Ronkonkoma, NY - On Tuesday, January 30th, just after 4:00 P.M., multiple fire departments responded to assist Ronkonkoma firefighters as they were called to a fully engulfed building on the grounds of the Cenacle Sisters Convent in Ronkonkoma. Firefighters battled the flames in 20-degree weather, with snow on the ground hampering movement.

Minor MVA in Mastic Beach

Mastic Beach, NY - On Saturday, January 13th, the Mastic Beach Fire Department was toned out for an MVA with report of a possible car fire on Neighborhood Road, near Commack Road. Mastic Beach FD Chiefs Carlo Grover and Tom Montreuil arrived on the scene and advised that they had negative fire. Rescue-4 was requested to the scene to secure one vehicle that was on Neighborhood Rd. in front of the Paradise Ice Cream Shop. All subjects involved refused medical attention and all FD units were back in service within 20 minutes.

Heavy Rescue Conducted at Two-Car MVA in Mastic Mastic, NY - On the night of January 25th, Mastic FD and Mastic EMS were toned out for an MVA at Sterling Place and Montauk Highway. Mastic FD and Mastic EMS chiefs arrived on the scene to find that they had a two-car crash with multiple people trapped. Within minutes, Mastic FD's heavy rescue and engines arrived on the scene. Mastic EMS command requested Shirley, Mastic Beach and Center Moriches EMS all to the scene. Mastic firefighters used the Jaws of Life to free the people trapped. All people involved in the crash were transported by ground to a local hostipal with unknown injuries.

Building Burns on Convent Grounds in Ronkonkoma Ronkonkoma, NY - On Tuesday, January 30th, just after 4:00 P.M., multiple fire departments responded to assist Ronkonkoma firefighters as they were called to a fully engulfed building on the grounds of the Cenacle Sisters Convent in Ronkonkoma. Firefighters battled the flames in 20-degree weather, with snow on the ground hampering movement. Crews stretched handlines and used deck guns to finally bring the blaze under control after 45 minutes. Fire officials responded to the scene to investigate the fire. No injuries were reported.

Body Found in Burning Car in Hagerman Hagerman, NY - Hagerman firefighters responded to a fully involved car fire on January 14th just after 8:00 P.M. After extinguishing the blaze, firefighters found a body in the car.

Firefighters Battle Stubborn Chimney Fire in Coram

Coram, NY - No injuries were reported after a fire broke out at a home on Felway Drive in Coram on Friday evening, January 12th. Coram Fire Department responded to the home at 9 Felway Drive just after 8:30 P.M. after a 911 call came in reporting a chimney fire. When fire officials arrived they encountered smoke coming from the chimney of the home, which soon escalated to flames shooting from the chimney.

A Brookhaven Town Fire Marshal was sent to the scene and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Two Injured in Mastic Car Crash Mastic, NY - On the evening of Friday, January 26th, Mastic Fire was activated for a report of a motor vehicle accident with entrapment at Wavecrest Drive and Mastic Road. On arrival, Lieutenant Chris Gross advised that he had a twocar MVA, but no one was trapped. Gross advised the crew of Rescue 10 that on arrival they needed to secure two vehicles and put down speedy dry. The crew immediately went to work cleaning up the scene on arrival. Mastic EMS was on scene and transported two patients to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The road was reopened a short time later.

Head-On Crash with Entrapment in Coram Coram, NY - On Saturday afternoon, January 13th, two cars collided head-on, trapping the unconscious driver of one of the cars. Coram firefighters used hydraulic tools to take the rear door off while medics and police officers tended to the patient. The subject was removed within 15 minutes and transported to University Hospital with head trauma. The driver of the second car was also transported by Coram ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.

House Fire in Manorville with Burn Victims Manorville, NY - Manorville FD and Manorville EMS were toned out for a building fire on County Road 111 and Champman Blvd. on January 24th. The Manorville FD chief was alerted that there were mul- JUMP TO FILE# tiple calls coming in 012418105 that the building was fully involved.

The chief arrived on the scene to find that he had a house fully involved. Manorville EMS arrived next to find that they had two burn burn victims and requested two helicopters to the scene.

Manorville command requested to re-tone his department out for a Working Fire and then requested Eastport FD, Center Moriches FD and East Moriches FD to the scene, as well as Mastic FD for the RIT team. Ridge FD was requested to cover Manorville's main firehouse.

Firefighters dropped a five-inch line and went right to work on the fire, which was heavy throughout the house. Manorville FD set up a ladder truck to access the roof area.

It took about two hours to bring the fire under control.

Brookhaven Town Fire Marshals and SCPD Arson and Crime Scene detectives were all on the scene to investgate the cause of the fire.

SCPD Officer Injured in Mount Sinai Car Crash

Mount Sinai, NY - On January 19th, an SCPD officer was making a routine traffic stop on Route 25A and Mount Sinai Road. When he went back to his cruiser to run info on the driver, an SUV struck his fully lit cruiser. The crash caused the SUV to flip over, trapping the passenger inside. After crashing into the SUV, the driver of the vehicle fled the scene. Firefighters were able to remove the passenger and transport her and the injured police officer to a local trauma center for care.

Flower Truck in Hagerman Crashes Head-On into Tree Hagerman, NY - On January 25th, the driver of a flower delivery truck drove off Sunrise Highway and down a small embankment, slamming into a tree head-on. The driver was trapped and had to be extricated with a door pop. Once freed, the driver was rushed to an area hospital by South Country Ambulance for treatment.

Firefighters Battle Blaze in Vacant Mastic Beach House Mastic Beach, NY - Just before 2:30 P.M. on January 12th, Suffolk County Fire Rescue dispatchers received a call for a report of a house fire on Beaver Drive, near Elm Road. Mastic Beach Fire Department was activated to respond and as soon as the first unit was JUMP TO FILE# on the road, County 011318104 advised them that they were taking multiple calls.

