WESTFIELD, MA - A fast-moving fire tore through the second and third floors of an occupied three-story, wood-frame, multi-family apartment house just outside downtown Westfield on June 27th, sending four families into the street with just the clothes on their backs. Westfield Fire-EMS responded to 4 Phelps Ave. at 3:00 P.M. for the reported structure fire. First arriving crews found heavy fire venting from the second-floor and extending to the third-floor and attic on their arrival and initiated an ag­ gressive interior attack.

Manchester Apartment Building Fire Displaces Five Residents MANCHESTER, NH - City firefighters responded to a re­ ported building fire on Auburn Street at 3:34 RM. on June 3rd.

Battalion Chief Bob Beaudet arrived a short time later to find a working fire in the large three-story apartment building.

Firefighters entered the building to search for occu­ pants and find the fire, which was lo­ cated on the thirdfloor rear most portion of the build­ ing.

A resident was alerted to working smoke detectors sound­ ing and discovered the fire in the third-floor apartment and closed the door, containing the fire to the one apartment. A Second-Alarm was transmitted after Engine ll's initial hose line suffered a cata­ strophic failure, leaving firefight­ ers with heavy fire as they backed out and then quickly redeployed a second hose line to quickly ex­ tinguish the fire.

Fire damage was contained to the one apartment and the attic space, with water damage throughout the rest of the build­ ing. The Red Cross was assisting the residents and no injuries were reported. Crews had extensive overhaul and the fire was placed under control at 4:11 P.M.

MANCHESTER, NH - On May 28th, while responding to a car­ diac arrest call, Manchester Engine 10 on-sited a rollover ac­ cident and requested an additional engine and the rescue to the scene. Crews removed the trapped occupant and handed them over to AMR medics.

Neighbor Keeps Outside Fire from Spreading into Garage in M anchester MANCHESTER, NH - During the busy afternoon of May 29th, fire companies were clearing a reported water rescue when they were dispatched to a Lake Avenue home for a garage fire. Squad 1 was first on scene and reported an outside fire extended in the rear of the building. A neighbor was keeping the fire from spreading with a garden hose, and first-due En­ gine 8's crew finished the job upon their arrival.

New Jersey: Anthony Cornelius Duivenvoorde, 62 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: April 12, 2023 Death Date: April 12, 2023 Fire Department: Sussex Fire Department Initial Summary: On Wednesday, April 12, 2023, Fire­ fighter Anthony "Tony” Cornelius Duivenvoorde re­ sponded to two emergency calls; the last response was a fire at a diner. After extinguishment, he returned to the station and went home. At approximately 8:30 p.m. that evening, he was found deceased from an apparent heart attack.

West Virginia: Cody J. Mullens, 28 Rank: Service Forester Incident Date: April 13, 2023 Death Date: April 13, 2023 Fire Department: West Virginia Division of Forestry Initial Summary: On Thursday, April 13, 2023, Service Forester Cody J. Mullens was fighting a fire in Fayette County. While at the scene, a tree fell on him, killing him instantly.

Texas: Horace Dan Wright, 71 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: April 14, 2023 Death Date: April 14, 2023 Fire Department: Abbott Volunteer Fire Department Initial Summary: On Friday, April 14, 2023, the Abbott Volunteer Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle crash on Interstate Highway 35. Upon arriving on scene, it was determined to be a stranded vehicle, but the fire department stayed on scene for traffic control until the wrecker arrived. As Abbott firefighters were reposi­ tioning the apparatus, Firefighter Horace Dan Wright, who was assisting with the repositioning, fell and then was struck by the fire apparatus. Firefighters immedi­ ately rendered emergency medical care and called for additional emergency services to assist with the incident.

