Heavy Fire on Arrival in Nashua NASHUA, NH - On the evening of January 10th, Nashua fire­ fighters arrived to find smoke showing from the attic and fire out of the rear windows of a large multi-family structure on Jefferson Street. Deputy Chief Kirk arrived on scene and struck a second-alarm, bringing in extra companies to the fire. Crews made an aggressive interior attack, knocking down the heavy fire on the second floor and attic. Companies remained on scene overhauling and checking for extension.

First due firefighters made an aggressive interior attack, but had to withdraw due to some early water problems. A second-alarm was transmitted at 5:41 P.M., and

the third-alarm at 5:59 RM., bring­ ing in numerous mutual aid tankers to shuttle water into the scene. The heavy fire was knocked down at 7:30 P.M. "When it's that cold out you want as many people as possible to put the fire out," France said. Four people were home at the time of the fire, but no injuries were reported.

The fire is under investigation.

FRANCESTOWN, NH - On Christmas night, 12/25/222, Francestown, NH and automatic aid responded to 365 East Road for a structure fire. Prior to arrival additional informa­ tion was reported that fire was in the dwelling and a secondalarm was ordered. Companies arrived and deployed multiple hand lines while a draft site was established. The collective volunteer/on-call departments were able to make a good stop, keeping the bulk of the fire contained to the garage.

Exhaust Fan Fire in Nashua NASHUA, NH - Nashua firefighters were dispatched to a re­ ported exhaust fan fire in an apartment on Ternbury Sq., De­ cember 16, 2022. Engine 3 arrived on scene and reported a fire in the ceiling that extended into the attic. Fire alarm filled the assignment and companies stretched two lines. The fire was quickly knocked down.

Florida: Douglas Clemons, 56 Rank: Fire Engineer/Paramedic Incident Date: June 14,2022 Death Date: June 14,2022 Fire Department: Polk County Fire Rescue Initial Summary: On Tuesday, June 14, 2022, while on-duty at the fire station, Fire Engineer/Paramedic Douglas Clemons expe­ rienced a medical emergency. He was imme­ diately transported to the hospital where he passed away a short time later from an appar­ ent heart attack.

was at a training exercise when he suffered a medical emergency and collapsed. He was immediately taken to the Huntsville Hospital where he passed away a short time later. In­ vestigation into the incident continues.

Wisconsin: Riley Daniel Ray Huiras, 20 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: July 30,2022 Death Date: August 3,2022 Fire Department: Grand Rapids Volunteer Fire Department Initial Summary: Firefighter Riley Daniel Ray Huiras responded to a working fire on the evening of July 30,2022. On his way back from the fire, a call came in for a motor vehi­ cle crash. Firefighter Huiras, along with an­ other member of his fire department, responded to the crash scene. After these two responses, he returned home. Then, sometime between 2 and 6 a.m. on July 31,2022, Fire­ fighter Huiras reportedly suffered a brain aneurysm. He was subsequently transported to the hospital where he passed away on Aug. 3,2022.

Tennessee: David Pleasant, 59 Rank: Driver Incident Date: August 10,2022 Death Date: August 10,2022 Fire Department: Memphis Fire Department Initial Summary: On Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2022,4 firefighters were responding to a resi­ dential fire when the driver of a pick-up track apparently ran a red light, hitting the fire ap­ paratus and causing it to roll on its' side. All 4 firefighters were transported to the Regional One Health Trauma Center. Driver David Pleasant passed away from the injuries he sustained in the crash. The other 3 firefighters have been treated and released. The driver of the pick-up track was also transported to the hospital. Investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Colorado: Collin Hagan, 27 Rank: Wildland Firefighter Incident Date: August 10,2022 Death Date: August 10,2022 Fire Department: BLM-Craig Interagency Hotshot Crew Initial Summary: On Wed., Aug 10,2022, Wildland Firefighter Collin Hagan was fight­ ing the Big Swamp Wildfire near Oakridge, Oregon, when he was struck by a falling tree.

Despite efforts from EMS personnel, Wild­ land Firefighter Hagan passed away from the injuries he sustained in the accident.

Alaska: Douglas “Doug” Ritchie, 56 Rank: Pilot Incident Date: June 26,2022 Death Date: June 26,2022 Fire Department: State of Alaska Division of Forestry and Fire Protection

Initial Summary: On Sunday, June 26,2022, Pilot Douglas "Doug" Ritchie, the sole occu­ pant of a Bell UH1B Helicopter, was support­ ing firefighting efforts at the Clear Wildland Fire, when the helicopter crashed after take­ off, killing Pilot Ritchie. Investigation into the incident continues.