On arrival, smoke and flames were reported and immediately a Working Fire transmission was requested by the officer in charge.

Mutual aid was requested from Mastic Fire Department and Brookhaven Fire Department.

The Brookhaven Town Fire Marshal's office was also on scene within minutes of the initial activation.

All went to work quickly to put out the fire. Rescuers from Mastic Beach, Mastic and Shirley EMS were also on scene to assist in rehabbing firefighters. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Car Crashes Through Beer Display at 7-Eleven

Port Jefferson Fire Department operates this 2014 Spartan/Marion Heavy Rescue.

Selden, NY - On Thursday night, February 1st, a young driver got out of his car while it was still running and in gear at the 7-Eleven on Middle Country Road and Marshall Drive in Selden. The driver saw the car start to move forward and leaped back into it, only to hit the gas by accident. The car then ran over a curb and crashed through the front glass of the store, directly into a Budweiser and Bud Light display.

Cases of beer went flying in all directions. The driver exited the car unharmed and not one drop of beer was lost! Selden firefighters responded and checked the structure for any damage. The building received only minor cosmetic damage and the Budweiser was restacked for the big game.

Community Ambulance Company Members Answer the Call, Even Off Duty!

Sayville, NY – On Wednesday, January 24th, Community Ambulance Company Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Gigi Mussi was off duty and driving in her personal vehicle on Sunrise Highway in JUMP TO FILE# Bohemia. After ap- 020818101 proaching an intersection, she noticed a vehicle in the turning lane that was not moving.

Gigi’s intuition, based on her experience in emergency medical services, made her suspect that something was wrong. She quickly pulled over and approached the vehicle to find an unresponsive man slumped over the wheel. Gigi began basic life support interventions and phoned directly to the Community Ambulance Company dispatcher for an ambulance. She controlled the patient’s airway and began care until additional help arrived.

Community Ambulance Company was alerted to the alarm by their dispatcher, at which time an ambulance and multiple advanced life support first responders headed to the scene. Upon arrival, Paramedic Ken Newman deter-

mined that the patient was in unstable condition, suffering from a critical cardiac emergency. He and other members of the crew quickly transferred the patient to the ambulance, where advance care continued, including intravenous medications and treatment to stabilize the patient’s heart rhythm.

The crew transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital, where it was determined the patient was suffering from a blockage of the Left Anterior Descending Coronary Artery (often referred to as “The Widowmaker” due to its high mortality rate). The patient was rushed to the cardiac catheterization lab where he received two stents.

After only four days, the patient was discharged to home, and is expected to make a full recovery with no lasting effects.

Due to the rapid response, and superior skill of the members of Community Ambulance Company, this man has a second chance at life. In addition, had provider Gigi Mussi not stopped to see if something was wrong on the highway, this situation could have had a much different outcome. The motto of Community Ambulance Company is “neighbors helping neighbors,” and Gigi’s actions on

this fateful day perfectly illustrate that. It also demonstrates that no matter the day, no matter the time, on duty or off, Community Ambulance Company answers the call of duty. The crew consisted of EMT Gigi Mussi, Paramedic Ken Newman, EMT-CC James MacDonell, EMT-CC Stephanie Golub, EMT Kimberly McCann, EMT Michael P. Kennedy, Driver Rupert Christensen, and Probationary Member Robert DiNucci.

On Wednesday, February 7th, only two weeks to the day from his emergency, Bill Doon came to Community Ambulance Company headquarters to thank the heroes that responded to his alarm on Sunrise Highway. He brought with him his wife Terri as well as their young grandchild to meet the people that gave Bill his second chance at life. It is a very special and emotional time for all involved when a patient gets to personally meet their lifesavers. As Bill’s wife Terri stated to the members of the crew, they could not imagine what life would be like for their grandson without Grandpa, and they now call Gigi a member of their family.

On Sunday, January 14th, the Mastic Fire Department held their annual Ice Rescue Drill at the Forge River Marina. Despite the temperatures being 19-degrees, about two dozen firefighters still showed up to the marina. Many who showed up were there for their annual refresher on how to rescue a victim who may have fallen through the ice during the winter.

Members suited up in their cold water suits and one would be positioned as a victim while another member would be sent out to rescue the “victim�. All

necessary precautions were taken to ensure that no injuries would occur. The drill was set up to make sure that all in attendance were prepared should the need arise for a cold water or ice rescue to be conducted in the district.

Afterwards, probationary department members who were also in attendance got to try out the cold water rescue suits to see how they worked. A very successful drill was had.

Mastic Beach FD Responds to Car Fire, Prevents Damage to Second Vehicle

Shirley, NY- On Monday, January 29th, Mastic Beach Fire Department was activated for a report of a vehicle fire on Seymour Drive. Chief Carlo Grover was first to arrive and advised that he had an involved auto in the driveway. Unit-8 arrived on scene a short time later, followed by Unit-2.

Crews immediately made a quick attack of the vehicle that was on fire, knocking it down. Another vehicle in the driveway was not damaged. Suffolk County Police had the road closed for about 20 minutes. No injuries were reported.

Flames Engulf Commercial Carpet Store in Centereach Centereach, NY - On Thursday morning, January 18th, Centereach FD was activated around 7:00 A.M. for a reported commercial structure fire. As the first unit hit the road, it was apparent they were going to work.

As units started JUMP TO FILE# 012118103 to arrive, the carpet depot store was fully engulfed. Automatic daytime mutual aids were enroute as the chief in charge called for exterior operations. Multiple ladder trucks dumped huge amounts of water for several hours and closed the roadway for approximately five hours. No injuries were reported, and the store was completely gutted.