Firefighter Wright was flown to Hillcrest Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Virginia: Chester Taylor Lauck, 66 Rank: Deputy Chief Incident Date: April 21, 2023 Death Date: April 23,2023 Fire Department: Frederick County Fire and Rescue Department Initial Summary: On Friday, April 21, 2023, multiple fire and rescue stations from Frederick County, VA and Hampshire County, W V responded to a wildland fire in Frederick County. The wildland fire burned several acres o f brush and woods with total incident duration lasting approximately seven hours. Deputy Chief Chester Taylor Lauck was the operator o f the Ultra-Terrain Vehicle (UTV) and performed firefight­ ing operations, to include extinguishment with a hose line and applying a fire line. Approximately two hours after arriving home, Deputy Chief Lauck began to feel ill and 9-1-1 was immediately called. He was then transported to a heart specialty center where he was treated. During this time, he suffered multiple heart attacks and was put on life support. After addi­ tional diagnostic testing, the family decided to stop all life support. Deputy Chief Lauck passed away on Sunday, April 23, 2023.

Tennessee: Roy Sewell, 27 Rank: Captain Incident Date: April 24, 2023 Death Date: April 24, 2023 Fire Department: North Tazewell Volunteer Fire Department Initial Summary: On Monday, April 24, 2023, Captain Roy Sewell was responding to an EMS call and to set up a landing zone. While enroute, the apparatus he was driving left the roadway and rolled down a steep em­ bankment. Captain Sewell was fatally injured and was declared deceased at the scene.

Three Alarms Struck fo r Stubborn Manchester Fire MANCHESTER, NH - During the afternoon hours of May 29th, Manchester Fire Alarm received reports of a fire on the porches of a Brook Street home.

Engine 5 arrived and con­ firmed fire showing from the third-floor, and a working fire w a s transmitted. After a short time, a secondalarm was dis­ patched, as it was discovered that the fire had extended into the attic. A third-alarm was struck about 10 minutes after and companies went defensive.

Firefighters fought the fire for more than an hour before bringing it under control.

The au­ thor is deceased, but I did know him many years ago when he was with Pemfab Trucks in Rancocas, NJ. I write an apparatus deliveries column in another publication and he contributed to it. This manufacturer had been known by other names through its manufac­ turing years. It catered mostly to volunteer fire departments build­ ing mostly on commercial chas­ sis, but also built on custom chassis. They sold Grove aerial ladders which is a steel cantilever bridge style and was one of the

strongest in the industry. They also had a waterway device named the Aqua Jet which was similar to the Telesqurt. They have a colorful history which takes up five pages.

They used an American Marsh pump. A man named Barton was connected to this pump and al­ though the history does not men­ tion it, you will see many of the photos listed as having a Barton American pump. The photos are exceptional, many taken by appa­ ratus photographers whom I know or knew, as not all are alive today.

Other than the cover photo which is in color, the ones in the book are all black and white. A couple of the more interesting ones include a custom rescue on pagel 18 and a Mack pumper on page 119. Page 114 has a Seagrave/American pumper with a story of its own. A pumper with a Mack MS Midlines chassis is on page 112. Some “Plain Jane” pumpers which had front-mounted pumps are on sev­ eral pages. A pumper with “Intra Cab” design is on Page 95. There are also more of these in the book and there are several aerials as well. An apparatus buff will thor­ oughly enjoy this book. It has been out for a while, but I do not believe I ever reviewed it. I will let you, the reader, discover the rest of these unique apparatus.

M anchester Fire Crews Rescue M echanic Trapped Under Car MANCHESTER, NH - On the morning of May 20th, Manchester Fire Alarm dispatched companies to the northwest part of the city for a report of a car that had fallen on a mechanic who was changing a tire. Crews quickly stabilized and lifted the vehicle and freed the individual.

Driver Seriously Injured A fte r C olliding w ith Train in Norwalk NORWALK, CT - On Wednes­ day, June 14th at approximately 11:20 A.M., a New York-bound train on the Metro North Danbury line col­ lided with a pickup truck at the level RR Crossing on Com­ merce St., and pushed several hun­ dred feet, with both vehicles stopping in the Devine Bros, yard.

The driver of the pickup was extricated by Norwalk Fire Depart­ ment and transported in serious condition to Norwalk Flospital.

There were approximately 20 pas­ sengers on the train; none were in­ jured.

MTA Police are investigating the accident.