New York: Michael Fischer, 38 Rank: Captain Incident Date: August 14,2022 Death Date: August 14,2022 Fire Department: Island Park Fire Department Initial Summary: On Sunday, Aug. 14,2022, Captain Michael Fischer had participated in a morning training event, then rode on an en­ gine company to where firefighters were holding a fundraiser. Arriving at the event, Captain Fischer went into the bathroom to wash up, then returned to the dining area, when he suffered an apparent heart attack.

EMS personnel at the scene performed life­ saving measures, but were unsuccessful. Cap­ tain Fischer was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Oregon: Logan Taylor, 25 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: Aug. 18,2022 Death Date: Aug. 18,2022 Fire Department: Oregon Department of Forestry Initial Summary: On August 18,2022, shortly after 4:00 p.m., dispatchers received information regarding Firefighter Logan Tay­ lor who was critically injured after being struck by a tree on the Rum Creek Fire, lo­ cated north of Galice, Oregon. Jackson County Sheriffs Office Search and Rescue immediately deployed a helicopter and per­ sonnel to the fire. Upon their arrival, Taylor was airlifted out of the mountainous terrain to an awaiting Mercy Flights helicopter, which then transported him to Asante Rogue Re­ gional Medical Center. Despite lifesaving ef­ forts, however, Taylor passed away from the injuries he sustained. Taylor was the operator of Sasquatch Reforestation, a company that contracted with the Oregon Department of Forestry.

Mayday Called at Taftville House Fire TAFTVILLE, CT - At 8:04 P.M. on Wednesday, January 4th, the Taftville Fire Department with automatic aid from Norwich En­ gine 2, Truck 1 and Battalion 1, were dispatched to 112 Norwich Avenue for reported flames coming from a window.

Engine 2 (Reserve Engine 4) arrived at 8:08 P.M. reporting fire showing from the windows of the first floor Delta' side of a two-anda-half story wood-frame residential apartment building. The working fire was transmitted, which added Occum Engines 41 and 42, Yantic Engine 33 and Rescue 3, as well as the Mohegan Tribal FAST & Amer­ ican Ambulance.

Engine 2's crew stretched a one-and-three-quarter inch hose line to the front door and experi­ enced a pump failure on the 1995 Reserve Engine 4. Taftville's En­ gine 21 arrived next and connected

After a slight delay. Engine 2's crew advanced their line into the first floor and began suppressing fire.

Engine 2 l's crew then stretched an interior line while Trucks 1 and 25 set up for vertical ventilation. En­ gine 22 laid in from a hydrant and established a water supply.

While a member was perform­ ing the primary search of the sec­ ond floor, he became disoriented and was running low on air so a Mayday was transmitted at 8:25 P.M. The Mohegan Tribal FAST was activated. The firefighter was able to find a find a window, which he smashed out and then performed a head first bailout onto a ladder that was thrown by Rescue 3.

Command requested the evacu­ ation tone and conducted a PAR of all companies on the fireground.

Heavy fire began venting from the first and second floors, so ladder pipes were set up. Engine 33 estab­ lished the water supply for Truck 1, and Engine 41 established the water supply for Truck 25.

We are very lucky with the out­ come of this incident and that two firefighters sustained only minor in­ juries. The Norwich Fire Marshal's Office is investigating with the as­ sistance from the Connecticut State Police Fire and Explosion Investi­ gation Unit.

Car Vs. Propane Storage Rack in Norwich NORWICH, CT - On Monday, December 26, 2022 around 1:25 P.M., the East Great Plain Vol. Fire Co. was dispatched to 565 West Main St. (Sunoco Gas Station) for a vehicle accident, with the vehicle on top of propane tanks and the occupant still inside the vehicle.

Upon arrival of Car 5, the Nor­ wich Police advised that the occu­ pant was out of the vehicle. The vehicle came to a rest on top of a propane storage rack with about (20) 201b. propane cylinders inside the storage rack. Car 5 had the gas station secure power to the pumps and close the store. Rescue 5 and Engine 52 arrived. The rescue crew started metering the area and Engine 52 crew stretched a hand line.

It was determined that it didn't appear there was any damge to the cylinders and none were leaking.

The police department requested a

heavy duty wrecker to lift the ve­ hicle off the storage rack. Car 5 re­ quested CT DEEP to the scene. A CT DEEP representative and heavy duty wrecker arrived ap­ proximately one hour after being requested. During that time, the fire department continued to meter the area with no readings.

The vehicle was lifted and re­ moved off of the storage rack, and it was confirmed that no propane cylinders had been damaged dur­ ing the incident. The operator of the vehicle was evaluated by American Ambulance and released at the scene. The accident is under investigation by the Norwich Po­ lice.

