VACANT LUMBER WAREHOUSE IN MASTIC BEACH DESTROYED BY BLAZE

Mastic Beach, NY - Mastic Beach Fire Department was toned out on April 18th for reports of a structure fire at “Smitty’s True Value,” a hardware store located at 211 Mastic Beach Road, that has been vacant for well over 10 years. A chief from Mastic FD arrived on the scene and found that he had a fully-involved lumber warehouse. - See full story on Page 8

Jeep Overturns After Collision in Shirley

Bellmore F.D.'s Harbor House Engine Co. No. 2, organized in 1925, is located in Nassau County, NY.

Shirley, NY – At approximately 5:27 P.M. on April 12th, the Brookhaven Fire Department was activated for a report of an automobile accident at Auborn Ave. and Flower Hill Drive. Chief Giuseppe Loiacono arrived on the scene and advised the crews from Rescue Units 3 and 4 that he had one vehicle overturned at the location, but there was no one trapped. Loiacono requested that Rescue-4 come in to the scene from Flower Hill, and for Rescue-

JUMP TO FILE #041217121 3 to come in on Auborn. On arrival, the crews went to work securing the scene and cleaning up fluids. Loiacono requested that Rescue-3 hook up its winch to the overturned jeep so that they could upright the vehicle. Firefighters were able to successfully get the vehicle back on four wheels and made sure that it was

secure. Shirley Community Ambulance Company transported the injured to an area hospital for treatment. Also on scene providing assistance was Brookhaven FD Engine-9. Fire Police and Suffolk County Police officers ensured that the scene was safe by closing the roads while rescuers were operating. - JOHN WALTHERS

Medford F.D. Handles Car Fire

Medford, NY - SCPD 6th Pct. and Medford F.D. responded at approximately 5:15 A.M. on March 29th to a car fire involving a Ford Mustang. Upon their arrival, firefighters found the vehicle fully engulfed by flames. The incident occurred while the Mustang was heading northbound on Route 112 at the Long Island Expressway North Service Road. Route 112 was closed in both directions for the duration of the incident. The driver of the Mustang was able to escape without injury.

Brookhaven Firefighters Make Fast Knock Down on Vehicle Fire Shirley, NY - Brookhaven F.D. was toned out on April 4th for a vehicle fire at 15 Plymouth Place. Brookhaven's chief arrived on the scene to find a fully involved SUV that was parked very close to a house. The first-due engine on the scene went right to work and made a fast knock down on the fire. The fire was placed under control approximately 15-minutes after the alarm first came in.

Aviation Required for MVA in Hauppauge Hauppauge, NY - At approximately 10:21 A.M. on Sunday morning, April 2nd, the Hauppauge Fire Department and Commack Ambulance were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident. The location of the accident was reported to be at the intersection of New Highway and Veterans Highway. Upon the arrival of Suffolk County Police, it was discovered that two people were heavily pinned inside the vehicle, which had struck a pole. Firefighters arrived shortly after and began extrication, placing multiple tools into operation. Aviation was requested due to serious injuries sustained by the driver. A landing zone was established on Veterans Highway. Both victims were later extricated by firefighters and transported to area hospitals via ambulance and helicopter. The roadway was shut down during the incident for investigation.

The Suffolk County Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services recently put into service a new command and control unit, built on a 2016 Freightliner Chassis. The body and interior, as well as the installation of all communications and IT equipment, was built by MBF Industries. The new unit replaces an older 2005 vehicle.

Firefighters work to extricate a driver after a two-vehicle crash in Ridge on April 11th.

Ridge Crash Requires Driver to be Extricated and Flown Out Ridge, NY – At approximately 4:30 P.M. on April 11th, the Ridge Fire Department and Brookhaven National Lab Fire Department were activated for the report of an MVA with entrapment on William Floyd Parkway, north of Longwood Road. On arrival, the Ridge Chief advised that he had a two-vehicle MVA with the driver of one trapped. Ridge Rescue-4 responded into the scene, as well as

JUMP TO FILE #041117130 Ladder-9. Crews then put the Hurst tools to work to extricate. Ambulances were also requested from the Ridge and BNL Fire Departments to assess the victims. Firefighters were able to extricate the female driver of a Nissan Versa after taking the driver’s side doors and roof off the

vehicle. The driver was then moved to an awaiting ambulance where she would be assessed. Due to the nature of her injuries, a Police Medevac was called in to transport her to Stony Brook University Hospital. All southbound lanes were closed for an extended period of time while emergency personnel operated. - JOHN WALTHERS

Afternoon Pin Job in Brentwood

Brentwood, NY - The Brentwood Fire Department and Brentwood Legion Ambulance responded to a reported heavy rescue on Crooked Hill Road, near Saint Andrews Drive, around 5:00 P.M. on Saturday, April 1st. Personnel arrived to find a two-car collision, with the driver of one of the vehicles still pinned inside. Crews from Rescue 18 used the Jaws-of-Life to extricate the trapped occupant. The driver was freed shortly after and placed into the care of EMS for transport to a nearby hospital. The East Brentwood Fire Department was also notified for an additional ambulance to the scene.

Mastic Beach Starts April Off with Working Fire Mastic Beach, NY – At approximately 4:15 A.M. on April 1st, the Mastic Beach Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a structure fire at 176 Maywood Drive. Assistant Chief Tom Montreuil [5-13-31] was the first to respond to the scene. On arrival, Chief Montreuil found a single-story home fully involved and immediately requested a reac-

JUMP TO FILE #040317103 tivation for a Working Fire and for mutual aid to the scene. Multiple lines were stretched and put into operation to suppress the fire load. Firefighters from Mastic and Brookhaven responded to

the scene to assist their neighboring department. It was determined that the home was vacant at the time of the incident. The cause of the fire was under investigation by the Suffolk PD Arson Unit and no further information was available. - JOHN WALTHERS

Two Hurt After Reckless Driver Crashes into Everything Selden, NY - Two people were injured on Sunday afternoon, April 2nd, after a driver who was traveling at a high rate of speed attempted to pass a car that was making a left turn. The driver hit the car that was making the left turn and then continued onto a lawn, snapping a fire hydrant at its base and sending it 20-feet into the roadway. The driver still continued on, driving through the mailbox of a second home before finally coming to a stop after digging the front end of the vehicle into the ground. The force from the original impact tore the tire from the car that was hit, sending it 20-feet away.