State Instruction versus Company Training More than once I have heard company officers say “when you come back from that state fire class then we’ll teach you the correct way.” This of course implied that somehow there were flaws in ei­ ther the curriculum or the manner in which it was taught by state fire instructors. However, as with most things in life one must consider different perspectives and angles when considering some­ thing as important as fire service training.

New York like most states has a comprehensive curriculum for each fire training course that clearly has to be modified every so often in response to new and better techniques and even enrollment numbers. For example, the Firefighter One course is not the same as five or six years ago when I took the blended learning bootcamp. In fact, it has split into BEFO and IFO but usually can be taken back-to-back.

Regardless of where the course curriculum is relative to its content the bottom line is that state fire instructors can ONLY teach what is in the curriculum. More specifically, fire instructor level one cannot modify the course content at all although can change the schedule say due to weather conditions. Fire instructor level two can modify but typically go through a more established pro­ cedure to do so. More than anything this is a liability issue. If a state fire instructor teaches a stu­ dent something outside the curriculum and that student gets injured or worse than the instructor and the state could possibly be liable.

The bottom line is the “tricks of the trade” are not in the state’s curriculum and are typically learned on the job and specific to a given department. I recall one instructor for the authorization course I took at the academy saying that as instructors “we are so caught up with teaching the tricks of the trade that we aren’t teaching the trade itself”. In other words, we aren’t teaching the basics and providing a solid foundation but instead are teaching short cuts which ultimately may cause more firefighter injuries.

Consider that in Pennsylvania local level instructors (according to their state fire website) may have to develop their own lesson plans: (https://www.osfc.pa.gov/State%20Fire%20Academy/Local%20Level%20Training%20Program/Pag es/Local-Level%20FAQ.aspx). Translation: Hundreds of local level fire instructors are teaching the same course a hundred different ways and that is assuming that a properly written lesson plan is developed. As an instructor in my view this does not provide a solid foundation for all firefighters in that everyone is learning the same course differently - they are learning tricks but not the trade.

This could make mutual aid with even more difficult and may in fact be incredibly dangerous when officers and firefighters don’t have a common and solid foundation for firematic techniques.

To drive that point home, in 1949 the Mann Gulch fire claimed 13 wildland firefighters. One reason was the crew boss, Wag Dodge in an attempt to save everyone lit a back fire to burn out the fuel around him but none of his crew recognized what he was doing and tried to outrun the fire instead.

Dodge survived along with two others while everyone else perished - and why? Because they did­ n’t know each other’s techniques.

All firefighters, officers and instructors regardless of your level of support or contempt for New York’s firematic classes should want everyone to take away the same basic foundation as opposed to multiple instructors teaching different methods and techniques. The US military regardless of the branch of service has all those newly enlisted taking the same basic training and then spe­ cializing from there. As a company officer it is incumbent and imperative that you view the state’s curriculum in a similar fashion; as a foundation and initial building block as opposed to being right or wrong. From there, it is a company officer’s responsibility to build on that foundation in accordance with their department’s SOPs. In the end, state fire instructors and company training officers are on the same team and need to understand how and for what reason topics are taught the way they are.

MIDDLETOWN, CT - On June 25th, around 4:00 P.M., firefight­ ers responded to a structure fire on Liberty St. in Middletown.

All Middletown units were on scene. Meriden Engine 3, and Cars 9 and 1 were on scene for mutual aid. South Fire District, Durham Volunteers and Westfield Volunteers were requested for city coverage.

A ttic Fire Q uickly Knocked in Norwich NORWICH, CT - At 2:04 RM. on Saturday, June 3rd, the East Great Plain Fire Department with Norwich’s En­ gine 3 and Truck 1, as well as the Mohegan Tribal FAST, were dispatched to 401 West Thames Street Cottage 8 for smoke coming from the roof. Battalion 1 and Engine 3 arrived at 2:09 P.M. with smoke showing from the gable vents and ridge vent.

Engine 3 stretched a one-andthree-quarter inch hose line to the second-floor where they flaked it out. Truck X and Step did a quick primary search and brought an attic ladder to the second-floor.

Engine 3 ascended the folding ladder and extinguished the fire in the attic. Truck 1 set up in the front and performed vertical ven­ tilation. The crew from Ladder 5 pulled ceilings on the secondfloor.