Good Samaritans Alert Residents to House Fire in Meriden MERIDEN, CT - Around 4:00 P.M. on January 21 st, firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire on Broad St. All Meriden units were on scene along with New Britain Engine 2 and Lad­ der 2, Middletown Truck 1, Wallingford Engine 1, Berlin Vol­ unteers and South Meriden Engine 6 while Southington covered the city. It was reported that three men who were at a car wash across the street saw the fire, ran into the house and got everyone out. It was also later reported that several firefighters sustained unknown injuries. Meriden PD, Hunters and Eversource Energy were also on scene.

Second Fire o f the Evening on C hristm as Eve in New B rita in NEW BRITAIN, CT - Firefighters responded to 27 Westerly Street on December 24, 2022, for a report of a porch on fire.

Firefighters had fire showing from the second-floor front porch on arrival. The fire had extended into the interior of the second floor before being knocked down. This was the sec­ ond structure fire within a few hours on Christmas Eve in New Britain. The cause is under investigation.

Vernon Textile M ill Blaze Deemed Largest Fire in Decades VERNON, CT - In the early morning hours of December 12, 2022, the Town of Vernon Fire Department was dispatched by Tolland County Mutual Aid Fire Service, Inc. for a reported struc­ ture fire at 114 Brooklyn St. in the Rockville section of town.

First arriving TVFD personnel found the four-and-a-half story brick and heavy wood timber mill structure at the base of Brooklyn St. well involved in fire. The fire quickly intensified involving the entire structure and threatened ad­ jacent structures and residences.

Eversource CT was immedi­ ately requested as downed service wires were in the roadway and im­ peding operations. The fire quickly went to 4+ alarms and other special calls for additional apparatus, including aerial appara­ tus. CT Dept, of Energy and Envi­ ronmental Protection (DEEP) was requested to the scene as the mill was adjacent to the Hockanum

m si River and flying debris was affect­ ing the waterway and adjacent neighborhoods.

A unified command structure was enacted with support from the Capitol Region and Tolland County command vehicles. The recent snowfall and freezing tem­ peratures created challenges for personnel and incident command requested backfilling of additional companies covering the stations.

A regional Task Force activation was enacted (Task Force 23) in an effort to call in additional re­ sources, including some from Hartford County and beyond to as­ sist with covering the Town of Vernon while personnel battled the intense fire.

The fire was brought under control and an extensive overhaul operation began due to the internal

collapse of the building. The CT State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit (FEIU), Vernon Fire Marshal's Office, and the Ver­ non PD is investigating the origin and cause of the fire. The CT State Police also sent several of their Cadaver K9 teams to search the debris with nothing immediately located.

TVFD standby companies re­ mained on scene overnight to en­ sure safety and security of the area, establish collapse zones, and monitor for hot spots. In total, the main operation lasted just under 24 hours. The TVFD is sincerely appreciative of the cooperative ef­ fort of not only many in-town de­ partments and businesses, but also the many mutual aid departments and agencies that assisted us with one of the largest fires in decades.

Heavy Garage Fire Damages Condo Unit in Newington NEWINGTON, CT - Afire that started in the garage damaged a condo unit at 504 Churchill Drive around 6:45 P.M., on December

19, 2022.

Firefighters had heavy fire showing from the garage ex­ tending into the liv­ ing area above on arrival. The fire was quickly knocked down with some extension into the living area of that unit. The cause is under investigation.

Outdoor Pallet Fire Spreads to Warehouse in Norwalk NORWALK FD

House Fire on Betmarlea Rd. in Norwalk NORWALK, CT - On January 8th, Norwalk Fire responded to a house fire at 11:59 A.M. at 2 Bet­ marlea Road.

The first company on scene re­ ported fire showing through the roof. The fire spread above the garage and into the first floor liv­ ing room and kitchen. There was no one home at the time of the fire.

The house was gutted and posted unfit for occupancy, dis­ placing a family of four. Firefight­ ers extinguished the fire in approximately 30 minutes. Five Norwalk engines, two truck com­ panies, a rescue and a command

aP i % car were on scene with surround­ ing towns covering our stations.

There were some difficulties fighting the fire because of the long distance from the hydrant to the fire. At one point a car had run over our supply line, bursting the line and causing a delay in water supply. No injuries were reported and the fire is still under investiga­ tion.

NORWALK, CT - On December 19, 2022, Norwalk Fire responded to a reported outside fire on 139 Woodward Ave. at 3:34 P.M. On arrival, they were met with heavy fire from multiple pallets of fiber optic connectors and pallets containing alcohol. The bottles of alcohol are used to clean the fiber optic cables. The fire spread to the adjacent building, which was the warehouse.

Smoke from the fire could be seen for miles. There were no injuries reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation. The monetary value of the products is said to be substantial.

Orange F ire fig h te rs Busy During December M aking Holidays Happier fo r Kids ORANGE, CT - December is always a busy month for the Or­ ange Vol. Fire Department, but in addition to handling emergencies, firefighters this month delivered the spirit of the win­ ter holidays to chil­ dren in Orange.

