served the East Bergen area. Firefighter Karros, 70, passed away on May 13th.

On December 22nd, Hamilton Township firefighters from Stations 13 and 16 rescued a deer that was stuck in the middle of the ice in a lake at DAM Site 21 in Mercer County Park. Marine Units 13 and 16 with Firefighters Jeff Peoples, Tim Sharply Jr., and Frank Barkosky used a boat and ice breaking tools to reach the deer.

Chief 16, Richard Kraemer, had command of the operation. The rescued deer was taken to Mercer County Wildlife Center in Hopewell by a Hamilton Township Animal Control Officer.

Christmas Duty Continues for NJ Firefighters North Bergen, NJ - For over 30 years, firefighters in North Hudson have been assembling during the Christmas season to brighten up children that are spending the holiday in area hospitals. Firefighters, along with Santa and his helpers, show up with gifts for all.

One of these activities started as an idea by North Bergen Firefighters Jim Lemke and the late George Welch, Jr. It has evolved into an event where hundreds of toys are donated, wrapped, and then passed out to children in local hospitals.

Every December, firefighters,

JUMP TO FILE #121119110 family and friends assemble in the basement of a Kennedy Boulevard church to wrap presents. Children are entertained, which includes an early visit from Santa Claus.

When the NBFD became part of the North Hudson Regional department, firefighters from all five municipalities took part in the event. That includes Union City, West New York, Guttenberg and Weehawken.

Each year, the George Welsh, Jr., Award is presented to a fire-

fighter or civilian for their dedication and hard work to make this event successful. On December 8th, past winners of the award lined up with committee leader, Battalion Chief James Corso and Mrs. Welch, and presented the 2019 honor to Captain Vincent Vacca.

Firefighters throughout the state, and the country, take time out of their personal lives to see that children in poor communities and in hospitals receive a little joy for Christmas, and encourage them that better days are ahead.

Union City, NJ - An elderly woman accidentally rammed her car into the north wall of the Taco Bell restaurant in the 3500 block of Kennedy Boulevard, shortly before 2:00 P.M., on December 16th. A parked car, in the JUMP TO FILE# parking lot, was 121719106 also damaged.

The driver suffered an arm injury, and she was assisted

by North Hudson firefighters and treated by Union City EMTs at the scene. The woman refused to go to the hospital. No one was injured inside the restaurant.

The North Hudson Regional F.D. dispatched a rescue assignment, and later special called UASI Rescue 2 and the Shoring Unit.

The striking and parked vehicles were up against each other.

Rescue 1 pulled the parked car out of the way in order for first responders to assist the driver out of her vehicle and take her to a city ambulance for examination.

The restaurant manager said a private company would secure the building and that an engineer would show up in the morning to assess the damage. A city building inspector was on the scene, as the woman was being removed from her auto.

This is a soft cover book measuring 5 ½ inches by 8 ½ inches. It has 88 pages, which are color coded to specify different types of apparatus. The photos are all in

color, plus there's an introduction page, abbreviations, and the last two pages have apparatus assignments by unit.

The book has quality page material and as is usual for Fire Apparatus Journal, it is put together magnificently. It portrays the apparatus that was part of the department at the time the book was made up. It includes a photo of each apparatus with appropriate data and the number purchased in the order.

In most cases, registration numbers and assignments are given. There is also an explanation on how to interpret the registration numbers.

The apparatus photos in the case of special units does not always have an indication as to the responsibility of that unit. Hard core buffs of the New York City Fire Department would naturally know the duties. The photos again as usual are of top quality by experienced apparatus photographers.

Crews Respond to Crane Incident in Hamilton Twp. Hamilton Twp., NJ - On December 27th, Township Special Operations Companies, Squad 12, Rehab 12, Truck 13, Engines 16 and 19, and Hamilton Duty Chief 16, Richard Kraemer, were dispatched to Miry Brook Road in Hamilton, for a 63,000-pound crane that came down on a house where a tree removal crew was working.