Engine 52 laid in from the hy­ drant which supplied Engine 3.

Squad A stretched a dry back up line. ET-51 and Rescue 5 pro­ vided manpower for support op­ erations with Yantic Engine 33 and Laurel Hill Engine 62. Car 5 had command while Battalion 1 was operations. Command re­ ported the fire knocked down at 2:25 PM. The Norwich Police Department and American Ambu­ lance stood by on scene.

M ultiple People Transported from Crash w ith Fire on Route 2 in Norwich YANTIC, CT - At 7:58 A.M. on June 21st, the Yantic Fire Co. was dispatched to Route 2 eastbound, between Exit 29 and Backus Hospital, for a car ac­ cident with fire. Car 38 arrived at 8:00 A.M. reporting one vehicle on fire with everyone out of the cars.

Engine 33 ar­ rived at 8:08 A.M. with two vehicles fully involved and stretched a oneand-three-quarter-inch hose line. En­ gine 32 arrived next and gave their tank water to Engine 33. Command requested East Great Plain’s ET-51 for water. American Ambulance transported multiple patients.

Detached Garage and Car Fire in New Britain

Porch Fire Damages Home in New Britain NEW BRITAIN, CT - A fire on the rear porches extended into parts of the second and third floors and into the attic of a three-family home at 39 Brooklawn Street on July 5th. The fire went to two alarms and there were no reports of injuries.

The cause is under investigation.

NEW BRITAIN, CT - A detached garage and car were heavily damaged by fire at the rear of 68 Linden Street on the evening of June 28th. Firefighters knocked down the heavy flames before it could cause further damage to the nearby home. The cause is under investigation.

“ D row ning” In cid e n t in Falm outh FALMOUTH, MA - On July 9th around 1:30 P.M., a person at Old Silver Beach in Falmouth reported seeing someone bob­ bing in the water. An initial response was Engine 24, Ambu­ lance 38, the fire boat and a tow boat. Further requests for assistance came from Joint Base Cape Cod Rescue 411, Hyannis, Barnstable County and Hyannis dive teams. A Coast Guard helicopter also assisted. Swimmers were not permit­ ted in the water and the parking lots were closed. Falmouth's fire boat saw something in the water as well as a drone, but divers were unable to find anything. The search was termi­ nated after several hours.

Fire Heavily Damages Multi-Family Dwelling in Westfield WESTFIELD, MA - A fastmoving fire tore through the sec­ ond and third floors of an occupied three-story, woodframe, multi-family apartment house just Jump to fiie # outside downtown D 7D223127 Westfield on June 27th, sending four w § families into the street with just the clothes on their backs.

Westfield Fire-EMS responded to 4 Phelps Ave. at 3:00 P.M. for the reported structure fire. First ar­ riving crews found heavy fire vent­ ing from the second-floor and extending to the third-floor and attic on their arrival and initiated an aggressive interior attack. Mo­ ments after the first companies made entry however, a windowmounted air conditioning unit on the second-floor dropped to the street and severed the first line stretched on the dwelling, requir­ ing members to stretch an addi­ tional line to compensate for the loss of the first.

In addition to this setback.

Tower 1, the department's 95-foot mid-mount ladder tower, was un­ able to gain access to the building due to the fact that Phelps Avenue is a congested, tiny side street that barely permitted the first engine to make the scene. Because of this, vertical ventilation of the fire building was not performed and the fire quickly took possession of the attic space. With the fire now in possession of the third-floor and attic, a second-alarm was struck, and Phelps Ave. command made the difficult decision to switch to a defensive attack and protect the ex­ posure buildings on the Bravo, Charlie and Delta sides of the fireground.

Mutual aid from West Springfield and Barnes Air Guard Base FD's arrived on scene and the West Springfield and Barnes engine companies managed to maneuver their apparatus into tactically ad­ vantageous positions on neighbor­ ing streets where their deck guns could play away into the upper floors of the apartment house and knock down the main body of fire.

Once the fire was under control, crews reentered the building to chase hot spots and overhaul the second-floor and what was left of the third-floor and attic.