Firefighters do­ nated their own money to two chari­ ties helping chil­ dren. They also escorted Santa Claus to 190 homes in town during the Santa’s Flelper program and made the Flanukkah celebration special for children at a town Jewish day school.

At the department’s annual holiday party, firefighters and friends participated in a 50/50 to raise money for the Yale-New Flaven Flospital Children’s Toy Closet. When the winning ticket was pulled, the prize-winner stood up and said to give his winnings to the kids. The resulting donation was $850.

Firefighters passed the hat dur­ ing a monthly meeting for a special holiday fund by the town’s Social Services Department to help fami­ lies that need some extra support to get through the holidays. Firefight­ ers took up a collection and do­ nated $1,457 of their own money to his charitable endeavor.

As a department, firefighters and the OVFD Auxiliary escorted Santa to the homes of about 630 children throughout the town. The annual event was the biggest holi­ day fundraiser in the 27 years the Auxiliary has been running it.

Auxiliary President Jillian Gagel says Santa is delivering toys to a second generation of Orange residents. It’s not only a good tra­ dition, she says, it’s a valuable op­ portunity for firefighters to let kids know not to be afraid of firefighters in an emergency.

“Meeting firefighters in a happy situation when you want to see them is much different than when they have to respond to an emergency at your home,” said Gagel. “We are very grateful to the community for supporting our Santa’s Flelper toy delivery pro­ gram. Because of everybody’s sup­ port, the program has grown into the overwhelmingly successful event it has become.”

At one home, Jessica Fedor of Orange was chatting with her daughter, Ava, about the nesting dolls she received from Santa, who arrived on Engine-33.

“It’s such a fun, memorable experience for them,” the elder Fedor said as Ava hung on her leg.

A few days later, firefighters were back out with kids, helping to light Flanukkah candles at the Southern Connecticut Flebrew Academy in Orange.

The traditional gift for Flanukkah, referred to as the Festi­

val of Fights, is coins, or “gelt.”

Firefighters raised the ladder on their truck and climbed to the top.

Children watched, excited by the presence of firefighters and the lad­ der truck, as chocolate gelt rained down from the top of the ladder.

The children took their turns, scrambling to catch or pick up the chocolate coins. Then, they watched as the Flanukkah menorah was lit.

For Rabbi Sheya Flecht, the head of the Academy, there is a spir­ itual tie between firefighters and the flames of the Flanukkah candles.

“The firefighters’ job is to put out fires,” he said. “They’re saving lives, giving life back. Our job is to light fires. We light fires in the spir­ itual sense that dispel the darkness.

The light of goodness and kindness can illuminate lives and miles. We all certainly need more of that.”

Fire Chief Vaughan Dumas says the community outreach is not only fun for department members, it’s re­ warding on several levels.

“For more than 95 years, our motto has been Neighbors Flelping Neighbors,” he said. “That usually means responding to emergencies and helping people during what is usually a very bad day for them. But these activities let us interact with kids and the community in a calm environment and enjoy a positive experience with our firefighters.”

This book is soft cover, 6inches by 9-inches, with 276 pages. It was published in 2020. It is a compilation of statements and suggestions given by a vast num­ ber of veteran firefighters from many states, all to help both the rookie and firefighters in general to be the best that they can be. No one can be perfect, but by follow­ ing these tips they will promote the fire service to provide superior performance to the people they were hired to protect. The fire service works as a team, and none of these recommendations seek to violate that. In other words, they are not meant to promote freelanc­ ing such as going off away from the team to do a chore or make a search unless the company officer is aware of it and gives permis­ sion. In addition it is understood that standard operating procedures are put in place after much consid­ eration and these should take precedents over suggestions made in the book. Many firefighters from throughout the country have given input and it should be real­ ized that some tactics may differ in other regions. When this book re­ view is shown in this paper I will have been retired over 19 years and things can change within that time. So I am not going to criticize anything, except to say that I agree wholeheartedly with what is writ­ ten, though some is new to me, some I do not fully understand and for a very few I may disagree with, but that is for you the reader to dis­ cover. The chapters are about the first day in the station, construc­ tion, engine company operations, ladder company operations, under­ standing smoke conditions, using tools, vehicle fires, being the driver/engineer, strategies and tac­ tics, safety and survival, incident command, training and, what you can be taught in general. Enjoy the book! Do not try to read too much at a time, and hopefully live to re­ tire!

Second Working Fire in Two Hours fo r Waterford WATERFORD, CT - At 2:24 RM. on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, the Quaker FTill and Cohanzie Fire Departments were dispatched to 83 Old Colchester Road for a house filling with smoke. W-29 said he had a working basement fire at 2:27 P.M., which initiated the town wide response. An assignment from Montville and the New London FAST were also started. Engine 21 arrived and stretched a one-andthree-quarter inch hose line through the rear basement door.

