Local Firefighter Writes to Support Burn Center at Stony Brook

Extrication Needed at Smithtown MVA Smithtown, NY - The Smithtown Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle accident around 2:30 P.M. on Sunday, August 6th. First arriving units discovered a car that was rearended into the woods, pinning the driver of the vehicle.

Firefighters from Rescue-9 and Engine-4 worked with Suffolk County Emergency Services to extricate the occupant, which took about 45 minutes. All occupants of the vehicle were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighters Burn Center Fund was established over 30 years ago to support burn prevention and burn care throughout Suffolk County. It does so by funding the Burn Center at Stony Brook University Medical Center, the JUMP TO FILE# only designated 090517114 burn care facility for the more than 1.5 million Suffolk County residents and over 10,000 fire/EMS personnel. The 7,200square-foot center coordinates burn services throughout the region and conducts training and research in burn care. At the Burn Center, patients receive quality care provided by a highly specialized burn team, including surgical critical care physicians and nurses, and respiratory, physical, and occupational therapists.

Now, in addition to all the support from firefighters and fire departments all over Suffolk County, the Fund has another sponsor. A firefighter and EMT from the Halesite FD, Stephen Medici has pledged 100% of the royalties from his latest novel directly to the Fund. The book is titled “Wellington Redemption” and focuses on a young man’s desire to start his life over again, a subject the author knows something about.

“When I retired, I felt I needed to do something to support our community. The SCVFBC is a phenomenal organization that does so much good work. So, I hope my book will help raise some much-needed funding and awareness,” says Lt. Medici. His prior novels have supported the Harry Chapin Food Bank, St. Jude Children’s Hospital and The Fresh Air Fund.

Dawn Meyer, the President of the SCVFBCF said, “We’re happy to see our work is being recognized, particularly by the local firefighters and their families. Doctor Sandoval, the Medical Director of the burn center at Stony Brook, does such wonderful work. I’m happy we now have another source of funding for his team and their good work.”

Occupants Escape Overturned Vehicle

Brentwood, NY - Just before 11:00 P.M. on Sunday, September 3rd, the Brentwood Fire Department and Brentwood Legion Ambulance were notified for a reported overturned vehicle with heavy rescue. Upon arrival of Chief Derbyshire, all occupants were self-extricated from the vehicle. The vehicle was quickly secured and the scene was turned over to Suffolk County Police.

Car Versus Pole in Commack Commack, NY - At around 4:40 P.M. on Wednesday, August 16th, the Commack Fire Department and Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corps were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on Scholar Lane and Old Commack Road. Units arrived to find a car into a tree with negative entrapment. Both occupants refused medical attention and units were back in service shortly after.

Two Patients Transported from Southampton MVA Southampton, NY - The Southampton Fire Department was dispatched to an MVA on North Sea Road in front of the Suffolk County National Bank at 9:32 A.M. on August 12th. Units arrived on scene and applied speedy dry due to leaking fluids. Two people were transported to Southampton Hospital with minor injuries. Traffic was diverted by Southampton fire police for approximately 25 minutes.

Vehicle Overturns After Hitting Parked Cars in Mastic Mastic, NY- On Sunday, August 20th at about 10:02 P.M., the Mastic Fire Department was activated for a vehicle accident with reported overturn on Montgomery Ave., near Belden Street.

Chief of De- JUMP TO FILE# partment Rudy 082217102 Sunderman was the first to arrive on scene. He advised that he did have a confirmed overturned auto, however all occupants were out of the vehicle.

Members from Units 5-12-1 and 5-12-10 responded to the scene.

Crews secured the vehicle and placed speedy dry down to clean up the fluids spilled. The driver of the vehicle was treated by the Mastic Ambulance Company. The scene was turned over to Suffolk Police who uprighted the vehicle and investigated the accident.

According to officials, the driver had hit some parked vehicles before coming to a rest, overturned in the middle of the road.

Brentwood Crews Knock Basement Fire Brentwood, NY - The Brentwood Fire Department was dispatched to a reported basement fire around 10:45 A.M. on Tuesday, August 15th. First-due units arrived with smoke showing from a two-story house. A working fire was later transmitted as fire was discovered in the basement. Firefighters from E4 and E5 placed hand-lines into operation while firefighters from L8 conducted searches. The fire was quickly knocked down without incident and there were no reported injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

West Sayville F.D. Flying Dutchmen Earn Third Win of Season On Saturday, June 24th, the West Sayville Fire Department Flying Dutchmen drill team continued their winning ways and emerged as victors of the Selden Invitational Drill held at Brookhaven Town Fireman’s Memorial Park in Ridge.

The Flying Dutchmen compiled 20 points overall by placing in five of the eight contests. In total, 24 teams from throughout Nassau and Suffolk raced against the clock vying for top honors in the 10th running of the competition annually hosted by the Selden Fire Department. Rounding out the topfive were the North Lindenhurst Piston Knockers and Bay Shore Redskins who tied for second with 18 points each, the Central Islip Hoboes took fourth with 13 points, and the Islip Wolves placed who took fifth with 12 points.