All residents evacuated the building prior to the WFD's arrival and were assisted by the Red Cross in finding temporary shelter. The cause of the fire remains under in­ vestigation by the WFD and the State Fire Marshal's Office.

WALTHAM, MA - On June 18th, a report of a building fire at Sarris Auto Repair, 238 Calvary Street, sent Waltham Engine 3, Squad 5, Rescue 1 and Ladder 2 responding. Engine 1 and Medic 1 were dispatched as the RIT. Heavy black smoke was seen in the distance; however, it was not the building that was on fire, but a large truck that was fully involved. Deputy Tony Capello re­ quested a working fire because of the many trucks next to the burning truck. The fire was knocked down in about 20 minutes.

Lightning Strike in Falmouth Causes Structure Fire FALMOUTH, MA - On June 10th, Falmouth had a thunder­ storm with minimum lightning or wind. However, a house at 20 Rolling Acres Lane, was struck by lightning. Falmouth dis­ patched Engines 21,23 and 24, Ladder 26 and Ambulance 36.

Engine 25 arrived and reported a lightning strike on the garage with smoke showing. Engine 25 declared a working fire which brought Engines 22 and 24. Once the roof was vented, firefighters were able to access the fire. The fire was under control in about 30 minutes.

Camper Fire Snarls Mass Pike Traffic in Auburn AUBURN, MA - Around 1:00 RM. on the afternoon of Sunday, June 25th, the Auburn Fire D e­ partment was alerted to a report of a camper on fire on Interstate-90 (Massachusetts Turnpike) on the eastbound side. Auburn Engine-2 and the ambulance arrived and found a well-involved mobile home in the breakdown lane.

The Rescue Goes InService in Brockton BROCKTON, MA - On the morning of Wednesday, June 21st, the Brockton Fire Department put a new company in-service. The Rescue. The Rescue was officially placed into service after a brief cer­ emony and open house for the new company.

The Rescue will be housed at Station-1 on Pleasant Street, along with Car-56 (Deputy Chief), Lad­ der-1, and Squad-A. The Rescue is the tenth company staffed by the City of Champions, the first time

this has been done since 1991. The Rescue will respond to all reported fires, motor vehicle accidents with entrapment, elevator emergencies and hazardous materials incidents in Brockton, and will also respond to regular runs in their first due dis­ trict.

Car Vs. House in Fall River FALL RIVER, MA - On July 18th at 12:30 P.M., Fall River Engine 4, Ladder 2 and Heavy Rescue 1 were dispatched to 35 Oman Street for a report of a car into a house. When firefighters arrived on scene the single uninjured occupant had self-extricated from the vehicle that was still in drive and had sailed over the front porch and into the home. Members began securing the vehicle and searching the house for any occupants and to assess damage to the structure. There were no injuries and command called for the building inspector to determine the structural damage.

M otorcyclist Injured in Falmouth FALMOUTH, MA - On June 28th around 6:45 P.M., Falmouth Engine 25 and Ambulance 37 responded to a car vs. motor­ cycle accident at Sandwich Road and Pinecrest Beach Drive.

Firefighters found a cyclist on the ground after he swerved to avoid hitting a car coming out of a driveway and was thrown over the handle bars. He was transported to Falmouth Hospital with unknown injuries.

Simultaneous Jaws Calls in Abington ABINGTON, MA - Around 1:45 PM. on the afternoon of Satur­ day, July 1st, the Abington Fire De­ partment responded to a reported motor vehicle accident in the area of 1190 Bedford Street. Companies ar­ rived and found an occupant to be trapped in the vehicle. A box for manpower was struck and compa­ nies went to work with the jaws. The victim was extricated and trans­ ported to a local hospital.

*4 3P A short time after the initial call for a motor vehicle accident, another motor vehicle accident was reported with a car into a pole in the area of 480 High Street. Mutual aid Whit­ man Engine-243 and Ambulance249 were requested to that scene, as all of the other Abington companies

were tied up at the initial accident.

Engine-243 arrived to find a single­ vehicle crash with a car into a pole.