Engines 11 and 51 stretched a sec­ ond line from Engine 21 and ad­ vanced into the basement. Crews made a push from the rear where they found active fire in the base­ ment. Truck 55 backed into the driveway and set up on the

'Alpha/Delta' corner. Engine 42 provided manpower to help over­ haul and vent the basement. Truck 15’s crew stretched a crosslay from Truck 25 into the first floor where they found a heavy smoke condi­ tion. A crew then hand jacked a five-inch supply line from Engine 21 to Truck 25.

Waterford Ambulance stood by on scene and the Waterford Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.

Vernon Apartment Fire Quickly Knocked Down VERNON, CT - On the morn­ ing of December 19, 2022 just after 8:00 A.M., the Town of Ver­ non Fire Department was dis­ patched by Tolland County Mutual Aid Fire Service, Inc. for the report of a kitchen fire at Countrywood at Vernon Apartments on Talcottville Road.

First arriving units found smoke and fire extending from the townhome style apartment with the building being evacuated. A second-alarm assign­ ment was started with a second ambulance. The fire was brought under control in approximately 25 minutes and limited to the apart­ ment of origin.

Mutual aid from South Wind­ sor, Ellington, Tolland and Man­ chester Fire Departments assisted at the scene, and others covered Vernon stations during the inci­ dent. One Ffrefighter was trans­ ported from the scene to a local hospital for evaluation.

M otorcycle Catches Fire and Spreads to Taftville House TAFTVIFFE, CT - At 9:24 P.M. on Thursday, January 12th, the Taftville Fire Department with Nor­ wich Engine 2, Truck 1 and the Bat­ talion were dispatched to 12 Prentice Street for a reported motorcycle that blew up and caught the back of the house on fire. Car 2 arrived at 9:28 P.M., reporting fire showing from the Delta' side of a sin­ gle-story, wood-frame residential house.

Engine 21 arrived shortly after and stretched a one-and-three-quarter inch hose line to the 'Delta' side, knocking a large amount of fire. En­ gine 2 arrived next and dropped their five-inch at Engine 21 and re­ verse laid to the hydrant on the cor­ ner of Prentice and Elighland Street.

Engine 2 then forced the front door and stretched a line from Engine 21 to the interior. Tower 25 threw a ground ladder and cut a hole in the roof. Engine 22 stretched a third line while Tmck 1 did overhaul.

Car 2 had command while the Battalion had operations. American Ambulance and the Mohegan Tribal FAST stood by on scene. The Nor­ wich Fire Marshal’s Office is inves­ tigating.

We all w ork as a team, if we re­ alize it or not. Part of going through life is know ing that life is a team sport and that nobody' goes through life alone. There are people that try to keep people out of their lives but they' can't.

Parents know that it takes a team to care for their children.

There may' be babysitters, teachers, coaches, relatives, doctors, and that is only off the top of my head.

When I think of someone who wants to be solo, I think of the car­ toon them e song for M ighty M ouse: "Here I come to save the day!"

We all need good support.

Look at the police department, the fire departm ent, EMS or the military' and y'ou see a team. One thing about those teams is that they' train so that the hardest jobs look easier and well orchestrated.

The scene of a fire starts with an unseen m em ber, but everyone know s, and that is the dispatcher.

You have the police, who show up and help with traffic and getting in­ form ation and other things. You have the chief (incident com ­ mander) for the fire departm ent, then the truck company', engine com panies, rescue company', EMS and all the other specialized units, this is a team for success. B ut do not forget that it does not end there.

They' may' rety on the water depart­ m ent and other departm ents that fall into the realm of departm ent of public works. One way the succeed is by' keeping up their training and drill together as often as possible.

Through training, we learn who can do w hat and w here additional re­ sources or training is needed.

I know that when y^ou look at a H azardous M aterials incident,y^ou may- w ork w ith other team m em ­ bers that y'ou would not think about.

M ost firefighters may' not think about having the Coast G uard on their team , but a spill that leads to w ater that can be navigated needs to include them. Other team m em ­ bers may' be people who can move m aterials or cleanup contractors, or the local restaurant for food on long calls.

When we live our life, we have a team. We have relatives, doctors, teachers, faith leaders, bankers, in­ vestm ent counselors, m ental health counselors, our team of places that provide us product, from food to medication. If we have a disease we are realty picky about who is on our team. If we have heart disease, we w ant the best cardiologist on the team and not the foot doctor, when we are going for heart surgery'.

W hen som eone is going

through substance recovery, they' need to be selective about their team.