The day’s events started out on a positive note when the trio of Ryan Tenney, Daniel Tenney and William Hothan posted a second place run of 6.59 seconds only 1/100th of a second behind the winning time posted by the Bay Shore Redskins. Following on the heels of that performance was a first place run in the Motor Hook

JUMP TO FILE #080917108 and Ladder Class B event. With Frank Miller, Jr. in the driver’s seat, Joseph Quenzer and Daniel Tenney digging, Ryan Huguenin throwing, and Michael Marra climbing, the Dutchmen posted a time of 5.06 seconds giving them five points and the overall lead. In the Motor Hook and Ladder Class C contest, Tenney, Quenzer, Huguenin, and Miller, Jr. were joined by climber William Hothan and completed the race in a first place time of 9.14 seconds.

The Flying Dutchmen’s time of 13.12 seconds in the Motor Hose Class C contest yielded no points, but they responded strongly in the Motor Hose Class B contest.

With Miller, Jr. Piloting the truck, the hose team of Michael Marra, William Hothan, Ryan Tenney, and Joseph Quenzer completed the race in first place, for an additional five points, lifting the days total to nineteen. The Dutch’s time of 7.64 seconds, is the fastest recorded in this contest statewide thus far for the 2017 season.

Although the next two contests

yielded zero points for the Dutchmen, the overall victory had been secured by the end of the Motor Pump contest. The Bucket team of William Hothan, Daniel Tenney, Joseph Quenzer, Ryan Huguenin, Patrick Garrett, Ryan Tenney, Louis Christensen, Casey Johnson, Kristy Hothan, David Banks, Douglas Quenzer, and Gary Schaum completed the race in a time of 24.49 seconds, for fifth place and an additional one point.

This was the third victory for the Flying Dutchmen this season, and the 176th in the team’s history.

Police Detective Injured in Crash on Expressway

Medford, NY - Just before 8:00 P.M. on Tuesday night, September 6th, a detective in an unmarked vehicle crashed into the back of a mini van that stopped suddenly for no apparent reason on the Long Island Expressway. Both the officer and driver were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Medford firefighters secured the expressway, which was closed for several hours.

Three Vehicles Collide in Mastic Beach

Mastic Beach NY- On Thursday, August 24th, the Mastic Beach Fire Department was activated for a vehicle accident with report of fire on Mastic Road, near Pine Street. Assistant Chief Fred Loiacono was the first to arrive at the scene and advised that he had a three-vehicle MVA, but negative vehicle fire. Rescue Truck 4 responded into the scene and firefighters went to work making sure that there were no fluids left on the ground, and secured the vehicles. Mastic Beach EMS responded to the scene with two ambulances and evaluated the injured. At least one person was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Four Hurt in Hauppauge Car Crash

Hauppauge, NY - The Hauppauge Fire Department and Central Islip Hauppauge Volunteer Ambulance responded to an overturned vehicle just after 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, August 22nd, at the intersection of Motor Parkway and Expressway Drive North. First arriving Unit 3-08-40 discovered a two-car accident with one vehicle overturned, negative entrapment, and four people injured. While firefighters secured the vehicle and cleared the roadway, EMS evaluated four people who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and prepared them for transport to a nearby hospital. The East Brentwood Fire Department provided an additional ambulance to the scene. The roadway was closed for the duration of the incident.

Car Takes Header Into Gas Station Northport, NY - The Kings Park Fire Department was dispatched to a reported car into building at the Shell Gas Station on Fort Salonga Road just before 10:00 A.M. on Friday, September 1st. Crews arrived to find a single vehicle into the structure with a fuel spill, an active water leak, and negative entrapment. Two people were evaluated for minor injuries and the scene was turned over to the Smithtown Fire Marshal.

Quick Knock Down at Brentwood House Fire

Brentwood, NY - The Brentwood Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire at 1019 Merriam Road just after 8:20 A.M. on Tuesday, August 29th. First arriving units discovered smoke showing from a one-story ranch with fire in the attic. The alarm was then reactivated for manpower.

Firefighters from E14 put a hand-line into operation to extinguish the remaining fire in the attic while firefighters from L8 opened up the roof and attic. The fire was quickly knocked down without incident and the scene was turned over to the Islp Town Fire Marshals. There were no reported injuries.

Two-Car Accident in Commack Commack, NY - On the afternoon of Thursday, August 3rd, the Commack Fire Department, Commack Ambulance and Dix Hills Fire Department were all dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on Commack Road near Imperial Gate. Upon arrival, a two-car accident was discovered. Firefighters secured both vehicles while EMS crews evaluated the occupants from both vehicles.

One Subject Seriously Injured After Crash With Ambulance Stony Brook, NY - On Tuesday afternoon, September 5th, a red mustang and an ambulance with three people on board collided at the entrance of Stony Brook Hospi- JUMP TO FILE# tal, injuring all 090817120 three people in the Stony Brook volunteer ambulance as it was leaving the hospital at northbound Nicholls Road and South Drive. The driver of the mustang was seriously injured and removed by Setauket firefighters.

All patients were taken to Stony Brook Hospital.