The occupant was still in the vehicle, and the jaws were needed for a door pop. The occupant was transported to the South Shore Hospital. Na­ tional Grid responded to the scene to repair the broken pole.

Fall River Firefighters Observe Memorial Sunday FALL RIVER, MA - On Sunday, June 11th, Fall River firefight­ ers gathered at the "memorial for deceased members" for a solemn ceremony to remember their sacrifices. Family, of current and deceased members, gathered to remember their loved ones and to pray for the safety of all firefighters around the globe. A bell was rung for each deceased member and a wreath of flowers was placed on the memorial while the flag was lowered to half-staff. After the brief ceremony, those in attendance retreated to a local restaurant for a nice brunch.

Waltham Deputy Chief Tony Capello Retires CHUCK LOWE

Groton Engine 1, a 2013 Spartan MetroStar/4 Guys, has returned to service after being refurbished

by NEFEA in Connecticut.

WALTHAM, MA - On July 6th, Waltham Deputy Chief Tony Capello retired after 28 years of dedicated service. Tony was appointed firefighter October 15,1995. The send-off was held at the Moody Street fire station. Tony plans to retire to north­ ern California.

Marshfield has taken delivery of a 2023 Emergency One Typhoon 1750/750/30A that was assigned to Engine 3. The 2017 pumper previously designated Engine 3 has been re-assigned to Engine 2.

Watertown's former Ladder 1, a 2005 E-One Cyclone II 95' tower, was acquired by Warwick, Rhode Island. It is currently running front line as WFD Ladder 1. It will become a spare truck for the de­ partment when a new tower gets placed in service later this year.

Trust Fall Chaplain’s Corner Didymus McHugh

I just saw something that made me think. I do not know if they still do it but a number of years ago, corporations would have team building outings. One of the events was called a trust fall. You would stand on a platform and people you were supposed catch you as you fell backward without looking.

I worked with people and crews that I could fall backward and never have to worry. I have other crews that I did not dare because there were too busy with their own atti­ tudes. I still have people from my old crews that I see that I still trust with my life. There are times when I get called out with the crisis teams and I see someone that I have known for over thirty years. They great me with a hug like it was when we rode together. He knows that when I tell him that I have his back and am here for his people, he knows my word is solid.

I have changed over the years I have learned to trust others. I have come to trust my doctors with my life, if not I would have found oth­ ers. When they worked on me and helped save my life, you develop a special bond with the doctor. But as I was rolled into the operating room, I told someone "leave me, take me, I don't care it's not my life" and I still lived. I have learned to trust God. I know that most peo­ ple do not think or have the experi­ ences that I have and that's okay.

After I have had a child bom that was special needs and gone through some garbage that there is no way that I should have survived, I trust more. I have gotten to the point that where ever He wants to take my life, I am okay with it. See when I almost died, I realized that I am not the one who decides when I take my last breathe. I am okay with that.

Right now, I am working on a

project and I told God "Okay, if You want me to do this project. You need to send me confirmation." As soon as I got out of the room, I had people asking me about the project because they are excited about it and want to be a part of it. That is the last time I will ask about that project. Yes, I know, not everyone has that fast of a response. We need to be able to read how God speaks to us. We need to be able to trust in God. Many times we say "In God we Trust" but do you really, or is it that you just pray to God in a last ditch effort to get you out of a situation.

Do you trust God with your finances or are you trying to chase the dollar and forget about the little smiling faces at home.

God does provide for your needs. You may need transportation and want a Mercedes, Lexus or something flashy but God may put you in a car that looks like a rolling scrap yard but is dependable trans­ portation. You may be hungry and want a steak dinner but all you can afford is meatloaf. But the meal is shared with loved ones or real good friends.

You may not think of it or be­ lieve it but God is with you as you go through all trials. I have heard the saying that God does not give you more than you can handle but I have seen the sign that gives the response that God helps you handle what you are given. If you can handle every situation that you are given, there is no room for growth, personally or spiritually.

I know many times being able to trust someone or something may take a long time, but it is worth trust­ ing God. Trust God. Be willing to fall into His hands. He has been holding you so far.

Maybe one day we will talk about how God had you in His hands and took care of you and saved your life, one way or the other.