They' do not have people from their old habits on the team. You would not want a drug dealer on y'our team as y'ou are trying to recover or a liquor store, when y'ou are trying to give up alcohol.

If we look at corporations or large ventures, we w ork as a team.

Shed Fire on F airview Ave. in N orw alk NORWALK, CT - The City of Norwalk FD responded to a shed fire on Monday, December 26, 2022 at 10:52 A.M. The fire was located at 11 Fairview Ave., in a 10’ x 12’ shed. The fire was ex­ tinguished within 15 minutes by a Ist-alarm assignment of three engines, two trucks, and one rescue consisting of 25 personnel. There were no reported injuries to firefighters or civilians.

The Norwalk Fire Marshal's Division is investigating the cause of the fire.

WALTHAM, MA - Several calls were placed to Waltham’s 911 center on January 19th for a car into a tree at 96 Lafayette which sent Waltham Engine 3, Rescue 1 and Medic 1 to the scene. The young female driver was not trapped, but was transported to Newton Wellesley Hospital with minor injuries.

Two People Forced to Jump from Fall River Home to Escape Fire FALL RIVER, MA - Around 3:30 AM . on January 24th, fire­ fighters were toned out for a still alarm for a reported structure fire at 157 Ray Street. Engines 2, 9 and 12, along with Platform 1, Ladder 4, and Heavy Rescue 1 responded.

Two occupants were injured

when they were forced to jump from the second floor in order to escape the flames. Both occupants were then transported by medical rescue to the local hospital. Fire­ fighters made a quick knockdown, but not before the home sustained heavy damage.

Home Renovations Lead to Structure Fire in Springfield SPRINGFIELD, MA - A resi­ dent doing work in their attic ac­ cidentally started a fire that went to two alarms and did an esti­ mated $100,000 in damage to the two-and-a-half story wood-frame duplex in the Forest Park neighborhood of Springfield on December 13, 2022 .

Companies re­ sponded to the ad­ dress of 177-179 Leyfred Terrace shortly before 5:00 PM. to find heavy smoke and fire venting from the roof of the occupied dwelling, and the lone occupant of the home already outside. Crews en­ tered the structure for an interior attack on the fire, but 20 minutes into the incident, with fire still venting from the roof and crews not making good progress inside, Leyfred Command ordered the evacuation of the structure and the sounding of the second-alarm to bolster manpower on scene and improve water supply.

Crews switched to a defen­ sive attack mode and two ladder pipes, as well as several hand lines were deployed to darken down the fire from the exterior prior to reentering the building for salvage and overhaul. Once crews reentered the structure, they made a troublesome discov­ ery according to information re­ leased by department officials.

Firefighters found a propane fired heater in the attic of the building where the resident admitted to in­ vestigators he was doing renova­ tion work that included grinding/soldering prior to the fire. During the fire, the tank began venting propane into the attic and the only thing that pre­ vented a BLEVE from occurring was the master streams from Truck Companies 3 and 1 playing into the attic that inadvertently cooled the propane cylinder.

SFD officials turned to local news media after the fire to re­ mind residents that it is illegal in the Commonwealth of Massachu­ setts to have propane fed heaters inside an occupied residential structure, and to be careful this winter season with any and all forms of heating. The resident was uninjured in the fire and in­ vestigators believe the work they were doing was the cause of the fire.

Three-Car Crash with Rollover on 1-95 in Waltham WALTHAM, MA - On December 22, 2022, Mass State Police reported a rollover crash on 1-95 south in Waltham with con­ flicting locations. Waltham Fire dispatched Engine 2, Rescue 1 and Medic 3. While en route, Deputy Tony Capello re­ quested Engine 4 be dispatched to check out 1-95 north. Fire­ fighters found three cars involved in the accident, with a pickup truck on its side. All individuals were out of the vehi­ cles and did not require medical attention. The pickup truck hit the embankment so hard it sent boulders flywing up a hill and smashed a parked van.

Two Alarms Struck for Brockton House Fire BROCKTON, MA - Around 7:55 RM. on the evening of Thurs­ day, January 5th, the Brockton Fire Department struck Box-1234 for a reported basement fire at 168 Bartlett Street. Squad-A, Engine-5, Engine-4, Engine-2 (RIT), Ladder1, Ladder-2 and Car-56 responded.

Engine-4 arrived on scene and confirmed a basement fire in a twoand-a-half story wood-frame dwelling, and they stretched a line.

All occupants were reported out of the building, and primary searches were negative. Approximately 10 minutes into the incident a Working

Fire assignment was ordered by Car-56. Shortly after the Working Fire was requested, as smoke began to push from the basement and third floor, a Second-Alarm was ordered, bringing Engine-7 to the scene, as­ signed as RIT. Car-55 Chief of De­ partment Brian Nardelli also responded to the Second-Alarm.