Mastic F.D. Handles Fatal MVA Shirley, NY - Just after 1:00 P.M. on April 6th, the Mastic Fire Department and Ambulance Company were activated for a report of an MVA with entrapment on William Floyd Parkway, south of Dawn Drive. Units arrived to find a large box truck that hit a car. The patients in the car were removed and packaged for transport. The passenger of the car was in traumatic arrest at the time of transport and was pronounced dead a short time later at the hospital. Detectives were investigating the cause of the accident.

Vacant Lumber Warehouse in Mastic Beach Destroyed by Blaze Mastic Beach, NY - Mastic Beach Fire Department was toned out on April 18th for reports of a structure fire at "Smitty's True Value," a hardware store located at 211 Mastic Beach Road, that has been vacant for well over 10 years. A chief from Mastic FD arrived on the scene and found that he had a fully-involved lumber warehouse. Mastic Beach command radioed back to Firecom and requested a re-tone for a Working Fire

After sizing up the fire, Mastic Beach command requested more engines and tankers to the scene. SCPD closed several roads down and Mastic Beach F.D. command requested fire police to help with traf-

fic control. Two tower ladders, multiple hand-lines and a deck gun were used to fight the fire, which took about three hours to bring under control. Heavy equipment was brought in to find any hot spots due to the building collapsing. There were no known injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Commack Firefighters Extinguish Trailer Fire

Commack, NY - Around 6:40 P.M. on Thursday, April 20th, the Commack Fire Department was dispatched to a reported landscaping truck on fire in front of 31 Elder Drive in Commack. Crews quickly arrived to find the trailer of the truck burning, with no exposure issues. Firefighters quickly knocked down the fire without incident and there were no reported injuries. Brookhaven F.D. Handles Overturned Vehicle

Shirley, NY - Brookhaven F.D. was toned out on April 15th for a report of an overturned car on William Floyd Parkway and Coraci Blvd. Upon arrival, Brookhaven F.D. chiefs were met with a car down an embankment and on its roof, but with nobody trapped inside. Rescue-4 came into the scene and checked the car for any leaking fluid. What caused the car to overturn was unknown.

WEST SAYVILLE FD

Structure Fire for West Sayville F.D. Oakdale, NY - At 12:30 A.M. on Monday, April 24th, the West Sayville Fire Department was dispatched for a reported structure fire at 4 Hewlett Lane in Oakdale. Three minutes from the time of activation, Chief of Dept. Todd Gray was on scene and reporting a confirmed well advanced fire through the roof of the two-story, woodframe dwelling . First arriving engines were put to use immediately with hand-lines,

The well advanced fire made a primary search difficult, but was still accomplished to the best of the crews ability. Mutual aid was received by the Bohemia, Sayville, Bayport and East Islip Fire Departments. Sayville Community Ambulance

was on scene for rehab and also to aid the members in the event of any injuries. The incident was declared under control at 2:06 A.M. and the Department was back in service at 3:35 A.M. Further investigation revealed that the residents were out of state at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire is currently still under investigation. -HARRY D'ONOFRIO

One-Car MVA with Rollover Sends Driver to Hospital

Smithtown, NY - Just after 2:30 P.M. on Sunday, April 23rd, the Smithtown Fire Department was alerted for an accident with a vehicle reportedly overturned on W Jericho Turnpike, near Old Willets Path. Emergency crews arrived to find a single-car rollover collision, with the occupant self-extricated. The vehicle was stabilized and the occupant was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.

Mastic Beach, NY – On the afternoon of Easter Sunday, the Mastic Beach Fire Department and Ambulance Company were simultaneously toned out to respond to an MVA involving a motorcycle at the intersection of Neigh- JUMP TO FILE # borhood Road and 041817125 Longfellow Drive. Assistant Chief Tom Montreuil was in charge of the incident. Chief Montreuil assessed the situation along with EMS, who went to work treating the patient. It was determined

that a Medevac was going to be utilized for patient transport. Chief Montreuil advised that he would need a landing zone set up at St. Jude's Church on Overlook Drive. Units were directed to the church parking lot where they set up a landing area. With the assistance of SCPD, units closed the roads leading to the church in order to make sure the area was safe for the Medevac to land. The patient, a 21-year-old male from Lindenhurst, was taken by helicopter to Stony Brook Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Easter Bunny and Friends Visit Mastic Beach F.D. Mastic Beach, NY – On Sunday, April 2nd, the Mastic Beach Fire Department held their annual "Breakfast with the Easter Bunny" fundraising event. The event is hosted with the help of Mastic Beach Fire Department Explorer Post 513. Dozens of residents came out with their children to enjoy a morning breakfast and to meet and take photos with the Easter Bunny and some of his friends.

Brentwood Firefighters Battle Tractor-Trailer Fire

Brentwood, NY - The Brentwood Fire Department responded to a reported truck fire on Express Drive South near Wicks Road on Monday afternoon, April 17th around 2:08 P.M. The first arriving units discovered the cab of a tractor-trailer burning. Firefighters used a one-and-three-quarter inch hose to quickly extinguish the fire. There were no reported injuries. The South Service Road was closed throughout the operation.