JUMP TO FILE #010220113 The special operation companies were called to secure and stabilize the crane. A non-emergency basic life support ambulance was called to standby. PSEG was requested to secure the utilities in the residence, along with Hamil-

ton HAZMAT to mitigate the fuel/oil spill. Two heavy wreckers were called to upright the crane.

No injuries were reported.

Fire Strikes Englewood Cliffs Construction Site Englewood Cliffs, NJ - At about 5:30 A.M. on December 22nd, Englewood Cliffs firefighters were called to 12 Clifton Terrace for the report of a heavy smoke condition.

A large twoand-a-half story frame dwelling that was under construction and attached to JUMP TO FILE# a garage with living 122619105 space above was showing a heavy smoke condition. An engine and truck from Fort Lee was called to the scene.

Members stretched a line and made entry. A heating unit on the first floor was hot and charring the surrounding wood, and emitting smoke from under the floor. The floor was cut and the small crawlspace below was accessed.

Movement was difficult, but water was put on the area below the heating unit, and slowly the smoke dissipated with no extension to the rest of the home or attached structure. No injuries were reported.

Cliffside Park Firefighter William Killinger loved his town, the fire department, and he especially loved the Christmas season. He was the force behind the CPFD's many Christmas tours, hospital visits and other holiday related events. Billy passed away early in the year. The Borough and Fire Department have honored his memory by continuing the many local holiday projects and re-naming the parade of Santa, and his helpers around town, as the William Killinger Christmas Tour. This first annual tour, held on December 13th and 14th, was a total success. Children and adults ran out of their homes to see Santa and his helpers and receive lollipops. Every street in the Borough is covered over the two day period, in three shifts. Members of the tour, including Killinger's son and brothers, participated in the event. The heavy rain on the evening of Friday the 13th did not hamper their enthusiasm or dedication.

Garwood Gets First Aerial Piece

In Union County, the Borough of Garwood, with an area of 425-acres, has placed into service their first aerial device. According to the fire chief it was bought to provide aerial capabilities for accessing all existing structures and addressing future development. It replaces a 1973 Hahn 1000-GPM pumper. The all volunteer fire department also has a 1993 Pierce quadruple combination pumper, which remains an active piece.

The new truck is a 2019 Spartan/Smeal 100-foot platform mounted on a Gladiator MFD chassis. Specs include a Cummins ISX 15, 600 hp diesel engine, Waterous CSU 200-GPM pump, UPF 300-gallon water tank and a Harrison 10 kw hydraulic generator. The platform mounts a TFT Monsoon RC monitor.

Other featured photos include two Port Authority of NY & NJ Oshkosh Stryker crash trucks protecting Teterboro Airport in Bergen County. Designated Rescue 51 and 52, they have identical specs except that one has a 50foot Snozzle and the other a 10 kw generator and Command Light. Teterboro is 1.1-square-miles, most of which is the airport. I once heard many years ago that there were only about seven private homes, with at the time about 21 people.

There are also a number of businesses and industries. Outside of the airport Hasbrouck Heights provide fire protection and EMS. Then we feature a Ferrara HD-77 quint in Spring Lake Heights (Monmouth County), which replaced a 1990 102-foot Grumman rearmount platform with 1500-GPM pump (no tank), which once served Colonie, NY. The new quint is now their first out piece. Next is another Pierce pumper for West Orange in Essex County. It is assigned to Engine 2, but was photographed at headquarters due to more space. A new E-ONE pumper in Middlesex Boro is also featured, replacing a Mack CF pumper which has a Glider Kit rebuild. Finally, we have Greenwich (Cumberland County) International/KME pumper/tanker, which replaced an elliptical tanker that had an updated chassis under an older tank.

In Mount Olive Township (Morris County), Budd Lake’s former Squad 56, the 2003 Seagrave Marauder 1500/1000 pumper, now serves with the Greeley, PA Volunteer Fire Department in Pike County.