Command reported that the heavy fire was knocked down in the basement with three hand lines. Two

sticks and several ground ladders were seen thrown to the building.

Within another 15 minutes, the fire was knocked down and the heavy smoke was ejected from the multi­ ple-family home. Mutual aid com­ panies from West Bridgewater and Stoughton covered the city during the fire. The Red Cross was re­ quested to the scene for displaced residents. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is under in­ vestigation.

BROCKTON, MA - Any time that a child has to spend in the hos­ pital is difficult, but it is especially difficult around the holidays. That is why the Fire & Iron Firefighters Motorcycle Club held a toy drive just prior to the holiday season and was able to deliver a substantial amount of toys to children who would be hospitalized during the holidays.

The South Shore chapter of Fire & Iron MC, Station-144, has had a long partnership with Signature Flealthcare Brockton Flospital do­ nating toys and funds to their pedi­ atric unit. Each May, the club holds a motorcycle run which starts and

ends at the hospital, with all pro­ ceeds going directly to the pediatric unit. Typically, Station-144 makes semi-annual donations of toys to the hospital.

ACTON, MA - Acton fire­ fighters responded to 23 Washing­ ton Drive around 7:45 PM. Monday night, December 19, 2022, following a call by the oc­ cupant indicating a fire inside the home. Boxborough, Concord, Westford and Maynard responded to assist the crews that were already en­ gaged. A second-alarm was trans­ mitted to back-fill the empty Acton stations.

While performing a search of the fire floor, Littleton F-2 re­ ported that his crew located a "still breathing" occupant who they were working to extricate. Once

outside the structure, the unre­ sponsive 40-year-old female who presented with burns to the face and hands was intubated and an IO was placed. Fire Alarm added a Concord Ambulance and Pro ALS to the assignment upon hearing of the rescue in progress. Command requested Boston MedFlight a short time later.

Interior crews held the fire to the second-floor kitchen area with no extension to the attic. The fire investigation team was called to determine the cause and origin.

W hitman Fire’s A dm inistrative A ssistant Retires WHITMAN, MA - On Thurs­ day, December 29, 2022, the long­ time Administrative Assistant for the Whitman Fire Department worked her last day and stepped into the world of retirement.

Lisa Riley dedicated the last 17-years to the Town of Whitman working as the Administrative As­ sistant with the Fire Department.

Riley worked with the last three Fire Chiefs, Timothy Travers, Tim­ othy Grenno and most recently, Timothy Clancy. Riley had worked longer at Whitman Fire than most of the current staff.

PFFM Kicks Off Operation Warm in Lynn LYNN, MA - On the afternoon of Friday, January 13th, the Pro­ fessional Fire Fighters of Massa­ chusetts and the Boston Bruins Foundation started their "Opera­ tion Warm" initiative, providing winter coats, gloves and hats to children in need. Lynn Ladder-2 and Engine-9 arrived at the Curwin Circle Recreation Flail, with the Boston Bruins mascot Blades riding step, full of boxes of winter items. Firefighters, and Blades alike, were happily greeted by children and parents who live in the Curwin Circle neighborhood.

Members of the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts, along with members of Lynn Fire­ fighters Local #739, carried the boxes into the recreation hall where dozens of children gathered to receive their winter items. The coats were designed and manufac­ tured by ThreadTech, a local com­ pany based in the Boston neighborhood of Charlestown, owned by Donielle McKeever.

Operation Warm had been held for several consecutive years, but was paused for the last few years due to the Covid-19 pan­ demic. Members of the PFFM and Boston Bruins foundation com­ mented how happy they were to have Operation Warm back in full swing. The Lynn visit of Opera­ tion Warm was the first of three stops around the Commonwealth.

The following week, firefighters distributed winter items to chil­ dren in Flolyoke, followed the next week with a stop in Brock­ ton.

CHICOPEE, MA - A Christmas Eve structure fire went to two alarms and heavily damaged the third floor of a three-story mixed use occupancy in the Willimansett neighborhood of Chicopee, MA while also sending two residents and one firefighter to the hospital for treatment of injuries.

911 calls began coming into WESTCOMM PSD at noontime on December 24th with callers report­ ing that the third floor was on fire and that a child was trapped inside the building. With this information, CFD’s on duty Deputy Chief or­ dered the second-alarm be struck even before he arrived on scene to

ensure that he had more manpower for the tasks at hand.

First due Engine and Ladder 5 arrived on location to find heavy fire venting from the third floor 'A/D' comer of the building. Com­ panies secured a water supply and went into search, rescue and sup­ pression operations simultaneously.

The 5-year-old resident was located and removed from the structure to an awaiting ambulance and the bulk of the fire was knocked down within 30 minutes. Crews then

began the long and arduous process of checking for extension and over­ hauling the fire apartment which took another two hours to complete.

In addition to the young resi­ dent, another resident was also taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries sustained. One CFD member received non-life-threaten­ ing injuries during the fire fight that also required transport to the hospi­ tal.

The remaining residents were assisted by the Red Cross, and the cause of the fire remains under in­ vestigation.

WHITMAN, MA - Around 2:00 P.M. on the afternoon of Sun­ day, January 1st, the Whitman Fire Department responded to the area of 47 Newland Drive for a report of a water main break. Companies responded and found a break in the roadway and notified the water department to respond. Several hours later, around 7:00 P.M., the work crew accidentally struck a gas line while attempting repairs on the leaking water main.

sponded to the scene and reported an active natural gas leak in the roadway. National Grid gas was contacted to respond. Engine-242 was requested to the scene to se­ cure a water supply, as the neigh­ borhood had the water shut off due to the water main break. A box was struck for manpower, and a Hanson engine covered Whitman's

Headquarters. Engine-243 ran a dry 3" line with a Blitz gun attach­ ment as a precaution.

Within an hour, a National Grid gas road crew was able to gain access to the leaking pipe and secured the natural gas. Work crews remained on-scene for some time to repair both the broken water main and natural gas line.

No injuries were reported and no evacuations were necessary.

WALTHAM, MA - On January 26th, a Waltham firefighter doing a detail at Sanofi 200 West Street reported a 5-gallon spill in one of the labs of Diethyl Benezene. Waltham Engines 2 and 7, along with Rescue 1, Tower 1 and Medic 1 responded. An additional medic unit was also requested. Engine 7 first due reported that there were no injuries, however, due to the na­ ture of the chemical, a Tier 1 hazmat incident was activated.

Firefighters were on scene for about four hours while they cleared the building.

Hot Ashes Cause Garage Fire in Waltham WALTHAM, MA - On the night of December 26, 2022, the owner of 138 Warren Street put a bag of ashes from his wood stove outside by his garage. The ashes ignited, caus­ ing heavy damage to his garage. Waltham Engines 2 and 3, Rescue, Tower 1 and Medic 1 responded. Squad 5 was the RIT. The fire was extinguished by Engine 3, and there were no injuries.

WHITMAN, MA - This past December, Whitman-Hanson Dollars for Scholars held their annual Holiday Tree Lighting in the Town Park. Donors decorate trees around the park to raise money for scholar­ ships awarded to graduating seniors at Whitman-Hanson Regional High School. This year, the tree donated by Whitman Firefighters Local #1769 was awarded 1st Place in the "Most Festive" category.

Garage Fire Presents Unwanted Challenges for Longmeadow FD LONGMEADOW, MA What should have been a by-thebook garage fire on the night of January 7th brought with it sev­ eral unexpected and unwanted challenges for the members of the Longmeadow Fire Department, and ended up requiring mutual aid from both Massachusetts Jump to fiie# 011423100 and Connecticut.

by WESTCOMM PSD to respond for the reported structure fire at 82 Dunn Rd. at 8:30 P.M. The re­ ported address is in one of the few sections of this affluent, suburban bedroom community that can best be described as "on the other side of the tracks" literally. In order to reach this rural portion of town, one has to cross a CSX at-grade railroad crossing. In addition to being on the outskirts of town, this portion of Longmeadow has the added burden of having fire hydrants spaced over 500-yards apart; so a garage fire could well be expected to pose some chal­ lenges in and of itself. Now, let's add in a gas grill propane tank BLEVE just as the first apparatus arrives on scene, and a water main break that rendered the hy­ drants closest to the fire useless.

Anyone would assume that these challenges would result in the total loss of the garage and the attached two-story, wood-frame, single-family dwelling. Eiowever, good line placement, good luck and an excellent mutual aid re­ sponse were on the LFD's side this night. With companies re­ sponding to the scene from East Longmeadow, MA and Enfield, CT in good time, a positive water supply was re-established with a relay pumping operation and the fire damage was contained to the garage, a boat and an SUV, with the home only receiving some smoke, water and some radiant heat damage.

One occupant was treated for smoke inhalation and one fire­ fighter was treated for heat ex­ haustion, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Electrical Issue Causes Garage Fire in Lee LEE, ME - Lee Fire Rescue responded to a reported garage fire on Arab Rd., January 12th. The first firefighter arrived to find flames and heavy smoke visible from the rear of the garage. Units responded quickly and had an excellent knock down on the fire, which stopped its spread to the home. The cause of the fire was determined to be from an electrical issue.

CHUCK LOWE Former Bath Engine 6 was acquired by the Naples Fire Department in 2019. The 1999 HME/Central States pumper now operates as NFD Engine 4.