In dealer news, Firefighter 1 reports the following Ferrara apparatus in production: a Cinder pumper with extruded aluminum body, Hale Qmax 2000GPM pump and 750-gallon water tank for Belleville and a Cinder pumper with extruded aluminum body, Hale Qmax 1750-GPM pump and 1000-gallon water tank for Essex Fells (both Essex County), an Inferno pumper/tanker with extruded aluminum body, Hale Qflo Plus 1250-GPM pump and 3000-gallon water tank for Jefferson Township FC 2 in Morris County, and an Ultra heavy rescue with extruded aluminum body for Wildwood City (Cape May County).

Pierce deliveries include a Velocity heavy duty rescue with non-walk-in body to Packanack Lake FC in Wayne Township (Passaic County), a Velocity dry side tanker to Freehold Township District 1 (Monmouth County), an Arrow XT tanker/pumper to Seaville (Cape May County), and an Enforcer PUC pumper to the Ralston FC in Mendham Township (Morris County).

VCI Emergency Vehicle Specialists reports that the Montclair Ambulance Unit (Essex County) has taken delivery of the Horton 453 re-mounted on a 2019 Ford E-350 chassis.

Blaze Emergency Equipment has delivered a Sutphen heavy rescue to

the Pinewald Pioneer VFC in Berkeley Township (Ocean County). The other is for Hillside (Union County) on a Warrior chassis with FX body, Cummins 450 hp diesel engine, six seat cab, Rosenbauer 1500-GPM pump, 750gallon water and 30-gallon Class “A” foam tanks and hot dipped frame rails.

They have delivered to Willingboro (Burlington County) a P.L. Custom Medallion ambulance on a Ford E-450 chassis, and to the Nutley Volunteer Emergency & Rescue Squad (Essex County), a P.L. Custom Type 1 Classic on a Ford F450, 4x4 chassis.

Thirty years ago, a family living in a home that caught fire had about 15 to 17 minutes to escape unharmed. Today, that number has dropped to a harrowing three to four minutes. Read on to learn why and how you can prepare your house for fire safety during the holiday season and beyond.

They Just Don’t Make ’Em Like They Used To Home fires move faster today.

Two major culprits: modern, cheaply made furniture and synthetic fabric coverings. As wood furniture and natural linens are replaced with particle board and polyester, house fires spread faster. Synthetic fibers burn hotter and faster than natural fibers. An estimated 3,400 Americans died in fires in 2017, a number that has steadily increased since 2013.

Residential fires also greatly outnumber nonresidential fires, contributing to 73% of fire deaths.

Risk of Home Fires Increases During Holidays, Winter Months According to the National Fire Protection Association, more home fires occur during the winter months than any other season of the year. There are many contributing factors, including: -Heating – Heating is the second-leading cause of home fires, deaths and injuries. Space heaters especially contribute to this number. Always turn off all space heaters before falling asleep.

Check your space heater for cracked or damaged cords and plugs. Plug space heaters directly into wall outlets and not into extension cords or power strips.

Keep anything that can burn at least three feet from all heat sources, including fireplaces, wood stoves, radiators, space heaters or candles.

JUMP TO FILE #010820102 -Candles – More than onethird of home decoration fires are started by candles. If you can, replace real flame with flameless candles. If you do choose to light traditional candles, place them at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn. Never leave the home or go to sleep with candles burning.

-Christmas trees – A heat source too close to a Christmas tree causes one in four winter fires, and approximately one out of every 52 Christmas tree fires results in death. Trees must be at least three feet away from a heat source, should bebtrimmed with properly functioning lights and shouldn’t block any exits. Keep all trees well-watered, and discard promptly after the holidays.

Safety Checklist for Your Home If you haven’t done a firesafety check in your home, now is the time! Most importantly, make sure all of the smoke alarms in your home are working, and don’t forget to change those batteries once a year. Smoke alarms should be placed in every sleeping area, outside every sleeping area and on each floor.

Having a fire escape plan could mean the difference between life and death. Make a plan with your family to find two exits in every room, even if one of them is a window, and keep those exits clear.
